Prior to 2018, India didn’t have any licensing exam for MBBS, and the opportunity went to Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGE) only. But after the NMC ACT in 2019, it became mandatory for both Medical Graduates of India and FMGEs, to pass the National Exit Test (NEXT), to acquire their license. We love iconic luxury brands and don’t get much more luxurious than Italian fashion house Prada, created by Mario and his brother Martino Prada in 1913 as a leather goods shop. Prada has expanded into more than 618 boutiques globally. Prada was taken care of by Luis Prada and her daughter Miuccia Prada. Today, we will know the success story of Miuccia Prada.

Introduction Full name Miuccia Bianchi Prada is an Italian billionaire fashion designer co-CEO of Fashion empire Prada. She has also the owned subsidiary Miu Miu. Currently, her total new net worth is $5B and has been ranked 945th Billionaires in the world as per Forbes. She runs the business with her husband Patrizio Bertelli. In 2017, She holds the title 73rd most influential woman in the world. Her early life and education Miuccia Prada was born on 10th May 1949 in Milan. She was being adopted by one of her aunts. Her biological parents were Luigi Bianchi and Luisa Prada. Miuccia has two siblings, Albert and Marina. She holds an undergraduate degree from Liceo Classico Berchet high school and went to the University of Milan to study political science. Early Careers and Journey Miuccia spent five years training and performing as a mime. She was also a member of the Italian Communist Party (PCI). During the seventies, she was involved in the women’s rights movement in Milan. Her major journey begun in the fashion world when she joined Prada. In 1913, Miuccia’s grandfather opened a shop as a leather goods shop. Mario and Marino were selling animal goods and importing English steamer trunks and handbags. Mario Prada had a different thought about women, who didn’t want to involve women in the bossiness. Ironically, his son harboured was not interested at all in the business, so Mario’s daughter Luisa Prada took the helm of Prada. After running around 20 years, Miuccia Prada joined the company. In the 1990s, Prada was recognized as one of the most influential fashion houses, and the brand got a premium status symbol. In 1992, she founded a high fashion brand named Miu Miu, it was created keeping in mind the younger consumers like celebrates. In the middle of the 1990s, Prada introduced men’s ready-to-wear collections. 1995 as winning award designers of the years, Prada opened a store at the 18,000 ft in Manhattan in 1996, New York. By now, the Prada brand was operating stores in 40 locations globally.

The company truly began to evolve in 1977 when she started making waterproof backpacks out of nylon’s fabric. She met with Patrizio Bertelli, who ran a luxury leather company at the time. However, soon he started working with Miuccia. In 1978, Prada was inherited by Miuccia, same year Prada’s sales were around $450,000 with Bertelli alongside her as business manager. By implementing great creativity, she introduced the first set of backpacks and totes in 1979. They were made out of tough military spec black nylon. However, that was not an instant success because it was hard to sell due to lack of ad. Prada opened a second boutique in the centre of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele back in 1983. In the same year, the expansion begun internationally, she opened stores in Europe and the USA in prominent locations. In 1985, Prada launched the “Classic Prada Handbag” which became very popular overnight.

In 2000, Skincare product in units does were introduced in many countries like the USA, Japan, and Europe. Over the past following years, Prada exhibited her collections in both New York and London fashion weeks. This fashion house has fullyfledged into a conglomerate that includes labels, such as Helmut Lang, Jil Sander, and Azzedine Alaia. edical Diagnostics plays a crucial part in the delivery of quality health care by providing solutions, information and services that contribute to maximizing the effective delivery by providing answers for many clinical ailments. The recent pandemic has very clearly shown how we need to be clinically ready with our diagnostics testing infrastructure both in the Public and Private healthcare system. Like the popular adage goes cometh the hour cometh the man, the winds of change have begun in India’s medical diagnostics ecosystem.

Medical Diagnostics is the most effective, least invasive source of the objective information used in decision-making by a clinician in Infectious disease, cancer testing and non-communicable diseases. There are clear evidence that 60%-70% of critical decisions in diagnosis and treatment involve quantifiable laboratory data. The medical diagnostics industry accounts for only 5% of the total health system cost, but it influences 95% of the remaining costs. Along with treatment regime selection, diagnostic test results help in monitoring of the patient condition during recovery and follow-up. Even in cases of hospitalization, where diagnostics are critical in defining the treatment regime and reducing the turn-around time, the cost of diagnostics is lower than 10% for both urban and rural hospital settings and with volumes this can further be reduced. This may sound cliched but increasingly it is important to focus on prevention overall as a way forward for the health and well-being of our Nation.

This pandemic explosion has, in fact, highlighted the importance of the health facilities systems and hospitals in the first place, and their constant management, as relevant part of the whole governance of this dramatic and complex moment. This has reinforced the need for Continuous improvement in diagnostic test preparedness be it for more rapid results, at the point of care or community screening for optimized prevention and treatment. Molecular diagnostics would increasingly be the future and the pandemic has shown that this is a key relevant area on which management of major clinical decisions would depend. In health care, periods of crisis and adversity are also frequently important catalysts for innovation. Campaigns against past epidemics were responsible for improvements in health system infrastructure and the adoption of better hygiene practices. Similarly, some of the greatest innovations in trauma care have been the product of wartime medicine. The fight against COVID-19 has the potential to accelerate the emergence of a new framework for organizing and managing health systems in our country.

Lab chains, hospitals, Public Health system and Medical Diagnostic corporations should drive the awareness initiatives to ensure the person/ patient understands the need for preventive diagnostics, coupled with coverage and value. The perceived value of this change should be fully understood by the consumer and provider. This behavior modification will be the key to the success of this change.

The emerging evidence from health systems across India is that COVID-19 will provide the impetus for long overdue changes to the way that Medical Diagnostics is approached and delivered in the entire healthcare spectrum. There needs to be a paradigm mindset shift in the way diagnostics is approached as a tool of prevention and better well-being and this will need to sustain prevention as a goal coupled with digital advancements that healthcare consumers have now come to expect to ensure continuous access to health services in a safe and convenient way. In the Healthcare framework Medical Diagnostics should be built to manage a pandemic as well and not build around the pandemic-this will not only ensure a resilient health ecosystem but also will be a more sustainable one during such trying times. This will also ensure a more potent patient centric approach which is fast, proactive and reliable. THE SIX-POINT ACTION PLAN TO LEAD CHANGE AND DELIVER DESIRED OUTCOMES 1. Inclusive and Accessible: Newer Delivery Models that is inclusive will enhance access to Medical Diagnostics the larger population by leveraging on resources, expertise, existing infrastructure like instrumentation and human resources. PPPs mode of delivery across various geographies of the country have proven successful , a fine example for such inclusive model is the success of National TB Elimination programme of India, that has been effectively leveraging multisectoral engagement as part of the TB Harega Desh Jeetega Campaign. 2.

Innovative and Affordable: Being innovative both with technology used in Medical Diagnostics as well as efficient service delivery models, like the inclusive one cited above, will drive scale of volumes. The inclusive ecosystem will drive the market forces towards more affordable pricing. There are several such examples of inclusive model generating the desired level of services at affordable price which have led the government and the private players to work more closely and deliver better results. It is about making diagnostics accessible to all.

Awareness and empowerment: Increased awareness will empower people with information to take the call on preventive health check-up, leading to more Medical Diagnostics, proactive approach to health and wellness. The various stakeholders in the ecosystem like the diagnostic

Value based testing: increasing shift in the approach to disease based rather than a technology-based will ensure value-based testing and how the report is given with interpretive data. Quality of tests will become more important thus driving volumes further with a patient (person) centric approach. Medical Diagnostics Lab chains, Hospital Public Health system and Medical Diagnostic corporations have helped in expanding the test menu for disease profiling, identifying early onset of clinical conditions, genetic testing for targeted treatments like cancer, diabetes, prenatal testing, early and rapid detection of infectious disease. The public health coverage through programmes like Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana is growing. Private Health Insurance has a huge role and opportunity in driving this further. And innovative microfinance schemes leading to healthcare bonds would naturally increase coverage and affordability.

Deploy and Upskill Human resources: The diagnostics industry in India has created approximately 0.4 million direct & indirect jobs each. While increasing accessibility and affordability, the industry has also helped address one more core objective of national development, i.e. job creation and skilling. The Indian medical diagnostics industry employs around 1 to 1.5 million people, with an average of 15 jobs created between direct and indirect. Niche skill development, critical roles and responsibilities assessment, continuous knowledge enhancement, job creation and additions to the workforce will enable the industry to serve communities better.

With India accounting for only 1 to 1.5 % of medical diagnostics industry globally, there is a huge scope to increase coverage and access that would have a positive impact on the overall healthcare delivery system leading to a healthier population. During the COVID-19 pandemic early understanding of the epidemiology, deploying appropriate testing strategy and rapid ramping up of facilities to provide diagnostics and care in a short span of few months has shown that where there is a will there is a way. Now is the time that all right forces are deployed by stakeholders in this framework to work in a concerted way to bring a change towards advancement and play an important role in the health and economic well-being of the country. HERE’S HER TAKE ON THE JOURNEY, THE CRISIS AND BEYOND: Q: COULD YOU PLEASE ELABORATE ON YOUR ENTREPRENEURIAL JOURNEY. HOW DOES YOUR VISION ALIGN WITH THAT OF THE HOSPITAL? A: My dream of becoming a doctor kindled at a very young age. I grew up in a family of doctors who became my inspiration in the later years. Looking at my father and brother don the white coat every single day, I realised what an immeasurable difference they made in the lives of their patients. It is this sentiment of dedicating your life towards a cause as noble as medicine that instilled within me the motivation to push my boundaries and serve society.

Despite stepping into her new role in the midst of the global pandemic, she has become one of the healthcare industry’s primary leaders at the frontline of this fight. As the first woman COO of the 60-year-old hospital with over 4,000 employees, she ensures Ruby Hall Clinic consistently ranks among the very best in India.

As an anaesthetist, I realised that the clinical aspects of performing surgeries are straight forward, requiring skill, dedication and the precision of a stopwatch. But the leadership task is exceedingly complex. Fortunately, having mastered the art of patient care, I took the opportunity to understand the nuances of healthcare management and shattered glass ceilings to eventually lead the hospital. Amid a crisis of such a mammoth scale, it’s only through teamwork that we will succeed and pull through. Q: WHAT WOULD BE EXAMPLES OF AREAS WHERE YOU FELT YOU REALLY NEEDED TO INNOVATE DURING THIS CRISIS? A: We started by segregating the hospital into COVID and non-COVID zones in completely different buildings. Both facilities had independent ICUs and separate staff to ensure the continuum of care was maintained for all our patients — including those coming to us for emergency procedures and even those suffering from long-term malignancies. By partnering with hotels in the vicinity, we were able to create COVID stations where those who tested positive could be monitored by our teams. I also had the responsibility of ensuring staff safety. It was a period of financial uncertainty and perhaps my biggest challenge was service restructuring to keep profits and expenses under control. However, after having weathered that storm, I can say with utmost pride that both the Wanowrie and Sassoon Road hospitals were not shut for even a day. Both hospitals managed to care for all those who walked through their doors every single day. It was during this time period that I also took up the key challenge of the systematic delivery of the COVID-19 vaccination as well as clarifying the myths shrouding it. Now, we’re on the path to creating a COVID free country through focused vaccination drives.

Q: HOW DO YOU CONTINUE TO GROW AND DEVELOP AS A LEADER? A: I strongly believe that healthcare organisations represent a system of processes, people, and other resources that must be led effectively to achieve the desired outcome of high-quality, safe patient care. It is for this very purpose that I have always pushed myself to do more, achieve more and learn more.And I am lucky that the hospital supports these very endeavours of mine. However, self-development is just one side of the coin.Truly effective leaders inculcate a culture of learning while endorsing growth. I consider it my duty to instil a culture of innovation and change and a spirit of teamwork amongst my team and in the hospital at large. Q: THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC HAS IMPACTED ONE AND ALL. AS A COO, HOW DO YOU COPE WITH A CRISIS OF THIS MAGNITUDE? A: At the onset, a healthcare emergency of this kind may be overwhelming. But it isn’t just us in India dealing with the pandemic, the world is shouldering this colossal burden. What’s important as a leader is that you’ve got to adjust — agility, flexibility, a little innovation. But I suppose what’s most important for me is presence of mind, calm communication, seizing the moment and making sure we’ve got all the pieces being attended to and the right, empowered expertise. In a healthcare set-up such as ours, there are thousands of moving pieces that need attention every day. We have a dedicated COVID task force and a steering committee led by our very capable team. From the get-go, in my time as COO, I tried to build a team that encompasses different areas of expertise and talent — be 27
