Mr. Bal Kulkarni after his graduation was selected in a campus interview to work with Tata Consulting Engineers. There he worked on various projects, BMC water Sewage projects tendering & designs, factory buildings for Modi Rubber and Seismic analysis of nuclear structures among others. With Y.S. Sane he was working on Industrial and residential structures on a large scale and visiting sites for checking of designs. Since 1992 he started DELCONS which has grown into a full-scale consultancy with projects Pan India and abroad also. He has worked in at least 10 countries outside India. Apart from academics, Bal was a person of all events which is seen from the activities he participated in – he was captain of the college cricket team and also represented the college in Hockey & Football but his first passion was Baseball. Bal was captain of the Maharashtra Junior and Senior Baseball Teams and has a National Record

of maximum home runs in a tournament to his credit. Extremely well-read, absolutely reflective and abundantly social persona of BAL has earned him a lot of respect and status in his circles at home as well as abroad. In his profession, among his many achievements, Bal was most applauded for the structural design of the world cup stadium in Guyana West Indies. The roof was of a unique unsupported type totally prepared and fabricated in India and shipped to the West Indies. Another noteworthy work was designing Dome Roof for Pune Municipal Corporation GB Hall, an effort recognized and awarded as Special Structure by AESA. To ensure that you leverage your next level leaders to become passionate drivers of change in your organization, consider these best practices: Bring your next level leaders into the fold: While your most senior leaders may develop your strategy and vision, provide your next level leaders with the opportunity and shared experience of fleshing out that strategy…testing it… internalizing it. They’ve got to feel like it’s their strategy, not just the CEO’s. You have to ensure they feel connected to it emotionally so that they can live and breathe it every day. Be explicit about the expected behaviours. Is innovation critical at this point in time? Is cross-functional collaboration paramount for smooth execution? Are agility and timely decisionmaking muscles that need to be rebuilt? Tell them…but it’s not enough to just tell them – your most senior leaders need to be modeling these behaviors because the entire

organization takes cues from their every move. Even one misstep can cause a serious setback. So live into and demonstrate the expected behavior…unceasingly. Wash, rinse, repeat: This is not a one-time job. You need to be in a cadence of bringing this team of next level leaders together to embed, reinforce, and sustain the change you are trying to make. Invite them to “Top 100” (leader) Summits, organize functional team meetings, and make sure they are included in regular communication from the top. These are all important ways to create momentum within the team as well as generate opportunities for monitoring progress, both for successes and improvement areas. What’s more, if you’re able to bring the entire next level leader cohort together regularly, there’s an additional major benefit – they develop a sense of community that supports each other, is committed to each other, and learns from each other. Going down this path is no easy task. It takes an executive team that is deeply committed to training, development, succession planning, and upskilling their next-level leaders, but the payoffs are great. Hypothesis-based problem solving The Consultant’s way A hypothesis based problem-solving approach is looking at the bigger picture and taking a broad view of the situation, making logical assumptions for potential causes based on the available data and quickly ruling out options which don’t relate to those data. Then you end up with a few potential areas to investigate. Acquire more data, test and revise the hypothesis until it leads to the ultimate solution. Non-Hypothesis based Approach In a non-hypothesis-based approach you might try to find the solution everywhere and ask yourself: •Is it because his customers are leaving him? •Did they change their buying habit? •Is there a cheaper product available on the market so customers are not buying his product anymore? Hypothesis-based Approach But in a hypothesis-based approach You know profit is declining and you also know Profit = Revenue – Cost So, either the revenue (sales) has gone down or cost has gone up. Quickly looking at the numbers you find out costs are at the same level for the last 5 years. So the problem lies with the Sales. If Sales has gone down, then it can be because of the change in volume or price. Check the change in price and you find out the price is constant for the last 5 years. So volume has declined in-line with revenue. That means either his company’s market share has decreased or the market size has decreased. So effectively in a short period and minimum analysis you know which specific areas you are going to investigate further to solve business problem.

The Entrepreneurial mindset of Successful Consultants “Our mindsets are the mental lenses we use to view the world. They shape and drive our ability to think, learn, and behave in the most effective ways. As such, they are foundational to our life success, work success, and leadership success. Thus, if we can improve our mindsets, we can improve our life, work, and leadership.” The first is mindset. Consultants that want to be successful – they want more clients, a higher income and more freedom – can only achieve this once they have chosen the mindset of success. The mindset of success occurs when you decide to stop waiting for everything to line up perfectly before taking action. Decisions that you may have put off for one reason or another before, start being made on the spot. The mindset of success is when you understand that being uncomfortable is how you challenge yourself. The most successful consultants I’ve worked with and coached are those that know they must push themselves to step out of their comfort zones because staying where they are and keeping the status quo means they’ll continue to see the same results they always have. The second critical factor in becoming successful is having the right model. Too often I hear consultants say “When I have more clients I’ll invest in my business” or “When I get more money, I’ll take a holiday.”

If you’ve been trying to get more clients or achieve anything in life for a while and haven’t been seeing the results you want – doing more of what you’ve been doing isn’t going to give you better results. In fact, it means you’ll just end up working harder to see the same results you always have seen. The most successful consultants understand that the model they know, the strategies, approaches, and structures they’ve used have gotten them to where they are right now. But they won’t get them to the next level. In order to reach that higher level of success (regardless of what success is for you) requires a different model. The consultant running a $80,000 year consulting practice knows how to do that successfully. But if they want to reach $150k or $200k a year that won’t happen with the model they are currently using. Because if it could, if it was simply applying what they already know, they would have seen those results already. This is why the most successful people in all areas of life, whether athletes, singers, CEOs and consultants all have trainers, coaches and mentors who they learn the next level model from. The fastest way to go from where you are to where you want to get to is to shift your mindset and grab a hold of, study, and apply the right model to get you there.
