INOVA

EWING FORENSIC ASSESSMENT AND CONSULTATION TEAM DEPARTMENT 2022 DONOR IMPACT REPORT

Thank You for Making an Impact in 2022

When it comes to fulfilling Inova’s mission to deliver world- class healthcare – every time, every touch – to each person in every community we have the privilege to serve, the contributions of the 22 team members who comprise the Inova Charles B. and Betty G. Ewing FACT Department are nothing short of miraculous. This small, but mighty team of experts is, for each patient, a bridge to healing and ultimately, thriving, beyond their darkest moments.

The global, national and local data on domestic violence and sexual trafficking are alarming and sobering And, for the Inova Ewing team of forensic specialists, that data represents the individual patients and families that we care for and the community where we live. Our team’s impact reaches far beyond the exam room into the courtroom, classroom or training center, and through a vast network of connections to resources that can support safer living, income security and emotional and psychological healing.

To our generous donors and community champions, we extend our deepest gratitude and are pleased to share with you this 2022 Impact Report.

Warmly,

The program’s impact over the last decade includes:

7,908 patient encounters

Grow from two to 22 team members, including eight certified Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE)

Expanded from a single Emergency Department to four Ewing FACT clinic locations

“I felt extremely supported and you can tell the staff is trained well; I left with some comfort and not worse off, or even equal to how I came in. I appreciated her listening to my concerns and journey empathetically and speaking to me informatively. ”

Patient Encounters 2018-2022

A strength of the Inova Ewing FACT department is our deep expertise in pediatric sexual assault examinations and year over year, since 2020, we are caring for significantly more, younger patients. In 2022, we saw a 17% increase in patient encounters over 2021 totals, with pediatric encounters up 24%. While patients over age 18 decreased from 2021, the number of patients under 18 increased by nearly 30%.

Our increased volumes are, in part, due to greater access to patients following the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. With children out of school most of 2020 and 2021, away from the influence of mandated reporters, e.g. school nurses and counseling personnel, reported cases of child abuse were down nationally and locally.

Of patients across our four locations in Fairfax, Dunn Loring, Alexandria and Leesburg:

9 out 10 are female

7 out of 10 are people who are Black, Indigenous, and people of color

4 out of 10 are under the age of 21

1 out of 4 are under the age of 12

Inova’s ability to deliver essential forensic assessment services to our community depends heavily on government grants, reimbursements and philanthropic support. The opening of two new locations since 2020 in Dunn Loring and Alexandria, has enabled us to serve more patients, closer to home, but also stretches our team’s capacity, as does the growing need for sensitive and expert pediatric care.

In 2022, support for FACT services from government funding was significantly reduced, shifting more of the cost burden of staffing to our generous donors. We are grateful for the sustaining annual support from the Ewing Family Foundation that ensures current staffing levels and helps Inova to deliver world-class patient care across Northern Virginia.

The Courage Closet — Hope can, and will, heal the world

The Courage Closet has partnered with Inova Ewing FACT Department at Loudoun to provide professional development and resiliency programs for frontline care teams. As of December 2022, The Courage Closet contributed $68,000 to the Ewing FACT Department. In addition to supporting team members, their giving touches all aspects of the department’s work – providing patient financial assistance for transportation to home and follow-up appointments and helping to maintain the technology and equipment needed for forensic examinations. We are grateful for this partnership and the care and support of the leaders and donors to The Courage Closet.

“I want others to know they are not alone, there is support and taking that first step is huge. Statistics show most of us know someone who has been through something like this and it is an honor to give back to the community and others who have gone through so much. ”

Caring for Our Inova Ewing FACT Caregivers

In 2022, our longtime partners at ACT for Alexandria, a community foundation in Alexandria, Virginia provided a grant to support Team Member Resilience for the Inova Ewing FACT Department. Among other resiliency initiatives launched in 2022, the FACT team enjoyed a team building excursion and celebration of their hard work at a Washington Nationals baseball game.

Honoring the Life of Betty Ewing

We are proud that Inova’s FACT Department bears the Ewing family name. The strength of this program is the direct result of the vision of Betty and Charles Ewing that everyone in our community who faces abuse, domestic violence and human trafficking has the resources they need to heal and seek justice for themselves and their family.

Through her lifelong commitment to the health and wellbeing of children and her generous gifts of volunteer time and philanthropy, Mrs Ewing was a friend and lifeline for countless individuals and families in our region, and throughout the world We recognize and celebrate Mrs Ewing’s legacy at Inova and look forward to our continuing partnership with the Ewing family

“As a team, Fairfax County Police Department Victim Services

Division, detectives and FACT work to support crime victims and survivors to reduce the incidence and trauma through personcentered emotional support, advocacy and medical services. The team of professionals often provide cross training and technical assistance to one another to ensure best practices are followed so that victims receive the best care possible. ”

A Cornerstone for Protecting Our Community and Seeking Justice for Survivors

Forensic examinations that are timely, sensitive and accurate are vital not only to a survivor’s recovery, but also to keeping our communities healthier and safer. Sexual assault is a problem for the entire community, not just victims and local sexual assault programs

Since its founding, the Inova Ewing FACT Department has been a reliable and visible partner with law enforcement and social service agencies across our region. We recognize that our work doesn’t begin with an assault, but rather begins with education. Each year, our team delivers hundreds of hours of training to thousands of partners. In 2022, we conducted trainings for:
