D e f i n i t i o n s Bridge – a construction which carries a road, pipeline etc across a body of water. Bridges are specified by function, bridge construction, calculation scheme, location of a road, and type of material. Flyover – a land bridge along which a road runs above another road, valley, or another object. Tunnel – an underground passage for a railway, road, walkway, water conduit, cables, pipeline etc. There are traffic or hydrotechnical tunnels. Culvert – a construction made to allow water or animals pass underneath a road or railway clear span whereof is less than 3 metres. Ecoduct – a special overpass created at walkways of wild animals for safe crossing of road. Ecotunnel – a special tunnel created at walkways of wild animals for safe crossing of road. Origin: Road design standards (2005)

1 Introduction

We are here in the world, just passing by. Everyone on its own way. That way leads us to different places, known and unknown, discovered and yet to be discovered, through the forests, valleys, over the mountains and across the rivers. A log thrown to water can take us to the opposite bank, blossom can be saved by a straw. We create a bridge for ourselves to achieve something, we build a tunnel to reach somewhere. This is our way. Stone, timber, iron, or concrete give us a construction, leading the way, giving us the opportunity to reach something that did not exist before. And not only... A bridge brings us together, unites friends, different ways of thinking, connects countries and nations. This is communication.

Estonia has a long tradition in construction of bridges from prefabricated reinforced concrete.

Nowadays it is important to be fast – what would be more inhibiting and inconvenient than closed roads and traffic congestions? And what would make people happier than secure, pleasant and free running through life... E-Betoonelement has vast experience in offering modern bridge solutions. In the year 2000 the Kärkna Bridge, a single-span bridge with prefabricated prestressed concrete beams was completed on the Tartu-Jõgeva road. With its 33 metre span, it is the longest bridge so far since the Day of Restoration of Independence of Estonia. Then bridges in Ida-Viru county – in Narva, between Sirgala quarries, and at Estonian Power Station were established. First ZIP-beams for a prefabricated bridge were produced in 2006 and were used in the structures of Kobratu and Puurmanni Bridges. Bridge solutions from prefabricated reinforced concrete and other ViaPlus™ solutions applied nowadays in Estonia originate from Consolis SAS Company located in Netherlands and France.

3 Advantages of element solutions

-

a simple structural model and construction;

-

standardised products and connection details;

-

construction works are short and do not hinder trafďŹ c a long time;

-

construction works depend little on weather;

-

precision of factory works;

-

aesthetically acceptable and slender construction;

-

construction of a bridge deck requires minimum formwork;

-

simple implementation of water-prooďŹ ng and removal of storm waters.

Quality

Element solution provides a good and quality result as there are always much better conditions in factories than at building sites. It is simple to produce high-quality concrete in factory conditions and guarantee the desired characteristics of materials in controlled foundry conditions. Furthermore, concrete has a great endurance in chemically aggressive environment.

14

Flexible solutions

-

inclination of a bridge construction and bottom slab in both longitudinal and transverse direction;

-

intermediate pier structures for a multi-span bridge are possible;

-

service installations cast into the elements;

-

value-added products – edge slabs, cornices etc.

Many different ways of ďŹ nishing Concrete is a material with multiple solutions. Different relief shapes, colours and processing methods make its surface attractive and original.

E-Betoonelement: bridges from designing to construction works

E-Betoonelement takes responsibility of all element related works.

Full service volume offered by ViaPlus™:

16

-

consulting at the initial stage of planning;

-

proposing solutions and executing technical design;

-

production of elements and transportation to site;

-

installation works;

-

other necessary construction works on site for the integrity of the structure.

Thus E-Betoonelement is responsible for the majority of building-related risks and the completion of the structure. It is important to deliberate over all opportunities and choose the best possible solution.

An E-Betoonelement project manager will be supervising works from design to the ďŹ nal handing over of constructions made from prefabricated reinforced concrete. This provides a fast information exchange, and customers can address the same person with all their questions.

E-Betoonelement belongs to the international group of companies Consolis SAS, which offers concrete element solutions and related services in most of the European countries. Companies belonging to the group have an experience of more than 50 years in designing and building of element bridges and tunnels. E-Betoonelement executes these worldwide crossing and passage solutions in Estonia.
