The unique Preprufe bond prevents any water tracking between the waterprooÞng and the structure.
•
concrete slab 3. A permanent, continuous adhesive bond develops as concrete hardens.
No other system on the market protects a substructure better from the harmful effects of water, vapour and gas than Preprufe.
Mechanical and adhesive forces combine at concrete/membrane interface to provide a unique continuous bond and seal
The Value of Preprufe The problem of water migration – water tracking between the membrane and structure – is well recognised by industry experts. Once a conventional membrane is breached the whole structure is vulnerable, so where a leak becomes visible is often a considerable distance from the actual source. This can make leak remediation haphazard and expensive.
Preprufe keeps water in its place Preprufe is a reliable, practical and effective solution to the risks of water migration on any project, large or small. Only Preprufe’s unique adhesive bond to poured concrete fully localises any leak and keeps water on the outside.

Engineered Durability
•
Backed with resilient HDPE, Preprufe is inherently waterproof, with excellent chemical resistance and low vapour permeability.
•
There is no risk of premature activation caused by wet weather, or performance variability depending on soil type. Crucial properties are retained for the life of the structure.
•
Preprufe is durable enough to withstand trafÞc and weather and still retain premium waterprooÞng performance. Once concrete is poured, mechanical and adhesive forces combine to generate a powerful and permanent bond.
Preprufe removes the variables from waterprooÞng protection
•
Other technologies require activation by water, conÞning pressure or favourable soil conditions, or rely on a basic mechanical interlocking. Preprufe excels in all soils, withstanding both intermittent and permanent hydrostatic pressure, and is unaffected by ground settlement.

PREPRUFE ...THE BEST EXTERNAL
Double Sealing Performance The effectiveness of a waterprooÞng system relies on the performance of both the membrane overall and the overlaps. Preprufe uniquely provides a double level of protection with self-sealing overlaps plus a membrane that seals integrally to the structural concrete.
1. Laps formed using the self-adhesive selvedge provides the Þrst barrier to water inÞltration.
2. The special Preprufe adhesive matrix forms a continuous and intimate seal to the concrete to provide the second level of protection.
Proven Resistance to Water Migration Preprufe has been proven to resist water migration under independent supervision by measuring the resistance to hydrostatic pressure at a simulated break in the membrane.
ASTM D5385 test method was modiÞed using Preprufe membrane with a patch removed. Tubes were placed remote from the opening to simulate water paths through the concrete. No leaks or water migration was detected up to 80m head of water.

Detailing Ancillaries Penetrations through slabs and walls are highly vulnerable to water ingress. At these points, it is essential to achieve an effective seal between the membrane and the penetration. Grace have developed Bituthene LM, a two component trowel applied liquid membrane to seal these penetrations. Bituthene LM has excellent adhesion to most substrates and is elastomeric when cured. This key ancillary product further reduces the risk of water penetration into structures.

BITUTHENE ...
For 40 years Bituthene has led the field in cold applied, self-adhesive waterproofing. Since its invention by Grace in the 1960’s, Bituthene has remained the industry leader by delivering value in three important areas:
Safety Bituthene’s unique adhesive compounds replace the need for hot bitumen or ßame applied membranes. Safety considerations are at the forefront of the minds of both contractors and designers, driven by modern safety regulations and ever increasing insurance premiums required to cover hot trades.
Performance Bituthene is fully bonded, ßexible and durable. It retains its crucial properties for the life of the structure. Bituthene has withstood the test of time and been proven on some of the world’s most important structures.
Productivity Being cold applied, lightweight and ßexible, Bituthene membranes are simple to use requiring no special equipment and minimal surface preparation. Bituthene is now available in grades to suit all climates, damp surface or green concrete to meet the increased demands for site productivity.

SYSTEM...
Advanced no-fuss system for integrally waterproof concrete structures System Introduction
™
Structures waterproofed by the Grace ADPRUFE System are therefore better protected, more simply. The concrete is easier to place, has fewer cracks and fully protected joints.
The Grace ADPRUFE™ System comprises a range of innovative products and services that combine superior integral waterprooÞng with maximum scheduling ßexibility and control over construction programmes.
Programme ßexible
Combining its expertise in structural waterprooÞng and concrete chemistry, Grace Construction Products has developed a system designed to meet the needs of today’s speciÞers and contractors challenged with building
Because of the simplicity, the Grace ADPRUFE System has no onerous supervision conditions or restrictions on pouring schedules, or hidden penalty charges so you keep control of your programme and budget.
ncreasingly complex structures on fast track programmes.
For further peace of mind, the system is backed and guaranteed by Grace, a worldwide industry leader in construction products.
Concrete sealed The Grace ADPRUFE System addresses the problems of conventional integrally waterproofed structures: concrete workability, shrinkage cracks and concrete joints. In addition to providing concrete with ultra-low absorption, Adprufe System concrete has high workability and delivers a signiÞcant reduction in drying shrinkage. The concrete is therefore easier to compact and has fewer and smaller

ADPRUFE™ Concrete Central to the ADPRUFE System is good quality concrete supplied with Grace ADPRUFE™ and ADVA® admixtures. This combination of admixtures provides enhanced concrete performance with:
• • • • • •
Ultra-low concrete absorption Fewer, narrower cracks from reduced drying shrinkage promotes autogenous healing A low water/cement ratio, which reduces capillary paths in the cured concrete Excellent workability for ease of placement Enhanced compressive and tensile strengths at all ages Improved resistance to early cracking ADPRUFE™ 100 WaterprooÞng Admixture
ADVA® Superplasticiser
Quality concrete, when fully compacted and cured, is effectively water resistant. Water penetrates concrete via defects. By uniquely combining water repellent and shrinkage reduction technologies Adprufe 100 provides a pore blocking system together with a proven and award winning chemistry that reduces the surface tension of the menisci in the millions of pores in the hardened concrete, thus signiÞcantly reducing the shrinkage strain.
All of the properties of concrete are impacted by the free water/ cement ratio. The inclusion of ADVA, a new generation comb polymer superplasticiser, optimises the paste volume, whilst the plastic properties of the concrete are fully maintained. This optimisation of the water and cement contents further reduces drying shrinkage.
Lower shrinkage results in reduced incidence of cracking in restrained concrete, improving the water resistance of the structure.
Workability at the point of placing is critical for full compaction at joints and in the cover zone. With the low w/c ratio and ADVA the engineering properties of the concrete are enhanced.

ADPRUFE™ Active Joints Under the Servicised® name Grace has been protecting joints in concrete since the 1960s. By their nature, concrete joints are the most vulnerable part of an integrally waterproofed structure. BeneÞting from knowledge gained from a worldwide track record of keeping water in or out of structures, the ADPRUFE System features the latest in active waterstop technology backed by expert problem solving and a computer aided design service. Unusually for integrally waterproof structures, Grace ADPRUFE also includes solutions for movement and expansion joints. With the Grace ADPRUFE System you can be assured of an engineered performance for concrete and joints. AT System™ for expansion and other critical joints
ADCOR® System for Construction Joints & Penetrations
Combining hydrophilic and conventional PVC waterstop technologies, GRACE AT System waterstops include coextruded swellable elements to provide active additional protection to vulnerable joints.
Grace ADCOR® 500S is a conformable, swellable polymer/butyl rubber waterstop strip that is easy to install and is suitable for most jointing applications. When fully encapsulated by poured concrete, the expansive forces form a seal against concrete faces. The active seal resists hydrostatic pressures exceeding 60m.
Co-extrusion ensures that the elements, unlike hydrophilic inserts, cannot be displaced or omitted. The sections are installed and jointed as conventional PVC waterstops and can be linked to ADCOR in construction joints for a continuous network.
Due to its unique composition, ADCOR 500S retains its cohesive strength as it expands. The swell is reproducible even after repeated wet-dry cycling.
Junction pieces and customised fabrications are available to suit all requirements.

GRACE RECOMMENDATIONS Background
Salt-Laden Moisture
The arid desert conditions in the Middle East, combined with high temperatures and humidity encountered in coastal regions require special precautionary measures to be taken in placing good durable concrete. The excessive heat and drying winds cause plastic shrinkage cracking unless mixes are carefully designed and proper curing techniques are adopted. The high concentrations of salts present in water, ground, atmosphere and aggregates cause chemical reactions to take place in the concrete, which rapidly lead to its decomposition. The extremes of temperature and humidity accelerate the chemical attack and physical deterioration.
Salt weathering occurs when humid air cools and saltladen moisture condenses on the concrete and into the cracks and pores where the solution crystallises. The extreme temperature cycles and drying winds create volumetric changes in the crystals and consequent expansive forces cause cracking and spalling with rapid deterioration. Any additional moisture, from a heavy dew, etc. re-dissolves the salt, and the subsequent re-crystallisation will maintain this expansion/contraction cycle.
Soluble Salt Attack
Grace waterprooÞng recommendations are based on the design concept that reinforced concrete structures at or below ground level in the Middle East require special design considerations to overcome local geological difÞculties. External attack can be prevented by protecting the whole of the below ground works with a continuous layer of Grace membranes which are impervious and vapour resistant.
Design Concept
In the coastal ßats and many desert areas, the ground water table is very near to the surface and salts may exist either in solution in the groundwater, or in the form of salt crusts on the surface. The salts, which consist mainly of sulphates, chlorides or carbonates of calcium, magnesium and sodium, attack the concrete externally both below and up to a metre above ground level. The calcium aluminium hydrate in hardened concrete reacts with sulphate salts to produce calcium sulpho-aluminate crystals within the framework of the hydrated paste. As these crystals have a volume 227% greater than the original calcium aluminium hydrate crystals, the concrete cracks and deteriorates. A similar reaction occurs between magnesium sulphate and the calcium hydroxide of the cement paste: this yields crystals of gypsum with an increased volume of 124%.
