De enero a septiembre de este año, 2 millones 034 mil paseantes se han decidido por este destino turístico por lo que si no se presenta ninguna eventualidad se alcanzará e incluso se rebasará la cifra proyectada de 2.6 millones de visitantes, pues dentro de esta numeralia aún resta contabilizar el último trimestre del año, el cual sumará, por lo menos, un promedio de 200 mil paseantes por mes.

En 2004, considerando el acumulado hasta el tercer trimestre, la Riviera Maya tenía 22,642 cuartos, lo que representó una disposición de 6.1 millones de cuartos-noche, de los cuales se ocuparon 5.3 millones, es decir el 87.66 por ciento.

n nuestro planeta hay pocos destinos turísticos con maravillas naturales únicas en el mundo, la Riviera Maya es uno de ellos. En este hermoso rincón del Caribe Mexicano se ha descubierto recientemente una inmensa red de antiguos y misteriosos ríos subterráneos con récords mundiales de profundidad, longitud y tamaño; los cuales han sido de asombro para toda la comunidad geológica y científica del mundo, siendo tema principal en publicaciones como National Geographic, películas y documentales del sistema IMAX, propuesto en la lista de las siete maravillas del mundo.

n our planet, there are few tourist destinations that contain unique natural marvels such as those found along Mexico’s Riviera Maya. In this beautiful corner of the Mexican Caribbean, an immense network of ancient and mysterious underground rivers has only recently been discovered. The scientific community has been astonished at the world records of depth, length and size of these flooded cave systems. Recognized publications such as National Geographic Magazine, along with movies and documentaries have proposed that this phenomenon be added to the list of the Seven Wonders of the World.

Siendo la Riviera Maya una planicie sin ríos, las precipitaciones pluviales se filtraron a ríos subterráneos gracias al suelo de roca caliza que caracteriza a la región. Las entradas a estos sistemas inundados o ríos subterráneos, son llamadas cenotes, derivado de la palabra maya “dzonot”, que significa “pozo sagrado”.

Being an area without superficial rivers, the Riviera Maya’s rain filters into the underground rivers, thanks to the porous limestone that forms the bedrock of this region. The entrances to the underground rivers, are named Cenotes, which is derived from the Mayan word “dzonot”, which means “sacred well”.

Los ríos subterráneos, son cuevas de solución con corrientes de agua continua, que se forman en la roca caliza y fluyen a través de las capas de la corteza terrestre; siempre por debajo de nosotros. La placa rocosa de la Riviera Maya tiene incontables cavidades inundadas, producto de la constante filtración de agua hacia el subsuelo. Durante mucho tiempo se pensó que los cenotes eran independientes unos de otros y que el agua de los mantos subterráneos fluía entre las rocas porosas y las are-

nas, por capilaridad o a través de ranuras, grietas y otros resquicios; sin embargo, en los últimos tiempos, mediante audaces incursiones de buceo, se logró comprobar que los cenotes forman parte de un extraordinario sistema hidrológico subterráneo, con auténticos ríos de variado caudal que corren, aproximadamente veinte metros bajo tierra a lo largo de galerías, túneles, pozos y cavidades. Las corrientes subterráneas se mueven desde la zona central de la península hacia la periferia y desembocan en marismas y pantanos aledaños a la costa e incluso más allá de ésta. Marinos y pescadores de la zona han localizado caudalosos manantiales que lanzan borbollones y les permiten abastecerse de agua dulce en pleno mar. En el área de la zona arqueológica de Tulum, el punto mas al sur de la Riviera Maya han podido recorrerse quince kilómetros y medio de los túneles del espectacular sistema de cenotes Naranjal; otro sistema de la misma zona, el Nohoch Nah Chich, fue inspeccionado en una longitud de casi catorce kilómetros y en varios ríos subterráneos del área, que apenas comienzan a ser explorados en donde se han cubierto distancias de cuatro kilómetros y medio, todo ello bajo tierra. Los exploradores han identificado dos niveles en estos sistemas, los cuales se extienden desde la superficie hasta una profundidad de 30 metros aproximadamente.

The bedrock of the Riviera Maya has numerous flooded caves that formed as a result of the constant filtration of water through the limestone. For many years the theory was that the cenotes were independent from each other and that the groundwater flowed only through the rock itself. However, in the last 20 years, through cave diving expeditions, it has been proven that the cenotes are entrances to an intricate system of interconnected underground rivers. These systems average about 15 meters of depth and go down as far as 119 meters. Groundwater flows the jungle interior through the caves and empties along the coastline at such sites as Xel Ha, Xpu Ha and Yalku lagoons. Seven of the ten longest underwater cave systems in the world are located in this area. The longest one is the Ox Bel Ha system, which is 144 kilometers in length, and is regarded as the largest cave (wet or dry) in the Mexican Republic and is the ninth largest cave (wet or dry) in the World. Next, is the Sac Actun system which is over 80 kilometers in length. In third place is the Nohoch Nah Chich system with over 60 kilometers in length, and in fourth place is the Dos Ojos system which is 50 kilometers in length with a maximum depth of 119 kilometers, which makes it the deepest cave in the area. South of the archeological site of Tulum, the southern most point of the Riviera Maya, divers have explored over 20 kilometers in the underground river known as Naranjal. Siete de los diez sistemas subacuáticos más largos del mundo están en esta zona. El más largo de todos ellos es el Sistema Ox Bel Ha, cuya extensión alcanza los 144 kilómetros, es también considerado como la cueva más larga (inundada o sin agua) en la República Mexicana y la novena cueva más larga (inundada o sin agua) del planeta, en segundo lugar tenemos a Sac Actun con mas de 80km, en tercer lugar esta Nohoch Nah Chic con más de 60km y en cuarto lugar tenemos el Sistema Dos Ojos con mas de 50km y con una profundidad máxima de 119 metros de largo convirtiéndola en la cueva más profunda en la zona.

The mission of CINDAQ is to protect the freshwater resources of Quintana Roo, Mexico, through exploration, scientific study and education. Financed, in part, by the The Nature Conservancy, Meacham is currently coordinating the exploration of a cave system that is located within the

Meacham and his dive team will return to the clear waters of the Caapechen Lagoon to continue exploration this December. Although it may seem hard to believe, there are areas of the planet that have not yet been explored by humans - places where our hands cannot reach and our eyes cannot look. The cave systems of the Riviera Maya are one of these places. MAYA TOOLCHE WISDOM The flooded caverns that exist in almost the entire territory of the Yucatán Peninsula were essential as a water source for the Maya, who built their temples near them and even gave the name “dzonot” to numerous towns and villages. Across the Peninsula, it is common to find places with names like Xcalakdoznot, Chikindzonot, Dzonot Ake, Cenotillo, Yokdzonot or Dzonot Carretero. Aware of the importance that the cenotes had for everyday life, the ancient Maya practiced ceremonies in recogni-

tion of gods like Chaac, the God of water and rain. One of the ceremonies still practiced by the modern Maya is the Toolche, which consists of always leaving a five or six meter wide tree line around a cenotes when clearing their land for agricultural use.

Using other scientific disciplines, Archeologist Carmen Rojas and Biologist Arturo Gonzales are leading the efforts of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) to study the archeological remains which are within the cenotes and caves.

SABIDURIA MAYA TOOLCHÉ Las cavernas inundadas que se hallan en casi todo el territorio de la península de Yucatán, fueron esenciales como fuente de agua para los mayas, quienes se establecieron en torno a aquellas e incluso aplicaron su nombre, “dzonot” a numerosos poblados. A lo largo de la geografía peninsular es común encontrarse con lugares como Xcalakdzonot, Chikindzonot, Dzonot Aké, Cenotillo, Yokdzonot o Dzonot Carretero, en cuyos alrededores se localiza alguno de estos pozos. Conscientes de la importancia que las cavernas (hoy llamadas cenotes) tenían para su vida diaria, los mayas realizaban en ellas diversas ceremonias en honor a dioses como Chaac, deidad del agua y de la lluvia, y las protegían mediante prácticas conservacionistas que han perdurado hasta nuestros días. Una de ellas es la del toolché, que consiste en dejar siempre alrededor de los cenotes una franja arbolada de cinco o seis metros de ancho cuando se realizan desmontes con fines agrícolas. Por otro lado la arqueóloga Carmen Rojas y el biólogo Arturo González están liderando los esfuerzos del Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH) para estudiar los restos arqueológicos encontrados debajo del agua en cenotes y cuevas.

En este momento financiado por la fundación norteamericana Nature Conservancy, Samuel Meachen avanza en la exploración de uno de los ríos nunca antes visitado por el hombre, el cual inicia en la laguna Caapechen en Sian ka’an. Con un equipo de seis buzos, ha logrado tender una línea de seis kilómetros y recoger algunas muestras de la calidad del agua de este sistema. Sam Meacham y el equipo de buzos realizan inmersiones en las oscuras aguas de la laguna Caapechen, para conocer la extensión, así como la trayectoria y las corrientes marinas de las que se alimenta este río. Aunque parezca difícil de creerse, hay territorios que aún no han sido explorados por el hombre, lugares donde su mano aún no alcanza y sus ojos aún no miran. Los ríos subterráneos de la laguna Caapechen son uno de estos territorios.

What they have found is absolutely astounding. In the past three years, three human skeletons have been found in the area of Tulum that INAH has positively dated to be more than 10,000 years old. To put this into perspective, until three years ago, there only existed ten skeletons in the entire Western Hemisphere that were that old. Natural treasures of such importance to the world are few and we invite you to help preserve and protect them preservation by supporting the ongoing efforts of the cave diving and scientific community. EL CAMBIANTE ASPECTO DEL GOLF CHANGING GOLF’S ASPECT El Camaleón ha sido creado para cambiar el mundo del golf en México. Diseñado por el legendario Greg Norman, este campo de 7000 yardas es único, no solo en el país, sino en el universo entero de el golf. Como su nombre lo sugiere, El Camaleón cambia constantemente. Este campo de golf va rodeado tres escenarios distintos: la selva tropical, los manglares y los asombrosos trechos costeros entrelazándose con canales rodeados de sólida piedra ca-liza. Greg Norman ha incorporado incluso un cenote (una caverna con ríos subterráneos) en le centro del hoyo de partida.

El Camaleón has been created to change the World of Golf in Mexico. Designed by the legendary Greg Norman, the 7000 yards golf course is unique not only in the country, but in the complete golf universe. El Camaleón gets its name from its diverse layout and ever-changing landscape, which bends through tropical jungles, dense mangroves and oceanfront stretches of sand with holes bordered by massive limestone canals. On the opening fairway, Greg Norman even incorporated a cenote an underground river.

Aunque cada hoyo posee su propia magia, son los pares 3 los que disfrutan ya de las mejores críticas. Los hoyos 7 y 15 rodean el mar de el Caribe mientras la arena y el rocío se dispersan en la brisa. A lo lejos se encuentra uno de los arrecifes más grandes del mundo y la isla de Cozumel. El décimo hoyo es corte pero impresionante, y el green en forma de ocho es impactante: un tiro muy largo o demasiado hacia la derecha enviará la pelota a las profundas aguas cristalinas del canal. Este campo de golf es extraordinario, los servicios en los alrededores son igualmente impresionantes. Las instalaciones de la casa club, con techo de cobre, se elevan sobre el green 18. Even though each hole posses its own magic, the par-3s are the ones making more noise with the best critics. Holes 7 and 15 are surrounded by the Caribbean ocean. In the distance is one of the world’s biggest coral reefs and Island of Cozumel. The tenth hole is short, but impressive, and the figure eight green is outrageous: A shot too long or to the right drops deep into the crystal waters of the canal. This is an extraordinary golf course and so is the service on its surroundings. The clubhouse, with its copper roof, rises from green 18. On the top floor, there is a fabulous Argentinean grill restaurant with an amazing view to the golf course. The practice facilities are among the best in Mexico, including a two-way 350-yard course, for starting shots, and a land of 18000m2 with practice greens. There are golf professionals to give advice to the customers as well. The resort’s one-of-a-kind canal system is even more impressive: where golfers will be able to step from their rooms to a thatch-roofed boat, which will whisk them to the first tee.
