The Riviera Maya Tourism Board has great events planned throughout 2006 that are sure to leave their mark and focus the world´s attention to this magical destination that everyday has more surprises to offer its visitors and locals alike. Puerto Aventuras will shine brightly since the Hotel Aventura Spa Palace, located 50 minutes from the Cancún Airport, is the oficial venue for the México Luxury Travel Expo; event organized by Questex Media Group, in association with the Riviera Maya Tourism Board and the Mexico Tourism Board. The expo and the educational program will take place from June 22nd to 24th, 2006.

Mexico Luxury Travel Expo will provide an educational program for travel agents specialized on the premium segment of the travel market, as well as an exposition area for luxury tourism vendors including hotels, resorts, spas, golf, haciendas, destinations and transportation companies. Over 300 travel agents specializing in luxury vacations are expected to attend this event with the specific intent of broade-ning the options they have available to offer their clients with higher disposable incomes. One of the marvelous aspects of this custom is that it retains the simplicity, joy, intelligence and colorfulness of Mexico. The traditional Mexican toys are inherited from different indigenous groups and each has maintained a characteristic flair, even though they suffered changes during the Spanish conquest. n México, el 30 de Abril es día del niño, por lo que nos anticipamos a esta fiesta dedicando nuestra edición de Marzo a una de las tradiciones más bonitas y originales de este país: el juguete mexicano. México es uno de los pocos países en el mundo que cuenta con una profunda tradición en la invención y fabricación de sus propios juguetes desde hace más de tres siglos.

hildren’s Day is celebrated in Mexico on April 30th, and on anticipation of the date we dedicate March’s issue to one of the prettiest and most original traditions in this country: the Mexican toy. Mexico is one of the few countries in the world that has a deeply rooted tradition in the invention and fabrication of original toys for more over three centuries.

HISTORIA DE LOS JUGUETES MEXICANOS El juego más antiguo conocido en nuestro país es el de pelota, como lo revelan los descubrimientos arqueológicos de figuritas de barro con una pelota en la mano. Estas piezas datan del llamado preclásico medio (1300800 a. C.) Más tarde, con la llegada de los españoles, los juguetes de esta parte del océano comenzaron a nutrirse con los rasgos europeos que trajeron los conquistadores, los cuales principalmente estaban asociados con las celebraciones y festividades tradicionales, así como con las formas de vida.

HISTORY OF MEXICAN TOYS The most ancient game in México is the ballgame, as revealed by the archeological discoveries of adobe figurines holding a ball in one hand. These pieces are from the Middle Pre-Classical period in history (1300-800 AC). Later on, with the arrival of the Spaniards, the toys from this side of the ocean started blending with European traits that the conquistadors brought with them, and which were mostly associated with traditional celebrations and festivities, as well as with a form of life.

En la Nueva España, existió una amplia difusión y fabricación de juguetes mexicanos, ya que durante el período del virreinato las fiestas religiosas o civiles sirvieron de excusa a los artesanos para imaginar o adaptar nuevos juguetes. En muchas pinturas de la época se pueden ver niñas con muñecas de porcelana o trapo y niños con trompos, así como cazos y espadas de cartón, máscaras, sonajas, figuras de tule, trompos, pirinolas, tarascas, piñatas, matracas y soldados de plomo. Alrededor de 1860, la producción de juguetes comenzó a realizarse en grandes fábricas, lo que amenazó la elaboración artesanal de juguetes típicos. Durante estos años abundaron muñecas de Europa con vestidos de colores muy mexicanos, desde entonces los juegos populares mexicanos compartieron su espacio con los extranjeros, se hicieron más figuras de barro,

There was a wide diffusion and fabrication of Mexican toys in the New Spain because during the viceroy period the religious and civil celebrations served as an excuse for the artisans to imagine and adapt new toys. In many paintings of the day you can admire girls with porcelain or rag dolls and boys spinning tops, as well as dippers and carton swords, masks, rattles, tule figurines, tops, pirinolas, tarascas, piñatas, and lead soldiers. Around 1860 toys started being produced massively in fabrics, thus threatening the artisan elaboration of traditional toys. During these years there was an abundance of European dolls with dresses in very Mexican colors and from here on traditional toys shared their space with foreign imports. More were created using adobe, rags, paper, lacquer, lead, wax, sugar, wire, brass, wicker, weed, hay, carton, woven palms, wood, tin, and cotton.

In modern times, the worldwide toy industry utilizes computers, electronics and even toxic materials; fortunately traditional Mexican toys are persistent in their form and original manufacture and this sets them apart from the rest for their originality and simplicity.

Cabe mencionar que expertos en pedagogía aseguran que el juguete tradicional mexicano es un gran impulsor del desarrollo en los niños, ya que estimulan la imaginación, aumentan el desarrollo de la memoria e incrementan la creatividad.

It’s worth mentioning that learning experts affirm that the traditional Mexican toy is a great motivator for a child’s development since it stimulates the imagination, increases memory development and creativity.

XEL-HÁ FORMS AN ALLIANCE WITH MEXICAN SCIENTISTS TO PRESERVE IT’S MILLENARY UNDERGROUND WATERS

el-Há es una maravilla natural ubicada en la costa norte del estado mexicano de Quintana Roo. Consta de un conjunto de caletas, lagunas, cenotes y cuevas con una extensión de 86 hectáreas (60% son para reserva), una selva baja subcaducifolia donde viven más de 100 especies de aves y alrededor de 230 de plantas, flores y árboles. Un sistema hidrológico da nombre a Xel-Há que en lengua maya significa “donde nacen las aguas”. La caleta es el hogar de 99 especies acuáticas donde además se mezclan las aguas saladas del mar Caribe con las aguas dulces de los manantiales y ríos subterráneos característicos de la península de Yucatán. El suelo de esta región es de tipo cárstico, es decir, propenso a la acción del agua, lo que ha facilitado la existencia de complejos sistemas de cavernas y cuevas sumergidas pero también es muy vulnerable a la contaminación.

el-há is a natural wonder located on the north coast of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, south of Cancun. It consists of a collection of caletas (inlets), lagoons, cenotes (sinkholes) and caverns which spread out over 86 hectares (213 acres) making up 60% percent of the park. It also features low deciduous jungle with more than 100 species of birds and 230 varieties of plants, flowers and trees. Xel-Há, which means “where the waters are born” in Maya, gets its name from the hydro geological system. The cove is home to 99 aquatic species and a place where the salty waters of the Caribbean mix with fresh water surging from the underground rivers that are characteristic of the Yucatan Peninsula. The geology of the region consists of limestone which is easily dissolved by rainwater. This has produced a complex system of submerged caves and caverns

La única fuente de agua potable para toda la península de Yucatán es un delgado “lente” de agua dulce que flota sobre el agua salada. En la Riviera Maya, a cinco kilómetros de la costa, dicho lente o reservorio de agua apenas tiene un espesor de 15 metros, mientras que en el centro de la península llega a tener hasta 60 metros. Conocer y proteger estas reservas de agua es básico para la vida y el sostenimiento de la industria turística de la que depende la gran mayoría de la población. Por ello Xel-Há se ha aliado estratégicamente con renombrados científicos mexicanos de la Red 26 INPLAYA

“Lo novedoso e incluso visionario –apunta el Dr. Luis E. Marín Stilman, lider del grupo de investigadores– por parte de Xel-Há es esta alianza con la academia. Quiere decir que las decisiones para proteger el agua serán con base en la ciencia. Esto no es nuevo en Alemania, Japón o EEUU, pero en México si y es digno de destacar esa visión.” Después de 16 meses de investigaciones multidisciplinarias los primeros resultados empiezan a salir a la luz “claro que ahora es fácil hablar de ello –puntualiza el Dr. Marín Stillman– pero en su momento lo que planteamos a los directivos de Xel-Há era un modelo teórico que tenía las mismas posibilidades de fallar como de tener éxito; eso le da más mérito al apoyo financiero, logístico y moral que la gente de los parques tuvieron con nosotros.” Xel-Há y Xcaret han aportado hasta el momento 28 mil usd y ya han comprometido 95 mil usd para 2006 de los 285 mil usd que el estudio requiere para continuar. “Es importante que este estudio reciba apoyo del más alto nivel gubernamental y del resto de la industria turística pues de esta manera lograremos poner información confiable y oportuna en el escritorio de los tomadores de decisiones (gobierno y desarrolladores privados) y de la sociedad en general para su conservación, por que en ello va no sólo el bienestar del ambiente sino de la población de toda esta zona, de la aportación económica del turismo para el país.” concluyó el Dr. Marín. Cabe destacarse que entre las aportaciones al conocimiento científico mundial de esta investigación está el haber desarrollado un modelo de mapeo y estudio hidrogeológico en sistemas cársticos presentes en otras latitudes como el mediterráneo y Australia, por ejemplo. which make the system highly vulnerable to contamination. The only source of potable water in the entire Yucatan Peninsula is a thin “lens” or natural reservoir of fresh water floating on the top of salt water. Along the Riviera Maya, five kilometers from the coast, this thin “lens” has a thickness of 15 meters deepening to 60 meters towards the center of the peninsula. Understanding and protecting these groundwater reserves is indispensable to sustaining life and the survival of the tourist industry on which most people in this region depend for a living. For this reason Xel-Há has established a strategic alliance with leading Mexican scientists from the Water Network of the Mexican Academy of Sciences (AMC) and scientists from the Geophysics Institute of the Mexican National University ( Instituto de Geofísica de la UNAM) of the Scientific Research Center of Yucatán (CYCY), and some speleologists who worked on a project to monitor water flow and quality and map the dynamics of subterranean rivers to establish their origin and how they are affected by human activities. “The visionary aspect of this” according to Dr. Luis E. Marin, Chairman of the Water Network, “Is Xel-Há´s alliance with the academic institutions of México, Xel-Há is a pioneer in science based decision making to administer the park, and to promote this type of decision making within the government. This is a truly novel approach not only in México, but throughout Latin America.” After 16 months of multidisciplinary research, the first results are becoming evident, “of course, it is easy to talk about it now”, says Dr. Marin, “but initially our proposal to Xel-Há was nothing but a theoretical model with equal chances of success of failure, this made the financial, logistic and moral support they provided even more remarkable”. Xel-Há and Xcaret have so far contributed $28,000 US and made an additional commitment of $95,000 US to continue with this research project. “It is important that this example of joint venture between private industry and academia receive government support from the highest levels as well as from the tourism industry. It is the only way that we will be able to provide dependable and timely information to policy makers and private developers. This entire country and population of this region benefits from the continuing success of tourism in México” ended Dr. Marin. The results obtained with this research project will easily the applicable to other parts of the world, including the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and other regions of the world with extensive karst systems.
