The former fishing village Lohme is situated high above the sea and directly before the gates of Jasmund National Park. Its small yacht harbour sits about 70 metres below the cliff coast and provides an impressive view to Cape Arkona. The Schwanstein, very close nearby, protrudes out of the water a few metres away from the coast. Ancient legends and myths surround this impressive 160 tons heavy granite boulder.

Relaxing bathing beaches, picturesque harbours and such idyllic villages as Klein Zicker, Gager/Groß Zicker, Middelhagen, Lobbe, Alt Reddevitz and Mariendorf make up the public face of the Mönchgut Peninsula. Nearly all of these places were once fishing villages and much of the past remains alive in them. Thatched houses and brick churches from the Middle Ages define the face that they reveal to visitors.

A historic city centre, the oldest church on the island, the natural jewel Nonnensee and dreamy little villages – Bergen and its surroundings will surprise you with many things to discover. At the same time and thanks to its central location, it’s also the “Heart of the Island”, the perfect starting point for outings and discovery tours. The story of Bergen begins with the construction of the Marienkirche, which was built after 1180 and is thus one of the oldest churches on the Rügen island. With the historic Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Tower and its friendly small-town feeling, Bergen offers a lot to see and do. With the Benedix House, right at the market square, Bergen can even boast being home to one of the oldest half-timber houses on the island. www.bergen.ruegen.de

The harbour town Sassnitz, where fishing boats and tour ferries set out to the sea, is the starting point for many tours into the national park. The old city centre with its well-kept and historic houses lined along narrow lanes is purely picturesque. An elegantly curved suspension bridge connects the centre with the town harbour, where fishermen bring their catch ashore and maritime cafés and businesses lure visitors to sit and relax.
