MidnightSeasonSun

With endless sunlight, Fairbanks’ summers are filled with energy and brimming with action. Between April 22 and August 20 the sun never goes down far enough for our skies to get truly dark. In fact, from mid-May through late July, Fairbanks experiences never-ending daylight for 70 days straight. This constant sunlight transforms life in pleasing and wonderous ways. Flowers, vegetables and other plantlife flourish here and the rousing midnight sun calls people to the outdoors. Middleof-the-night activities include running, biking, golfing and even baseball, where the Alaska Goldpanners start their historic solstice game at 10pm without ever turning the lights on. At the peak of solstice, the Midnight Sun Festival takes over downtown Fairbanks for a 12-hour street fair in honor of this Far North phenomenon. Go for a midnight run, explore a glorious garden, float the Chena River or indulge in a late-night dessert on an outdoor deck. With the midnight sun simply refusing to set, our top-of-the-world town enjoys one of the best summers the planet has to offer.

Heads Up! Use the Midnight Sun Tracker at explorefairbanks.com to find how many hours of daylight to expect for any day of the year to get the most out of your visit to the land of the midnight sun.

Having been in Fairbanks most of my life, I feel very fortunate to be able to live here. Some people save their entire lives just to be able to visit and I get to call it home! One of the best things are the inclusive and diverse communities that welcome people from around the world. The midnight sun that lights our summers gives endless opportunities to explore the picturesque lands and majestic mountains around us. The everlasting sunshine also gives ample opportunity to enjoy local spirits and beers with friends on a deck overlooking the river, around a fire pit or at a brewery.

Aurora Season

From August 21 to April 21, aurora viewing in Fairbanks lures people from all over the world. Our location is ideal—sitting directly under the “Auroral Oval,” a ring-shaped zone over the Far North where aurora activity is concentrated. Additionally, the region’s low precipitation means more clear nights, and low population density means less light pollution and darker skies. Together these factors make Fairbanks one of the top destinations for aurora viewing. On average, the aurora will be visible four out of five nights when the sky is clear and dark enough. Intensity varies from night to night and the best displays usually appear during the late evening to early morning hours. Scan the skies from a nearby vantage point and wait for the northern lights to appear. Book a tour for professional guidance or arrange to view them from a heated “aurorium” cabin, yurt or lodge. See them during an overnight dog sled adventure, on a snow cat tour or a flight above the Arctic Circle. Winter activities to pair with aurora viewing include ice fishing and snowmobiling. Ask your hotel front desk if they offer a wake-up call when the northern lights are out. No guarantees, but the longer you’re here, the better your chances of seeing a great show.

Heads Up! Use the Aurora Tracker at explorefairbanks.com with real-time and 3-day forecast data for aurora activity, weather and daylight hours to help you chase the northern lights.

Stop by the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center to pick up the Aurora Viewing Map & Guide featuring aurora facts and an easy-toread map with popular aurora viewing locations. Once you’ve seen the aurora, return to the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center for your personalized Aurora Certificate to take home.

Winter Season

Like a trip inside a snowglobe, Fairbanks offers winter—guaranteed. Our top-of-the-world location makes it one of the best places on Earth to see the captivating light of the aurora borealis, experience the exhilarating sport of dog mushing and view amazing outdoor ice sculptures. This surprising trio of events make the Winter Season a traveler’s snowy paradise. Other enthralling activities include cultural celebrations, art exhibitions and sporting events. Skiing, ice skating, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, ice fishing, curling, tubing and ice hockey abound.

Challenge snowcapped hills or birchladen trails by ski or snowshoe or mush a team of huskies through the wilderness. Visit Santa in North Pole, journey above the Arctic Circle or discover the incredible warmth of an Alaska hot spring at the end of an adventure-filled day. Plan for a truly memorable winter expedition in this sparkling land of aurora, ice and snow.

Awe-Inspiring Ice

As soon as winter comes to Fairbanks, ice artists begin creating dazzling works of art from massive blocks of ice. These larger-than-life masterpieces vary every year and never cease to capture both the mind and the imagination. Visit a year-round ice museum to see and learn about ice carving. February through March, the World Ice Art Championships and the International Ice Classic feature exquisite ice sculptures and offer the opportunity to sled down ice slides, wander through ice mazes and frolic in playgrounds made of ice and snow.

Denali National Park and Preserve

Denali

Journey into the wild and let the grandeur of the Alaska Range and North America’s highest peak take your breath away. Denali—meaning “the Great One” or “High One” in the Alaska Native Athabascan language—rises 20,310 feet (6,190 meters) into the sky and the surrounding Denali National Park and Preserve covers six million acres of pure wilderness. Although summer months are most popular, the park is enticing any time of year and is an easy two-hour drive or four-hour train trip from Fairbanks.

In summer, traverse the Denali Park Road in your own vehicle to mile 15 or venture deeper into the park on a tour bus. Flightseeing is another exciting way to view the Alaska Range and get up close to “the Great One.” The park’s varied terrain includes brilliant mountains, pristine rivers and lakes, colorful tundra, alpine meadows, sweeping vistas and abundant wildlife. Along the way you may spot moose, caribou, Dall sheep, grizzly bears, wolves or any of the hundreds of other species that call the park home.

Explore the National Parks

Hike Alaska’s ultimate wilderness, float a remote river to see caribou cross a northern valley, fish a serene alpine lake or simply stand in awe and listen to the call of the wild in one of Interior or Arctic Alaska’s other glorious national parks. Though mostly vast and untouched wilderness with few or no roads or established campsites, local air taxis provide flightseeing trips and outfitters guide day trips or overnight campouts to remote locations.

Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve, sometimes called Alaska’s ultimate wilderness, covers 8.4 million acres of pristine beauty in northern Alaska.

Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve is the largest national park in America at 13.2 million acres. Accessed from Alaska’s Interior, the park includes four mountain ranges and nine of North America’s sixteen highest peaks.

Kobuk Valley National Park is renowned for half a million caribou and sand dunes created from ancient glaciers in the Arctic region of northwestern Alaska.

Basecamp

Set deep in the heart of Alaska, Fairbanks is the perfect place from which to embark on once-in-a-lifetime adventures. Cross the Arctic Circle, explore spectacular tundra and boreal landscapes and shadow remarkable wildlife. In addition to Denali National Park just two hours south, the Arctic Circle and Yukon River are an accessible four- to five-hour drive north. Road trips to colorful Interior towns and lodges are easily within reach and villages without road access, refuges and parks are just a short flight away. Visit singular places in the Arctic like Utqiagvik— the northernmost city in the U.S.—and Nome, Fort Yukon, Anaktuvuk Pass, Coldfoot and Gates of the Arctic National Park. Alaska’s Interior is filled with historic sites and charming places like Nenana, Delta Junction, Chicken and Tok. Auto rentals, air and ground transportation, guided ecotours, fishing and boat charters and wildlife tours can be arranged through professional outfitters. Go on a late-summer polar bear tour, float a mighty river, fly fish a remote stream, take a flight to see glorious mountain and glacier views or simply be still in some wild place and take in nature’s extraordinary gifts. Let the warmth of our people guide you through Alaska’s vast and beautiful lands.

The jaw dropping landscape that fills Interior and Far North Alaska is a continuous pull to travel through these areas. Exploring here is more than an adventure; it’s a state of mind, allowing me to experience wildlife patterns and tundra vegetation that the majority of humans will never witness. This wilderness has the ability to make me feel equally insignificant and important, a reminder to be a more kind, respectful human. I truly hope more people are able to see firsthand the phenomena that is pristine Interior and Arctic Alaska.

Alaska Native Heritage

Fairbanks’ northern region reveals a rich tapestry of Alaska Native art and culture. There are many different indigenous groups in Alaska and each has their own way of life, including language, material culture and traditions. Alaska’s vast Interior is home to Athabascan people who were once nomadic but now live in small villages. Farther north, the Arctic is home to Inupiaq Inuit people. Adventurous travelers can visit remote villages and be inspired by the resourceful and contemporary lifestyle of Interior and Arctic peoples.

Alaska Native peoples create works of art out of strikingly different materials like caribou antler, moose hide, whale baleen and walrus ivory. Athabascans make baskets of birch bark and are renowned for exquisite beadwork. The Inupiaq Inuit of the Far North are often coastal and create elegant carvings of the natural world around them from ivory, bone and driftwood. Alaska Native artists demonstrate and sell their work in galleries and specialty stores and Alaska Native performing arts like drumming, dancing and fiddle playing can be seen during special events around town, offering an authentic view into the past as well as a bridge to the future.

One thing that Fairbanks has taught me about my own culture is how much history is in our own city, from the potlatches to the Native dances and sports at the World Eskimo-Indian Olympics.

One memory that stands out to me is the canvas tent inside the exhibit hall in the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center. I went there with my mom and she told me that when she was growing up, she and her 11 siblings would sleep in a tent just like that on the Yukon River while their parents were harvesting fish or berries or moose. I was so amazed because the tent was so small! Fairbanks holds a lot of history and the Natives here hold a lot of stories and I love that!

Discover Alaska's Golden Heart

A frontier town in the middle of a vast wilderness, Fairbanks is filled with artsy shops and venues and innovative attractions, activities and events that celebrate life in the Far North. The Fairbanks North Star Borough, which includes the cities of Fairbanks and North Pole and surrounding areas, has a population that hovers right around 100,000 residents. The people that call this spirited place home are independent, creative and tough-as-nails yet kindhearted—one of many reasons Fairbanks is known as the “Golden Heart of Alaska.”

With the midnight sun and aurora and quality attractions and activities, the Fairbanks region is a popular year-round destination for guests from the U.S. and abroad. Historic aspects of Fairbanks are revealed through attractions and activities such as gold panning, Alaska Native cultural programs and exhibitions about the Alaska Highway and the pipeline.

Navigate the scenic and cultural wonders of the Interior and Far North, whether by steamboat along the Chena River, by a musher and dog team, by bush plane, or via a four-wheel-drive vehicle. If you really want to know Alaska, go straight to the heart.

Gold Rush History

In 1902, a gold strike by Italian immigrant Felix Pedro prompted Captain E.T. Barnette to build a trading post on the banks of the Chena River and the gold rush to Fairbanks was on. The town has grown over the last century but Fairbanks still embraces its colorful gold rush roots. Today, attractions and fun-filled events celebrate the historic quest for gold. See the largest public display of gold in the state at the university’s museum or tour a gold dredge. Try your hand at gold panning or visit a local jeweler to find that perfect gold nugget souvenir to take back home.

Downtown Fairbanks

Downtown Fairbanks is a delightful blend of old and new, made up of historic buildings dating back to gold rush days, a contemporary art scene, an array of delicious eating and drinking establishments, museums, shops, the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center and iconic Golden Heart Plaza. An eclectic variety of public artworks can be found throughout the area—steam-heat vent pipes are whimsically painted, vibrant murals decorate building exteriors, colorful winter- and holiday-themed lights adorn lampposts and sculptures beautify downtown streets and businesses.

Fairbanks is sometimes called “River City” because of the Chena River that runs right through the heart of town. Take a stroll down the two-mile river walk along the Chena River and enjoy the interesting sites, sculptures and flowers along the way. Start at the antler arch at the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center and head towards Golden Heart Plaza, continue past the bridges lined with flags and finish at beloved Pioneer Park.

Local Cuisine, Spirits & Markets

Our little river city has debuted onto the cuisine and spirits stage with flair and flavor. We have breweries, distilleries, corner coffee huts, specialty food trucks and loads of dine-in, drive-thru and take-out eateries and restaurants that assure no one goes hungry. Many restaurants utilize local produce, meat and seafood in their recipes. Savor Alaskan comfort foods like grilled salmon, king crab and reindeer sausage alongside home-grown Yukon gold potatoes and sweet garden-fresh baby carrots. But Fairbanks’ eclectic palate has also given rise to cosmopolitan cafés featuring sushi, Vietnamese, Indian, vegan, award winning BBQ and Thai food…Fairbanks is wild about Thai—as proven by the well over 20 Thai food restaurants in the area.

Made in Fairbanks

Homegrown small businesses turn Alaska produce into for-sale items such as Alaskan jam, honey, seasonings, mustards, vinegars, baked goods and sweet treats like Hot Licks Homemade Ice Cream that uses just-picked wild blueberries in their super premium ice cream. Fairbanks is also home to four coffee roasters including the artsy and welcoming McCafferty’s, awardwinning Alaska Coffee Roasting Co., North Pole Coffee Roasting Company and Lifeline Coffee Roasters.

Other “Made in Alaska” items sold in the Fairbanks area include Alaska Native arts and crafts as well as creations by local small businesses and artisans.

Unique wood bowls, gold nugget jewelry, hand-sewn textiles, knives embellished with wood and antler and more. Whether you’re looking for the perfect souvenir to remember your journey or gifts for friends and family back home, you’ll find authentic, eye-catching wares here in the heart of Alaska.

Breweries

With beers named after quintessential Alaskan items like ptarmigan, the northern lights and brown bears, the brewery scene in Fairbanks is strong. The small-batch, small-town focused HooDoo Brewing Company, named after the Alaskan mountains bearing the same name, takes the phrase “the ART of brewing” totally seriously. New kid on the block Latitude 65 Brewing Company converted an old athletic club into an inviting space serving up delicious beers and tasty ciders. Housed in an attractive, renovated historic roadhouse, Silver Gulch Brewing & Bottling Company is home to original, great tasting brews. Rounding out the Fairbanks beer scene are the cool and quirky Midnight Mine Brewing Company and the laid-back Black Spruce Brewing Company while the 49th State Brewery is just a hundred miles down the road in Healy on the way to Denali National Park. You can also sample creations from many of these local breweries at restaurants, bars and tap houses in the area.

Fairbanks’ brewers learned how to thrive in such a remote location. Much like the residents of the town, nothing seems to be holding them back.

Hudson Lindenberger, author and journalist

Distilleries

Summon the spirits with a visit to one (or more) of four amazing distilleries in the Fairbanks area. Ursa Major, whose name means “great bear,” uses barley from Delta Junction to craft exceptionally smooth spirits including Fairbanks Sourdough Rum (Alaska’s first rum), Summer Harvest Gin and their flagship Long Winter Vodka. Historic Fairbanks City Hall has never looked so good with Fairbanks Distilling Company setting up shop to serve delicious high-latitude, ultra-premium spirits made from Alaskan-sourced grains, berries, potatoes and more. Hoarfrost Distilling features hand crafted alcohol infused with local berries and produce and offers its flagship Crystal Vodka by the bottle. Arctic Harvest truly embraces the phrase “farm to table” as they grow all the grains used to make their highend spirits on a beautiful family farm.

Farmers Markets

Fairbanks’ everlasting summer sunshine creates amazing growth, making the local farmers markets extraordinary. Northern farmers attest that produce tastes better because of the climate—cool nights make the vegetables sweeter and more delicious than those grown in warmer climates. Find tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, cucumbers, zucchini, lettuce and more at seasonal markets and brighten your day with a beautiful locally grown bouquet. You’ll find home-made goodies and fantastic food trucks and stands to make sure you don’t go hungry. Artwork, jewelry and other gifts adorn the market stalls where you’re sure to find the perfect keepsake to remind you of your visit to the land of the midnight sun.

Travel planning information for Denali National Park & nearby communities.

Fairbanks and Interior Alaska are well known for the large, unspoiled landscapes that serve as great habitat for animals, including Denali National Park. Each highway branching out from Fairbanks crosses large tracts of boreal forest, subalpine or Arctic tundra. Along the way, you may be able to see black bear, caribou and moose. The nearby Chena River State Recreation Area is a wild forest with many sloughs and a mixture of treed and treeless landscapes. Moose and beaver frequent this area as well as other small animals like ermine, fox and red squirrels. Don’t forget your binoculars to scope close-up views.

Moose

Moose are a common part of life for most Alaskans. These massive, hulking creatures wander through our sports fields, poke around our neighborhoods and nonchalantly cross our roads and highways. Moose are generally happy to pose for a picture or two but leave them plenty of room, especially when calves are nearby.

Caribou

Caribou travel in large herds during spring and fall migrations but are often seen in small bands or as individuals during the summer. Caribou’s domesticated cousin are called reindeer. In Fairbanks, some visitor attractions include experiences with reindeer and are a popular way to learn about these fascinating animals and snap an up-close photo or selfie.

Bear

In summer, look for bears fishing along streams with spawning salmon. In late summer and fall, they are often found feeding on berries in open meadows or on the tundra. Black bear populations are plentiful in Alaska’s Interior, but sightings of this shy animal are rare outside of national parks and state recreation areas. Bring along potent bear spray if you’re hiking outside of urban areas, just in case.

Fox

The red fox is common in the Fairbanks area and can sometimes be seen darting across the road in woody, brushy areas. If you’re lucky, you may see one with the “cross” coloration—a dark band crossing the shoulders and back. Look for the Arctic fox north of the Brooks Range. White in winter and gray or brown in summer, its ears and body are smaller compared to the red fox.

Interior Neighbors

Alaska’s vast Interior spans over 175,000 square miles of magnificent landscape. This inland area between the Alaska Range to the south and the Brooks Range to the north comprises about 30 percent of the state— an enormous region as large as the states of Indiana, New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio combined! The Interior has diversity in its people, landscape, climate, culture and wildlife. This is reflected in the various activities, dining, shopping, lodging, services and means of transportation that match the interests and lifestyles of its visitors.

Driving Fairbanks to Valdez— Alaska’s Adventure Corridor

Rich in history and spectacular scenery, Alaska’s adventure corridor spans much of the Interior from Fairbanks along the Richardson Highway to Valdez. The journey crosses mighty rivers, traverses majestic mountain passes and brushes by historic roadhouses. Heading south from Fairbanks, visit with Santa Claus in North Pole, where “the spirit of Christmas lives year-round.” Explore Delta Junction, the official end of the Alaska Highway, and Paxson at the crossroads of the Richardson and Denali highways with scenic vistas and wildlife sightings. The Copper River with its world-renowned salmon and the Gulkana, Delta and Tanana rivers offer scenic recreation with rafting, fishing and jet boat tours. Glaciers are visible from the highway or by flight or boat tour. The Copper River Valley features the towns of Glennallen, Copper Center, Gulkana and Gakona rich with gold rush history and Alaska Native culture.

The final leg of the corridor ends in Valdez, established by turn-of-the-century gold prospectors who headed north. Treks on Worthington and Valdez glaciers, Prince William Sound cruises, fishing and outdoor activities are highlights of this incredible trip south.

Fairbanks—Basecamp for Alaska’s Arctic

Just 140 (225 km) air miles or 195 (314 km) road miles below the Arctic Circle, Fairbanks is the farthest north city in the United States accessible by air, road and rail. This location affords Fairbanks the most advantageous position to access, research, promote and support the Arctic. Fairbanks has long had a symbiotic relationship with the Arctic region. Local businesses provide transportation and innovative services to Arctic neighbors and the University of Alaska Fairbanks is devoted to a wide variety of Arctic studies. Even the regional military bases recognize the strategic location and singular environment the area provides. From Fairbanks, visitors can easily take an extraordinary tour north above the Arctic Circle by road or plane. After an unforgettable journey above the Arctic Circle, stop by the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center in downtown Fairbanks to pick up your official Arctic Circle Certificate.

Despite being almost 500 miles away from oceanside ports in Southcentral Alaska, Fairbanks is a popular destination in the summer for visitors taking a cruise to the state. Many cruise lines coming to Alaska offer one-way Gulf of Alaska trips that include the port of Vancouver in Canada and either Whittier or Seward as the port in Alaska. These cruises typically offer land tour packages that incorporate Fairbanks and Denali National Park into their itinerary. In the packages, Fairbanks is generally the first or last place people visit, making it easy for visitors to add on extra days to experience more of Alaska’s Interior and Arctic with Fairbanks as their basecamp. Other cruise visitors will take a one-way cruise across the Gulf of Alaska and then explore Fairbanks and other communities on the road or rail system on their own.

Alaska’s cruise season runs from May to September, with each month offering a different experience for visitors who come to Fairbanks. May to early June will generally see smaller crowds and better value as well as giving people a chance to experience 24 hours of daylight, which extends almost to the end of July. Mid-June to early August are the peak summer months when Fairbanks offers the warmest weather in the state and around-the-clock activities and events. From mid-August through September, visitors have a chance of seeing the northern lights in one of the best destinations in the world to see them. There are numerous ways cruise ship passengers to Alaska can enjoy the state’s “farthest north port” of Fairbanks. Contact your travel agent or cruise company for more details.

Travel Tips, Maps & More

Fairbanks is the farthest north city in Alaska and the U.S. accessible by air, rail, road and, in some cases, ocean! Due to our popularity as a destination, planning your travel and booking accommodations, activities and attractions early is encouraged. Here are a few tips to help you get to and around Fairbanks.

Air Alaska Airlines and Delta Air Lines offer yearround direct flights to and from Seattle. Delta Air Lines, American Airlines and United Airlines typically offer direct service to and from other Lower 48 cities during the summer season. There are a variety of connecting flights that make getting to Fairbanks easy from anywhere in the U.S. Within the state, Alaska Airlines provides year-round direct service to and from Anchorage while regional air carriers, including Wright Air Service and Warbelow’s Air, provide frequent air service between Fairbanks and numerous Interior Alaska rural communities. German airline Condor offers weekly summer service between Fairbanks and Frankfurt.

Rail All aboard! The Alaska Railroad provides yearround service to Fairbanks. The daily summer train between Fairbanks and Anchorage is a magnificent 12-hour journey that stops in Talkeetna and Denali National Park. In the winter, the train offers service between Anchorage and Fairbanks, allowing passengers to experience remote winter in Alaska from the comfort of a warm railcar.

Road To get around town, rental cars and motorhomes, shuttles, taxis and rideshare services are available in addition to the Fairbanks MACS Transit Bus System. Statewide shuttle companies provide daily transportation to many locations.

Gravel road rental cars and campers are available from some vendors for travel on the Dalton and Denali highways. Motor vehicle liability insurance is required, seat belts are mandatory, children under seven must ride in a child safety seat and helmets are required for motorcycle passengers.

Ocean Major cruise lines offer land tour packages that will bring you to Fairbanks and Denali National Park. Passengers opting for a one-way cruise often start or finish their Alaska vacation in Fairbanks, touring the rest of the state by road or rail. Another ocean option is the classic Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS), which has been operating yearround since 1963.

Highways

Alaska offers some of America’s most amazing motoring adventures over a variety of terrain. Roads range from two-lane highways to narrow dirt roads. Many Interior Alaska roads have uneven surfaces due to the thawing of the frozen ground below the road surface. Road work happens in the summer, so expect occasional delays.

• The Alaska Highway (#2) is a fully paved highway with services about 50 miles apart and serves as Alaska’s main road artery to the Lower 48.

• The Elliott Highway (#2) extends north from Fox to Livengood, then west to Manley Hot Springs.

• The Parks Highway (#3) links Fairbanks and Anchorage, a 360-mile drive and passes by Denali National Park.

• The Richardson Highway (#4) is the home stretch of the Alaska Highway leading north from Delta Junction through North Pole to Fairbanks.

• The Steese Highway (#6) heads north from Fairbanks towards the White Mountains and the village of Circle, only the first half of the road is paved.

If using a rental car, make sure that your contract allows travel on the following highways:

• The Denali Highway (#8) spans 135 miles (217 km) of Interior Alaska, from Paxson on the Richardson Highway to Cantwell on the Parks Highway and offers outstanding views of the Alaska Range. Open mid-May through September, the road is mostly gravel with few services along the route.

• The Dalton Highway (#11), also known as “the Haul Road,” starts at Livengood. Following the route of the trans-Alaska oil pipeline to Prudhoe Bay, the road is open to the public for 496 miles (798 km) north of Fairbanks although services are very sparse.

Photographing Fairbanks

Midnight Sun Season, Aurora Season or Winter Season, any time of year is the right time to take photos in Fairbanks! In and around town you can snap a selfie in front of the farthest-north Antler Arch, a building mural, the Love Alaska sign, in Golden Heart Plaza or one of many other hot spots. Enjoy captivating Fairbanks, Interior and Arctic photos on Explore Fairbanks’ social media channels. Use hashtag #explorefairbanks and maybe you will find your photography showcased here next year!

Helpful tips

To capture the midnight sun:

• A lower ISO setting usually means less grain (noise) and results in a cleaner image. Try to keep the ISO at the lowest setting, if possible.

• Try exposing for the brightest part of the scene, preventing areas around the sun from being washed out.

• After the sun goes down below the horizon, don’t leave right away. Keep watching the light and colors in the sky and keep shooting. The best color often happens after the sun has set.

When shooting the aurora:

• Use a digital camera with manual settings and a solid tripod and use a remote shutter to minimize camera shake.

• Locate a dark area with minimal light ambience. Point your camera at the northern sky and compose your medium distance foreground with a fixed object such as trees, hills or a cabin.

• Stay up all night regardless of cloudy weather as conditions change quickly. Remember, intensity varies nightly with the best displays during late evening to early morning hours.
