Wetlands and native bush have been preserved and new plantings complement the surrounding environment creating a course where every hole has a unique appeal. Dry stone walls lining the fairways reflect the course’s heritage as a high country farm. Wanaka Golf Club layout, with great value for money. Measuring 5753m (blues) and 5474m (whites) the course isn’t long by modern standards, but careful course management and the ability to shape your shots is important if you want to score well. The small greens and natural contours of the land also present their own challenge, so playing safe to the middle of the greens is recommended. It’s also important to try and keep your eye on the ball, as the spectacular views across the town and lake to Mount Aspiring National Park are some of the best in New Zealand, and can certainly add an extra distraction to your game. The two nines are very different. The front-nine, which was established in the

1930s, features an undulating layout with small greens nestled amongst the rolling terrain. The back nine, which was added across the road in 1967, is much longer and slightly flatter—but no less spectacular. The club has progressed significantly in the past decade with capital improvements and course upgrades, making it one of the most scenic and playable courses around. Green fees are a modest $80, and the club features all the usual facilities you’d expect from a quality club, including club and cart hire, fully-stocked pro shop and a café and bar. his vision into reality and in an incredibly short period of time Clearwater has achieved this aim.

Clearwater Golf Club has come a long way in a short time and it is hard to imagine that less than two decades ago there were no beautifully manicured greens and fairways, no buildings and no water to be seen.

Prior to becoming household names, Major champions Jason Dufner and Bubba Watson are just two of the golfers to have enjoyed the challenges of Clearwater. More recently as the venue for the ISPS HANDA NZ Women’s Open, Clearwater welcomed women’s golf star Lydia Ko as winner, while still an amateur, in 2013 and runner-up in 2014 (one of her earliest professional events).

It was always the dream of designer John Darby (known also for his work at The Hills and Millbrook) to create a course that would test some of the world’s top players. He enlisted the help of the legendary golfer Sir Bob Charles to turn

Clearwater Golf Club - Opening 9 The design blends two distinct styles of course, combining elements of links golf inspired by the great Scottish courses, with parkland golf featuring numerous water hazards more reminiscent of Florida. The front nine features wide, inviting fairways punctuated by strategicallyplaced bunkering. The par-72 course measures 6,526m from the championship tees. Six tee settings ensure a challenging but enjoyable round for players of all abilities. The course also features Executive Par 60 “30|30” challenge designed by Sir Bob Charles in 2013. The course offers superb practice areas, a fleet of modern electric golf carts (with free GPS) and well-equipped changing rooms with secure lockers and towels and toiletries provide free of charge. AUCKLAND Titirangi Golf Club

Established in 1909 by the Gardner brothers, Titirangi Golf Club employed the services of Dr Alister MacKenzie, world-famous for his work at Royal Melbourne, Cypress Point, Pasatiempo and Augusta. Dr MacKenzie arrived by boat from Australia in early 1927 to draw up plans for Titirangi Golf Club at its current location. Before his departure he demonstrated to members of the

Titirangi Golf Club - 8th green green staff his art of bunkering and green shaping to ensure it was done correctly. Titirangi has hosted the New Zealand Open three times and from 1977 to 1991 hosted the Australasian Tour event the Air New Zealand Shell Open. During this period some of the game’s greats walked Titirangi’s fairways such as Arnold Palmer, Peter Thomson, Nick Faldo, Curtis Strange, Greg Norman, Payne Stewart, Mark O’Meara, Wayne Grady, Bernhard Langer, Sandy Lyle & Al Geiberger. Al Geiberger famously quoted that Titirangi is the ‘longest short course’ he has ever played. As with many courses that can, over time, soften and deviate from the original plan, in the mid 1990’s Titirangi

Titirangi Golf Club - 8th fairway

Titirangi Golf Club - 12th fairway undertook a major restoration project with the help of golf architect Chris Pitman to bring back the MacKenzie character and charm. The result of this restoration has ensured that MacKenzie’s genius has returned and the golfer is both challenged and rewarded throughout the 18 holes, whilst being able to enjoy the tranquil native bush setting that borders numerous holes. Over the course of their round the golfer will be required to use virtually every club in the bag. There are great short Par-4s (1st, 2nd & 8th), along with the very stout par-4s (3rd, 9th, 12th & 17th). The two par-5s offer a birdie or even an eagle chance but plenty of trouble awaits any shot offline. The Par-3s face the 4 points of the compass, so judging which way the wind

is blowing can be a real test. With recently upgraded locker rooms and lounge, Titirangi offers a fine selection of food, wines and beer, making the Titirangi experience all the more complete. Titirangi is a members’ course that offers limited tee times for green fee play. Travelling golfers are advised to book their rounds well in advance to ensure they don’t miss out on this MacKenzie experience. Constantly rated one of the top courses in the country Titirangi is a must play while you are in Auckland. Phone: +64 9827 3967 Email: golfdirector@titirangigolf.co.nz Web: www.titirangigolf.co.nz

new 5th at Kauri Cliffs The new 5th hole at Kauri Cliffs

E

lite courses rarely make radical changes to their routings, but the brain trust at Kauri Cliffs GC has done exactly that -- transforming the 5th from a long, uphill, forced-carry par-3 to a short, “drop-shot” par-3 that manages to enhance and diversify a track already ranked among world top 100. Rees Jones was tasked with this delicate piece of course renovation. The architect was handpicked for the job by owner Julian Robertson, the American hedge fund legend who developed Kauri Cliffs

GC with architect David Harman in the late 1990s. The course opened in 2000 and today is ranked#74 in the world according to GOLF Magazine, and #39 on Golf Digest’s Global Top 100. “Julian’s concern was the orientation of 5th and 7th holes, which had been quite similar in orientation and length,” said Jones. “The thinking was, we wanted a shorter par-3, under 200 yards, that enhanced the entire, 18-hole golf experience, and that’s what we accomplished with the new no. 5.”

The architect took a par-3 that played some 200 yards from the back tee -slightly uphill, across a lush canyon -- and moved the tee 90 degrees to the left, to a hillside looking down on the same green complex. The 5th now plays downhill to a putting surface half the size, perched at the edge of that same canyon. Jones and the construction team broke ground on this project in April last year, just when Kauri Cliffs eased into its slower, winter season. (The architect also added a back tee on the par-4 2nd hole,

eliminated and combined bunkers on the par-4 4th, and added a forward tee on the daunting par-4 9th, mitigating the effects of an heroic canyon crossing.) “If you look at the scorecard, all the par3s were quite similar in yardage, even if they didn’t play at all the same,” said Kauri Cliffs head professional Jon Chapman. “The changes to no. 5 create more diversity, in addition to what is an entirely new hole. Rees Jones changed the frontnine dynamic completely. It’s going to be a phenomenal addition.”

Located conveniently close to the city of Dunedin, yet far enough away to enjoy the peace and quiet, The Otago is the perfect place to have a unique golfing experience not to missed when visiting New Zealand. The Otago Golf Club, founded in 1871, is recognised by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews as the oldest golf club in the Southern Hemisphere. Its 18 hole, par 71 Balmacewen course hosted the first Amateur Championship of New Zealand in 1893 and nine further national amateur championships since. The New Zealand Open Championship has been played there seven times. Among its signature holes are The Glen, (pictured) rated by the great Gene Sarazen (after he’d put three tee shots out of bounds

and reverted to a long iron) as among his 18 best golf holes in the world. When the golf is over all are welcome to enjoy our famous homemade food, locally brewed beer and or a glass of some excellent Otago wine. We would love you to come and visit us in Dunedin, see the sights, play a memorable round of golf as part of your trip.

The old 5th at Kauri Cliffs Chapman’s point is well taken. The other par-3s at Kauri Cliffs couldn’t be more different. No. 14 plays downhill along Kauri’s signature cliff-edge, with the Pacific Ocean ever present on the golfer’s left. No. 11 plays amid the marshlands at the layout’s lowest point, while No. 7 plays slightly uphill along the clifftops, across a gap in those cliffs, with the Pacific immediately on the golfer’s right. Each measures some 200 yards from the back tees, and though Kauri superintendent Andy Wood has great flexibility in differing yardages among multiple tees on each hole, no. 5 was just too much like no. 7. “It’s pretty neat, because we built a drop-shot that is just 140 yards from the back tee,” Jones said. “Now we can put a

different club in the player’s hands, and this new orientation provides long views of the cliffs and the ocean that weren’t there before, not till later in the round. Kauri Cliffs has such a tremendous range of golf holes, but it didn’t have that sort of hole. Now it does.” Rees Jones is a highly prolific and decorated course architect, with more than 100 original designs to his credit, on four continents. He’s also performed renovations at 100 more, including a series of US Open venues. This specialized line of work has earned him the sobriquet, “Open Doctor”. Jones had visited Kauri Cliffs and its sister course, Cape Kidnappers GC in Napier, NZ, three years ago on a pleasure trip with his wife . Jones happened to meet Robertson

The 7th at Kauri Cliffs

on this trip and eventually the owner convinced the architect to consider this remodeling project, as Harman passed away in 2005. “Kauri Cliffs truly is one of the great coastal golf courses in the world, because it can challenge the best and yet can be managed by the average golfer,” Jones said. “I think it’s unique, which is a credit to David Harman. I never did meet him but I know he was Arnold Palmer’s contractor for many years. The course looks like it’s been there forever, but it had to be built. It’s a very challenging piece of terrain. Harman clearly knew what to touch and what not to touch. “He designed and built one of the great golf experiences at Kauri Cliffs. It’s very special.”

Both located on New Zealand’s North Island, Kauri Cliffs GC and its sister course -the Tom Doak-designed Cape Kidnappers GC in Napier -- have each occupied spots in the major top 100 listings almost from the day they opened. Thanks to their celebrated on-site accommodations, Kauri and Cape are both considered among the elite stay & play venues in world golf. “The standards here are quite high, and improvements to no. 5 were something that Julian has been talking about for years,” Chapman said. “It’s funny because, in January, Julian made a hole in one on the old 5th. We were hoping he would still go ahead with the remodel... Now that he has, we’re thrilled with the results -- and we’re confident our golfers will feel the same.” •

Tournament Golf for non golfers! By Yvonne Hillard

S

awad dee Krab (or Sawad dee Kha for the ladies) from Thailand.

I thought I’d share a few snips from my husband Ian’s golfing holiday during the Centara World Masters Tournament (of course I came along for the ride!)

We departed Brisbane flying Thai International. There was excellent

service and delicious food for 9+ hrs. We spent our first night at the Novotel Suvarnabhumi—a massive complex alongside the airport—to be refreshed and ready for our adventure! Next morning ,we joined fellow golfers and non-golfers for the three-hour coach ride from Bangkok to Hua Hin (pronounced Waa Hin), stopping along the way to sample some of the local fare

(which was very hot and spicy!) The weather was hot and humid with snap downpours. Along the route we passed miles of salt drying in paddocks and acres of rice paddies (Thailand supplies 60% of the world’s Jasmine rice) and many roadside stalls selling mountains of salt, boxes of lychees and also green oranges (mandarins). We also passed over the famous River Kwai.

Tournament Day Centara Grand is truly a grand old lady (91yrs old) ‘historical elegance with gracious hospitality’ staffed by folk dressed per the King & I movie!! (I’d watched ‘Grand Budapest Hotel’ on the plane – there are many similarities.) We were greeted with a glass of lemon grass ‘wine’, before being escorted to our room. Much to our surprise and delight, we’d scored an upgrade to a private villa—

A Thai Cooking School

An Elephant Adventure rather stunning and luxurious, furnished with ‘olde world charm’, complete with our own private pool! This upgrade carries numerous entitlements as members of ‘The Club’ - delicious brekkie, morning and afternoon ‘high tea’, evening complimentary drinks and nibbles, late evening cordial service (coffee and liqueurs), laundry and newspapers and free Wi-Fi. Sunday evening’s welcome party was a scrumptious Thai banquet, with lots of spices, red hot chilli prawns, etc (it took a while to cool the mouth!) With 500 golfers and families etc, there was a massive quantity of food and drinks. Each

evening’s 19th hole gathering offers free food and drinks (Here comes a few more kilos on the scale!) Monday, non-golfers enjoyed a coach tour around Hua Hin, including a trip up monkey mountain to view the temple. I didn’t climb the 100-plus stairs, instead I checked out the Buddha and Monks on street level. Next, we were ‘treated’ to a monkey feeding display, and invited to partake after paying 100, 200 or 300 Baht ($1 = 30) for bits of chopped apple! One lady was very game: as soon as she was passed the bucket, the monkeys went wild - one scampering up onto her head. If it had been me, I’d have fainted

with fear! We were told to hold bags shut under the arm, otherwise the blighters would climb inside. Even though they were scratching, the chap assured us they were ever so clean. From here we visited ‘the most beautiful railway station’ built for King Rama 6th - right opposite his Royal golf course. (There was even a fee to use the toilet at ‘the most beautiful railway station’!) The last stop was the Summer Palace of King Rama 7th, an enormous structure of walkways and airy verandas. Thailand people truly love their ageing King Rama 9th. It’s amazing to see their devotion. Tuesday, we joined another tour

visiting another temple, then a school in the country supported by the Centara World Masters Tournament. We took along gifts –pens, drinks etc—which were distributed among the children. We took part in a ‘small concert’ and toured the school. The next stop was the ‘fake’ floating markets –a conglomerate of buildings built around a man-made lake. (The walkways were precarious, and it’s a wonder I didn’t end up in the murky water!) We finally returned around 3pm, very hot and bothered. After Ian returned from golf – which was late due to two huge thunderstorms –we walked up-town to try pizza (rather tasty, and safe), then took a stroll around the block. Following Ian’s directions, we found ourselves in a laneway literally lined with young ladies ‘looking to trade their wares’. Ian felt sure he’d have been whisked away if I’d not been there as chaperone. Wednesday, Ian had a free day so he booked on the ‘Best of Hua Hin’ tour whilst Jan and I visited Spa Cenvaree

Cooling Products Xtreme will keep you cool all day! “Simply wet and they stay cold for up to 6 hours!”

Exploring Thailand on a Tuk tuk

for a 90-minute foot and neck massage. Heavenly! We had a swim before attending ‘Surf and Turf’ night (with fellow golfers) at nearby Banyan Resort. An interesting side note: we noticed that something was eating the soap each night. There were big teeth marks, etc. I was sure it was an enormous rat having a picnic (lots of strange noises), so I had Ian hanging upside down trying to look under the bed! The mystery was eventually solved: the culprit was a local squirrel – who finally departed with the soap! Thursday morning was a Thai cooking class. What an experience! It started with browsing through local food markets. The sights and smells were rather unique (including the 1000yr-old pink eggs which are black inside). We then returned to the hotel where we each cooked five courses of a banquet (eating as we prepared every dish. Heavenly!). That afternoon, we joined the other lady from the cooking class for afternoon tea, and to learn some points on the

Golfers and caddies art of kumihimo (beading). Then in the evening we attended a BBQ buffet - various meats and seafood - most prepared as traditional Thai (and rather delicious). Friday morning, our newest best friend (from cooking class) invited us to share a tuk-tuk visiting a Thai Silk ‘emporium’. What an Alladin’s Cave of treasures (I managed to find a few things). A tailor was on the hotel premises, so over the course of our stay, he made a new winter blazer for me and two jackets for Ian. Friday evening was the ‘formal’ closure of the tournament –a beach party complete with flip-flops! It wasn’t quite

on the beach - but nearly - yet another spectacular Thai buffet. All week, free wine and Chang beer flowed (causing many sore heads!) Unfortunately Ian didn’t win any prizes! However, he thoroughly enjoyed every part of the tournament. Saturday - Jan and I chose to visit the ‘big shopping centre’ - again riding in a tuk-tuk. The major retailer was Tesco, with many specialty shops. We were able to secure a 4pm check-out, so yet another dip, afternoon tea, etc, before the threehour coach ride back to the airport. Seems we’ve been away much longer than a week –so many exciting

happenings. Never have I tasted such a variety of food - so flavoursome and all the various aromas. And my togs have never seen so much water. Being rather on the antique side, I hope they don’t disintegrate! To become a non-golfer at the next 2015 Centara World Masters in Hua Hin, Thailand 14 – 20 June, visit www. thailandworldmasters.com. More information can be found at www. gogolfing.net.au. Prices for the golfer package start from AU$1,550 per person (twin share); non golfer package starts from AU$1,100. •

I wander into what must be the world’s biggest bookstore. It occupies 6300 square metres of floor space and has more than one million books on the shelves. The mall even has an aquarium and underwater zoo with 30,000 sea creatures.

The Souks shopping experience water taxi dodging ancient dhows that trade around the Gulf – just as they did before the discovery of oil in the 1960s. There is an atmosphere of vibrancy around the markets. It’s where tourists and ex-pats haggle over textiles, spices, jewellery (including fake watches), shoes, bags, perfume and more. Step back in time and explore the labyrinth of cobbled streets in the restored Al Fahidi Historic District with its windtowered houses, art galleries and cafes. The Dubai Museum tells the story of how Dubai grew from a fishing village to the metropolis you see today. FLYING HIGH: If you want to see Dubai’s

The course, situated in the heart of the city on Dubai Creek, has a clubhouse that closely resembles the Sydney Opera House.

It’s midweek and the course, which has hosted two Dubai Classics, is teeming with golfers. Golf in Dubai strategic advisor David Spencer, an Australian, tells me more than 400,000 rounds are played on Dubai’s 11 courses annually. All the courses and clubhouses are firstclass with green fees ranging from $200$300 in peak season. Water, palm tree-line fairways and clever bunkering are a predominant feature at Dubai Creek. The 18th, which hugs Dubai Creek and has water down the right and in front of the green, is a super finishing hole. Back at the DP World Tour Championship,

The desert links course at The Els Club

Stuart and I bump into Ernie Els who is keen to chat. The Big Easy insists we play The Els Club – a course he designed and opened in 2008. We did and it’s a beauty with immaculate fairways and greens. It’s what you expect in that part of the world – a desert links experience. The holes all constitute characteristics from Ernie’s favourite courses – bunkers from Royal Melbourne, greens resembling Pinehurst No. 2 and wide, rolling links fairways. Ernie hasn’t tried to trick up the course. Naturally, being a desert links, there is plenty of sand (waste bunkers and sand traps). Mind you, the fairways are generous and it takes a very poor shot to find sand. There are four different sets of tees allowing players a selection of differing

lengths from which to play. If your game’s a little off, slip over to the Butch Harmon School of Golf for a lesson. Alternatively, unwind in the comfortable club and grab a bite to eat at the Big Easy Bar and Grill. DESERT SAFARI: We leave the golf course in good spirits and rendezvous with our colleagues to take in a desert safari. There, we get to ride in the back of an open 1950s Land Rover as we go in search of desert animals. A herd of gazelle come into view before we take in a falconry display, ride a camel and watch the sun set. What follows is a delicious Arabic dinner including camel, succulent lamb and chicken with ginger rice and courgettes. AUSSIE CONNECTION: Out for a stroll one evening we happen upon the Bushman’s Restaurant and Bar themed around the culture and cuisine of Australia.

Boomerangs adorn the walls, corks hang from the ceiling and there’s even a billabong-inspired terrace overlooking the ocean. Madison, a 21-year-old from Melbourne, tends the bar and James, a 22-year-old Brisbane singer/song writer, keeps diners entertained. Dubai really is a tourist paradise and a wonderful holiday destination for couples and families alike – especially around the finale to the Race to Dubai golf tournament as I discovered. For me, Dubai lived up to its promise of “wow” factor. And to paraphrase Arnold Schwarzenegger from The Terminator, “I’ll be back!” The writer was a guest of Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing and Emirates Airlines.
