The National Golf Club is one of the many spectacular courses on the bill for this year’s Mornington Peninsula Golf Classic optional social functions. For the first time, a program for non-playing partners has been arranged. Mornington Peninsula is Australia’s #1 golf destination and is well known for the number of quality golf courses, ranging from coastal links to resort style layouts. To quote Peter Thomson, golfing legend and internationally-renowned golf course architect: “For sheer variety, golf on the Mornington Peninsula is unmatched and for the traditional golfer’s welcome, it is hard to find better.”
Peter H (GA 13.3, who has played in three previous Classics) reflects the overall sentiment of this tournament with his recent comment: “The challenge and the environment is why we come to play as well as catching up with people from previous years.” Entry will be open in mid-March. In the meantime register your interest or find out more, by sending an email to info@golfmorningtonpeninsula.com.au. This is going to be a sell-out tournament, so lock in 5-8 October for the Sixth Annual Mornington Peninsula Golf Classic. •

Inside Golf recently visited this tropical oasis, and we experienced all the magic and beauty of this special location.
Arriving at the Intercontinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa, guests are welcomed by the drummer and guitar-strumming singers. Fijians love to sing as much as they love to smile and at the resort the staff emerge spontaneously to welcome guests.
The resort’s 271 air-conditioned rooms and suites feature generous private terraces or balconies allowing guests to relax on their day bed or in the private Cleopatra bath and watch the sunset.

This is where a bevy of resort and golf course-friendly staff will spoil you rotten. It’s where people hand out ice-cold face towels and cold drinks to overheated golfers. Natadola Bay, close to the ocean, is a seriously good test of golf. From the tee blocks, the fairways appear narrower than they really are. That’s because the metrehigh thick shrubbery hugs the short rough at every turn. Don’t worry about wayward drives because your next shot could be with your camera as the ocean comes into view on 14 of the 18 holes as you journey through the Fijian landscape.

K
nown as Australia’s Colour City, Orange, NSW is a modern city that has grown from its rich mining past. Named in the mid 1800’s after the Prince of Orange (who later became the King of Holland) Orange was the home to Australia’s first payable gold discovery at Ophir in 1851. Just 3 ½ hours from Sydney and within easy reach of the Blue Mountains, visitors will discover a welcoming city, rich in local history, a flourishing cultural scene, fruitful landscapes, historical buildings, art and culture and some of the best food
and wine in Australia. A striking feature of the landscape – Mount Canobolas – at 1,395 metres is the highest peak in a straight line between the Blue Mountains and Perth. Orange is the highest wine region in Australia, and the Orange FOOD Week (10-19 April) is one of Australia’s longest-running regional food events. Plus, with three fabulous golf courses, Orange is the perfect destination for a golf getaway. This year’s 2015 City of Orange Golf Championship (3-5 October) features 54
holes of golf at Duntryleague, Wentworth and Orange Ex-Services’ Country Club. This championship is open to both men and women with prizes for each grade up for grabs daily. With $6,000 in prizes, a $90 entry fee for three days of golf, this represents outstanding value.

With all grades playing each course once over the three-day event, it has certainly enhanced the atmosphere with what is already a great event and has allowed participants to make new friends across all grades.

Stroke Play Championship winners will be decided at the Paraparaumu Beach Links Golf course on March 26. Paraparaumu, which has rated as high as 71st position in the world by US Golf Magazine, has hosted the New Zealand Open a record 12 times. Officially, it is also the only New Zealand course that Tiger Woods has played, when he competed in the 2002 New Zealand Open. The oldest club in the Hawkes Bay, and the host of the inaugural New Zealand Open in 1907, Napier Golf Club is due to host the 2015 New Zealand Women’s Autumn Foursomes on March 23-26. Also known as Waiohiki, the club has attracted some of the top amateur women players in its 79-year history, as well as sustaining a rich social program.

Nelson Golf Club was set to host the 31st New Zealand Men’s Seniors in February, a tournament that consistently attracts more than 150 entries from around the globe. Defending champion Michael Barltrop had his work cut out for him this year on the challenging links course, which had never previously hosted a men’s national open. Nelson has been hosting big tournaments for more than 100 years. In 1912, the New Zealand Ladies Golf Championship was held there, and 10
The first New Zealand Speedgolf Open was scheduled to tee off at the Rotorua Golf Club in late February, with Olympic 1500m silver medallist Nick Willis set to ‘take off’. Willis is a big fan of the game, in which gross scores are added to completion times to derive a composite score. Willis scored 130.20 when he competed in the first round of the 2013 World Speedgolf Championship. The tally was a combination of his 86 gross score plus the 44 minutes and 20 seconds to complete the course.
Speedgolf is fun, fast, fitness-oriented and open to all newcomers, keen athletes and regular or casual golfers. The 2015 winners will win a place in the Speedgolf World Championships in Oregon later in the year.

International cricket stars confirmed to tee it up at the Hills and Millbrook Resort include Sir Viv Richards, Brian Lara, Sir Ian Botham, Graeme Swann, Ricky Ponting, Shane Warne, Stephen Fleming, Nathan Astle and Mark Richardson. Richards, Lara and company will compete in the pro-am teams challenge event of the tournament, in which amateur players are partnered with a professional in a twoball best-ball team format. And while booking flights, hotels and other attractions are certainly top of mind, one aspect that should absolutely be part of your planning is travel insurance. Imagine you are holidaying in the Greek islands with your spouse and you develop a serious illness. The local doctor refers you to Athens which has suitable medical facilities. The medical centre at Athens recommends hospitalisation so you can be monitored. Your spouse stays in a nearby hotel to support you when you need them the most. Sound far fetched? This is what happened to one Australian Seniors travel insurance policyholder. The
policyholder was compensated for their hospital costs and all other overseas medical expenses as well as their spouse’s accommodation during the time the policyholder was in hospital. The policyholder wrote to Australian Seniors Insurance Agency to say: “We wish to thank you for your prompt and professional handling of the recent medical emergency [we] experienced whilst overseas. We have advised all our friends and business associates of your excellent service and caring attention during this entire episode.” When you’re planning your next trip, consider an Australian Seniors Travel Insurance policy. One trip international policies start from $49^. Seniors Travel Insurance provides benefits like Overseas Medical and Dental Expenses; Luggage and Travel Documents, including Loss, Theft or Damage; Loss of Deposits and Cancellation Charges; Additional Expenses; Replacement of Money and more. In the meantime, here are some tips to help you steer clear of some of the most common mishaps and mayhem that can mess up your holiday.
Before you go
• Passport and Visas – check passport has at least six months’ validity from date of return to your country, and any visa requirements.
• Health – Take a list of all your current medications, their generic names, dosages and frequency taken. • Insurance –Travel insurance is as essential as your passport. • Mobile Devices – Turn off global roaming and data on your phone before you leave. Pick up a local SIM card at your destination. • Photocopy Documents – Photocopy your passport and travel documents. Carry a copy with you, separate from your main luggage and leave a copy at home with family. While travelling • Arrange Safe Transportation – use reputable transportation companies and avoid unmetered taxis. • Keep Your Belongings Safe – keep belongings close to you at all times, be wary of strangers and take care in new and unfamiliar areas. Niseko Tokyu Hanazono Golf Course 5th hole

F
or years, Japan was branded as an expensive and hard-to-navigate place to play golf. Green fees started at $200 and visitors were extremely rare, especially on a golf course. Times have changed. These days Japan is welcoming record numbers of foreign visitors and becoming steadily more international. This is part of a campaign by the government to encourage more visitors to the shores of Japan in the run up to the 2019 Rugby World Cup and the Summer Olympics in 2020.
Hokkaido, the northern island of Japan, has long been a popular place to visit. As well as its scenic beauty, the northern island is a refuge from the excessive temperatures and humidity of the south. In addition, you have outstanding local cuisine and soothing volcanic hot springs all over the island. It is also a fantastic place to play golf with 170 courses for its 5.5 million population. Just a two-hour drive south from capital city Sapporo (and the airport), Niseko has become very familiar as a winter resort but is increasingly gaining ground as a
green season destination. The Niseko area offers an array of summer activities for golfers and non-golfers alike including white water rafting, mountain biking, road biking and hiking. Niseko boasts many high quality courses in a relatively small, easily– accessible area. There are seven within 40 minutes and three very close to Niseko. Courses are well-kept, interestingly routed and offer something for everyone with a good sprinkling of different hole types and challenges. The views are spectacular, with Mt Yotei and other

mountains looming at various points in the round, guaranteeing that many holes will stick in your memory long after you leave the area. Onsens are one of the “must try” experiences for any trip to Japan. These natural hot springs not only help soothe the muscles after a round of golf, but also help revitalise your body. Niseko and the surrounding area boast a variety of onsens to choose from, many of which are located at the golf course and are included in the green fees. Packages can include rental cars with English GPS systems. Driving is easy - on the left-hand side, with roads built extra wide to allow for the metres of snowfall every winter. Bookings for rounds of golf, summer activities and restaurants can be made in advance or in-resort via the English-speaking staff at Niseko Powder Connection. A variety of luxury self-contained holiday apartments are on offer in Hirafu Village, just 10 - 15 min drive from the following courses.
Onsen Niseko Tokyu Hanazono Golf Course (Championship: 7003y, Blue: 6760y, Regular: 6343y, Forward: 5278y, Par 72) This is widely considered to be the ‘best’ course in this immediate area. This course offers four tees to suit different levels of player and is a real test from the championship tees. This course has some beautiful holes, particularly when Mt Yotei rises majestically in the background. The course offers a variety of holes that please the eye and keep the mind interested. These include the Par-3 17th which features a slightly elevated tee with water protecting the left and bunkers on the right, and the tough par-4 4th, which requires a long and straight drive, leaving you an uphill shot to a well-protected and tricky green. Niseko Village Golf Course (Blue: 6845y, White: 6422y, Red: 5313y Par 73) This is another course very close to the heart of Niseko and located right next to
the Hilton Hotel. This is quite a wide and forgiving course. To score well, though, you have to think about ball placement. One of the signature features of the course is the 10th – a 721-yard par-6! Another hole of note is the beautiful Par-5 2nd – a slight dogleg left that, as you turn the corner, opens up a magnificent view of Mt Yotei. Niseko Golf Course (Black: 6805y, Blue: 6306y, White: 5833y, Red: 507y2 Par 72) This course was designed by Arnold Palmer and has become a favourite of many locals in recent times. The gradient changes are an integral element of the layout providing frequent club selection challenges. There are some great risk/ reward par-5s on this course as well as some stunning par-3s, like the par-3 17th: This tee shot is hit from a very elevated tee onto the green, seemingly miles below. Watch your ball float in the air for an age before hitting the mark.
Niseko Tokyu Hanazono Golf Course 7th hole There are a number of other courses in the immediate area such as A-Brand in Yoichi with its opulent baronial castle clubhouse (which even features a stuffed polar bear in the lobby!) There are also the four courses (Wood, River, Lake and Tower) at Rusutsu which are well worth a visit. Two of them were designed by Curtis Strange and The Tower Course even offers night golf in the summer months on 9 of its holes. There is also Niseko Golf and Resort which offers an interesting test and has reasonable green fees.

BARNBOUGLE 4 BALL CHALLENGE
Club golfers go bananas in the Apple Isle Tasmania may be well known as the Apple Isle, but it was Bananas in Pyjamas that stole the show during a fortnight of tournaments for club golfers in Tasmania in January. Allocating team colours was a new innovation for the Barnbougle Challenge and ‘yellow’ team members Jeff Canning and Bob Cameron from Sydney were a sensation coming dressed as B1 and B2 to the opening night dinner.
A
capacity field of 88 golfers traveled to the seaside town of Bridport, in northern Tasmania, for the Barnbougle Golf Challenge. Reminiscent of the famed courses of Scotland and Ireland, Barnbougle Dunes and the neighbouring Lost Farm are ranked Australia’s top two public access courses and ensconced in the world’s top 100.
To add to the fun, players were also drawn into bigger teams of 10 to 12 players. Players came dressed in their team colours to the welcome dinner. The enthusiasm and creativity in the costumes set the tone for great fun. Theme songs, poems and jokes based around team colours evolved and were rehearsed for a final night performance.
Playing as a team of two, the unique competition format featured best ball, Ambrose and aggregate events. Popular with couples, there were 3 mixed divisions as well as men’s and ladies divisions.
Jenny Brooks from Latrobe in Melbourne combined with Gwen Clutterbuck from Oxley to win the ladies division and really enjoyed both courses. “We loved discovering these courses that were like nothing else we have ever played. The combination of rolling farm

land, sand dunes and natural waterways make every hole unique. You feel like you are the only players on course.” “The hilltop restaurant overlooking the course and Bass Strait is stunning and the rooms were luxurious.” Romney and Lee Whitchurch from Beacon Hills in Victoria were part of the winning ‘Blue’ team. “We named ourselves the Barbougle Blues and doctored Carlton footy club’s theme song for our final night performance. Let’s just say we had better timing on the golf course.” The fifth annual Barnbougle Challenge runs 16 to 22 January 2016. More: www.gogolfing.net.au

WREST POINT INTERNATIONAL MASTERS T he week prior to the Barnbougle Challenge saw more than 300 golfers from all over Australia and international visitors from as far afield as Scotland contest the Wrest Point International Masters in Hobart.
Festivities culminated with a glamorous gala dinner where more than $35,000 in golf prizes and lucky draws were presented before a 5 piece band, playing popular tunes, had the dance floor packed.
Entrants came from 116 clubs, while 24 from Bargara near Bundaberg in Queensland was the most from any one club.
First timer Doug Renshaw from Perth was in high praise of the whole event experience. “The courses were awesome. Royal Hobart is immaculately conditioned and the views from Tasmania Golf Club are stunning. Go Golfing arranged our flights to Tasmania including free carriage of our golf clubs with Virgin and their hospitality and organization was first class.”
Open to club golfers aged 35 plus, competition is played in age and handicap divisions. Playing 2 rounds at both Royal Hobart and Tasmania golf clubs, all golfers play stableford while ‘A’ graders are also eligible to compete for the best gross. 75-year-old Jean Thomas from Redcliffe in Queensland proved age was no barrier, carding a 72 hole total of 388, the best of all the ladies and a runaway winner of the ladies 66+ gross championship. Madeleine Barnett from Concord, scored 141 stableford points, the highest total of all the ladies.
“The quality of the player packs, dinners, entertainment and generous prize table made this event sensational value. I played with great characters from places I’ve never heard of and have made plans to catch up at next year’s event. I can’t wait!”
Neil Faulks from Tasmania Golf Club had rounds of 77, 74, 78 and 79 to record the best stroke score of all the men and a narrow winner in the men’s 35-55 division.
Coupled with daily adjustments and significant handicap reductions for players scoring consistently well, many divisions were keenly contested. The average Stableford division winner scored 135 points, well short of the 144 points if you played to your handicap every day.
Awarded Oceania’s Best Golf Tour Operator at the 2014 World Golf Awards, tournament organisers Go Golfing undertake a 6-month review of all player handicaps to ensure a fair playing field.
Voted Australia’s best ‘week of golf’ for the past six years, the 15th annual Wrest Point Masters featured top class entertainment and nightly social events. Phil Cass, winner of the Gold ‘Mo Award’
for best live entertainer in Australia, performed his comedy magic show at the welcome dinner. The St Hallett winemaker dinner featured a decadent 4 course menu with matched wines and stunning views of the Derwent River. The nightly 19th Hole happy hours featured golf presentations and lucky draws. Tours to historic Richmond, wineries, MONA, Port Arthur and Bruny Island were popular among participants.
According to tournament director Mark Hawley, January is a great time to visit Tasmania. “With long sunny days and temps in the high 20’s, the weather is perfect for golf and touring around. It’s nice to be here in Tasmania when the rest of Australia is battling heat waves and storms.” The 16th annual Wrest Point International Masters runs 10-15 January 2016. More: www.gogolfing.net.au •
