TOOWOOMBA

incredible golfing opportunities available, Toowoomba should be at the top of every golfer’s list to visit.

Toowoomba is known to many as the Garden City, but few realise it boasts two championship golf courses. As Australia’s second largest inland city (second only to Canberra), it offers all the luxuries, but with small town charm, welcoming visitors and building a rapport that will keep people coming back, year after year. Located just 130km west of Brisbane, Toowoomba is a region of 140,000 residents, but with more than its fair share of quality hotels and fine dining restaurants and cafes.

CITY GOLF CLUB City Golf Club is on the outskirts of the Toowoomba CBD, but this course has an expansive and endless amount of rolling greens. Winner of the Best Golf Club in Queensland two years running, this 18hole course is sure to surprise and delight all who play there. Boasting lush kikuyu fairways and carpet-like bent grass greens, the City Golf Club’s incredible golf course has been the perfect host to the Queensland PGA Championship for the last five years.

Although some consider Toowoomba slightly off the beaten track, most are surprised by what the city has to offer. Golfers have the most to gain in this rural paradise. With its state-of-the-art golf courses, boasting the latest facilities, City Golf Club and Middle Ridge Golf Club showcases the best of golfing South East Queensland has to offer.

A professional golfer’s dream, City Golf Club has made a name for itself as one of the best Golf Courses in Australia. Right up to its challenging 18th finishing hole, boasting sweeping city views, it is the variety and changes in elevation that make the layout of the course so appealing.

With Toowoomba’s slightly cooler climate, golfers come from across Australia just for its lush grass. Whilst the humid climate in the rest of the state dictates the use of Bermuda grasses, both Toowoomba’s golf courses have bent grass greens. This change in the grass will not only ensure a better experience, but increases the consistency of the roll of your putt on the greens.

From golf enthusiasts to professionals, the City Golf Club has something to offer everyone, even the non-golfers. Attached to the lush golfing greens is the 2014 Winner of Best Club in the Darling Downs, with a wide selection of restaurants and cafes, gaming facilities and entertainment. City Golf Motel sits on the edge of the 40 hectare golfing grounds as well, offering stunning views and luxurious

The picturesque Toowoomba Golf Club at Middle Ridge is a golfer’s dream and not only is it the second oldest golf club in Queensland, it is also one of Queensland’s and Australia’s premier inland golf courses. The course features a challenging par-72 (5953 metres), 18-hole layout that has hosted numerous major championships and international golfing visitors. Rolling tree-lined kikuyu fairways and superbly manicured Penncross Bent greens provide the ultimate in course presentation and the well-appointed clubhouse features a deck overlooking the magnificent course and offers a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. After a round of golf you will be able to watch the sun set over the 18th green while enjoying a cold beverage. On-site parking allows easy access to the clubhouse and the course. There are few golf clubs in Queensland

that can boast 118 years of history and at the same time state that the great Gene Sarazen had also played the course during his trip to Australia in the 1930’s. Australia’s own former world number one, Greg Norman also has played Toowoomba Golf Club on many occasions during his early career and stated that “the course was a testing and formidable challenge for golfers of all levels”. In fact, it has been widely stated that “Middle Ridge” is one of the finest inland courses in Australia.

Other notable players that have played the challenging Middle Ridge layout include Gary Player, Norman Von Nida, Joe Kirkwood, Walter Hagan, Bobby Locke, Bruce Crampton and “Babe” Didrichson. A club steeped in history such as Toowoomba Golf Club also brings with it a legacy to the game of golf itself. Pioneers of the game created and nurtured some of the states great interclub challenges involving amongst other things the formation of reciprocity between 35 clubs throughout Queensland alone. Eleven of those 35 hold full reciprocal rights. Other reciprocal clubs outside Queensland include nine in NSW, one in each of the territories (ACT, NT) and one in each of the other Australian states plus one club in each country of New Zealand, Vanuatu, England and France. Pacific Harbour Golf and Country Club Engraved into the mind of a golfing traveller is the hope he might stumble upon an island paradise. A golfer seeking such a place should consider Pacific Harbour Golf and Country Club on Bribie Island, which is a 50-minute drive north of Brisbane and 30 minutes from the Sunshine Coast. The golf is far better than any traveller has a right to expect and golfers can playand-stay with The Golfer’s Lodge virtually on the club’s doorstep. The Ross Watson-designed island linksstyle championship course is impressive as it merges island life, water and golf.

Watson describes the course as “risk and reward”, which works well for championship, resort and club golf. The bunkering at Pacific Harbour Golf and Country Club is a standout feature. The short holes (par-3s) are exceptional with the 17th having the longest bunker in the Southern Hemisphere. Water can be seen at every turn with reflective lakes, the ocean in the background and even the clubhouse is “floating” over a lake and aquatic driving range. The once lifeless stretch of land allowed Watson the rare opportunity to create a golf course in the spirit of golf’s Scottish heritage of seaside, links-style courses. Beach bunkers merge with lake edges with natural grasses, reed and sedges. The 250-metre aquatic driving range, putting green and practice pitching area are located adjacent to the 18th fairway. When Watson designed the golf course, he said it would be “challenging, memorable and visually attractive” and he’s right. SOUTH WEST ROCKS

Welcoming... ALL SOCIAL GOLFING GROUPS

The South West Rocks Country Club boasts a picturesque 18-hole golf course worthy of any player, no matter the skill level. Nestled amongst the National Forests and beautiful beaches of the idyllic seaside getaway, it’s a truly beautiful course to play. A well designed and interesting layout, the course winds its way around tree lined fairways with the occasional kangaroo to be seen. Most holes are straight forward, however accuracy of the tee is required as the tree lines are very dense, making an escape to the green very difficult. The course is of moderate length; however there will be some wedges into greens if you are accurate off the tee. There is also a good variety of holes on offer for example our 15th (Fred’s Hole) a 383m par 4 with a water carry for your second or third depending on your drive. The greens are in fantastic shape all year round and the fairways are immaculate. With the club house located on the course, it’s the perfect venue to relax after your round for a bite to eat and a cool drink.

For golfers keen to perfect their game after dark, they can take advantage of Noosa’s only floodlit driving range open until 9pm Wednesday to Saturday. Moss Vale (Dormie House) Moss Vale golf course is regarded as one of the prettiest and challenging courses in country NSW and while you are only 90 minutes’ drive from the Sydney CBD, you will feel like you’re a world away in the relaxed and peaceful Southern Highlands.

The 18-Hole Championship Golf Course is a par-71, 5805m (Mens tees), and Par -73, 5300m (women’s tees). A number of twists and turns, creek crossings and deceptive greens, make the course a true test. The creek which runs through the course has to be crossed 12 times during the round. From the clubhouse, the Moss

Vale layout appears hilly, but after the opening 5 holes, it levels out and heads into the quiet countryside. Moss Vale Golf Club was founded in 1902 and designed in its current location and layout by Carnegie Clark. The current course record is 66. The environment is also the perfect location to work on all aspects of your golf game at the club’s two-day golf school, run by AAA-rated Australian PGA professional Robert Kennedy. There is also accommodation on-site at Dormie House. Kalgoorlie Golf Course Kalgoorlie Golf Course is an absolute gem, and may very well be one of the most “Australian” courses you will ever play. Designed by Graham Marsh, and owned by the city of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, this 18-hole par-72 championship course features an extremely playable layout, set in one of the most magnificent settings in the country.

Kalgoorlie Golf Course With six different tee boxes, Kalgoorlie is playable for any–and I mean ANY–skill level. Played from the black tees, the course measures a staggering 6768m, making it one of the longest courses in Australia. The “public” tees are a more manageable 5933m, while other tees are available for members, ladies and even juniors. Most of the holes are quite straight and wide, meaning that you’ll be relatively safe to hit driver throughout the day. But that doesn’t mean the holes are easy; on the contrary, they are anything but. A few of the doglegs – notably the par-4 12th – will require careful club selection and course management if you want any hope of par. The same can be said for holes like the par-5 9th, which features a

massive (yet narrow), three-tiered green that slopes from front to back (i.e. AWAY from you), and is guarded by a deep pot bunker on the front-right. If the pin is cut on the first/front tier, prepare for an automatic 3-putt. The par-3s at Kalgoorlie are glorious, especially the 218m 8th. With a slightly raised green, strategic bunkers and plenty of danger on each side, it’s the type of hole that can destroy a scorecard. Especially if the wind is in your face. Same with the 202m 17th, which features its own selection of nightmarish bunkers. The par-5s are equally strong. All four of them are solid three-shotters, including the monstrous 15th. Nicknamed the “Golden Mile”, this 569m beauty features a blind second shot, a massive ravine

Rather, it has sought to preserve the brilliant natural contours of the landscape that shape the holes amid the sand dunes. This is one of the most alluring features of the course. Relatively new to the course is a top class short game practice facility. It features various angles of greens, aprons and bunkers, replicating the natural contours found on the course. It’s the perfect place to warm up, practice or take a short game lesson. Bordering the practice facility is the redeveloped Par-3 course and resurfaced tennis courts. The clubhouse has also seen significant improvement.

Barwon Heads Golf Club along the right, bunkers at every turn and a very treacherous green. A par here feels like a birdie. Of course, the main feature of Kalgoorlie GC is the red earth surrounding the course. It not only “frames” the course in a stunning visual display, but it also provides a notorious hazard for wayward shots. Playing off the red earth is akin to a soft clay, and requires plenty of practice to master (I had plenty of practice during the round!). The same can be said for the various orange-coloured “waste bunkers” throughout the course: pretty, but deadly. The sparse surrounds beyond the rough means you’ll likely find your wayward shots. But it’s a hollow victory, as the numerous prickly desert shrubs and bushes provide their own layer of peril; it is nigh impossible to play out of many of them. Also, much of the course is slightly “raised” off the ground – so if

your ball rolls just off the fairway onto the red earth, you can find yourself wedged against a raised grass “lip”, which requires a tricky wedge shot to get back onto the fairway.

With a course of this calibre on offer, Kalgoorlie is a fantastic destination for a quick golfing holiday, corporate event or even an annual Social Golf Weekend, as it offers world-class golf, comfortable accommodation, and a unique “frontier town” nightlife scene. After golf, enjoy a tasty dinner or grab a few beers and mingle with the locals at one of the historic pubs, or kick back in your room at one of the many local hotels and dream about the next day’s round at Kalgoorlie GC.

Barwon Heads Golf Club

All in all, Kalgoorlie Golf Course is an amazing facility with a setting that is second to none. We are confident that this course will one day find itself listed among Australia’s top rated courses.

Visitors to Barwon Heads will be familiar with the Barwon Heads Golf Club and its iconic clubhouse. Many, however, will be unaware of the accommodation provided within. In fact, the golf club has provided accommodation since the clubhouse was opened in 1924. Back then it was described as Australia’s first country club on the nation’s first links course and the prestigious, membersonly clubhouse opened to a great deal of fanfare. This was despite the fact the original twenty bedrooms shared two bathrooms and only four showers. However, as a result of renovations and improvements made over the years, the Heritage Victoria listed clubhouse now has 19 rooms, all with their own ensuite. After a recent refurbishment all rooms are modern with elegant furnishings. It is not only members who will benefit from the refurbishment. Non-members

The Links Kennedy Bay Nestled near the seaside town of Rockingham, The Links Kennedy Bay is a superb facility set amongst rolling sand

The Links Kennedy Bay dunes. 1991 British Open champion Ian Baker-Finch collaborated with architects Michael Coate and Roger Mackay to create an exciting and difficult linksstyle course among the area’s natural bushland. The terrain at Kennedy Bay makes for some magnificent scenery, with the occasional glimpses of the ocean in the distance. The area is very reminiscent of Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, while the gentle (or sometimes not-so-gentle) sea breezes add to the allure. What really grabs most golfers about the course are the extremely deep and narrow fairway pot bunkers. There is only one word to describe these nightmarish creatures: penal. These are the way bunkers were MEANT to be. In most cases, if you find a fairway bunker at Kennedy Bay, your only option is to ‘take your medicine’ with a 9-iron or wedge. Automatically add 1 stroke to your score if you hit into one of these little buggers (oh, and they are strategically

placed everywhere that golf balls tend to congregate.) Each hole on the course is given a name suited to the specifics of the hole itself, like “Thread the needle”, “Sunrise”, “Temptation” and the bluntly named “Hell”, which is an apt name for the 520-metre, par-5 fourth that features a replica of the infamous Hell’s Bunker at the 14th hole of the Old Course, St Andrews. There’s even one named “The Doctor”, which pays tribute to “The Fremantle Doctor”, the locals’ term for the cooling afternoon sea breeze which occurs during summer months. The greens are all very challenging, with multiple slopes and swales. They are magnificent surfaces, and they are extremely slick and true. Overall, it’s a great course to add to your must-play list. South West Rocks Country Club

South West Rocks Country Club The South West Rocks Country Club boasts a picturesque 18-hole golf course worthy of any player, no matter the skill level. Nestled amongst the National Forests and beautiful beaches of the idyllic seaside getaway, it’s a beautiful course to play. A well-designed and interesting layout, the course winds its way around tree-lined fairways with the occasional kangaroo to be seen. Most holes are straightforward with a few bent for the tricky shots. As such, accuracy off the tee is required as the tree lines are very dense, making an escape to the green very difficult. The course is of moderate length;

however there will be some wedges into greens if you are accurate off the tee. There is also a good variety of holes on offer for example, the 15th (Fred’s Hole) a 383m par 4 with a water carry for your second or third depending on your drive. The greens are in fantastic shape all year round and the fairways are immaculate. The course also plays host to a Pro-Am Tournament, among others, in May of each year. With the clubhouse located adjacent to the course, it’s the perfect venue to relax after your round for a bite to eat and a cool drink. It boasts full TAB and Keno facilities as well as an Asian Style buffet, Café, Seasons Restaurant and great bar and lounge to

relax and wind down in after a hit. About South West Rocks South West Rocks is an idyllic seaside destination located under five hours north of Sydney and is accessible to Port Macquarie airport by a short 45-minute drive. It’s the perfect destination for a relaxing golf weekend or mid-week trip away for your social golf group or friends to enjoy. The Rocks, as it’s affectionately known, lies at the mouth of the Macleay River, just a half-hour drive from Kempsey. From the natural beauty of the beaches, headlands and bush to the charm of the Smoky Cape Lighthouse and Trial Bay Gaol, there is a plethora of opportunities for an extra brilliant and memorable stay.

The ideal weekend getaway or retreat by the beach for the times you’re not on the fairways, South West Rocks has a warm temperate climate which is perfect for year-round golfing and a plethora other recreational sports, such as swimming, hiking and surfing. With a great choice of accommodation options to choose from to suit any budget, your social golfing group will be well catered for. A quick guide to playing golf in

Japan For years, Japan was branded as an expensive and hard-to-navigate place to play golf. Green fees started at $200 and visitors were extremely rare, especially on a golf course. Times have changed. These days Japan is welcoming record numbers of foreign visitors and becoming steadily more international. Here are a few tips for playing golf in this wonderful destination. (And for more about golf in Japan, see our travel section on our website.)

Niseko Tokyu Hanazono Golf Course 18th hole

John Barton As so often with Japan, everything looks normal on the surface but when playing golf the following will help you adjust to the local conditions! Here is a simple guide to understanding and getting the most out of your golf trip to Japan. 1. Arriving at the course. Most golf courses in Japan have a lot of staff to help through your day at the course. When arriving, you should drive up to the front of the clubhouse. Someone will appear and take the golf clubs out of your car and take them to the appropriate golf cart. An additional tip here is to make sure that you keep your shoes and any change of clothes separately so that you don’t have to hunt around for your bag once inside. 2. Put a label with your name on your bag. Japanese golf courses like to have your

name on the bag as a reference point. Usually, the course will request the names of all the players in a group and then will group people together as you decide. 3. Four-Balls. Most courses like you to book a four-ball and will sometimes charge a supplement if you cannot make up a four. This practise is waning of late with two-ball groups being allowed more readily, still, courses frown on the single player in general. 4. Yellow tees. On any hole where there is a possibility of going OOB, yellow tees are positioned down the fairway. These tees are known as ‘playing four’. When you go OOB you don’t play a provisional ball, you just drive up to the yellow tee and play from there. Yes, it is quite a lenient way of playing but does speed up play. Groups playing together should decide before the round

whether it is permissible to use the ‘playing four’ tees. Purists don’t tend to like them! 5. Through Play. Outside of Hokkaido, it is customary to play 9 holes, stop for lunch, and then play the remaining 9 holes. Luckily, in Hokkaido ‘through play’ is standard. 6. The International Language of Golf. A lot of the language used for golf in Japan is derived from English. For example: bunker, club, ‘nice shot!’, tee, hole, fairway, rough, green, ball are pretty much pronounced the same as English. Even when you are playing with a Japanese person you can communicate with them using the international golf language. 7. Bath after the round. One of the absolute joys of playing golf

in Japan is the bath after the round. You can relax those tired muscles and relive the ups and downs of the round. This is a must while you are on your golf holiday in Japan. 8. After Golf in the Evening. Most golf courses close at dusk. They usually do not operate bars or restaurants after this time, though it’s never too far to find a karaoke bar or restaurant to enjoy the rest of the evening. tournament divisions based on age and handicap. Playing with golfers your own age and standard is one of the World Masters popular traditions. All golfers play four rounds of stableford competition while ‘A’ graders also compete for the best gross. Go Golfing’s tournament director Peter McCarthy told Inside Golf that a growing band of sponsors had provided the backing for his team to put together

the best golf and entertainment program ever offered to World Masters participants and partners. “Ladbrokes are the title sponsor this year while Srixon and Mercure Resort have joined Virgin Australia, Panasonic, Thrifty, Golf World and Oasis Shopping Centre as major supporters.” According to player surveys, the number one reason for participating is the Gold Coast courses. With this in mind Go Golfing targeted the Gold Coast’s top four resort courses for the tournament. “Securing board approval for the private, members-only, The Pines at Sanctuary Cove to host the World Masters for the first time is just fantastic. The Pines 15th would never have had the opportunity to play The Pines. Norman, Nicklaus, Palmer and Player competed for riches in Skins tournaments at The Pines and this is where Adam Scott honed his skills and still calls home.” Links Hope Island, host of the Johnnie Walker Classic won by Ernie Els, the Greg Norman designed Glades and the newly re-designed RACV Royal Pines Resort, home to the PGA Championship and Ladies Masters combine to host the four round World Masters in 2015. Participants also enjoy a range of event services normally reserved for the top professionals. Players are transferred in private coaches to and from the courses each day. There’s a valet service that takes your golf clubs from course to course and clubs are on your allocated cart before you arrive. Free range balls, golf lessons, test driving the latest release golf equipment all add to the golfing experience.

The World Masters also has a new home. Mercure Gold Coast Resort, surrounded by Palm Meadows and Lakelands courses, has undergone a $30 million makeover to the rooms, restaurants and bars. Rooms are $30 a night cheaper than last year and free upgrades, free wi-fi and 15% discount throughout the Resort. While golf is a major drawcard, there are quality social and entertainment events included every night. Opening night will be an Aussie BBQ and seafood smorgasbord under the stars with fireworks and big name comedy acts. A singles get-together prior to the welcome dinner has been added this year. Poolside at Mercure Resort will be home to the 19th Hole. Sporting a different theme each night—beach party, golf trivia, country & western—there will be finger food, pub priced drinks, live entertainment, golf presentations and big screen replays of the golfing action. Craft beer and wine tastings are a new addition

Bonus $100 cabin credit if you book between 1 to 7 May.

Festivities culminate with a gala presentation dinner. More than $100,000 in prizes are awarded. The World Masters has given away $1.6 million in prizes. Eight new cars, trips to the US Masters and golfing holidays to the world’s best golf resorts have been given away as lucky draw prizes. Sydney’s Jerome Ballard has attended the last 14 World Masters tournaments and has registered again for 2015. “It’s the highlight of my golfing year. Regardless of my form going in, I never pay well at the Masters, but I really enjoy the courses. I have never played The Pines at Sanctuary Cove, so I am looking forward to that. The whole week runs like clockwork and Go Golfing know how to spoil us golfers. Its great value and loads of fun.” The tournament package is $899 for players registering before 15 July. The

package includes four rounds with carts, welcome and presentation dinners, 19th Hole, tournament shirt, $100,000 in prizes and more. Registering before 15 July will also earn you a Srixon golf pack valued at $60.
