Ocean Dunes King Island opening in October O
cean Dunes King Island will open 12 of its holes for play on October 30, coinciding with the opening of nearby Cape Wickham. The front nine, 10th, 17th and 18th holes at Ocean Dunes will be played at a reduced fee, giving local, interstate and international golfers the option of playing the 12-hole loop or just the front nine. Ocean Dunes director and course architect Graeme Grant says the October unveiling will give golfers a world-class offering on King Island across two courses. “Visitors will have the chance to get a real taste for what King Island has to offer and I’m sure they’ll realise that this location is world-class and will only improve once the courses mature and come into their own,” Grant says. “Ocean Dunes is just five minutes from King Island Airport, Cape Wickham is just half an hour away by car and with Barnbougle’s Dunes and Lost Farm courses, Tasmania is shaping as one of the truly great golf destinations in the world.” While Ocean Dunes’ opening stretch of holes offers breathtaking coastal golf, Grant is sure the back nine, especially the par-three 10th, will offer players a quintessential links experience. The 10th hole - 203 metres long from the
Ocean Dunes back tee and only 140 metres from the front markers - is tucked beside a small cove and asks for a water carry from the championship tee to a green perched above coastal rocks. Running alongside the 10th green is a kelp track, which borders the entire coastline of Ocean Dunes and it’s not uncommon to spot someone dragging kelp off the beach onto a trailer on up to six of the course’s holes. “There’s a kelp industry down here that’s worth $2 million annually to King Island,” Grant says. “Kelpers park on the road and haul the kelp onto their trailers. People will have to give way to the kelpers or the kelpers will have to give way to the golfers at times and there will be an interaction. It’s a throwback to the old links courses that were never owned by anybody, like the Old Course at St Andrews, where people who don’t play are free to walk across the course.” Ocean Dunes also offers an array of local
fauna including wallabies, which are a regular sighting on most holes. “We’ve got wallabies all over the golf course, we’ve got peacocks, pheasants and sea eagles. We’ve got an array of wildlife that will surprise people when they come down here,” Grant predicts. Grant - who has lived in King Island’s main township of Currie for two years while building Ocean Dunes - says the entire 18-hole course remains on track to open by the end of January. The front nine and 18th hole have already been playable for three months. “At the moment, we’re cutting greens once a week, whereas once we’re open, everything will be much firmer, the ball will run a bit further, the grass will be shorter and the greens will be a bit faster. I want them fast enough to highlight the slopes so golfers can use the slopes but not so fast that the ball is blown about by the wind. There’s an important balance to strike.” •

Nelson Bay Golf Club Nelson Bay Golf Club Locke considered some of the holes the finest he had ever played. And one of the game leading golf course architects, Tom Doak, was so impressed with the fifth (368m), sixth (367m) and seventh (148m) holes he even documented them in his book Confidential Guide to Golf Courses.
Players have to thread their tee shot through a chute of tall trees and then avoid bunkers short right and long left. If you do miss the green, you’ll have your work cut out making par. Alex Mercer, Steve Elkington’s coach, too, is a big fan of the golf course.
Doak raved about the course and described it as a “hidden gem”.
When he played there, he described it as one of the few great natural layouts left – anywhere.
He rated the par-3 seventh hole as one of the best 18 holes in his “rest of the world” ratings outside the United States and the British Isles.
The perfectly presented championship golf course is carved out of sclerophyll forest on undulating sand dunes with each hole having its own individual
character. The rolling couch fairways are bordered by majestic eucalyptus and angophoras towering out of white sandy soil creating a feeling of isolation when playing each hole. The club’s first greenkeeper Fred Popplewell, winner of the Australian Open in 1925 and 1928, built the first nine holes in 1915. Eric Apperly then designed 18 holes, keeping seven of Popplewell’s nine, with the full layout opened in 1937. The golf course certainly has stood the test of time and tends to play longer due
Ranked in the Top 50 Golf Courses in Australia for Under $50, Nelson Bay Golf Club is one of the Hunter Valley’s most popular courses. Host of 2014 ISPS Handa World and Australian Blind Championships, as well as the 2013 NSW Mid Amateur Championships, the 27-hole championship course is set among native trees with an abundance of wildlife like kangaroos, wallabies, koalas and native birds. Originally an 18-hole course, the facility proved so popular with tourists and locals alike that a further 9 holes were added in the adjoining bushland in 1998, resulting in a spectacular facility that features some truly magnificent holes.

One of the standout holes would surely be the 490-metre par-5 12th, a tight, bushland-bordered bender that makes its way up a long hill. Accuracy is key here, as the elevated green is hidden until your third shot, so pick your landing zones carefully. The clubhouse at Nelson Bay is relatively new, and boasts spectacular views and an al fresco dining area – perfect for a relaxing end to a fun day on the course. Nelson Bay Golf Club are also able to host meetings, seminars & Business Breakfasts ranging in size from 10 to 150 participants. Their function team can also accommodate parties, weddings or gatherings of various sizes. Function guests are also able to use the facility’s open balconies, which feature fantastic views over the course including the chance to view kangaroos at certain times throughout the day. Horizons Golf Resort
Horizons Golf Resort is back, and better than ever, having found a new owner following the purchase by two Sydney
est 1905
Horizons Golf Resort businessmen. Horizons was left in limbo following an aborted sale in 2011 and has since been operated under license by a committed group of members who have restored the golf course to its former pristine condition. The new management is building on these improvements to return Horizons to its former reputation as one of the top golf courses in Australia and the jewel in the crown of golf courses in the Hunter region. The course was opened in 1992, having been designed by Graham Marsh and Ross Watson and built on a site that was originally wetlands. The scenic layout resulted from extensive native revegetation and care was taken to
preserve wetland areas as a sanctuary for native birds and animals. The 68 hectare course features 7.5 kms of cart paths, 96 bunkers, the tranquil wetlands, the native fauna and flora and the sense of playing golf on a location that seems like a million miles from care. It became known for its slick greens, hazardous waterways and undulating fairways and has been described as a world-class championship course of domestic and international tournament standard. It has attracted some of the best players in the world having hosted the 2002 and 2003 ALPG Players Championship, the 2002 Men’s NSW Open and the 2004 Men’s ANZ Championship. Visitors to Horizons Golf Resort will

Stonebridge Golf Club
Belmont Golf Club
Belmont Golf Club
A former Belmont Golf Club president, Bernard S. Kemp, once described the club as a happy and welcoming golf club. He also said nature had provided the club with many assets including a great climate, an easy-walking links course and an almost unlimited water supply for growth. This year the popular club, located on the southern fringe of Newcastle, celebrates its 63rd anniversary and in that time has grown from swampy scrub to an internationally-recognised championship course. The club is home of the world-ranked Lake Macquarie Amateur Championship, an annual amateur tournament internationally recognised by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews. The club also hosts The Lake Macquarie
International Championship, which has been attracting the cream of the amateur crop since 1958. Major winners like Mark O’Meara, Steve Elkington and Vijay Singh have graced the fairways. Other big names that have walked in their footsteps include Colin Montgomerie, Luke Donald, Paul Casey, Jack Newton, Rodger Davis, Peter O’Malley, Robert Allenby, Geoff Ogilvy, Stuart Appleby and others with Jason Day holding the joint course record of 63. One of the reasons the world’s best golfers (men and women) keep turning up to play Belmont is because the course is well-regarded. Constructed on pure sand, Belmont is the best “all weather” course in the area. Over the years, the club has continued to make improvements to the golf course
and in the future will look to establish new holes on the northern end of the course along the beach. Belmont has four challenging par-3s including the 155m fifth which was re-designed by Jack Newton. With deep bunkers short right and long left, it requires good club selection to an elevated green. Because of its shape, the hole offers some challenging pin positions. The par-5 ninth is a testing hole of 482m off the white tees and requires a courageous tee shot because there’s water along the entire left side. The second shot doesn’t get any easier with hazards left and trees right and the green, which has a hump in the middle, is protected by two bunkers right.
The 15th hole is a 401m par-4 and is the former signature hole. Running parallel with the Pacific Ocean, it demands a nearperfect tee shot because there’s danger in the form of bush on the left and right. The fast green is protected by two bunkers left and requires care to study the subtle slopes. The par-5 16th hole has had a new green constructed, lengthening the hole from 432m to 500m off the white tees. There are strategically-placed fairway bunkers left and right and the third shot is to an elevated green (30 metres from the Pacific Ocean), with subtle slopes protected by bunkers left and right. The new “signature hole.” Membership is open in all categories, with no joining fees. Special rates for

to great food, friendly staff, a relaxed atmosphere and affordable prices.
The club’s signature hole is the 15th, a long uphill 373 metre par-4 with a slight dogleg left. The tee shot must be right of centre as anything going left will make it impossible to reach the green in two. The second shot is to a wide but narrow green and is guarded on the right with a deep bunker. Add one to two clubs for your second shot, being long is better than being short!
The club’s function venue is one of Newcastle’s best locations with views over the course and to the city - weddings, parties, conferences, seminars, corporate events and fundraising dinners can all be individually designed to suit your needs. The academy officially opened with the commencement of a 10-week junior golf program led by Australian Patrick Kelly, the course’s head professional and a former winner at the highest level of US collegiate golf.
“It’s my dream team,” said Ben Styles, The Bluffs’ general manager. “In Robert, Patrick and Luke, we’ve got the makings of something very special here. With these guys leading the way, I firmly believe The Bluffs is poised to make the next generation of Vietnamese golfers a force to be reckoned with.”

“The lab, as we call it, really allows us to illustrate the correct positions and angles a golfer needs to understand to form a dependable swing,” said Kelly. “If you’ve got that understanding, you’re on your way, because many of the same principles apply to other facets of the game, such as chipping and putting.”
“No one knows how good they can be at something unless they get the opportunity,” said Styles. “We fully support junior golf. We want youngsters to come and try golf, like we all got to when we were young.”

Golfers conquer Nullarbor Links T
HE Chasing the Sun Nullarbor Links golf tournament finished a while ago, but they are still talking about it.
In fact, the 73 travellers (51 of those playing in the tournament) had so much fun they will dine out on Nullarbor Links yarns for a long time to come after conquering the world’s longest “golf course” stretching 1365 kilometres from Ceduna in South Australia to Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. The Chasing the Sun tournament, played over 18 holes at 15 different courses, took a week to play. Players first teed it up at Ceduna, a small town in the West Coast region of South Australia, and putted out at the Graham Marsh-designed Kalgoorlie Golf Course in Western Australia. Golf course manager Alf Caputo said the golf and festival of activities had established itself as “a brilliant Australian golfing experience”. “From the very first sip of champagne to toast the sunrise at Ceduna to the champagne toast to the setting sun in Kalgoorlie, this was a memorable journey,” he said. Aside from the golf, the adventurers enjoyed the festival of activities taking in Australia’s famous oyster beds in Ceduna, the wheat and sheep farming districts of Penong, Nundroo and the beautiful waters of Fowlers Bay. “Those on the trip ventured past whales and the beautiful coastline at Nullarbor to arrive at the beaches of Eucla to meet the pirate and claim their treasure,” Caputo said. “Clutching their gold, the participants moved on to the remains of Skylab at Balladonia and the working sheep station at Fraser Range. “The Indigenous art and dance of the Ngadju people in Norseman will feature strongly in their memories.
“From there, they journeyed on to nickel mining and land sailing at Kambalda and finally to Australia’s gold capital – Kalgoorlie. “It was amazing,” Alf said. “It was the most successful, best organised, best attended and the most fun than any other in the past six years. “We have arrived as a truly national and international event.” Many on the trip agreed including Barry Degenhardt from Mt Coolum Golf Club in Queensland. “We had the most fantastic trip,” said Barry, who was joined on the trip by 18 fellow club members. “We have done a lot of things in our lifetime, but this trip is right up there with the best. “What an adventure – most probably the rarest event on earth. “Once a year, just 50 people have the absolute pleasure of playing in this event. There are many stories to tell.” Many echoed Barry’s sentiments including the men’s winner Ross Plummer of NSW and the women’s champion Raalee Oates of Queensland.
Chasing the Sun competitors and friends at Border Village on the WA/SA border. Barry had nothing but high praise for the tournament and festival organisers.
“What an amazing tournament,” Raalee said. “We made a lifetime of memories and friendships. There was laughter, tears and many stories told. “It’s a trip we will hold close to our hearts.” Vietnam’s Ha Viet Quan said Kalgoorlie Golf Course was a definite highlight. “It’s world-class and perhaps the ritziest course you’ll find around WA,” he said. “With its lush, green grass contrasting starkly with the red dirt of the mining fields, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it in the list of the world’s very top desert golf courses soon. A bonus was its delicious meals and friendly staff.”
“The event is run expertly and is well supported,” he said. “Nothing is too much effort for the organisers. “The entertainment was great and the evening functions wonderful … if one could stay awake for them. “The trip across the Nullarbor is spectacular – the distances, roadhouses, scenery and realisation of the expanse of this nation. “Organiser Alf Caputo is a great bloke. It is a rare person that can bring together so many people all of whom had a trip of a lifetime.” FOOTNOTE: The group also raised money for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Murray Magic: Tocumwal and
Sporties Cobram Barooga Golf Clubs
During a recent tour of the mighty Murray River Region, Inside Golf had the pleasure to sample some of the most exciting and playable courses the area has to offer. This month, we feature two courses within 20 minutes of each other, providing a great opportunity for a golf weekend away or group social event.
O
ffering some of the most enjoyable golf in country Australia, Tocumwal Golf Club features two 18-hole championship golf courses—the Presidents and the Captains courses. A regular stop on the Inside Golf tour, the golf club offers the highest level of service and quality in all aspects of the game, from course conditioning to practice facilities and the clubhouse amenities. The course is held in such high regard that it plays host to the CPM Southern PGA Trainee Championship, challenging some of Australia’s most talented up-andcoming golfers.
With two established courses ranked in the 2013 Top 100 Public Access Courses in Australia, Tocumwal offers an experience not to be missed. The Presidents Course, the older of the two, is heavily tree-lined with deeper bunkering while the Captains Course is lightly timbered, but more water comes into play. The playing surfaces on both courses feature superb couch grass fairways and slick, bent grass greens that are the envy of many. The easywalking fairways are slightly undulating and both courses have some very pretty and challenging golf holes amidst an abundance of magnificent Australian flora and fauna.
The clubhouse features all of the dining and leisure facilities that you expect of a modern, friendly club. Choose to dine-in or alfresco on the balcony, while enjoying the service of the attentive staff. With floor to ceiling windows, the restaurant offers panoramic views over the golf course. There are also some outstanding golf packages on offer. Enjoy the convenience of one of the 70 rooms spilling onto the golf course, within a stroll of the clubhouse, or the suite of accommodation options nearby that make Tocumwal the ideal location for your next golf holiday or as a central point to explore the Murray River region.

A quick 20 minutes from Tocumwal is Sporties Cobram Barooga Golf Club. With two celebrated courses set in beautiful surrounds, the club offers the best of old and new for serious and novice golfers. The original 18-hole “Old” course, was constructed in 1925 and is the more famous of the two. At 6186m, its clever design and narrow tree-lined fairways provide a good test of skill for any player. The course, with many classic holes, is framed by majestic red gums and pines. Time hasn’t left this old favourite behind though, because the newly constructed greens are fast and true, with clever bunkering catching wayward shots hit into the greens. The new West Course offers wider fairways, larger greens and additional slopes that provide natural framing for tee shots. Slightly longer than the original course at 6287m, the 18-hole layout has gained a strong reputation as the perfect blend of resort and modern links style. With its Murray River location, an abundance of local flora and fauna plus great weather, Sporties Cobram Barooga
Golf Club is a ‘must do’ for those who’d like to play on both a traditional and a more contemporary course. Tee times are available seven days a week, with services including golf carts, pro shop and equipment hire The newly renovated Clubhouse has been cleverly designed, with a fabulous choice of areas indoors and outdoors in the fresh air for lunch, a post-game drink and dinner. There’s a new Lounge Bar with spacious decks, comfortable contemporary furniture, a laid back country atmosphere and almost endless views over the golf courses.
The 19th hole Club Café is a busy spot every day, with light snacks, lunch specials and a delicious range of cakes. The Bistro serves dinner Wednesday to Saturday evenings, with sharing and grazing plates, grills and more. Seniors meals are available too. Accommodation at the Club is another highlight. Eighteen new, luxurious and fully-equipped units have been opened here, with ground floor units literally opening out on to the golf course, and upstairs units providing beautiful views from generous balconies. This club accommodation is stylish and
sophisticated, with beautiful bathrooms, supremely comfortable beds, free wifi, flat screen TV with cable channels in the large living area and a kitchenette in some units. There’s an excellent health and fitness centre with a heated 25 metre pool, sauna, spa and aerobics room. Outdoors are two state-of-the-art synthetic greens for lawn bowls and a relaxing landscaped garden area with BBQ. Festivities will culminate with a gala presentation dinner where more than $110,000 in golf and lucky draw prizes are presented. Tournament director Go Golfing Managing Director, Peter McCarthy, reveals what has made this tournament so successful and what is in store for golfers and their partners this year. “Our tournaments are about golf and fun. A golf tournament is a golf tournament. Everyone knows what to expect there, and we deliver. But it is the fun we deliver in our tournaments that blows people away.”
“Our participants love the games, the social gatherings and the entertainment we put together for them. It is that memory that stays with them for years to come. It is about the friendships they’ve made and the laughs they’ve shared. And this is what Go Golfing is about and this is why so many of our participants come back again and again.” “And this year is going to be bigger than ever. It is our 20th anniversary and we want to use this milestone as a way to thank our faithful clients and sponsors, past and present, who have made this tournament such a success and wonderful experience.”
The support of new major sponsor Ladbrokes has paved the way for significant upgrades to the four host courses. For the first time ever, the private, members-only The Pines at Sanctuary Cove will be included in the four course rotation. The only Arnold Palmer signature golf course in Australia, The Pines is where Norman, Palmer and Nicklaus played the richest Skins tournaments. Sanctuary Cove is where Adam Scott honed his skills and still calls home and says “When I think of great golf in Australia, I think of The Pines Sanctuary Cove, a true test of the game.” Just short of 6,700 metres, the golf course meanders through 101 hectares of established pine forest and six large man-made lakes. Several risk and reward holes and striking corridor approaches to several holes are signature design
features. There’s an abundance of wildlife with a gallery of kangaroos looking on. The Pines Sanctuary Cove joins Links Hope Island, The Glades and RACV Royal Pines to host this year’s tournament. Playing in his sixteenth consecutive World Masters, Jerome Ballard from Sydney’s Twin Creeks is keen to be challenged on the Gold Coast’s top four courses. “The reviews of The Pines at Sanctuary Cove from the likes of Adam Scott has me excited to be playing there for the very first time. Links Hope Island is a great layout and immaculately conditioned. I always enjoy the bent greens at The Glades and I am keen to have a crack at the re-vamped Royal Pines which hosts the Australian PGA and Ladies Masters.” The Ladbrokes World Masters Golf Championship is open to all male and female golfers aged 35 plus with an
official golf handicap. Competition is in 15 divisions based on age and handicap and playing with golfers your own age and standard is among the tournament’s popular traditions. All golfers compete in the four-round stableford event with ‘A’ grade golfers also eligible for the best gross. The World Masters always has outstanding prizes for the golf competition and the final night lucky draws are keenly anticipated. Eight cars,
a trip to the US Masters, golf tours to international desti-nations have all been given away. There’s $30,000 in lucky prizes guaranteed to be won this year. Special Offer: Quote Inside Golf on the entry form and receive a $100 discount off the tournament entry fee, a Srixon git pack valued at $70 and 5 bonus tickets in major prize draws.
