F
resh off its launch of ‘Air Adventure Golf Tours’ in July, long established air touring company Air Adventure is bracing for the opening of its new three-day package taking golfers to play 54 holes of world-class golf at Barnbougle Dunes, Lost Farm and Cape Wickham.
Air Adventure – established in 1977 – says Air Adventure Golf Tours is now accepting bookings from droves of golfers who want to be a part of its threeday trip flying passengers directly from Essendon Airport to Barnbougle Dunes and stunning King Island golf course
Cape Wickham, which opens in late October. “Our most popular trip to Tasmania is an overnight trip to Barnbougle, but since Cape Wickham has launched we are now getting a lot of bookings on our threeday flight,” said Air Adventure’s Managing Director John Dyer. “Golfers will fly down to Barnbougle, spend two nights there and play both courses before, on the third day, flying direct to King Island to play the brand new Cape Wickham before heading back to Melbourne in time for dinner.”
As Ocean Dunes on King Island prepares to open up to 12 of its holes in late October, Air Adventure is planning to give golfers a dream four-day package. “Once Ocean Dunes opens, we’ll most likely be offering a four-day trip including one night’s accommodation on King Island and golf at Ocean Dunes on the fourth day,” Dyer revealed. With numerous aircraft charter companies now offering prized golf trips to Tasmania, Air Adventure is positioning itself as a faster, more luxurious and well-priced alternative, which organises
The company’s $1.2 million Cessna Conquest II flies at an average speed of 560 kilometres per hour, and can get golfers from Essendon to Barnbougle in just 45 minutes, landing direct on the course’s private airfield. Excluding the need for the lengthy delays associated with flying out of major airports, Dyer estimates that golfers can save up to four hours of transit time in one day. “It can be as little as 90 minutes from take off to tee off at Barnbougle,” Dyer stated. “We’re partnered with Sharp Airlines so we’ve also got that added level of compliance and safety assurance. With our pressurised cabins, it’s also a much smoother ride and you’ll be able to get up above any bad weather.” Air Adventure Golf Tours can carry up to eight golfers per aircraft (two aircraft available) and supplies all passengers with pencil golf bags for transit and fullsize golf bags to use at each course they play. Air Adventure also offers a range of packages catering to non-golfers. It has more than 30 flight itineraries ranging from one day to two weeks. Passengers can fly Air Adventure throughout rural and outback Australia, remote islands including Lord Howe Island, Kangaroo Island in South Australia and the Torres Strait Islands and also charters air safaris in Africa. reat yourself to an unforgettable golfing experience at St Andrews Beach Golf Course, one of the premier ‘pay to play’ courses in Australia, and Victoria’s best public access course as recently named by Golf Australia Magazine. Designed by internationally-renowned architect Tom Doak (who was also responsible for the renowned Barnbougle Dunes and Cape Kidnappers golf courses), the course offers a brilliant mixture of short and long holes that always pose a different challenge regardless of how many times you play. When Doak himself suggests if he “could place any one of his designs on his door step, St Andrews Beach might be his first choice” golfers must all take notice. Incredible natural drainage ensures
pristine playing surfaces all year round and a huge fleet of motorised carts are available for hire. There is a licensed pro shop with heated al fresco deck available for refreshments, while there are also affordable green fees, with Senior, Group and Afternoon golf discounts available! Competitions are open to all golfers, with official handicap weekends and other peak days, plus monthly Doak Blue Tee Challenge on the second Saturday of each month (February – December). On-site, self-contained accommodation available. More information: 209 Sandy Rd, Fingal. Ph: (03) 5988 6000. www.standrewsbeachgolf.com.au
Just a short drive to the east side of the Peninsula is the lovely and picturesque Flinders Golf Club, an 18-hole seaside beauty built along an amazing stretch of land overlooking Bass Strait. Though it may seem a bit detached from the other well-known Mornington courses, in reality it’s only 15 minutes away from the Cape Schanck area, so it is well within reach for a social group weekend or casual round. The great Golf Architect Dr Alister Mackenzie was so impressed with the course during a visit in 1926 that he was quoted as saying that Flinders was “equalled by only one other natural course, which is in California.” (He was referring to Pebble Beach.) Flinders is arguably one of the more underrated courses on the Peninsula.
While it isn’t long by any stretch, it still has plenty of bite. A handful of the par-4’s are easily drivable, yet if you are even slightly off-line you can forget about par, as you’ll be contending with deep bunkers, tall trees and any number of ball-grabbing shrubs or hazards. The par-4 fourth, the club’s signature hole, is a short but spectacular hole named The Coffin. Originally a par3, it was redesigned into a par-4 by Mackenzie, who moved the green back and behind the “Purgatory Ravine”, thus transforming it into one of the most memorable holes on the Mornington Peninsula. In truth, all the holes on the course are special. Each with its own unique ocean view, character and challenge. But the real test at Flinders is on and

Now under the management of
Captivating
courses in Canberra Inside Golf shares some of our favourite layouts in the Nation’s capital
R
oyal Canberra, the face and benchmark of championship golf in the Nation’s capital since 1926, is undergoing an amazing facelift to ensure it will continue in that role for at least another 89 years. The Master Plan for the three-year renovation of the 27-hole layout—set in Westbourne Woods, a magnificent arboretum of established trees of significance—was endorsed by club members in 2013. The task of bringing it to fruition has been allocated to Melbourne golf course design firm Ogilvy Clayton Cocking Mead (OCCM) Pty Ltd. And, beginning next month, the first nine-hole stage of the only comprehensive reworking of architect Commander John Harris’ original course will be gradually brought into play over three months, setting a new gold standard for championship golf in Canberra. Club General Manager Andrew Casey, who is looking forward to an emerging new era in Royal Canberra’s distinguished history, says there will be many benefits flowing from the three-year Master Plan. “We are anticipating there will be a lot of renewed interest in playing Royal Canberra as the new holes are opened for play,” he said.
Royal Canberra
“It will be one of the few courses in Australia with pure bent grass greens, tees and fairways so it will be a fairly unique playing experience.” The impressive Master Plan’s completion (set down for 2017), simplistically speaking, addresses several main issues; improved drainage of the 50-year-old greens, consistent bunkers, fairway grass quality, course drainage and irrigation, tee reconstruction and tree management. A letter from the club’s Board of Directors, issued to members in 2013, set out that the Master Plan was “to prepare the club for the future and to protect the integrity of the new design of the course”. When granted its Royal status in 1933 by King George V, Royal Canberra Golf Club members were based at Acton, playing a challenging course on the banks of the Molonglo River in 1926. However when the 1960s Walter Burley Griffin plan for Canberra called for the damming of the Molonglo River to form a lake, the club’s Acton site was to be submerged, prompting the move to the present site. The club’s website proudly asserts “in the 53 years since that move, the Royal Canberra Golf Club has developed into Australia’s pre-eminent inland golf course. “The venue for a number of major
amateur and professional tournaments over the years, the Royal Canberra course regularly features in Australia’s top 50 courses, relying on its natural beauty, its marvellous variety of trees and challenging design to occupy a rating well above many newer, resort-style courses.” Casey says that the club will be doing a transitional opening where, as soon as newly-renovated holes are opened, the same number of holes will be closed on the second nine to commence reconstruction of the second stage – holes 10 to 18. “On October 1 we will open four of the renovated holes on the new nine and then undergo a month’s work of construction on four holes on the second nine,” he said. “In November we will then open another three new holes and so, with the final two holes by mid-December we will have the entire new nine open.”
Casey said the layout of the course “will virtually remain the same with just a couple of holes being lengthened or shortened to improve their strength”. “While it is a full reconstruction with greens, tees, fairways and bunkers being completely redeveloped, the routing will be much the same and there will not be any new holes. “The Club’s Board wanted to achieve a balance where there were some holes becoming more difficult and other holes becoming easier. Being a members’ course the Board did not want Royal Canberra to become any more difficult, but simply a better test of golf strategy. “We think that aim is being achieved in that the fairways are more open and accommodating whilst the aspects of the greens and positioning of bunkers ensures that there are benefits to playing strategically and by playing the holes from September 2015 | INSIDE GOLF TRAVEL

corporate golf days, charity golf days and organised group bookings. Casey said there is a ”fairly open minded view” at Royal Canberra as to whether the club will add to its long and impressive history of staging major amateur and professional tournaments. “We are projecting to finish the renovations in 2017, and acknowledging the grow-in time needed for the new work, we probably could consider staging another Australian Women’s Open from 2019 onwards,” he said.
The Federal Golf Club a particular position or line. “We plan on holding a Grand Opening when the original Westbourne course is completed, as that is the original course and the one by which we are measured. It is also the layout that everyone remembers from the Open and other tournaments over the years. “The eventual plan is to make all three 18-hole configurations similar in feel. We have commenced a tree management plan, in consultation with Members and relevant authorities, which incorporates extensive plantings into the existing Westbourne Woods but also on holes 19 to 27. This will improve the diversity of the heritage listed site and will result in golfers experiencing a woodland, forested course on all 27 holes.
“Members regularly have the options of three competitions at the same time with people playing either the Yarralumla Course, the Brindabella Course or the Westbourne, which always has been a favourite. “We maintain a membership base of close to 1200 members with a modest waiting list and continued interest in membership. We are anticipating that this interest will grow as the benefits of the Master Plan redevelopment are realised by the golfing community.” Royal Canberra has an active and fun junior and cadet golf program and welcomes budding golfers or those new to the game through its Junior & Novice Memberships. While Royal Canberra is a private golf
club, its world-class golf course remains available for a wide variety of special golf days. Royal Canberra has tee times set aside and welcomes golfers from its impressive array of 41 clubs with reciprocal playing rights - 18 of which are international. PNP offers the perfect fit
If you’re trying to improve your golf game, the answer may not be in adjusting your technique or changing how you hold the grip, but having your club custom fit. Regardless of whether you’re a pro or an amateur, properly-fitted golf clubs will dramatically improve your golf game. In fact, 92% of all golfers are playing with ill-fitting clubs, according to a 2012 study conducted by the Sports Illustrated Golf Group.
When your clubs suit you, your swing will be natural and your shots will be much more consistent. Local golf manufacturer, PNP Golf, offers an expert fitting service at its studio in Fyshwick. Resident master club fitter, Craig Smith, is one of only eight Australians named in the Top 100 Club Fitters Worldwide.
If you purchase the latest advertised club without getting a proper fitting, your game will suffer as you try to mould your body and swing to accommodate an ill-fitting club.
Craig uses state-of-the-art technology to review your swing and is able to suggest adjustments before building your own customised club. He is able to determine the type of shaft, lie angle, length and weight of the club. These factors allow him to build a club specific to your particular golfing skills.
Getting your club custom fit will help relieve your frustration with the game.
The fitting process includes weight sorting and checking every club for lie
and loft to ensure a perfect match with each golfer. Each shaft is pured and spine aligned, frequency matched and fixed for inclusion in the head. Craig believes it is well worth all golfers of all skills to have their clubs custom fit. This way, each club will be in tune with your swing speed and tempo to create optimal ball flight. `Like for like, you will pay no more for properly fitted master clubs than you would for unfitted clubs from the big four manufacturers, but the differences are huge,” he says. Call 02 6239 3462 to arrange your own custom fitting session with Craig. PNP Golf also sells their own range of uniquely designed clubs from their studio at 5 Kembla Street, Fyshwick.
Canberra Family fun in

With a range of galleries, museums, sports activities and attractions, our nation’s capital offers an educational and enjoyable adventure for the entire family.
iking and bushwalking enthusiasts are spoiled for choice in the ACT. One of my favourite hiking areas is the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve, a 40-minute drive from the Canberra city centre. Rich in indigenous and natural heritage, and home to many unique plants and animals, Tidbinbilla offers various walking trails, bicycle riding along the sealed roads and fire trails, and scenic drives with panoramic views of the Tidbinbilla Valley. While there, check out the radio telescopes and space-related gear at the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex, part of NASA’s Deep Space Network. Another great hike is to the top of Mount Taylor (near Woden Valley). More like a really big “hill” versus a true mountain, Mount Taylor is part of the Canberra Nature Park, and stands 856 metres above sea level. There are walking tracks to the peak, and it is suitable for nearly all skill levels. Over 85 species of birds have been identified in the area, and you’re bound to see some roos as well.
Lake Burley Griffin is a magnificent setting for most outdoor activities. Whether you bike, blade, walk or jog around it, you’ll surely experience some spectacular settings, pure tranquility, and heaps of animal life. Another popular way to explore the lake is by canoe, kayak or (for some real exercise) by paddleboat. Kids (and “kids at heart”) will find plenty of excitement at Questacon, an interactive science exhibit featuring hands-on activities, movies, shows, exciting science-type exhibits, a full-motion rollercoaster simulator and more. Or, why not take them to Cockington Green Gardens – a delightful display of meticulously-crafted miniature
sculpture garden and various children’s exhibits. Garden and flower enthusiasts will be in horticulture heaven at the Australian National Botanic Gardens, featuring native plants from all parts of Australia, unique rock gardens, eucalyptus lawns and a magnificent rainforest. buildings, set within beautifully landscaped gardens. One of Canberra’s landmark attractions, it’s won many tourism awards, and is fun for the entire family. Packed with memorabilia, personal stories, displays, sculptures and exhibits, the Australian War Memorial offers a unique glimpse into the lives of the soldiers (and families) that endure the conflict of war. The National Gallery highlights the talent of Australian and international artists, and features something for everyone, including Sidney Nolan’s Ned Kelly collection, Indian and South East Asian pieces, a
