THE ISLAND IS KING George Begg

B

est known for its cheese, crayfish and free range beef, tiny King Island in Bass Strait is one of those laidback places where the visitor can enjoy a holiday without the commercialization that seems to be the norm in this day and age. The holiday maker is well catered for with fishing, swimming, some excellent surf breaks and a great place for foodies to both learn to cook and dine. The delicious local produce is a must for any gourmet. Recently, however, golf has been the keyword on the island, and the laid-back atmosphere has been quietly replaced

with a definite air of excitement about the opening of Australia’s newest golfing gems, Cape Wickham and Ocean Dunes. We made the trek to this tiny island last month, to see what the fuss was all about. After our 40-minute flight from Melbourne, our group arrived at Currie on the west coast of the island ready to see what golfers of Australia and overseas will be soon lining up to play. After checking in at our motel, it was off to the North of the island and see Cape Wickham Links. No one was to be let down, as those in the party quickly ran out of superlatives about what they saw.

Laid out by American Mike Devries and in the shadow of the 48m tall Cape Wickham lighthouse, the Cape Wickham Links will be a definite contender for the world’s top 100 golf courses possibly within its first two years of operation. Next on the agenda was Ocean Dunes and it, too, has everything that the ardent golfer could want. Ocean Dunes has been designed and carefully nurtured by Graham Grant and it is destined for golf course greatness. After they had played both courses—as well as the original course at the King Island Golf and Bowling Club in Currie—

our group was full of praise for the courses and the setting. “While the new courses on King Island had not fully opened, it is without doubt that they will become a must play destination for all golfers and they will rival any courses in Australia,” says Richard Davey from the Qantas Golf Club. “Both Cape Wickham and Ocean Dunes captivate the golfer from the outset with an intricacy of design that fully leverages the dunes, shoreline and inland areas in a way that creates a unique challenge that will not easily be forgotten.” King Island’s Mayor, Duncan Mcfie commented: “I’m excited by the prospect of King Island being placed on the golf tourism world map with the soon to be opened Cape Wickham and Ocean Dunes Courses. We’re already famous for our cheese, beef and seafood so to now have challenging golf courses added to our list of activities is exciting and we look forward to welcoming golfers to our island.” For those that want to get in first, the Qantas Golf Club has an opening special of a golf and gourmet package already available with 18 holes at Cape Wickham, 9 holes at Ocean Dunes as well as 9 holes at the King Island Golf and Bowling Club course. To find out more or to join in a trip, visit www.qantasgolfclub.com. Long-established air touring companies Air Adventure (golf.airadventure.com.au) and Australian Air Holidays (www.australianairholidays.com) operate charter flights to King Island. Warrnambool Golf Club Warrnambool is a classicallydesigned course laid out between and over a massive tertiary dune system. the dedicated golf tourist, social golfing groups or family holiday makers. The influence of the ever-present wind cannot be understated and really adds to the challenge of a layout that offers variety from one round to the next. It is perhaps this aspect which shaped the game of Warrnambool’s most famous golfing export, Marc Leishman, to the level of success he now enjoys.

The course has received a good deal of attention over recent years and the installation of an integrated irrigation system, supplied with recycled water, has allowed the staff to present the course in immaculate condition. In addition, the club has launched a unique moniker for a trio of their most challenging holes—starting from the short par-4 4th and ending on the

Borrowing from the location’s proximity to Victoria’s Shipwreck Coast—up to18 ships have found their resting place within 2km of the club—Warrnambool Golf Club has named this menacing trio of holes as “Shipwreck Bend”, with the warning that these holes can easily “wreck” a good round by players of any level. Standing on the tee of the imposing

GOLF ON THE GREAT OCEAN ROAD 4th hole (complete with a ship’s anchor guarding the tee box), one must be sure to avoid the large waste bunker on the right side, lest you be faced with either a lost ball, or a very difficult approach shot. Similar hazards are apparent on both the 5th and 6th holes, as finding the fairways is paramount to success on these holes. There are many holes along the course which offer risk/reward options, stunning views and challenging golf. In fact, the quality of golf on this course goes beyond the typical “country course” feel, and the course would not feel out of place among many of Melbourne’s great golfing areas, notably the Mornington Peninsula. So if you’ve never played at Warrnambool, we recommend you be sure to add it to your list. RACV Torquay Resort Located at 1 Great Ocean Road, RACV Torquay Resort sits at the start of Victoria’s premier tourist drive destination and is a leisurely 75 minutes’ drive from Melbourne. Perched within the backdrop of the Torquay and Jan Juc beaches, the resort

is set on an expansive golf course with spectacular ocean views and beach access. Opened in June 2013, the resort is an architectural delight, featuring rammed earth walls and gentle curves that mirror that of the landscape. Featuring 92 ocean or golf course view rooms and suites, conference facilities, Day spa with Turkish Hammam bathing area and a full Restaurant, Bistro and bar, the resort has everything for your quick getaway, corporate package or golfing adventure. For the non-golfers in your group, there are two multipurpose floodlit tennis courts, a 25m heated indoor pool, gym, spa and sauna. There is even a children’s playground and jumping pillow for the kids. The par-71 course has gone through some recent renovations by Ogilvy Clayton—a Melbourne design team headed by Geoff Ogilvy and Mike Clayton. Inside Golf played the course following the redevelopment and we were impressed with its playability, challenge and scenic beauty. The couch fairways are generally wide and inviting, giving you plenty of opportunities to open up the shoulders and have a go at a monster drive. But beware of the rough and strategicallyplaced obstacles along the way, from the tricky bunkers to the ball-grabbing wetlands and lakes (with a few strongsloped fairways feeding right into danger), they can spoil your game.

GOLF ON THE GREAT OCEAN ROAD

Portarlington Golf Club Situated on the beautiful Bellarine Peninsula just minutes from the town centre of Portarlington and the waterfront, no trip along the Great Ocean Road would be complete without a round or two at the Portarlington Golf Club. While it may not be on many Melbourne golfers’ radar, this gem of a club is cherished by those “in the know”. A bustling, friendly and welcoming club, there is a certain energy about Portarlington Golf Club which you won’t find elsewhere; so it’s no wonder why their annual Pro-Am has been voted by the players of the PGA as the best regional Pro-Am Course of the year for multiple years.

The course itself is a treat, with lush, Santa Ana Couch fairways along the 5949m, par- 72, tree-lined Tony Cashmore design. The greens are in excellent condition all year round, and there are a pleasing variety of holes throughout the course, with our pick being the par-3 17th, which features a water carry over a serene pond to a well-guarded green. There have also been recent works done to a selection of the course’s bunkers, making the holes more challenging and pleasing to the eye. Curlewis Golf Club One of Australia’s more iconic and enjoyable golf courses, Curlewis Golf Club on Victoria’s Bellarine Peninsula, has recently begun a new chapter in the club’s history. Following the recent purchase of the

club by Bellarine locals David and Lyndsay Sharp (of Ladcom Pty Ltd - owners of Leura Park Estate, Jack Rabbit Vineyard and Flying Brick Cider Co.) the couple have begun rolling out a host of course and club house improvements with the goal of establishing a new benchmark in

Groups of golfers, many of whom return annually, have been making use of the 19 guest rooms on the upper level of the clubhouse since it opened in December 1924. With stunning architecture and captivating views, it is a clubhouse designed for all seasons. House guests can enjoy the expansive balconies in summer or warm themselves after a Scottish links-like experience before the luxurious open fires during the cooler months. Other facilities at the club include a par three course and several mod-grass tennis courts; while inside the clubhouse you’ll find a billiards room along with formal and informal dining areas. And it’s not just the course that is highly rated: one of Australia’s annual golf publications rated the club the best in Australia for food and beverage in 2014. The club extends a warm welcome 8

GOLF ON THE GREAT OCEAN ROAD regional golfing experience. Australian golf course designer Michael Clayton has been secured to initiate and oversee the activation of a contemporary course Master Plan, while the clubhouse is set for a major renovation, with accommodation planned in the near future. The early effects of the plan are already being felt, as the interior decor of the clubhouse is already sporting a fresh, new look, which makes it a warm and welcome area for pre or post-round drinks, or to sample the food from their recently updated menu. In addition, the club has seen an influx of new members, with a boost of 65 members joining over the span of two months. Junior golfers are also flocking to the course, with a recent junior clinic selling out quickly. Just 10 minutes from Geelong, Curlewis Golf Club currently boasts a 6150 metre Par-72 course with naturally undulating fairways, large contoured greens and a challenge for the serious and social golfer. With its views towards the bay, undulating fairways and natural vegetation, Curlewis Golf Club is also dearly loved as a haven for wildlife. Curlewis’s risk and reward design has been compared with some of Melbourne’s famous courses. The opening short par-5, and the following two short par-4’s would not be out of place on any of the best courses on the Melbourne Sandbelt. In 2013 the course was ranked in Ausgolf’s Top 50 Public Access courses while in 2014 Curlewis was ranked in Golf Australia

Anglesea Golf Club Magazine’s Top 100 courses. As such, Curlewis is a must play when visiting the Bellarine. The course’s signature hole is the Par-3, 139m 8th hole. This beauty features a twotiered, elevated green than can be tricky if you land the ball in the wrong area. It also has deep bunkers on the front, left and right of the green. If you miss the green,

and also miss the bunkers, your ball will run anything up to 15 metres into the surrounding gulley leaving a very tricky pitch.

The Curlewis Staff are also available to provide information on the range of membership categories. Green fees are $35 on weekdays, $47 on Saturday and $40 on Sunday. Discounts are available for group golf bookings.

The licensed clubhouse has a fullyserviced bar and can be hired for corporate and private functions, with the dining room comfortably seating up to 120 guests.

GOLF ON THE GREAT OCEAN ROAD

Anglesea Golf Club The Anglesea Golf Course, situated on the Great Ocean Road, is an undulating 6074m Par-73 layout set in natural bushland. A feature of the course is the number of elevated greens that require plenty of thought when selecting your club. Adding to the mix are 42 “sandbelt style bunkers sprinkled throughout the course, eucalypt tree-lined fairways, and the ever-present resident population of around 300 Eastern Grey Kangaroos. These features all combine to produce a stimulating round of golf. The Club has just opened a 6-bay driving range with hire balls. One Bucket, 40 Balls, $7.00 and two Buckets for $12.00. The Clubhouse bar and bistro are open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. GOLF ON THE GREAT OCEAN ROAD Located 5km east of the historic Port Fairy township, the course is consistently ranked in the “50 Best Public Access Courses in Australia” and in the “25 Best in Victoria.” Course designer Mike Clayton once rated it as “the best value golf in Australia.” There are numerous highlights on this outstanding course. The 5th hole, a 448-metre par-5, is one of the most beautiful holes on the course with a lovely wide and undulating fairway that sweeps uphill and curves from left to right. Strategically-placed bunkers demand accuracy on the second shot before the approach to a fast back-tofront sloping green. The 8th is a stunning 122-metre downhill par-3 to a large rolling green that requires anything from a wedge to a 3-iron depending on the wind and skill of the golfer.

Holes 12 to 16 are agreed by many to be among the best stretch of golf holes in the country, with spectacular ocean views (providing frequent sightings of southern right whales during the winter and early spring) and some very challenging hole designs.

The Lonsdale Golf Club continues to provide a high-class sandbelt course, quality practice facilities and a fullystocked pro shop with Professional. The Tea Trees bistro in the Clubhouse can cater for all food and beverage requirements including functions. For more information visit www.lonsdalegc.com.au or phone (03) 5258 1955.

Winding its way through unspoilt sand dunes, with spectacular views to be had at every turn, Port Fairy Golf Club is a classic links-style course that is reminiscent of the great layouts found in Ireland. So if you’ve ever fancied playing a great Irish links course, but don’t have the money or time to get there, then Port Fairy is the perfect alternative.

The twelfth is a 470-metre par-5 along the ocean with fabulous views. The right hand side is all OOB, and treacherous swathes of marram grass await the wayward shot to the left. The 409-metre 14th plays straight at the ocean and is nearly impossible to reach in two into the wind, and extremely difficult to hold when played downwind.

Thirteenth Beach Golf Links Located on the Bellarine Peninsula – just 15 minutes from Torquay or Geelong-Thirteenth Beach Golf Links features two spectacular 18-hole golf courses: the Beach Course (designed by Tony Cashmore) and the Creek Course, designed by Sir Nick Faldo and Tony Cashmore). The Beach Course, much of which winds through spectacular foreshore sand dunes, is true links style while the Creek Course is in a parkland setting, not unlike the courses on Melbourne’s famous Sandbelt. Both courses are built on sand-based sandstone structure, and the facility’s southern boundary abuts 2.1 km of the famous 13th Beach surf beach. Thirteenth Beach is the home of the 2013, 2014 and 2015 Men’s and Women’s Victorian Open, joining a long list of famous clubs on the Melbourne Sandbelt to have hosted this event. The Beach Course is widely acclaimed

Thirteenth Beach Golf Links as one of Australia’s Best 20 courses. The key feature of the Beach Course is its wonderful set of par-3s. Starting at the brutal 180m 3rd hole to the dainty yet sinister 113m 16th, the par-3s of the Beach Course offer golfers of all levels a true test of their iron play. The 7th and 12th are spectacular holes, nestled in natural sand dunes.

The Creek Course has continued to grow in stature since its opening in 2004. The course is characterised by gently undulating couch fairways, huge, deep bunkers filled with yellow sand, and firm true greens surrounded by interesting bumps, swales and hollows, all closely mown. There is also plenty of greenside bunkering that helps form the slopes of

the putting surfaces in the best traditions of Melbourne’s Sandbelt much admired by Faldo. In addition, there is plenty of water on the course, with hazards on the 7th, 8th, 10th, 12th, 14th, 15th and 17th holes. Both courses are irrigated with recycled water supplied by Barwon Water from its nearby Black Rock treatment plant. This

The Sands Torquay The Sands Torquay is a beautifully situated golf course and resort which makes the most of fantastic scenery and the relaxed feel of the surf coast and windswept dunes. The course was established in 2004 and has a classic design by Australian PGA Tour Professional Stuart Appleby that allows for all levels of golfers to take on the five tee positions and different difficulty ratings available. The views throughout the course are magnificent, the greens are firm and true,

and the course itself is in great condition. The Sands is a nicely manicured and quite challenging golf course which doesn’t necessarily require booming drives. Indeed, a solid course management strategy is key to success at this wonderful course. Benefits of the course and resort include a 50 cart fleet to help move you around the course, fantastic championship level practice facilities (also open to the public outside of members times) and the beautiful Hanners restaurant and

alfresco area that is perfect for golfers and visitors to enjoy a meal and a drink while overlooking the stunning golf backdrop. When visiting the Surf Coast and the Bellarine for golf, The Sands is high on the list for a weekend game with public access allowed after 10am on Sunday mornings. Geelong is also home to a burgeoning café, restaurant and brewery scene; from hot coffee spots, cosmopolitan wine bars, trendy cafes, superb restaurants and eclectic brewery establishments, such as Little Creatures Brewery, the city is blossoming.

Victoria’s second largest city, more now than its industrial and manufacturing past, boasts a stunning waterfront bustling with activity. It’s also basking in a renaissance of reinvention as breweries, galleries, markets, cafes and more are the new life of old woollen mills, industrial spaces, wine barrel halls, recycled shipping containers and more. Generations have enjoyed Geelong’s Waterfront with its bounty of whimsical bollards, restored carousel and picturesque Cunningham Pier, art deco promenade and swimming pavilion. You’ll find markets, events and places for a lazy lunch with a view. The city itself hosts museums, a new architecturally designed library, galleries, and retail precincts. The Bellarine It’s hard to believe that the rural vistas and small-town charms of The Bellarine begin just over an hour from Melbourne. Here you can discover the gentle pleasures of coastal walks, fishing, wine tasting and the freshest local produce. Blessed in its location, The Bellarine faces Port Phillip Bay on its northern and eastern shores and Bass Strait to the south. Water activities abound in the warmer months, ranging from swimming and fishing in the bay to sensational

In winter and spring The Bellarine is equally charming, offering a wealth of maritime history to uncover, a sophisticated food and wine scene and pretty villages to discover. The hamlet of Barwon Heads, located at the mouth of the Barwon River, has quiet river beaches, friendly cafes and fishing opportunities. Barwon Heads is well known for its world-class links-style golf courses. Thirteenth Beach Golf Links features two prestigious courses, both of which have been recognised on lists of Australia’s best. Nearby, Barwon Heads Golf Club has a National Trust classified clubhouse famed for its ambience and old world charm, and a course with breathtaking ocean views, fresh sea air and friendly wildlife. The historic village of Queenscliff has elegant Victoria-era buildings, art galleries, boutiques and provedores line the streets and there are delightful places to eat. History buffs will enjoy visiting Fort Queenscliff, where you can learn about 19th-century military history, or the Queenscliffe Maritime Museum, which tells the story of the area’s seafaring traditions. Outside the main villages, the Bellarine offers a host of food and wine experiences that can be uncovered by following the Bellarine Taste Trail. The Trail stops by farmgates, wineries, provedores, restaurants and cafes. Secret Harbour Golf Links

Signature hole #9, par-4 What makes it great: The 386-metre par-4 ninth signature hole plays straight into the prevailing wind with a 220m carry over bunkers. Large bunkers protect the undulating green on the right hand side and a long water hazard on the left. When the pin position is in the back, left-hand corner of the green, a large hazard comes into play, leaving a small, shallow portion for your landing area. The picturesque course stretches to 6667m from the championship tees and features pristine greens. Being a coastal golf course, a knockdown shot comes in handy. The nice thing about Secret Harbour Golf Links is the greens run true and are not too tricky to read. Because of the course’s location, wind

conditions also play a critical role. Visually and mentally challenging, the golf course is accommodating to players of all standards. Secret Harbour Golf Links is the perfect venue for social, competition and corporate golf.

Into the blue... Great golf in The Blue Mountains

Leura Golf Club

T

HERE are a number of hidden gems scattered about the Blue Mountains and each offers a panorama that could even inspire non-golfers to break the mould and have a game. Just look at the photos on these pages and you will see why these courses offer some of the best value for money golf facilities in the country. The Blue Mountains, a 90-minute drive from Sydney, has other advantages – it’s where you’ll start to breathe in the crisp, clean fresh air. 18

INSIDE GOLF TRAVEL | November 2015

There is plenty of debate among the golf clubs over who has the best views in the mountains. Still, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and the friendly rivalry will continue for a while yet. The Blue Mountains is picturesque with vistas to die for and the colour and the hues of the flowers and trees, particularly at Blackheath, are magnificent. Golfers and non-golfers alike are missing out if they don’t book a Blue Mountains holiday.

Leura Golf Club Variety and fine conditioning define Leura Golf Club’s 18-hole golf course. Located just over a 90-minute drive from Sydney Airport, Leura Golf Club has been luring golfers for more than 100 years. That’s because it’s nestled high up in the Blue Mountains, which come alive when playing golf at Leura. Locals say it’s close to heaven both geographically and in the hearts of members and visitors. The golf course has exceptional views

from every hole, but it’s the 14th that leaves everyone gasping in awe. Bordered by one of golf’s biggest hazards – the Jamison Valley – the hole is simply stunning. The views across the valley are breathtaking, and that’s why brides flock to have the best day of their lives recorded near the green with the valley and mountains as a backdrop. They reckon there are more shots taken with cameras than golf clubs on this hole. The green has a 40 to 50-kilometre

blue mountains

unimpeded view straight down the Jamison to faraway Mittagong and the Southern Highlands. Mind you, the entire course is picturesque and one of the best challenges in the mountains. The back nine is more demanding, particularly the 13th, 14th and 16th holes. With four par-5s (two on each nine) and seven par-3s, the challenging layout allows golfers to use every club in the bag. The course has it all – narrow chutes, acute shot angles, blind tee shots, doglegs, testing rough and undulating slopes. The uphill sixth hole offers the first glimpse of the magnificent Jamison Valley – a welcome bonus especially if you’ve made a mess of what is arguably the hardest hole on the course. Some of the highlights would include the drives on the 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 16th and 17th dealing with water, OOB, narrow shot lines, precipitous slopes and untouched eucalypt forest with all its difficulties of leaf, stick and bark litter and overhanging branches. That’s an incentive to stay on the fairways. After the round, enjoy a drink on the deck overlooking the course, or stay for dinner.

Leura Golf Club The highly recommended Fairways Restaurant is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week and offers affordable meals. The comfortable clubhouse offers all the facilities you’d expect including gaming, pool tables and television screens to watch the latest sporting events. There is also a vast array of good quality

accommodation in the area including five-star Fairmont Resort, which is right behind the clubhouse. Tuition and group clinics for conference delegates can be arranged with the Pro Shop. Carts and hire equipment are also available.

Thailand has become a world-class golf destination, with some of best championship and resort courses in Asia with hotel accommodation to match. “We have a great tournament and 5-star tour planned,” says Ellis, who has been running professional and amateur golf events at numerous destinations for more than 25 years. “You don’t have to have a single-figure handicap to play. If you enjoy the challenge of playing great courses and don’t mind a few side bets and a good laugh, we would love to see you.” The Thailand Championship Golf Tour (March 30 to April 9, 2016) is designed for the golf enthusiast, and will see guests playing seven of the best golf courses in Asia: three courses in Pattaya rated amongst the best in Asia, a round at the number one course in Bangkok, a

fantastic new course in Bangkok, and a trip to the seaside town of Hua Hin to play two golf courses voted best in Asia and host to a European tour event.

The Marriott Thailand Golf Classic is part of the tour, which is a three-round individual and team’s tournament played in Pattaya at the Siam Country Club’s famous Old course, the new Waterside course plus the great Jack Nicklaus designed Lam Cha Bang. You will have your own personal caddy and cart for every round, stay at five-star hotels, play for some great prizes, and join in the daily competition and side bets. If Fiji is more to your liking, then The Air New Zealand Airpoints Pro-Am event (May 25 to 29) might be right up your alley. The tournament has it all, and is open to men and women who have an official handicap. To start proceedings there is the Sheraton welcome cocktail party, where players and non-players will be presented with a special tournament gift pack. The next morning after breakfast you will be transferred to the

world-class Natadola Bay golf course, where could sharpen up your game at the golf clinic and demonstration conducted by leading golf professionals. Then it’s the “Sulu Shoot Out”, a fun tournament for the amateurs. The two rounds of the ProAm event will be played at the Denarau Golf Course which is only 200 meters from your hotel. You will be joined by the golf professionals from USA, Australia, Pacific Islands and New Zealand for the two day Pro-Am. The Starwood Golf Classic (June 7 to 11) is an International Pro-Am and Teams tournament, offering over $130,000 in professional prize money and amateur prizes. The event will be played over four rounds of golf. Two rounds at Natadola Bay and two rounds at the challenging resort course at the Denarau Golf & Racquet Club. The tournament has an individual competition for amateurs and professionals, but the emphasis is on the team’s net and gross events. Each team will be made up of one professional and three amateurs. Join the Race to Dubai

By David Newbery

I

F you love golf and travel and have Dubai on your bucket list now is the perfect time to tick it off.

Right now, final preparations are being made to the magnificent Greg Normandesigned Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates for the European Tour’s Race to Dubai season finale – the $US8m DP World Tour Championship. If you are there from November 19-22, don’t miss this extravaganza. I was there last year to see Rory McIlroy repeat his 2012 heroics to become the first player to win for the second time the coveted Race to Dubai and it was brilliant watching Rory do battle with Henrik Stenson, Ernie Els, Justin Rose and others. Currently, Rory leads the race but hot on his heels is a long list of star players. If you are keen to play golf, I recommend Norman’s Earth Course (if you can get on) and adjacent Fire Course as well as the Els Club and the Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club. The holes at the Els Club all constitute characteristics from Ernie’s favourite courses – bunkers from Royal Melbourne, greens resembling Pinehurst No. 2 and wide, rolling links fairways. Jack Nicklaus, Karl Litten, Robert Trent

Jones II, Nick Faldo and others have designed courses in Dubai and they are a blessing for golf thrill-seekers. When you do manage to drag yourself away from golf, make sure you travel up the world’s tallest building – the 828m Burj Khalifa. It’s more than twice as high as the Empire State Building. Another eye-opener is the Dubai Mall. With 1200 retail shops and 160 restaurants, it’s the world’s biggest

shopping mall. Little wonder Dubai has become a handy stopover for Australians travelling to Europe. The mall even has an aquarium and underwater zoo with 30,000 sea creatures. Outside the mall and in the shadow of the world’s tallest building is the world’s largest dancing fountain set on the 30acre Burj Lake.

illuminated by thousands of lights, shoot up 150m in the air. It’s an amazing spectacle. A sand safari is another must-do adventure. I had to hold on to my keffiyeh (traditional Middle Eastern headdress) as the driver of an open 1950s Land Rover negotiated sand dune after sand dune en route to a wonderful sunset photo-shoot and falconry display.

of how Dubai grew from a fishing village to the metropolis you see today.

And if you need a cool break visit the world’s largest indoor snow skiing park at the Mall of the Emirates.

Another way to see Dubai is to take a scenic flight in a nine-seater Cessna seaplane.

Away from the glitz and glamour and across Dubai Creek, tourists can enjoy a more authentic shopping experience.

From the air, you can experience the marvel of engineering and creativity on reclaimed land – the Palm Jumeirah, which is home to opulent hotels including the Waldorf Astoria.

You cross the creek on an open wooden water taxi dodging ancient dhows that trade around the Gulf. There is an atmosphere of vibrancy around the markets as tourists haggle over textiles, spices, jewellery, shoes, bags, perfume and more. Step back in time and explore the labyrinth of cobbled streets in the restored Al Fahidi Historic District with its wind-towered houses, art galleries and cafes. The Dubai Museum tells the story

The seaplane takes off from Jebel Ali Golf Resort and takes in the wonders of Palm Jumeirah, Burj Khalifa, World Islands, Burj Al Arab as well as the historic Dubai Creek before landing beside the Dubai Creek golf course. You virtually step off the plane and onto the first tee. Now that’s what I call a perfect landing.

Australia’s top golf destinations for

spring/summer A player tees off at The National Golf Club, Victoria

T

he spring/summer season is here and it’s the perfect time to plan a golf getaway with friends, work mates or the family. It’s also never been a better time to enjoy golf travel within Australia. So where are the latest top golf destinations in Australia? What accommodation options are available and which golf courses will best suit your group’s requirements and budget? This is where an experienced golf travel planner can save you both time and money and help you coordinate the perfect golf package that is customised to meet all your needs. Great Golf Getaways is one such company based in Australia that specialises in customised golf tour planning for groups of all sizes including weekend golf

getaways and group tours for club members, social clubs and corporate events. Inside Golf recently spoke to Lee at Great Golf Getaways to find out the latest trends, package deals and where golfers should be planning their next golf trip this coming spring/summer season. Here are some of Lee’s recommendations:

MORNINGTON PENINSULA (VIC) With close to 20 golf courses to choose from and several of those ranked in the top 20 in Australia, the Mornington Peninsula is without doubt one of Australia’s top golf destinations. There is a great range of accommodation options from serviced apartments, to

resort/hotel room types and house rental also. With the new Peninsula link freeway, you are within easy access to/from Melbourne’s CBD just over a 1-hour drive. This is the perfect destination to plan a 7-night tour or longer and enjoy playing a different golf course every day. The prestigious National Golf Club recently merged with Long Island Golf Club and now boasts a choice of four 18-hole course options and is a must see/play for visiting golfers who are members of an interstate club. Packages can also be customised to include Melbourne sand-belt courses in your itinerary.

LAUNCESTON (TAS) and KING ISLAND The warm summer months are the ideal time to head south to play Barnbougle and The Lost Farm which are both currently ranked within the top 25 in the world and top 10 courses in Australia. The spring/summer is the peak golfing season in Tasmania so you need to plan your tour dates well in advance. But this destination is an experience that should be on every golfer’s bucket list and one destination that many golfers choose for annual return trips to play these magnificent courses.

With the forthcoming opening of the two new courses, Cape Wickham and Ocean Dunes on King Island in early 2016, you can combine an exciting new King Island golf package with your next trip to Tasmania. The added allure of King Island is its remoteness and spectacular scenery, not to mention the superb local produce including the renowned King Island cheese and abundance of fresh seafood and high quality beef. The Industry predictions are that these two new spectacular courses will also rank in the future as world-class golf courses and within Australia’s top 10 destinations.

MANDURAH / PERTH (WA) For those living in the Eastern states of Australia, travel to WA has never been more affordable and you can take advantage of great airfare specials. The coastal region of Mandurah is located just over one hour’s drive south from Perth and five premier courses all offering a different experience and some featuring stunning coastal scenery such as The Cut. Beachfront apartmentstyle accommodation is very popular and all courses are within an easy 10-20 minute drive. Further south you’ll find the Margaret River region which also has several courses in the area and the perfect spot to explore the local wineries and award-winning wines. Or if you travel north from Mandurah you can include Perth and surrounds in your itinerary with several course options available including the renowned Joondalup Resort and its 27-hole championship course. The summer season through to Autumn is definitely one of the best seasons to head west and a great destination for both golf travel and sightseeing.

NEWCASTLE & PORT STEPHENS / HUNTER VALLEY (NSW) Just a two-hour drive north from Sydney is the coastal city of Newcastle. Interstate visitors can also fly direct to Newcastle from Melbourne and Brisbane. Newcastle

A golf holiday with friends and family is easy when you use an experienced golf travel planner and Port Stephens is great base for a golf trip with many apartments and hotels within easy access to the local courses in the area including Newcastle Golf Club which is consistently ranked within Australia’s top 20 courses. You are also less than one hour’s drive to the Hunter Valley region where there are another four top courses to play. With easy access via Newcastle Airport this is a destination that is ideal for a weekend golf trip or to create a longer 5 or 7-night stay, and for those who love to combine golf, gourmet food and wine you have over 150 wineries to explore in the Hunter Valley!

GOLD COAST (QLD) Great golf courses, beaches, nightlife and diverse range of accommodation makes the Gold Coast a popular destination for all types of golf travel including groups, couples and family holidays. You can choose to stay ‘on course’ at well known golf resorts like Royal Pines and Sanctuary Cove Resort, ideal for weekend getaways, or for longer stays consider serviced apartments that are easy walking distance to the local restaurant and café precincts, beachfront and also Jupiters Casino.

Tasmania hosts Australia’s best tournament for club golfers T

asmania’s appeal is undeniable. Year on year record numbers of holiday makers are choosing the Apple Isle and its 16 hours of daylight each day to make the most of their summer holidays. But, how can Tasmania - who does not command the golfing reputation of Melbourne’s sandbelt, the Mornington Peninsula, or the Gold Coast – attract nearly 400 golfers each January to host Australia’s best week of golf for club golfers? Well known for hosting Australia’s and Asia’s biggest and best value tournaments for club golfers, Go Golfing’s annual Wrest Point International Masters Golf Championship in Hobart has been voted the best amateur golf tournament in a survey of 27,200 golfers.

INSIDE GOLF TRAVEL | November 2015

The Tasmanian International Masters Golf Championship is a week of golf, entertainment and social fun that brings together nearly 400 golfers from more than 120 golf clubs. It welcomes men and women over 35 and you need to have an official golf handicapwhatever it may be. There are 15 divisions based on age and handicap, and you can be assured to play and compete with golfers your own age and standard.

This is a four round tournament with all golfers playing two rounds at both Royal Hobart and Tasmania golf clubs. Tasmania is built on a bluff, surrounded by water and has a hole that is favourably compared to the famed 18th hole at Pebble Beach. In stark contrast, Royal Hobart is built on possibly the flattest parcel of land of

any course. It draws its character from tree lined fairways with towering gums, strategic bunkering that demands course management and cushioned fairways that are a dream to play off. Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman and Gary Player all contested an Australian Open here. And the greens at both courses are fast and true – confident putters will excel. The tournament brings together golfers from every corner of Australia, many clubs and a smattering of overseas entrants. There are singles, couples and groups. Over 90% of participants know fewer than four other players before the event starts and the Go Golfing team has a reputation for providing a friendly atmosphere and inclusive events so that everyone has an enjoyable and relaxing time. Go Golfing’s founder, Peter McCarthy, always ensures the event program is laced with fun, lots of laughs and a relaxed setting where people feel comfortable and

included. “When a reclusive widow tells me that coming to the Wrest Point Masters has been the happiest week since her husband passed then I guess we are doing something right.” “We make sure we serve up quality food, wine and beer. We bring in world-class comedy for the opening night dinner and we always have a dance band on the final night who play favourites that have the dance floor overflowing. There are winemaker dinners, trivia nights, day tours to leading attractions, nightly happy hours and presentations, lots of time to let personality shine.” “We listen to the players. Many of the improvements we make to Go Golfing tournaments are inspired by the feedback from clients. This year we are adding a ‘single mingle’ before the opening dinner. This way singles and people attending on their own can get to know a few people and that’s more comfortable than arriving at a big dinner on your own.

“This is the 16th annual Wrest Point Masters and the Go Golfing event team continue to challenge themselves to make the event an event to remember. Even with 400 people, there are so many things we do to make participants feel special, including the non playing partners.” The 16th annual Wrest Point International Masters Golf Championship runs 10-15 January 2016. Some players choose to extend their Tassie golfing experience and play in the Barnbougle 4 Ball Challenge from 16-22 January. For more information on both tournaments visit www.gogolfing.net.au or freecall 1300 55 28 55. •
