Swing along the golf trail O ne of Australia’s top golfing destinations, Melbourne’s famed Mornington Peninsula, is home to the superb Mornington Peninsula Golf Trail, which features 14 clubs and 16 outstanding courses (with 11 of the courses ranked in Australia’s Top 100).
But it’s not just the number of clubs and courses that draw the acclaim, it’s the astonishing variety of terrain and playability for experienced and novice golfers; The Mornington Peninsula Golf Trail features links, parkland and resort courses, many designed by prominent golf architects such as Tom Doak, Greg Norman, Robert Trent Jones Jr, Tony Cashmore, Michael Clayton and Thomson Perrett. Sand dunes create naturally contoured challenges, underlying sandy soils drain quickly and the cool maritime climate makes for superb year-round play. The settings are magnificent, with courses perched on clifftops, in nature reserves and commanding spectacular bay and ocean views.
The Trail starts just one hour from Melbourne and stretches from Mornington Golf Club in the north to Sorrento, Portsea and Flinders in the south. All courses are within an easy 30-minute drive of each other. Non-members are also welcome on the Trail courses. Take advantage of the great value golf Hot Deals and get the best play at the best prices. Players will also be rewarded with a free polo top and cap for tackling seven different courses on the Trail. Pick up the Golf Trail map at any of the golf courses or tourism outlets on the Peninsula or visit www.golfmorningtonpeninsula.com.au for more information.
FREE Thailand golf filling fast Gimme Golf’s “Free rounds in Thailand” offer is filling up fast. Allocated only 180 free rounds in partnership with Thai Tourism, more than 70 per cent of the rounds have been snapped up by golfers getting in early for their Thailand golf tour in 2016. Steve Worner, Gimme Golf’s managing director, says there was an unprecedented demand for the bonus rounds after the first advertisement in Inside Golf. Steve advised most golfers chose Hua Hin as their region of choice and to play Banyan as their free round. Banyan is a quality course which opened just under 10 years ago and is always in excellent condition coupled with an award-winning clubhouse. Many golfers also chose to spend a few days in Bangkok to take up their other bonus course, Suwan Golf Club, and partner it up with the 5-star Masters replica course Royal Gems as an experienced not to be missed. Gimme Golf is a licensed travel agent located in Melbourne and been operating since 1996. They have an assortment of golfing destinations both internationally and local to assist all golfing groups. They are a one-stop shop for airfares, tee times accommodation and transfers. Sending over 300 golfers yearly to Thailand they are the experts for this destination. Bali National Golf Resort F you’re looking for a new golfing destination, consider embarking upon a Bali golfing holiday in 2016.
For a start, it’s doesn’t leave you jetlagged (less than four hours from the west coast and less than six hours from the east coast) so you can hit the ground running.
Many of the best course designers including Greg Norman, Peter Thomson and Mike Wolveridge have created layouts consistently ranked among the top-100 golf courses in the world.
Then there are the Balinese who are the most gracious, warm and welcoming people while the island is a place of astonishing variety.
Most golf resorts have on-site accommodation or there are firstclass hotels and resorts within walking distance.
It offers amazing cultural and outdoor experiences – both on and off the golf course. When you go in search of excellent golf resorts, you travel through local communities and chaotic village markets where shops draw hagglers and vendors on motorbikes.
D
Dining, too, is an astonishing experience … and inexpensive.

Bali has five golf courses, but it’s the variety of layouts and the Balinese hospitality that brings golfers back.
Here, you can immerse yourself in endless varieties of Balinese cuisine at restaurants and roadside hawker stalls. One night I was part of a group of five who shared seven or eight delicious dishes and beverages for around $100. Yes, gastronomy is another reason why Bali is a favourite with Australian holidaymakers, who make up around 25 per cent of visitors. Another drawcard is it’s a surfer’s paradise and a treasure trove for shopping. Today, golfers from around the globe are marvelling at the tremendous value of golfing holiday opportunities available.
But let’s be clear, golf is one pastime that’s not cheap (more expensive than Australia) while room rates run the gamut – there are hotels and resorts available to suit all budgets. Many golfers choose less-expensive accommodation and splurge on playing more golf and other activities while others split their time between lessexpensive accommodation and five-star resort facilities. Aside from fantastic golf, there’s brilliant surf, snorkelling, white water rafting, caves to explore, nightlife, eclectic bars, cool cafes and chic international boutiques, spa treatments and romantic sunset cruises. The kids will love Monkey Forest and the Bali Safari and Marine Park. Of course, now is an ideal time to starting planning your golfing holiday to Bali. From mid-May to mid-October is the ideal time to play golf in Bali. Once there, what can golfers expect?

Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali Resort WELL, Inside Golf recently travelled to Bali as your forecaddie to check out the golf scene as well as explore accommodation options. On day one, publisher Sam Arthur, David Ross (sales executive) and I tee off with a mid-morning flight from Brisbane to Denpasar’s Ngurah Rai International Airport. There, we connect with our transport driver Nyoman, who points the vehicle in the direction of the Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali Resort just over an hour away. We check into an ocean villa overlooking the 12th green and indulge in a sundowner followed by a sumptuous meal at Driftwood Restaurant – one of a number of eateries on offer.
The stunning ocean views are mesmerising, but our conversation turns to golf and a challenge – a putting duel on the 12th green conveniently located metres from our villa. The sun has disappeared over the horizon so we rely on a dim cart-path light that casts long shadows. Putting in poor light is challenging, but it’s an excellent end to an adventurous day. The sound of crashing waves is the perfect lullaby and I dream of teeing it up on the Greg Norman-designed championship golf course. The next morning, member and guest relations officer Pasko Arma is there to greet us, assign caddies and joins us for a round. As a golfer, you probably know the absurd optimism that floods your brain
Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali Resort on the first tee of an unfamiliar course when you hope that you will at least play to your ability. Now imagine how we felt, standing not just on edge of this impressive golf course on the southwest coast, but on the brink of visiting a different course every day for the next four days. You can’t do that at home with family and work your priority. So, for us, golf in Bali was something to savour without qualm. Pasko tells us Nirwana Bali golf course is famous for its signature seventh hole – a dramatic par-3 over an ocean inlet to a well-guarded green with a distracting view of the famous Tanah Lot Temple resting on the rocky outcrop in the ocean.
It’s a beauty, but the golf course is much more than a one-hole wonder. It is one of the most picturesque golf courses ever built in Asia. A US golf magazine listed it as one of the world’s top-100 courses. Norman’s layout takes golfers on a roller-coaster ride through rice-terraced valleys, across streams, through jungle, over a beach and along stunning ocean cliffs. Whether the wind is blowing or not, this is a challenging golf course. From the Shark tees, the course stretches to 6220m (slope rating 146) and a manageable 5768m (slope 142) off the championship tees. From the women’s tees, it’s 4716m (slope 136).

New Kuta Golf Resort
The closing three holes are among the strongest in Bali as all have narrow streams guarding the approach.
you will have by the time you finish playing this demanding hole, which weaves left to right and is undulating.
There are a number of three- four- and five-star hotels in the area and stay-andplay packages can be arranged.
There is little doubt this is one of the most interesting and challenging golf courses.
Four large fairway bunkers flank the left side and thickly wooded, rocky ground runs all along the right. The green drops away from left front to right rear, has a very narrow opening and is defended on the right by a massive bunker that extends 35 metres back down the right side of the fairway and on the left by another bunker.
Managed by Australian Samuel Clayton, New Kuta Golf Resort, 30 minutes from the airport, is a must-play when visiting Bali.
Add to this a 2500sqm Balinese-styled clubhouse with restaurant, locker room and pro shop facilities, Nirwana Bali truly is a truly top-class golfing experience. Nirwana Bali Golf Club Phone pro shop: +62 361 815 900 Website: www.nirwanabaligolf.com Green fees: $155 for Pan Pacific guests and $240 for non-guests Caddies: Yes Club hire: Yes Shoe hire: Yes Handicap required: No Golf lessons available: Yes Practice facilities: 12 bays for driving practice as well as short-game practice areas. OUR next stop is New Kuta Golf Resort on the island’s southwest rim. The 6587m championship course is an intoxicating, delightful affair built on the brilliant white limestone cliffs and the seemingly endless blue horizon of the Indian Ocean. A quick glance at the limestone cliffs, with its dramatic drop to the surf and beach below, is enough to throw any new visitor into a state of geographical shock. The layout ranks among Asia’s best and most imposing courtesy of its long narrow undulating fairways, challenging rough and testing greens. Because of the location, stiff ocean breezes can threaten havoc with your game no matter which of the five tee boxes you choose.
The par-3 sixth is aptly named The Bunker because it’s an “island green” surrounded by sand. At 163m off the back tee box, careful club selection is paramount but once on the green your job is not over as the many undulations will require concentration to get your putt close to the hole. Holes 14, 15 and 16 have been dubbed Bali’s own version of “Amen Corner”. The trio of holes follow the cliff’s edge some 65 metres above the pounding surf where surfers bob in the ocean like corks as they await the next big wave. You’ll have a difficult time forgetting the par-3 15th – the course’s signature hole. It’s here where golfers take advantage of the “halfway house” to refresh and take in the spectacular views of the sweeping bay. Aptly named “The Cliff Hanger”, the hole ranges in length (105-140m) and 85m for the women. Don’t lose concentration here especially if you have a limited supply of golf balls. In other words, the rough is wet and full of fish … and surfers. The magnificent clubhouse is a fivestar facility with restaurant, bar, spa and function rooms with panoramic views of the lush rolling fairways and ocean.
The first hole, named Lone Pine for the solitary tree growing out of the left fairway bunker, poses no threat. It’s index is 17.
The Link Restaurant, which overlooks the ninth and 18th green, is open daily from 6am for breakfast. It also caters for lunch, morning and afternoon teas as well as light snacks until 7pm.
If you haven’t warmed up by the time you reach the 523m par-5 second hole,
A la carte dining is available every day of the week.

ONE word repeated describes Bali National Golf Resort – class, class, class. Formerly known as Bali Golf and Country Club, Bali National Golf Resort is simply stunning. I guarantee that it will take just one look from Australian golfers to fall in love with this beauty. Originally designed in the late 1980s by Robin Nelson and Rodney Wright, the golf course closed in 2012 for a total revamp and redesign.
Pacific Golf Group (making them the No 1 Golf Resort in Indonesia). They also recently hosted the Bali National Golf Championship (Asian Development Tour) in 2015. “One of the major changes was a switch in grasses away from 328 Bermuda to new paspalum fairways and tees and TifEagle greens,” said longserving course superintendent Mark Isley. There isn’t a blade of grass out of place and the ball sits beautifully atop the grass inviting a clean strike. This scenic 6552m championship course features three distinctive environmental settings. Creeks, canyons, cascading waterfalls, verdant native vegetation and even a temple complement the picturesque landscape. Another standout feature is the kaleidoscope of colour produced by the magnificent trees, garden shrubbery and flowers. The first part of the course plays inland, uphill and then down through tropical vegetation. The first nine holes unveil panoramic views of Nusa Dua, the Indian Ocean and distant islands and volcanoes. Things change noticeably on the back nine. “We call holes 10 to 16 our bunker holes because we have waste bunkers running from tee to green,” Isley says. These holes have gently sculptured fairways set amongst a mature coconut grove where some palms, reaching as high as 35 metres, provide vertical definition to the holes.
The new-look course crafted by Nelson Haworth Golf Course Architects reopened in March 2014 to rave reviews … and awards.
The 17th and 18th holes are brand-new and eye-popping.
General manager Mark Holland, formerly of Links Hope Island on the Gold Coast, told Inside Golf that Bali National had been voted third best renovated golf course worldwide in 2014, and in 2015 they were named the fifth best resort course—Asia
“The 17th used to be a par-4 going up to the beach,” Isley said. “Now it’s a par-3 (167m from the championship tee) with an island green. It’s our signature hole and it is very much reminiscent of the 17th at TPC Sawgrass in Florida.

Bali National Golf Resort “Usually, you are playing into the prevailing breeze off the ocean.” There’s plenty of discussion, banter and club swapping on the tee, but we all find the putting surface with our tee shots from 142m (blue tees) and walk off with pars. The 18th doglegs left around a lake and water cross the fairway in front of the green. A waste bunker lines the water down the left. At 372m (championship tees) and 324m (blue tees) it isn’t the most intimidating par-4, but plenty of golfers drown balls there. Our group doesn’t suffer the same fate and we head to the clubhouse well satisfied with par on a picturesque finishing hole. At Bali National, the fairways are generous, even on the back nine where waste bunkers take up plenty of real estate.

INSIDE GOLF TRAVEL | January 2016
The other nice thing about the golf course is it’s not a ball thief. To lose a ball, you have to hit a very ordinary tee or approach shot. There are so many good holes on this golf course including the par-4 ninth. It’s a terrific hole, which has a rock wall virtually ringing the green. A tree, left-centre in the fairway, stands guard while water and a large bunker protect the green. The par-3s are a treat and vary in design and length. You must play this fabulous course and relax in its equally attractive Balinese yet ultra-modern clubhouse with well-appointed locker rooms, pro shop, Golfers’ Restaurant and Terrace overlooking the 18th green.
Bali National Golf Resort After a round, it’s the ideal spot for a leisurely lunch. You must try the delicious nasi goreng.

A bunker in the heart of the fairway is modelled on the famous Principal’s Nose on the 16th of the Old Course at St Andrews. The 390m par-4 16th (index 2) plays uphill to a difficult green while locals believe the 517m par-5 18th hole is the best finishing hole in Bali. Because of its tree-lined fairways, the parkland course requires accuracy from tee to green. The greens have subtle breaks and it’s important to try to keep the ball under the hole.
Handara Golf & Resort Bali LOCATED in the lush central highlands is the spectacular Handara Golf & Resort Bali. Peter Thomson, Mike Wolveridge and Ronald Fream designed the course out of a dormant volcano some 1400 metres above sea level. The picturesque surroundings give the resort an unrivalled backdrop of clear blue water lakes and equatorial rainforests. Another unique characteristic of this world-renowned golf resort is the yearround coolness of the fresh mountain air (14-24 °C), which makes for a comfortable round of golf. Ranked one of the top-50 courses in the world in 1991, Handara Golf & Resort Bali continues to attract golfers from around the globe.
As for degree of difficulty, the course is a true test from the 6385m championship tees. From the men’s tees (5858m) and the women’s tees (5210m), it’s much more golfer friendly. The slope rating for the championship course is 139, men’s 128 and women’s 131. The course has many memorable and demanding holes including the 398m par4 third (index 1), which requires carefully planning. The hole doglegs right and has a stream down the right that crosses and kisses the fairway at driving distance – 233m. This hole is a test even for the best players. Another memorable hole is the 487m par-5 15th.
What’s nice about Handara Golf & Resort Bali is that the golf course has that intimate charm that gives the feeling you have the place to yourself as each fairway and green is independent of each other. The par-3s are strong holes ranging between 170-185m. Some are uphill and require and extra club while others play shorter and towards the lake. Club selection is critical on a number of the par-4s as a stream comes into play where it crosses the fairways. Play the par-5s well and you can expect a birdie or two, however, any wayward shots will leave you staring at double bogey. It’s a cart only course and, as one of the oldest courses in Indonesia, the caddies come with plenty of experience. The comfortable clubhouse offers men’s and women’s locker rooms and sauna.
A unique large Japanese bath occupies the men’s locker room. After a round, golfers can enjoy a quiet beverage on the deck overlooking the range and 18th hole. The Golf Café is open 6am-6pm. Kamandalu Restaurant offers Indonesian and international cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner and is open from 6am to 10pm while the Lobby Bar is ideal to watch sunset over Lake Buyan. Meadow Springs Golf and Country Club Signature hole #17th, par-4 What makes it great:
to lose a golf ball.
Course length:
Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jnr, Meadow Springs Golf and Country Club offers golf as nature intended.
Many courses have tough finishing holes, but Meadow Springs is different. The 18th, a 460m par-5, gives golfers of all levels a chance to make birdie – or at least par. However, the sea of sand down the right half of the fairway can mean a good card can be ruined if not careful.
Blue 6189m; White 5662m; Red 4997m
The magnificent scenery surrounding this prestigious golf course has made Meadow Springs Golf and Country Club one of the most sought-after wedding venues south of Perth.
Amenities:
While golf course presents a challenging test for all levels of players, it’s also renowned for its playability. Measuring 6189 metres from the blue tees (4997m for women), the golf course promises a unique experience through open bush land – the layout dictated by the natural features of the land. Towering 200-year-old Tuart trees line generous fairways and subtly rolling greens. Meadow Springs has an outstanding layout and is in excellent condition.
Visitors can enjoy the spectacular sunset over the ancient Tuart trees from the expansive windows of the reception rooms. The private terrace is a perfect setting for weddings, parties, corporate events and more.
What is unique about the layout is that few holes run parallel, which gives golfers the feeling they have the place to themself.
Course information:
The other nice thing about the golf course is you have to hit a very poor shot

Remarkable Golf Tours It’s the little things that make a big difference in golf. Whether it’s choosing a certain grip for your putter, the right ball for your swing speed or the best coach to hone your skills. The same applies when it comes to golf travel. Little things matter, and dealing with a ground-based tour agent means you get local information first hand. Somebody on the other end of the phone that you can trust to get things done when you’re trying to organise a party of people and ensure you get to see the best of what NZ has to offer, whether it’s golf courses, restaurants or sightseeing. Remarkable Golf Tours (RGT) was established in Queenstown in 2007 to provide a range of golf services for visitors to New Zealand and have

combination. For more than 20 years Gold Coastbased Go Golfing has been taking golfers to all parts of the globe for hosted golf tournaments and tours. Their annual event and tour calendar features about 20 countries. In February they will chalk up more than 1,000 golfers touring with Go Golfing to South Africa. Similar numbers have travelled to Canada. Tours to the US Masters, Scotland and Ireland, Japan, Vietnam, Spain and Portugal and
New Zealand happen each year, with other destinations every couple of years. In June last year more than 750 golfers played in Go Golfing’s Centara World Masters in Hua Hin, Thailand – that’s a seriously big number. It comes as no surprise that Go Golfing Travel has been awarded Oceania’s Best Golf Tour Operator for the second year running at the prestigious World Golf Awards recently announced in Portugal. In addition, Go Golfing was awarded
Australia’s Best Inbound Golf Tour Operator, in recognition of the service provided to international visitors as well as local golfers exploring the best Australia has to offer. Go Golfing are on track to provide golfing holidays to more than 13,000 golfers this year. According to managing director Peter McCarthy, service and value have underpinned the success of Go Golfing Travel. “Coming from a large family, delivering great value has been at the core of what we offer. The launch of the Luxury Collection has been inspired by an increasing number of clients who are looking for the very best tour experience available. Our worldwide partnerships give us access to some of the most exclusive courses and this is what our Luxury Collection Tours deliver. The accommodation includes castles, chateaux, 6-star hotels and there’s some real magic in the cultural experiences that we have created. You won’t find these experiences in travel brochures, they are unique and only available to those in the know. We have also sourced the top local guides. Yes, our Luxury Collection delivers the best of everything.”
Just this month Go Golfing launched a Luxury Collection Tour to France and Italy. This tour starts and ends with two of Europe’s most iconic landmarks, the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Colosseum in Rome. The itinerary winds its way through the very best of France and Italy’s sights, iconic attractions, rich culture, history and magnificent courses. For golfers and non-golfers, France and Italy serve up a smorgasbord of delights. Befitting a tour of this quality, the No.1 golf course in Continental Europe is on offer. Tour guests will feel like royalty staying in a château, enjoy a private dinner and light show at the Château de Chenonceau, taste the wines of France, breathe the sweet lavender scent of Provence and feel the sand of the Riviera between their toes. They will discover why George Clooney has made Lake Como his home town before they wander through the City of Love, Verona. They will enjoy the gentle swaying of a gondola through the romantic City of Water, Venice, and fall for the magical views over the magnificent Venetian islands. They will bask in the Italian way of life so well portrayed in La Dolce Vita and Roman Holiday as they walk up the Spanish Steps
and lose their heart all over again to the Trevi Fountain. And the golf is nothing short of exquisite. Go Golfing have hand-picked some of the finest and most exclusive courses France and Italy have to offer. You will play golf in the heart of French vineyards, among settings of historical significance and with backdrops of grandeur. First on offer is the Number one golf course in Continental Europe. Hidden deep within a dense old-world forest, the Simpson designed masterpiece is the domain of an exclusive club that as a rule does not accept visitor play. It is a special and very private place. The course is reminiscent of London’s heathland courses, but it stands out for its immaculate presentation and its elite greens. Go Golfing’s Luxury Collection is reserved for tours of spectacular quality and luxury. This is more than a golf tour; it is a journey you’ll never forget. Availability on this tour is strictly limited. Book early to avoid disappointment and take advantage of the early bird special to save $1,000 per couple. For more information: www.GoGolfing.net.au.
