ew events have stood the test of time like the World Masters Golf Championship on the Gold Coast each October. This event for club golfers aged 35 years and over has attracted big numbers from all over Australia, New Zealand and around the world for more than 20 years. This month, we go behind the scenes to see what makes this tournament so popular and what’s in store for the 21st annual tournament this year. Hosted by Gold Coast-based Go Golfing, we chatted with Peter McCarthy, the tournament founder who is still at the helm. What comes as the biggest surprise

is that Peter started the tournament some 13 years before he was even old enough to play in the tournament. “Fresh out of university I secured a contract with the World Masters Games in Brisbane. There were 30 sports and golf was one of the sports I managed. We budgeted for 400 golfers and had more than 1,700 compete. It was massively challenging and working through solutions for all of the challenges and putting on an amazing event, well there’s no better feeling. What can I say, it’s in my blood and I love what I do.”

Peter’s first World Masters tournament was on the Gold Coast in 1996 and attracted 340 players. Tournament numbers peaked at more than 1,000 players about 10 years ago, however this year, entries are being capped at just 600. “For a long time my primary focus was on making the event as big as it can be. But then I had players who come every year telling me the event was too big. One guy approached me on stage to put a call out to his wife as he had spent 15 minutes looking for her. So now my team are firmly focused on how we can make the tournament better and better for players and their partners.” The event has a loyal following with 65% of players returning from one year to the next. More than 90 golfers have played 10 or more years and two players, Dennis 

Marcia Hines, Little River Band and Jerry Lewis have performed at the event. In recent years Australia’s top comedy acts have been the feature entertainment on opening nights. While most will recognise the former layout, the new course features more risk and reward holes and massive undulating greens. Palm Meadows is arguably the best layout on the Gold Coast. Under new

management, course conditioning has returned to the glory days when it hosted Australia’s richest tournament - the Palm Meadows Cup. It has been 6 years since Palm Meadows hosted the World Masters, but with new bunkers, new carts and those fantastic greens, Go Golfing welcomes Palm Meadows’ return this year. The Glades is always a favourite at the Masters. With the completion of new bunkering and upgrades to the practice facilities, it will again be a premier course at the Masters. Home to two of Australia’s newest (and arguably most exciting) golf courses, the tiny island is on the verge of a major boom in golf tourism, as the courses, services, accommodation and food are all becoming renowned across the globe.

The consensus from visitors to Ocean Dunes has been overwhelmingly positive, according to Grant.

Situated near the northwestern tip of King Island and designed by American Mike DeVries and Melbourne’s Darius Oliver, the course has been open for just a few months but was described as one of the “hottest new layouts on the globe”. “From day one, all involved in the Cape Wickham project knew they were dealing with an exceptional piece of land, and to create anything less than a sublime golf experience would have

been disappointing,” said developer Duncan Andrews, who is also the owner of the popular Dunes Golf Links on the Mornington Peninsula. “I think they have achieved a sublime golf experience and it is pleasing that this is being formally recognised in a world context.” The Cape Wickham routing has been described as “heart-pounding, starting along rocks and crashing surf, moving inland but not out of the wind, returning to ocean edge at the downhill 10th, pitchshot 11th and drivable par-4 12th, then wandering into dunes before a crescendo closing hole curving along Victoria Cove beach, which is in play at low tides.” The 18-hole rate is $150, while golfers can play all day for $195. Tee off for Hawaii International Golf Week

ichard Ellis from Pacific Golf Management has over 25 years’ experience running golf tours, international amateur and professional tournaments around the world. One of their annual events is the “Hawaii International Golf Week” played on the Big Island of Hawaii, August 20th to 27th.

Ellis says Hawaii is, without doubt, the golf resort capital of the world. The island of Hawaii, known as “The Big Island”, is a 30-minute flight from Honolulu and has many of the best courses in Hawaii, designed by some of the greatest names in golf. Graham Marsh-designed championship golf course then you take a left turn after crossing the bridge and pull up outside the fully-stocked pro shop where an attendant takes care of your golf clubs while you park the car. If, like me, you like to arrive early you can slip into the conveniently located Tees Clubhouse for a coffee, cold drink and a bite to eat before hitting the magnificent driving range and short-game practice facility. So, what can golfers visiting for the first time expect? The advice from PGA professional Mark Gibson, who runs his Exceptional Golf teaching academy at the resort, is don’t let your ego cloud your judgement. “There are five sets of tees and if you pick

the right coloured tees to suit your ability/ handicap it is very enjoyable,” Gibson said. Men can choose to play off the black (6734m), blue (6225m), white (5870m) and yellow (5538m) while the women play off the red tees (5111m) or they can challenge themselves off the yellow tees. Colleague David Ross and I, mid-range handicappers, decided to play off the white tees (slope 126) and found the course challenging, but fair. “It’s a thinking golfer’s course and definitely rewards good shots,” Gibson said. “The quality of feature shaping is excellent and Graham Marsh has designed a layout to test all golfers. “The mounding is brilliant for visually testing the player and the green surrounds are challenging.

“What I have tried to do with this golf course is to make it a thinking person’s golf course and I have tried to make it a shotmaker’s golf course and largely we have done that.” The golf course is definitely more challenging than the original design, which had more of a resort-style feel to it. The first two holes, a par-4 and a par-3, are demanding. After that, the course settles down and flows into a nice pattern with one or two more tough holes before reaching the short par-4 eighth (index 16) and shortpar-5 ninth (index 12). That gives golfers a break before heading into the back nine. The course ends with four absorbing holes – the par-5 15th (index 9), followed by a shortish par-3 (index 17), a shortish

par-4 (350m blue and 319m white) with out of bounds left and the 18th (index 10), which stretches to 416m and 399m from the blue and white tees respectively. Marsh said he wanted strong finishing holes and he has achieved that. “You really have to work hard on concentration and shot-by-shot play,” he said. “The par-5 15th is reachable in two, but if you make a slight error you can pay a severe price. On the other hand, you can make eagle so it’s potentially a two-shot swing.

“Again, the 18th (index 1) is all about getting the ball on the fairway.” If you miss the large, raised, undulating green left, right or over the back you will have your challenges making par or bogey. It didn’t bother colleague David Ross who walked off with a birdie while I had to settle for a double-bogey only because I didn’t heed Graham Marsh or Mark Gibson’s advice. “I told you it was a thinking golfer’s golf course,” Gibbo said.

“Play a poor shot at 16 and you’ll make bogey. Play a good shot and you can make birdie.

Still, I did manage 33 stableford points, which was rather pleasing considering it was my first attempt.

“The tee shot on 17, which is now 40m longer, is demanding whereas before players were taking irons from the tee. That’s not testing a player.

I can’t wait to have another crack at this challenging must-play layout where eyecatching bunkering, water hazards, swales and mounds and some devilish greens are a constant reminder to think before launching into the next tee or approach shot.

“Now players will have to make a decision about what club they use from the tee and it will have to be more than a long iron.
