Teed Up rewards tour clients with a bonus reunion event
TEED Up, one of Australia’s leading golf tours experts, have created an exciting bonus event -- The Club Challenge -- for the many thousands of golfers who have participated in their myriad trips all over the world. And judging by the success of the first staging of the 54-hole competition, played at Magenta Shores, Horizons and Pacific Dunes, on the NSW Central Coast and Port Stephens regions, and staying at the top-quality The Anchorage at Nelson Bay, The Club Challenge looks to have a bright future. The concept for the three-day, five-star golf and accommodation package taps into the travel-bonding which so often occurs on Teed Up tours and the desire for the many trip participants to have an annual competitive golf reunion. In March, Teed Up organised the inaugural Teed Up Club Challenge, and were delighted with the roll-up of about 80 golfers from eight leading Sydney and Central Coast clubs. The winning team of Mark and Michelle Bloxham, Libby Myles, Belinda and Anthony Robson and John and Fidelma Tobin came from Avondale and they won by five points from Royal Sydney and The Lakes.
Teed Up for fun: The happy Teed Up Club Challenge competitors in the inaugural event Teams of eight from Roseville (2), Monash (2), Royal Sydney, The Lakes, Avondale, Horizons, Concord and Manly competed for the impressive Club Challenge trophy. No doubt the individual golf highlights were two holes-in-one by Teed Up executive Alizah Kendler, who scored the first hole-in-one one of her career at the 150m eighth hole at Pacific Dunes which followed the first ace of the event by Anthony Robson from Avondale at the sixth hole at Horizons. This was his sixth hole in one and off a scratch handicap he had 38 points (two under par) on the two rounds at Horizons and Pacific Dunes. But the teams trophy was the main event and after the first two rounds – in which the best ball team scores
counted -- Avondale was at the top of the leaderboard with a score of 259, 10 ahead of The Lakes. The final day at Pacific Dunes saw the scoring based on the best six of each team’s eight individual efforts counting towards the final team tally with Royal Sydney tallying 184, The Lakes 182 and Avondale 177. Avondale scored 436 stableford points overall to win by five. Royal Sydney finished second on a countback from The Lakes. Teed Up will be holding the Club Challenge again in 2017 and plans to stage events in Melbourne and Brisbane under a similar format. For more information: (02) 8458 9000, www.teed-up.com •

TEE off on a ‘Remarkable’ New Zealand golf tour
Queenstown Golf Club
I
t’s the little things that make a big difference in golf. Whether it’s choosing a certain grip for your putter, the right ball for your swing speed or the best coach to hone your skills. The same applies when it comes to golf travel. Little things matter, and dealing with a ground-based tour agent means you get local information first hand. Somebody on the other end of the phone that you can trust to get things done when you’re trying to organise a party of people and ensure you get to see the best of what NZ has to
offer, whether it’s golf courses, restaurants or sightseeing. Remarkable Golf Tours (RGT) was established in Queenstown in 2007 to provide a range of golf services for visitors to New Zealand and have arranged tours for thousands of golfers from all corners of the globe. Starting with one vehicle for running daily transfers between local hotels and golf courses, RGT have expanded their vehicle fleet to cater to a range of group sizes from couples to large touring parties. Regardless of party size,
the service remains focussed on the finer details of planning that ensure a seamless golf trip. Naturally, choosing a great destination to golf in is a pretty important choice to make and when it comes to New Zealand, it simply doesn’t get better than Queenstown. The views alone are worth the airfare and the courses showcase the scenery beautifully. Whether it’s the sweeping views of Queenstown Bay from Queenstown Golf Club, The Remarkables Mountain range and Lake Wakatipu
from Jacks Point or the hilly surrounds of Arrowtown from The Hills, Millbrook or Arrowtown Golf Club, golfers have always got great views to take in. Aside from the views, it’s the also changes in style of each course that really intrigues. Each course feels very different than the last and golfers won’t feel like they play two courses even remotely similar in Queenstown. There are plenty of golf destinations that boast more courses but the variety from one to the next and the varying challenges sees groups returning to Queenstown year after year to rediscover what makes it so special for golfing. There are certainly standout courses like Jacks Point that really inspire with its stunning views and rugged, natural beauty but each course has its own charm and often the club courses silently impress even the golfing purists. Another attraction is the world-class food and wine on offer, an area where Queenstown continues to raise the bar year upon year. Central Otago established itself as a premier Pinot Noir producing region years ago but has now regarded as one of NZ’s top destinations for dining. Everything from Asian street-style food to fine NZ meats, seafood and hearty pub meals are on offer and visitors would be disappointed to find a meal less than excellent wherever they go in Queenstown. However large or small your group is, take the opportunity to contact Remarkable Golf Tours to see what they can offer you for a memorable golf trip to New Zealand. Thursday 6 October. Optional golf on the opening (2 October) and the closing (7 October) days is available at a number of the other Mornington Peninsula courses. THE COURSES: Billed as Australia’s #1 golf destination, the scenic Mornington Peninsula is well known for the number of quality golf courses ranging from coastal links to resort style layouts. Here are the courses on offer for this year’s event:
Portsea Golf Club “Portsea stimulates me. It is in every way a champion’s course.” - Peter Thomson Set amongst rolling sand dunes and coastal vegetation with spectacular views across Port Phillip Bay, the recently redesigned 18-hole layout has fast draining fairways and is kept in fantastic playing condition all year round. Following a 10-year, $20million redevelopment project, the course, clubhouse and 24-room resort facility have made the club the envy of many, and has become one of the standout “Stay and Play” facilities in the country. www.portseagolfclub.com.au
St Andrews Beach
Moonah Links (Legends)
Golfers sing high praise for this Tom Doak-designed beauty, which is rated the number 4 Public Access course in Australia. Doak’s design philosophies and the nature of the land provide a unique golfing experience with generous fairways and spectacular greens. The course is a true challenge for experienced golfers yet it is also still extremely playable and fun for social golfers. www.standrewsbeachgolf.com.au.
The Legends Course offers a friendly golfing experience for players of all ages and abilities. The course is a loop of 18 holes that generally follow the valleys through a variety of landscapes ranging from ancient Moonah woodlands to open links land. The fairways are generous and the putting surfaces gentle, but the bunkering style is bold and wild in appearance. www.moonahlinks.com.au

QUEENSLAND Paradise Palms Lush golf greens, challenging fairways, endless summer lifestyle. Paradise Palms is where the rainforest meets the reef, a tropical paradise for golfers. Situated between World Heritage Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef, Tropical North Queensland’s most iconic golf course has been given a vibrant new future. A short 20-minute drive from the tropical city of Cairns, Paradise Palms was purchased by new, local owners in 2015 who have vibrant, fresh and fun new changes planned that will give the championship course its heart back. To celebrate the recent changes 6

to Paradise Palms including course improvements and new look brand, a three-day celebration, Weekend in Paradise, is being held from 13th to 15th of May. Festivities will include three days of fun and challenging golf competitions including a Freaky Friday Golf Day on Friday 13th and an 18-hole 2Ball Best Ball competition on Saturday 14th followed by a cocktail event and presentations. On Sunday 15th, a family fun day will be held including a 9-hole family golf event in the afternoon. Family activities including food stalls, children’s entertainment and a chance to win a helicopter ride, will take place closer to the Clubhouse on the Sunday. Currently ranked within the top 100 golf courses in Australia, Paradise Palms is committed to continuing to improve
its ranking. New owners and an energetic new management team have planned a number of improvements to take place this year throughout the property. Significant changes have begun, including the reconfiguration of the course, creating two new holes while still remaining loyal to the Graham Marsh Design. Other course improvements include the installation of four hit-up nets and the redesign and refurbishment of bunkers. New Club Car golf carts fitted with Visage GPS recently arrived. To reflect the improvements to the beautifully scenic course, a vibrant new look for Paradise Palms is also rolling out. A fresh new logo and website have been designed to reflect the fun, tropical oasis and a delicious new menu can be found
in the Clubhouse. Expect to see a greater variety of golf competitions at Paradise Palms, with the first major event in years – the 2016 Qantas Golf Club Cairns Classic from the 4-7 July. This world-class golf tournament in paradise will bring the best PGA golf players from across Australia and New Zealand including 30 PGA touring professionals. Registrations are now open to more than 140 local and interstate amateurs. Paradise Palms also provides the opportunity to stay in paradise with their 4.5 star resort accommodation, irresistible pools, lush gardens and fresh, local cuisine in the restaurant and bar. Twin Waters Golf Club
Twin Waters Golf Club The Queensland Sunshine Coast’s Twin Waters golf course is genuinely spectacular, with many holes reminiscent of the traditional and natural Scottish and Irish golf courses. In fact, the eighth hole is one of the standouts because it has the green designed in line with the “road hole” at St Andrews. Internationally recognised as one of the top golf courses in Australia, Twin Waters was designed by five-time British Open champion Peter Thomson and Mike Wolveridge. The stunning setting and challenging
layout combines to produce an enjoyable game of golf for players of all levels. From the championship tees, the course measures 6183m and requires a variety of shot-making skills because of the contoured fairways. The putting surfaces are typical of links golf – large with subtle slopes. For the better player, Twin Waters is a strong, challenging course but mid- to high-handicappers can choose to play from the forward tees and have a lot of fun. The golf course offers amply wide fairways punctuated by rolling bumps and dips. There are good practice facilities with an
aquatic driving range, practice green and bunkers plus a pleasant, fully licensed clubhouse, which is open every day for coffee and lunch at reasonable prices. Twin Waters Golf Club is open to visitors and social clubs 7 days a week and offers packages for all sizes of groups. For more information: (07) 5457 2444, www.twinwatersgolfclub.com.au

levels of play. The course has undergone an $8.8 million reconstruction and was redesigned by renowned golf course architect Ross Watson. The Palms is considered a championship course rivalling some of the best golf courses in Australia. It has total length of 5904m off the championship tees, and has numerous water features and hazards. Tee placements have been designed to suit a variety of playing conditions and a diverse range of players. Nestled within century–old Cabbage Palms, The Palms golf course is a return to the traditions of the game, with distinctive holes, deep greenside bunkers and boldly contoured

Warrnambool Golf Club Warrnambool is a classically-designed course laid out between and over a massive tertiary dune system. The course offers a unique combination of exposed holes with elevated tees together with those carved into natural ti-tree-lined dunes. Located within 2km of the regional city’s CBD, it makes for an ideal destination for the dedicated golf tourist, social golfing groups or family holiday makers. The influence of the ever-present wind cannot be understated and really adds to the challenge of a layout that offers variety from one round to the next. It is perhaps this aspect which shaped the game of Warrnambool’s most famous golfing export, Marc Leishman, to the level of success he now enjoys. The course has received a good deal of attention over recent years and the installation of an integrated irrigation system, supplied with recycled water, has allowed the staff to present the course in immaculate condition.

In addition, the club has launched a unique moniker for a trio of their most challenging holes—starting from the short par-4 4th and ending on the slightly uphill dogleg 6th. Borrowing from the location’s proximity to Victoria’s Shipwreck Coast—up to18 ships have found their resting place within 2km of the club—
ONE OF AUSTRALIA’S FINEST. THE PALMS SANCTUARY COVE.
Warrnambool Golf Club has named this menacing trio of holes as “Shipwreck Bend”, with the warning that these holes can easily “wreck” a good round by players of any level. Standing on the tee of the imposing 4th hole (complete with a ship’s anchor guarding the tee box), one must be sure to avoid the large waste bunker on the right side, lest you be faced with either a lost ball, or a very difficult approach shot. Similar hazards are apparent on both the 5th and 6th holes, as finding the fairways is paramount to success on these holes. There are many holes along the course which offer risk/reward options, stunning views and challenging golf. In fact, the quality of golf on this course goes beyond the typical “country course” feel, and the course would not feel out of place among many of Melbourne’s great golfing areas, notably the Mornington Peninsula. So if you’ve never played at Warrnambool, we recommend you be sure to add it to your list. A well-stocked Pro Shop enables club professional Craig Bonney and his friendly staff to cater for all your equipment and apparel needs. PA R A D I S E FOR GOLFERS
Rich River Golf Club
Rich River Golf Club Rich River Golf Club is a mainstay for the Inside Golf team whenever we travel the Murray. The facility features two very impressive 18-hole championship courses, the East and the West. They’ve been developed over the years to become one of regional Australia’s premier golfing venues, where golfers love the rolling fairways, carefully tended greens and towering eucalyptus. The West Course has traditional treelined fairways with tricky, small greens that take the serious player on a thoughtprovoking and challenging 6,183m journey. The East Course, which had a major transformation after a redesign by Peter Thomson in 1998, features large greens, wide fairways and those famous Thomson bunkers which really keep you thinking about your strokes. Course length is 6,131m.
Tee times are available seven days a week, with services including golf carts, pro shop, equipment hire and a beverage cart for a quick refresher. The 12th on the West is one of the most difficult holes on the course. A strong dogleg-right, it’s critical to hit the fairway in just the right spot (hint: Fairway metal or iron off the tee is often a good bet). Your second shot requires a good solid strike over Howards Lake to reach the green, which is gently sloped from front to back. A par on this hole is always a good score. The 18th on the East course is a monster at 532m. Be sure to avoid the fairway bunker on the left from the tee, as well as the fairway bunkers on your second shot (80 meters short of the green). With water down the left of the fairway, and a green surrounded by bunkers, it’s a very challenging hole.
James Maiden Bistro is locally famous for the magnificent views of the golf course, and for the mouth-watering choices on the lunch and dinner menu. Premium Australian and New Zealand wines and local and imported beer feature too. You can also drop into the bistro for a continental or cooked breakfast, or for a quick snack from midday. Then there’s the Coffee Shop, where you can settle down on the terrace with an expertly brewed espresso coffee and a sweet treat that’s been freshly prepared by the in-house pastry chef. There’s also the Sports Bar and the busy Spike Bar where you can also refuel with hot or cold snacks including healthy sandwiches and fruit salads. The deluxe accommodation has been attractively refurbished, with privacy and seclusion ensuring your own space to relax after golf. There’s a great choice of
rooms too, for couples, families and small groups. 40 spacious and airy standard suites have a king split bed in the bedroom and single bed in the lounge room. The 22 deluxe rooms are rated 4-star, and feature a queen bed. If you’re travelling with a small group, a large and fully selfcontained apartment can accommodate up to 7 people with 3 bedrooms, a welcoming lounge/dining area, 2 bathrooms and 3 toilets. There are so many leisure options here: two outdoor pools, a spa, gym equipment, three bowling greens, three croquet courses and nine tennis courts. Nelson Bay Golf Club
Nelson Bay Golf Club Nelson Bay Golf Club has for many years been one of the Hunter Valley’s most popular courses. The 27-hole championship layout is set among the native trees with an abundance of wildlife such as kangaroos, wallabies and native birds. It has a reputation for being one of the most public access friendly courses in NSW and for good reason - it offers a variety of exciting challenges in an immaculate setting. One of the standout holes is the 490m par-5 12th, a tight, bushland-bordered bender that makes its way up a long hill. Accuracy is key here, so pick your landing zones carefully.
underway, but the temporary clubhouse is working well with full facilities. Membership at Nelson Bay Golf Club is currently available for all playing categories as well as Social Membership. The current membership promotion for new members who join before May 31, 2016 will receive 13 months membership for the price of the normal 12 months ($850). “Kangaroo Encounters” are now available at Nelson Bay Golf Club where you can experience, photograph, enjoy and learn whilst walking amongst wild Eastern Grey Kangaroos and other unique Australian wildlife. Plans for a new clubhouse at Nelson Bay, following the last year’s fire are well
Moss Vale (Dormie House)
Moss Vale (Dormie House) Moss Vale golf course is regarded as one of the prettiest and challenging courses in country NSW and while you are only 90 minutes’ drive from the Sydney CBD, you will feel like you’re a world away in the relaxed and peaceful Southern Highlands. The 18-Hole Championship Golf Course is a par-71, 5805m (Mens tees), and Par -73, 5300m (women’s tees). A number of twists and turns, creek crossings and deceptive greens, make the course a true test. The creek which runs through the course has to be crossed 12 times during the round. From the clubhouse, the Moss Vale layout appears hilly, but after the opening 5 holes, it levels out and heads into the quiet countryside. Moss Vale Golf Club was founded in
TRUEMANS COTTAGES
1902 and designed in its current location and layout by Carnegie Clark. The current course record is 66. The environment is also the perfect location to work on all aspects of your golf game at the club’s two-day golf school, run by AAA-rated Australian PGA professional Robert Kennedy. There is also accommodation on-site at Dormie House. If you are after a golfing getaway to the Southern Highlands, Dormie House has a wide range of attractive “play and stay” accommodation packages on offer. Links Kennedy Bay Barnbougle and Lost Farm in Tasmania.
Western Australia The Links Kennedy Bay If you go to Western Australia to play golf, make sure The Links Kennedy Bay is on your short list. It’s a wonderful golfing experience and one you won’t forget in a hurry. The Links Kennedy Bay might not have a large pretentious clubhouse, but what it does have is a true links golf course of the highest quality. Little wonder it’s been rated the third best public access course in Australia behind
Chris Gray, the former Australian amateur champion and winner of many professional events in Australia and abroad, said The Links Kennedy Bay, managed by Peter Whittle of Prime Golf, was “special and unique”. “To play The Links Kennedy Bay successfully you need to be able to control your ball by hitting it low and high when needed,” Gray said. “We get a bit of wind here so hit it low into the wind and high downwind. “The fairways are quite generous, but there are a lot of pot bunkers (115) so watch out for them. They are only small but
they tend to swallow the balls up quite a bit.”
is a great hole. It only has a tiny green with bunkers and swales and can be tricky.”
Gray lists the par-4 fifth the toughest on the course. It’s 417m from the black tee box, 410m (blue), 382m (white) and 355m (red).
The beautifully manicured course, which runs alongside the vast blue water of the Indian Ocean, is a delight to play off the white tees.
“There are bunkers down the fairways so it’s quite tight to get through those,” he said.
Still anyone up for the challenge, mentally and physically, should play it off the tips. The cost is $50 walking or $75 with cart.
The short par-4 12th (307m off the white tees) is a risk-reward hole.
Visitors are welcome to play every day and hungry golfers can take advantage of the club’s full menu.
“You can drive it downwind, but there is trouble around the green,” he said. “Most people lay-up and wedge it in. “The par-3s are great and some of the best around. The 123m 12th named Wee Tap

from a wedge to a seven-iron depending on the pin position. “If there’s one shot you need around here’ it’s a good short game,” Breuker said. “A lot of greens are elevated so you are playing a lot of uphill chip shots, but that is becoming easier now due to the fairways maturing and the greens starting to soften after five years of maturity. “It’s a typical Marsh design in that if you hit the ball long the fairways narrow, but the average distance off the tee has generous landing areas,” Breuker said. The 202m par-3 17th from the tiger tees is challenging and a definite feature hole. From the members’ tees it’s 178m, the public tees 165m and the ladies tees 118m. “When you stand on the tee it’s a very elevated green with a drop off to the right side,” Breuker explained. “It’s long and visually pleasing.”
Kalgoorlie Golf Course
Kalgoorlie Golf Course
When you book your golf trip to Perth, make sure you factor in Kalgoorlie Golf Course because the sublime GrahamMarsh-designed layout is one you’ll definitely want to tick off your bucket list. The first thing you notice about this layout of wild beauty is the magnificent colours – red, green and blue. The red dirt butts up against the green manicured fairways with the blue sky as the backdrop. Variety and fine conditioning define this
work of art. From the tee boxes, the course looks intimidating but it has numerous tee positions and is considerably more forgiving than many others you’ll play in your travels. From the tips, the course stretches to 6768m, but off the shorter public tees it’s 835 metres shorter. Full-grown trees on this desert-style course are as rare as freeway civility, but the first 14 holes boast a variety of trees, though they rarely come into play.
On the final four holes, the course is virtually treeless though the fairways dip and rise somewhat. Club professional Paul Breuker said Kalgoorlie prided itself on its greens, which clock in at between 9 and 11 on the Stimpmeter. “Graham Marsh has designed big, flowing greens which allow five or six pin positions.” Many greens are tiered with the par-5 ninth a lengthy, three-tier roller-coaster. An approach shot here could be anything
Visitors are always welcome and can walk ($55 midweek and $65 on weekends) or ride. Cart hire is $45 for 18 holes. The club’s restaurant and bar is open for business from Wednesdays to Sundays. “We recommend everyone should play this golf course,” Breuker said. Inside Golf did and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. For more information: (08) 9026 2626, www.kalgoorliegolfcourse.com, golf@kalgoorliegolfcourse.com

Golden Oldies Golf Festival Vintage Sports & Leisure Ltd (VSL) have announced that the second Golden Oldies Golf Festival will be held in the Hunter Valley region of NSW from the 18th to 24th of September. The week-long event will be based at the Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley and played at the Par-71 Hunter Valley Golf Club, set amongst the Hunter Valley’s world famous vineyards. The festival is a fourround event with the first round being a Par-3 competition. Tournament Director Roger Carroll said, “We tried the Par-3 day as an add-on for the first time last year and it was hugely popular. So this year we have incorporated it into the four-round event. “Also we are incorporating into the rounds some fun aspects that won’t detract from the normal golf. At the very least it will make the prize giving quite amusing.” Away from the golf course wine tasting and tours of the Hunter Valley region are available. “With everyone except the locals staying at the Crowne Plaza we know the socialising away
from the golf course will be a highlight. ”On top of that it is a beautiful area with plenty to do, some fantastic restaurants and if you want to play golf on the rest day there are a couple of outstanding courses nearby” said Carroll. The packages include six-nights’ accommodation at the Crowne Plaza, breakfast, four rounds of golf, carts and two functions with open bars. Packages start at $1325.
