Now with China Southern’s direct morning flights departing Sydney on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, you can get to Shenzhen in 9.5 hours and (after a 40km 40-minute bus ride) be teeing it up at Mission Hills about an hour later. Because China Southern flies direct to Shenzhen, its economy ticket prices are cheaper than any of its competitors. In May, China Southern was offering non-stop return flights for $877 -- more than $400 cheaper than Virgin and $200 less than Singapore (both hours-longer stopover services). Three leading Australian golf tour operators such as Melbourne’s China Golf Experience (CGE) and China Golf Travel along with Teed Up in Sydney take hundreds of golf-tourists to China each year and they all want to play the superb Mission Hills courses. Kevin Davidson, a Director of CGE, was impressed to hear from Inside Golf that

China Southern Airlines’ direct flights from Sydney have proven so popular, efficient and good value. And he was even more impressed to learn that China Southern is planning to start a similar service from Melbourne and is looking seriously at developing golf-tour package flights to Shenzhen to streamline golfers to Mission Hills much more quickly. “We would be delighted to discuss and assist with the practicalities of golf tours to Mission Hills Shenzhen with China Southern, which is a world-class airline,” Davidson told Inside Golf, after escorting more than 100 golfers to Mission Hills in April. With a variety of tour operators offering good-value ground-only prices of around $2000 for five-days of allinclusive golf at any of the 12 courses including five-star accommodation at Mission Hills with breakfasts, the cheaper China Southern flights should
make Mission Hills even more alluring. In April, Inside Golf was the only golf publication to be part of a group of media and travel agents hosted in Shenzhen by China Southern Airlines and the Culture Sports and Tourism Administration of Shenzhen Municipality to experience the non-stop flight, the exciting attractions of Shenzhen and the incomparable Mission Hills. The Airbus A330-300 used on the route features 284 seats with four in first class, 24 in business, 48 in premium economy and 208 in economy. Inside Golf got to play one course at Mission Hills and chose the original Jack Nicklaus designed World Cup course which is about 6500m and par 72. It was opened in 1994 and used for the 1995
World Cup. It was in excellent condition with smooth, but not-quick greens and an Aussie 14 handicapper could really enjoy it with plenty of bailout spots to allow you to chip and putt for pars. The top-of-the-range membership at Mission Hills is the Chartered Diamond Membership which costs about $50,000 a year plus green fees of about $150 to $200 and allows access to all 12 courses with exclusive use of the Pete Dye layout. So with a variety of Australian tour operators offering good-value groundonly prices of around $2000 for five-days of all-inclusive golf at 10 of the 12 courses and five-star accommodation at Mission Hills with breakfasts, the cheaper China Southern Airlines flights should make Mission Hills even more alluring.

The Murray River stretches almost three thousand kilometres between Victoria and New South Wales, from the Snowy Mountains to where it meets the sea at Encounter Bay. Dotted along the river, golf courses have been designed by some of the world’s legends and as a result offer a variety of challenges and experiences for golfers to savour. The 18-hole Old Course features a clever design with narrow, treelined fairways sure to put any golfer to the test, while the West Course has wider fairways and larger greens with many more slopes. There are several feature holes on the course, particularly the third. While only measuring 355m in length, this is rated the most difficult on the course. Â It is a dogleg-right with large gum trees protecting the right side and a deep stormwater drain crossing the fairway 30 metres short of the green. The
green is long and narrow with bunkers both sides of the green, requiring a precise approach. Players of all levels will enjoy the challenge that the course has to offer. Murray Downs Golf and Country Club over a lake, which follows the hole all the way to the green where bunkers guard the left side of the narrow target. The couch fairways are superbly tended and groomed, while the bent greens are generally large, undulating and very fast with thoughtful tee positions and pin placements. Rich River Golf Club is a mainstay for the Inside Golf team whenever we travel the Murray. The facility features two very impressive 18-hole championship courses, the East and the West. They’ve been developed over the years to become one of regional Australia’s premier golfing venues, where golfers love the rolling fairways, carefully tended greens and towering eucalyptus. The West Course has traditional treelined fairways with tricky, small greens that take the serious player on a thoughtprovoking and challenging 6,183m journey. The East Course, which had a major transformation after a redesign by
Peter Thomson in 1998, features large greens, wide fairways and those famous Thomson bunkers which really keep you thinking about your strokes. Course length is 6,131m. Tee times are available seven days a week, with services including golf carts, pro shop, equipment hire and a beverage cart for a quick refresher. The 12th on the West is one of the most difficult holes on the course. A strong dogleg-right, it’s critical to hit the fairway in just the right spot (hint: Fairway metal or iron off the tee is often a good bet). Your second shot requires a good solid strike over Howards Lake to reach the green, which is gently sloped from front to back. A par on this hole is always a good score. The 18th on the East course is a monster at 532m. Be sure to avoid the fairway bunker on the left from the tee, as well as the fairway bunkers on your second shot (80 meters short of the green). With water down the left of the fairway, and a green surrounded by bunkers, it’s a very challenging hole. James Maiden Bistro is locally famous for the magnificent views of the golf course, and for the mouth-watering choices on the lunch and dinner menu. Premium Australian and New Zealand wines and local and imported beer feature too. You can also drop into the bistro for a continental or cooked breakfast, or for a quick snack from midday. Then there’s the Coffee Shop, where you can settle down
Rich River Golf Club on the terrace with an expertly brewed espresso coffee and a sweet treat that’s been freshly prepared by the in-house pastry chef. There’s also the Sports Bar and the busy Spike Bar where you can also refuel with hot or cold snacks including healthy sandwiches and fruit salads. The deluxe accommodation has been attractively refurbished, with privacy and seclusion ensuring your own space to
relax after golf. There’s a great choice of rooms too, for couples, families and small groups. 40 spacious and airy standard suites have a king split bed in the bedroom and single bed in the lounge room. The 22 deluxe rooms are rated 4-star, and feature a queen bed. If you’re travelling with a small group, a large and fully selfcontained apartment can accommodate up to 7 people with 3 bedrooms, a
welcoming lounge/dining area, 2 bathrooms and 3 toilets. There are so many leisure options here: two outdoor pools, a spa, gym equipment, three bowling greens, three croquet courses and nine tennis courts. More information: (03) 5481 3333, www.richriver.com.au golfpackages@richriver.com.au

No destination for holiday golf offers such easy access, whether you take your car or fly in to the Sunshine Coast Airport at Maroochydore you can still hope to play somewhere on the day you arrive.
Most golf clubs spare no expense in creating well-maintained golf courses with plenty of space for visiting golfers to play.

A popular pastime is browsing the chic boutiques, restaurants and cafes along Noosa’s Hastings Street.
Now the Sunshine Coast has something more.
Many of the Sunshine Coast golf clubs tend to consider the menu as important as the scorecard, the fashion accessories in the pro shop as mandatory as golf balls and one can expect friendly service.
E
Enjoy the Noosa country drive and experience hinterland villages including Cooroy, Pomona and Kin Kin.
Another is taking a stroll through the Noosa National Park to view the stunning five surfing points, which has seen Noosa being named the latest National Surfing Reserve.
All the golf courses, many designed by architects with international reputations, offer excellent standards and there is always a warm welcome.

The Sunshine Coast has always had a reputation for quality – whether in food, golden beaches, accommodation, markets, shopping, fishing and hiking Mount Coolum or the Glass House Mountains.
More than 30 golf courses – ranging from alluring nine-hole layouts to 18-hole captivating championship courses – offer countless, changing challenges.
Maroochy River Golf Club and Maleny Golf Club have entered the myriad big name golf courses and, like the more established layouts, are receiving professional acclaim.

We have the support of some of the best golf clubs on the Sunshine Coast and all offer consistent standards all year-round. We even have an experienced tour operator, who can help put together a golfing itinerary and transport you from your accommodation to your golf course of choice. But where to start and finish? Well, less than an hour from Brisbane Airport is beautiful Bribie Island where two first-rate courses await. Spend a couple of days there before heading for the scenic town of Maleny on the Blackall Range overlooking the Sunshine Coast hinterland in Queensland. Here you can play the brand-new Maleny golf course and spend a night or two at nearby Spicers Tamarind Retreat. After that, make a beeline for the heart of the Sunshine Coast and play golf at Caloundra, Headland, Maroochy River, Twin Waters, Mt Coolum and Nambour golf courses. UST a short drive from the Sunshine Coast Airport at Maroochydore is Mount Coolum Golf Club, which is one of the most picturesque settings to play golf. Nestled at the foot of spectacular Mt Coolum with the rock providing a breathtaking backdrop on most tees and fairways, Mount Coolum is an extremely friendly and welcoming club. So it isn’t surprising that more than 60,000 rounds are played here each year. An added bonus is the layout is relatively flat, which makes it a comfortable walk. The front and back nine holes are very different in character. The course consists of six par-5s, six par4s and six par 3s, however, on the back nine there are four par-5s and four-par-3s. Golfers of all levels will enjoy the challenge along with the beauty and the abundance of natural flora and fauna. Perhaps the biggest challenge is the water hazards that come into play on 12 holes. Combine all this with the long, narrow fairways and you have a true test of golf on your hands. The club’s general manager Sharon Purnell said the condition of the golf course was its best advertisement. “We have members and visitors constantly commenting on how well the course is playing and how professional and friendly the staff is,” she said. Mount Coolum Golf Club
houses and was the ideal place to hold a corporate event or trade day. The club’s facilities include a fullystocked pro shop with motorised carts, retail and hire equipment as well as the latest in men’s and women’s golf fashion. Club pro Stephen Jenkins is a AAA PGA professional and Level 3 coaching accredited. The air-conditioned clubhouse has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with a large deck overlooking the course and spectacular Mount Coolum. The Bistro is open for lunch Wednesday to Sunday and the bar facilities and gaming lounge is open seven days a week. Golfers can relax on the balcony after a game and enjoy lunch with views over Australia’s second largest rock – Mt Coolum. “It’s all part of one of life’s great golfing experiences.” Ms Purnell said. The club’s philosophy is to ensure members, guests and visitors receive the highest level of service and experience when attending the club or on the course. Mount Coolum GC has social play on Monday, Friday and Sunday and offer discounts to social bookings of 10 or more players. The club welcomes visitors and guests to play and enjoy golf in the relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
Ms Purnell said the golf club was located close to various resorts and accommodation

Photo courtesy of David Dafourq of EQ Photography. NESTLED within the verdant hills of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Maleny Golf Club’s quality, nine-hole course provides visitors with a picturesque, Scottishinspired “golf-as-it-began” playing experience. From the elevated first tee, players are presented with a panoramic view of the course and an ideal vantage point from which to assess the golfing challenge ahead. The Graham Papworth-designed golf course, comprised of six par-4s, two par3s and one par-5, is a relatively short 2618m off the white tees. However, players will encounter some stern tests of golf along the way, including a penal kikuyu rough for those who stray from the well-defined fairways.
After negotiating the water hazard downhill to the right and testing twotiered green on the 311m par-4 second, players arrive at the signature par-3 third offering a 200m approach shot for those keen to challenge themselves from the championship tee.
McCombe’s diligence in transforming what was once a weed-ridden old dairy farm into a quality golf course have been praised by all who play it. In fact, he received the superintendents’ achievement award at the Queensland Golf Industry Awards earlier this year.
Papworth’s innovative design takes full advantage of some excellent natural assets – gentle rolling hills, well-drained volcanic soil, existing kikuyu pastures, surrounding rainforest and some wetland.
This prestigious award complemented the Queensland Government’s Sports Volunteer of the Year award received last year by club president Dr Max Whitten in recognition of his leadership, commitment, drive and enterprise in facilitating construction of the course.
The course has been built to a high standard by a team of dedicated volunteers under the direction of course superintendent Mick McCombe using the latest agronomic technology and knowhow to construct the Tiff Dwarf greens.
The club, which only opened to the public in July last year, has cleverly combined two shipping containers to establish a rustic temporary HQ which adds to the overall visitor experience.

The mid-rise 50-apartment accommodation caters for all golfers from small groups to couples through to larger groups.
Bribie Island Golf Club Golfers who reside in southeast Queensland often say: “We’re going overseas” when visiting Bribie Island.
as luck would have it, Fairways Golf and Beach Retreat is literally on Bribie Island Golf Club’s doorstep.
That’s because the island, located an hour from Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, is separated from the mainland by the Bribie Island Bridge that spans 831.4m.
IF you haven’t yet experienced Bribie Island Golf Club then put it on your bucket list immediately.
Once you cross the bridge, you are met with captivating views of Pumicestone Passage and your stress levels drop as you prepare for a couple of rounds of golf.
Built on the natural sand dunes, Bribie Island Golf Club is a highly rated, members-based golf course, which is in top condition all year-round.
Bribie Island has two of Queensland’s finest sandbelt courses – Bribie Island golf course and Pacific Harbour golf course.
The 18-hole championship layout (6203m) offers the opportunity to play a sandbelt-style course while enjoying the sub-tropical weather year-round. Each hole is uniquely different at Bribie Island – the fairways and greens thoughtfully framed by trees and bunkers.
You’ll want to play both so it’s best to find the right accommodation and,
The native bushland and sandy lies off the fairways accentuate the need
to position your golf ball on the wellmanicured fairways and greens. The 18th hole is a great finishing hole, which leads to the clubhouse and outdoor deck. The outdoor area is a popular gathering place for golfers after a round. Consistently rated in Australia’s top100 public access golf courses and recently rated in Australia’s top-10 most underrated golf courses, Bribie Island will not disappoint. The club’s motto “It’s Worth the Drive” is apt. The club is open every day while Café on 18 is open for lunch daily and dinner Tuesdays through Friday nights. The club also offers breakfast and Saturday night dinners by arrangement and subject to numbers.
Fairways has everything to make your stay memorable including spacious and comfortable 3.5 star lodgings, fantastic views from the rooftop and BBQ area, heated swimming pool and even its own putt-putt golf course. They also have transport options to and from Pacific Harbour golf course, which is only 15 minutes away. So relax, focus on your golf and the essential festivities without the worry of driving. After the round, golfers can enjoy a BBQ by the pool, on the rooftop or drop in next door to Bribie Island Golf Club for dinner. A play-and-stay package at Fairways is a memorable life experience you will not forget in a hurry and it will leave you for the thirst to do it all again next year. Fairways Golf and Beach Retreat IF you took up golf largely for the challenge then Pacific Harbour Golf and Country Club belongs at the top of your “must-play” list. The Ross Watson-designed championship golf course is a serious golfer’s dream. Watson describes the course as “risk-and-reward”, which works well for championship, resort and club golf. The bunkering at Pacific Harbour is a standout feature.
Beach bunkers merge with lake edges with natural grasses, reed and sedges. As well as wetlands, bunkering is the dominant feature, in many cases framed with native grass “eyebrows”. “We have over 200 bunkers so the key to success is you have to be straight off the tee,” said golf operations manager Zac Chipperfield. “It’s a thinking golfer’s course. You can’t just stand up and hit driver on every hole.
Pacific Harbour Golf and Country Club “You have to pick your lines and try to land your golf ball in the right areas of the fairways and greens.” Most holes have a range of play options. The short holes (par-3s) are exceptional with the 17th having the longest bunker in the Southern Hemisphere. “From the back tees the hole is 205m and the bunker on the right is 190m long,” Chipperfield said. Water is at every turn with reflective lakes, the ocean in the background and
even the clubhouse is “floating” over a lake and aquatic driving range. Before or after a round golfers can enjoy casual dining at the Deck Café and Restaurant, which is open Monday to Sunday from 10am-6pm. MORE: Pacific Harbour Golf and Country Club. Maroochy River golf course THE new kid on the block is arguably the most challenging. The “block” is the Sunshine Coast and the “kid” is Maroochy River golf course at Bli Bli just five kilometres from the Sunshine Coast Airport. Opened just over a year ago, the Graham Marsh-designed championship layout has captured the imagination of the golfing public.
tee positions. A tip: Check the wind before teeing off. If the breeze is up and you are a male, you might want to consider playing from the white tees, which will give you all the golf you want if you are a mid- to highhandicapper. From the “whites” the course measures 5648m, from the “blues” 5918m and from the “blacks” 6441m.
In the past six months, there have been 40,000 rounds played and the course has handled the foot and cart traffic with ease.
The course is 1129m shorter (5312m) from the yellow tees. From the red tees it’s 5010m.
“We are receiving a lot of positive feedback about the new layout and clubhouse facilities,” said the club’s general manager Charlie McGill.
Low single figure markers might want more and play from the tips.
“The members love the new facility and visiting golfers regularly return to challenge themselves on a wonderful layout and enjoy the modern clubhouse facilities.” Since opening, Maroochy River has had its Slope rating adjusted to 126 from the black tees, 124 from the blue and 120 from the white and red markers. Besides many picturesque holes, Maroochy River has more than its share of feasts for the eyes including wonderful vistas of Mt Coolum, Mt Ninderry and Buderim. Once you’ve paid your green fees head for the well-equipped driving range and a short-game practice area for a brief warm-up. Then, when you arrive at the first tee, you’ll discover there are five different
While there are no tree-lined fairways, there is sufficient water and wetlands to keep golfers’ honest. Most of the water hazards are directional, which means they won’t swallow a lot of golf balls unless you hit it sideways. Many of the greens have open approaches and gentle contours that make the course a joy to walk and play. During a round, golfers cross six bridges while the bunkering (there are 79 bunkers) is eye-catching and add to the layout’s aesthetics. From the tees, the bunkers appear intimidating but most fairway bunkers can be avoided thanks to generously wide fairways. The par-5 fifth hole has 11 bunkers – seven fairways traps and four guarding the green.
Queensland Golf Performance Centre Maroochy River is definitely a risk-andreward golf course and that means you don’t have to hit driver off the tee on every par-4 and par-5. The par-4 sixth and the par-5 seventh are prime examples at 266m and 453m respectively from the white tees. Still, the eyes of the big-hitters will light up as they eye off an eagle or birdie, but birdies are possible by choosing the safer approach. After golf, there is a restaurant and a separate bar with tables for dining. The clubhouse offers all the comforts required and is capable of holding multiple functions (corporate days, weddings and members’ functions) simultaneously.

playing from the forward tees.
It has a distinctive links-style atmosphere about it as it threads its way among the humps, bumps and hollows.
The Twin Waters layout offers generous landing areas and bail out areas around the greens.
It’s a place with soul.
What you will more than likely say as you leave the 18th green at Twin Waters is “more, please!”.
The course exacts its toll for the early favours, but slowly builds into difficulty and interest on both the front and back nine.
It’s that good … and it’s one of the reasons why the PGA of Australia takes the Holden Scramble national final there every year.
Both nines are equally strong with just a five-metre difference in length – 3089m and 3094m respectively.
Twin Waters is always in pristine condition and fits the classic description – “tranquil and unpretentious”. There’s a real comfortable, polished feel about the Peter Thomson and Michael Wolveridge-designed golf course, which is located less than five kilometres from
From the championship tees, the course measures 6183 metres (5835m white tees and 5260m red) and requires great shotmaking variety because of the contoured fairways and large greens. For the better player, it’s a strong, challenging course, but mid- to highhandicappers have the advantage of
Sometimes you will watch your ball sail into the distance over a bush-covered hillock at the side of the fairway and think the worst. But you will have a good chance of finding it and still have a shot to the green because those grass hillocks are often like islands and have landing areas beyond them. Concentration is critical on the putting surfaces because the greens are typical of links golf – large with subtle slopes. The eighth hole (index 1) is just one of the standouts because it has the green designed in line with the “road hole”
at St Andrews. The water on the right is intimidating and is a definite “no-go zone”. The 18th is a suitably testing par-5 and it’s a hole where many contests have been won … and lost. Twin Waters Golf Club is open to visitors and social clubs 7 days a week and offers packages for all sizes of groups. Twin Waters has a unique practice facility. Caloundra Golf Club ASIDE from being a beautiful, oldfashioned parkland golf course, Caloundra Golf Club holds a unique position on the Sunshine Coast because it’s just a short distance from famed Kings Beach. Opened in 1951 as a nine-hole layout and extended to 18 holes in 1966, the golf course is set in a tranquil and peaceful environment and offers a pleasant combination of ponds and wellestablished trees and interesting strategy decisions off the tees. It’s here where visiting club golfers feel right at home as the golf course is very much a product of its natural surroundings. Of course, the challenge of the traditional Australian bushland course is
another reason why the club is popular with members and visitors alike. The golf course is 5987m off the championship tees (5356m for women) and features a number of tight, tree-lined holes that make accuracy and the ability to shape the golf ball off the tee very important. The layout is a balance between risk and reward. You can smash a driver off the tee or hit a positional iron, go for the green in two heroic shots or throw a wedge to the superb greens.
most greens. Caloundra golf course’s final three holes are extremely demanding – just what you want from a championship layout. The 16th (353m) has an index of eight while the 17th (369m) and the 18th (393m) are indexed four and two respectively. If you require one birdie from the final three holes to win a title, you are going to have to work very hard.
There are five par-3s and they are a real test with none measuring less than 145m.
Caloundra Golf Club, which can lay claim to producing former British Open champion Ian Baker-Finch, has produced numerous state and national champions.
If that is not enough, there is water on five holes and bunkers protect

Headland Golf Club JUST four kilometres from the golden beaches of Mooloolaba, a wonderful seafood and accommodation precinct, is Headland Golf Club. Perched high up the hill at Buderim, the well-appointed clubhouse commands sweeping vistas over the par-72 championship golf course and across to Mooloolaba’s skyline and beaches. Popular with locals and visitors alike, Headland has a mature look about it, which isn’t surprising as it dates back to 1955. The clubhouse is much more modern than it appears with a welcoming entrance, attractive, modern bar and dining area that leads out to a large deck while the 6086m (5409m for women) golf course offers the charm and charisma of a classic layout.
Earlier this year the club upgraded and extended the pro shop.
Still, the gently undulating layout is no pushover.
It’s almost doubled in size and while you won’t get lost navigating your way around the modern shop you might lose track of time because there is plenty of gear to touch and feel.
The slope rating is 128 off the black tees for men and 129 off the red tees for ladies courtesy of greenside-only bunkers, treelined fairways and five water hazards.
The club’s general manager Ben Dobson said the course always presents well. “It’s in fantastic condition all year round,” he said. In recent years, new cart paths have been constructed and three of the layout’s five dams have been enlarged adding to the aesthetic appeal of the golf course as well as all important water storage. The condition of the tees, fairways and excellent greens make Headland a pleasurable golf course to play.
Off the back tees, it’s one of the most challenging courses on the Sunshine Coast but, depending on your skill level, you have the option of playing from a tee block that suits your game. For nature lovers, Headland is also a flora and fauna reserve. At Headland Golf Club, membership is almost at capacity and to introduce the next generation of golfers to the game, children and grandchildren of full members receive free junior membership.
The club has a highly successful “Starting Women in Golf” (SWING) program, which was instigated by former golf director Laurel Opray. Beginner women golfers meet every Tuesday for nine holes and coffee, assisted by current members and with regular coaching sessions. This is a pathway for these golfers into membership. Green fees are $50pp for 18 holes. Group discounts for 12 or more players apply. The club has a Sunday and Monday special – four golfers can play using two golf carts after 9am on Sundays and all day on Mondays for $200. That’s $50pp. Open competitions for golf club members with a GA handicap on Tuesday

Tel (07) 5444-5800. proshop@headlandgolfclub.com.au www.headlandgolfclub.com.au THE rainforest setting at Nambour Golf Club is undoubtedly one of the most picturesque on the Sunshine Coast. Built on the side of a state forest, the 5178m par-68 golf course features a number of serene rainforest walkways. “Don’t be fooled by the relative shortness of the course,” said the club general manager Steve McMahon. “The course is challenging. It’s a course
that calls on just about every shot in the book.”
varying in length from 120m to 195m, but the 356m par-4 third hole is a ripper.
“It’s $30pp in a shared golf cart on those days.”
Nambour is an undulating golf course so there are many hanging lies where the ball is above or below your feet.
The hole has a slight dogleg to the right with a rainforest jungle to the right of the landing area.
“Saturday is the only day when it’s difficult for non-members to get a game.”
That’s because the course designer laid out the 18 holes by simply relying on little more than the land’s natural contours.
The rainforest hazard extends along much of the fairway and a huge strategically-placed pot bunker is on the right.
The golf course has its share of water hazards with four dams while the lofty tees offer spectacular views. They also offer difficult shots to tree-lined fairways and often hard-to-hit elevated greens. To score well, one has to rely on good course management. “You have to be careful where you drive your ball and you can’t hit driver on every par-4 and par-5,” McMahon said. Nambour has six challenging par-3s
A solitary palm in the centre of another bunker guards any approach long and left. McMahon said the club, which celebrates its 90 anniversary this month, welcomes visitors. “The best days for visitors are Mondays, Thursdays and Friday afternoons because that when we have our special rates,” he said.
Golfers walking can play unlimited golf Monday to Thursday, Fridays after 12 noon and Sundays after 11am for $25. Alternatively, golfers can play unlimited golf after 2pm each day and pay just $15. Noosa Springs Golf & Spa Resort THE most difficult thing about visiting Noosa Springs Golf & Spa Resort is deciding just what to do and in which order to do it. Of course, if you are a golfer – male or female – it’s easy. Just head for the first tee of the magnificent 18-hole, par-72 championship golf course and prepare yourself for a golfing treat. Designed by Graham Papworth, this 6180m gem is rated one of Australia’s finest golf courses. It winds its way through lush bushland and if you are lucky you’ll catch glimpses of kangaroos and other native wildlife as you take in the beautiful surroundings. That’s one of the reasons it’s hosted the Australian PGA’s qualifying school tournament for the past couple of years.

Do the ladies opt for Noosa Springs’ worldclass spa where they can relax with a full body massage, use the premium thermal suite, or choose a facial or sugar scrub? Unsure what’s for you? Just ask one of the spa’s highly qualified therapists. Maybe they would prefer a set of tennis with friends or, if they are ambitious, why not take on one of Noosa Springs’ pros. Still, another round of golf is always an option. Of course, for a golfer, there is nothing

In the evening, everybody can enjoy the cafe, restaurant and bars where Noosa Springs’ staff will happily serve up the finest food, wines and beers. And next morning they can work off the excess calories in the resort’s wellequipped fitness centre, which includes a heated 25m swimming pool. IF you love good golf played in a relaxed environment surrounded by beautiful flora and fauna then Noosa Golf Club is a must-visit, must-play golf course. For 80 years, golfers have enjoyed the tranquillity of the golf course’s natural bushland setting where kangaroos, koalas and a variety of bird species congregate. Now the club is promoting the golf course as “Noosa’s only nature reserve with a golf course attached”. Apparently, more than 60 bird species, some migratory, have been spotted on the golf course including Spoonbills, Kingfishers and King Parrots. The club rests comfortably under the gaze of Mount Cooroy in the picturesque hinterland town of Cooroy just a short 22-kilometre drive from Noosa and the popular northern beaches. “Our relaxed ambience and location in the Noosa hinterland makes us the perfect venue for a round of golf to complete your holiday experience or for your social, corporate or charity golf day,” said the club’s general manager Wayne Patston. “The layout is not a conventional nine plus nine.

true and fast greens are a reasonable size and a good target.
“We have members who have been here for over 30 years and say the course is as good as it’s ever been,” said the club’s general manager Allan Harris.
Sixteen of the 18 holes now have beautiful wintergreen grass fairways with the fourth and 13th to be completed soon, but with minimum disruption to members and guests.
One of the reasons why Noosa Golf Club’s picturesque championship course is popular with locals and visitors alike is because it’s an easy walking and generally forgiving layout. It has a par rating of 72 for men and 74 for ladies with a slope rating of 126. The lush fairways are generous (wide), followed by a maintained rough so not too many golf balls are lost. Still, the course is no pushover and can be a challenge to golfers of all levels. The
The greens are a joy to putt on and the bunkering is superb.
The bistro is open seven days a week for lunch and golfers can enjoy dinner Tuesdays to Fridays. The pro shop, one of the biggest and best on the Sunshine Coast, boasts a comprehensive range of equipment, clothing, accessories and hire clubs. Social players are always welcome at Noosa Golf Club.
Little wonder membership at Noosa Golf Club is strong in all categories – men, women and juniors. After playing 18, the perfect place for relaxing with friends is at the comfortable clubhouse. The 19th hole offers a fine bistro and relaxing deck to take in the superb view over the ninth and 18th holes.

“We like to say we are a little different,” he said. “You play all the way out and then play all the way back in, similar to St Andrews.” Golfers short on time and can only fit in nine holes play holes one to six and then 16, 17 and 18. The 18-hole golf course (5359m for men and 4756m for women) meanders through bushland crossed by creeks and dotted with ponds offering a challenging but enjoyable experience for golfers of all levels. On the front nine, there are three par-3s and six par-4s. A tip: Accuracy off the tee on holes three and four is important. The 347m par-4 third doglegs left with the fairway sloping left into trees hiding a water hazard all the way to a generous green with severe surface contours. The back and right side of green falls away steeply.

Unique golf courses of the world: Door to hell golf club. Derweze, Turkmenistan By “Scottish” Bob Davies
T
after digging their holes—which was hard going. They then inserted the flags.
his story is not only about a unique golf course and our great game of golf, it is also about two young men: Anthony, who is English, and Patrick, Scottish, who decided to try and make a difference to someone else’s life on the other side of the world.
They also used the roof of their car which was named “Shirley” to tee off. Four of their holes had to clear the gas crater and they never tried to retrieve their lost balls, which may as well have been “hot-dots” (If they weren’t, they are now!!)
Anthony Millet and Patrick Colquhoun decided to form a team and enter the 2015 Mongol Rally. This rally first started in 2004 with just 6 teams, and by 2015, the Rally had over 250 teams with between 2 -4 people per team. The rally starts in London and ends in Mongolia, covering over 11,000 miles over mountains, deserts, and the steepes of Europe and Asia. The car that Anthony and Patrick used for the rally was a 1986 Porsche 944 bought from a scrap yard for $7000. They proceeded to ensure that the car would meet the rigorous obstacles and very rough terrain, not to mention the difficulties they would have to overcome, the numerous border crossings and many more difficult times that they would encounter on their trip. There is no backup system there and if you break down you need to use your own initiative to rectify the problems. The whole idea of entering the rally was to raise money for their chosen charity, St George’s school in Ethiopia. This had a huge impact in changing the lives of the local children in St George’s for the better. Anthony and Patrick decided that while participating in this rally they would also have a bit of fun for themselves by
Anthony and Patrick have left their hand-built golf course intact so that any of the many visitors to the “Doors to Hell” can play a round of golf, on what must be surely one of the most unique golf courses of the world. Anthony designed and printed his own golf club scorecards of this golf course and was very kind to give me one of them, which has taken pride of place in my collection.
Teeing off on the 1st hole playing a round of golf in each of the 17 countries on their route. After arriving in Turkmenistan and knowing that there was no golf course there, they set about finding a spot to build a 9-hole course. The two lads found a suitable place called Derweze which is also home to the “Door to Hell” gas crater which is about 69m in diameter and over 30m deep and has been burning for over 40 years. This came about in 1971 when this natural gas field collapsed into a large cavern which was venting a large amount
s e i d l O n e d l Go l a v i t s e F f l Go
of gas. The geologists decided to set it alight to stop the spread of methane gas and thought it would burn out in a couple of weeks. However, it has been burning ever since and the locals named it “Doors to Hell”. The two lads set about building their 9-hole golf course, making sure that four of the holes skirted the dangerous gas crater. The ground was hard and very rough, they also had brought some golf flags from home which they used after sorting out their greens (browns) and

Shortly after their game of golf, their car “Shirley” caught fire and was destroyed. They both lost a lot of their personal equipment and belongings including their golf clubs. It was a sad ending to their epic adventure as they could not continue. To their credit they raised over £26,000 for their chosen charity. Well done, lads!! I would like to take the time to thank both Anthony and Patrick for all their help and co-operation in writing about this unique golf course experience. Anthony and his wife have now relocated to Sydney. If you would like to read more about “Team Mongols” trip, visit www.teammongolf.com.
