olf has always been a sport with appeal among the over35s, and the Christchurch Casino Golden Oldies Sports Celebration 2018 will be a fantastic occasion for those golfers who are looking for the Golden Oldies trademark of ‘Fun, Friendship and Fraternity’. Held the week of April 8-14, 2018, the event will offer a range of awards that will recognise the playing results and, importantly, the spirit of Golden Oldies. The week will feature a Stableford format in handicap sections, with daily winners and recognition of the best week’s scores and performances in a relaxed golfing environment. Golfers will also be in for special treatment with New Zealand golfing legend Sir Bob Charles serving as Ambassador for the Festival and his innovative format will be applied to games during the Festival. Golden Oldies Golf Festivals are ideal for golfers who want to try their skills on courses around the world that they might not normally experience. Those who come to Christchurch will enjoy courses of the finest quality, including Pegasus Golf and Sports Club, Harewood Golf Club, the Christchurch Golf Club at Shirley and the high country Terrace Downs Golf Resort located in the shadow of the magnificent Southern Alps. Terrace Downs Resort sits high above

the mighty Rakaia River under the towering ski mountain of Mt Hutt. The views from any part of the golf course are spectacular and amongst the best in the world. The golf course is challenging but very enjoyable and has 11 lakes and over 70 bunkers that will help to keep you focused on your game. There are three restaurants and a spa facility for after golf relaxations before the pleasant drive back to Christchurch.

course has 18 holes that are interesting and diverse. Clear mountain and coastal views are a visual treat. The fairways are dotted with mature trees, waterways, wetland areas, native grasses and 11 lakes. The golf club has hosted the New Zealand Women’s Open on three occasions since its opening in 2009 and boasts an excellent bar and café that makes the day enjoyably complete after your golf.

Harewood Golf Club is proud to offer you the Woodlands Golf Course, a challenging and contrasting golf experience. The Woodlands course has recently been ‘made over’ by the well respected and acclaimed Turner McPherson design team who have also recently re designed the Millbrook Golf Club in Queenstown, host venue for the NZ Men’s Golf Open. Excellent greens, manicured fairways and great views of both the Southern Alps and the Port Hills will mean that the enjoyment of playing here will be long remembered. The club is also the only South Island venue on the ‘Charles Tour’ an event for professional golf in New Zealand.

Christchurch Golf Club is one of the oldest and acclaimed golf courses in New Zealand. Host for the 1990 World Amateur Championship and the Eisenhower Trophy, the Christchurch Golf Club has also hosted 10 New Zealand Opens since the golf club opened in 1873. The golf course has long been lauded for the quality of its greens and fairways. A brand-new modern club house with excellent F&B offerings complements the history of Christchurch Golf Club which is highlighted by the many exhibits in the Sir Bob Charles Gallery including the clubs that Sir Bob used in winning the Open Championship in 1963.

Pegasus Golf Club is set in a delightful rural setting just 25km north of Christchurch. This championship golf

T’S official! Australians love the Sunshine Coast and have it as their favourite holiday destination. Australian holidaymakers, including golfers, are visiting the Sunshine Coast in record numbers, according to statistics released in April by Tourism Research Australia. Yes, people can’t get enough of the Sunshine Coast and embrace quintessential Queensland beach and golf holidays. The report says domestic visitor numbers on the Sunshine Coast jumped by more than 15 per cent to almost four million, while holiday visitors increased by a similar figure. The Sunshine Coast has always had a reputation for quality – whether in food, golden beaches, golf, accommodation, markets, shopping, fishing and hiking Mount Coolum or the Glass House Mountains. For golfers, the number and variety of golf courses on the Sunshine Coast is heavenly. Here you will find a richness of golf courses from challenging layouts, subtle links-style layouts that jump up and grab you and gentler tracks that yield an enjoyable, fun-filled round. More than 30 golf courses – ranging from alluring nine-hole layouts to 18-hole captivating championship courses – offer countless, changing challenges. All the golf courses, many designed by architects with international reputations, offer excellent standards and there is always a warm welcome. No destination for holiday golf offers such easy access, whether you take your car or fly in to the Sunshine Coast Airport at Maroochydore, you can still hope to play somewhere on the day you arrive. Most golf clubs spare no expense in creating well-maintained golf courses with plenty of space for visiting golfers to play. Lush fairways, manicured greens, comfortable clubhouses and moderate costs – holiday golf on the Sunshine Coast has never looked better. But where to start and finish? Well, less than an hour from Brisbane Airport is beautiful Bribie Island where two first-rate courses await. Spend a couple of days there before heading for the scenic town of Maleny on the Blackall Range overlooking the Sunshine Coast hinterland in Queensland. Here you can play Maleny golf course before making a beeline for the heart of the Sunshine Coast to play golf at Caloundra, Headland, Maroochy River, Twin Waters, Pelican Waters and Mt Coolum golf courses. By now, you’ll be itching to reach Noosa where Noosa Springs, Peregian Springs and Noosa golf courses await. Alternatively, you can do it in reverse – the choice is yours.

TO get to the magnificent Bribie Island Golf Club you have to leave the mainland by crossing the Bribie Island Bridge that spans 831.4m. Once you cross the bridge, captivating views of Pumicestone Passage greet you. Then, within minutes, you will arrive at the bucket list Bribie Island course. Built on the natural sand dunes, the highly-rated layout is in top condition all year-round. The 18-hole championship layout (6203m) offers the opportunity to play a sandbelt-style course while enjoying the sub-tropical weather year-round. Each hole is uniquely different at Bribie Island – the fairways and greens thoughtfully framed by trees and bunkers. The native bush-land and sandy lies off the fairways accentuate the need to position your golf ball on the well-manicured fairways and greens. The 18th hole is a great finishing hole, which leads to the clubhouse and outdoor deck. The outdoor area is a popular gathering place for golfers after a round. Consistently rated in Australia’s top-100 public access golf courses and recently rated in Australia’s top-10 most underrated golf courses, Bribie Island will not disappoint. The club’s motto “It’s Worth the Drive” is apt. The club is open every day while Café on 18 is open for lunch daily and dinner Tuesdays through Friday nights. The club also offers breakfast and Saturday night dinners by arrangement and subject to numbers. Bribie Island is located less than an hour north of Brisbane and south of the heart of the Sunshine Coast. Once there, golfers have two of Queensland’s finest sandbelt courses to choose from – Bribie Island golf course and Pacific Harbour golf course. You’ll want to play both so it’s best to find the right accommodation and, as luck would have it, Fairways Golf and Beach Retreat is literally on Bribie Island Golf Club’s doorstep. More: Bribie Island Golf Club, Links Court, Woorim 4507, Tel (07) 3408-1457 www.bribieislandgolfclub.com.au Fairways Golf and Beach Retreat call (07) 3400 2100 or www.fairwaysretreat.com.au IF you took up golf largely for the challenge then Pacific Harbour Golf and Country Club belongs at the top of your “must-play” list. The Ross Watson-designed championship golf course on beautiful Bribie Island is a serious golfer’s dream. Watson describes the course as “risk and reward”, which works well for championship, resort and club golf. The bunkering at Pacific Harbour is a standout feature. Beach bunkers merge with lake edges with natural grasses, reed and sedges.

Bribie Island Golf Club As well as wetlands, bunkering is the dominant feature, in many cases framed with native grass “eyebrows”. “We have more than 70 bunkers so the key to success is you have to be straight off the tee,” golf operations manager Zac Chipperfield said. “It’s a thinking golfer’s course. You can’t just stand up and hit driver on every hole. “You have to pick your lines and try to land your golf ball in the right areas of the fairways and greens.” Most holes have a range of play options. The short holes (par-3s) are exceptional with the 17th having the longest bunker in the Southern Hemisphere. “From the back tees the hole is 205 metres and the bunker on the right is 190 metres long,” Chipperfield said. Water is at every turn with reflective lakes and even the clubhouse is “floating” over a lake and aquatic driving range.

Before or after a round golfers can enjoy casual dining at The Deck Bistro, which is open Monday – Thursday 9am6pm, Friday 9am-late and Sunday’s 7am6pm. For more information: Pacific Harbour Golf and Country Club. Phone the pro shop on (07) 3410 4011 or visit www.pacificharbourgolf.com.au NESTLED within the verdant hills of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Maleny Golf Club’s quality, nine-hole course provides visitors with a picturesque, Scottishinspired “golf-as-it-began” playing experience. From the elevated first tee, players are presented with a panoramic view of the course and an ideal vantage point from which to assess the challenge ahead. Players will encounter some stern tests of golf along the way, including a penal

Pacific Harbour Golf and Country Club kikuyu rough for those who stray from the well-defined fairways. After negotiating a lateral water hazard downhill to the right on the 311m par-4 second and mastering its testing two-tiered green, players arrive at the signature par-3 third offering a 200m approach shot for those keen to challenge themselves from the men’s championship tee. The green is also guarded by two deep riveted pot bunkers from which pulling off a sand-save for par will be well worth bragging about after the round. The Graham Papworth-designed golf course, comprised of six par-4s, two par-3s and one par-5, is a relatively short 2618m off the white tees. However, construction is about to start on the next three holes of the planned 18-hole layout. Papworth’s innovative design takes full advantage of some excellent natural assets – gentle rolling hills, well-drained

volcanic soil, existing kikuyu pastures, surrounding rainforest and some wetland. The course has been built to a high standard under the direction of course superintendent Mick McCombe using the latest agronomic technology and knowhow to construct the Tiff Dwarf greens. McCombe’s effort in transforming this once weed-ridden old dairy farm into a quality golf course has been amazing. His diligence also earned him three awards in 2016 including the Australian Golf Course Superintendents’ Association award for Excellence in Golf Course Management – the industry’s highest national award. The club, which opened to the public in 2015, has cleverly combined two shipping containers to establish a rustic temporary HQ, which only adds to the ambience and overall visitor experience.

Caloundra Golf Club

Maleny Golf Club The course is located just a few minutes from Maleny and visitors are always welcome. The golf shop also has clubs, pull buggies and electric carts for hire. Montville Country Cabins, in conjunction with Maleny Golf Club, is currently offering golfers a special threenight midweek golf-and-stay package. (See Where to Stay-and-Play at the end of this feature.) For more information: Maleny Golf Club, 15 Porters Lane, North Maleny, Qld 4552. Tel (07) 5499-9960. www.malenygolfclub.com.au NOT far from famed Kings Beach at Caloundra is the equally impressive Caloundra Golf Club. The charming parkland golf course

is set in a tranquil and peaceful environment and offers a pleasant combination of ponds and wellestablished trees and interesting strategy decisions off the tees. Long before the resort-style courses arrived on the Sunshine Coast scene, Caloundra was attracting new members and visitors to the well-established club and layout. Caloundra GC opened in 1951 as a nine-hole layout and extended to 18 holes in 1966 and it is here where visiting club golfers feel right at home as the golf course is very much a product of its natural surroundings. Of course, the challenge of the traditional Australian bushland course is another reason why the club is popular with members and visitors alike.

Off the championship tees, the golf course stretches to 5987 metres (5356m for women). The delightful, picturesque course features a number of tight, tree-lined holes that make accuracy and the ability to shape the golf ball off the tee important. And that means the layout is a balance between risk and reward. You can smash a driver off the tee or hit a positional iron, go for the green in two heroic shots or throw a wedge to the superb greens. There are five par-3s and they are a real test with none measuring less than 145 metres. If that is not enough, there is water on five holes and bunkers protect most greens.

Caloundra golf course’s final three holes are extremely demanding – just what you want from a championship layout. The 16th (353m) has an index of eight while the 17th (369m) and the 18th (393m) are indexed four and two respectively. If you require one birdie from the final three holes to win a title, you are going to have to work very hard indeed. Caloundra Golf Club, which can lay claim to producing former British Open champion Ian Baker-Finch, has produced numerous state and national champions. Visitors are always welcome at Caloundra and social times are available most days. Motorised carts and golf equipment are available for hire. The clubhouse, which overlooks the 18th green and fairway, incorporates a

Headland Golf Club fully-equipped bar and dining room and also specialises in weddings, birthdays or any other celebration while the pro shop has an excellent range of clubs and accessories. One of the attractions is each day at 4pm the Rainbow Lorikeets arrive on time and visitors are welcome to participate in the feeding activity. For more information: Caloundra Golf Club, 1 Charles Woodward Drive, Caloundra 4551. Tel (07) 5491-1811. www.caloundragolfclub.com.au JUST four kilometres from the golden beaches of Mooloolaba, a wonderful dining and accommodation precinct, is Headland Golf Club. Perched high up the hill at Buderim, the well-appointed clubhouse commands sweeping vistas over the par-72 championship golf course and across to Mooloolaba’s skyline and beaches. Popular with locals and visitors alike, Headland has a mature look about it, which isn’t surprising as it dates back to 1955. The clubhouse is much more modern, with a welcoming entrance, attractive, modern bar and dining area that leads out to a large deck while the 6086m (5409m for women) golf course offers the challenge and enjoyment of a classic layout. The club has a large, well appointed pro shop on the lower level, and while you won’t get lost navigating your way around the modern shop you might lose track of time because there is plenty of gear to touch and feel. The club’s general manager Ben Dobson said the course always presents well. “It’s in fantastic condition all year round,” he said. “It’s in a perfect location in the centre of the Sunshine Coast, and is the ideal course to play during a golf trip to the Coast.” In recent years, new cart paths have 8

INSIDE GOLF TRAVEL | June 2017

been constructed and three of the layout’s five dams have been enlarged, adding to the aesthetic appeal of the golf course as well as all-important water storage. The condition of the tees, fairways and excellent greens make Headland a pleasurable golf course to play. Still, the gently undulating layout is no pushover. The slope rating is 128 off the black tees for men and 129 off the red tees for ladies courtesy of quick, true greens, greenside bunkers, tree-lined fairways and five water hazards. Off the back tees, it’s one of the most challenging courses on the Sunshine Coast but, depending on your skill level, you have the option of playing from a tee block that suits your game. For nature lovers, Headland is also a flora and fauna reserve. At Headland Golf Club, membership is almost at capacity and to introduce the next generation of golfers to the game, juniors can join for only $99 which includes their Capitation Fee and a oneon-one lesson with one of the club’s resident professionals. The club has a highly successful “Starting Women in Golf” (SWING) program, which was instigated by former golf director Laurel Opray as a pathway for women golfers into club membership. Green fees are $52pp for 18 holes. Group discounts for 12 or more players apply. The club has a Sunday and Monday special – four golfers can play using two golf carts after 9am on Sundays and all day on Mondays for $220. That’s $55pp. Open competitions for golf club members with a GA handicap on Tuesday (mixed), Wednesday (men) and Thursday (ladies morning, men afternoon) $44 including a competition fee. Mount Coolum Golf Club JUST a short drive from the Sunshine Coast Airport at Maroochydore is Mount Coolum Golf Club, which is one of the most picturesque settings to play golf. Nestled at the foot of spectacular Mt Coolum with the rock providing a breathtaking backdrop on most tees and fairways, Mount Coolum is an extremely friendly and welcoming club. So it isn’t surprising that more than 60,000 rounds are played here each year. An added bonus is the layout is relatively flat, which makes it a comfortable walk. The front and back-nine holes are very different in character. The course consists of six par-5s, six par-4s and six par 3s, however, on the back nine there are four par-5s and four-par-3s. Golfers of all levels will enjoy the challenge along with the beauty and the abundance of natural flora and fauna. Perhaps the biggest challenge is the water hazards that come into play on 12 holes. Combine all this with the long, narrow fairways and you have a true test of golf on your hands. The club’s general manager Sharon Purnell said the condition of the golf course was its best advertisement. “We have members and visitors constantly commenting on how well the course is playing and how professional and friendly the staff is,” she said. Ms Purnell said the golf club was located close to various resorts and accommodation houses and was the ideal place to hold a corporate event or trade day. The club’s facilities include a fullystocked pro shop with motorised carts, retail and hire equipment as well as the latest in men’s and women’s golf fashion. Club pro Stephen Jenkins is a PGA AAA and Level 3 coaching accredited. The air-conditioned clubhouse has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with a large deck overlooking the course and spectacular Mount Coolum.

The Bistro is open for lunch Wednesday to Sunday and the bar facilities and gaming lounge is open seven days a week. Golfers can relax on the balcony after a game and enjoy lunch with views over Australia’s second largest rock – Mt Coolum. “It’s all part of one of life’s great golfing experiences.” Ms Purnell said. The club’s philosophy is to ensure members, guests and visitors receive the highest level of service and experience when attending the club or on the course. Mount Coolum GC has social play on Monday, Friday and Sunday and offer discounts to social bookings of 10 or more players. The club welcomes visitors and guests to play and enjoy golf in the relaxed and friendly atmosphere. For more information: Mt Coolum Golf Club. Lumeah Drive, Mt Coolum 4573. Tel (07) 5446-3125. www.mtcoolumgolf.com Maroochy River Golf Club is home to a stunning new championship course and magnificent clubhouse that has quickly made it a must-play layout for every discerning golfer. Located just a few minutes from Maroochydore, the Graham Marshdesigned layout opened in 2015 to rave reviews. Here, golfers also enjoy spectacular views towards imposing Mt Coolum. Formerly Horton Park Golf Club, the 6411m soft spike course offers superior practice facilities including full-size driving range, hire clubs and motorised cart hire. The pro shop will take care of all your needs and stocks a wide range of the latest equipment and accessories. Dedicated Australian PGA-qualified professionals provide state-of-theart coaching in the Queensland Golf Performance Centre. Women and juniors are welcome and positively encouraged at Maroochy River. “We welcome golf groups,” said the

club’s general manager Charlie McGill. “Our friendly staff are committed to creating a golf day to remember both on and off the course.” The course perfectly blends risks and rewards to match the differing abilities and ambitions of the individual player. Each hole rewards safe play when approaching the greens, but also tempts the adventurous to squeeze a few more yards to avoid the carefully placed bunkers and save a shot. Nowhere is this choice more evident than on the closing hole, which necessitates a carry over water to find the green. The waterways and feature walls snaking through much of the course and the undulating terrain make for a stunning visual feast, while clusters of bunkers and bunker islands break up the fairways. There are few trees on the course, but that is intentional. “We don’t want them spoiling the spectacular views,” McGill said. And the wind, which blows most days, keeps players cool in the warmest of weather. While not a links course in the true sense of the word, it has a links feel, and the exposed layout means that golfers will be called upon to use their full repertoire of shots, particularly when the wind is blowing. Club selection is crucial and, at times, tricky. To find the green from the back tees on the par-3 eighth, for instance, could

Maroochy River Golf Club mean taking a 7-iron one day and a 3-wood the next. Maroochy River has a marvellous modern clubhouse with excellent dining and function facilities. This allows the club to cater for functions including birthday parties, wedding receptions and celebrations of life to gala dinners. There are many reasons to visit Maroochy River Golf Club, but right at the top is the promise of the warmest of welcomes. Corporate clients can also benefit from sponsorship opportunities and we are an excellent choice of venue for a meeting or conference.

The course is forgiving with 6000plus metres of easy walking and wide fairways. Still, it’s no pushover and can be a challenge to golfers of all levels. After playing 18, the perfect place for relaxing with friends is at the clubhouse. The 19th hole offers a fine bistro and relaxing deck to take in the superb view over the ninth and 18th holes. Noosa Golf Club celebrates the camaraderie of golf with the best value

green fees, membership and hire charges on the Sunshine Coast. No matter your skill level, the club warmly welcome visitors. Noosa is just 90 minutes from Brisbane’s international and domestic airports or just 30 minutes from Sunshine Coast Airport, which has daily flights from Australian capital cities. For more information: Noosa Golf Club, 46 Cooroy-Noosa Road, Tewantin, Qld 4565. Tel (07) 5447-1407. Email admin@noosagolf.com.au. www.noosagolf.com.au THE most difficult thing about visiting Noosa Springs Golf & Spa Resort is deciding just what to do and in which order to do it. Of course, if you are a golfer – male or female – it’s easy. Just head for the first tee of the magnificent 18-hole, par-72 championship

golf course and prepare yourself for a golfing treat. Designed by Graham Papworth, this 6180m gem is rated one of Australia’s finest golf courses. It winds its way through lush bushland and if you are lucky you’ll catch glimpses of kangaroos and other native wildlife as you take in the beautiful surroundings. But there’s more to this golf course than just being a treat for the senses. While it’s no monster it’s certainly a test of your golfing prowess. That’s one of the reasons it’s hosted the Australian PGA’s qualifying school tournament for the past couple of years. For women who love their golf, though, there are a number of tough decisions. Do the ladies opt for Noosa Springs’ world-class spa where they can relax with a full body massage, use the premium thermal suite, or choose a facial or sugar scrub? Unsure what’s for you? Just ask one of the spa’s highly qualified therapists. Maybe they would prefer a set of tennis with friends or, if they are ambitious, why not take on one of Noosa Springs’ pros. Still, another round of golf is always an option. Of course, for a golfer, there is nothing better than to roll out of bed and onto a fairway. Perhaps that’s why golfers love staying at Noosa Spring Golf & Spa Resort. Set within a private environment, the luxury one- and two-bedroom apartments look out upon the golf course.

Located close to the clubhouse and a short stroll to all the sport and recreation facilities, the apartments are equipped with WiFi, washing machine, dryer, private balconies and king size beds. Noosa Springs also offers well-equipped function rooms which make it an ideal destination for meetings and conferences – particularly for delegates who have the time to enjoy the full range of facilities at this truly fully integrated resort. In the evening, everybody can enjoy the cafe, restaurant and bars where Noosa Springs’ staff will happily serve up the finest food, wines and beers. And next morning they can work off the excess calories in the resort’s wellequipped fitness centre, which includes a heated 25m swimming pool. Perhaps guests would prefer to hop on a free shuttle bus and explore the Hastings Street shops, laze on Noosa beach or hike through Noosa National Park – all only a few minutes’ drive away. Ah, decisions – decisions. For more information: Noosa Springs Golf & Spa Resort, Links Drive, Noosa Heads 4567. Tel (07) 5440-3333. www.noosasprings.com.au LIKE the best links designed anywhere, Twin Waters golf course is a stern and stunning test of championship golf set in a location not renowned for links-style golf.

Noosa Springs Golf & Spa Resort The Peter Thomson and Mike Wolveridge-designed course starts on relatively flat land and builds steadily to a crescendo of great finishing holes that traipse through the undulations just a stone’s throw from the golden shoreline of Mudjimba. While Twin Waters is a championship layout that hosts the Holden Scramble national final, it’s not a course that will beat you into submission. When you stroll off the 18th green, you are more likely to say, “let’s book in for another round”. Twin Waters is always in pristine condition and fits the classic description – “tranquil and unpretentious”. There’s a real comfortable, polished feel about the course, which is located less

than five kilometres from the Sunshine Coast Airport. The course exacts its toll for the early favours, however, building slowly but surely into difficult and interest on both the front and back nine. Both nines are equally strong with just a five-metre difference in length – 3089m and 3094m respectively. From the championship tees, the course measures 6183 metres (5835m white tees and 5260m red) and requires great shot-making variety because of the contoured fairways and large greens. For the better player, it’s a strong, challenging course, but mid- to highhandicappers have the advantage of playing from the forward tees. The layout offers generous landing

areas and bail out areas around the greens. Concentration is critical on the putting surfaces because the greens are typical of links golf – large with subtle slopes. The eighth hole (index 1) is just one of the standouts because it has the green designed in line with the “road hole” at St Andrews. The water on the right is intimidating and is a definite “no-go zone”. The 18th is a suitably testing par-5 and it is a hole where many contests have been won … and lost. Twin Waters Golf Club is open to visitors and social clubs 7 days a week and offers packages for all sizes of groups. The aquatic driving range is unique and only one of a handful in Queensland.

Twin Waters golf course The fully licensed clubhouse is open every day for coffee and lunch at very reasonable prices. For more information: Twin Waters Golf Club. Ocean Drive, Twin Waters 4564. Tel (07) 5457-2444. www.twinwatersgolfclub.com.au AS of late, Peregian Golf Course and Driving Range has enjoyed a seemingly new lease on life. The previously embattled facility was on the brink of collapse in 2016 until Victorian-based Golf Services Management stepped in and became hell-bent on spawning their resurgence. Now six months down the track, the centrepiece of this resurgence is the newly manicured golf course, which has undergone significant works across the board. Fairways have been re-laid, irrigation improved and a large-scale tidy-up were all carried out, the results of which are now beginning to bear fruit. So far, these results are a layout that is typical of the renowned Sunshine Coast golf pedigree. Well-conditioned, tree-lined fairways

appear prominently and are woven naturally between an array of water features where local flora and fauna rests. Across all 18 holes, golfers are presented challenges that are far more enjoyable than they are insurmountable, an approach that encourages on-course fun. Complementing the golf course is a full fleet of brand new golf carts, well-stocked pro shop, practice putting and chipping area as well as first-class locker-room facilities. However, one of the most significant and promising changes evident at Peregian is that all facilities are completely open to everyone seven days a week all year round. This includes the golf course, driving range, newly branded Par Bar, coaching and clinics as well as a new restaurant opening mid June. Already this has begun to promote a family friendly atmosphere that complements the golf course, enabling locals and visitors to enjoy Peregian irrespective of their interest in playing or hitting balls. Dress regulations remain relaxed and there is an unwritten invitation for visitors

to come for the golf but stay for the classic Sunshine Coast atmosphere. In the eyes of Golf Services Management, this is an inclusive and laid-back philosophy that lends itself perfectly to the idyllic lifestyle of Sunshine Coast golf. Peregian Golf Course and Driving Range is open to the public seven days a week, year-round. IF you haven’t played the magnificent Greg Norman-designed Pelican Waters Golf Club for a while you should venture there again. The Shark visited a few years ago to look over his masterpiece and soften the course ever so slightly by removing a few “rogue” bunkers. Now the members and regular visitors are happily making more pars and birdies although the course still offers a stern interrogation.

Located one hour north of Brisbane in the stunning surrounds of Caloundra’s Golden Beach, Pelican Waters has a range of impressive features including the superb clubhouse with restaurant and bar (open for breakfast and lunch), undercover driving range, practice putting and chipping greens and wellstocked golf shop. But it’s the 6359m championship course that attracts a lot of attention. It offers some of the best playing surfaces anywhere and the numerous tee positions cater for players with varying skills. Still, pitfalls abound, particularly if you are not striking the golf ball accurately off the tee. The bunkering is a unique feature as is the thick sections of native grasses growing healthily from sweeping mounds and along the water’s edge. The first six holes, even from the back tees, are not overly long, but do demand a thoughtful strategy. Visitors may find themselves lulled into a false sense of security at the straightforward par-4 first hole.

Peregian Golf Course Those who have a good round going by the par-3 sixth could find the total water carry a worry with a large bunker between the green and the lake. Bounded by lush bushland and scenic creek land, Pelican Waters has intelligently integrated the existing natural landscape and translated it to simply exhilarating golfing terrain. The closing four holes weave through thick native bushland and feature regular clumps of native grasses. The club’s general manager Andrew Kenny said Pelican Waters was ranked number one on the Sunshine Coast. “We are number 58 in the top-100 courses in Australia and number 21 in the top-100 public access courses in Australia,” he said. SUNSHINE COAST GOLF PASS

QUEENSLAND’S Sunshine Coast is a name that’s synonymous with intrepid holidaymakers, not only within Australia but across the entire world. There were almost 260,000 international visitors to the Sunshine Coast last financial year, with an additional 3 million domestic visitors enjoying the area’s pristine beaches and sublime lifestyle. Now more than ever, visitors to the Sunshine Coast can also add golf onto their to-do list after the launch of the Sunshine Coast Golf Group’s Golf Pass. Four of the region’s most renowned golf courses have teamed up to offer a golfing experience likened to few other, allowing visitors to play Noosa Springs, Pelican Waters, Peregian and Twin Waters with one handy and easy to manage Golf Pass. Individually, all championship courses are of revered quality, yet when combined in sequence they form an exceptionally captivating challenge that differs greatly to the usual golf holiday.

Pelican Waters Golf Club Now, the Golf Pass enables the golfer to choose his or her own sequence and itinerary of bookings, allowing individuals and groups versatility, yet also the ability to savour an experience that truly is unique on all levels. By design, booking the Golf Pass is a seamless and enjoyable process. Golfers simply register their interest on the group’s website and build their own itinerary then confirm - leaving all tee time bookings, course information and details in one easy to manage place. Better still, the Golf Pass offers a 25 per cent discount on the total cost of green fees and includes share carts with some great availability on tee-times in the purposely built booking engine.

Three different on-site accommodation options even further appease touring individuals or groups, with various lodging offerings at Noosa Springs, Pelican Waters, and Twin Waters. Geographically, all courses are dispersed evenly across the region where travelling between venues provides a stunning snapshot of the Sunshine Coast. For most travelling golfers though, a holiday is only as good as the golf courses played and for anyone taking up a Sunshine Coast Golf Pass, this delivers on a whole new level in a holidaying hotspot. Sunshine Coast Golf Passes are only $299 per person and can be purchased at www.golfsunshinecoast.com.au

Say ‘Bula!’ to Fiji fun Andrew Crockett

F

iji is a wonderful holiday destination, even for golfers. You instantly feel like you are on holiday as soon as you hop off the plane, as your body clock switches to ‘island time’. You are greeted at the airport to the sweet island music, played live on ukuleles, and native guitars as you walk through the recentlyrefurbished Nadi International Airport with cries of “BULA” from the very friendly local people of Fiji. Once outside and in the tropical warmth, you are soon to be at the beach and soaking in the sun and dreaming of where you will play golf tomorrow.

Flying in from Brisbane (a comfortable three-hour flight), I couldn’t quite believe it as land came into view and we saw Fiji. I should say, we saw the ‘Fiji Islands’…there are hundreds of them; it is quite literally a pacific paradise. If you love the beach and the coastal lifestyle, you are probably already well-versed in Fiji and everything it has to offer, but if not, well, there is so much on offer you will be hard pressed to find time to do it all; sailing, scuba diving, fishing, surfing, snorkelling and all things coastal.

Within 20 minutes of the airport is the port of Denarau, a central hub of fivestar restorts, hotels, a championship golf course and the gateway to ferries and seaplanes that can take you out to the other islands. There is plenty on offer for golfers with families; in fact it is the family feeling that Fiji nurtures that makes it an ideal holiday destination for golfers with kids. Beyond resort living, there are so many activities and places for the family to visit. As a golfer, you don’t need more than a day in Fiji to wonder ‘how on Earth did Vijay Singh topple Tiger Woods as the World’s number one, growing up in these remote pacific islands?’ Fiji is an island chain in the middle of the ocean. ‘How did they get golf clubs here?’ you wonder. Or ‘Who designed the golf courses and how on Earth did a little boy from these islands become the world’s best?’ Now that is another story, but Vijay Singh’s influence on modern Fiji is terrific for golfers. His Natadola Bay Golf Course on the Coral Coast is the jewel in the crown for golf in Fiji. In August the Fiji International golf championship is played on the Natadola Bay golf course and the whole country celebrates golf.

This year, the event will be contested from August 17-20, and from all reports, it will be as exciting as ever. Recently co-sanctioned by both the Asian and European Tours, alongside the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia, this year’s event should see a greater TV audience, potentially bigger prize purses and no doubt even more star players travelling to Fiji to compete for the title. But as a spectator I have to say, the Fiji International isn’t just about golf. It is about family, culture and it is a bit of a party, an end-of-year celebration for those who make it. The InterContinental Resort is where most people stay and it is 5 star luxury that will have you in a high level of comfort and approximately 5 minute’s drive from the golf course. The InterContinental houses hundreds of rooms, villas and penthouses, several swimming pools, spas, four bars and three award-winning restaurants. Right on the beach, with surf out the front, The InterContinental is so well equipped and beautiful that you can basically checkin and never leave, if that is the sort of holiday you want, The InterContinental

has everything you could hope for and more. Set on hundreds of acres, it is spacious, modern and vibrant. The Fiji International golf event is a great time to visit Fiji with family, relax and perhaps play a bit of golf yourself. The Australian PGA do a fine job putting the tournament on and the golf course is an enjoyable walk with plenty of shade for spectators and activities for kids. During tournament week there are ample night happenings back at the resort and a great opportunity to feel part of the tournament week. The tournament is really embraced by the Fijian locals, even the President of Fiji attends the ceremonies and the elders put on a traditional Kava ceremony. Standing on the 6th tee at Natadola Bay with the coral reef on your left, volcanic rock formations on your right, waves crashing in the distance and the gentle local people fishing with rudimentary instruments – it is difficult to concentrate on the golf ball with the visual spectacular going on around you. Fiji is a golfing experience you will never forget. •

Fiji – where happiness finds you At the heart of the South Pacific and dotted in sparkling turquoise waters, 333 islands form Fiji – Where Happiness Finds You. Abounding in natural beauty, unique culture and the friendliest population on the planet, Fiji is the ideal getaway for all ages, tastes and budgets. Fiji’s luxury resorts offer spectacular spa treatments, unforgettable outdoor adventures and award-winning fine-dining. Eco-tours, jungle-treks, village visits and virtually every sort of water-sport can also be experienced in Fiji, where the world’s best soft coral diving is available and numerous nature reserves and beautiful beaches and can also be explored. Rolling on the river

Great golf along the majestic Murray River A

ustralia’s most significant river has inspired a recreational haven that seamlessly combines natural beauty and world-class golfing facilities, attracting professional and leisure players from across the globe.

The Murray River stretches almost three thousand kilometres between Victoria and New South Wales, from the Snowy Mountains to where it meets the sea at Encounter Bay. Dotted along the river, golf courses have been designed by some of the world’s legends and as a result offer a variety of challenges and experiences for golfers to savour. Golf courses near Swan Hill offer scenic greens and fairways, highlighted by the premier championship golf course at the Murray Downs Resort. Large greens 16

are undulating, fast and complemented by perfectly manicured and groomed fairways. Further along in bustling Echuca-Moama you’ll find golf can be conveniently mixed with sightseeing. It was once the hub of Australia’s riverboat trade and paddlesteamers still grace the mighty waters. Nearby is the well-regarded Rich River Golf Club Resort with its two award-winning 18-hole championship golf courses. Nestled on the riverbank is the impressive Tocumwal Golf Club with its Captains Course offering quick greens and gently undulating fairways, and the heavily-treed Presidents Course. Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort is Australia’s largest public access golfing complex with 45 holes. The

Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort Murray Course meanders through towering river gums and sandy river flats where numerous lakes and lagoons demand precision and the 56 bunker Lake Course requires pure skill. In neighbouring Cobram-Barooga there are two championship courses waiting to be experienced at the Cobram Barooga Golf Club. The 18-hole Old Course features a clever design with narrow, tree-lined fairways sure to put any golfer to the test, while the West Course has wider fairways and larger greens with many more slopes. Indeed, along the Murray River you will never be far from a golf club waiting for you to rise to the challenge. Here are some of Inside Golf’s favourites!

Tocumwal Golf and Bowls

Cobram Barooga Golf Club

Cobram Barooga Golf Club A golfer’s paradise, Cobram Barooga Golf Club is a venue that has it all, offering two championship-standard golf courses in the one location. Set on the NSW banks of the Murray River, the Old Course is not long by modern standards (measuring 6176m), however the clever design and narrow fairways provide a good test of skill to any player. The Old Course is very traditional in its design with many holes being framed by majestic Red gums and pines. The greens are fast and true with clever bunkering catching wayward shots. With many classic golf holes the Old Course is still the must-play course in the area. The modern-style West Course has wider fairways and larger greens, with more slopes, for an added challenge. The West Course differs from the old course in its design, which is best described as a mixture of resort and modern links style. The West Course is also slightly longer than the Old, with larger, undulating

greens and well-placed hazards. With a higher slope rating than the Old Course, the West Course provides an enjoyable test to players of all standards. Combined with an abundance of local flora and fauna, as well as great weather, Cobram Barooga Golf Club is a fantastic destination for your next golfing adventure. Their stay and play packages cover everything from booking tee times, accommodation, breakfast and dinner reservations. The well-stocked Pro Shop is equipped with Trackman technology and the knowledge of two PGA professionals, who are available for lessons. The stunning clubhouse, Bridges, is the perfect complement to the courses. Take advantage of the fantastic weather and impressive views dining inside or out. Top-off your experience and stay right next door overlooking the fairways in the 4.5 star Villas. For more information: www.cbgc.com.au

Black Bull Golf Course

Black Bull Golf Course The Black Bull Golf Course is located in the heart of the Silverwoods Golf & Lifestyle Development in Yarrawonga. Black Bull is a purpose-built Thomson Perrett Championship Course on the banks of Lake Mulwala and caters for all golfing abilities. The large rolling Grand Prix couch fairways are only bettered by the first class G2 bent greens and natural surrounds that you will experience when playing at the Black Bull. Black Bull also has its own amen corner known as the “Bull Ring”. The first of the Bull Ring is Hole number 4, a 180m par-3 across water surrounded by bunkers both left and right. Hole 5 is a short par-4 with water all the way down the right side, with a fairway that sits on an angle ready to kick your ball towards the waiting landscape. Once you get past the tee shot, a difficult shot to a two-tiered green awaits. Finally, Hole 6 is rated number one on the card for a reason as this 400m par-4 has water down the right side and a

narrow passage to feed the drive past to avoid the 4 fairway bunkers waiting to trap the ball. Once you negotiate the tee shot a long approach into another two-tiered green wrapped by water awaits. Hole 6 faces due West and you will more than likely be into a head wind, good luck! Overseeing the “Bull Ring” is a life-sized bull known affectionately as “Charlie” who loves to take a selfie with the travelling golfer. Black Bull’s reputation continues to grow with the well-known Accor’s Sebel luxury international hotel and serviced apartments joining forces with Silverwoods. The hotel will be sitting in a prime location within Silverwoods on the edge of Lake Mulwala known as The Point and will boast some of the best accommodation and food to be found along the river. The hotel will include a 300-seat conference facility, bar, bistro, gym, pool and other health amenities within the resort when due for proposed completion in 2018. Word is quickly

Rich River Golf Club Rich River Golf Club is a mainstay for the Inside Golf team whenever we travel the Murray. The facility features two very impressive 18-hole championship courses, the East and the West. They’ve been developed over the years to become one of regional Australia’s premier golfing venues, where golfers love the rolling fairways, carefully tended greens and towering eucalyptus. The West Course has traditional tree- lined

fairways with tricky, small greens that take the serious player on a thought- provoking and challenging 6,183m journey. The East Course, which had a major transformation after a redesign by Peter Thomson in 1998, features large greens, wide fairways and those famous Thomson bunkers which really keep you thinking about your strokes. Course length is 6,131m. Tee times are available seven days a week, with services including golf carts, pro shop, equipment hire and a beverage cart for a quick refresher. The 12th on the West is one of the most difficult holes on the course. A strong dogleg-right, it’s critical to hit the fairway in just the right spot (hint: Fairway metal or iron off the tee is often a good bet). Your second shot requires a good solid strike over Howard’s Lake to reach the green, which is gently sloped from front to back. A par on this hole is always a good score. The 18th on the East course is a monster at 532m. Be sure to avoid the fairway bunker on the left from the tee, as well as the fairway bunkers on your second

Premium Australian and New Zealand wines and local and imported beer feature too. You can also drop into the bistro for a continental or cooked breakfast, or for a quick snack from midday. Then there’s the Coffee Shop, where you can settle down on the terrace with an expertly-brewed espresso coffee and a sweet treat that’s been freshly prepared by the in-house pastry chef.

Thurgoona Country Club Resort can accommodate up to 7 people with 3 bedrooms, a welcoming lounge/dining area, 2 bathrooms and 3 toilets. There are so many leisure options here: two outdoor pools, a spa, gym equipment, three bowling greens, three croquet courses and nine tennis courts.

of the country’s best resort courses. It also happens to be a favourite of the Inside Golf team. The 6197m course is in striking contrast to the spectacular surrounding Mallee plains. It is both beautiful and challenging, with a dramatic backdrop of river gums, artfully formed lakes and some very tricky signature holes, notably the par-3 5th, featuring a daunting carry over a lake, which follows the hole all the way to the

green where bunkers guard the left side of the narrow target. The course fairways are superbly tended and groomed, while the bent greens are generally large, undulating and very fast with thoughtful tee positions and pin placements. The layout is easy-walking, but small hills, bumps and rolls break the landscape. Tee times are available seven days a week, with services including golf carts,

Nearby is the wellregarded Rich River Golf Club Resort with its two award-winning 18 hole championship golf courses. The West Course has traditional tree lined fairways with small tricky greens. The East Course, re-designed by Peter Thomson, has large

UNIQUE GOLF COURSES OF THE WORLD

olf first came to Bolivia in 1911 when British engineers came to build railroads and bridges through the rugged Andes Mountains for the Bolivian Railroad Co, which was launched in 1888. The British engineers and their mechanics liked to play golf, and they and some of the locals would play wherever they could find the space to do so. Thus, the beginnings of the first golf club in Bolivia started In October 1912 and was named Golf Club La Paz. The first real golf course was founded in 1924 on land that was donated by the Ormachea family. The golf course was located in El Alto; at that time just a small village near La Paz. It started with just nine holes but later added another nine to make it an 18-hole golf course, with an area of 130 hectares. The current La Paz Golf Club was built in 1948 and it was one mile southeast of the old El Alto golf club in a place called Mallasill. It was designed and built by the British Expats with the help of the locals who still wanted to play a game of golf. It took over two years to get the course running with big rocks and boulders having to be moved. Following this long labour of love, the first-ever all-turf course in the country was opened, and today the 30

golfers play on a well-manicured Country Club-style golf course, with much of it is still maintained by hand. The golf club clings precariously to a broad steep canyon on one side of the Bolivian Andes Mountains, and uniquely when you are in La Paz you are either walking uphill or downhill as the golf course is built on just about the only fairly level piece of land. The golf course is 10,965 feet above sea level at its highest and 10,750 at its lowest. Controversy surrounds the statement of La Paz being named The Highest Golf Course in the world as the British engineers had built several rudimentary golf courses throughout the Andes Mountains, which included the Tactu Golf Course in Peru which was at a height of 14,033 feet above sea level making it the highest golf course at that time, however the golf course was abandoned in 1990 and is now unrecognized today as a golf course. In addition, the Yak Golf Course and Environmental Park (Kupup, India) at 13,054 feet above sea level, is also reported as the official highest course. At any rate, if you’re keen to have a hit at the top of the world, and watch your drive sail for miles and miles through the ultra-thin air at altitude, then pack your bags (and your clubs) and head for Bolivia!
