HEN you book your golf trip to Perth, make sure you factor in Kalgoorlie Golf Course because the sublime Graham-Marsh-designed layout is one you’ll definitely want to tick off your bucket list. The first thing you notice about this layout of wild beauty is the magnificent colours – red, green and blue. The red dirt butts up against the green manicured fairways with the blue sky as the backdrop. Variety and fine conditioning define this work of art. From the tee boxes, the course looks intimidating but it has numerous tee positions and is considerably more forgiving than many others you’ll play in your travels. From the tips, the course stretches to 6768m, but off the shorter public tees it’s 835 metres shorter. Full-grown trees on this desert-style course are as rare as freeway civility, but the first 14 holes boast a variety of trees, though they rarely come into play. On the final four holes, the course is virtually treeless though the fairways dip and rise somewhat. Club professional Paul Breuker said Kalgoorlie prided itself on its greens, which clock in at between 9 and 11 on the Stimpmeter. “Graham Marsh has designed big, flowing greens which allow five or six pin positions.”
Kalgoorlie Golf Course Many greens are tiered with the par-5 ninth a lengthy, three-tier rollercoaster.
but the average distance off the tee has generous landing areas,” Breuker said.
An approach shot here could be anything from a wedge to a seven-iron depending on the pin position.
The 202m par-3 17th from the tiger tees is challenging and a definite feature hole. From the members’ tees it’s 178m, the public tees 165m and the ladies tees 118m.
“If there’s one shot you need around here’ it’s a good short game,” Breuker said. “A lot of greens are elevated so you are playing a lot of uphill chip shots, but that is becoming easier now due to the fairways maturing and the greens starting to soften after five years of maturity. “It’s a typical Marsh design in that if you hit the ball long the fairways narrow,
“When you stand on the tee it’s a very elevated green with a drop off to the right side,” Breuker explained. “It’s long and visually pleasing.”
The club’s restaurant and bar is open for business from Wednesdays to Sundays. “We recommend everyone should play this golf course,” Breuker said. Inside Golf did and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Kalgoorlie Golf Course Phone: (08) 9026-2626 www.kalgoorliegolfcourse.com golf@kalgoorliegolfcourse.com

Wembley Golf Course NOW you may not know this, but Wembley Golf Course has virtually guaranteed its future in golf by adding facilities that attract golfers and nongolfers alike. The latest addition to what is already an impressive facility is an 18-hole, high quality landscaped miniature golf course – the first of its kind in Western Australia.
“They enjoy that because they get more holes-in-one and get around quicker. “It’s also attracting the 18 to 35 age group – mates coming along to have some fun and many use it as date nights before going to the restaurant for dinner. “It’s good fun and you don’t have to be a golfer to play mini-golf.”
The layout weaves through sand traps, bridges and water features with a choice of starter, intermediate and advanced holes.
This, along with a modern playground for children, complements the facility’s two 18-hole golf courses – the Old Course and the Tuart Course – the two-tier 80bay fully-automated driving range, 5000 square metre short-game practice area and the beautifully appointed Ambrose Estate.
The first nine holes even includes wheelchair access and there are three hole locations of varying sizes on each hole.
This includes the casual all day dining restaurant ‘300 Acres’, function rooms, kids’ party rooms and a ceremony pavilion.
“We use big holes for the kids,” general manager Matt Day said.

Oh, and make sure your first stop is the pro shop where Troy “Big Red” Murphy awaits.
“If you do miss the fairways it’s a jail,” Murphy said. “To escape, you virtually have to play sideways because you can’t advance it very far. “So, accuracy is essential on this course which is generally in perfect condition all year round.” The club general manager Paul Campaner said the club was renowned for its pure bent grass greens and manicured fairways.
“It’s an easy walking course because it’s flat,” Murphy said. “It’s just the ninth and 18th that is slightly uphill so you earn your beer in the bar after the round. “I invite all golfers to come and play Capel because you will definitely be talking about it afterwards. “We are open to visitors seven days a week and green fees are $40 for 18 holes and $25 for nine.”

IF you go to WA to play golf, make sure The Links Kennedy Bay is on your short list. It’s a wonderful golfing experience and one you won’t forget in a hurry. The Links Kennedy Bay might not have a large pretentious clubhouse, but what it does have is a true links golf course of the highest quality. Little wonder it’s been rated the third best public access course in Australia behind Barnbougle and Lost Farm in Tasmania. Chris Gray, the former Australian amateur champion and winner of many professional events in Australia and abroad, said The Links Kennedy Bay, managed by Peter Whittle of Prime Golf, was “special and unique”. “To play The Links Kennedy Bay successfully you need to be able to control your ball by hitting it low and high when needed,” Gray said. “We get a bit of wind here so hit it low into the wind and high downwind. “The fairways are quite generous, but there are a lot of pot bunkers (115) so watch out for them. They are only small but they tend to swallow the balls up quite a bit.” Gray lists the par-4 fifth the toughest on the course. It’s 417m from the black tee box, 410m (blue), 382m (white) and 355m (red).
Busselton Golf Club “There are bunkers down the fairways so it’s quite tight to get through those,” he said.
Visitors are welcome to play every day and hungry golfers can take advantage of the club’s full menu.
The short par-4 12th (307m off the white tees) is a risk-reward hole.
The Links Kennedy Bay Phone: (08) 9524-5991 www.kennedybay.com.au admin@kennedybay.com.au
“You can drive it downwind, but there is trouble around the green,” he said. “Most people lay-up and wedge it in. “The par-3s are great and some of the best around. The 123m 12th named Wee Tap is a great hole. It only has a tiny green with bunkers and swales and can be tricky.” The beautifully manicured course, which runs alongside the vast blue water of the Indian Ocean, is a delight to play off the white tees. Still anyone up for the challenge, mentally and physically, should play it off the tips. The cost is $50 walking or $75 with cart.
FORMER US Open runner-up Stephen Leaney learnt his craft playing the 110-year-old course at Busselton Golf Club. Voted WA’s best regional golf facility in 2016, close to beautiful Geographe Bay and the world-renowned Busselton Jetty, and gateway to the wine region, it’s been rated a top-5 course to play outside of Perth. With bent grass greens and wellpresented fairways, the course stretches
to 6260m off the back tees for men and 5357m for women. Employing Western Australia’s Golf Course Superintendent of the Year (2017) Jonathan Leach, the club has cultivated a reputation for top-quality playing surfaces all year round. The carpet-like greens are true and fast and, with many undulations, make playing to your handicap an accomplishment. Still, most golfers can negotiate their way around the course without too much trouble although there is out-of-bounds on the left side of holes 10, 11, 12 and 13. If you do have a good round going, don’t lose concentration on the 401m par-4 18th. It can be a card destroyer. “You have to get a good drive away to make the green in two because there is trouble left and right,” says the course guide.

and casual golfers. The greens are rated amongst the best in the state. The club’s signature hole is the par3, 4th which is both picturesque and intimidating. At 167 metres (127m for women), the hole is quite deceptive due to the wind which can dictate a two or three club difference in club selections. Accuracy is the key to success as the undulating green is virtually surrounded by water hazards. The best piece of advice locals can give is “play safe”. Aim for the front of the green, take two putts and move swiftly to the next tee. Pinjarra Golf Club “Avoid the big bunker on the left-hand side of the green because the green slopes to the right. “The best birdie chances are at the 151m par-3 third hole, the 288m dogleg par-4 11th and the 153m 17th.” “Busselton is such a great members’ course,” said one member. “I have been a member for 25 years and never get tired of playing the golf course. “I have played a lot of courses and I’m happy to play Busselton every day of the week.” The course welcomes visitors, who can play 18 holes on Mondays for $25. All other days it’s $40. The club’s practice facilities include a 250m driving range, chipping and pitching green and a large putting green.
The newly renovated pro shop offers a large range of clothing, footwear and golf equipment. A new, state-of-the-art indoor golf simulator is in the pipeline so the occasional bad weather will never be a problem. It also makes booking an evening lesson with one of the club’s PGA professional coaches an option. The newly refurbished clubhouse is inviting, comfortable and a nice place to check your scorecard over a drink and a bite to eat.

The course is no one-hole wonder as it has a number of equally impressive holes, including the double-dogleg 490m (425m for women) par-5 18th hole. It’s a beauty. It’s one of those risk-and-reward holes that will leave you in two minds. If you produce a good drive then it’s decision time – “do I lay up short of the two water hazards (one on either side of the fairway) or do I go for glory and risk it all”. With the right conditions, the green is reachable in two but there is also tree protection on the right side of the green. Only the most precise approach will suffice. It’s a great finishing hole, but so are those before it – the 16th and 17th holes. The 343m (318m for women) par-4 16th dog-legs left, but it’s the two water hazards at driving distance that do come into play. Negotiate those and an undulating green awaits.

The 343m (317m for women) par-4 17th is not long but an off-centre tee box requires thought as it is Out of Bounds down the entire right side of the hole. Water right and behind the green and a bunker left guard the green. The four par-3s are terrific, with three of them having water carries while the 166m 15th has three bunkers as protection. The 127m par-3 second hole is the shortest, but looks can be deceiving. Water and bunkers front and right protect the generous-sized green. It looks easy enough, but many players have walked off shaking their heads in disappointment. General Manager, Phil Elliott said Pinjarra was a warm and friendly golf club that welcomed visitors. “Visitors are always welcome,” he said. “It’s an easy walking golf course that challenges players of all levels.” Membership packages are currently available with no nomination fee and include a range of flexible options to suit all golfing requirements. The flexi option is a pay-as-you-play, with a golf handicap and ability to play in club competitions and is ideal for shift and fly-in/fly-out workers. The practice facilities include a driving range, putting and chipping green and three practice bunkers. The comfortable clubhouse has bar facilities and the pro shop has a wide selection of equipment and apparel. Cart and club hire available.

Kooindah Waters Golf Club
Kooindah Waters Golf Club Ross Watson and Craig Parry had big plans when they designed Kooindah Waters Golf Club. Their brief was to create one of the best resort golf courses in the country and if public opinion is anything to go by, it looks like they duly delivered. A challenging 18-hole championship layout, Kooindah Waters is known as a “thinking golfer’s” course, with watery hazards in play on most holes, a considered approach is needed at this top 100 golf course. The layout could be described as rustic with unique sleeperwalled bunkering and a number of island greens that demand accuracy when approaching. The course also boasts
hundreds of species of birdlife that also call Kooindah Waters home. The club has a fleet of 60 golf carts, all fitted with GPS, and with cart paths on all 18 holes you can enjoy Kooindah in a cart all year round. The course has undergone some significant improvements recently with some new bunkering and drainage works as well as upgrades to the greens with a new strain of bent grass providing a more reliable putting surface no matter what type of weather Mother Nature throws at us. Mangrove Mountain Memorial Club and Golf Course
Mangrove Mountain Memorial Club IT’S certainly a ‘boast’ that Mangrove Mountain Memorial Club is rightly proud of. “We’re the best 13-hole golf course on the Central Coast”, they claim. And who could argue with such a claim . . . certainly not the proud band of Mangrove Mountain members who love making the most of their Central Coast facility. The go-ahead club now has membership available for a mere $1 a day and at this stage is the only club on the Central Coast to also introduce FootGolf to members and visitors, a derivate of the game that is beginning to take off around many courses by people who don’t have the time to even play 13 holes of golf on most days. For those who haven’t heard about it yet, FootGolf is a simple concept where you actually kick a football towards specificallydesigned holes in as few shots as possible. Certainly it has been hailed as a game that’s fun for the whole family and takes
just over an hour to play a round at a cost of about $11 for adults and just $6 for under 16s. And rather than languish over being just a 13-hole course, Mangrove Mountain has instead turned it into a winner. There are some great value seven-day memberships available for a mere $350 a year . . . not bad for a course that is a mere 10-minute drive from the Gosford CBD. Mangrove Mountain remains the perfect place to play a competitive game of golf on a challenging and rewarding golf course. Top-value deals also are available for social golf groups with packages beginning from as low as $18 a round and $30 for 18 holes with a cart.

Paradise Palms
– a tropical delight Nestled against the foothills of the McAllister Range with views of the Coral Sea, Paradise Palms golf course is a “must-play” layout.
P
aradise Palms golf course near Cairns is attracting plenty of attention, and deservedly so.
Wonderfully situated between two natural wonders, the Daintree World Heritage Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef, Paradise Palms offers golf at its thrilling and scenic best.
Over the years, Paradise Palms golf course, which has a slope rating of 139 off the back tees and 131 off the white tees, has been the venue of a number of major tournaments.
It’s easy to see why golfers boast Paradise Palms is the most spectacular and challenging golf course in North Queensland.
The back nine holes are now among the best anywhere and the 10th and 18th holes are in a class of their own.
The 6331m (blue markers) and 5791m (white tees) championship course offers a combination of sweeping fairways, creeks and lakes, narrow undulating greens and 72 bunkers to keep you interested and your concentration levels high.
The well-manicured, lush fairways and Tiff Dwarf greens add to the pleasure of the challenge and the heavily forested McAllister Range and the Coral Sea are never far from view. Plus, as the facility is professionally managed by Troon Golf, guests at Paradise Palms always enjoy a high-quality, worldclass experience.
What is especially nice is the course has an intimate charm that gives the feeling you have the place to yourself.
Paradise Palms is a “cart only” golf course and with the Club Car fleet fitted with Visage GPS, golfers will leave the course feeling invigorated and ready to enjoy the luxury 4.5-star resort.
There are three lakes that come into play and all are stocked with barramundi, but don’t get any crazy ideas. They are ‘no fishing’ zones.
Still, there are choices. Does one lounge poolside or head for the restaurant to feast on the fresh local cuisine? Paradise Palms has a history dating back to January 1990 when the Graham Marsh and Ross Watson-designed course opened to much fanfare. It didn’t take long for it to gain a reputation for its quality, desirability and strength. Marsh and Watson’s brief was to build a championship golf course that would test not just amateurs but also the best players in the world and judging by the challenge and degree of difficulty they certainly delivered. Mind you, there are four tee positions that allow players of all levels to choose their own challenge.
Tim Elliott
No one will forget the Skins match in 1990 between Greg Norman, Curtis Strange, Bernhard Langer and Isao Aoki.
Despite recently swapping the front and back nine holes, Paradise Palms remains enchanting and full of energy.
Here, you detour through the rainforest, which provides an exhilarating backdrop to a round.
Paul Hayden
There are no shared fairways and although there are other groups out there, you hardly ever see them.
Driving, as you would expect on any championship course, is strategic while the approach shots call for accuracy … sometimes courage. Paradise Palms has long had a reputation for being an informal and welcoming club, and the clubhouse, if not an architectural gem, boasts one of the best bars and restaurants in TNQ. And when you stay-and-play at Paradise Palms, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find everyone is friendly and there isn’t a whiff of elitism to be found anywhere. For more information: Phone (07) 4059-9999, pro shop (07) 4059-9901 or resort (07) 4059-9900. Email: info@paradisepalms.com.au or visit the website www.paradisepalms.com.au •
Trio tie at Cairns Classic Damien Jordan and Paul Hayden were declared joint winners of the Ladbrokes PGA Pro-Am Series Sunshine Swing Cairns Classic, played at Paradise Palms. Tim Elliott charged home to claim the PGA Legends Tour Cairns Classic title. Hayden held the overnight lead after firing a six under par 65. He followed that up with a two over par 73, to post a tournament total of four under. Jordan knew what he had to do at the start of his round and even though the course played at its hardest in the afternoon, a three under par 68 to go with his opening round 70 was good enough to match the total set by Hayden. “The course was set up tough today, the pins where difficult which made it really hard to get the ball close to the hole”, said Hayden. “My iron play wasn’t quite as sharp as yesterday, but I guess the conditions certainly played its part in today’s round as well.”
“Although somewhat disappointed with my round when I walked off today, it’s pretty satisfying to walk away with the win alongside Damien.” Starting the day one shot behind overnight leader Mike Zilko, Elliott shot the equal low round of the day to win by four shots from Tod Power. Elliott’s round of three under par 68 gave him a four under par total, finishing four shots ahead of Power, who was looking for his first win of the year. “It’s been a number of years since I have visited Paradise Palms and until Friday, I didn’t remember how difficult the course plays,” said Elliott. “I did play well, but it was definitely my putter that kept the momentum going for me in today’s round.” Breanna Gill followed on from her opening round to secure the ALPG Cairns Classic on even par, finishing five shots ahead of her nearest competitor in Jessica Cowie. Pro-Am golf, exotic South Pacific destination By Richard Ellis
T
here is a new golfing treasure in the Pacific Islands at Bourail in New Caledonia. About two hour’s drive north of Noumea airport, set on a pristine white sand beach is the new Sheraton Deva Resort. No expense has been spared here with this $250 million development. I was invited to go to New Caledonia almost a year ago to look at this new golf resort, one thing led to another and I eventually got to make the trip a couple of months ago. I wish I had gone earlier. What a surprise! Beautiful 18-hole Dye-designed championship golf course, fantastic spa and a remarkable hotel. After meeting with the president of the hotel company that owns the Resort plus the 5-star Meridien Hotels in Noumea and Isle of Pines, I said “you need to tell everyone about this great golf course and resort”. I suggested one good way to do this is put on a big pro-am tournament, bring in some top professionals, overseas amateurs plus some local players. here are about 150 golf links in the world and Great Britain has the best of them, with the most exciting dunes and exhilarating golf designs matured through the years. A links is the oldest style of golf course, first developed in Scotland. The word “links” comes via the Scots language from the Old English word hlinc: “rising ground, ridge” and refers to an area of coastal sand dunes. Golf on the links is by far the most exciting form of the game. The Open Championship is always played on ‘Links’ and on the Great Links of Britain Cruise you will play five ‘Open’

The tour begins with a three-night stay in Canterbury playing Royal Cinque Ports and Princes Golf Club before boarding the five-star Royal Princess. After traversing the northern tip of Scotland you will play Peter Thomson’s favourite traditional links course at Brora before a pilgrimage to St. Andrews and a game on the Jubilee course. Silversea – Monaco to Venice Golf Cruise

ollowing numerous client requests to include Sicily on their golf cruises, Trendsetter Travel has recently released its 15-day May 2018 Monaco to Venice itinerary which includes games at two of Sicily’s top 5 courses, including the island’s #1 golf course, Verdura East. Opened in 2009, the designer of Verdura East was Kyle Phillips (of Kingsbarn’s fame). While the ship is berthed at Taormina for 14 hours, golf will also be played at Il Picciolo Golf Club. The hill-side town of Taormina, located on the east coast of Sicily, is the number one ranked tourist destination in Sicily. The 15-night cruise is on Silver Whisper, the 382 passenger luxury inclusive ship, one of the 9 luxury vessels of the Silversea cruise line. Appreciating that participants on its golf cruises have differing expectations of the optimal amount of golf to play and which ports to golf at, Trendsetter Travel allows each participant to choose between a minimum of 6 games and a maximum of 9 games. Choosing less than the maximum of 9 games will not be an easy decision with so many great courses included in the itinerary. In Corsica and Sardinia, the tour

The other two Italian courses are Circolo Golf Ugolino, the oldest golf course in Italy and Circolo Golf e Tennis Rapallo.
plays two Robert Trent Jones designed courses, both built alongside rugged coast lines. Golf de Sperone in Corsica is located on a picturesque peninsula and arguably offers as good a run of ocean holes as Pebble Beach and Cypress Point. Sardinia’s Pevero Golf Club sits on the Costa Smeralda and was commissioned by the Aga Khan. The setting for Pevero Golf Club is magical with its construction on a rocky ridge like peninsula offers stunning views of the Mediterranean and the distant mountains. Only one game of golf will be played
on France’s Cote d’Azur – however, it is played at Royal Mougins, regarded as the best of the many excellent courses on the French Riviera. A special feature of the cruise is a 13 hour port stop at historic Malta. There is time in the morning to explore the historic fortress city of Valetta made famous during WWII. In the afternoon golf is scheduled at the famous and private Royal Malta Golf Club. With the above six not-to-be-missed courses, Trendsetter Travel also includes three additional games on the Italian
Apart from the great golf itinerary, a feature of the cruise are the particularly long shore days which in most ports allow an opportunity to explore the port towns while still including a game of golf. As for all Trendsetter’s luxury golf cruises, golf is competitively priced at less than 40% of the price per round charged by the leading USA golf cruise operators and the price of a cabin on board Silver Whisper is subject to a 10% discount for early prepayments. hile the emergence of online bookings for airlines, hotels, rental cars, and even tee times has made the process of booking a golf holiday more accessible, it doesn’t necessarily mean organising your next golf holiday is any easier; especially if it is to a destination that you have not previously visited and are therefore not familiar with. But it doesn’t have to be so hard as there are a number of golf travel operators who can do all of the work for
you and be your single point of contact as opposed to having to deal with a lot of different people and businesses. And, if you find the right operator, it doesn’t have to cost you any more than if you organised the trip yourself. Just like you may go to your local travel agent to organise that trip to Europe or that cruise to the Caribbean, why not let a golf travel agent help organise your next golf holiday? Not only do they have access to airline and hotel rates that are
....and Jack’s Point (NZ) lower than those you can access, but they also have access to lower rates at golf properties along with an in-depth knowledge of those destinations. Whether it be your annual social golf weekend away at one of the many great domestic destinations including Barnbougle, King Island, the Mornington Peninsula and the Gold Coast, or a longer holiday abroad in New Zealand, or the most talked-about new destination in Asia … Vietnam, why not let a specialist with the skills
and experience take the hassle out of booking your next golf trip. One of those specialists is Exclusive Sports Travel, so why not speak to one of their team who can provide great advice and do all the planning work for you, and it won’t cost you any more than if you booked it yourself. Natadola Bay design on track for Pro debut N
atadola Bay Championship Golf Course was a hidden gem in the South Pacific but over the past four years has captured the attention of the world thanks to hosting the Fiji International. Building a reputation as a picturesque and challenging layout, which requires an abundance of shots to be played successfully, Natadola Bay GC is enjoyed by everyone who plays it.
then modify it again if needed,” added Langford-Jones. “That is basically what has happened with Natadola. After three years of playing tournament golf it was obvious that some changes needed to be made and they are being made now.” With alterations being made to the green complexes as well as re-positioning of the teeing grounds which has a flow-on effect to the landing zones, the re-design will benefit Tour Professionals playing the Fiji International as well as amateur golfers who tee it up whilst on holidays in Fiji.
Speaking post tournament in 2016, Singh wasted no time in putting forward his ideas for the re-design. “I started on Monday after the tournament. The architect came with me and we’re going to do the first eight holes and probably six and seven greens,” Singh said. “We will look to re-do the greens, some of the fairways and some of the bunkers to make it more playable.”
However it’s receiving a makeover thanks to three-time Major Champion, Vijay Singh, who was involved with some of the course’s original design.
Since then the scope of the redevelopment has expanded with some element of work being done on 15 of the 18 holes.
His vision is to take the bones of an exceptional layout and finesse the finer details so that it can reach its full potential.
“It always was a very good course. But in the last month of the original build an enormous storm compromised the
design with a number of the greens being washed out meaning they weren’t built as was originally designed,” said Andrew Langford-Jones, the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia Tournament Director for the Fiji International. “This redevelopment is going to be a dramatic improvement on what was already a good course.”
“For the Pros, I think it will be a fairer test of golf. Some of the ridges in the greens have been eliminated which has resulted in more pin positions on each green,” added Langford-Jones. “But the best thing to come out of the re-design is that the greens are friendlier to players of all standards.
Re-designs of golf courses are not uncommon; designers are constantly making subtle changes to improve the playability of layouts.
“The jungle is still the jungle; it has been cut back in a number of areas which will also make it easier for amateurs. Plus the landing zones have been significantly increased in area so it is much more userfriendly for the amateur golfer.”
“At TPC Sawgrass, which hosts THE PLAYERS on the PGA TOUR, they have just re-done the 12th hole. The comments have been that they will play this year’s tournament, see how it plays and
The Fiji International will be played at Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course from 17-20 August and is tri-sanctioned by the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia, European Tour and Asian Tour. •

t has been more than thirty years in waiting, as the various sections have been patched together for the long promised motorway from Sydney to Brisbane. The new expressway from the Gold Coast to Ballina, complete with tunnels through the mountains, opened last year and created a whole new level of accessibility to both Brisbane and the Gold Coast for the Byron Bay region. The region is now flanked by the international airport on the Gold Coast and less than an hour’s drive down the new expressway, a major regional airport at Ballina. Tourists are the big winners with competition driving airfares down and hire car tariffs plummeting. This has coincided with the coming of age of a group of golf courses in the region, setting exemplary standards in course design, presentation and conditioning. The area, long having been a Mecca for retirees, has seen these golf clubs stay financially stable and re-invest in the primary asset - their golf course. Ballina and Murwillumbah, despite the costs (reputed to be around $40,000 each year) over-sow their Bermuda 328 greens every autumn with a special Poa Annua variety and for eight months of the year can boast to have some of the best-performing golf greens in the country. Every golfer should experience them at some time as they have just the right amount of holding power, run perfectly true and can be very fast. Both these Parkland courses have developed into “Must Play” status in recent times and Ballina in particular is renowned as the best conditioned course in the region. the focal point of their community overlooking their wonderful golf course to the West and the Pacific Ocean to the East. They have also continued improving their course condition and all greens are now a high performing TifEagle Bermuda variety. The Bruce Devlin & Robert von Hagge design retains its status as one of the most challenging designs in Australia with water coming into play on almost every hole and bunkers protecting the huge greens. Any serious golfer must play this course at some time in their life. Byron Bay Golf Course well deserves the award for the most improved in the region. Extended from a nine-hole course about 25 years ago the new look course saw rapid changes in the last ten years, courtesy of a large cash injection from Gerry Harvey when he built the Byron at Byron Resort across the road and struck a deal with the club to resolve some waste water issues. This was a win/win for the club and it now has a terrific layout and far improved conditioning. The course has become known nationally in recent years as the venue for the PGA Australian Legends Tour Championship hosted every December and featuring some of our greatest Australian legends including Ian Baker Finch and Peter Senior. Coolangatta-Tweed Heads has long been recognised as an outstanding golf facility with two 18 hole courses – the River Course and the newer West Course. The Coolangatta-Tweed Heads course was once a venue for many big time Australian professional golf tournaments. Gary Player regularly toured Australia back in the 60’s and 70’s and included the 12th and 13th holes on the River course in a book about his favourite holes in the world and they both still hold up
The first hole at Ballina GC as outstanding tests. The course has recently invested heavily in their greens and now the bent greens that have always been doubtful in our sub-tropical climate have been replaced with a far better performing Bermuda 328 variety. You will not be disappointed with the outstanding layout and condition of either course when you play here. Each of these golf clubs welcome visitors. However, they are in high demand for their own member competitions. This is where Lennox Beach Resort has found their niche in the market. Managed by keen golfers Judy and Steve Woodfield, the resort is located in the hub of the Northern Rivers in a gorgeous little beachside surfing village called Lennox Head, within easy driving distance of all the courses and both airports. With 40 quality four-star apartments surrounded by restaurants and cafes forming the “Eat Street” for the area this is the prime location for a golfing holiday base. Speak to Steve or
