icking up passengers at Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport is always a struggle if you are trying to avoid the high (some say exorbitant) short-term parking fees. Recent reconfigurations of the pick-up zone has made this easier, but the “One Minute Parking” limit creates a bit of a timing circus, as you are forced to either battle for a spot at the nearby McDonalds, or battle traffic congestion while you do laps waiting for your passenger to collect their baggage, etc. Unknown to many, however, is that there is a free “Ring & Ride” carpark zone in the long-term carpark. The first 20 minutes of parking is free (20-40 minutes is just $2, 40-60 minutes is $4), allowing you to wait for your passenger to ring you on your mobile when ready. From there, it is only a 2-3 minute drive to the pickup zone.

Pacific Dunes has established a reputation for providing a unique golfing experience on the 18-hole championship golf course, featuring two very distinct nine holes. Ideally located on a natural sandy base and rolling topography, the course

showcases a native woodland backdrop in the opening nine holes and stunning wetland in the back nine. Designed by renowned course architect James Wilcher, the layout uses strategic placement of bunker and water hazards to create a golf course that is extremely playable to the

average golfer, whilst still challenging to low handicappers. Visitors to Pacific Dunes will experience some of the finest playing surfaces in Australia amongst other facilities such as the Dunes Cafe & Bar, fully-stocked golf shop and the function facilities.

Whether you choose the Hunter Valley, Newcastle or Port Stephens you will have hit on a region rich in golfing treasures. Pacific Dunes

The superior standard of the course is reflected in the current rankings of which the club advertises very proudly: 55th in Golf Digest’s Top 100, 71st in Golf Australia’s Top 100 and 31st in Golf Australia’s Top 100 Public Access Courses! Located in the picturesque Port

Newcastle Golf Club

For as long as anyone can remember, leading golfers and golf course designers have been singing the praises of Newcastle Golf Club – and rightly so. Close to the sand dunes of Stockton

CLUB members entering the pro shop at Hawks Nest Golf Club at Port Stephens are looking twice, rubbing their eyes and looking again to make sure they aren’t seeing things. Standing behind the pro shop counter is an unfamiliar face – that of 27-year-old Andrew McCormack, who is the club’s new head professional. Long-time members are so used to seeing a slightly older Steve Denning staring back at them, but he recently pulled the pin after 30 years in the job. Andrew doesn’t have his feet under the desk yet, but he’s already making changes and plans that will benefit the members and visitors alike. Originally from Charlestown (near Newcastle, NSW), Andrew started work on July 1. “I did my traineeship at Charlestown Golf Club and when I finished in 2010, I moved to the Mornington Peninsula for a couple of years,” he told Inside Golf. “I worked at Riversdale for a short while but mostly I was playing down there.” Before arriving at Hawks Nest Golf Club, Andrew was running a golf driving range at Cardiff in Newcastle. “I spent two years there honing my coaching skills,” he said. “I am really pleased to be at Hawks Nest Golf Club, which has an outstanding 18-hole championship golf course.

“One of my priorities is to grow the junior membership and membership in general to ensure the club’s future. “I’m big on coaching and want to strengthen the membership by bringing new golfers to the club. “There will be more clinics for men, women and juniors and from a retail point of view I will have launch monitors as well as an improved fitting service for the members and visitors.” Hawks Nest has modern clubhouse facilities and an easy-walking golf course. Golfers of all levels are always welcome. They will enjoy the challenge of the golf course, the tranquillity of the natural bush setting and the abundance of wildlife and native flora. Situated on the north shore of Port Stephens between the Myall River and the Pacific Ocean, Hawks Nest is an hour’s drive north of Newcastle Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest is a major tourist centre in the Great Lakes region.

Newcastle Golf Club

Beach, Newcastle Golf Club has ranked in the top-20 courses in the nation for more than 10 years. The late, great Norman von Nida even reckoned it was one of the best courses in the world while four-time Open Championship winner Bobby Locke considered some of the holes the finest he had ever played. And one of the game leading golf course architects, Tom Doak, was so impressed with the fifth (368m), sixth

6

INSIDE GOLF TRAVEL | August 2014

(367m) and seventh (148m) holes he even documented them in his book Confidential Guide to Golf Courses. Doak raved about the course and described it as a “hidden gem”. He rated the par-3 seventh hole as one of the best 18 holes in his “rest of the world” ratings outside the United States and the British Isles. Players have to thread their tee shot through a chute of tall trees and then avoid bunkers short right and long left.

If you do miss the green, you’ll have your work cut out making par. Alex Mercer, Steve Elkington’s coach, too, is a big fan of the golf course. When he played there, he described it as one of the few great natural layouts left – anywhere. The perfectly presented championship golf course is carved out of sclerophyll forest on undulating sand dunes with each hole having its own individual character.

The rolling couch fairways are bordered by majestic eucalyptus and angophoras towering out of white sandy soil creating a feeling of isolation when playing each hole. The club’s first greenkeeper Fred Popplewell, winner of the Australian Open in 1925 and 1928, built the first nine holes in 1915. Eric Apperly then designed 18 holes, keeping seven of Popplewell’s nine, with the full layout opened in 1937. The golf course certainly has stood the test of time and tends to play longer due to the elevated greens and well-grassed fairways. From the back tees, it’s tough but because it’s a world-class layout, with no two holes alike, players keep coming back for more. The clubhouse provides a great feeling of tradition surrounding Newcastle with historic prints and trophy cabinets displaying memorabilia of bygone eras. Once you have played Newcastle, you’ll want to come back again and again. Newcastle Golf Club Vardon Rd, Fern Bay, NSW 2295 02 4928 1365 www.newcastlegolf.com.au

Belmont Golf Club

A former Belmont Golf Club president, Bernard S. Kemp, once described the club as a happy and welcoming golf club. He also said nature had provided the club with many assets including a great climate, an easy walking links course and an almost unlimited water supply for growth. Well, he was right on all accounts. This year the popular club, located on the southern fringe of Newcastle, celebrates its 60th anniversary and in that time has grown from swampy scrub to an internationallyrecognised championship course. The Lake Macquarie International Championship has been attracting the cream of the amateur crop since 1958. Major winners like Mark O’Meara, Steve Elkington and Vijay Singh have graced the fairways. Other big names who have walked in their footsteps include Colin Montgomerie, Luke Donald, Paul Casey, Jack Newton, Rodger Davis, Peter O’Malley, Robert Allenby, Geoff Ogilvy, Stuart Appleby and others. One of the reasons the world’s best golfers (men and women) keep turning up to play Belmont is because the course is well-regarded. Over the years, the club has continued to make improvements to the golf course and in the future will look to establish

Belmont Golf Club

new holes on the northern end of the course along the beach. Belmont has four challenging par-3s including the 155m fifth which was redesigned by Jack Newton. With deep bunkers short right and long left, it requires good club selection to an elevated green. Because of its shape, the hole offers some challenging pin positions. The par-5 ninth is a testing hole of 482m off the white tees and requires a courageous tee shot because there’s water along the entire left side. The second shot doesn’t get any easier with hazards left and trees right and the

green, which has a hump in the middle, is protected by two bunkers right. The signature hole is the 401m par-4 15th. Running parallel with Pacific Ocean, it demands a near-perfect tee shot because there’s danger in the form of bush on the left and right. The fast green is protected by two bunkers left and requires care to study the subtle slopes. The par-5 16th hole has had a new green constructed, lengthening the hole from 432m to 500m off the white tees. There are strategically-placed fairway bunkers left and right and the third shot

is to an elevated green with subtle slopes protected by bunkers left and right. A demanding hole with a majestic outlook. If watching the recent Open Championship whets your appetite for links golf, make a bee-line for Belmont Golf Club, which is located two hours north of Sydney between Lake Macquarie and the Pacific Ocean. Stonebridge Golf Club

Stonebridge Golf Club

Stonebridge Golf Club is the Hunter Valley’s newest 18-hole championship course. Designed by local golfing master, Jack Newton, this 18-hole Par-72, 6,127m layout offers unique challenges to all golfing enthusiasts. In particular is the course’s signature 18th hole, a memorable par-3 playing over a tranquil lake, as well as the stone bridge directing golfers over the water and onto a picturesque green. Perfection to a tee. “I’m really proud of the whole course design. Every hole has a new tee, fairway shaping, bunkering and a new green” Jack Newton said. There’s a good balance of holes for the serious, as well as the casual golfer.” 12 months older, and despite heavy traffic, the course has seen huge

improvements in a short time. The club is currently undertaking a winter regeneration plan, which includes upgrading all tee surfaces and aerating fairways. As a result, the course will be in peak condition come spring and it is hoped that the course will rival any other in the area. Stonebridge Clubhouse will offer members and guests a range of excellent facilities including a clubhouse with a fully stocked Golf Shop, a cafe and a bar overlooking the 18th green for you to enjoy a beverage after your round. Membership starts from $295 year. Stonebridge Golf Members will not only enjoy this fabulous location but will also enjoy all the club has to offer, from access to the Jack Newton course, privileged use of the contemporary clubhouse and

relaxing bar and cafe. The combination of a great course design set within a backdrop of the Hunter Valley wine region will make this an appealing destination for locals and travellers alike. The course will again be the home of the new Jack Newton Srixon Junior Classic. Ranked in the Top 50 Golf Courses in Australia for Under $50, Nelson Bay Golf Club is one of the Hunter Valley’s most popular courses. Host of the 2013 NSW Mid Amateur Championships, the 27-hole championship course is set among native trees with an abundance of wildlife like kangaroos, wallabies, koalas and native birds. Originally an 18-hole course, the facility proved so popular with tourists and locals alike that a further 9 holes were added in the adjoining bushland in 1998, resulting in a spectacular facility that features some truly magnificent holes. Golf in America’s Southwest:

Scottsdale, Arizona

Home to more than 200 golf courses – ranging from the traditional links to the ultra-tough desert designs, the city of Scottsdale, Arizona, is widely regarded as a premier destination for golf in the U.S. Richard Fellner

“Water Chant”), which is a 495-yard par-5 monster that precariously wraps around a large ball-grabbing lake on the left. Lest you think you can bail out on the right, be aware that you would then have to contend with a thicket of flesh-grabbing cactus (or “cacti”, if you want to be pedantic.).There are even some types of cactus (like the Jumping Cholla Cactus) with needles that will literally jump onto you. We’re not joking.

S

cottsdale is one of America’s premier destinations for golf. Nestled in the shadows of Camelback Mountain, the city features some of the nation’s trickier layouts, notably Troon North, Grayhawk Golf Club and the Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale -- home of the Waste Management Phoenix Open, which attracts over 500,000 people to the 4-day event.

Legend at Arrowhead

While the average golfer/tourist will struggle to get a tee-time at Scottsdale’s upper echelon courses, there are plenty of world-class tracks in the area -- each full of challenge, character and that famous Arizona desert scenery.

The course is generally a slicer’s nightmare. Push it right and you’ll find yourself in the “wash” – a desert wasteland that will haunt you for years.

We thoroughly enjoyed Legend Trail, and will definitely return. www.legendtrailgc.com

Stonecreek (Phoenix) The picture says it all. Lush, green fairways, heavily contoured rough, plenty of hazards and stunning views. You can’t ask for much more. Except for an extra dozen balls prior to teeing off, as you’ll be certain to need them. Originally a Pete Dye design (redesigned by Arthur Hills in 1987), this 6,871-yard, par-71 layout is a joy to play. By “joy” I don’t necessarily mean “easy”. Not in the least. After a quick birdie on the par-4 first, the “teeth” of the course were suddenly bared, and I found myself carding bogey after successive bogey – and worse, especially on the 181-yard par-3 third, which features a bunker so large that I swear I could see camels crossing it in the distance. By the end of the round, my scorecard was a dog’s breakfast (and the dog gave it a miss.)

Legend Trail

Stonecreek Assuming you can get your ball out of it by then. But if you can hit the ball straight you will generally be ok; that is, if you can clear the many bunkers and lakes that protect the sloping greens. The staff in the pro shop – and the aptly named Up the Creek restaurant – were extremely welcoming and friendly, and the practice facilities were superb. The course is managed by Eagle Golf, which operates 75 courses across the US. Overall, a fantastic Arizona golf experience. www.stonecreekgc.com

Legend Trail Golf Club (Scottsdale) Part of the Scottsdale Golf Group – which operates a variety of great courses including Red Mountain Ranch, Painted Mountain GC, Corte Bella GC and Hillcrest GC, Legend Trail is a Rees Jones design that has been rated 4.5/5 stars for “Best places to play”. And it’s no wonder why. On our visit we were treated to some of the most amazing views imaginable, as well as some truly challenging golf. At 6,845 yards, the par-72 course features wide fairways, tightly-guarded greens and a variety of five tee boxes to keep all levels of player happy.

Legend at Arrowhead (Glendale) We ended our trip with a visit to The Legend at Arrowhead, a 6,986-yard, Arnold Palmer design which is also managed by Eagle Golf. Playing with the Arizona Lawmen’s golf group (tip: never gamble against an ex-policeman), we were treated to a thoroughly enjoyable round of golf with that tremendous Arizona hospitality and character. Set among a collection of lakes, palm trees and some 61 bunkers, this course had more doglegs than an Alaskan Iditarod team. But that only adds to the enjoyment, as you are forced to carefully consider the hole from the tee, and choose your landing zones accordingly. The standout hole would certainly be the par-4 fifth hole, a 431-yarder from an elevated tee that doglegs slightly (of course) to sloping green that is well guarded by bunkers and a truly massive lake. Tip: get your ball-retriever ready before you tee off. A great way to end the trip, and say “adios” to Arizona. www.legendatarrowhead.com

Australian Living Golfing History:

Ratho Farm Golf Links 1822 Bob Davies (AKA Scottish Bob)

I

n the very early 1800s the new colony of what was then Van Diemen’s land was being colonised and farmland was also being sought after by the upper classes of landowning Scots, Irish, English and Welsh. In those very early days it was then the tradition that the eldest son would inherit the land and property, the second eldest son would join the military, the third son would join the church and the remaining offspring would be packed off to the new colonies with only the inheritance that could be spared. Alexander Reid of the Ratho Bank estate

just west of Edinburgh had seen his elder brothers inherit the land, join the military and the church, so he decided that he and his wife Mary with daughter Jane and infant son Alec would travel to Van Diemen’s land on the ship “The Castle Forbes” in search of a better life and future for his family. After being granted land on the Upper Clyde River north of Hobart in the highland wilderness, they and other families who had also emigrated from the east coast of Scotland banded together to settle in a wee village called Bothwell. Thus, in the year of 1822 Ratho Farm was established. Before Alexander left Scotland he was

a successful merchant in Edinburgh’s port town of Leith. His office was just a chip shot away from the famous Leith Links where the first golf societies were formed and the laws and rules of the game of golf were formalised. Many of the Reids’ new neighbours were from the golfing communities of St Andrews, Leith, Carnoustie, and Aberdeen, so it was only a matter of time before these Scottish settlers would start to play golf around the grounds of their new properties and set themselves out some sort of golf course. After many years of hard and backbreaking work (some of them profitable)

in 1837 Alexander Reid decided to head back home to Scotland to give his children a better education. During his absence he organized the renowned artist John Glover to visit Ratho Farm and paint it. The Reid family stayed in Scotland until 1840 and arrived back at Ratho Farm in 1842. Alexander Reid II (also known as “Alec”) lived all his adult life improving Ratho Farm and raising his family. He also brought the 1882 Melbourne cup winner The Assyrian to Ratho to stud; the horse won the Cup at the nice odds of 33-1 and won by ½ length. He peaked as a five-year-old also winning the TRC Hobart

Cup, The TTC Derwent Cup, and the A-C Autumn Stakes.

Alec Reid died in 1881 and was succeeded by his son Alexander Reid III who then carried on the family tradition of improving the Ratho Farm by introducing a Red Bull cattle stud as well as a poultry

stud. Alexander was very interested and active in formalising social golf in his surrounding area into a golf club. He then hosted James Herd from St Andrews, the younger brother of US Open Champion Fred Herd and British Open Champion Sandy Herd. James is now recognised

as Ratho Farm Golf Links’ first golf professional. In 1935 Alexander Reid III sold the Ratho farm by auction to Mr Alexander Stenhouse who was also a Scottish emigrant and very successful businessman and keen fly fisherman who

Greg Ramsay and his staff are making major renovations to the course, including the resurrection of the unused six holes. An additional six holes will make the Ratho Golf Links an 18-hole links golf course. In keeping with the heritage of the early years, there will be bunkers, hedges, rock walls and veggie gardens as well as the sheep yards all coming into play in this exciting course. Just imagine the amazing experience of visiting the Ratho Farm Golf Links by coach or car (just a couple of hours’ drive from Hobart) to play a round of golf that was in use nearly 200 years ago and then stay in the Convict cottages, wake up in the morning and decide to go fly fishing. Oh, what a life!

bought the farm for the security of his granddaughters. When Mr Stenhouse passed away in 1948 the farm was passed down to his two granddaughters until their death. Richard and Mary Ramsay (the granddaughter of Alexander Stenhouse) took over the lease to Ratho farm in 1982 and have continued to improve Ratho Farm right up until today. Four generations of the Reid family have played golf on the Ratho Links as have four generations of the Ramsay family right back to Alexander Stenhouse. Ratho Farm Golf Links is the oldest golf course in Australia and also the oldest golf course outside of Scotland. The Ratho

Links is a time capsule and is amongst the best preserved of all the early golf courses of the world. Its most apparent uniqueness is the sheep that graze and keep the playing areas short. Fences are put up to stop the sheep from grazing on the square greens. Other Scottish settlers had also built golf courses in the surrounding areas of the Scottish valley, and in a rare arrangement, the Bothwell golf club initially rotated its golf events around all four golf courses. Ratho’s pedigree still shines clearly from the early days of the featherie ball and the long-nose woods, and shares many similarities with other early golf courses around the world. Another legacy is that

the tees are hard up against the greens; this originated from the rule of grabbing a pinch of sand out of the hole you had just putted so that you could tee off. As well as maintaining its originality it still plays like the early golf courses—the absence of automatic watering systems preserves the varying challenges throughout the seasons; hard and fast in the summer and frosty and firm in the winter. Like Prestwick GC in Scotland, Ratho’s layout had just 12 holes, six running north of the shearing shed and six running south towards the village and then turning to finish near the homestead’s back door. The latter six holes were not used for over 50 years.

Greg Ramsay and all his staff must be very proud of their achievements bringing Ratho Farm Golf Links into the 21st century and yet still maintaining the heritage of their forefathers, this prestigious links course is surely ready to entice other golfers from all over Australia and well as other parts of the world to a very unique experience. I am certain that the four generations of the Reid and Ramsay families would be very proud of what has been achieved by everyone involved and the legacy they have left for others like myself who just love this great game of golf with all its history. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Darren and everyone connected to Ratho Farm Golf Links for allowing me to use parts of their history, for without their kindness I could not have written this short story. •

Each hole has its own personality, its own challenges, whether you’re playing up blind hills and around tight dog legs in the front nine, or down narrow fairways with deep gullies on either side on the back nine. This is not the golf-safari that you normally associate with Southern Africa, writes DAVID NEWBERY

M

ENTION the small Southern African country of Swaziland to some golf travellers and wait for the demented stare. Finally, they say, “You’re going on a golfing holiday to where?” To golfers used to the familiarity of holiday destinations like Scotland, Ireland, New Zealand, Asia, the USA or South Africa, the Kingdom of Swaziland seems to fall outside their comfort zone. But Swaziland is a worthwhile alternative as a side trip to South Africa and besides, I enjoying exploring new, off-the-beatentrack destinations. Located just 35 minutes by air from Johannesburg, Swaziland offers first-class resort-style facilities, big game safaris and championship golf. Affectionately known as the Valley of Heaven, Swaziland is a landlocked country bordered to the north, south and west by South Africa and to the east by Mozambique. South Africans particularly enjoy holidaying in Swaziland because of its oldworld African traditions and beliefs, and because they know they can travel safely throughout the country -- which makes

the stay special and unforgettable. I stayed at the Sun Internationalmanaged Royal Swazi Spa Valley, which is a friendly, luxurious, pampering retreat. The hotel has a casino, large pool, gym, health spa, tennis courts and bowling green. There’s even a hairdresser, bank, shops, florist, doctor, pharmacy, boutique, news agent and more.

This is the ideal base for golfers because the Royal Swazi Golf Club is just a nineiron from the hotel’s front door. Itching for a game of golf, I head for the golf club only to discover a group of about 20 South Africans preparing to tee off. The Johannesburg-based Old Farts Golf Club makes the trek to Swaziland every year to play for their club’s open title. “We have been coming here every year

for many years,” one player tells me. “We like Swaziland because it’s serene and you have a choice of three wonderful hotels (Royal Swazi Spa, Ezulwini Sun and Lugogo Sun) within walking distance of the golf course. The facilities are fantastic.” And, as I discover, he’s right. The 18-hole championship golf course is a wonderful challenge as some tight fairways call for accurate approach shots, but the par-72 layout opens up enough places to give terrific views of the mountain ranges. The first nine holes are comparatively flat, but the second nine fully exploits the mountainous terrain. Lakes, gullies thick with vegetation, outof-bounds areas running close to fairways,

The Sun International-managed Royal Swazi Spa Valley wickedly-sited bunkers (one of which is so steep that railway sleeper steps have been provided to facilitate access) and swirling breezes are all part of the challenge. Golf clubs and golf carts are available for hire, but I recommend taking a caddie. You’ll find the caddies are good value when it comes to local knowledge and they have a knack of finding your golf ball – no matter how far wide you hit it. Golf travellers seeking a holiday with a difference will enjoy Swaziland’s rich and colourful history.

The country provides myriad activities including excellent wildlife reserves where you can see elephant, rhino, leopard, hippo, giraffe and more in the wild. Game viewing is via open Land Rover, while self-guided tours are available. With golf and game viewing out of the way I was keen to explore the northern region of Piggs Peak and the Maguga Dam. It’s the mountainous part of the country with lush forests and fertile valleys. It was raining but I didn’t mind one bit,

An elephant leads its young into the bush so picturesque were the surroundings. The dam is spectacular and has a wall height of 115 metres. Opened in 2002, it has become a major tourist attraction and the Maguga Lodge is the perfect place to stop for Sibebe premium lager and a meal while enjoying the vista from the rustic deck. Other Swaziland highlights include white water rafting, historical caves, art and craft markets, a candle factory and a glass factory where you can see the Swazi glass blowers exercising their skills. I found the Swazi people to be warm, friendly and well-mannered. And if you take the time to enquire about their well-being and learn a few basic phrases, you will be rewarded with appreciative smiles and plenty of respect. FOOTNOTE: Swaziland is an autonomous nation, but the South African influence is evident. Manzini, the capital city, is home to 70,000 people and was previously named Bremersdorp after entrepreneur Albert Bremer, who arrived in the area in the 1880s. Bremersdorp was the country’s capital under South African’s Transvaal administration, which was superseded by British rule in 1903 at the end of the Boer War. •

Getting there South African Airways offers 11 services a week from Sydney and Perth to Johannesburg with connecting flights to Swaziland and other African destinations. The business class seat aboard South African Airways is luxurious and easily folds down into a comfortable, horizontal bed. I could easily stretch out for a good sleep on a proper pillow on the long-haul flight. And the service is super friendly and attentive. www.flysaa.com Accommodation The author was a guest of the Sun International group and stayed at the Royal Swazi Spa in the Ezulwini Valley. The Royal Swazi Spa has 149 rooms including standard twin, standard king, luxury rooms, family rooms, suites and a royal suite. The neighbouring Lugogo Sun has 202 rooms and the Ezulwini Sun has 80 rooms and 20 cabana-style apartments. www.suninternational.com Currency The local currency is the Lilangeni and is on par with the South African Rand and both currencies are legal tender in Swaziland. Language English and SiSwati are the official languages. Most Swazis speak English. What’s on? The success of this weeklong tournament has prompted organisers to plan an expanded event for 2015. The tournament is hosted by Gold Coastbased Go Golfing and the week-long event was modelled on the successful ‘Masters’ tournaments they have hosted on the Gold Coast and in Tasmania for nearly 20 years. always of a similar age and handicap, with the added bonus of playing alongside golfers from all over the world. Hua Hin, a comfortable 3 hour drive south of Bangkok, was voted ‘Best Golf Destination - Asia Pacific’ at the annual IAGTO golf tourism awards announced in Spain last November. Joey Frank from Coffs Harbour, a first time traveller to Hua Hin to play in the Centara Masters, is adamant Hua Hin should win the title every year.

“This place is just sensational. Everyone is smiling and just so helpful. It’s a beautiful beachside town with vibrant markets, restaurants, bars and nightlife. At $15 for a two-hour massage and just $20 for dinner including drinks, it’s also unbeatable value.” A very happy Cliff Almond from Carbrook rated the event his best-ever golfing experience.

“Black Mountain and Banyan would have to be the best courses I have played anywhere and Majestic Creek and Imperial Lake View were also a great challenge. We all received caddie bibs printed with our names and country flag, which our caddies wore each day. Playing with caddies is always a treat, but these caddies knew their stuff and were great fun. I know that when my caddie says 50/50 it means my ball is probably lost.” At its peak, Go Golfing’s World Masters tournament on the Gold Coast attracted more than 1,000 golfers and tournament director Peter McCarthy is convinced the Centara World Masters will rival those numbers in a couple of years. “We are so delighted with the success of the event, and based on the overwhelming positive feedback from participants, we are planning for 700 plus players next year.”

“I have hosted tournaments all over the world for nearly 20 years and never have I been so overwhelmed by the hospitality we received in Hua Hin. One of the host courses, Imperial Lake View, knowing that they only had 15 female lockers, made available 20 adjoining hotel rooms for the ladies to store their valuables, shower and change after golf. On the Tuesday at Black Mountain we had rain just before the end of play and all clubs were put in a drying room overnight with industrial fans. The service at the hotels, courses and everywhere was just so helpful that we can’t wait to return in 2015.” Ross and Barbara Hopkins, of Caloundra on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast were typical of many participants who said the tournament exceeded all expectations. “It was a great experience and very professionally organised from start to finish,” Barbara said at the conclusion

‘The land of smiles’ of the event. “We met some wonderful people, played some great courses and had a week to remember.”

Fellow Queenslander, Denis O’Brien, was impressed with the quality of the courses. “They were all of a very high standard,” he said. “The locker rooms at the courses are fitted out better than 5-star hotels and the whole service just blew my mind.” Many participants extended their stay in Thailand to shop in Bangkok and enjoy the resort towns of Phuket, Pattaya and Chang Mai. The headline sponsor, Centara Hotels and Resorts, was backed by TaylorMadeadidas Golf, Chang Beer, Coca-Cola, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the City of Hua Hin and D’ablo Sportswear. A gala prize giving party at the Centara Grand Hotel saw the main lucky draw prize go to Sujurd Tsao of Taiwan, who

won a return trip to the TaylorMade World Masters on the Gold Coast in October. Runner-up, Nat Anderson of Western Australia, won a trip to next year’s Centara World Masters which will run 14 to 20 June 2015.
