INSIDE GOLF TRAVEL | May 2014

QUEENSLAND Noosa Springs Golf & Spa Resort Tourists flock to Noosa for its famous beaches, pristine National Park, cosmopolitan cafes, trendy bars, swanky restaurants and high end boutiques, but what lures them to Noosa Springs is the prospect of championship golf alongside spring fed lakes in a bushland setting; indulgent day spa treatments; fine dining; superior accommodation and even gentle activities such as nature walks, swimming and yoga – to mention but few of the resort’s recreational offerings. Driving along the heavily tree-lined boulevard to the resort’s impressive porte cochere entrance you will feel a million miles away from the everyday yet you’re only 3km drive to Noosa’s bustling Hastings Street and Main Beach. A world of casual elegance awaits you at the international championship golf course and European-style day spa resort. Designed by leading golf course architect Graham Papworth, the par-72, 6,180m championship course was built to international standards with nine lakes and 69 bunkers guarding manicured fairways. Hole five is Noosa Springs’ signature hole, which is loved by many for its beauty, challenge and variety.

Noosa Springs Golf & Spa Resort It’s a shortish par-four, but definitely not for the faint hearted. It offers different options on how to approach it for all handicappers. The biggest hitters could drive across the lake to the green, while for the more modest ball strikers, positioning is crucial to negotiate the almost 90-degree dogleg. For golfers keen to perfect their game after dark, they can take advantage of Noosa’s only floodlit driving range open until 9pm Wednesday to Saturday.

While you’re there don’t forget to visit the superb golf boutique which stocks the very latest in golf and leisure wear from top labels such as Calvin Klein, Daily Sports, EP Pro, Adidas, Nike, Puma and Nuni. Noosa Springs prides itself as a promoter of golfing excellence with many events, golf and tennis clinics and schools hosted throughout the year. Or you can simply make Noosa Springs your home while you enjoy some of the many other major events scheduled for Noosa during the year – The Festival of Surfing, the Food

and Wine Festival, Jazz Festival and the iconic Noosa triathlon to name just a few. Noosa Springs is the ideal getaway for families or couples where the only sounds you will awake to are the sounds of nature. CITY GOLF CLUB City Golf Club is on the outskirts of the Toowoomba CBD, but this course has an expansive and endless amount of rolling greens. Winner of the Best Golf Club in Queensland two years running, this 18hole course is sure to surprise and delight all who play there. Boasting lush kikuyu fairways and carpetlike bent grass greens, the City Golf Club’s incredible golf course has been the perfect host to the Queensland PGA Championship for the last five years. A professional golfer’s dream, City Golf Club has made a name for itself as one of the best Golf Courses in Australia.

Right up to its challenging 18th finishing hole, boasting sweeping city views, it is the variety and changes in elevation that make the layout of the course so appealing. From golf enthusiasts to professionals, the City Golf Club has something to offer everyone, even the non-golfers. Attached to the lush golfing greens is the 2014 Winner of Best Club in the Darling Downs, with a wide selection of restaurants and cafes, gaming facilities and entertainment. City Golf Motel sits on the edge of the 40 hectare golfing grounds as well, offering stunning views and luxurious accommodation. With a

The picturesque Toowoomba Golf Club at Middle Ridge is a golfer’s dream and not only is it the second oldest golf club in Queensland, it is also one of Queensland’s and Australia’s premier inland golf courses. Australia’s own former world number one, Greg Norman also has played Toowoomba Golf Club on many occasions during his early career and stated that “the course was a testing and formidable challenge for golfers of all levels”. In fact, it has been widely stated that “Middle Ridge” is one of the finest inland courses in Australia. Other notable players that have played the challenging Middle Ridge layout include Gary Player, Norman Von Nida, Joe Kirkwood, Walter Hagan, Bobby Locke, Bruce Crampton and “Babe” Didrichson.

Rolling tree-lined kikuyu fairways and superbly manicured Penncross Bent greens provide the ultimate in course presentation and the well-appointed clubhouse features a deck overlooking the magnificent course and offers a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. After a round of golf you will be able to watch the sun set over the 18th green while enjoying a cold beverage. On-site parking allows easy access to the clubhouse and the course.

A club steeped in history such as Toowoomba Golf Club also brings with it a legacy to the game of golf itself. Pioneers of the game created and nurtured some of the states great interclub challenges involving amongst other things the formation of reciprocity between 35 clubs throughout Queensland alone. Under the stewardship of General Manager Robyn Bautovich, Peppers Craigieburn’s high-quality standards of hospitality, food and wine have been enhanced in several directions in the past two and half years and the heritage links of its almost 100 years-old golf course have been fostered.

NEW SOUTH WALES & ACT Peppers Craigieburn THE idea of a weekend golf-venue getaway to even the most attractive regions about an hour’s drive from Sydney often are viewed by female nongolfer partners as being “a bit boring” no-go outings. Most golf resorts offer little in the way of top-class cafes, fine dining and nearby interesting shopping for upmarket clothes, antiques and knick-knacks. And sometimes the rigours of an alltoo challenging costly “championship” golf resort course (both golfwise and physically) is not the relaxing answer for the keen golfer or those just out to tone up their game with social play.

Since 2010 Peppers Craigieburn has hosted the popular Australian Golf Heritage Society’s Craigieburn Cup in which golfers play using 100-year-old wooden hickory-shafted clubs wearing turn-of-the-century golf fashions. To showcase and build on the growing interest of hickory golf, Bautovich fortunately has a key golf heritage ally in Alex Nicholson, a former champion amateur who played at a national level around scratch and in pennant teams at Royal Queensland and The Australian golf clubs.

Peppers Craigieburn

Often the golfer returns home with a bruised ego (and credit-card) and the non-golfer unimpressed with what was the limited entertainment and distractions of the golf clubhouse-spa resort environment. Fortunately just over an hour’s drive south of Sydney in the serene Southern Highlands there is a perfect compromise at Peppers Craigieburn, the friendly gracious hotel in the stylish Southern Highlands town of Bowral. For the golfers, here there is the chance to play for just $15 per person or if staying in the Hotel it is $15 for the day enjoying endless uncrowded relaxing rounds or simply just practising on an immaculately

manicured private nine-hole (14 tee) par66 course. Meanwhile the non-golfers can choose between relaxing in style on Craigieburn’s sunny verandas or in front of cosy fires in lounges enjoying Afternoon High-teas or visiting the myriad of cafes and classy shops just minutes away in Bowral’s CBD. For over 100 years the picturesque fourstar Craigieburn has provided the perfect escape for couples of all ages, especially those who dabble at golf while enjoying the comforts of a traditionally grand, but comfortably modern hotel. Over the past few years Craigieburn’s renowned fashionable standing has been stylishly updated and enhanced,

In Nicholson -- at 85 still a top golfer who regularly beats his age and voluntarily coaches senior and junior beginners – Peppers Craigieburn has an expert golf adviser. Nicholson is an accredited Golf Australia coach and three years ago, in co-operation with Craigieburn, started an Introduction to Golf program with students from the retirees University of the Third Age and since has brought more than 100 people out onto the course. And Peppers Craigieburn truly has a grass-roots golf and turf expert in Simon Lawrance, who not only is the course’s curator, but the reigning Craigieburn Cup hickory champion, shooting a five over par 71 to win in 2013. Lawrance, who learned his trade at the

Moss Vale (Dormie House) Moss Vale golf course is regarded as one of the prettiest and challenging courses in country NSW and while you are only 90 minutes’ drive from the Sydney CBD, you will feel like you’re a world away in the

Yowani Country Club relaxed and peaceful Southern Highlands. The 18-Hole Championship Golf Course is a par-71, 5805m (Mens tees), and Par -73, 5300m (women’s tees). A number of twists and turns, creek crossings and deceptive greens, make the course a true test. The creek which runs through the course has to be crossed 12 times during the round. From the clubhouse, the Moss Vale layout appears hilly, but after the opening 5 holes, it levels out and heads into the quiet countryside. Moss Vale Golf Club was founded in 1902 and designed in its current location and layout by Carnegie Clark. The current course record is 66. The environment is also the perfect location to work on all aspects of your golf game at the club’s two-day golf school, run by AAA-rated Australian PGA

VICTORIA Marysville Community Golf and Bowls Club For seventy eight years an integral part of the township of Marysville has been the golf course and when reading the history of the course in club member Liz Amos’s book ‘Marysville Community Golf and Bowls Club Inc. Before and after Black Saturday February 2009, it becomes obvious that the club has been very dependent on the hard work of community members for the development and the ongoing up-keep of the 18 hole course. With an abundance of nearby attractions including world class wineries, superb restaurants, Hot Springs and spectacular coastline, the Mornington Peninsula is a perfect destination not just for keen golfers, but romantic getaways, family retreats or a weekend away with friends.

Nestled in a fertile valley of the Great Dividing Range this is one of Victoria’s most picturesque courses. Set in a natural amphitheatre it is surrounded by mountains and the course has been designed to embrace the countryside and the Steavenson River which meanders through it. Whilst the course has recovered very well from the fire damage the number of green fee players has diminished partly because until now accommodation in the town has been limited. There are now a number of accommodation options available in the town and Triangle area ranging from caravan parks, selfcontained accommodation, B&B’s, motels and the new Vibe Hotel and Conference Centre which will be opening in late

2014. Stay & Play packages are also available through the golf club. In fact, the Marysville community would love to show visitors how far they have come in their recovery and what a beautiful part of the world it is! The clubhouse has been refurbished with the generous donation of funds from the Victorian Government and also significant benefactors. It offers new clubrooms, a bistro/function room with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the magnificent course, a spectacular outdoor deck area, a bar, and a golf shop/kiosk. Carts are available for hire as are clubs and pull buggies. The course is situated in Marysville about one hour’s drive from Lilydale in the Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne and close to Healesville, Alexandra and Yea. The newly laid carpet bowling green is adjacent to the golf course and bowls are available for hire seven days a week.

St Andrews Beach St Andrews Beach Golf Course on the Mornington Peninsula is quickly becoming one of Australia’s most talked about courses, and the release of new on-site accommodation is certain to be popular with travelling golfers. St Andrews Beach Apartments offer modern, two-bedroom villas fully furnished with contemporary fittings with guests even able to enjoy exclusive access to their own private short game facility. The open plan design flows out to a spacious decking area complete with outdoor furniture and hooded barbeque ideal for golf getaways. Each bedroom

Barwon Heads Golf Club Nestled amongst the coastal dunes, and metres from the spectacular 13th Beach on Victoria’s renowned Surf Coast, the highly ranked Barwon Heads links course has been providing an enjoyable challenge for all golfers since the early 1900’s. Now, after significant improvements to the course, facilities and clubhouse, this club is a ‘must golf’ destination. Since its creation over a century ago, the Barwon Heads Golf Club has been considered among the finest in the country. The course planning over this time has resisted change for the sake of change. Rather, it has sought to preserve the brilliant natural contours of the landscape that shape the holes amid the sand dunes. This is one of the most alluring features of the course. Relatively new to the course is a top class short game practice facility. It features various angles of greens, aprons and bunkers, replicating the natural contours found on the course. It’s the perfect place to warm up, practice or take a short game lesson. Bordering the practice facility is the redeveloped Par-3 course and resurfaced tennis courts. The clubhouse has also seen significant improvement. Visitors to Barwon Heads will be familiar with the Barwon Heads Golf Club and its

Barwon Heads Golf Club

iconic clubhouse. Many, however, will be unaware of the accommodation provided within. In fact, the golf club has provided accommodation since the clubhouse was opened in 1924. Back then it was described as Australia’s first country club on the nation’s first links course and the prestigious, membersonly clubhouse opened to a great deal of fanfare. This was despite the fact the original twenty bedrooms shared two bathrooms and only four showers. However, as a result of renovations and improvements made over the years, the Heritage Victoria listed clubhouse now has 19 rooms, all with their own ensuite.

The perfect golfing destination Famous Championship golf course, 36 brand new accommodation suites and choice of two restaurants including the new “Bungool” fine dining experience. Plus, opening soon, brand new “Bungool” championship golf course.

After a recent refurbishment all rooms are modern with elegant furnishings. It is not only members who will benefit from the refurbishment. Non-members who are green-fee paying individuals, couples or groups can stay in the newly refurbished rooms on a bed-andbreakfast or full board ‘stay-and-play’ package. The packages are particularly popular with small groups who return to play golf year after year. These golfers comment on the level of accomplished service they receive in the clubhouse and the ambience of the surrounds. The magnificent clubhouse is famed for its old-world charm. With stunning

architecture and captivating views, it is a clubhouse designed for all seasons. House guests can enjoy the expansive balconies in summer or warm themselves after a Scottish links-like experience before the luxurious open fires during the cooler months. The club extends a warm welcome to golfers to stay in the house and experience all that the wonderful club has to offer, including over 100 years of golfing history. For more information visit www.bhgc.com.au, or phone (03) 5255 6255.

Come & play at the beautiful Marysville Golf & Bowls Club. Surrounded by magnificent forested hills with the Steavenson River meandering through the course, it is a delight to play all year round. Newly refurbished clubhouse with bistro & a fantastic outdoor deck area taking in the spectacular views over the course & beyond. Stay & play packages are available & there is plenty of accommodation in Marysville. The locals are keen to welcome visitors both old & new, to see how far we’ve come in our recovery since Black Saturday.

INSIDE GOLF TRAVEL | May 2014

WESTERN AUSTRALIA Kalgoorlie Golf Course Kalgoorlie Golf Course is an absolute gem, and may very well be one of the most “Australian” courses you will ever play. Designed by Graham Marsh, and owned by the city of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, this 18-hole par-72 championship course features an extremely playable layout, set in one of the most magnificent settings in the country. With six different tee boxes, Kalgoorlie is playable for any–and I mean ANY–skill level. Played from the black tees, the course measures a staggering 6768m, making it one of the longest courses in Australia. The “public” tees are a more manageable 5933m, while other tees are available for members, ladies and even juniors. Most of the holes are quite straight and wide, meaning that you’ll be relatively safe to hit driver throughout the day. But that doesn’t mean the holes are easy; on the contrary, they are anything but. A few of the doglegs – notably the par-4 12th – will require careful club selection and course management if you want any hope of par. The same can be said for holes like the par-5 9th, which features a massive (yet narrow), three-tiered green that slopes from front to back (i.e. AWAY

Kalgoorlie Golf Course from you), and is guarded by a deep pot bunker on the front-right. If the pin is cut on the first/front tier, prepare for an automatic 3-putt. The par-3s at Kalgoorlie are glorious, especially the 218m 8th. With a slightly raised green, strategic bunkers and plenty of danger on each side, it’s the type of hole that can destroy a scorecard. Especially if the wind is in your face. Same with the 202m 17th, which features its

own selection of nightmarish bunkers. The par-5s are equally strong. All four of them are solid three-shotters, including the monstrous 15th. Nicknamed the “Golden Mile”, this 569m beauty features a blind second shot, a massive ravine along the right, bunkers at every turn and a very treacherous green. A par here feels like a birdie. Of course, the main feature of Kalgoorlie

GC is the red earth surrounding the course. It not only “frames” the course in a stunning visual display, but it also provides a notorious hazard for wayward shots. Playing off the red earth is akin to a soft clay, and requires plenty of practice to master (I had plenty of practice during the round!). The same can be said for the various orange-coloured “waste bunkers” throughout the course: pretty, but deadly. The sparse surrounds beyond the rough

Joondalup Resort You’ve likely heard of Joondalup, as it regularly features near the top of many of the regular golf course rankings. In truth, this is one spectacular facility, and is less than 30 minutes’ drive from Perth. With three 9-hole layouts – The Dune, The Quarry and The Lake – Joondalup offers something for golfers of all levels. The Quarry 9 is the most spectacular of the layouts, as it wends its way around steep limestone quarries and deep, menacing valleys. It is certainly the star of the facility – and a definite must-play layout.

Joondalup Resort means you’ll likely find your wayward shots. But it’s a hollow victory, as the numerous prickly desert shrubs and bushes provide their own layer of peril; it is nigh impossible to play out of many of them. Also, much of the course is slightly “raised” off the ground – so if your ball rolls just off the fairway onto the red earth, you can find yourself wedged against a raised grass “lip”, which requires a tricky wedge shot to get back onto the fairway.

With a course of this calibre on offer, Kalgoorlie is a fantastic destination for a quick golfing holiday, corporate event or even an annual Social Golf Weekend, as it offers world-class golf, comfortable accommodation, and a unique “frontier town” nightlife scene. After golf, enjoy a tasty dinner or grab a few beers and mingle with the locals at one of the historic pubs, or kick back in your room at one of the many local hotels and dream about the

next day’s round at Kalgoorlie GC. All in all, Kalgoorlie Golf Course is an amazing facility with a setting that is second to none. We are confident that this course will one day find itself listed among Australia’s top rated courses. More information: www.kalgoorliegolfcourse.com, golf@kalgoorliegolfcourse.com, (08) 9026 2626

It’s hard to name just one standout hole at Joondalup - as there are many breathtaking (and jaw-dropping) choices. But you simply can’t go past the Quarry’s 3rd and 4th holes. Though only 136m from the back tees, the Quarry 3rd is one of the more intimidating holes in Australia, as hitting the green requires a forced carry over a “valley of death” in the front and right. If you do miss the green right, there is a steep path down to the bunker below (though this is not a recommended approach option!) After navigating this tricky par-3, you then must tackle the challenging par-5 4th, a double dog-leg uphill monster which wends its way around a large limestone cliff that protects an elevated green. A par on this hole almost feels like an eagle. From tee to green, Joondalup is one of

You will also experience a unique and magical stop in Venice, where you can enjoy your pre-game espresso in Circolo golf Venezia’s original 1820’s clubhouse and tee off on the surrounding 17th century ramparts. Venice has been awarded the 2013 Undiscovered Golf Destination of the Year by the IAGTO. things to remember

when planning your Annual Mates’ Golf Weekend

By Matthew Pitt

T

he planning you put into your golf trip can make all the difference to how much fun your golfers have. It is important to look at all the elements you can control and plan accordingly to give your trip the best chance of success. The important factors to consider are who, where, what, when, how and why and then go from there. 1. Your Golfers - this may seem obvious, but it is critical to consider what type of golfers you are catering for, what they want from the trip and then make your plans accordingly. Every golfer has their own idea of what is fun. Golf purists will want to walk 36 holes a day on classical links courses, while mates on a leisure weekend may prefer 18 holes on a deluxe resort course in a cart with plenty of refreshments handy. 2. The venue - Pick the right venue to suit your golfers’ needs. Consider the location, quality and style of the golf courses, location of accommodation, the size of the cart fleet, the quality of service and what other dining and entertainment options are near the courses. How far your golfers have to travel to reach the venue and at what cost can be a key element in the value proposition. 3. The Timing - You need to avoid Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Easter can 26

INSIDE GOLF TRAVEL | May 2014

be tricky and some public and school holiday times can be an issue. There are also local weather patterns–many Victorians enjoy a winter trip to the Gold Coast and Tasmania is calm in April, May & June but then gets plenty of rain in the Spring. Do a little research on the local weather before your plan the dates for your trip. 4. The Budget - how much time and money do your golfers have to spend? A CEO who is time poor and cashed up may want a private jet for one round with three pals on an exclusive course, while folks with more time and less coin may prefer two weeks touring country courses with a big group staying in budget accommodation. Consider also what you include in the ticket price - golf, carts, accommodation, travel, catering, prizes, gifts, drinks, transfers, etc. The inclusions you opt for have a big impact on the total ticket price and the perceived value. 5. The Accommodation - most golfers prefer to be on the course, or very close by. The other factors to consider are quality, price, availability, layout and proximity to other facilities and services. One of the best venues we have used is a lodge the sleeps 20 with common dining, sitting and living rooms. The community areas made for a very social environment between rounds and a great golf event.

6. Course Condition - Nothing is more disappointing than being excited about playing a course and arriving to find the greens have just been cored and sanded. In your planning, inquire with courses about their maintenance schedules and course works to check if this will impact on your trip. 7. The Competition - Are you even having one? Some trips are simply for the love of golf and there is no competition. Some mates enjoy a lot of side-betting on every round and some groups have an organised competition for the event. Consider your golfers when planning a competition–what do they want, what can they do, do they have handicaps and what will deliver the most fun for the most people? Your options include singles, pairs, teams of four, stroke, par, stableford, ambrose or a mixture of different formats. 8. Prizes & Trophies - If you do have an event, you may require prizes and trophies. Don’t forget to include these in your budget. You will also need a name for your event–preferably with some relevant history among your golfers and a good back-story. Perhaps the most important thing is a great Perpetual Trophy–this can add an extra dimension of excitement and prestige to your event if there is a glittering prize of intrinsic value. The event becomes a quest and this adds anticipation, excitement and glory to any

golfing adventure. 9. The Numbers - How many people are going on your trip? Whether it is 8 or 28 or more has a major bearing on all the other plans. What accommodation is available for a group of your size? How long will your field take to play? Do you use onetee, two-tee or shotgun starts? How many are you catering for? What are the group discount rates at the golf courses? The more players there are, the more complex a competition will be to run. When planning your event, start with how many golfers you plan to take. 10. The Deposit - This cuts both ways: most courses will want a deposit to sure up your commitment and you should thus require a deposit from your golfers. Some golfers say ‘yes’ to everything but they are not committed until they have to reach for their purse. Every event we have ever run, someone has pulled out. To help with your planning, ask your golfers for a deposit. This will weed out who is half-baked and help you finance the deposit your venues will require. • Matthew Pitt is the founder of Bushranger Golf and Social Golf Australia, which run events around Australia. O

ne of Inside Golf’s favourite “quick getaway” locations is the marvelous and tranquil Yering Gorge Cottages, just 45 minutes from the Melbourne CBD. Owned and managed by The Eastern Golf Club, these luxury, self-contained, private spa cottages are located on a private nature reserve on the banks of the Yarra River, and are adjacent to a Greg Normandesigned golf course currently under construction, which will be the future home of The Eastern in early 2015. During a recent stay, we found the cottages to be extremely comfortable and relaxing, and contained everything you need for a weekend away or short escape. There are eight free-standing onebedroom cottages (perfect for couples), two free-standing two-bedroom cottages (ideal for families), and two adjoining two-bedroom cottages which can be booked separately or together to create a

tick all the boxes four-bedroom complex. They feature full kitchens, modern bathrooms with Spa baths, AC/Heating, gas barbecue, outdoor decks, broadband internet and all the modern conveniences. Of course, the standout of any stay at Yering Gorge Cottages is walking along the tranquil banks of the Yarra, enjoying the company of the resident wombats,

rosellas, rabbits and kangaroos. And if you’re lucky, you’ll even spot one of the two rare white kangaroos that calls the reserve home. All in all, Yering Gorge Cottages ticks all the boxes for a relaxing getaway, or a home-base for a trip to the Yarra Valley, which is fast becoming a popular destination for both wine and golf

enthusiasts. Highly recommended! For more information, visit www.yeringcottages.com.au, or phone (03) 9739 0110.

Planning for the

perfect holiday While you never plan for medical emergencies to strike on your holiday, you can plan for this risk by getting travel insurance coverage.

T

hey say planning for a holiday, with all its glorious anticipation of the trip to come, can contribute to your well-being as much as the holiday itself. This well-trodden track includes dreaming about potential itineraries, consulting guidebooks and travel agents, selecting the sites you want to see and finding the accommodation that seem just right for you. There are transport options to consider, tours you might want to take in, the opportunity to get the best value for your budget and the chance to schedule a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Will you be gazing at the ancient Pyramids of Giza, going on a gondolier in Venice or goggling at the Great Wall of China? Will you be dining on Singapore chilli crab, on safari seeing the Big Four in Africa or flying over the expanse of the Grand Canyon by helicopter? The one thing you may not be planning for, though, is probably the most important thing you can plan for: travel hassles. Travel hassles come in many shapes and forms and they can present a serious risk to your enjoyment of your dream holiday. We are talking about flight delays, theft of personal belongings, lost luggage and even the more serious overseas medical emergency. There is one sure fire way to plan for these things and get your contingencies in place. It simply involves purchasing a robust travel insurance policy before you leave. Sage advice from smartraveller.gov.au The Australian Government offers travel advice and information including a 28

INSIDE GOLF TRAVEL | May 2014

helpful section about insurance: “If you incur medical expenses while overseas and you don’t have travel insurance, you are personally liable for covering these costs. The Government cannot pay for medical expenses overseas. Nor will your domestic private health insurance.” The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade offers a very clear view on getting covered: “Travel insurance is as essential as your passport, regardless of your travel destination. If you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel!” Here are four handy travel insurance tips 1. Make sure your personal belongings are covered If you have invested in an expensive camera for your trip or are taking jewellery for that special occasion, chances are you will be stepping out with thousands of dollars’ worth of valuables. When it comes to high value electronics or precious items, most policies have limits. Check you are covered and if not, speak with your insurer about extra cover for your specific items. 2. Have proof of ownership documented before you go For recently purchased laptops, phones or other expensive equipment, make sure you have receipts filed somewhere safe. For heirloom jewellery or gifts, you may not be able to find proof of ownership documentation so easily although such proof will become vital in activating the insurance coverage in the event of a claim. So take photos of your covered

possessions before you go and get valuations for any precious metals or gems. 3. Understand the medical coverage included in your policy The moment you fly away from Australian shores, the safety net you enjoy via Medicare or a private health insurance policy is removed. In places such as the United States, medical care is very expensive. Even a short stay in hospital could lead to financial hardship if coverage wasn’t available. Patients may also be refused care if they are unable to demonstrate an ability to pay. Insurance policies commonly feature different limits of cover depending on the region you are travelling to, so make sure your medical coverage is right for your trip. 4. Consider your pre-existing conditions and check coverage with your insurer Most insurers will exclude pre-existing medical conditions. However coverage for these can sometimes be discussed and arranged. It is important to

be aware that failing to declare any preexisting medical conditions you may have could void the insurance coverage you were entitled to. For further information or to purchase your travel insurance, visit Australian Seniors Insurance Agency: www.seniors.com.au or call 13 76 76.

New Norman course in

Vietnam

O

ne of the most anticipated new golf courses in Asia called its first golfers to the tee on March 14, when The Bluffs Ho Tram Strip opened for preview play along Vietnam’s south-central coast. Designed by legendary golfer Greg Norman, who spent an astounding 331 consecutive weeks atop the world golf rankings, The Bluffs Ho Tram Strip trades on

geographical traits that course architects dream of. “This is one of only two pieces of land of this quality and character that I have ever been given to work with, the other being Doonbeg in the south of Ireland,” said Norman, who also conceived the award-winning Dunes Course at Danang Golf Club, on Vietnam’s central coast. Routed over and around towering seaside sand dunes

less than two hours southeast of Ho Chi Minh City, The Bluffs Ho Tram Strip is one of the few championshipcaliber links courses with significant elevation changes, making for a golf experience that’s as much a feast for the eyes as it is a challenge to tame. While the highest point of the rugged, windswept property is 50 meters above sea level, on the 15th green, one of the most spectacular spots comes earlier in the round, on the 4th hole. From there, players are presented with a 360-degree view of the course, of the surrounding national forest that’s a haven for wildlife, of the expansive shoreline and of The Grand Ho Tram Strip, which opened in July 2013 as Vietnam’s first international luxury casino resort. During the preview phase, golfers are invited to play the course for US $100, about half of what the greens fee is likely to be after the grand opening later this year. “This course has all the elements necessary to be ranked among the best in the world,” said Ben Styles, General Manager of The Bluffs Ho Tram Strip. “It’s golf in its purest, most traditional links form, in a setting that has no rival.” When finished, The Bluffs Ho Tram Strip will include an elegant, 2,300-square-meter clubhouse housing an array of dining outlets and a PGA-staffed driving range with more than 3,000 square meters worth of practice and training facilities. The Bluffs Ho Tram Strip is among several components of The Grand Ho Tram Strip’s first stage of development. The ambitious project already features a 541-room upscale hotel, over 10 restaurants and bars, a spa, nightclub, convention center and casino with 90 gaming tables and over 600 slot machines. To learn more about The Bluffs Ho Tram Strip, visit www.thebluffshotram.com. To make a booking, email bookings@thebluffshotram.com. •

My apologies to the golfers at

Kauri Cliffs – it was only me! By Peter McCarthy

T

he term ‘luxury’ is often overused in descriptors for tourism product and holiday experiences, however my holiday aboard Island Escape Cruises in New Zealand’s Bay of Islands was nothing short of luxurious. In fact, ‘decadent’ is a more apt way to describe my four-day cruise and heli golf experience. Arriving in Auckland we took a 45-minute flight to Keri Keri, the gateway to New Zealand’s Bay of Islands. From there it was 20 minutes by helicopter before landing on the heli pad of our 42 metre twin hull catamaran. Now that gives a whole new take on airport transfers. Stepping onboard I was taken aback with the spacious design. Designed for just 24 passengers, the aft deck is big enough for a party of 50. This became the social hub for the cruise and from where passengers enjoyed fishing, launched canoes and sunset cocktails. In fairness, there were more beers than cocktails as golfers recanted the great shots and the luckless moments from the day’s play. You know, 30

INSIDE GOLF TRAVEL | May 2014

the standard post-round banter. There are 12 generously sized staterooms and suites onboard, complete with ensuites, tasteful decorations and a showcase of New Zealand art. And better still, a comfy king size bed. Walking around the ship you can see no expense has been spared. There’s enormous interior dining and a saloon. Nowhere on board did I feel cramped. Before dinner we met the crew. I was surprised and comforted to see there were more crew than guests and this led to a service experience I have not encountered before. Whether it be the captain explaining instruments on the bridge, a deckhand baiting your hook or providing another chilled beer, they were generous with their time and exceptional with their service. The French trained chefs on board served up gastronomic creations for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Now I have to confess that it wasn’t the ship that captivated my attention for this holiday. The chance to play the famed Kauri Cliffs course, not once but twice, with heli transfers to boot raised my excitement. Playing most of my golf

on Gold Coast resort courses, it is not uncommon for guests to occasionally arrive for their round by helicopter. I have been guilty of pausing my round and waiting expectantly for an A list celebrity, media mogul or international dignitary to emerge. I must apologise to the golfers at Kauri Cliffs, it was only me. Rating highly in the world’s top 100 courses, Kauri Cliffs is a challenging 6,510 metres of golfing inspiration. Fifteen holes view the Pacific Ocean, six of which are played alongside seaside cliffs. The beautiful inland holes wind through marsh, forest and farmland. A 12 handicapper, I played the testing par 3’s in one under par, no small feat given 4 iron was the shortest club I hit. The 7-day cruise also features rounds at

Gulf Harbour, favourably compared to the famed Pebble Beach. Carrington Club and Titirangi, home to many international tournaments including the New Zealand Open, complete the golfing indulgence. And yes, you transfer by helicopter to and from golf all week. A decadently luxurious golfing holiday. Go Golfing is delighted to offer one of the world’s most exhilarating golf experiences - an unforgettable Helicopter Golf Cruise starting in Auckland and continuing around the stunning Bay of Islands in New Zealand with luxury small ship sailing specialists Island Escapes Cruises. Departures scheduled for 1st and 8th February 2015. From NZ$7,550 per person twin share. www.gogolfing.net.au, info@gogolfing.net.au •
