MAGIC ON THE MURRAY:

Mildura Golf Resort

A

t the top-end of the Murray River in northwestern Victoria, Mildura Golf Resort features comfortable accommodation, delicious meals and exciting golf for players of all levels. The traveling golfer will find a course that is superbly maintained all year round. Acclaimed for its immaculate greens and challenging championship layout the 5971m course is rated as one of the Murray River’s most challenging and enjoyable golf rounds. Mildura’s well-contoured fairways feature many undulations while the spectacular water hazards and true greens at Mildura Golf Resort are always well presented. The course was opened for play in 1912,

and was later remodelled in 1975. In November 2011, the resort commenced the latest phase of course remodelling by PGA Tour Player and course architect, Bob Shearer and his business partner, Ben Davey of Davey Shearer Design Group. Four new holes of the redesign are now open. Mildura’s new second and third holes were opened in May 2012. The course’s new 15th and 16th holes (replacing the 10th and 11th holes) include Kikuyu fairways and have since been completed. “Membership and numbers of people playing golf are increasing,” says Mildura’s Executive Director Nick Cavallo. “It’s the total combination of clubhouse, golf, redevelopment, which allows things to

stay pretty sustainable,” Cavallo says. Mildura Golf Resort President Greg Buchanan says most of the new holes are more difficult than the originals. “The old course was based on flood irrigations with big, flat greens and the new greens are much more challenging. The bunkers have vastly improved, different shapes, beautiful sand in them. I guess there’s a bit more of a championship feel about it but we’re still aiming to have a golf course that everyone enjoys.” Currently Mildura Golf Resort hosts various tournaments including the Rivertowns Classic, Tri-State Masters, Mildura Golf week, Mallee Regional Pro-am, the 2014 Golf Victoria Country Teams event and the Jayco Mildura Golf Resort Open.

ZPGA Golf Professional, Andrew Whiley, has updated his New Zealand Golf Course Rankings for 2014. Whiley believes this is the most extensive ranking of New Zealand golf courses ever undertaken, with twenty two respondents ranking a variety of factors. The respondents, which include NZPGA Golf Professionals, Tour Professionals, leading Golf Club Professionals, top women golfers and course superintendents, ranked each course from 1-5 across seven criteria: shot values, resistance to scoring, design variety, memorability, aesthetics, conditioning and ambience.

Zealand were: Kinloch (30.2) The Hills (30), Jacks Point (29.87), Cape Kidnappers (29.81) and Kauri Cliffs (29.2) with Wairakei, Royal Wellington, Paraparaumu, Titirangi and Millbrook golf courses rounding out the top ten. New Zealand’s five highest ranked golf courses are extremely well-regarded and the tight rankings show how good the golf courses are, with Kinloch moving into the top spot. All top five golf courses were within a point of each other and #2, #3 and #4 were all within 0.19 of point difference. This reflects the quality of courses which are all relatively new to the New Zealand golf market.

Whiley asked each ranker to rank their Top 12 golf courses from the North Island and Top 12 from the South Island. From these rankings, New Zealand’s “Top 25” rankings were produced. The Top 5 courses in New

golfer should visit with both having two golf courses in the Top 5. A big mover in the South Island rankings was Cromwell Golf Club coming into the Top 12 and New Zealand’s Top 25 while in the North Island, the Manawatu and Wanganui Golf Clubs were once again in the Top 12 courses in the North Island and in New Zealand’s Top 25.

The design work of Royal Wellington has definitely paid off as it is now ranked as the number one “Member” golf course in the country. Taupo and Queenstown are two great golf destinations that every

Tee off internationally with Golf Tours Abroad

G

olf Tours Abroad may sound like a new name in golf travel, but the company and people behind the name already have the runs on the board. Proprietors Mark and Alice Sawyer originally gained their experience working with one of the largest tour companies in China. In 2008, they established LetsdoChina.com and specialised in tailored tours to China and Hong Kong. A strong passion for golf inspired the Sawyers to create a fabulous range of golf and sightseeing holidays to China’s most popular destinations. As the company has evolved, the urge to expand golfing destinations beyond China was growing. With the variety of great golfing locations around the world, a separate brand and business was needed to reflect golf tours and holidays to multiple destinations – hence Golf Tours Abroad was born. Whilst LetsdoChina.com continues with its focus on China, Golf Tours Abroad now operates as a stand-alone brand dedicated to golf-only international

tours. Meticulous planning and a great deal of miles have been travelled to forge important relationships with prominent golf resorts, reputable hotels and local tourism authorities. By nailing down a robust set of key partners in several countries, Golf Tours Abroad has established a quality range of valuepacked golfing getaways. To date, they have developed packages to China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the USA and Vietnam. In addition to the growing list of destinations, they operate escorted tours and promote special event packages to

prestigious golf events and tournaments. Currently the team are promoting a watch and play package to the US$7M 2014 CIMB Classic in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, on behalf of the Malaysian Golf Tourism Association. The PGA tournament concludes on November 2 and the winner gains automatic entry to the 2015 US Masters. In March of 2015, Golf Tours Abroad will be hosting a fully escorted 12-day stay and play package to Vietnam. The must-do tour visits 4 regions of Vietnam including Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An and Saigon (Ho Chi Minh). Vietnam is a great golfing destination

and the tour showcases its best golf courses along with beautiful scenery and fascinating sightseeing activities. Golf Tours Abroad is a family-owned business with a proven track record as a diligent travel provider. You can book with confidence and look forward to an impressive experience in service excellence.

A

s winter arrives in the Northern Hemisphere and golfers everywhere have put their golfing equipment away, there is another group of intrepid golfers who bring their golfing equipment out to play golf in the snow and on frozen lakes and rivers around the world. According to many historians there was a short game of “Kolf” being played in Holland on frozen canals and ponds around the 17th Century.

Snow golf as we know it was created in Fife, Scotland in 1847 by Stuart Mackenzie, the illegitimate older brother of old Tom Morris, who invented the modern game of golf. Rumour has it that Stuart, who was fed up with his younger brother getting all the recognition and acclaim, was alleged to have said “Och, whit kind of big Jessies are ye that ye hay to want to play golf only on the green grass? Can ye no be like me and play in the snow?” Snow golf blossomed in Scotland for three strong years before Stuart was killed in a tragic and supposedly unprovoked penguin attack. Although some bystanders insist the penguin was acting in self defense, the trauma of the attack caused snow golf in Scotland to languish and die out for over a century.

-with Kipling’s good friend, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle--in Brattleboro, Vermont in America. Kipling, who lived a great deal of his life in India where the temperatures could reach 100 degrees Fahrenheit in the shade, reveled in the cooler climate of Vermont. On a cold winter’s day Kipling was seen in a snow-covered paddock hitting something with a white birch branch. This became a familiar sight to the locals until one day he came out dressed in knee-high socks, black boots, green knickers, a red plaid cap and, on his shoulder, a bag of mixed clubs. After making a mound with snow he proceeded to place his red ball on the top, like a tee, thus becoming the start of golf being played in the snow. Today there are many prestigious snow and ice golf tournaments being played all over the world. It has become very popular with both professional and amateur golfers alike, with many famous companies sponsoring these snow golf tournaments. There is the Drambuie Ice Golf Championship, first held in Greenland in 1997 and was the brainchild of Mr Arnie Neiman who asked Mr. Rolf HenningJensen to design an 18-hole golf course on frozen ice, and so began a great golfing experience. In 2012 there was the BMW Winter Snow Golf Cup held in France. This tournament was thanks to an avid golf enthusiast by the name of Philippe Guilham who not only presented this golf tournament, but

Tickets for this year’s Australian PGA Championship have been released for sale following last month’s announcement that Adam Scott will be returning to Queensland’s Gold Coast in December to defend his title.

The 17th century game of “Kolf” may have given rise to the modern game of Snow Golf

also the prestigious Vacheron Constantin Snow Golf Cup held In St Moritz. The famous wine and champagne company of Boerl & Kroff started The Boerl & Kroff Snow Golf Cup in 1979 and is held in beautiful Switzerland. Likewise, famous whisky makers Chivas also hold their very own Chivas International Snow Golf Championships in Switzerland. Not to be outdone, there is the snow golf champion tournament held on The Aletsch Glacier on the Jungfrau Mountain in the Swiss Alps. They tee off at an altitude of 3465 metres and over 40 famous Swiss sporting personalities take part. Then there is the Lake Baikal Ice Golf Tournament held on the largest, deepest, and oldest lake in the world, Lake Baikal in Siberia. While there are these fantastic tournaments there are also many great snow and ice golf tournaments held in countries all over the world, including

Canada, Finland, Sweden, Austria, England, America and Argentina. These are both for fun and also to raise much needed money for charities. Like the Rockwall Police Department in Texas who hold the Santa Snow Flight Golf, where they fly Santa in to play snow golf and all the money raised is spent on toys for underprivileged children at Christmas. In 2010 the Utukkuu Snow Golf Challenge was held in Anchorage, Alaska, which raised over $36,500 for the Aqqaluk Trust, which preserves the culture, language and dignity of the Inupiat people. These are just a small sample of the type of work that is carried out by the kindness of the whole golfing fraternity worldwide. However, so often we never get to hear of the fantastic events and the people who run them. •

Available through Ticketek, ticket prices start at $25.00 with a variety of ticketing options available including season, weekend and day passes. Children 16 years and younger will gain free admission when accompanied by a paying adult, while members of RACV and affiliated motoring clubs will also receive discounted admission. The tale of the

T

he fragility and delicate beauty of the Sakura (cherry blossom) lies in direct contrast to the thunderous stamp of a Sumo wrestler. Perhaps it is deliberate that the cherry blossom does not bloom during Sumo tournaments. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to step inside the life of a Sumo Wrestler, or rikishi? Each wrestler belongs to a stable (or beya), which is managed by a retired wrestler and they join the stable traditionally when they are quite young to commence grooming. Currently there are 54 stables and within the stables live the match referees, ushers and even the hairdressers! Within Sumo wrestling you’ll find that, like boxing, there are various divisions of fighters; starting at the pinnacle of the sport with the makuuchi and juryo, below them are the makushita, sandanme, jonidan and jonokuchi but it is not until the Sumo reach the status of juryo that they begin attracting a salary. Lowerranked rikishi earn as little as $4,200 per year whilst grand champions can earn up to $285,000 per year and are treated

like rock stars. From this time when they reach the upper levels of status, the Sumo are well supported in the beya and have a team that monitor their training and diet. Wrestlers at this level can be differentiated by the colourful apron-like cloth called a keshomawashi that depicts their stable; and the topknot worn on their head is made to reflect the leaf of a ginko tree. Sounds harmless doesn’t it? But having personally been to a wrestling

Bouts are fought in a circular ring made with rice-straw bales on a top of clay platform called a dohyo and can be traced back to the late 1600’s. Wrestlers’

names are selected traditionally by their stable master. From the time they wake at 5am the unranked wrestlers commence their training in the practice ring, some of the training includes a ritual stamping called shiko which is designed to strengthen lower body power. This is achieved by squatting and then lifting one leg out and then alternating.

Can you believe that someone of such bulk can be so flexible? The Sumo work on this flexibility by engaging in the splits and then bending forward till their chest touches the floor. Ouch! This move is called Matawari. You are probably wondering what fuels a man of this immense mass. The wrestlers eat chanko which is prepared by the young members

of the beya and includes stews, Chinese food, sashimi and deed-fried food. Sumos traditionally eat twice daily at 11am and 6pm and of course the higherranked wrestlers eat first and shower first and then there’s plenty of sleeping all in the name of building their considerable size. Younger rikishi are responsible for cleaning the beya including sweeping

and cleaning. These younger Sumo are called Tsukebito or attendants. When you join Go Golfing Travel’s tour to Japan next March, you will have the opportunity witness the power, energy and spectacle of this incredible region. When you join Go Golfing, you won’t be the Tsukebito, you’ll be treated like a Makuuchi wrestler of the highest order.

Kingsbarns to host 2017 Ricoh Women’s British Open

TRAVEL NEWS

Electronic devices cleared for take-off

Kingsbarns Golf Links has been selected to host the Ricoh Women’s British Open in 2017. Located near St Andrews, the highly rated links course has been a part of the men’s European Tour annually for 13 years earning a reputation as one of the most admired venues on the circuit. This will, however, be the first time Kingsbarns will host a Major Championship.

V

irgin Australia customers are now able to use personal hand-held electronic devices from gate to gate, following approval last month from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority. Starting last month, usage of personal electronic devices weighing less than 1kg are now permitted at all stages of flight (from departure gate to arrival gate), provided flight mode is selected. The change applies to all Virgin Australia mainline domestic and short-haul international flights – includes Boeing 737, Embraer 190, and Airbus 330 aircraft. Devices weighing more than 1kg will still be required to be stowed during take-off and landing. Cabin Crew will make announcements on the flights confirming that customers are able to use their devices. Passengers will be asked to pause their in-flight entertainment while the pre-flight safety briefing is underway. Virgin Australia Chief Customer Officer Mark Hassell said the company was

pleased to be introducing the initiative without delay. “Today’s announcement means that our customers will be able to use their personal devices throughout their entire journey with us, maximising their work or leisure time. “On Boeing 737 and the majority of Embraer 190 aircraft, customers will also be able to take advantage of our innovative Australian-first Wi-Fi entertainment system, with more than 300 hours of film, television and music content at their fingertips from the moment they sit down. “We know that a significant proportion of our customers travel with at least one smartphone or tablet, which

demonstrates how valuable gate-togate access is to their overall travel experience”, Mr Hassell said. Virgin Australia worked with the Civil Aviation Safety Authority on an exemption to previous rules which prohibited the use of personal electronic devices other than at cruising altitude. Other aircraft in Virgin Australia’s fleet still require more testing and approvals prior to launching gate-to-gate access for personal hand-held devices. Flights to or from New Zealand, the Cook Islands, Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu and Fiji are excluded as approval is needed from the Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand. Consistently ranked as one of the top golf courses in the world, Kingsbarns has co-hosted the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship for over a decade. During this time the course has won praise from touring pros and celebrities alike who admire the traditional Scottish links design with views of the North Sea from every hole. Kingsbarns Golf Links is located seven miles south east of St Andrews, widely known as the Home of Golf. Golf has been played off and on at Kingsbarns since 1793, with the course opened in its present form in 2000 and has since been recognised as one of the very top golf courses in the world. The Golf Academy China – operated by the same company that runs golf academies in Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, Malaysia and Bali, Indonesia – has begun offering golf schools and specialised teaching at the acclaimed golf resort, which boasts two of the top 100 courses in the world.

Head pro, Jason Hoyles, a European PGA professional, has two Chinese instructors, Toby Zhang and Yang Yong, at a facility described by the academy’s owner, Neil Douglas, as one of the best-equipped training facilities in China. Douglas, a British PGA pro who has been teaching in Asia for the past 15 years and is based at the Golf Academy Borneo in Sabah, says the facilities at Spring City are the best he has seen. “We have the best-equipped golf academy in the best setting and at the best golf course in China,” he says. “Our focus is to encourage players in mainland China, Hong Kong and Singapore – as well as others who wish to improve their game - to come to Spring City to stay, learn and play some great golf.”
