InterContinental Fiji boosts support for Fiji International

T

he InterContinental Hotel Group, one of the world’s leading hotel companies, has put their support behind the inaugural Fiji International golf tournament. Announced last month in Suva, the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa will be recognised as a Gold Sponsor and Official Resort of the Fiji International, which will tee off at Natadola Bay from August 14-17 2014. The luxury beach resort, which neighbours the golf course, provides significant major sponsorship for the new PGA Tour of Australasia and OneAsia tournament; a partnership that will complement InterContinental Fiji’s strategic objective to attract key tourism markets from not only Australia and New Zealand, but also throughout Asia and the United States. With the tournament to be broadcast to over 400 million homes worldwide, Matt Porm, Head of Commercial for the Fiji International for SEL, says the partnership will provide great opportunities for both parties. “The Fiji International will deliver significant benefits to the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa,” said Porm. “As the home of the Fiji International, we look forward to working with InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa to ensure this is a must-visit destination for golf travellers from all around the world.” Porm said that unlike traditional sporting events, the Fiji International is unique in that it offers sponsors yearround benefits, relevant well beyond the

tournament week. “Golf tourism is an emerging market with over 20 per cent growth in the last two years alone, and with further growth forecast for 2014,” he said. “Tapping in to the international golf market is important for Fiji’s wider Tourism strategy and the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa understands the significant potential of this tournament.” The announcement comes as InterContinental Fiji welcomes the arrival of its new General Manager Erik Stuebe who says the resort is looking forward to showcasing its hospitality to players and VIPs, including Vijay Singh. “As the biggest sporting event Fiji has ever seen, the Fiji International will not only bolster Fiji’s existing tourism industry, but shape the nation’s profile as a worldclass golfing destination - locally, an untapped market to date,” said Mr Stuebe. “We proudly support the 2014 Fiji International and ultimately the people of Fiji through the immeasurable benefits it will provide.” Late last year the InterContinental Fiji

Golf Resort & Spa received international recognition at the World Travel Awards in Dubai when it was named as Australasia’s Leading Golf Resort for 2013. In taking out the award, the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa beat highly respectable regional competition including Bonville Golf Resort and Quay West Magenta Shores in Australia, Kauri Cliffs and Millbrook in New Zealand, Moorea Golf Resort in Polynésie Français and The Westin Denarau Island Resort and Spa, also in Fiji. Aside from its contribution to tourism, the Fiji International is expected to inject millions to the local Fijian economy. Supported by the Fiji Government, the inaugural Fiji International will be played from Thursday 14th to Sunday 17th August at Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course. The tournament is being managed by the PGA of Australia in conjunction with Tournament Promoter Sports & Entertainment Limited (SEL). Whether it’s warm winter sunshine, championship golf courses, sandy-white beaches or wilderness walks there’s something for everyone on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, writes DAVID NEWBERY

A

SK most New Zealand golfers their idea of the ideal winter golfing escape and the majority will say, “Queensland’s Sunshine Coast”. After all, it is an opportunity to swap numbingly cold New Zealand for guaranteed warm winter sunshine. Not only do they come for the great and plentiful championship golf, but also the wide variety of activities the destination offers along the lengthy stretch of bonewhile beautiful beaches. Mind you, it’s not just the Kiwis that invade the Sunshine Coast during the winter months: golfers from all Australian states make the trek for similar reasons. Yes, on the Sunshine Coast tourists learn to focus on what is truly important.

play golf pre- or post-lunch. While away the hours on a beach or sit on the balcony overlooking an ocean or golf course and consider the merits of an afternoon glass of wine versus a cold beer versus a lemon squash. A massage may take your fancy. Take your time – there is no pressure to make hurried decisions. The goal here is to relax and enjoy the charm of this wonderful destination just an hour north of Brisbane. Between breakfast and lunch or lunch and dinner, one can swim, play golf, hike Mount Coolum or the Glass House Mountains, visit Australia Zoo or swim with the sharks at Mooloolaba’s Underwater World.

If you’re not into thrill seeking, take a leisurely stroll around the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Eumundi Markets or cycle the shoreline along the Caloundra Coastal Path from Golden Beach to Port Cartwright.

BUILT on natural rolling sand dunes, Bribie Island Golf Club’s championship layout offers golfers of all abilities the opportunity to play a sandbelt-style course while enjoying the sub-tropical weather all year round.

A popular pastime is browsing the chic boutiques along Noosa’s Hastings Street or Mooloolaba’s Esplanade, shopping for crafts in Montville’s charming Main Street or wandering through the creekside shopping centre of Maroochydore’s Sunshine Plaza.

The native bush-land and sandy lies off the fairways accentuate the need to position your golf ball on the well-manicured fairways and greens. Measuring over 6200m, the 18-hole (par 72) layout is one of the must-play courses in Queensland.

At night dance under the stars or enjoy a quiet, romantic meal on one of the many quality restaurants scattered up and down the coast.

It’s played host to many great tournaments including the 2012 Australian Junior Boys’ Championship, the 2012 Queensland Senior Men’s Championship and the 2009 Australian Senior Men’s Championship.

The golf resorts and clubs, too, offer top-quality dining facilities and welcome visitors. So, when you plan your next golf holiday and you decide you want to play courses the equal of any on the eastern seaboard of Australia, make plans to visit the Sunshine Coast. You don’t even need a passport.

Consistently rated in Australia’s top100 public access golf courses and recently rated in Australia’s top-10 most underrated golf courses, Bribie Island will not disappoint. The club’s motto “It’s Worth the Drive” is apt.

Peregian Springs Golf Club A NUMBER of course improvements including the new-look 18th hole at Headland Golf Club will pleasantly surprise golfers.

The club’s general manager Ben Dobson said the hole is now more user-friendly.

55-year-old golf course and the views from the clubhouse are stunning.

“But it’s still a fun hole with challenges,” he said.

New cart paths and dam extensions are just some of the changes, but it’s the 144m, par-3 18th hole that is attracting most attention.

“A bunker awaits, long and left, for those that over-club while the large green has many tricky undulations despite looking relatively flat.

“The layout is undulating and in no way boring,” Dobson said. “Every hole has its own unique challenges and is a bit different. It’s a fun golf course.

In years past, the infamous “Valley of Death” in front of the 18th green destroyed many promising rounds.

It’s also not uncommon for good and bad shots to receive “encouragement” from the club’s verandah.”

Well, members and visitors are now breathing a sigh of relief when they reach the 18th tee for the “Valley of Death” is no more. Truckloads of fill from the dam extensions have “buried” the scorecard destroyer.

Located in the heart of the Sunshine Coast, Headland is the club of choice that provides a challenging golf course whilst delivering highly satisfying golf and hospitality services to its members and visitors. One never gets bored playing the

Headland, Queensland golf club of the year in 2009, is a friendly, welcoming golf club and, according to Dobson, has arguably the best greens on the Sunshine Coast. But back to the views from the comfortable clubhouse, which is open for lunch every day. Long-serving club pro John Victorsen, voted in the top-100 PGA or Australia pros of the last 100 years, reckons the list of places seen from the clubhouse, including the ocean, would fill a travel brochure.

Course superintendent Ben Tilley, too, is an award winner taking out the Queensland Golf Course Superintendents Achievement Award for Excellence in 2011. The club has a lot going for it and the buzz around the 19th hole is infectious. One thing is certain – those golfers who regularly visited “Valley of Death” certainly won’t mourn her passing. I’ll drink to that – from the clubhouse deck, of course, where I can take in the breathtaking views. Headland Golf Club Golf Links Road, Buderim 4556 Tel (07) 5444 5800 www.headlandgolfclub.com.au

IF first impressions are important, it’s little wonder Twin Waters Golf Club is so popular and attracts plenty of repeat business. The club’s website proclaims, “Twin Waters Golf Club is a sportsperson’s dream and one of the top-six resort courses in Australia”. Well, I can’t argue with that. I have played this magnificent Peter Thomson and Mike Wolveridge-designed layout numerous times and I don’t think I have ever had a bad lie. The club’s award-winning general manager Steve Hutchison said the course superintendent and his staff keep the course in perfect condition all year and I can’t argue with that either. It’s one of the reasons the PGA of Australia continue taking the Holden Scramble final back there – year after year.

Mount Coolum Golf Club

Over the years, Tewantin Noosa has hosted its fair share of big events including the Jack Newton Classic. The club has continued this tradition by continuing to host Pro-Am (Legends) events. More than 50,000 rounds are played by the members and a further 15,000 rounds by visitors. Tewantin Noosa Golf Club is popular with locals and visitors alike because it is an easy-walking and forgiving golf course, the par rating for men is 72 and ladies 74 with a slope rating of 126.

The fairways are wide with a first cut then maintained rough so not too many golf balls are lost. Still, the course is no pushover and can challenge golfers of all levels. The true and fast greens are a reasonable size and a good target. Golfers can enjoy the tranquillity of the course’s natural bushland setting where friendly kangaroos roam. There are even koalas and an abundance of birdlife on the golf course. The club offers a fine bistro and relaxing deck to take in the superb view over the

ninth and 18th holes. Secretary manager Allan Harris said the bistro is open seven days a week for lunch and golfers can also enjoy dinner there from Tuesdays to Fridays. The pro shop is one of the biggest and best on the Sunshine Coast and boasts a comprehensive range of equipment, clothing, accessories and hire clubs. In fact, Twin Waters has hosted the Holden Scramble 16 times in the event’s 21-year history. The typical links-style layout replicates some of the traditional and natural British courses so appreciated by five-time Open Championship winner Peter Thomson. Situated at Mudjimba at the mouth of the Maroochy River just south of the Sunshine Coast Airport, Twin Waters has a stunning setting and the challenging layout combine to produce an enjoyable game of golf for all levels of players.

Golfers who spray the ball off the tee need not worry because Twin Waters offers amply wide fairways, punctuated by rolling bumps and dips. Even when you hit your ball over bushcovered hills to the side of the fairway there’s a good chance you’ll find your ball and have a shot to the green. Concentration is critical on the putting surfaces because the greens are large with testing slopes. The 18th is a suitably testing par-5 and it’s a hole where many contests have been won and lost. The eighth hole is just one of the standouts because it has the green design in line with the “road hole” at the famous St Andrews. The water on the right is intimidating and should be avoided at all cost. A unique practice facility is the aquatic driving range, one of only a handful in Queensland. Twin Waters Golf Academy has you covered for improvement. With highly-trained Australian PGA professionals on hand and great facilities on offer golfers will find the academy really is “the new era of golf coaching”. IN common with good golf courses everywhere, Caloundra Golf Club is very much a product of its natural surroundings. There is an aesthetic quality to Caloundra and a self-conscious reverence for nature. Established in 1951 in the popular seaside town of Caloundra, the golf course is set in a tranquil and peaceful environment. Of course, the challenge of the traditional Australian bushland course is another reason why the club is popular with members and visitors alike. The golf course is 5987 metres off the championship tees (5356m for women) and features a number of tight, tree-lined holes that make accuracy and the ability to shape the golf ball off the tee very important. There are five par-3s and they are a real test with none measuring less than 145 metres. Noosa Springs Golf & Spa Resort

on the club’s doorstep.

Caloundra Golf Club, which can lay claim to producing former Open Championship winner Ian Baker-Finch, has produced numerous state and national champions.

The Ross Watson-designed island linksstyle championship course is impressive as it merges island life, water and golf.

Visitors are always welcome at Caloundra and social times are available most days. Motorised carts and golf equipment are available for hire. The clubhouse, which overlooks the 18th green and fairway, incorporates a fullyequipped bar and dining room while the pro shop has an excellent range of clubs and accessories. One of the attractions is each day at 4pm the Rainbow Lorikeets arrive and visitors are welcome to participate in the feeding activity. Caloundra Golf Club Charles Woodward Dr, Caloundra 4551 Tel (07) 5491 1811 www.caloundragolfclub.com.au

Watson describes the course as “risk and reward”, which works well for championship, resort and club golf. The bunkering at Pacific Harbour Golf and Country Club is a standout feature. The short holes (par-3s) are exceptional with the 17th having the longest bunker in the Southern Hemisphere. Water can be seen at every turn with reflective lakes, the ocean in the background and even the clubhouse is “floating” over a lake and aquatic driving range. The once lifeless stretch of land allowed Watson the rare opportunity to create a golf course in the spirit of golf’s Scottish heritage of seaside, links-style courses. Beach bunkers merge with lake edges with natural grasses, reed and sedges.

ENGRAVED into the mind of a golfing traveller is the hope he might stumble upon an island paradise.

The 250-metre aquatic driving range, putting green and practice pitching area are located adjacent to the 18th fairway.

A golfer seeking such a place should consider Pacific Harbour Golf and Country Club on Bribie Island, which is a 50-minute drive north of Brisbane and 30 minutes from the Sunshine Coast.

When Watson designed the golf course, he said it would be “challenging, memorable and visually attractive” and he’s right.

The golf is far better than any traveller has a right to expect and golfers can playand-stay with The Golfer’s Lodge virtually

The course was opened for play in 1912, and was later remodelled in 1975. Murray Downs Golf & Country Club One of Inside Golf’s favourite courses in the region, the award-winning Murray Downs Golf & Country Club has been consistently voted in the top resort courses around Australia, and for good reason, as it is a truly top-notch course. A former winner of Victorian PGA Course of The Year, Murray Downs features magnificent golf and picturesque views—complete with river gums in every direction. The course is presented in immaculate condition, and features some of the best greens anywhere. During a recent round there, we found ourselves uttering the word “magic” at nearly every hole. Yes, the course is that special.

The course’s signature hole is the par-3 5th, which requires a long water carry to the green, while also missing the huge bunkers on the left. Beautiful and challenging, it takes some skill to score a par here. The best part is that Murray Downs is playable to all handicaps, featuring a solid combination of risk-reward options, bailout areas and challenges throughout. This makes it ideal for the “Annual Boys Golf Weekend”, or just a quick getaway with friends. The Murray Downs Resort is located opposite the 16th fairway and only a short stroll from the Clubhouse and Pro Shop. You can be out your door and on the first tee within minutes. The resort is the perfect place to wind down after your day on the course with a large tropical pool, indoor heated spa, barbeque area and if you’re feeling like some more energetic activity they have a tennis court as well. Let the night take you away as you enjoy the peace and serenity of the country lifestyle. Don’t be surprised to share the glorious sunset with a few kangaroos, they can often be spotted from your room. country Australia. Featuring two 18hole championship golf courses—the Presidents and the Captains courses— the golf club offers the highest level of service and quality in all aspects of the game from course conditioning to practice facilities and the clubhouse amenities. 2013, Black Bull Golf Club has continued to impress, with over 1000 golfing enthusiasts testing out the ThomsonPerrett-designed course over the past five months and giving it their tick of approval. The recent completion of a number of new holes has now added two short par-4s which require a precise tee shot to avoid the fairway bunkers, thereby allowing for a short pitch shot to a wellguarded green. A monster par-5 then awaits golfers with a water obstacle located along the right side of the fairway and a greenside bunker lying in wait for the errant approach shot. This is then followed by

I

S this the perfect start to an African adventure?

Tunya National Park, a world-heritage site overlooking the mighty Victoria Falls.

You arrive by plane and transported to a luxury hotel by boat to enjoy a unique dining experience on a famous old steam train – all on the same day.

Nevson guns the motor and we’re off at a great rate of knots slowing only to photograph a family of hippopotamus or some of the river’s amazing birdlife.

Welcome to Livingstone, Zambia – home of the Victoria Falls, the wild Zambezi River, spectacular wildlife, safaris, rich culture and friendly people.

The river is serene and breathtaking and within minutes I hear what is known is this part of the world as the Smoke that Thunders – a term used to describe the greatest known curtain of falling water, the Victoria Falls.

It’s mid-afternoon when I arrive at Zambia’s Livingstone Airport and within minutes I’m escorted to the mighty Zambezi River where my guide, Nevson, is waiting to take me to downriver to the Sun International’s magnificent Royal Livingstone hotel. The hotel is located within the Mosi-oa-

On arrival, some of the more energetic hotel guests opt for a swim in the pool but after a long flight, I need a massage.

Pre-dinner drinks are served as the train travels parallel to the Zambezi River and through the national park where you may glimpse white rhino, buffalo, elephant and other game.

The massage tables are in a private open-air gazebo on the banks of the Zambezi.

And as the sun sets across the water, a four-course dinner with fine wines is served in air-conditioned comfort.

This allows guests to view and appreciate the indigenous wildlife via a mirror strategically angled under the massage table.

It was the perfect way to end the day and whet my appetite for the days ahead.

And you can choose from facials, Swedish, sports and other body treatments. The Royal Livingstone hotel also serves traditional high tea in the lounge or on

hotel and are particularly naughty at meal times as they attempt to steal a bread roll or piece of fruit. For their part, the vigilant hotel staff work hard to keep the mischievous monkeys at bay, but occasionally the monkeys have a win. After breakfast, I head for the Victoria Falls where guide Alex invites me to sit on a log close a metre from the edge of the falls. Nearby are a brave couple cooling off in a two-metre deep Devil’s rock pool just centimetres from the edge of the falls as water cascades over the edge. One hundred metres below white-water rafters take up the challenge while from the bridge that crosses to Zimbabwe people are bungy jumping into the deep gorge. Lunch on Livingstone Island overlooking the falls is a delicious, traditional cold spicy chicken soup and a beef salad washed down by a classic white wine.

We have only left the shore when Nevson declares the bar open and I knock the top off a Mosi (local beer), sit back and take in the awe-inspiring beauty of the Zambezi River.

Narrow fairways, deep rough and undulating greens make the course a real challenge – as do the termite mounds in the middle of the fairways on some holes.

A little later, we dock on an island where we enjoy a mouth-watering feast. Occasionally a helicopter or a microlight will buzz overhead en route to the Victoria Falls where joy riders enjoy a bird’s eye view. As the day begins to fade, we return to the hotel’s river deck to take in the grand sweep of the watery horizon burnt gold by the sun while sipping a sun-downer in one of Africa’s most romantic settings. As I head for dinner, I pass a couple of zebra grazing on the lawns in front of the hotel.

At 4pm, it’s back to the river for a twohour cruise.

It’s been another adventure day in paradise and my mind turns to golf.

My Pinehurst / US Masters

’ t s i l t e k c u ‘B Tour

Seeing the Masters live at Augusta remains a bucket-list dream for just about every golfer. Go Golfing’s annual tour to the Masters makes this dream a reality and Tours Manager Tracey-Lea Tiley shares her first Masters tour. By Tracey-Lea Tiley

Day 1

Before heading to Augusta, our trip took us to Charlotte, North Carolina, where we were treated to America’s southern charm. Smiling staff greeted us at the airport and our first hotel – The Ballantyne - justified my expectations of this bucket list tour. After a long flight, a delicious meal accompanied by a smooth Pinot from the Napa Valley saw me retiring to a heavenly bed that recharged the batteries. It was time to hitch the wagon and make tracks to “Planet Pinehurst”. Approaching Pinehurst you can’t help but notice the increasing density in churches; very fitting, as most golfers pray over those three-foot putts. Welcome to the Bible belt!

US Masters Champion Bubba Watson during the traditional Par-3 Tournament

INSIDE GOLF TRAVEL | June 2014

We were all looking forward to our arrival at the stately Pinehurst Resort an impressive welcome before a sunny afternoon of golf on the tough No. 4 Course. Scores reflected the masterly design and sense of history the resort captured. Pinehurst is an absolute pleasure and even if you were not touring

the Masters I recommend a visit! After golf if you’re looking for a commiserative ale, it doesn’t have a 19th hole – they have a 91st! There are currently eight courses at Pinehurst with a ninth planned to come online in May 2015, plus space for another three on the resort. Our welcome dinner that evening allowed us all to get to know each other in a relaxed environment via a Calcutta to decide Masters winners and a thoroughly entertaining fireside chat with player agent, Tony Bouffler who shared what it’s like to live life ‘inside the ropes’.

Day 2

Our next round at Pinehurst was quite a treat on the much lauded No. 2 Course – caddies are arranged and you should take the advice of your caddie. They are extremely knowledgeable, experienced and will be worth the tip you give them! Funnily enough, the caddies were having a friendly wager on their players - not that our group needed any further distraction or intimidation! What a day playing the course that will host the Men’s and Ladies Open this month. Whilst the group were playing I had plenty of time to immerse myself in “Planet Pinehurst” and for me, this was mind blowing looking at all of the history carefully secured behind glass cabinets in the clubhouse. Player badges from Ryder Cups past and so many other personal keepsakes from players really do illustrate a strong and proud American golf history. And, a seriously awesome golf shop was on my hit list!

Three legends of the game, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player

Day 3

A wet, cold morning lay ahead for our round on No. 8. Many of the group described this as the most picturesque course at Pinehurst and had the weather been golden it would surely have been the pick of the bunch. As the weather gods would have it, not many completed their round (and wisely so!). We had heard that the bad weather was rolling in at Augusta and to prepare for hurricane conditions. Play for the practice round at The Masters had been called off but that did not stop our bus of raucous

Australians patriotically singing their way into Aiken, South Carolina. Hearty renditions of (Land)” Down Under” and “I Still Call Australia Home” announced our arrival.

Day 4

Had to pinch myself, we were on the way to the Masters! This was the day many of the group had been waiting for their whole adult lives - to set foot on this sacred ground. And I have to admit I was just as wide-eyed as my guests. As a budding amateur photographer

this was what I was eagerly waiting for. Even walking through the gates, you could not help but be impressed with the style of the buildings in tournament green ….and the grass. The grass was lush, dark green and despite a mini tornado and torrential rain the day before, it was perfect. First stop, the practice tee. A large grandstand is positioned behind the tee, everyone had great views and the timing of my arrival was superb. Adam Scott had just made his way to the range and was welcomed by the huge roar that is only

Masters Course. Watching the players interact with their families is an absolute highlight – seeing tomorrow’s legends with mini putters and drivers, overalls and proudly striding down the fairways with their famed dads/husbands/grandfathers is great fun (cue Jason Day’s little boy – what a swing, one handed!). Perhaps the greatest roars and cheers came for three of the game’s elder statesmen; seeing Arnold Palmer shuffle his way around was an occasion not lost on the crowd. Watching the effortless play of Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player, you appreciate just how great they still are. And even better than seeing them, was seeing them give plenty of love back to the spectators – they sure know how to work a crowd.

Australia’s Matt Jones with Craig “The Walrus” Stadler savoured for a popular past champion. Miguel Angel Jimenez was also warming up, complete with stogie cigar and flowing ponytail. Luke Donald and Vijay Singh were also firing them down the range. It’s a congenial atmosphere that has complete strangers strike up a conversation, with everyone loving an Aussie here. On the 1st Tee, I had the pleasure of watching Matt Jones, Mike Weir (who later nailed a hole-in-one), and The Walrus (Craig Stadler). What you don’t get

on TV when you see the 1st hole is the undulation. I was surprised by just how hilly the layout is and my hind quarters felt it the next day! But after the fried food of the ‘deep south’ I needed a good walk and what a place to do it.

they’ve teed off on the 16th is to take another ball and skip it across the lake in front of the green. What follows is much cheering, banter and the atmosphere is really light-hearted, in this usually buttoned up environment.

After watching Bernhard Langer (so incredibly stylish for a gentleman of a certain age!) and Vijay on the 10th it was time to walk the walk. So it was off to the 15th/16th/17th , a great spot to watch the players in a more relaxed atmosphere. One of the cool things they do once

By this stage our charming southern village of Aiken and base during the tournament was starting to rev up and Wednesday night was karaoke night. With early starts everyone was back in time to get their Masters fix – and on Thursday and Friday as Australians we were in the box seat barracking Adam Scott home to a repeat win. Sadly, it was not to be… this year. Dawn had risen on the final day at The Masters and many of our group had varying strategies to land themselves the best view. For some it was a start at the crack of dawn and a scramble to the 18th green to place your chair down. Others decided to place their chairs down at the 16th or Amen Corner and spend the morning following their favourite players. I walked the course with a group of six and we were really proud to be following leading amateur, Oliver Goss for the first nine holes. What a talent and such a cool and composed young man. We then relaxed at the back of the 6th green watching all of the groups come though. But it was very clear, birdies were double the price today! Nobody was buying them! Freddy Couples, clearly the coolest “all American” man on the course, was welcomed at every tee and green with hearty cheers and a standing ovation. We watched Bubba Watson launch a massive drive down the 10th –it’s crazy how far he drives a ball. My own Masters strategy was to make my way early to the 18th and get a spot before the crowds descended. Worked brilliantly! I was inline with the pin, 3rd row back with a perfect view of the green.

Go Golfing guests enjoyed rounds of golf at Pinehurst during their US Masters Tour

The bellowing sounds of ‘KOOOCH’ when Kuchar hit it into the crowd just a few metres from me drew plenty of laughs (the ball landed on a spectator’s lap – now that’s a difficult lie!). From Scotty through to Bubba’s last putt – this was better than I had ever hoped or dreamed! •

Masters tips: - Shop early! Merchandise at the Masters sells out, so don’t leave it until the weekend. - Buy a chair and put it down at your preferred location early. A great Masters tradition is that you can leave your chair and come back later to it. - Top spots to watch: 6th/7th hole, Amen Corner, 15th/16th/17th tee and the 18th. Really there are no bad views and there are a number of clusters where you can see a few things going on from one spot. - Try a traditional pimento cheese sandwich. An acquired taste!
