CHILE

COUNTRY

What makes Chile special is that, with its length of approximately 4300 km (2670 mi), it features almost all climate zones on earth, with the exception of the tropics. Chile has approximately 19 Million inhabitants, almost half of them living in Santiago and the central region. The easiest way to travel around Chile is by plane. Due to the large distances between the highlights of Chile, it is the fastest way to get to know the country.

PEOPLE

The cultural and climatic differences have characterized the identity of the country and its people. Warm, kind, energetic and approachable, Chileans share the love for their country, which invites you to build relationships and to live unique experiences. Chileans are faithful followers of their traditions and customs and celebrate their most important festivals each year.

WEATHER

Due to its location on the southern hemisphere, seasons in Chile are opposite to Europe and North America. The warmest months are January and February, the coldest July and August.

The north of Chile The north of Chile is defined by a dry desert climate all year round. During the day, it is mostly sunny with high temperatures, which drop at night, sometimes below freezing. Particularly extreme climatic conditions prevail on the Altiplano. Due to the altitude (average 3,600 m.a.s.l. (11,800 ft.)), temperatures drop below freezing easily at night.

Chile’s central zone The Chile’s central zone reflects a Mediterranean climate, which is characterized by long and very warm summers. The winter is relatively short, somewhat cooler and characterized by slightly increasing precipitation. This applies particularly to the valley that is located in between the Andes and the coastal cordillera, including the metropolitan region of Santiago.

The south of Chile Temperatures in the Lake District between Valdivia and Puerto Varas/Puerto Montt further south remain below 25° C (75° F) all year round (with exceptions). The proximity to the ocean provides for a constant, often frosty wind, so that a wind jacket is recommended all year round. With 2000–3500 mm (78–118 in) of precipitation per year, rain can always be expected here, although June to August are considered the wettest months.

Patagonia Southern Patagonia has a cold-temperate steppe climate all year round, with temperatures often below freezing. At higher altitudes, the climate can be considered polar. During the summer months, temperatures rise up to 25° C (75° F) in exceptional cases. Precipitation – rain and snow – is relatively regular throughout the year.

Islands A subtropical climate with moderate rainfall can be found on the Juan Fernandez Archipelago and on Easter Island. This island, which geographically belongs to Polynesia, is one of the most isolated inhabited places in the world and located at a distance of approximately 3,500 km (2170 mi) from the Chilean mainland.
