EDITORIAL Last weekend it happened again: possibly the biggest studentorganized and coordinated event on campus, Kassun Lanit, was arranged. As with the last time, the event was a success, with most of the 72 computer seats being taken within the first two hours of sign-ups. The event was a blast, even if it tends to mess the sleeping rhythms of both its organizers and attendants.

Understandably, some of us are still very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, tired.

But it was worth it.

THE “JOYS” OF MOVING A while ago I received an email from my landlord, saying that I have to move because they have to renovate my apartment, and since then I have been thinking about all the joys of moving... oh God… I mean moving into a new place can be hard or exciting or fun, depends how you take it. For me honestly, it has been very frustrating. I hate packing, except for trips, and usually after the trip it takes me a month or so to unpack my luggage… so imagine moving into a new house.

Since the topic is the joys of moving (can you feel the sarcasm?), let me tell you a little bit of those now; the best part of moving is the fact that you can go through your stuff (clothes, kitchen equipment, or even furniture) and sell the items you don’t use or need anymore. You can sell those items in our university’s official second hand store on Facebook (It’s called Kirppis/Second Hand Store KyAMK on Facebook), and there you can also find new treasures for your new apartment also. Since I already started talking about the new apartment, let’s continue to the next best thing; you can decorate your new apartment in totally new way. It might cost a bit, but “out with the old in with the new” phrase says it all ;). At least getting rid of unnecessary items is something that I am planning to do, and making some space for new items. It also gives you the opportunity to have a fresh start, declutter and get organized.

The last part of the joys of moving is the fact that you might get a flatmate, at least that’s the situation for me. Honestly, I am excit-

ed about having a flatmate, because in my current apartment I used to live alone, and sometimes it would get very boring, but now I won’t have that problem anymore.

I consider myself very lucky, because I didn’t have to move far from home when I started studying in Kouvola, but when I talk with my friends, who had to move here from another country because of their studies, it makes me wonder, how did they pack all their most important belongings into 2 big luggage and left the rest behind? Please, someone help me! ;) This apartment was my first apartment, and I was honestly clueless but my heart was full of excitement, and I was very nervous, luckily I had my family to help me move in and survive the first few weeks.

If you face this same problem, and you have to move to another apartment, there are some local housing companies, for example Kouvolan Asunnot Oy or Suhola-yhtiöt, where they rent houses to student’s also.

And if you have heavy furniture and need a car to transfer your belongings, there are also companies to rent a car, or get help with the moving itself. It costs quit a lot, but they can be very helpful.

Anyways, I will continue packing before I start to bore you, enjoy your week and I wish you all lots of luck and patience if you are going through some changes in your life!

AN INTERVIEW ABOUT

CARDBOARD FOOD Karolina Bajerova is a Czech business student from Prague. She’s been in Kouvola since August last year. Karolina loves sports, especially ice hockey, but she also likes to cook vegan food.

When did you decide to become a vegan and why? I became vegetarian more than 2 years ago. It was due to ethical reasons because I love animals and I didn't want to be part of these eating habits anymore.

So I began reducing other animal products such as milk, eggs, honey and butter for almost one year. But I didn't feel good because I still was not 100% away from hurting animals so I decided to cut everything here in Finland.

I’m vegan about 3 months now.

Were there any health concerns in the beginning? Of course, I was afraid if I can replace all nutrients and still have enough energy and be healthy. Despite what you may have heard, protein is actually not much of a worry for most vegans. For example, veggies, beans, hemp, nut butter, non-dairy milk, tofu, quinoa, tempeh are food that also contain proteins. However, you should monitor iron, zinc, calcium, and especially Vitamin B-12. I get a lot of vitamins from yeast, which I put in a lot of food. It's always really funny, how some people are so concerned about my sources of quality nutrition while they don't even care about their nutrition spending time eating cakes, chips and fast food.

Do you miss some food you enjoyed before becoming vegan? How do you find substitutes? I have never been big fan of meat and I’ve been really picky when it came to it. I ate mostly chicken and salami on bread or beef in burgers. My parents were always rolling their eyes, when I was eating chicken, because I usually just ate the nice parts and then left the rest on the plate. But I used to like the taste a lot. I think what I miss the most are candies.

Cookies, cakes, ice-cream, etc.

But there are so many options these days for making everything non-dairy. Including cheese, which can be made from soya or nuts.

Did you have any problems with your family or environment regarding your diet change? When I told my parents that I decided to become vegetarian, my mum just said that I'm old enough to decide for myself but that I can't expect that she will cook something special for me. I think they didn't believe that I'm serious, but after a month she was always trying to find some cool vegetarian recipe. It wasn't easy at all at the beginning.

Mostly with my relatives, because they still don't understand my reasons. People tend to think

that vegans belong to a hippie cult. In my opinion, veganism is connected to a strong opinion, regarding morals and health.

Do you have any recommendations for people who would like to become vegan as well?

Every big change needs time.

When your eating habits include lot of meat and dairy, you can't just abandon it suddenly. The best way is to reduce these products. If you believe, that something is wrong and you don't want to be part of it anymore, don't be afraid of making mistakes. Everyone does mistakes and that’s usually the best way how to learn something new. Even reducing means a lot.

What kind of vegan social media channels do you recommend? I recommend the Facebook Groups Vegan Finland and Vegan Humor. There are a lot of vegan activists on social media channels, such as Jon Venus, Gary Yourofsky and Melanie Joy. When it comes to vegan food I follow the Instagram channels Minimalist Baker, Thug Kitchen and bestofvegan.

Last weekend, Xamk’s now semiannual LAN party event was arranged for the third time. Almost 70 people brought their computers to the titular space of Meduusa Studio, and over the weekend a hundred other people showed up on location. The people with their own computers were able to play whatever they pleased, however, judging by its prevalence on the screens across the hall one would think playing Overwatch was obligatory.

The participants that didn’t feel like hauling their PCs all the way to Meduusa were able to try the newest consoles and multitude of recent releases in the console lounge, from which the party game Jackbox.

TV and mascot racer Mario Kart 8 proved to be particularly popular. For attendants looking for a break from staring at their screens, bucketload of board and card games were made available in the lobby beside the studio, ranging from modern classics like Ticket to Ride and Dominion, to cult favourites like Sushi Go and One Night Ultimate Werewolf.

Those tired from the excessive sitting in front of the computer/console/board game were able to lay their weary heads to rest in the Arthouse. In addition, people were often caught napping on the sofas and beanbags in the lounge area despite the music, loud chatter and occasional shouting and swearing. The latter was most prevalent during the latter parts of the tournaments.

Speaking of which: once again, multiple competitions were arranged over the weekend. On Friday, the tournaments were held for League of Legends, Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, and the now-classic Crash Team Racing. All of these tournaments continued well into Saturday, and the finals for both CTR and LoL had to be postponed until Saturday afternoon due to the increasing exhaustion of the participants.

In addition to the postponed finals, tournaments hosted on Saturday included Super Smash Bros. and Overwatch. As what seems to already to be a norm, the Overwatch tournament ran for over eight hours, until around 2 A.M. The prizes were kindly sponsored

by XAMK, Omoi.fi, POWER, GameStop, Kouvolan Lakritsi, Papulaari and McDonalds.

On Sunday, the LAN action was suddenly cut short by a chance bottle of water fell and spilled its contents on an extension cord under mysterious circumstances, effectively cutting off the internet access from the whole hall. Fortunately no harm to any equipment was caused, and it was already two in the afternoon, so everyone was ready to pack their gear and get out anyway.

Overall, the third installment in the Kassun Lanit was the biggest event thus far, drawing XAMK students from all the way from Savonlinna. Here’s to hoping the one next fall will be even better!

CHICKPEA CUTLETS

IT COULD BE A GIRL BAND WITH A PERFECT NAME BUT IT’S NOT A GIRL BAND IT’S FOOD

If you love hummus, you'll adore these cutlets. If you don't like hummus, you'll adore these anyways. These are fairly easy to make, there's not too many ingredients and you'll end up with cutlets that have an excellent taste with a good portion of protein.

What you do: 1. Mash the chickpeas together with a little bit of oil until there are no whole chickpeas anymore. The mixture doesn’t have to be totally smooth, do not try to make it into a puree. The cutlets will be nicer to eat when there are chunks to chew. Chickpeas are easy to mash with a fork but with the help of a blender it is much quicker.

Crush garlic into the mix at this point. Add chili and feta cheese.

Mix well. Add then whisked eggs and breadcrumbs. Sauté crushed onion but be careful not to burn them. Add onion crush into the mix.

Mix well.

2. You can prepare cutlets either on a pan or then in the oven. Oven is the easier way and also this way the cutlets hold together better.

The choice is yours. If you choose wisely, you'll then pre-heat the oven in 200-220 degrees.

3. Once your cutlet dough is ready, you just simply mold cutlets out of it; make each one approximately 2cm thick. Set them in the oven for 15-20 minutes. The cutlets are at their best once you've let them rest for a while, maybe 10-15 minutes. Prepare a fresh salad on the side and enjoy the dish with some hot sour cream sauce.

ampha has made his audience wait for him in a way that makes Axl Rose look like perfectly punctual performer: for over half a decade the English singer-songwriter and producer has gathered buzz by appearing on tracks by the likes of Kanye West, Drake, Jessie Ware and Frank Ocean, alongside with his regular collaborations with the electronic project SBTRKT, teasing his listeners with only small bits of solo material. Now, seven years after his debut EP, Sampha releases his first full-length album Process.

Compared to the unfinished bare-bones instrumentation and production of his previous EPs, Process is clearly a well thought-out, finished product. Sampha’s James Blake -esque, wavering and passionate vocals are accompanied mostly by electronic, synthetic loops and processed sounds from roughly twenty years into the future, sprinkled with occasional live drum tracks. “Kora Sings” features galloping beats, percussive drumming and sharp synth spikes; “Under” builds an eerie atmosphere with uncommon timed snare hits and cold keyboards played in shrill minor key; “Timmy’s Prayer” starts out as swinging spiritual pastiche and two thirds in turns to increasingly busy and layered electronic track, growing into a triumphant finale. However, to balance out the overabundance of extravagant electronics the album features a couple of stripped-back tracks where Sampha is backed sole-

ly by pristine piano. These types of tracks can easily become boring filler by anyone lesser than Billy Joel, but here the exact opposite happens: “(No One Knows Me) Like the Piano”, a heartfelt confessional is one of the high points on the album.

Despite the instrumental variation in sound the album never feels unfocused or incoherent, mostly because of the general, overarching mood of the album, located in the Venn diagram where ‘Sad’ and ‘Heartbroken’ overlap. Another helping factor is that Process was produced in collaboration with Rodaidh McDonald, who has had a hand in the production of the entire discography of The xx. That can be heard during the quieter moments and slower tracks of the album, but only in a good way, utilizing the lush keyboards and production while never falling to the comatose-level of inactivity associated with xx, even on the slower tracks like “Plastic 100°C” and “Incomplete Kisses”.

Despite some of the less flashy tracks kind of melting into the whole, Process is an incredibly well-written, well-produced and well-performed debut album. It might have taken Sampha seven years to make this album happen, but it had been well worth the wait.  Roope Sorvo

FIFTY SHADES

The colour which struck my attention on Valentines Day 2017 was not the classic red or even the more playful pink. The hue of the day was a distracting blue. I had given some blue flowers to my girlfriend who was in turn wearing blue. For some reason this was on my mind as we viewed Fifty Shades Darker in the cinema. She had seen the previous movie in the series where I was still a virgin when it came to this more mature version of Twilight. When I say more mature I mean in theory, as from what I have heard and even what the movie insinuates is some full on torture porn. Not the torture porn one might see in any of the Saw movies but a more sensual version.

The problem with producing and releasing such a film in the United States is based in the Puritan culture of the country. The movie rating system is so oddly specific in what is and is not allowed in a movie. For example, if a flick uses the F-bomb once (and not in a sexual way) it can be given a PG-13 rating. If fuck is mentioned more than once (or used in a sexual way) the movie is automatically branded with an R rating.

phoney that it would make a soap opera look like a Stanley Kubrick film. A half-assed antagonist sortof gets what is coming to him, then you find out at the end that he isn’t dead? Christian’s mom was a crackhead so he abuses women who look like her? There is a moment of suspense near the last 20 minutes but then once you start to care the movie says, “Just kidding!”

So then why even bother starting that thread?

Now how is this related to “torture porn”? In the case of the Saw movies, where multiple victims are subjected to horrific, bloody, and medieval torture, everything is shown. No real censorship is being taken out on ripping apart the human body but on the other hand when it comes to “sensual torture porn” a la Fifty Shades Darker, nothing is shown. Sure all the weapons or “toys” in Christian Grey’s closet are visible, but once they are taken on the many, many, trips to the bedroom they are obstructed from view. Every time the main characters are having sex the camera cuts to their faces. Not that I am really asking for it, but Mr. Grey only fully de-robes once.

These factors ironically make the sex scenes the most boring ones of the entire film.

The acting is equally atrocious. Annastasia is so ready to jump into bed with Christian that you would swear she is just a free prostitute.

Christian walks up with an open hand to a girl wielding a gun then she just kneels for him. Anna cries and then they have monotonous sex. Wake me up when it is over.

At least the music must be good, right?

I mean the opening credits mention Danny Elfman. No, even the music is poppy trash that adds nothing to the picture.

Speaking of obstruction, whoever was the director of photography needs to go back to school. The work here is completely uninspired.

No movement, no framing, horrible composition, no inventive tricks and no incentive to keep watching.

The whole point of a movie is to show not tell. Some directors may use creative methods to insinuate plot elements but none of that is done here. The plot is so loose and

The one thing that got me through this chore was the colour blue. Nearly every frame had something of this shade. A shirt, an earing, a painting, etc. Maybe I was just escaping this torture like a starving child desperately wanting a crumb of bread. The bread was my escape from this cliché. I had to escape though, otherwise you might end up going to see this movie. Who am I kidding, most people will see it anyway knowing it will be bad. When you get bored play a game with the person next to you and try to find as many blue things as possible on screen. It will distract you from this major dud.  Grayson Leif Heflin
