Editor’s Letter

Fellow Insiders, welcome to another fantastic edition of Inside Soca, where we aim to showcase our Caribbean culture through Carnival and showcase the multitude of talented individuals who operate behind the scenes, ensuring the success of our beautiful festival.

As we continue our journey through these challenging times, we are grateful to be alive and still be able to keep you entertained by sharing our culture across different countries. We have all been affected by this pandemic and sometimes struggle to accept this new way of life. We were forced to stay indoors, to protect our families, friends, our Carnivals and our health care system (NHS).

To all our NHS staff, all the health care workers across the globe, all the key workers across various sectors, that braved the current climate to ensure that life continued for others, we say – THANK YOU.

In this exciting issue, we welcome back our Kidz of Carnival segment, which has been rebranded to Rising Stars. We felt the need to widen the age bracket, as there is an ocean of young talented stars, tasked and ready to take our culture into the future.

Our search for our culture through Carnivals, took us to Germany, where all the cultures are celebrated in a display of true love and togetherness. During the Carnival, there are no bystanders, as everyone gets involved. Whether you are in a T-shirt or full costume in a Caribbean band, the experience is EPIC. Needless to say, whatever your actions are, Soca made you do it. Berlin Carnival has developed over the years to become one of our mandatory

events. Although this year, like most other countries, the celebrations were postponed due to the Coronavirus, we made sure the memory and vibe stays alive.

We also welcome a new classified column, where we advertise, and support all interested black owned businesses. Although events remain restricted, our aim at Inside Soca remains the same. Our vision and focus coupled with the passion to showcase our exciting culture, continues to drive us.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to all our readers for your overwhelming support. We promise to keep pushing the boundaries of creativity to remain a stimulus in our cultural community. As usual, please continue to follow us on all our social media platforms and share our publications with your friends and family. Thank you for your continued support.

July’s Edition

(Covid-19) –

The ‘Lockdown’ Relaxes –The Final Countdown…

The United Kingdom (UK) has now decided that it is time to aim for a gradual relaxation of the lockdown rules. All persons including those who are ‘shielding’, will be able to go back to some form of normality in the Coronavirus (Covid-19) new ‘normal’ world.

The UK Prime Minister announced the easing of further lockdown restrictions.

From July 4th 2020:-

All pubs, restaurants and hairdressers will be able to reopen so long as they adhere to the Covid-19 guidelines (GOV.UK, WHO 2020).

From the 4th of July 2020: -

*Two households will be able to meet in any settings providing they maintain social distancing.

*People can now enjoy staycations in England with the reopening of accommodation sites. Some leisure facilities, tourist attractions, indoor gyms, Cinema’s, Museums, Galleries, Theme Parks, *Arcades, Libraries’, Social Club’s, Places of Worship and Community centres, yet again, so long as they all can provide and maintain social distancing.

*All the regular rules will still apply – you will still need to wash/sanitize your hands, stay two metres apart if this is not possible, metre plus apart.

*You will be able to stay over with people who do not live with you and make a support bubble with another household.

People who are ‘shielding’ on medical grounds or classed as extremely vulnerable still advised to:-

*Stay at home as much as possible

*Keep visits outside and interactions to a minimum

*If spending time outdoors it should be with members of your own family, within your household.

*If you live alone, you can spend time with one person from another household, but not to be part of a support bubble with another household

*Continue to maintain social distancing, avoiding gatherings of any size. The government has advised those who are Shielding to continue until July 31st 2020. The government is continuing to review regularly.

From July 11th 2020 you can:-

*Participate in team and other grassroots sports – provided this can be done safely, where the governing body has issued guidance on how to do so safely.

*Outdoor pools can also reopen.

*Public Health England (PHE 2020) has issued guidelines for employers on making the work environment ‘Covid-19’ friendly, ensuring that workplace employees can work safely during the coronavirus pandemic.

Therefore, from July 13th 2020 all close contact services such as:Nail bars, salons, tanning booths, spas, massage parlours, body piercing studio’s can reopen.

From July 24th 2020:-

Face coverings will need to be worn in public places from this date. You must wear a face-covering at all times on public transport or when attending a hospital as a visitor or outpatient (GOV.UK). Also face coverings should be worn when you are unable to maintain social distancing or if you come into contact with people you normally don’t meet.

From July 25th 2020 you can:-

*Sports facilities and venues, indoor gyms, fitness and dance studios, indoor swimming pools, and indoor water parks can reopen too.

*You can now see family and friends for up to two households in any location (anyone in your support bubbly counts as one household).

*While outside, you can continue to meet in small groups of up to six people from different households.

*Stay overnight away from your home, with your household/support bubble, adhering to social distancing regulations. More information can be found on the UK government website (GOV. UK).

REMEMBER:

It is still against the law for gatherings of more than 30 people in private homes, public places, gardens or outdoor spaces unless it is planned by an organization and complies with Covid-19: Guidance for the safe use of multi-purpose community facilities (GOV.UK)

Travel Corridors

The UK Government has now decided that it is safe to ease the lockdown when entering the UK. Measures introduced now include travel corridors exemptions for some countries and territories. UK Coronavirus regulations mean that you must self-isolate for 14 days if you arrive in the UK from a country outside the common travel area (GOV.UK)

Please read the UK regulations before you attempt to travel to the UK. The same can be said for any of our Caribbean islands who will also have travel regulations in place. Please check with your country of origin or destination before travel arrangements are made.

Remember…

The Coronavirus (COVID-19) is still ‘out there’ and has not gone away. We need to continue to follow all our countries rules and regulations. As the UK government continues to state, the most important thing is to: Stay Alert, Control the Virus, and, in doing so, Save Lives (GOV.UK).

A guide to Berlin’s Carnival of Cultures (Karneval der Kulturen)

Carnival is colour. Carnival is mas. Carnival is unity, no place for a division of class. The freedom to express yourself without ever being hurt, Carnival is everything, the greatest show on earth.

Karneval der Kulturen (Carnival of culture) reflects Berlin’s cultural diversity and an embodiment of Carnival’s genetic makeup. It is a platform where every ethnic body can freely showcase their culture and engage with supporting onlookers. The streets are usually full of participants, flanked by thousands of enthusiasts of all age brackets. It is rated as one of the best Carnivals in Europe, behind London’s Notting Hill. From the local dances and rhythmic beats echoing from different drums, to the ear thumping sound systems, all round energy and vibrancy of the international visitors, Karneval der Kulturen is a must-go event.

It brings together a range of professional artists with varying skills, both young and old. With such an assemble, there are numerous on and off-stage productions, exciting musical arrangements, endless partying opened towards new trends and styles in youth and minority culture.

Like every Carnival, there is a narrative. The first Karneval der Kulturen took place on the 15th and 16th of May 1996 and was organised by the Werkstatt der Kulturen, a cultural institution which consistently focuses on transculturality and diversity. The concept behind the Carnival was developed during a period of political and economic changes which stemmed from the fall of the Berlin Wall and the unification of the German states. This resulted in a lot of social, cultural, and economical differences and conflicts, with xenophobic race riots becomng more prevalent.

From a population of about 3.5 million people that live in the German capital, there is an extremely large international population. Therefore, a change in people’s mentality and already existing patterns was needed. There had been several prior attempts to initiate a Carnival in Berlin, all of which patterned the likes of Carnival in Rio or Notting Hill in London. Unfortunately, the support was insufficient and could not be implemented in Berlin. However, with the concept of a Carnival which focussed on the cultural richness of Berlin, also highlighting the often hidden treasures of its international cultural scene, the Carnival of Cultures was the concept that was a success from the start and today is one of the six largest open air events in Germany.

What started as a two-day event, around Pentecost, with a visitor attendance of just over 50,000, rapidly expanded to a four-day festival, attracting just over 1.5 million enthusiasts. Although the Carnival was growing and successful, it was only in its second year (1997) when a street festival was introduced, and the first Children’s Carnival was celebrated.

The festival culminates in a colourful street parade with music and dance in Kreuberg. This event created a new awareness for Berlins cultural treasures with an emphasis on the strong impact made by its ethnic communities.

THE WEST INDIAN FLAVOUR

When it comes to jammin, wining and just pure energy, then the West Indian flavour is needed. It’s like that well-known secret that no one admits to knowing, until recently, as affirmed by Soca Artists, Voice and Kes in their 2020 soca hit “Dear Promoter”.

Berlin’s Carnival has been inspired by the Caribbean styled, European Carnivals such as, the Notting Hill Carnival in London and Rotterdam’s Zomercarnaval. It encompasses various elements of many Carnivals and celebrations around the world, attracting many international musical artists.

Inside Soca Magazine was privileged to spend some time with the mastermind behind one of the biggest Carnival promotions and leading Soca promotions in Berlin – Carnival Fever Entertainment (CFE). We learnt about the history behind Carnival Fever Entertainment (CFE), their highs and lows and a peek into their future.

Q: When was CFE founded and what was the motivation behind the idea?

Carnival Fever Entertainment was founded around the year 2007. It started with around 10 friends

just hanging out at Berlin’s Carnival. At the time there was no Caribbean community and what caught our attention was two Trinidadian ladies, in their 60’s, with their large Trinidad and Tobago flags, playing “Ole Mas.” They were having the time of their lives and instantly we felt there was an opportunity to bring the Caribbean style Carnival to Berlin.

Q: Who are the persons behind the name CFE?

At the beginning there were four of us, but two moved on to follow their own interest, leaving myself, Hendrik Sievert and a partner Andre Krueger.

Q: What was CFE’s first event and what was the response like?

Our first event (party) was called GLOW. An all-white event. Although we had a fair turnout, everyone had a blast. Straight away, we knew we had something with the potential to be the biggest soca events in Berlin.

Q: Who was the first major Soca Artist to perfom at Glow?

The first major Soca Artist/s to perform at Glow was Bunji and Fay Ann in 2008.

Q: How would you describe their performance?

Amazing. One of the good things about Bunji and Fay Ann, is that they know how to deliver. It was a night packed with pure energy. No one wanted to leave. They are true ambassadors for Soca music making Soca a global brand.

Q: How many events does CFE host during Berlin’s Carnival?

We currently host 12 premium events. That is around 100 hours of hard-core partying. These events are as follows :

SILENT ROOFTOP

This event is held on Thursday afternoon at around four o’clock. It is the kick start event for the Carnival weekend. Yes, I said it, it kick starts the weekend. In Berlin, the weekend starts whenever you want it to start, especially when there is a party involved. The concept behind this event is, a typical party style event, except the ravers would be supplied with headphones. There are 4 DJ’s on rotation, playing across two different channels, allowing party goers a choice of music.

SOCA ON THE BEACH

This event is only six years old (7th birthday cancelled for 2020), but it is undoubtedly the most sought-after event during Berlin’s Carnival weekend. Although Berlin is no where near an ocean, man made beaches are a popular thing, especially along the river Spree that runs through the city.

CARNIVAL BLACKOUT

Held on the Thursday night at a very classy venue, this event had a dress code of black and gold for this year 2020 (cancelled). In previous years it was a black-tie event, but after much consideration, it was decided to move away from that concept, as it is common knowledge that the typical Carnival wear is, as little as possible. Carnival Fever Entertainment felt it best to minimize the burden of their travelling fans bringing suits and formal wear.

The venue for the famous Soca on the beach is an old bus terminal that was sold about 20 years ago. The owners do not normally rent out the venue for events, however Carnival Fever Ent. managed to convince them and maintained a very good relationship with them, making the venue the home for Soca on the beach. There is a floating pool on the river, a large food court area and a basketball ring.

CARNIVAL CRUISE – I

This is another thrilling experience. It is one of two cruises that takes you through the city of Berlin, with Soca music blasting.

FIRE FETE

This event is usually held on the Friday night and carries the perfect title. Everything about this event is hot. It brings the hottest Soca DJs, not just from Europe, but from around the world. These include – Willy Chin, DJ Triple M, GC Sound, Stingray Disco and DJ Puffy, just to name a few. We also delivered some of the hottest Soca Artists across the globe – Patrice Roberts, Skinny Fabulous, Tallpree, King Bubba and Ricardo Drue. Last and by no means least, we attract the hottest Soca fans across the world.

JOUVERT

What is Carnival without Jouvert? The dirtiest event for Carnival. Jouvert is the time when any and everything goes. It’s otherwise known as “dutty” Mas, one of the most loved events in any Carnival , simply because you get down and dirty, since we all know that clean is a tad bit overrated.

The common practice for Jouvert in Berlin is the use of paint or powder. However, extreme caution must be taken to prevent paint from getting into the river, as this is a breach of Government regulations. Jouvert in Berlin kicks off at midday, which might seem unusual to frequent revellers. However, this is due to strict

Government regulation against early morning public gatherings. Nonetheless, Soca vibes has no time limit and Jouvert in Berlin is a yearly hit.

CARNIVAL GLOW

Dubbed as the largest indoor event for Berlin Carnival, Glow does not disappoint. Its an ALL WHITE event, usually with two floors/rooms, one for Soca and the other, Dancehall. It is the flagship event for Carnival Fever Ent and based on Inside Soca’s People Meter, one of the top event for the Carnival

CARNIVAL CRUISE II

The second of two parties on the water. With nonstop energy and vibes, good music, and plenty alcohol, its easy to forget that you’re cruising along on one Berlin’s most popular rivers.

It is the norm for this event to attract Soca’s best, such as – Bunji Garlin, Fay Ann Lyons, Machel Montano, Kes The Band, Voice, Destra, Alison Hinds, Lyrikal, and the list goes on.

DANCEHALL GLOW

This is the little brother to the flagship event Carnival Glow. It is usually held at the same venue to Carnival Glow, commanding its own room. The Jamaican influence in Berlin has always been the more dominant than other Caribbean Islands, with quite a few sounds being present throughout the year, such as – Sentinel, Warrior Sound and Sting Ray Disco.

SOCA OR DIE

This event is designed to bring the curtains down on your memorable Soca weekend. Hosted by Dr Jay, De Soca Prince, this event provides a live Soca performance. This year 2020, Soca or Die was going to be the host for two of the Spice Isle’s (Grenada) biggest Soca Artist – Lil Natty and Thunda.

ROAD PARADE

After three full days of good music, endless cheap alcohol and unlimited vibes, the main event is yet to come. Carnival Fever Ent. is usually accompanied by one of the celebrity artists from Glow as they pull out all plugs to ensure the road experience is not to be forgotten.

JAMAICAN RUM NIGHT

Just as Soca or Die closes the Soca experience for Berlin’s Carnival, so does Jamaica Rum Night for the Dancehall lovers. Guaranteed 100% Dancehall and Rum and Coke specials all night, ravers no doubt cash in on this event, until the next 100 hours of Berlin’s Carnival.

Q: What makes CFE different from other promotions?

Two things really – (1) We are reliable and (2) we are 100% dedicated. Looking back to where we started, we are proud of our accomplishment. However, there is always room for improvement. When we look at other promoters, we are happy for them as well, as this is not a competition. We are all doing the same thing, which is to put Berlin on the Carnival map. When Carnival Fever Ent. started there was no one providing that platform for Soca music to be showcased, to represent all the islands. So, we took the idea and developed what is today the largest Soca event agency in Germany.

We go after the best in the Soca industry, as we wanted to make Berlin Carnival the biggest and best in Europe. This requires a lot of work and involves us assuring the fans, especially our travelling fans from Europe and around the world, that we are going to deliver. So, reliability is a major factor.

Q: When did CFE first launch as a band?

In 2007, we started our own T shirt band, accompanied by a small truck. However, in 2009, we introduced our first costumes. We were privileged to work with 3 top designers from across Europe.

Q: Who are some of the designers that are on board with CFE?

We were amazed by the incredible talent that was available. Today we work with three incredibly talented designers.

Mas With a Difference.

Q: How did the pandemic affect CFE?

Like everyone else, Carnival Fever was affected by the pandemic. I usually make a few trips to China, as well as a lot of businessmen. Once I heard about the situation in China, I knew it was just a matter of time before it spread to Europe. We were monitoring the situation closely, as Berlin’s Carnival Weekender was fast approaching, and a lot of our event tickets were already sold out. We decided to put a block on the sale of tickets until further notice. It was a week later that our worst fears came through, with the announcement of a lockdown due to the virus.

We had already paid deposits to artists, fees and paid for other general things, so we knew that was all lost money. A lot of revellers started asking for a refund, but we knew if we refunded everyone then most likely Carnival Fever Ent would have to close permanently. We decided to appeal to revellers to retain their tickets as we will honour them in 2021. We also started a - Save the Berlin Carnival Weekender fundraiser, where we asked the supporters to donate to saving Berlin’s Carnival 2021.

I would like to take this opportunity to say a great big Thank You to those who donated and those who are unable to financially support but supported in other ways. Carnival Fever Entertainment, despite the current pandemic, has the greatest Soca supporters in Europe and possibly the world. Thank you all for the encouragement, maintaining the belief and trusting that we would be back bigger with double the vibes for 2021.

Carnival Fever has put Berlin on the Carnival map, designing the blueprint for maximum vibes. Today Berlin’s Carnival is rated as one of the best in Europe, second to Notting Hill. Carnival Fever has dominated and been forerunners in Soca entertainment, however today they are not the only promoters and bands in Berlin showcasing the Caribbean culture. Carnival Explosion is an all-inclusive Mas band, providing premium quality entertainment on the road. Some of the other events during Carnival weekend includes – ‘Up’ by Carnival Explosion and Emurgy Ent., ‘Ignition’ by Soca Berlin and ‘Dirty Brunch’ by Soca Berlin and Emurgy Ent.

We at Inside Soca Magazine, are 100% committed to the efforts of Hendrik and Andre in keeping Berlin’s Karneval der Kulturen alive. As well as supporting the Carnival weekender, lets also remember to continue to stay safe, as the future is in our hands.

This month’s edition of ‘Inside the Kitchen’ comes from Germany. A Country which is famously known for its “Oktoberfest”. Oktoberfest is the worlds largest volksfest (peoples festival), which is held in Munich, Germany every year running from mid to late September until the first Sunday in October.

When thinking of German food, most people would immediately think sausages as the only thing they have to offer. However, there is so much more to German food and what’s even great, is that they are so easy and simple to replicate. Some traditional German meals often consists of a type of meat or sauerkraut, potatoes as a side dish, and a sauce. In Germany, vegetables are often served in soups, as side dishes and in casseroles. Some common vegetables used in German dishes are spinach, peas, carrots, asparagus, beans, tomatoes, and cucumbers. Vegans can enjoy some of the dishes. The typical German meals includes variations of potatoes, fried, mashed or even boiled, it’s a staple across Germany. Below are the top five German dishes as rated by TriniflavaUK.

BITE SIZED FRIKADELLEN – Delicious deep-fried Beef Mince Patties, served with Schnittlauchbrot, open faced Butter and Chive Sandwiches, beautifully garnished with Caramelised Red Onions.

BRATKARTOFFELN – Potatoes pan fried with Bacon, Onions and garnished with fresh herbs.

SMOKED TROUT WITH DIP – Pretzels, Red sliced Radishes and Daikon Radishes with a variety of fresh crusty bread, including Gluten free.

OBATZDA GERMAN CHEESE DIP – With Spices, Onions, Butter, Camembert Spreadable cheese, and Drunkel Beer.

GERMAN RADISHES WITH MINI MEAT AND CHEESE SKEWERS - steak with cheese and vegetable on a mini skewer with a dipping sauce.

DESSERT

Pineapple Upside Down Cake

INGRIDIENTS

*3/4 cups or 6 oz margarine

*1 cup granulated sugar

*3 eggs

*2 cups flour

*2 tsp. baking powder

*1/2 cup pineapple juice

*1 tsp vanilla

*2 Tbsp melted butter

*1/2 cup brown sugar

*Pinch of salt

*1 cup crushed pineapple or pineapple rings

*6-8 cherries

METHOD

1. Cream butter and sugar until light

2. Add eggs one at a time, beating in well

3. Fold in sifted flour, salt and baking powder, alternating with pineapple juice. Add vanilla.

4. Spread melted butter in 12” pan and sprinkle with sugar

5. Arrange crushed/sliced pineapple and decorate with cherries

6. Pour cake batter over and bake in a preheated oven at 325F for 40-45 minutes or until cake springs back when lightly touched

7. Turn out on a plate or papered cake rack

SEA VIEW

* 2g fresh pineapple

* Cracked black pepper corn

* 15ml Simple syrup

* 50ml Don Julio Blanco(tequila)

* 25ml Lemon Juice

* 10ml Blue Curacao

HOW TO PREPARE SEA VIEW

* Muddle fresh pineapple with 15ml sugar syrup and few cracks of black pepper corn

* Add all ingredients and shake vigorous with solid ice

* Double strain into a chilled cosmopolitan glass

* Garnish with a black peppercorn on pineapple wedge

Amid the turmoil new life begins.

Albert St Clair’s interest in photography started at an early age, focusing on nature photography. He purchased his first professional (film) camera at the age of 19, capturing nature at its best. He subsequently took a break from photography to pursue his other interests, however, his passion for photography ran too deep and he returned to professional photography 15 years ago. Karneval der Kulturen

In this edition of The Spotlight, we spend some time with a very enthusiastic group based in Berlin called Karibbean Kidz. Having experienced Carnival from the motherland (Trinidad) and Berlin Karneval der Kulturen, we learn about the efforts of two amazing individuals.

Meet Ramon and Steffi (pictured above), the founding members of Karibbean Kidz. Ramon is from Trinidad and Tobago living in Germany while Steffi is from Germany, parents to a lovely son. They are supported by two other members from Switzerland, Nelson and Ornella, who have two sons.

Q: Can you tell us about Karibbean Kidz and what is it about?

Karibbean Kidz is a young group interested in

displaying and embracing Caribbean Culture especially through young adults and kids in various outlets.

Q: What was the motivating factor behind it?

Having witnessed the kiddie’s Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago as part of our own culture and living abroad, we wanted to bring this experience and the cultural heritage to Berlin, sharing with others and our kids.

Q: When did it first start?

The idea came up in 2018 after discovering Karneval der Kulturen had a feature for the younger ones. By the following year, we were on the road for the first time.

Q: What was the response like when you first started?

The response was great. All the persons we told about the idea of being part of Karneval der Kulturen, were excited and wanted to be a part of it. On the day of the Carnival, we honestly did not know what to expect. But while on the road getting the kids ready, painting their faces, we could feel the excitement, a natural buzz. Once the music started, everyone started chipping. Both kids and parents were dancing to Soca, Calypso (some hearing it for the first time), Reggae and Zouk – it was just vibes. It was simply amazing seeing the kids enjoying themselves.

The group consisted of many children from different cultural backgrounds, even ones who had never experienced a carnival before.

In our first year we had around 15 children with their parents and we hope to grow.

Q: While on the road for the first time, were there similar bands?

The German Kiddies Carnival is not comparable to Kiddies Carnival in Trinidad or London. It is a small parade in Berlin with different groups participating. There were other bands, for example, a Brazilian drum group, and dancing school, but no other band representing the Caribbean. It was the first time in the history of Berlin Children’s Carnival that a band represented the Caribbean.

Q: Does the Children’s Carnival happen at the same time as adults?

The Children’s Carnival of Cultures was founded in 1996 and has been held annually on the day before the big parade of the “Carnival of Cultures”, always on Whit Saturday in Berlin Kreuzberg.

Q: During the Carnival season, how many events are arranged for the kids and what are they?

Unexpectedly, spectators joined in with their kids and enjoyed the celebrations.

Q: How many members do you currently have?

You cannot really say that we have “members”.

The only events for the kids are on the Carnival Saturday. First there is a parade on the streets that leads to a park. After the parade there is a fest at the park with plenty activities and performances for and from kids.

Q: Outside of the Carnival period, are there activities for the little ones?

For this year’s Carnival the theme was “Coral Reef”. This was a perfect connection to the Caribbean. We planned workshops with the Kiddies Carnival committee where we wanted to display information about the Coral Reef in Tobago. We were in contact with the Bucco Reef Trust in Tobago, to get as much information for the parents and kids. Apart from that, we were in the process of planning a few family days and Caribbean workshops (such as dancing, reading), but unfortunately due to Covid-19 all our projects were halted.

Q: How did the pandemic affect Karibbean Kidz?

All our planned projects for 2020 is on hold, plus the Karneval der Kulture was cancelled this year. Presently, we are looking to prepare for next year, networking and exploring any online options.

Q: What can we expect from Karibbean Kidz in the future?

Since we have been networking, we made some interesting contacts (such as Inside Soca Magazine). We are hoping to build on these relationships to share experiences and grow our initiative. Also, we have some other projects in the planning where families are included, and we can share the heritage of our culture with the younger generation. Hi and welcome back to another edition of Rising Stars (formerly known as Kids of Carnival). As we continued our search for vibrant, young and upcoming stars within the Carnival arena, we struck gold in finding 17-year-old, Kaine Hamilton-Mills, a young and astute pannist. We spent some time trying to keep up with this exciting lad, trying to study his ability on the chromatically pitched percussion instrument, the steel pan.

Q: What school do you currently attend?

I attend East London Arts and Music College (ELAM).

Q: What are your hobbies or extracurricular activities?

I currently record and produce my own music and take part in enrichment activities like artist development.

Q: In your younger days, were you ever interested in music?

I was drawn more to performing in general although Steel Pan has always been a part of my life since both of my parents play pan.

Q: At what age did you start learning to plan pan and where did you learn it?

I first started playing pan with a small band created by my mum and aunt called Creative Unity when I was about seven, but it wasn’t until I was nine that I wanted to take it more seriously and play with a big band for Panorama.

Q: What about that instrument (pan) compared to other instruments, got you interested?

At first it was mainly the fact that it was just always around me and I saw everyone else around me playing but then it became more a thing of pan being so unknown and unique that got me interested.

Q: What type of pan do you play?

I first started on the double guitars in my mums’ band but when I started playing with Metronomes I moved to the bass (6,7,9). I soon started to gain interest in arranging which is when I started playing the double seconds and then the double tenor. Recently, I started getting awfully familiar with the tenor.

Q: Have you performed on stage yet? If so where and what was the occasion?

I have performed with my band Metronomes for panorama every year for the last 6 years. I have also done many other performances with our stage side band at Blockorama street events and at bigger venues such as the Guards Polo Club and the Royal Albert Hall with Kano. Outside of pan I have also done many school and college performances for shows & events.

Q: Was this your first performance?

The earliest pan performance that I can remember was my first Panorama show although I am sure that there were earlier ones that I had done with my mums’ band

Q: What was the feeling like. Talk me through how you felt from the time you arrived through to the end of the performance?

It is hard to put into words. At the end of that first panorama I was just filled with so much adrenaline and excitement. I completely forgot about everything else around me.

Q: Is that something that you learnt whilst learning to play the instrument? Well to be honest most of the information I know on pan was from after our Friday stage side practice when we would hang about with the older people who come to our Pan yard to lime and they would talk about the “old days” and how things used to be.

Q: Do you think it is something that should be taught during pan lessons? and why do you think it is important to know about pan’s history?

I do feel it is important that this information is passed down to the younger generation, not only to avoid the history being forgotten, but also for the younger generation, like myself, to have that deeper appreciation and knowledge for the instrument.

Q: - Are there a lot of young participants? There are quite a few younger players in the pan community, but we are still quite a minority as most young people do not really want to pursue pan further than what they learnt in school. For example, most of the young pan players that I know were born into it or had it around them from a young age and there is hardly any that picked it up from school and wanted to pursue it further.

Q: Do you encourage your friends to learn to play?

Q: Do you know the history of the steelpan?

I do know quite a bit about steelpan’s history, but I am nowhere near an expert on it.

Recently, at college, I have been around people that want to pursue music and have a genuine interest in learning to play the pan. Prior to that, not many people wanted to know more about it. Today, if anyone shows an interest in playing pan, I will advise them to join an outside band, as it is a completely different vibe to learning it at school.

Q: Are there many steelpan events

throughout the year or is it only nearing Carnival time?

During the months of October – November, there is the annual Pan Clash and Pan Explosion. Pan Clash is a soloist competition whereas Pan Explosion is an ensemble competition (a bit like a small Panorama), both events held at the Tabernacle. There are also Blockoramas, that help to showcase the different bands and their repertoires to the public. Also, there is the British Association of Steel Bands awards that celebrate and recognise achievements in the pan community from the previous year.

Q: Where do you see the art form going in the next 10 years?

I think that slowly, it will become more commercialised and popular amongst the people and steel bands will be recognised a lot more.

Q: The future of our West Indian culture and heritage depends on today’s youth. Where do you see yourself fitting in?

I want to incorporate steel pans a lot more with the music that I produce as an artist outside of the pan world to help commercialise it.

Q: Outside of steelpan and culture, what are your ambitions?

I want to become a solo artist/producer. I also would like to own a record label and have my own clothing line.

Q: Finally, what advice would you give to the youngsters today, who are thinking about learning to play pan?

My advice is to research and join a band nearest to you, because it is completely different to learning pan in a school band. It is much more enjoyable as you learn in a more relaxed environment.

To Quarantine or Quarrel: The Spencer’s

Inside Soca Magazine is a primarily UK based magazine and we recognize that it would be insensitive to not acknowledge the global effects of COVID-19. The first city in the United States to experience the effects of this pandemic was of course New York City. COVID-19 is the deadliest of all catastrophic events in New York City’s history; with over 18,000 confirmed deaths. Financially it will also be one of the most expensive epidemics for this great city with a projected loss of revenue approaching $10 billion dollars due to the city’s shutdown over the past four months. Nonetheless, New York City still remains a

unique melting pot; more like a “Pepper Pot” of sorts and is home to many individuals hailing from the Caribbean. We are a people who enjoy closeness in every respect. Generations of family members share tiny and not so tiny spaces in New York City, especially the Borough of Brooklyn as a tradition, matter of circumstance and /or convenience. No matter the reason, sharing a dwelling with more than one individual in New York City is quite common, thus the complexity of forcefully confining yourself at home, practice some form of “Social Distancing “and coexist harmoniously for months is next to impossible.

Inside Soca Magazine gave me an offer I couldn’t refuse; ask my friends and friends of friends how exactly they have been managing with their loved ones at home consistently during the Covid-19 Pandemic. You will soon find out across the pond, there is no normal “normal”.

We Are Family

Imagine a household of working individuals who have grown accustomed to dancing to their own beats now sequestered indefinitely at their residence. This was my own narrative. My 24 year old twin sons who usually left to work each morning; as I returned home from my 12 hr. night shift were now home 24/7 as of March 20th 2020. For the first time ever New York City was put on pause. The shutdown of all “non-essential” businesses left hundreds of thousands jobless at it’s worse and thousands working from home as an alternative at its bestcase scenario.

Smack dead in the middle of the school year educators’, students, para-professionals and all other essential workers in the New York City Public School system were ordered to stay home. Students were given MacBook’s and educators were given instructions on how to log in to their virtual meetings and conduct their classrooms sessions. Unfortunately for many moms like myself, the role of the “Essential Worker” did not end when we arrived home, it resumed straight from work.

You Again??

Veronica Spencer*(names have been changed) is a 49 year old married mother of three living in the Canarsie section of Brooklyn with her spouse Joseph*.Their children range from 13 to 21 .They graciously invited me over to their lovely home one afternoon to offer insight on the dynamic of what we have coined CLTC or “Couple’s Loving Through Covid-19”.

So how is it really?? I asked. Joseph exclaimed “We are like a well-oiled engine!” It didn’t take too much time before Veronica nee Ronnie let

out the longest strrups I’ve heard in a while. “I am so tired. I haven’t seen all of them at once in years. Joseph never feels anything is wrong; I think he wears the same glasses as Ray Charles!” What an icebreaker we all burst into laughter in the kitchen. Ronnie insisted “Don’t get me wrong of course I love them, but never have I had to deal with all of them at the same time for such a long period of time. I’m exhausted.”

Ronnie works five nights a week at a sub-acute rehabilitation center across town as a Registered Nurse. Ronnie continues to speak, “I used to be home by 8:15 am, all by myself during the day; now every minute I have to be fighting for the bathroom, a space to watch TV or even read a book. I feel trapped, I can’t wait till we get back to normal.”

Clearly, I’m biased. I felt her completely. I sat silently and listened keenly for Joseph’s come back and he doesn’t disappoint:

“You would think she would be glad to have all of us home together, ent?” with a slightly proper Trinidadian accent and of course a smile. Ronnie, is more animated and expressive of the two just looked at him and cut her eyes. “He thinks everything is so funny, I ready to rent a room and run from all of them oui!” Ronnie hails from Gouyave, Grenada originally .The couple met in Trinidad as young adults 25 years ago. Joseph migrated to Brooklyn to live with his mother while he attended Baruch College to become an Accountant. Ronnie remained in Trinidad and trained as a Registered Nurse at POS General Hospital. Upon reuniting they were married and briefly lived with Joseph’s mother in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn. Joseph is an Accountant at a major firm in lower Manhattan and now has the luxury of working from home during the NYC shutdown.

“Joseph knows I don’t like to be crowded, remember when we lived with your mother?

That house had every stray living in there. Not my speed.”

“This is the first time in years that the whole family is under one roof for such an extended period of time, I don’t know why she vex?” states Joseph, who upon close inspection is a very attractive man with a charismatic smile. “Joseph Spencer who said I vex??, I am just tired of seeing allyuh!!”

Veronica who is also a very pretty woman, with a low bright red layered haircut, is now looking for that womanly support so she says directly to me, “I am the one cooking, cleaning and still have to work five nights a week!” “I does be in this house by myself by 8:15 every morning. I have a routine, now I feel like my whole life is upside down. First I don’t have a second to myself!”

I’m Not A Teacher By Choice

I could feel the tension building in the kitchen, so I asked about their family dynamic with regards to their children now that all three were currently home.

Joseph explains that Kevin, who is 21 and the eldest is Studying Liberal Arts in college and will be virtually graduating in 2 weeks from SUNY New Paltz, adding that he has been home since mid-March. “Ronnie likes to exaggerate, yes it has been a challenge that schools have closed and now we have to help the two youngest do virtual learning, but I am the one who does help them when she sleeping during the day!” Before I could ask how he was able to accomplish that if he also is working virtually Ronnie interjected, “Joseph Spencer hush yuh ass. Stop trying to look good, is Kevin helping Sean and Deedee every day. I am not a Teacher by choice”. She continues as Joseph sips his tea; “Don’t study Joseph you know, he does be in his office whole day, you see that room down there?” pointing to what looks like an office. “He is there until about 6:30pm every evening, which is quite fine with me!!” Joseph quipped “Ronnie I must do my work, we still have bills and Kevin tuition to pay, l also am not a Teacher by the

way. What do I know about their schoolwork?”

“Sean and Deedee are bright, I hate FaceTime, Zoom and all that kind of ting. Thank God Kevin is home to help us with that.”

Well there’s my answer! Virtual Learning has definitely created some stressors, yes Thank God for Kevin!

Wi Fighting

The Spencer’s have managed to remain financially viable, with both partners working concurrently their income pattern never really changed during the shutdown. Joseph doesn’t commute to Manhattan weekly, therefore they were able to save some money, but that was quickly absorbed into purchasing additional food and toiletries for their well populated residence.

“Those kids can eat!” When I asked Ronnie if their monthly budget changed since Mid-March. She said “Of course our budget changed the only difference these days is that Joseph does not have to buy a monthly MetroCard, but our electricity bill has increased, our Wi-Fi had to be upgraded so that bill increased, and we have been buying more food and toiletries than before because everyone is home.”

Never shy Joseph said: “That is to be expected, everyone is on a MacBook or Laptop, Netflix and Hulu for hours a day.” “I don’t mind the extra expenses honestly, as long as they are home and safe.”

Ronnie shakes her head with agreement “God is good and has kept us safe in our home.”

At last these two shared a common theme for once, I thought to myself.

A Deputy “Essential”!

Well because the theme of this piece is to really aim at discussing couples dealing with the COVID-19 Pandemic at home; I had to ask that question.

Me: “When was the last time you guys had a moment together you know what I mean wink, wink”

Ronnie: “Oh please you really want to know?”

“Look how long Joseph have he woman?” all while smiling. Joseph clearly is not. Ronnie however, is in rare form now and continues to taunt Joseph. “…But see now he is literally stuck with me. First he can’t stop bothering me every night before I go to work like he haunted!” “Joseph doesn’t know what name SOCIAL DISTANCING!”

We all start laughing hysterically, I felt so ashamed for Joseph, but he took it like a champ. Joseph: “Veronica why you so eh?” Shaking his head. What woman you talking about? Yuh like s*it.”

Ronnie: “You know and I know the truth. I fine you want me to open my mouth; first I don’t have no filter Joseph Spencer!” Now she completely turns to me and is giving me de tea. “Before this Corona crisis, for the past year he could never be found from Friday night until Saturday afternoon. Now he’s forced to know he has a wife named Veronica after 25 years?” and with that Ronnie spins around to say directly to Joseph “Haul yuh ass!!”

As a good reporter should, I asked the question, “are you implying that Joseph was cheating on you last year??”

I could see Joseph wanted to just die in his kitchen! Ronnie was unrelenting and still in his face “I am not that young girl from the country anymore, watch me good; you better thank God for this Quarantine Time to get your act together.”

A very bruised Joseph never addressed her accusations, but offered her this reassurance: “Is 25 years we rolling, I am not perfect by any means. When you go to work every night, I can’t sleep. I never know if my wife is going to get corona and die. You fine I have time to study anyone outside?”

I guess the kids heard Ronnie raising her voice and became curious. We could hear them walking out their rooms and down the stairs. Sean, Deedee and Kevin entered the kitchen in that order, each with a flag mask on their face. Noticeably, Kevin was wearing a Grenadian Flag mask, like a true mother’s boy while the other kids wore Trini Flag masks. I wish I had taken a picture of them!

It was at that moment I think Joseph and Ronnie realized how lucky they truly were. Sean the youngest looked at Veronica and said “Mommy I’m hungry, you like my new mask?? Daddy has one too!” “Of course he does.” As she smiled and shook her head. “Like yuh jealous Veronica, look Kevin wearing your flag!” Everyone started laughing.

I am happy to report, gratefully that I think the Spencer’s can weather this “storm” and emerge stronger than ever before. Sometimes God has a way of mending and patching things that most of us would easily discard for a new replacement. Covid-19 has impacted all of us, in this case it brought the Spencer’s back together, hopefully for good.
