Dance

Tap, Tap and

T

ap dancing is a traditional dance that can be made contemporary by using popular music and more modern steps. It is a fun thing to do by yourself or to learn with a partner. A great cardiovascular workout and great way to keep in shape, tapping might be the perfect exercise option for you. Tap dance is a performance art that requires stamina, muscle strength and energy and incorporates full-body movement, but focuses mainly on the major muscles of the legs. You can burn a significant amount of calories from tap dancing.

Health Benefits

According to the Better Health Channel, tap dancing increases cardiovascular endurance, coordination, flexibility, agility and stability. Exercises, like tap dance, that elevate the heart rate to between 60 and 85 percent of your target heart rate may reduce your risk of heart disease and some cancers.

Fun Exercise

If you want an exercise that will keep you in shape and that is good for your heart as 10 insight

well, consider tap dancing. The beauty of tap dancing is that the basic steps are easy to learn and you can add your own flair and touches to make it fun for you. Just 20 minutes of tap dancing three times per week is enough to improve your health and get you back into shape.

Get Started

The first thing that you need for tap dancing is, of course, tap shoes. You can find tap shoes online or at a local dance store. Tap shoes have metal on the toes and heels that make a “tapping sound whenever you stomp on them. You can also make your own tap shoes. You can basically use any shoe that you want to use from a dance shoe to boots. Once you have chosen your shoe, you can buy taps and put them on the bottom of your shoe. Before you put your taps in place permanently, make sure that they are on the correct place on your shoe as shoes have different soles and shapes. You can learn tap dancing by taking a class. Tap classes are available for all ages from toddlers to senior citizens. There are different types of classes as well. Some use jazz,

others use big band type music and one of the most popular tap classes around now uses tapping with hip hop music. The more a class is geared towards the type of music and exercise you want, the more likely you will continue. You need to use a solid surface for tap dancing. Taps can scratch hard wood floors, so you might want to purchase a solid surface to use when tapping. You can actually purchase hard mats for practicing your tap. The more you use your arms, the better the cardiovascular workout. Be sure to do slow tapping at the beginning of your workout to warm-up and slow tapping at the end to cool down. The best way to strain muscles and injure yourself is to jump right into tapping without stretching or warming up. Tapping is excellent for coordination and balance as well. You can learn to tap on one foot or tap your feet alternately with your hands. Weight management - bones and reduced risk of osteoporosis coordination, agility and flexibility balance and spatial awareness physical confidence mental functioning general and psychological wellbeing selfconfidence and self-esteem social skills.

Get in SHAPE BY THE End OF THE

Year

L

osing fat in the belly requires decreasing your total body-fat percentage. Increase your activity levels and eat healthfully to experience a one to two lb. weight loss in one week. If you are looking for a quick way to flatten your tummy, take a close look at your kitchen. The kitchen can hide foods that are sabotaging your efforts, such as processed foods that are high in fat, sugar and sodium. Make a few healthy changes in your eating and get moving for a flatter stomach in just a few days.

STEP 1

Perform high-intensity interval training every other day. Jog on the treadmill for one minute and walk for one minute. Repeat for 30 minutes.

STEP 2

Eat more fiber. Consume high-fiber foods such as whole grains, oatmeal, fruits, vegetables and fiber-rich cereal. Fiber slows the flow of fat into your bloodstream, providing you with a steady stream of energy and making it less likely that you’ll overeat. Highfiber foods are less energy-dense, which

12 insight

means you can eat the same volume of food and still cut calories. Daily recommendations are 38g of fiber for adult men and 25g of fiber for adult women. In general, the more fiber you eat, the better.

STEP 3

Drink one gallon of water per day. Drinking water decreases bloating caused by dehydration, keeps you fuller longer and cuts calories. Replace sugar-loaded beverages, which contain about 200 calories per can, with water.

STEP 4

Decrease your stress level. Stress increases cortisol production, which is a major cause of weight gain in the belly area. Reduce cortisol levels naturally through adequate rest, meditation and avoiding stimulants.

STEP 5

Drink Green tea. A study found that people who drank one and a half cups of green tea enriched with a total of 609 milligrams of catechins (a group of antioxidants that have been shown to help burn fat cells) every day for 12 weeks lost almost 16 times as

much visceral fat as those who consumed green tea without the added antioxidants. To achieve similar results with store-bought green tea, you’ll need to brew two to four cups daily (many varieties can contain 160 to 470 milligrams of catechins per cup).

STEP 6

To cleanse your system, consider Fat Flush Water. Besides its main ingredient of water, the Fat Flush contains grapefruit that’s loaded with vitamin C to help your body turn fat into fuel. The tangerine increases your sensitivity to insulin, stabilizes blood sugar, and stimulates genes to burn fat. Cucumber helps you feel full and acts as a natural diuretic, which means less bloating and water retention. And lastly, it has peppermint, which is not only refreshing but also promotes better digestion and stomach calm. Make a big pitcher of Fat Flush Water every morning. The longer it sits, the better it will taste. Drink at least an eight ounce glass three times a day before each meal for 10 days straight.

For Less Wrinkles

1

If you are considering botox or fillers before Christmas, this is the best time to have them, as you may need at least a one-week healing period after these treatments. As a rejuvenating treatment, we recommend mesotherapy. This involves several small injections to the face that contain a cocktail of youth-boosting vitamins and plumping hyaluronic acid to improve the quality of the skin. The effects can be seen after one treatment, but have a couple of sessions two to three weeks apart for best results.

2

For a Shiny, Healthy Hair

The most important things to focus on are detoxifying and nourishing the hair. You can do an at-home treatment by mixing a quarter of a tablespoon of vitamin C powder, the same amount of cider vinegar and half a cup of hot water to freshly washed hair for a deep cleanse. You can also deep condition your hair at home with a detox. When applying a hair mask at home, gently warm a hand towel in the microwave and wrap it around the hair for 20 minutes — the heat intensifies the treatment, helping it last around three weeks. If you are going to try an up-do over the party season, start practising a week before and go through ‘dry runs’ to figure out how long it will take and to avoid any pitfalls.

flash... Beauty

Your Holidays Season Beauty Regime With a month to go before Christmas, there is still time to make sure you look and feel fabulous this festive season. The main thing is to avoid lastminute panics when, quite frankly, we all have enough to do...

3

For a Smoother Décolletage

The skin on your décolletage is really delicate, so be gentle with it. You don’t need special products for that area; use the same ones you use on your face. Cleanse, tone and moisturise your face twice a day and include your neck and chest. Using facial toner on the area really helps tighten the skin. Always apply plenty of moisturiser with an SPF during the day — even in the winter months. Before bedtime, substitute facial oil for moisturiser, which will hydrate more deeply. Skin in this area is too sensitive for exfoliation, but to make skin look plumper and more radiant, apply a firming mask twice a week. Don’t apply foundation to the area — it will simply sit in the grooves, which can be ageing. Instead, try using an illuminator mixed in with your day cream. It gives the impression of more radiant skin.

20 insight

4

For a Radiant, Glowing Skin

Facial massage every other day is unbeatable for getting an instant glow. Use your knuckles (held in loose fists) and fingertips to roll, knead and drum life back into your skin. These movements stimulate lymphatic drainage on puffy complexions and boost the vital supply of oxygen and nutrients to the skin. Massage used in combination with your skincare products increase their performance. Once a week, try a mask to brighten, clarify and lift skin. Layering a serum underneath a facemask packs an added punch. You can make your own nourishing mask using a mixture of honey, a dash of olive oil and natural yogurt or avocado. Or mix together some yogurt and large oatmeal flakes for an exfoliating at home peel. For a cooling, de-puffing and revitalising treatment straight from your kitchen, pour a small amount of water into a balloon, leave in your freezer and simply wrap in a cloth and roll all over the face before you apply your make-up. It ends up looking like a giant icecube sausage. This mini treatment will de-puff and bring an instant rosy glow.

The “true love” mentioned in the song “Twelve Days of Christmas” does not refer to a romantic couple, but the Catholic Church’s code for God. The person who receives the gifts represents someone who has accepted that code. For example, the “partridge in a pear tree” represents Christ. The “two turtledoves” represent the Old and New Testaments.

Most of Santa’s reindeer have malesounding names, such as Blitzen, Comet, and Cupid. However, male reindeers shed their antlers around Christmas, so the reindeer pulling Santa’s sleigh are likely not male, but female or castrati.

In A.D. 350, Pope Julius I, bishop of Rome, proclaimed December 25 the official celebration date for the birthday of Christ.

8

According to the Guinness world records, the tallest Christmas tree ever cut was a 221-foot Douglas fir that was displayed in 1950 at the Northgate Shopping Center in Seattle, Washington.

9

The traditional three colors of Christmas are green, red, and gold. Green has long been a symbol of life and rebirth; red symbolizes the blood of Christ, and gold represents light as well as wealth and royalty. Two weeks before Christmas is a popular time for couples to break up.

Contrary to popular belief, suicide rates during the Christmas holiday are low. The highest rates are during the spring.

The world’s largest Christmas stocking measured 106 feet and 9 inches (32.56 m) long and 49 feet and 1 inch (14.97 m) wide. It weighed as much as five reindeer and held almost 1,000 presents. It was made by the Children’s Society in London on December 14, 2007.

Christmas trees usually grow for about 15 years before they are sold.

Many European countries believed that spirits, both good and evil, were active during the Twelve Days of Christmas. These spirits eventually evolved into Santa’s elves, especially under the influence of Clement C. Moore’s The Night Before Christmas (1779-1863) illustrated by Thomas Nast (1840-1902).

Alabama was the first state in the United States to officially recognize Christmas in 1836.

Christmas wasn’t declared an official holiday in the United States until June 26, 1870.

22 23

Oklahoma was the last U.S. state to declare Christmas a legal holiday, in 1907.

Mistletoe (Viscum album) is from the AngloSaxon word misteltan, which means “little dung twig” because the plant spreads though bird droppings.

24

Ancient people, such as the Druids, considered mistletoe sacred because it remains green and bears fruit during the winter when all other plants appear to die. Druids would cut the plant with golden sickles and never let it touch the ground. They thought it had the power to cure infertility and nervous diseases and to ward off evil.

25

Evergreens (from the Old English word aefie meaning “always” and gowan meaning “to grow”) have been symbols of eternal life and rebirth since ancient times. The pagan use and worship of evergreen boughs and trees has evolved into the Christianized Christmas tree.

26

Because they viewed Christmas as a decadent Catholic holiday, the Puritans in America banned all Christmas celebrations from 1659-1681 with a penalty of five shillings for each offense. Some Puritan leaders condemned those who favored Christmas as enemies of the Christian religion.

27

A Yule log is an enormous log that is typically burned during the Twelve Days of Christmas (December 25-January 6). Some scholars suggest that the word yule means “revolution” or “wheel,” which symbolizes the cyclical return of the sun. A burning log or its charred remains is said to offer health, fertility, and luck as well as the ability to ward off evil spirits.

28

Because of their pagan associations, both the holly (associated with the masculine principle) and the ivy (the feminine) and other green boughs in home decoration were banned by the sixth-century Christian Council of Braga.

29

The poinsettia is native to Mexico and was cultivated by the Aztecs, who called the plant Cuetlaxochitl (“flower which wilts”). For

the Aztecs, the plant’s brilliant red color symbolized purity, and they often used it medicinally to reduce fever.

30

Christmas has its roots in pagan festivals such as Saturnalia (December 17-December 23), the Kalends (January 1 -5, the precursor to the Twelve Days of Christmas), and Deus Sol Invictus or Birthday of the Unconquerable Sun (December 25). The Christian church heartily disapproved of such celebrations and co-opted the pagans by declaring December 25 as Christ’s day of birth, though there is no evidence Christ was born on that day.

31

Santa Claus is based on a real person, St. Nikolas of Myra (also known as Nikolaos the Wonderworker, Bishop Saint Nicholas of Smyrna, and Nikolaos of Bari), who lived during the fourth century. Born in Patara (in modern-day Turkey), he is the world’s most popular non-Biblical saint, and artists have portrayed him more often than any other saint except Mary. He is the patron saint of banking, pawnbroking, pirating, butchery, sailing, thievery, orphans, royalty, and New York City.

32

Early illustrations of St. Nicholas depict him as stern, commanding, and holding a birch rod. He was more a symbol of discipline and punishment than the jolly, overweight elf children know today.

33

Puritan Oliver Cromwell outlawed Christmas celebrations and carols in England from 1649-1660. The only celebrations allowed were sermons and prayers.

34 35

Wassail is from the Old Norse ves heill, meaning “good health.”

Christmas stockings allegedly evolved from three sisters who were too poor to afford a marriage dowry and were, therefore, doomed to a life of prostitution. They were saved, however, when the wealthy Bishop Saint Nicholas of Smyrna (the precursor to Santa Claus) crept down their chimney and generously filled their stockings with gold coins.

2014

Home decor trends change from year to year. There are even seasonal variations intended to keep your home decor from becoming boring. Holiday decorations can provide a dramatic and exciting change to your home decor. Christmas decorations can also bring in an element of serenity and tranquility that may be absent during other parts of the year. The following Christmas decorating ideas will give you some insight as to what the new trends include so that you can begin planning your holiday decor.

Shimmer and Shine

One of the 2014 home decor trends involve the inclusion of metallic accessories in your room designs. Including lots of gold and silver in your holiday decorations is going to be a popular trend. Think large scale items such as over-sized gold bows and ribbons on the tree, not just tiny shiny holiday ornaments. This is a great time to add some vintage goldframed mirrors to a room. Mirrors can be hung on the wall or placed on a table as the base for a holiday display.

Tranquil Christmas Themes

A white tree with turquoise, pale blue, light green or any other pastel color decorations is a trendy way to add tranquility to your home during the holiday season. To successfully achieve serenity, you’ll need to be conservative in the amount of decorations you put in a room. Less is best when creating a serene atmosphere.

Exciting and Bold

This is the year to let your creativity be displayed through your Christmas decorating ideas. Purple, bright pink, rich turquoise, brilliant red and emerald green are ideal colors to base your 2014 Christmas decorations on. Gold, silver and various other deep, rich colors with

a metallic finish combine beautifully with dark shades of purple and turquoise.

Touch of Bling

This was a strong new trend for 2014. Rhinestone style decorations in silver, champagne and even more ‘on trend’ colours such as yellow. Christmas has always had a bit of bling but this has taken it to a new level.

Vintage Re-purposed Decorations

Vintage decorative accessories have made their way into modern and contemporary decors. The same can be done with holiday decorations. Vintage ornaments can attractively be incorporated into an modern home decor. Re-purposing items from the past is among the most popular 2014 holiday decorating themes.

Textures

Home decor trends for 2014 involve the use of textures to create visual interest in a room. For the holidays, you can apply that trend by using faux fur in your holiday to create some beautiful Christmas displays. The use of natural elements such as sisal and burlap blend well with woodland holiday decor themes which are very popular.

HOSTING A CHRISTMAS

PARTY? 9

CHRISTMAS

PARTY THEMES

You Haven’t Thought of Yet This holiday season, try one of these festive ideas to set your fete apart.

TRIM MY TREE GATHERING

Putting up your first Christmas tree as a bona-fide grown-up (helping Mom and Dad put the family tree of your kindergarten-crafted thing-a-ma-bobs hanging from it doesn’t count) is a momentous occasion. Why not have a tree-trimming ribbon-cutting, of sorts? Just set up your mini-evergreen (real or fake!) with lights and garland, and have your guests each bring an ornament to hang on your tree. To get extra-hokey, put everyone on the spot and make them tell a story about the ornament they chose. When the last one is hung, you do the honors of adding the tree topper and plugging in the lights!

THE UGLY SWEATER PARTY 32 insight

If you managed to go this long in life without acquiring some horrific Christmas sweater you know, the ones with the puff paint snowmen and the mistletoe-patterned mock turtlenecks from your great aunt Mildred, then you may have to run to the nearest Mall to purchase one for this party of holiday fashion faux pas. We promise they don’t cost much, and the photos will most definitely be priceless.

THE WRAP PARTY

Wrapping gifts may be the single most frustrating activity of the season. Not only do you inflict paper cuts and nervous breakdowns (from inaccurately cutting the paper too small), but you inevitably watch the recipient of your wrapped masterpiece brutally tear it to shreds without a second thought. Throw a support-group style gathering for friends where everyone brings some basic supplies and their bundle of gifts to wrap together. You’ll be surprised who knows how to help you tie that bow to not look like it was crafted by a fifth-grader. For added synergy, turn up the rap music.

REVERSE CHRISTMAS IN JULY Christmas in July is a time-honored mid-summer party favorite. In the summer’s hottest month, people pretend it’s Christmas complete with a tree, gift exchange, and hearty meal. Well, turn the tables on this tradition with a beach-themed romp in the dead of winter. Beach balls, mojitos, everyone’s favorite Christmas with the Beach Boys album, and ample sunscreen are a must. Bikinis considering this happens to be one of the all-time worst months for six-packs are clearly optional.

HOLIDAY MOVIE MARATHON THE CHRISTMAS COOKIE SWAP

Nothing says the holidays like binge-eating homemade cookies in the shapes of Christmas trees and gingerbread men. To make sure you get a variety of sugary goodness this year, host a cookie swap where everyone brings a batch of their homemade specialty, from fudge brownies to cinnamon snickerdoodles, to share. For a fun twist, allow those friends who are baking beginners to bring store-bought cookies and have guests try to guess which ones are “legit.”

CHRISTMAS CAROL KARAOKE NIGHT You may not be a fan of unsolicited carolers banging on your door at night, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t enjoy an opportunity to bust out Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You.” Either hit up a karaoke bar with private singing rooms or invest in a home karaoke set, and rock out to the holiday’s best jams. Like the movie marathon, a complete Christmas playlist may take all night, so consider sticking to a theme. Classics are fun for the whole family, but sticking with pop reinterpretations by the tragically disbanded N Sync and just about every American Idol winner will help you stay on track.

CHRISTMAS COSTUME PUB CRAWL

Halloween isn’t the only holiday tailor-made for dress-up. Hit up a costume store and buy a Santa suit (or sexy Santa suit, if you must) or an elf ensemble, and hit up a bar with some similarly dressed pals. In fact, dozens of cities across the country actually have organized “Santacon” events in which hundreds of people spend the day bouncing from bar to bar in their white beards and red hats. To ensure proper participation, award the best dressed Kris Kringle and Mrs. Claus with a free round on you.

From It’s a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street to Elf, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, and this generation’s classic A Christmas Story, it’ll be hard to pick which flicks have a place in your holiday film fest. Just keep it to less than five to avoid merry movie fatigue. And, if just watching hours of movies isn’t exciting enough for you or your couch guests, add some action with a drinking game. Take a shot whenever someone says “Christmas spirit” or whenever anyone in Santa garb is on screen.

12 DAYS OF APPETIZERS PARTY

A dieter’s worst nightmare may very well be the holiday party. Why? With buffet lines filled with bite-sized morsels of calorie-laden treats, they are the easiest way to make you join a gym come January. But, hell. If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. Like the cookie swap, invite your guests to bring their favorite appetizer to share. If, however, the impending sodium counts really have you shaking in your winter boots, ask people to bring healthy options instead.

The stars never do something for no reason, which means that some of your actions may be a first link in a powerful chain of events, the outcome of which will be defined strictly by you.

Positive events will change each other with such speed that you can definitely leave some without attention. Yet this will probably be the only problem you will have! Do not doubt anything else, success is guaranteed for you.

Protect your back; do not leave ambiguities – especially in your relationships with your lover. If something, then give in and soon people will give in to you.

Around The World All over the world, Christmas celebrations reflect local culture and traditions. The festivities can be startlingly different from country to country, focusing on different aspects of the nativity story. But whether one’s celebrating Sheng Dan Jieh in China or awaing Pere Noel in France, one’s sharing in the wonder and magic of the Christmas season. Let’s take a look at Christmas traditions in countries around the world, from Sweden to Australia, England and China.

44 insight

CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS IN AUSTRALIA In Australia, December 25 falls during summer vacation, so many of the country’s Christmas festivities take place outdoors. The most popular event of the Christmas season is called Carols by Candlelight. People come together at night to light candles and sing Christmas carols outside. The stars shining above add to the sights and sounds of this wonderful outdoor concert.

CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS IN CHINA

The small number of Christians in China call Christmas Sheng Dan Jieh, which means Holy Birth Festival. They decorate their homes with evergreens, posters, and bright paper chains. Families put up a Christmas tree, called ‘A Tree of Light’, and decorate it with beautiful lanterns, flowers, and red paper chains that symbolize happiness. They cut out red pagodas to paste on the windows, and they light their houses with paper lanterns, too.

CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS IN ENGLAND

It is cold, wet, and foggy in England during Christmas time. The day before Christmas is very busy for families in England. They wrap presents, bake cookies, and hang stockings over the fireplace. Then everyone gathers around the tree as someone tells a classic holiday story, ‘A Christmas Carol.’ Children write a letter to Father Christmas with their wishes and toss their letters into the fire so their wishes can go up the chimney. After the children fall asleep on Christmas Eve, Father Christmas comes to visit.

CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS IN ETHIOPIA

Ethiopia follows the ancient Julian calendar, so Ethiopians celebrate Christmas on January 7. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church’s celebration of Christ’s birth is called Ganna. It is a day when families attend church. Everyone dresses in white. Most Ethiopians do a traditional shamma -- a thin, white cotton wrap with brightly colored stripes across the ends. Twelve days after Ganna, on January 19, Ethiopians begin the three-day celebration called Timkat, which commemorates the baptism of Christ.

CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS IN FRANCE

Christmas celebrations in France begin on December 5, which is St. Nicholas Eve, but Christmas Eve is the most special time in the French celebration of Christmas. Church bells ring and voices sing French carols, called noels. On Christmas Day, families go to church and then enjoy an abundant feast of wonderful dishes, ending with the traditional Buche de Noel, a rich buttercream-filled cake shaped and frosted to look like a Yule log.

CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS IN GERMANY

German families prepare for Christmas throughout cold December. Four Sundays before Christmas, they make an Advent wreath of fir or pine branches that has four colored candles. They light a candle on the wreath each Sunday, sing Christmas songs, and eat Christmas cookies. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, homes are filled with the delightful smells of baking loaves of sweet bread, cakes filled with candied fruits, and spicy cookies called lebkuchen.

CHRISTMAS TRADTIONS IN HOLLAND

Dutch children in Holland, or the Netherlands, eagerly await the arrival of Sinterklaas on St. Nicholas Day on December 6. Sinterklaas is a kindly bishop. He wears red robes and a tall, pointed mitre on his head. Sinterklaas travels by ship from Spain to Amsterdam’s harbor every winter. He brings his white horse and a huge sack full of gifts for the children. Families celebrate St. Nicholas Eve at home with lots of good food, hot chocolate, and a letterbanket, a ‘letter cake’ made in the shape of the first letter of the family’s last name.

CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS IN ITALY

The Christmas season in Italy begins on the first Sunday of Advent, which is four Sundays before Christmas. Christmas fairs feature fireworks and bonfires along with holiday music. Families go to the Christmas markets to shop for gifts and new figures for the

manger scene. Some families set up a Christmas tree and decorate it. Families set up their presepio, or manger scene, on the first day of the novena. They gather before the presepio each morning or evening of novena to light candles and pray.

CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS IN MEXICO

The weather is warm and mild in Mexico during the Christmas season. Families shop for gifts, ornaments, and good things to eat in the market stalls, called puestos. They decorate their homes with lilies and evergreens. Family members cut intricate designs in brown paper bags to make lanterns, or farolitos. They place a candle inside and then set the farolitos along sidewalks, on windowsills, and on rooftops and outdoor walls to illuminate the community with the spirit of Christmas.

CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS IN SPAIN

The Christmas season begins in Spain on December 8, with a week long observance of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Evergreens decorate the churches and outdoor markets throughout the Christmas season. Tambourines, gourd rattles, castanets, and miniature guitars are offered for sale to enliven the singing and dancing in the streets. Children go from house to house reciting verses or singing carols for sweets, toys, or small instruments.

CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS IN SWEDEN In Sweden, the Christmas festivities begin on December 13 with St. Lucia’s Day, which celebrates the patron saint of light. The eldest daughter gets up before dawn and dresses as the ‘Queen of Light’ in a long white dress. She wears a crown of leaves. Singing ‘Santa Lucia,’ the Lucia Queen goes to every bedroom to serve coffee and treats to each member of the family. The younger children in the family help too. The whole family helps to select the Christmas tree just a day or two before Christmas.

What2014 46 insight

ow 2014 is packing ready to leave us, and N so we will talk about what it has brought upon us and what it takes away with it. By Nada S. Shahin

Ebola Virus

The most widespread epidemic of Ebola virus disease in history is currently ongoing in several West African countries. It has caused significant mortality, with a reported case fatality rate of about 71%. The WHO (World Health Organiation) said, “The Ebola epidemic ravaging parts of West Africa is the most severe acute public health emergency seen in modern times. Never before in recorded history has a biosafety level four pathogen infected so many people so quickly, over such a broad geographical area, for so long.” There are a total of 14,098 suspected cases and 5,489 deaths reported, though the WHO believes that true figures are three times more.

Terrorist Attacks

Thank God no Ebola cases were reported in Egypt so far, but there was something else killing Egyptians, especially soldiers on borders; terrorist attacks. The army called the incidents, “Continued terrorist attempts to target the nation and hinder its path to stability and development”. May those soldiers rest in peace, may God provide their families with strength.

Isis

Speaking about terrorists, just when you thought it couldn’t get worse, a terrorist organization evolved, not exactly out of the blue! But it was founded in 1999 under the name of ‘The Organization of Monotheism and Jihad’, but chose this year to become hyperactive under the name of ‘The “Islamic” State of Iraq and Syria’ (ISIS). I am not sure which part about them is Islamic because all their actions are barbaric, especially after they publicly, proudly and inhumanely beheaded the American journalist, James Foley. ISIS proclaimed a worldwide caliphate on 29 June, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi—known by his supporters as Amir al-Mu’minin, was named its caliph, and the group was renamed the Islamic State and it claims religious authority over all Muslims worldwide. So, not just barbaric but also mad, a whole new level of insanity.

Gaza-Israel Conflict

Another heart-breaking memory 2014 leaves us with is the Gaza-Israel conflict, I know it has been there since forever but this year on 8 July, Israel launched Operation Protective Edge in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip. It started when Hamas kidnapped and murdered 3 Israeli teenagers and then seven

Hamas militants died in a tunnel explosion in Khan Yunis which was caused by an Israeli airstrike (per Hamas) or an accidental explosion of their own munitions (per the IDF), after which Hamas assumed responsibility for missiles fired from Gaza and launched 40 rockets towards Israel. After seven weeks of Israeli bombardment, Hamas rocket attacks and ground fighting, more than 2,200 people were killed, the vast majority of them Gazans included 513 children.

Time to Say Goodbye

2014 will leave and take away with it many celebrities. From Egypt it takes away actors like Khaled Saleh, Khalil Morsy, the multitalented Hussein El-Imam, the great Saeed Saleh, Maali Zaied and the legendary Mariam Fakhr-Eldeen. Also cartoonist and journalist Mustafa Hussein; the former professional wrestler, Mamdouh Farag; and former Zamalek football player, Captain Taha Basry. Apart from Egypt, the great actor and comedian Robin Williams, the Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jurassic Park’s award winning Richard Attenborough, the world’s most iconic child star Shirley Temple, legendary Ruby Dee, Ellie Wallach and legendary folk singer Pete Seeger, legendary comedians including Joan Rivers, Harold Ramis and David Brenner, WWE’s Hall of Famer The Ultimate Warrior; all leave with 2014.

new constitution was held on 14 and 15 January 2014, with Egyptians abroad voting between 8 and 12 January. The new constitution was approved by 98.1% of voters among a 38.6% turnout. Following the new constitution, a presidential election took place between 26 and 28 May 2014. There were only two candidates, former Egyptian Defense Minister Abdel Fattah elSisi and Egyptian Popular Current candidate Hamdeen Sabahi, with el-Sisi winning with 23.78 million votes, 96.91% . Another good thing 2014 had for Egypt was the New Suez Canal. It’s a waterway project expanding the existing Suez Canal between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. The chairman of the Suez Canal authority announced that the revenues from the Suez Canal (after the completion of the New Suez Canal) will jump from 5 billion dollars to 12.5 billion dollars annually. The project costs around 60 billion Egyptian pounds. President el-Sisi refused to allow foreign investors to invest in the project, but rather urged Egyptians citizens to contribute by buying shares with 12% interest rates and dividend. After President el-Sisi announced the new megaproject, Egypt’s stocks rose to the highest level in the past six years.

Olympic Games

The major sports event that took place at the beginning of 2014 is the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia. The Games were held from 7–23 February, with opening rounds in certain events held on the eve of the opening ceremony. A total of 98 events in 15 winter sport disciplines were held during the games. them.

First of all congratulations on ‘Aljazeera 2’, how did it feel like to reprise your role as Karima? I am more than happy; Karima is one of the closest characters to my heart. The entire crew is amazing; we spent great times on set and the whole experience was perfect and that’s why I love Karima so much.

Karima’s character witnessed a lot of changes from ‘Aljazeera 1’, how did you pull this through? The evolution and developments that happened to the character are natural. First I was surprised by the character development in the second part, but after reading the incidents and motives that occurred between the two parts, I found that the character had to undergo such evolution. So with the help of the screenwriters and the director we drew the outlines for the character and I studied every single detail about her, especially the sensations associated with the character in every scene in the film.

Do you think there is still one more chapter to be told, in a third sequal? I don’t know yet, of course we are all open for a third part of the movie if we are given the opportunity. All characters in this movie can evolve and there are a lot of details that can allow the screenwriters to create a new story for a new film.

Which of your other roles, do you wish to reprise again and why? A lot! I am thrilled with all the roles I did, even those that didn’t succeed or didn’t

What’s your take on all the criticism you faced because of your latest posts on social media? I am used to these things! I don’t give criticism any attention as long as I didn’t offend anyone and vise versa. turn out like I expected. Reprising a certain character requires new outlines and history that can be presented in a new story.

What changed in your choices from your first role in ‘Samt Alkosoor’ till today? A lot! It has been a long journey and when I look back, I find that I’ve presented a variety of different roles and worked with a lot of stars. Everyday I learn new things and I am always learning from every director and actor I work with. Now I try to choose the kind of roles that can add to me, the kind of roles that will push me forward and present me to the audience in a different way. I dream to access new unprecedented levels in acting.

Do you have any role that you regret playing for one reason or the other? On the contrary! Even if I didn’t enjoy playing a role and even if the movie didn’t succeed commercially, the whole experience taught me something new and I never regret doing anything that I learn from.

Unlike other fellow stars, motherhood didn’t steal you from acting, how do you reach this balance? I try to work upon a schedule to balance between work and taking care of my daughters; I also try to dedicate all my free time to

In your opinion, what’s the reason for some of the unjustified attacks that celebrities face those days? Artists and public figures must accept paying the tax of fame, including unprovoked attacks or anything else, but one should not give much attention to such things. We should respond to this unjustified criticism quietly and calmly.

What are your coming projects? I am preparing for a new project with Tunisian director Reda Albahy and we’ll start shooting in Tunisia soon.

After years of success and huge achievements, what else do you aim to reach? I believe that I didn’t accomplish much and there is still more that I aim to achieve. I plan to present more roles that can fortify my name in Egypt and the Arab world.

Do you thing that ‘Embratoriet Meen’ achieved the success it deserves? I received a lot of amazing feedback once the series was aired. We really worked hard on this project which discusses problems we experience on daily bases on Egypt’s streets. I think when ‘Embratoriet Meen’ aired for the second time it achieved more viewership than during Ramadan.

1. HOW DID YOUR JOURNEY IN THIS BUSINESS BEGIN?

I have been in love with acting since I was a little kid and used to perform in school plays. I intended to become a professional actress so I studied theatre at the faculty of Arts. After graduation, I started doing advertisements and at the same time I was monitoring castings held for TV series and movies. The first role I’ve ever played was in a series called ‘Kelmet Hak’ with Mervat Amin and the same year I did another series called ‘Tayara Warak’. The next year I did ‘Karima Karima’ for which I was granted an award as best rising actress for my role.

2. WHICH ROLE HAVE YOU PERFORMED IS CLOSEST TO YOUR HEART AND WHY? I don’t think I’ve done it yet. I love all my roles, and I really enjoyed my roles in ‘Karima Karima’ and ‘Helm Aziz’ even though I am not a comedian. Yes, I love making comedies, yet I don’t want to be labelled a comedian. I want to be remembered for a variety of different roles.

3. YOU ARE CONSTANTLY COMPARED TO LEGENDARY NELLY, DOES THAT PRESSURE YOU? Nelly is a beautiful artist and it pleases me a lot when someone tells me I look like her. But I think my personality is very different from hers and that’s why I am not worried from the comparison. She has a great sense of humour and is a talented dancer, singer, and actor. If I could do half the things she can do, I would be really be blessed.

4. YOU ARE ONE OF THE MOST PROMINENT FACES ON THE SILVER SCREEN TODAY, YET YOUR CHOICES ARE LIMITED, WHY?

I am very grateful for all the things I did, but I prefer not to over expose my presence because many of the roles I am offered do not suit me, either because of the nature of the role or because I don’t feel I identify with the character and sometimes because I am not comfortable working with the crew. I want to enjoy the roles I am doing. I love acting, I don’t want to just do a role for the sake of it or for the sake of appearance, I want to make something I am content and

happy doing. Unfortunately, I don’t get many offers to do the roles I’m waiting for and work with the people I like.

5. ON WHAT BASIS DO YOU CHOOSE YOUR ROLES?

First I read the script of course, I try not to repeat myself and only pick new roles that will add to me. It’s also very important for

me to enjoy the role I am doing. At the end it’s a package, because even if the scenario is well written and the role is interesting the work won’t be complete without a talented director who has a good vision. I am still at the beginning of my career and I need to work with professionals who can guide me and teach me through their experiences. Also working with a good cinematographer, other good actors, and a good production company is of added value. Generally speaking, it is important to choose according to the people you are working with because you are not going to work alone!

6. AWAY FROM THE SPOTLIGHTS, HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR TIME?

I DON’T

WANT JUST TO DO

A ROLE FOR THE

SAKE OF IT,

& FOR THE SAKE OF

APPEARANCE,

If I am not working, I mostly spend my time with my four-year-old daughter. I also like to read and hangout with friends, but I try to give my daughter priority because I spend lots of time away from her when I am filming. I try to give her all my time and attention as much as I can whenever I can.

7. WHAT ARE YOUR COMING PROJECTS?

I finished filming my role with Eyad Nasar and director Ahmed Khaled in their new TV series, where I am only a guest in one episode. Currently, I am preparing for a new series for next Ramadan, it’s a new role for me, I’ve never done anything like it before but I promise it is going to be a good surprise.

8. WHO DO YOU WISH TO WORK WITH?

I wish to work with a lot of directors like, Kamla Abu Zekry, Tamer Mohsen and Mohamed Amin, either as a director or scriptwriter, as well as Khalid Marey. I would love to work with superstars like Ahmed Elsakka, Menna Shalaby and Hend Sabry.

9. DO YOU DREAM OF INTERNATIONAL FAME AND RECOGNITION?

Of course, who doesn’t dream of being globally known? But it’s a hard step at the moment, especially that I still have a lot to offer as an actress in Egypt before I start thinking about global recognition.

I WANT TO MAKE 10. HOW DO YOU

SOMETHING I AM

CONTENT

WITH.

EVALUATE YOURSELF NOW?

I think I’ve reached a very good level. I have made good movies and TV series and worked with huge names. I am happy that people like me. Yet, I am very ambitious... there are a lot of roles that I dream to do, as I believe I still have a lot to offer.

After three years away from the music field, Tamer Ashour returns strongly with his fourth hit album ‘Esht Maak Hekayat’. Insight met the talented singer who unleashed all the bits and pieces of his newest hit album, the reason for his long break, and his up and coming projects.

By: Shaimaa Elhwity

WHY DID YOU TAKE SO MUCH TIME TO PREPARE FOR YOUR NEW ALBUM?

YOU PRODUCED YOUR LATEST ALBUM, WAS THE EXPERIENCE DIFFICULT OR LIBERATING?

Of course it was way liberating however signing with ‘Alam Alfan’ and ‘Mazzika’ I had the same amount of freedom as they supported my choices due to their huge confidence on the artists they work with. At ‘Mazikka’ and ‘Alam Alfan’ the principle of control does not exist, I only produced for myself in a certain stage and then they continued with the final stages of the process.

WERE YOUR PROBLEMS WITH ‘ROTANA’ THE MAIN REASON YOU DIDN’T RELEASE YOUR ALBUM FOR MORE THAN THREE YEARS?

My problems with Rotana are bygone stories now, I won’t deny that it was one of the reasons my album was delayed but mainly I had to finish my recruitment period at the army before I started preparing for my album.

YOU ARE FAMOUS FOR YOUR DRAMATIC AND SAD SONGS, YET YOUR ALBUM ONLY CONTAIN THREE OF THAT GENRE DON’T YOU CONSIDER THAT A RISK?

My latest Album ‘Lya Nazra’ was released in 2011, after that the entire Arab world lived a lot of struggles and ups and downs on the political level. Then I had the army service and after ending my recruitment period I started preparing for the album immediately. But I promise my fans my next album will be ready in a shorter period of time.

YOU COMPOSED SOME OF YOUR OWN SONGS IN THIS ALBUM AS YOU DID IN YOUR PREVIOUS ONE. CAN YOU PROGRESS AN ALBUM WITHOUT YOUR OWN COMPOSITIONS IN IT?

Yes it is very likely that my coming album doesn’t have any of my tunes as long as I work with a group of professional who will add to me.

YOU WORKED FOR THE FIRST TIME AS A DISTRIBUTER IN ‘BERAGHM ALZEROUF’ FOR ELISSA, WHY DIDN’T YOU

I think having three melodramatic songs is a good percentage in an album that contains a wide collection that meets every style and taste.

I am not accustomed to distribution because it takes a lot of time and requires a lot of commitments. Elissa was the one who insisted that I do the distribution for ‘Beraghm Alzerouf’, which I composed as well. But I think it will be harder to distribute my own songs.

YOU SANG A LOT OF TV INTROS AND NATIONAL SONGS. DO YOU THINK THAT THESE TYPES LIVE MORE BECAUSE THEY ARE TIED TO SERIES WE LOVE?

There is no doubt that these songs live longer, but they don’t affect the artist’s presence at all.

THE FIRST RELEASE OF YOUR ALBUM WAS SOLD OUT IN A FEW DAYS. DO YOU THINK SALES ARE AFFECTED BY PIRACY AND THE INTERNET?

My real success is when my album is sung by my fans. Sales and viewership are part of that success as well. When it comes to piracy, some companies know how to fight back, they have sufficient control over their songs, their songs exist in their official channels and what they are doing is significantly reducing piracy.

YOU FILMED BOTH OF YOUR NEW CLIPS WITH THE SAME MODEL, ARE THEY BOTH CONNECTED WITH THE SAME STORY?

YOUR NEW ALBUM WITNESSES YOUR FIRST COLLABORATION WITH AMR MOUSTAFA. HOW CAN YOU DESCRIBE THIS COLLABORATION ESPECIALLY THAT YOU BOTH STARTED AS COMPOSERS AND ARE NOW SINGERS? Amr Moustafa is a superstar. It’s a huge addition for me to work with such a huge talent who has a larger history and larger experince. But in my opinion the era of competitions ended and only good work imposes itself.

DISTRIBUTE ANY OF YOUR OWN SONGS?

That’s true, we wanted to bind both clips together with the same idea and the story will be continued in my new clip ‘Esht Ma’ak Hekayat’.

FROM YOUR LATEST ALBUM, WHICH SONG IS THE CLOSEST TO YOUR HEART AND WHY?

MY REAL

‘Esht Ma’ak Hekayat’ touched my heart with its sentimental and beautiful lyrics, as well as ‘Giet Ala Karamty’ as singing from a female point of view was really interesting.

Resolutions

We have all heard the phrase, “New Year, New You!” Well, how many of us have made countless New Year’s Resolutions only to end up failing after a week of trying to be a “New You”? Here are the most commonly attempted and failed New Year’s Resolutions. Which ones have you attempted?

Eat healthier

We can only eat so much salad. You will get sick of it soon enough.

Get a boy/girl Friend

Why is this a N.Y Resolution? Sounds crazy and desperate.

Get Organized

Life is messy, but you shouldn’t have to set a resolution to get organized. If you want your life in check, be organized all the time.

Give up Facebook

You have the app on your phone and check it more than 3 times a day. We highly suggest not trying this. It will result in an epic failure.

Gossip Less

Girls will gossip less when pigs can fly. I applaud anyone who tries this, but we all know it isn’t realistic.

Join a Gym

Sure, you’ll be on the fitness wagon for 2 weeks or a month just like all those other people. Then, you will stop going and end up wasting money on that gym membership.

Learn a new Language

I can bet that Rosetta Stone sales go through the roof in January. Who wants to drop 0 on something that they won’t follow through on?

We should always read books, it keeps our minds fresh. Don’t need a resolution for this one.

Run a Marathon

Very ambitious but also maybe 10% of people who say they will do this actually go through with it.

Set a Monthly Budget

Another one that will last for a month. I dare someone to try to do this for a year and succeed.

Order Take out Less

Sleep More

If you order takeout all the time, let yourself order take out. I guarantee that you only save a little by going to the grocery store.

This will never happen. We all know that our favorite shows don’t end till 10 p.m and there’s no way you fall asleep before 11 p.m.

Quit Smoking

Lose Weight

I applaud anyone who tries to kick this habit. But, having a few family members try this and fail, I don’t see a light at the end of the tunnel for many on this.

Learn Something New

Pretty sure that we already learn something new each day and just don’t notice it.

This is probably the most common one. People will lose a few pounds the first month, then end up packing it back on.

Travel More

Sure, who doesn’t love to travel? Traveling can become pricey though. Just remember that this one is probably not realistic for most.

10 WAYS TO HAVE PEACEFUL,

Loving

RELATIONSHIPS Love and

COMPASSION

are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive. Dalai Lama

Relationships are not easy. They mirror everything we feel about ourselves. When you’ve had a bad day, the people around you seem difficult. When you’re not happy with yourself, your relationships seem to be lacking. If you’ve ever gotten in a fight only to find yourself wondering what you were really upset about, if you’ve ever been disappointed because someone didn’t meet your expectations, this post may help you too. Feel walked on and unheard? You guessed it—there’s likely something in here that will help you change that.

62 insight

1. Do what you need to do for you. Everyone has personal needs, whether it’s going to the gym after work or taking some alone time on Saturday morning. If someone asks you to do something and your instinct is to honor your own need, do that. I’m not saying you can’t make sacrifices sometimes, but it’s important to make a habit of taking care of yourself. Someone once said people are like glasses of water. If we don’t do what we have to do to keep our glass full, we’ll need to take it from someone else— which leaves them half full. Fill your own glass so you can feel whole and complete in your relationships.

2. Give people the benefit of the doubt. It’s tempting to doubt people—to assume your boyfriend meant to hurt you by not inviting you out with his friends, or your friend meant to make you feel inadequate by flaunting her money. People who care about you want you to feel happy, even if sometimes they get too wrapped up in their own problems to show it well. Sometimes they may be hurtful and mean it—let’s not pretend we’re all angels. But that won’t be the norm. It will likely be when they’re hurting and don’t know what to do with it. Odds are they’ll feel bad and apologize later. If you want to get good will, share it by seeing the best in the people you love. When we assume the best, we often inspire it.

3. Look at yourself for the problem first. When you feel unhappy with yourself, it’s easy to find something wrong in a relationship. If you blame another person for what you’re feeling, the solution is on them. But this is actually faulty logic. For starters, it gives them all the control. And secondly, it usually doesn’t solve the problem, since you didn’t actually address the root cause. Next time you feel the need to blame someone for your feelings—something they did or should have done—ask yourself if there’s something else going on. You may find there’s something underlying: something you did or should have done for you. Take responsibility for the problem and you have power to create a solution.

4. Be mindful of projecting.

7. Don’t be afraid to be vulnerable.

In psychology, projecting refers to denying your own traits and then ascribing them to the outside world or other people. For example, if you’re not a loyal and trusting friend, you may assume your friends are all out to get you. It’s a defence mechanism that allows you to avoid the discomfort of acknowledging your weaknesses. There’s no faster way to put a rift in your relationships. This comes back to down to self-awareness, and it’s hard work. Acknowledging your flaws isn’t fun, but if you don’t, you’ll continue seeing them in everyone around you. And you’ll continue to hurt. Next time you see something negative in someone else, ask yourself if it’s true for you. It might not be, but if it is, identifying it can help create peace in that relationship.

There are all kinds of ways you can feel vulnerable in relationships: When you express your feelings for someone else. When you’re honest about yourself or your past. When you admit you made a mistake. We don’t always do these things because we want to maintain a sense of power. Power allows us a superficial sense of control, whereas true, vulnerable being allows us a sense of authenticity. That’s love: being your true self and allowing someone else to do the same without letting fear and judgment tear it down. It’s like Jimi Hendrix said, “When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace.”

5. Choose your battles.

When you feel a strong emotion, try to sit it for a while. Don’t use it or run from it—just feel it. When you learn to observe your feelings before acting on them, you minimize the negativity you create in two ways: you process, analyze, and deal with feelings before putting them on someone else; and you communicate in a way that inspires them to stay open instead of shutting down.

Everyone knows someone who makes everything a fight. If you question them about something, you can expect an argument. If you comment on something they did, you’ll probably get yelled at. Even a compliment could create a confrontation. Some people just like to fight—maybe to channel negativity they’re carrying around about the world or themselves. On the one hand, you have to tell people when there’s something bothering you. That’s the only way to address problems. On the other hand, you don’t have to let everything bother you.

6. Confront compassionately and clearly. When you attack someone, their natural instinct is to get defensive, which gets you nowhere. You end up having a loud conversation where two people do their best to prove they’re right and the other one is wrong. It’s rarely that black and white. It’s more likely you both have points, but you’re both too stubborn to meet in the middle. If you approach someone with compassion, you will open their hearts and minds. Show them you understand where they’re coming from, and they’ll be willing to see your side. That gives you a chance to express yourself and your expectations clearly. And when you let people know what you need at the right time in the right way, they’re more likely to give that to you.

8. Think before acting on emotion.

9. Maintain boundaries. When people get close, boundaries can get fuzzy. In a relationship without boundaries, you let the other person manipulate you into doing things you don’t want to do. You act out of guilt instead of honouring your needs. You let someone offend you without telling them how you feel about it. The best way to ensure people treat you how you want to be treated is to teach them. That means you have to love and respect yourself enough to do that: to acknowledge what you need, and speak up. The only way to truly have loving, peaceful relationships is to start with a loving, peaceful relationship with yourself.

10. Enjoy their company more than their approval. When you desperately need someone’s approval, your relationship becomes all about what they do for you—how often they stroke your ego, how well they bring you up when you feel down, how well they mitigate your negative feelings. This is draining for another person, and it creates an unbalanced relationship.

GET

Yourself READY

FOR THE NEW YEAR G

etting yourself ready is just so important and probably even more beneficial in the long run. In a small business, our personal lives are so tied to the business that the overlapping areas are often gray. Here are 10 tasks you can do to get prepared.

1

Write a family holiday letter, summarizing the major events for the year. People really do like to know what you’re up to. Keep it light and fun and only about a page or two long. This also provides a history for your family files of what happened this year. Put a copy in your family scrapbook.

2

Start or update a blessings log (or whatever means something to you, like accomplishments or thanks). Just seeing a positive list of what you’ve managed to do will help reduce a total focus on the negatives.

64 insight

3

Get your family budget in order. Decide what major home improvement or decorating projects you want to do. Decide what vacations you will go on. Having a money plan is so important!

4

Choose your intentions or goals for the upcoming year. What do you personally want to accomplish? Type them up and assign dates you’d like to aim for. Go one step further and choose a theme for the year. This will help keep you focused and is easy to remember.

5 6

Create or reassess your personal mission or purpose statement. Get your files in order or have a file cleanout day. Paper can be so overwhelming if we don’t have a good system established.

7 8

Clean out your closets or garage and donate to your favorite charity by December 31st. You get the write-off and they get use of your items. A win-win for all! Decide if you need to lose weight right now, not after the holidays. It may help your willpower say “no” to a few cookies or that eggnog. If you want to join a health club, look now. There will be less crowds and pushy salespeople, plus you may get a better deal.

9

Get a gift wish-list together. Look at what you need more than what you want. If you don’t “need” anything, consider choosing your favorite charity people can give to in your name. Or, go on a day trip to spend time together. You’ll remember the experience far longer than the stuff.

10

If you’re having a hard time focusing and you know you need to regroup, consider going on a personal retreat.

TIPS TO TRANSFORM YOUR

Love Life

66 insight

R

eal talk: Dating is sometimes harder than it should be. After countless dinners and drinks, it can be tempting to resign to nights of forever watching Netflix alone in your bed. But when dating is done right, it can be amazing, and those great dates often lead to great relationships. So consider this your dating playbook, with all the information you need to survive the first date and make sure there’s a second one.

LET YOUR FRIENDS SET YOU UP

No one loves you quite like your friends do, so let them set you up with someone that they can vouch for. It’s better for single people to meet through friends because there’s a familiarity and comfort that goes with that. A friend setting you up means the guy is ‘vetted’ to some extent. So let them play matchmaker—but first, lay down some rules. Make it clear ahead of time that the way the date goes is totally not a reflection on your friend, or you, or the guy. Hey, sometimes chemistry is there, and sometimes it isn’t. So unless your friend is Patti Stanger, remind her that it’s no one’s fault if this goes horribly wrong. (But if it goes totally right, you should probably buy her a gift).

CONSIDER DATING YOUR FRIENDS

The term “friend zone” should totally be banished—in part, because your friends can sometimes make the best dates. Think about it: Someone you’re already friends with is likely to have similar values, to know your background and your family, and to make you feel ultra comfortable with them. Plus, friendship is the foundation for any relationship, so having that bond established can be key.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT DATING SITE The internet is a beautiful thing: It brought us Twitter, cat videos, Orange Is the New Black, and now, it can bring you love. But when you’re ready to make the plunge into online dating, how do you decide which site to sign up for? Think about what it is you want out of an online dating experience—A hookup? A boyfriend? A marriage?—then choose the site that matches your interests, so you’re not just wasting your time online (that’s what the cat videos are for).

FOCUS ON FIRST IMPRESSIONS

First dates can be overwhelming, so streamline your focus into making the first few moments count. It takes only 12 minutes for you to decide if you’re interested in the other person (and for them to decide if they dig you) so bring your A-game the second you arrive. To make a stellar first impression, make eye contact, smile, and focus on what he’s saying. And don’t forget to check in with yourself, too! You might be so focused on making a flawless first impression that you forget to ask yourself if you’re even into the other person.

DON’T PLAY IT COOL ON A DATE

We’ve all been told that guys love the chase, but according to research, that’s not exactly true. One study showed that men are more attracted to responsive women, and women who were kind and warm right off the bat. That doesn’t mean being over-the-top eager—you don’t have to laugh at his jokes if they’re not funny—but it’s definitely OK to respond to that text in a timely manner, or tell him how much fun you’re having. Being kind is definitely a turn on, so forget what you’ve been told about playing it ice-cold.

REAL TALK: DATING is sometimes

HARDER

THAN IT

SHOULD BE.

PAY ATTENTION TO HOW YOU TALK TO EACH OTHER

It’s more than just what you’re saying—it’s how you say it. One study showed that when men talk to a woman they find attractive, they tend to vary their vocal pitch from high to low tones (in a sing-songy way). If you’re looking to analyze the long-term potential, pay attention to the types of words you both use. Another study suggested that people who use the same function words (maybe you both say “quite” and “tons” a lot) are more likely to couple up and stay together.

FOLLOW THEIR GAZE

Is it love at first sight? It depends on where their eyeballs land. Research suggests that when someone feels a romantic connection, his or her gaze tends to linger on the other person’s face. When they just feel sexual desire, their eyes tend to wander around the person’s body. During the next date you’re on, follow their gaze. If he’s staring into your eyes all night, there’s a good chance he’s really into you.

DON’T LET YOUR FRIENDS RUIN YOUR VIBE

Getting your friends’ (and family’s) opinion on your new beau is essential, but if you ask too soon, it could color your own feelings. One study showed that when opinions were framed differently—saying that “seven out of ten” people liked your date, versus “three out of ten” people didn’t like him—it can seriously affect our own evaluation. So you might want to avoid asking for an outside opinion until you’ve gotten the chance to make one yourself.

IF YOU’RE NOT INTO HIM, MOVE ON Dating someone who you’re just not into is a total waste of time. Be realistic with yourself: Are you embarrassed to call him your “boyfriend”? Has he met your friends? Would you rather be watching Netflix than talking to him? Are you only with him for fear of being single? These are all good signs that you’re just not that into him, and you should peace out of this relationship. Trust us, being single is way better than being in a crappy relationship.

Osmanly… AN ARROW

INTO THE HEART OF

TURKEY F

or a traditional Thursday night outing, we were treated to an untraditional dining experience at Kempinski Nile Hotel’s Osmanly. Located on the second floor of the hotel, the authentic Turkish atmosphere combined with quality and mouthwatering produce makes it the perfect ambiance for outings and family gatherings. Yet they also have a private lounge for business meetings and romantic dinners. Osmanly maybe simple in design but the food is a real cut above. The atmosphere is so intoxicating, it almost makes you feel you’re in Turkey.

The staff is very friendly and superb, taking time to explain every detail about the fantastic dishes. They took their time to explain every dish on the menu with great patience and enthusiasm. Following the old Turkish tradition of royalty, we started by washing our hands with warm Jasmine water that came served in a cupper bowl and jug. For starters, we were treated with their famously superb scrumptious Turkish bread served with spicy tomato dip, olive oil dip and creamy cheese dip.

Osmanly’s menu is truly unique. We highly recommend trying their heavenly creamy ‘Lentil Soup’ with sautéed red lentils, glazed onions and croutons; we couldn’t get enough of it. For appetizers, we had an excellent selection of hot and cold mezzas served in a huge platter. In fact, portions of every offering were so generous. For the main course, the ‘Kuz Tandir’, a 12-hour slow cooked lamb leg with wheat-vegetable keskek, has the requisite wow factor, while the ‘Istanbul Kebab’ is the definite star of the main course. If you are looking for something untraditionally tasty, the grape leaves wrap ‘Sebus’ lifts the humble plate to the sublime.

68 insight

If you are aiming for a great finish to a great long meal, make sure to leave room for desert because they are truly saving the best for last! Their yummy ‘Kunafe’ is out of this world; there is no better way to describe it than a true Turkish delight! If you are in the mood to experience some great authentic cuisine, go to Osmanly! The delicious food with the good service and Mediterranean friendliness will make you feel as if you are a king of Turkish origin being pampered for that night.

his year, British Airways celebrates 25 years of local cabin crew aboard British Airways flights to London. In honour of the hard working Egyptians who serve their valuable passengers every day with professionalism, dedication, skill and most importantly, style, Britishairways have dug up some old photos of the industry’s coolest uniforms to prove that British Airways’ Egyptian cabin crew has been delivering superior service, with style, for 25 years. The most recent uniforms, created by leading British fashion designer Julien Macdonald, are worn by over 25,000 British Airways staff worldwide, including flight crew, cabin crew, dispatchers and check-in agents. The design reflects the airline’s great British heritage combining the qualities of a classic tailored pin stripe suit with the style and creative flair of Julien Macdonald. The uniform includes contemporary details such as branded cufflink buttons and a striking red lining. The British Airways uniform is much more than something that people wear to work. To British Airways’ crew and customers it represents a heritage and commitment that’s so much a part of the company’s DNA that it’s stitched into the lining. As British Airways prepares to enter the next chapter in its 93-year history, this promise as relevant today as when it first appeared on a captain’s cap-badge – To Fly. To Serve.

STEIGENBERGER CECIL HOTEL…

Authentic Heritage & Sophisticated Service T

he renowned Steigenberger Hotels & Resorts had recently announced taking over the management of the popular Cecil Hotel of Alexandria, which is currently welcoming its repeaters and discerning guests as the Steigenberger Cecil Hotel. The history of the Steigenberger Cecil Hotel goes back in time to the early days of the twentieth century, particularly the year 1929. Commissioned by the French-Jewish Metzger family, the hotel was built by the Italian-Jewish Alessandro Loria from Tuscany, to become one of Egypt’s most romantic hotels back then. In a city rich in cultural diversity as Alexandria, architecture was eclectic and no one played over such a variety of styles as Loria.

L

oria built the hotel as a landmark to immortalize the era with its elegant revolving door, two beautiful wooden elevators and a bar that was carefully kept unchanged since World War II. The rooms have high ceilings and large shuttered windows complemented with the richness in the burgundy, gold drapes and soft furnishings that decorate the space, giving the place a classical French feel. When the hotel opened in 1929, it was first called the Regina Palace but within a year it was renamed to become the Cecil. The hotel was rapidly renowned as the finest hotel in Alexandria, and was the famous Lawrence Durrell’s favorite hotel in the city, due to its proximity to the sea, and later on became a landmark in his famous novel ‘The Alexandria Quartet’. The hotel was also featured in Naguib Mahfouz’s masterpiece ‘Miramar’. Other fans of the Cecil included author Somerset Maugham, Winston Churcill and Al Capone. Following the Egyptian revolution in 1952, the hotel was seized by the Egyptian government and in 2007; the ownership went back to the Metzger family who sold it back to the Egyptian government. The government 76 insight

eventually leased it to the French Hotel Chain Sofitel, before Steigenberger Hotels & Resorts took over as the managing company of the hotel in 2014 to become Steigenberger Cecil Hotel. Now the Steigenberger Cecil Hotel stands tall combining authentic history with Steigenberger’s worldfamous refined hospitality and services. Among Alexandria’s hotels, the landmark Steigenberger Cecil Hotel enjoys a unique location at El Raml station in the middle of the city, facing two of Alexandria’s main attractions - the port and Qaitbay Citadel in Saad Zaghloul square and overlooking the sea directly. Other nearby must see attractions of Alexandria city include the great Bibliotheca Alexandrina, while shopping areas, restaurants and cafes are just at the door steps of the hotel. With its distinctive location, French style, comfortable rooms and luxurious suites, Steigenberger Cecil Hotel is Alexandria’s shining star for weekend gateways, seaside vacations, corporate

events and business travels. The Hotel features 85 state-of-the art rooms, including three suites that reflect the grandeur of the time when the hotel was constructed. The hotel also features five restaurants and bars that suit every mood, perfect for unwinding and socializing while enjoying light snacks, drinks, refined international cuisines with the best international fusion dishes. Corporate facilities at the hotel are extensive with four meetings and banquet rooms that cover a total area of 363 sqm of event space, suitable to hold any type of meetings, special occasions and weddings. In addition to a fully equipped business center, meeting equipment for rental and catering and event management professionals that would help you plan and execute your event beyond your expectations. Renovation plans are set to start soon only to add to the hotel’s glamour and nobility.

THE MAGNIFICENCE

OF CAPE TOWN

WITH THE LUMIA CAMERA TABLE MOUNTAIN:

birds offer an educational and entertaining experience that appeals to the young and old alike.

The schedule did not allow for a safari ride or a visit to Robben Island, which are both a must do next time; but we were blessed to go to Table Mountain on a fog-free day and marvel at the awesome views in amazing weather. Since it’s opening, over 16 million people have taken the trip to the top of Table Mountain and The Table Mountain cableway has since become something of a landmark in Cape Town. It has carried some of the city’s most illustrious visitors including King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II, as well as Oprah Winfrey, Magaret Thatcher and Paul Oakenfold. The table mountain boasts the best views of the city from 3,563 ft above sea level and the clouds seem to creep down on the mountain forming a white table-cloth effect.

THE HOTEL:

THE AQUARIUM AND CHOPPER RIDE: We also visited the Aquarium where we had breakfast against panoramic views of sharks and fishes and saw some penguins playing. We had the chance to take picturesque photos by the sea with a backdrop of nothing less than dolphins jumping and seals having a swim. Situated in Portswood Square at the V&A Waterfront, The Aquarium showcases the unique marine life of the Atlantic and Indian oceans which lie on either side of the Cape of Good Hope. The inviting and often interactive displays of sea life and visiting 78 insight

Our stay at the Radisson Blu Hotel Waterfront - Cape Town – was highlighted with the stunning panoramic landscape from our room windows. Had it not been for a full schedule of events to do and places to see, one would have an amazing time just lounging on the bed watching the sun-rise and sun-set. Our mouth-watering breakfasts were taken at the Tobago’s bar and Terrace in the outdoors next to the pool, in the beautiful sun sharing our delicacies with the friendly sea gulls. Located in Atlantic Seaboard, this luxury hotel is within a 15-minute walk of Metropolitan Golf Club, Victoria and Alfred Waterfront Mall, and Cape Town Stadium. Writing this up, I can’t help but feel nostalgic to the great blessings from God to have seen such a gorgeous city with the native African hospitality and kindness meshed

Insight was treated - by Microsoft and Lumia - to a four-day getaway to Cape Town, the city of magnificent wildlife and great treasures. Cape Town is one of the most multicultural cities in the world, and in 2014 it was named the best place in the world to visit by The New York Times. Insight - among other publications from the Middle East and Africa as well as social media gurus and famous bloggers from the region - were given the Nokia Lumia 930 (in bright orange and florescent green) to capture with them some awesome scenes and videos and share them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. with European luxuries and great cuisine. I will not delve into describing the great food or the vast and blissful wine selection (as we were also treated to a wine-tasting session at the Tokara Wine Estate). Tokara is a picture perfect destination that offers a unique combination of award-winning wines, brandy and olive oils. The winery is nestled among vineyards and olive groves on the crest of the Helshoogte Pass with sweeping views across False Bay and all the way to Table Mountain. Oh, and btw, I forgot to mention that we were served champagne that morning after a short helicopter ride over the mountains where we had a chance to test the phone camera and take some picturesque pictures from the chopper window.

THE PHONE: The Nokia Lumia 930 almost fell from the helicopter window and again from the Telefric ride to Table Mountain, as we were all super excited to capture some of the stunning scenery. The phone (in its bright orange and green colours) proved worthy of such an experience, as no one took less than 1000 pictures on those amazing four days. With Lumia Creative Studio, you can turn any picture into a masterpiece. Use a range of filters to give a professional finish to your photos, and blur the background to add depth. You can also choose from a number of enhancements including brightness, colour tone, vibrancy and clarity, or simply crop and rotate with the reframe feature. To Nokia – I say great work – with the phone, camera and the organizers at Microsoft, thanks for a wondrous experience.

THE PHOTOGRAPHIC EXPERIENCE WITH ALVAREZ: On a more serious note, which happened to also be great fun! We were treated to a seminar with Stephen Alvarez, a photographer and filmmaker who has been working with National Geographic since1995 and has produced stories with National Public Radio, including a story on underground Paris that won a 2012 White House News Photographers Association award. Alvarez gave us tips and hints on how to improve our picture-taking techniques and photography know-hows. It was also intriguing seeing his work, speaking with him and sharing our own photos and being told they actually have substance. On a long day at the Kirstenbosch

Botanical Gardens, I also shared his emergency phone battery as mine died at the nick of time. We truly did abuse the phones and the batteries, but they came through. You can see some of his bewildering photos on his website: alvarezphotography.com

THE NATIONAL BOTANICAL GARDEN: The Kirstenbosch Garden is one of the most beautiful gardens in Africa. The garden lies in the heart of the Cape Floristic Region, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004, making Kirstenbosch the first botanic garden in the world to be included within a natural World Heritage Site. The expertly curated and meticulously maintained gardens are a real treat for the senses. The gardens trace the history of the area and celebrate the botanical diversity of the Western Cape, whilst also simply being a gorgeous place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. The only draw back to our trip is the fact that we ended up sort of envying the staff and management at Microsoft and Nokia for getting to experience this 24/7! But then again… I’m sure you guys are envying us too for getting to experience it and writing about it! I hope you enjoy the read! You can also check out other stories and more pictures on #lumiacapetown.

14 HOLIDAY FASHION

DON’TS & THEIR CELEBRITY DON’T Don’t overdo jewelry. A good rule of thumb: Never appear more ornamented than the Christmas tree. Ashley Tisdale, surrender some of that tinsel!

DO S CELEBRITY DON’T Don’t fix something that isn’t broken. The little black dress has been flattering all shapes and sizes for decades. Someone as chic as Gennifer Goodwin should know this is one look that doesn’t need innovation.

REAL DO Do choose wisely. Bold, sizable pieces of jewelry aren’t completely off-limits. The object is to have your accessories enhance the look, not detract from it. Pick a piece that won’t overshadow a beautiful smile and flirty outfit.

CELEBRITY DON’T Don’t treat your backside like a holiday gift. Sticking a big bow on it will not make it look pretty. Especially if your rear is as cute as Anna Friel’s.

80 insight

REAL DO Do highlight your other half with a flowy fabric. The downward pull of the material will slenderize the line of your back and the fluidness will accentuate (or create the illusion of) a shapely derrière.

REAL DO Do jazz up the LBD with little touches of lace, cap sleeves, or some delicate detailing on the hem, but keep it simple.

CELEBRITY DON’T Don’t make holiday fashion literal. The antlers, the pink tutu...there’s just too much wrong with Jenna Elfman’s ensemble to tackle. The bottom line: Let your clothes hint that you have a wild side, not make you look like a wild animal.

CELEBRITY DON’T Don’t allow detailing to become a sideshow. The excessive frill on Bai Ling’s gown takes her look from interesting to distracting.

REAL DO Do choose fabrics, colors, and designs that express your personality. A wild fringe or pieces made of raw suede allude to a sexy, unpredictable nature.

REAL DO Do show a little skin. When attempting the drapey look, keep sleeves and hemlines short otherwise you’ll loose your shape and just look, well, drapey.

REAL DO Do err on the side of elegance. A gown should be simple and sophisticated, drawing attention to your assets, not its accouterment.

CELEBRITY DON’T Don’t let texture create body flaws that don’t exist. The chunky bundles of sequins on this little dress add extra bulk to Katy Perry slim frame.

CELEBRITY DON’T Don’t go overboard with the drape. We love the fabric of Natasha Alam’s blouse...we just think there’s way too much of it.

REAL DO Do be a sequin snob. Pay close attention to how they’re sewn on to the fabric. The larger the sequins and the further apart they’re spaced, the more likely they are to lie flat again your figure.

HOLIDAY FOR SWING BY SETH MCFARLANE A CHRISTMAS CAROL

The story centers on Ebenezer Scrooge (Jim Carrey), a penny-pinching miser who cares nothing for the people around him, least of all his hopelessly downtrodden employee Bob Cratchit (Gary Oldman) and infectiously optimistic nephew, Fred (Colin Firth) Director: Robert Zemeckis Cast: Collin Firth, Jim Carrey and Gary Oldman

Holiday For Swing finds McFarlane tapping a 65-piece orchestra and veteran arranger-producer Joel McNeely to perform a handful of well-known ‘Let It Snow’, ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’ and semi-obscure yuletide chestnuts as ‘Christmas Dreaming’ and ‘Snow’.

CHRISTMAS BY MICHEAL BUBLE ELF

Ferrell stars as Buddy, a regular-sized man who was raised as an elf by Santa Claus (Edward Asner). When the news is finally broken to Buddy that he’s not a real elf, he decides to head back to his place of birth, New York City, in search of his biological family. Director: Jon Favreau Cast: Will Farell, James Caan and Mary Steenburgen

Michael Buble’s first full-length Christmas album is oldfashioned in the best possible sense. Buble reworked a wide range of Christmas classics in his lightly swinging pop standard style. There is a bit of swing here, contemporary pop there, and a few special guests sprinkled around.

NOEL BY JOSH GROBAN

THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS

Despite having recently presided over a very successful Halloween, Jack Skellington, aka the Pumpkin King, is bored with his job and feels that life in Halloween land lacks meaning. Then he stumbles upon Christmas town and promptly decides to make the Yuletide his own. Director: Tim Burton Cast: Danny Elfman, Cathrien Ohara and Chris Sarandon

The American sensation with the golden vocal chords tackles all the usual suspects with aplomb and just the right amount of reverence. Having stood in for Andrea Bocelli, his classical crossover appeal is achieved with ease on tracks like ’Ave Maria’, and ‘Panis Angelicus’, accompanied by Foster’s lush string arrangements. A couple of guests drop by to share the eggnog and mince pies: Faith Hill duets on ‘It Came Upon A Midnight Clear’ and The Mormaon Tabernacle Choir graces ‘O Come All Ye Faithful’ to predictably awe-inspiring effect.

Rembrandt PROFESSOR

Early Life

R

embrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was born in Leiden on July 15, 1606. He was the son of a miller. Rembrandt began his studies at the Latin School, and at the age of 14 he was enrolled at the University of Leiden. The program did not interest him, and he soon left to study art - first with a local master, Jacob van Swanenburch, and then, in Amsterdam, with Pieter Lastman. After six months, having mastered everything he had been taught, Rembrandt returned to Leiden, where he was soon so highly regarded that although barely 22 years old, he took his first pupils. Rembrandt moved to Amsterdam in 1631; his marriage in 1634 to Saskia van Uylenburgh, the cousin of a successful art dealer, enhanced his career, bringing him in contact with wealthy patrons who eagerly commissioned portraits. In addition, Rembrandt’s mythological and religious works were much in demand. Because of his renown as a teacher, his studio was filled with pupils, some of whom were already trained artists. In the 20th century, scholars have reattributed a number of his paintings to his associates. In contrast to his successful public career, Rembrandt’s family life was marked by misfortune. Between 1635 and 1641 Saskia gave birth to four children, but only the last, Titus, survived; her own death came in 1642- at the age of 30. Hendrickje Stoffels, engaged as his housekeeper about 1649, eventually became his common-law wife and was the model for many of his pictures. Rembrandt’s interests in ancient sculpture, Flemish and Italian Renaissance paintings, Far Eastern art, contemporary Dutch works, weapons, and armor was shown in the inventory of his collection of art and antiquities that was taken before an auction to pay his debts. These problems in no way affected Rembrandt’s work; if anything, his artistry increased. His personal life, however, continued to be marred by sorrow. His beloved Hendrickje died in 1663, and his son, Titus, in 1668- only 27 years of age. Eleven months later, on October 4, 1669, Rembrandt died in Amsterdam.

Interesting Facts • Despite the fact that he came from a family of relatively modest means, his parents took great care with his education. • One of his students was the famous artist Gerrit Dou. • Despite Rembrandt’s financial success as an artist, teacher, and art dealer, his penchant for ostentatious living forced him to declare bankruptcy in 1656. 88 insight
