Royal Blue Medium Round Post.

Don’t you just love this shade! it looks great combined with every single color! London fashion experts named it the color of the decade, maybe it’s because electric blue is one of the main colors in Kate Middleton’s wardrobe. You don’t have to be an expert to add a pop of blue into your outfit. There is one single rule and it says: Don’t overdo the blue. Electric blue is sure to flatter all skin tones and can compliment neutral colors such as beige and also flamboyant colors like burgundy, fuchsia pink or even pine green.

KEEP

CALM AND

POLISH

ON

Nail polish doesn’t have to be just for your nails. Check out these surprising new ways to use it!

1

Prevent new costume jewelry from tarnishing with clear nail polish.

When air hits the metal, the metal oxidizes and changes color. Clear lacquer locks out the air, helping keep your costume jewelry looking new. Try a clear fast drying nail polish. This will not work on already-tarnished accessories.

20 insight

2

Prevent a run in your stockings from getting worse with clear nail polish.

You’ve been there: You’re at a party and notice you have a run in your tights. To keep it from getting worse, keep a mini bottle of clear nail polish with you, and paint it over the tear. As it hardens, it will help stop the run in its tracks.

Instantly change the color of jewelry with nail polish.

3

If you’re tired of that old statement necklace or cocktail ring, change the look of it by painting the faux jewels with a pop of color, like neon green, orange, pink, or even a chic white shade. Simply lay the accessory flat on a paper towel or, for earrings, hold by its back in your hand, and begin to paint.

4

Paint your regular bobby pins a vibrant color or glittery shade to add some color to your hairstyle.

If you want to amp up your regular old bobby pins, hold the bottom piece (the side that juts out further) apart from the top piece and paint the tops only. Then, slip them onto an envelope or note card to let them dry.

5

If you hate licking envelopes, seal them easily by painting the underside of the flap (where you would normally lick it) with clear polish.

Paint your keys so that you can tell which key is for which lock.

If you have tons of keys for your house, locker, bike, an easy way to remember which key goes with what lock is to color-code your keys. Plus, it makes your keychain look that much prettier. And don’t worry, a coat or two won’t interfere with your key slipping into the keyhole.

8

Store your nail polish upright in a box with painted stickers on top to indicate the colors. To keep your polishes organized, paint a strip of polish on an adhesive file folder label, punch out a hole, and stick the paint sample on the top of the nail polish bottle. Repeat this for all of your polishes, set them in a box, and store them in a cool, dry place.

Thread a needle faster by running the thread over a base or topcoat.

If you’re trying to sew on a button and the thread is frayed, it can be really frustrating to try to fish the thread through the tiny needle’s hole. But, if you drag the cut thread through a nail polish brush a few times, it will harden the thread and allow you to slip it right through the needle’s eye with ease.

6

7

Seal envelopes with a clear top or base coat.

Cover up a scratch on scuffed boots. It can be hard to find shoe polish for colorful kicks, so try finding a nail polish that matches instead. But don’t rely on a bottle-toshoe comparison, since the color can look different when it’s applied. Put the hue on your nail first and give it a minute to dry to make sure it’s a close-enough match to your shoes.

10

Use nail polish to add a pop of color to the sole of your shoe.

9

Use polish to paint the sole of your high heels as an easy (and cheap!) way to update them for spring. Colored opaque formulas work best since they won’t reveal the true color of your sole, but you can go for glitter paint, too. Avoid getting paint on other parts of your shoe by placing masking tape along the edge where the shoe meets the sole, the same way you would when painting a room. Once you’ve covered the sole in paint with a fluffy paintbrush or an old buffing foundation brush, allow it to dry before applying a second coat. If another layer isn’t needed, pull off the tape to reveal a neat polish job.

(IN)SIGHT FEATURE . SCHOOL

ARE YOU READY FOR SCHOOL?

1. 1. PLAN PLAN OUT OUT AND AND RESET RESET YOUR YOUR DAILY DAILY SCHEDULE SCHEDULE Many adults and children have different schedules during summer vacation than they do during the school year. Bedtimes and wakeup times creep later or simply become irregular. Two of the biggest keys to a student’s success, though, are getting enough sleep and sticking to a consistent routine, so now’s the time to ease into the new fall schedule. Slowly move bedtimes and wakeup times back to what they should be during the school year. You can do this gradually over one or two weeks. If meal times or other regular routines have changed over the summer vacation, reset those as well. 22 insight

Block out the school schedule (holidays, test days, etc.) on a calendar. For parents, a family calendar in a prominent place helps everyone see what’s going on at a glance, including after school activities and childcare. College students should map out their class schedule for the next semester and also block out times for studying, meal, exercise, and other essentials. Web-based Semester Planners can help you organize the classes you’re taking and track assignments.

As we get ready to say goodbye to the lazy days of summer, it’s time to turn our attention to the new school year. Whether you’re a student yourself or a parent responsible for one, make the often harsh transition a lot easier with these four tips for starting the school year off on the right foot.

Figure out where you’re going. One of the biggest stressors at the start of school is if you’re going to a new building or your classes are in different locations than last year. College students should look at a campus map and plot out how they’re going to get from one place to the next, based on their schedule. Other students/parents should know the route to school, where the classrooms are, and how long it takes to get there.

2. ORGANIZE YOUR WORKSPACE & SUPPLIES If you (or your child) don’t have an organized area to work in yet, now’s the time to get it set up. Declutter and streamline the workspace. Make sure it’s a quiet, distraction-free place. Older students might benefit from using one of the many distraction-killing apps and tricks people in the workforce use. On the other hand, perhaps you shouldn’t buy textbooks ahead of time, depending on the class. it may be wise to check your school website to see if the professor of your class actually requires their students to use the textbook. If the site’s reviews say that you do not need the book for the class, then you can either not buy the book, or buy it from somewhere that you know you can return it, and receive a full refund. Or rent or copy a textbook, perhaps.

Stock up on the supplies you need, including any organization accessories like file folders or desk trays. If you’re buying a new computer for school, you might want to set the computer up before the first day of school, so you’re not fumbling with the PC at the last minute.

Make sure you have a system for processing schoolwork. (A file accordian, scanner and laptop) and keeping upcoming assignments front and center. Speaking of paperwork, there’s often lots needed at the start of the year, such as medical forms or immunization records. Now’s the time to get those medical and other appointments out of the way so you can have the forms ready when you need them.

3. GET IN THE BACKTO-SCHOOL MINDSET The new school year is a refreshing time, when you get to start it new. Then again, your mind might still be back at the beach. To get juiced up about the new semester:

Review your previous academic achievements. The summer might have made you forget about that awesome term paper you wrote last fall or the straight A’s in math. A quick review can not only energize you for the new school year, it can help you identify areas you might want to work on more this semester.

Set goals for yourself for this upcoming school year. Setting goals (and sticking with them) is an important skill students of all ages can learn. Instead of vague goals like “get good grades,” come up with SMART goals like “During the first marking period, I will complete my homework during the hours of 6 to 7 p.m. on school nights at my desk in my bedroom. After completing my homework, I will put my homework in a homework folder and put it in my backpack. At school the next day I will turn in my homework to my teacher. I will revise this goal after receiving my first marking period report card.”

4. START THE FIRST WEEK THE WAY YOU WANT TO CONTINUE Doing the above should help you get a good start on the school year. You can make the first week even easier by setting up the daily routines that make school life easier.

The weekend before, pick out outfits for the week with your child. (College students, this is up to you.) -Each night before school, prep lunch and snacks, and maybe even dinner.

Throughout the week, try to get to school early, check out the school’s resources, and start making friends in class. A “Get ready for school!” checklist might help both young and older lazybones do what’s needed to get ready in the morning.

FOR PRE-SCHOOL

PREPARE YOUR CHILD

(IN)SIGHT FEATURE . SCHOOL

Your child’s first day at nursery or playgroup can be a daunting prospect for both you and him. But our advice will help to ensure that his experience of nursery or playgroup is a happy one from the start. 24 insight

BOOST HIS SOCIAL CONFIDENCE Socializing with other children is a skill that has to be learnt gradually, and some children will find it easier than others. If you can introduce him to the idea of sharing and taking turns before he starts at preschool he’ll find the whole experience less daunting. Don’t expect great things at first - children usually play alongside each other rather than together until they’re around three years old. And while you don’t need to stand over young children while they play, you need to be close by to step in if they start to squabble over toys. If you don’t have a network of other mums with children the same age as yours, joining a mother and toddler group is a great way to introduce your child to socializing while you keep a watchful eye.

TIME AWAY FROM PARENTS It will be easier for your child to settle at preschool if you’ve gradually got him used to being left with grandparents, relatives and friends. Start off by leaving him for short periods - an hour while you go shopping, for example - and then gradually build it up until your child is happy to be left for

a whole morning or an afternoon without you. Most children won’t like being left with preschool workers they don’t know at first, but it shouldn’t be long before he comes home chatting about what “Mrs X said” and “Mrs Y did”.

VISIT THE PRESCHOOL When you’re choosing a preschool, it’s usually best to visit it without your child the first time. The next time take your child with you and see how he responds to the environment and watch how the carers interact with him. You should be allowed as many familiarization visits as you feel your child needs. Some preschools will allow you to leave your child for short visits without you to see how they get on. When you get home, talk positively about the school, the activities that go on, the other children and the staff. Chat through any worries your child has before they start for real.

POTTY TRAINING Some preschools will expect children to be out of nappies before they start, so find out what the policy is if you don’t think your child will be ready. However, all preschool staff should be prepared for occasional accidents and won’t expect children to ask every time they need the toilet - they’ll get plenty of gentle reminders. Pack spare pants and a change of clothes in your child’s bag just in case and tell him that no-one will be cross if they do have an accident.

FEEDING THEMSELVES If your child is to have any meals at preschool other than drink and biscuits, find out if they’ll be expected to use a knife and fork or whether hands are acceptable. Practice at home with a little knife and fork, but don’t expect your child to be able to cut up his own food - the staff will do this for him. Make sure you tell the preschool staff about any strong dislikes your child has, and any food allergies or intolerances.

ON THE FIRST DAY • Allow plenty of time. The chances are, your child won’t be prepared for you to just drop him off and leave on the first day, so be prepared to hang around until he’s settled. • You’ll probably be feeling just as anxious and emotional as they are, but try to stay cheery and confident - children pick up on your feelings of apprehension. • Explain to your child when you’ll be back - don’t fob him off with fibs such as “Mummy’s just going to move the car” when you make your exit. Tell him you’ll be back after lunch/drink and biscuit time/story time. • Leave your contact number with staff in case they need to call you. • If your child cries and won’t let you leave, ask staff for advice. In most cases they’ll ask you to stay for a while with your child in the early days. • When you’ve said your goodbyes, try not to worry. If there is a problem, you’ll be contacted, but in most cases your child will be enjoying their exciting new experience.

You already know the best parts about being a freshman, but what’s freshman year really like? For those of you who are getting ready for your first year of college, here are 10 things no one tells you.

26 insight

?

1 3 5 7

YOU MIGHT NOT FIND “YOUR PEOPLE” RIGHT AWAY.

Like any relationship, friendships take work -- and time. Finding your “group” won’t happen overnight, and that’s completely normal. You’ll make new friends in a natural way and you never know when you’ll form an unlikely friendship, whether it’s you and a classmate bonding over the coolest professor or when you’re standing in line to pay for your freshman fees.

YOU’RE NOT “ANTI-SOCIAL” JUST BECAUSE YOU’RE NOT PART OF A SORORITY/ CLUB.

Being part of your school’s social life can be awesome, but that doesn’t make you “antisocial” if joining a sorority/ club isn’t your thing. There are plenty of ways to meet people and have fun that don’t require pledging.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO DECLARE YOUR MAJOR.

Contrary to popular belief, most schools don’t require you to pick a major at freshman year, so you don’t need to stress if you don’t know what you want to study for the next four years. Take advantage of your chosen courses and don’t be afraid to dive into subject areas that interest you. Now is the time to explore different classes and figure out what you’re passionate about learning.

2 4 6

YOU DON’T HAVE TO “DRESS UP” FOR CLASS, GOING OUT... OR ANYTHING, REALLY.

Despite what “Gossip Girl’ might have told us, you shouldn’t feel pressure to wear stilettos to your 8 a.m class. In college, there is no official “dress code” and chances are most of your classmates will be wearing sweats and sneakers. Even on the weekends, it’s perfectly acceptable to wear comfy clothes when going out -- especially when it’s the winter and freezing temperatures. Wear what makes you feel the most comfortable, always.

8

Finding your

YOUR INTRO CLASSES MIGHT BE A SNORE.

Oftentimes, those “101” classes can give you a major case of deja vu. You might find yourself asking, “Didn’t I learn this stuff in high school already?” While this might be true, that doesn’t mean you should necessarily take this as a free pass to skip out on class. Instead, look on the bright side: Studying for exams just became way easier.

THE “FRESHMAN 15” IS A MYTH.

Of course your eating habits will change when you get to college -- that’s what happens when you live in a completely different environment -- and there is no reason to feel fear (or shame) about it. So, throw out your scale and do your best to focus on feeling healthy and celebrating your body at any size.

IT MIGHT TAKE MORE THAN A WEEK TO GET OVER HOMESICKNESS -- AND THAT’S OK.

Whether you’re going to college an hour from home or across the country, it’s totally normal to get those pangs of homesickness. From your mom’s homemade mac n cheese to snuggling with the family dog, sometimes it’s the little things that you miss the most. It also might take you more than a few days to adjust to your new environment and feel at ease. Everyone is different; so don’t feel like there’s something “wrong” with you if you’re finding it hard to shake those feelings. Instead, focus on keeping yourself busy, and remember that mom and dad are just a Skype date away.

IT’S POSSIBLE TO MAKE FRIENDS WITH PEOPLE OUTSIDE OF YOUR CLASSES.

Sure, you’ll be spending a lot of time in your classes, but it’s cool if you don’t necessarily become BFFs with everyone attending your classes. While it’s great to get to know the people you’re sharing majors with, the best way to meet people in college is by branching out. Join the student newspaper or try an intramural sport. There are dozens of different ways to make friends in college, so don’t limit yourself.

10 Hair

Rules You’re Breaking

riahsel

Whether you’re after gorgeous color, a bombshell blowout, or overall super-healthy locks, stylists know the tricks to get you there. Here, we brought you their top must-try tips.

Drop the towel

Find a shampoo that lathers less

Keeping wet strands wrapped in a towel for a half-hour as you do your make-up will just cause frizz! The roughness of the cotton forces your hair cuticles open, making them more likely to go every-which-way. Instead, squeeze out excess water as soon as you’re out of the shower, then let your hair air-dry for five or ten minutes before blow-drying.

Give your locks a burst of cold

Whether you’re curling, straightening, or whatevering, applying product 10 minutes in advance helps it fully absorb into your strands so you get all of its benefits and more bang for your buck.

Sudsy doesn’t necessarily mean clean—sometimes, it means the opposite. Shampoos that lather too much are often overloaded with moisturizing products, which can leave build-up in your hair, making it look and feel dirtier quicker. So opt for a sulfate-free formula.

Before you hop out of the shower, turn the cold water on for a second and quickly rinse it through your strands. It helps seal the cuticle, adding a sleek finish to your locks.

Play hot-and-cold as you dry

When using a round brush to dry your hair in sections, start from the roots and dry all the way to the ends, letting the brush linger at the tips of your strands. Let your hair cool off like this on its own for five seconds and then repeat on another section. Alternating between heat and cool-down time helps set your style, and your blowout will have more body.

Do an at-home glaze between color appointments

Glazes fill holes and rough spots in your hair cuticles, helping smooth your locks and put moisture back into your hair. This keeps your color shiny and bright so it lasts longer and looks better. Plus, you can snag an at-home kit from your local drugstore.

Use rollers for high-volume

For sex-kitten lift, blow out your locks until they’re dry. Then, section off the hair on top of your head—between your temples and all the way back to the crown of your hair. Divide that section into three smaller sections vertically and wrap each in a 2-inch hair roller. Let your hair sit like this for 30 minutes, and then unwrap your strands, lightly comb them out, and spray for hold.

Apply products minutes before you style

Wrap—don’t clamp—your hair for quick curls When using a curling iron, you don’t need to fasten your locks to the barrel. Wrap sections around the iron and hold in place for about 10 seconds to score the same soft, sexy curls.

Use spray bottles as your new lazy-day BFF

If you wake up and your locks are totally flat or grungy from the day before, just spray the top layer of your hair until damp, and then use a big barrel roundbrush (2 inches or more) to blow your locks dry. You’ll score high volume on that top layer, and since it’s freshly blown out, you’ll create the illusion of all-over smooth hair.

Use dry shampoo a different way

Instead of waiting until your locks need a dirt-fighting pick-me-up, apply a dab of dry shampoo to your roots immediately after you wash and dry them. Though your hair’s already clean, the barrier will stave off the debris and oil your strands will collect throughout the day before it hits. Bonus: It also gives you killer volume.

HOW TO GLOW

Just because summer is fading into fall, you don’t have to say goodbye to gorgeous glowing skin. While your lightweight tinted moisturizer and bronzer settle in for a long winter’s nap (we know you’ll replace them for next year!), you can face FALL with a polished, luminous complexion that is silky smooth and matte, but definitely not flat. A great skincare regimen and the right makeup will up the glow-wattage for a flawless FALL face that glimmers with the season’s deeper, richer tones.

GOOD MORNING SUNSHINE

Between all the sun and fun, your face takes a beating in the summer. Getting a gorgeous glowing fall complexion starts with the smoothest possible skin, so go with the dream team: exfoliant and toner. First, exfoliating removes the dead skin cells that summer leaves behind for a smoother, freshfaced look. Thanks to the brilliance of overthe-counter beauty companies, a bevy of cleansing-exfoliants are out there. Look for a combo of natural apricot seeds (so gentle yet effective) and salicylic acid to shrink the appearance of pores. Next, sweep on a toner to balance moisture, especially during the change of seasons.

CHILL TIME

Fall is always a fresh start, so think about how you can boost your inner glow. Commit to making ‘me time’ for exercising, relaxing, even napping. If you can’t get in a workout, try meditation (if it’s good enough for Oprah, it’s good enough for us). Feeling good and mental well-being are so much a part of looking good, (okay, products help!). You’ll be glowing in no time.

As the days get chillier, moisturizer is a girl’s best friend for brilliant, illuminated skin. Moisturizing boosts your skin’s natural cell regeneration process, which is one of the keys to getting your glow on. With the onset of cooler weather your skin produces less oil, so your moisturizer should be richer and thicker for fall vs. summer. Typically jarproducts are heavier while pumps and tubes have lighter consistency. Choose a product based on your skin type, normal, dry, oily, sensitive, or combination, and keep up the SPF.

GET IT RIGHT AT NIGHT

A truly gorgeous glow comes from advanced treatment products that do the heavy lifting in terms of your skin’s overall health. And nighttime is the right time to let them work their magic. After you’ve removed all your makeup and washed your face with an anti-aging formula (we love a cleanser that does double duty to remove dirt, makeup, and oil and revitalize at the same time!) It’s time to layer on the luxury. Try a triple powered serum that works to repair summer sun-damage, wrinkles, replenish facial volume, and resurface skin texture. Next, layer on an anti-aging, contouring, eye treatment for extra lift and luminosity. Finish with a deep activating moisturizer and you’ll slide right into bed for a night of unmatched beauty sleep.

We’ve all caught a glimpse of that girl who manages to work the flawless-natural look through fall. We sleuthed her out and found her secret weapon: a post-moisturizer, prefoundation primer that works as an instant skin smoother for ultimate light reflection. Layered on your clean, moisturized face, you haven’t seen smooth until you’ve tried one. Primers instantly erase the look of lines, wrinkles, and pores so you can wear it alone or with foundation. Fun fact: fine artists use primer (the art version) to create the ideal, smooth canvas before painting. You get the picture: with primer, you are masterpiece material.

BARE-FACE BEAUTY

True, we’ve been obsessed with the barely there look and feel of BB creams all year. It seriously transforms from a liquid to a soft, powdery finish that provides amazing coverage, but feels (and looks) like you’re wearing nothing. What’s cooler than going nude in the fall? Going with this Nude Liquid Powder! You can layer an illuminating correcting serum under it for an extra-oomphglow that goes on forever.

LIGHT UP THE NIGHT

With everyone back from vacation, fall nightlife has (finally) picked up! You can take your polished FALL face up a notch with strategic use of shimmering, glimmering highlighting blush and highlighting wands applied to your cheek bones, brow bones (even your décolletage!). Intensify your eyes with a bit of highlighter applied on the inner and outer corners, and get a little fancy with fall colors. Super sexy with lots of drama, the night is a-glow with you.

Diet

Without careful attention to your diet, you could end up putting on the freshman 15 and more. Follow these tips to help keep your diet healthy and beneficial.

1

Learn proper portion size. To avoid eating too much of even the healthiest foods, keep track of how much you’re eating. For most people, meat servings should be about the size of a deck of cards and other servings vary by the type of food. Vary your meals. When the cafeteria has your favorite foods daily it can be easy to return to those old favorites every day. Changing up your diet from day to day is an important part of good nutrition so take advantage of the variety of selections available to you. Eat breakfast. Start your day off right with a good meal when you get up. Whether you’re rolling out of bed at noon or up at the crack of dawn for class, make sure you start your day with a balanced, healthy meal. Keep healthy snacks around. It’s easy to eat healthy if you keep the Cheetos at bay and stock your bag with fruits and other healthy snacks. You’ll be more likely to reach for these than junk food if you keep them nearby or in your backpack. Don’t fight stress by eating. It can be tempting to reach for a bag of chips or some cookies when you’re stressed out about an impending exam. Eating won’t help your stress go away, so avoid filling up on snacks. Try working out or taking a break instead. Drink water. Drinking enough water can help boost your concentration as well as keep you from overeating. Make sure to keep hydrated as you go through your day by bringing water with you. Limit sugary and caffeinated beverages. Beverages may not fill you up, but they sure can help fatten you up and have a detrimental effect on your overall health. You don’t have to completely give up soda and coffee, but you should scale back in order to keep yourself in tip top shape. Try to eat fruits and veggies. Even if fruits and vegetables don’t comprise some of your

2 3 4 5

6 7

8

favorite foods, try to incorporate at least a few of them into your diet each day. Limit junk food. Junk food is fast and easy and many students end up eating a lot of it while they’re on the run to class or to work. While a little fast food now and again won’t really hurt you, make sure it doesn’t become a habit. Make it convenient to eat right. Don’t make it hard for yourself to eat right. Buy healthy foods and stock your fridge with them to ensure they’re the first things at hand when you get hungry. Don’t skip meals. With so much to do, it’s easy to forget eating to run off to class or the library. Don’t skip meals. Set up foods you can eat on the run so you’ll have the energy to keep going. Indulge every once in awhile. A little treat now and then is a great way to reward yourself for eating a healthy diet. Give yourself a break and indulge in a food you love but can’t eat all the time. Take vitamins. If you feel like you aren’t getting the nutrition you need from your diet, don’t hesitate to supplement it with some multivitamins to stay healthy and illness free. Get help for eating disorders. While many groups focus on helping students lose weight, there are those who need help fighting eating disorders as well. If you are worried you have an eating disorder and want help, don’t be afraid to reach out to campus resources for help.

Exercise Fitting exercise into a busy schedule isn’t always the easiest thing, but take stock of some of these tips to help you get on track to fitness.

15

Stretch first. Help yourself avoid injuries by stretching each time you exercise. Simple stretches before and after you workout or engaging in a physical activity can help keep you active and pain free. Ride your bike. Instead of taking the bus or driving to class, try biking instead. It will give you a few minutes of exercise between your courses.

16

17

Play a sport. One way to get yourself motivated to exercise is to make it a game by playing a sport. Join an intramural team or play recreational sports through your school to get active and have fun at the same time. Use safety equipment. No matter what sport you’re playing, make sure to always use the proper safety equipment. It will keep you from getting hurt which will allow you to stay active more often. Head to the gym. Most schools provide students with gym facilities they can take advantage of for free. Head to the gym between classes or when you get up in the morning to squeeze in a workout. Walk to class. While taking public transportation might be quicker, walking will give you a chance to stretch your legs, burn some calories and relax before your next class. Incorporate different kinds of exercise in your routine. When you workout, don’t just stick to one kind of workout. Incorporate strength training, cardio and stretching exercises into your routine to make it well rounded. Make it fun. You’re probably not going to work out if you are bored with your routine or find going to the gym torture. Find a way to make it fun for yourself and you’ll be much more likely to keep it up. Bring a friend. With someone else relying on you showing up, you’ll be much more likely to make the effort to workout. Plus, working out with a friend can be a great way to make working out more fun. Take advantage of open spaces. Most colleges are equipped with large grassy quads or arboretums with trails you can walk on. Take advantage of these spaces to take hikes, play frisbee or just walk around.

How to

Anxiety? deal

Anxiety Can Be a Crippling,Painful, physically wrenching

Experience

34 insight

with

W

e all have anxiety, but some of us have it more than others. It’s normal to feel anxious when you’re going on a job interview or on a first date, and—believe it or not—it can actually be healthy, as a little bit of anxiety can help push us forward and get us through difficult experiences by lending them a sense of urgency. While many of us can handle our momentary lapses into anxiety just fine, anxiety can be a crippling, painful, physically wrenching experience for those suffering more heavily. If it’s like that for you, then perhaps it’s time you consider doing something about it. Here, we’ve got 11 easy tips to help you handle your anxiety.

STAY HEALTHY

GET SOME SLEEP

Eating well and exercising regularly can help shave off anxiety—when you’re feeling physically healthy it’s easier to feel mentally healthy and on top of your game. There are some foods that are recognized as good mood-foods, so you may want to give those a shot: nuts, soy, milk and yogurt, dark green leafy vegetables, dark orange vegetables, broth soups, legumes, citrus, wheat germ, tart cherries, and berries have all been shown to help improve your state of mind.

Are you sleeping enough? If not, you could be making your anxiety and stress a lot worse than they need to be. Not getting a full night’s sleep can wreak havoc on your internal sense of well-being and make you feel hyper-discombobulated. This can lead to feelings of anxiousness and anxiety like no other.

ASK YOURSELF, “WHAT’S THE WORST THAT COULD HAPPEN?” A lot of anxiety is managing your greatest fears—and the fact that you often have no ability to control them. When you face those fears head on, acknowledge them, and then let them go, you may find that you actually feel much better. Once you recognize your worst fears and tell them to other people, they can sometimes begin to seem a bit silly and overwrought. Not because your fears aren’t real, but because you may come to realize that worrying about them constantly won’t actually help you do anything about them, and that they often look larger in your own mind.

BE KIND TO YOURSELF Don’t beat yourself because you sometimes have a hard time dealing with the world. We all do. Treat yourself—and your anxiety—with the same kindness and thoughtfulness that you would a friend.

Anxiety is deeply connected to the sense that everything in your life is spiraling out of control. In reality, it’s not. But that pervading sense that your world is falling apart can feel deeply convincing. In order to help get your anxiety on lock, it’s sometimes helpful to do what you can to put things in order. That could mean rearranging your apartment, or cleaning your desk area. Or it could mean devising a daily check list to make sure you’re accomplishing the most important things you need to do each day. Anxiousness makes you feel helpless, so whatever you can do to empower yourself to feel in control and on top of your own destiny is a good thing.

CONNECT WITH NATURE

We’re not doctors, which is why we recommend that if your anxiety is feeling especially crippling, you should talk to yours about more advanced ways of treating it.

TUNE OUT

TAKE CONTROL

Heading out for a walk in the park or a hike in the woods can help anyone feel peaceful and grounded. (Choose somewhere you feel safe so you can relax and enjoy your surroundings.) Walking, hiking, trail biking, or snowshoeing offer the additional benefit of exercise. Invite a friend or two — or a family member — along and enjoy feeling connected to people as well.

TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR

Studies show that sometimes the best thing you can do for anxiety is to detach from it. Learn to watch your life from a distance for a minute or two—to turn your life into a movie, and let go of the internal judgments you’re constantly feeding yourself. You know the ones we’re talking about, the ones that tell you you’re good or bad, a success or a failure. Getting some distance from those thoughts can help get you out of the cycle of anxiety.

CONSIDER MEDITATION AND YOGA Meditation and yoga can help calm your frayed, stressed brain, and get you to a mellow place mentally. Even if you’re no good at meditation (and a lot of us aren’t), learning yoga breathing techniques can give you the skills you need to self-soothe the next time you feel a panic attack coming on.

CONNECT WITH OTHERS Spend time with friends or family. Organized activities are great, but just hanging out works too. Doing things with those we feel close to deepens our bonds, allowing us to feel supported and secure. And the fun and sharing that go with it allow us to feel happier and less upset about things. If you feel worried or nervous about something, talking about it with someone who listens and cares can help you feel more understood and better able to cope. You’ll be reminded that everyone has these feelings sometimes. You’re not alone.

THINK POSITIVE A great way to keep our minds off the worry track is to focus our thoughts on things that are good, beautiful, and positive. Allow yourself to dream, wish, and imagine the best that could happen.

Beauty Treatments Right From Your

kitchen

You know us—we love saving money. That’s why we’re obsessed with homemade beauty treatments. Check out these items, not only are they easy to make, the ingredients are already in your kitchen. Um, score! OLIVE OIL There are a lot of ways to use olive oil to stay beautiful 1. DEEP CONDITIONER: Massage one teaspoon of extra-virgin olive oil into dry, clean hair (pay extra attention to the ends). Then, wrap your hair in a warm, damp towel and let the oil absorb into your strands for up to 20 minutes before rinsing it out with warm water. 2. EYE MAKEUP REMOVER: Dab a few drops onto cotton ball, and then swipe it over your eyes to gently wipe off your makeup. Bonus: It serves as a great moisturizer, so no need to rinse it off. BROWN SUGAR A cheap and easy way to exfoliate your skin, this ingredient helps slough away dead skin cells from the neck down, leaving your body with a gorgeous glow. 1.SUGAR AND SPICE RUB: Mix 1/2 cup of brown sugar with two tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil, two teaspoons of instant oats, 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon—this ingredient brings blood flow to the surface, causing a plumping effect on the skin and helps zap zits—and 1/2 teaspoon of freshly grated nutmeg, which has anti-inflammatory properties, in a small bowl. Apply it to your 36 insight

skin in circular motions mid shower for two minutes, then rinse. 2 MAUI SUGAR SCRUB: Place 1/4 cup of guava or mango in a food processor and process it until it’s smooth (or mash it in a small bowl with a fork). Then, scrape the mixture into a small bowl and stir in 1/4 cup of brown sugar, one tablespoon of coconut milk, and one and 1/2 teaspoons of extra-virgin olive oil. Apply it to your skin in circular motions mid shower for two to three minutes, then rinse. You can use these same recipes on your face, but substitute the brown sugar for white granulated sugar, which is gentler on your complexion—plus, it contains antibacterial properties, so it won’t break you out. CINNAMON Cinnamon contains anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, as well as a natural grittiness that helps clear out clogged pores. (Translation: It’s great for battling breakouts.) Side note: Cinnamon can cause irritation though, so be sure to try the treatment out on your inner arm before applying it to your face. Cinnamon-ginger body scrub: Mix 1/4 cup of granulated white sugar with one tablespoon of extra-virgin olive oil, one teaspoon of ground cinnamon, and one teaspoon of freshly grated ginger root (this decreases inflammation) in a small bowl. Next, massage it onto your skin in circular motions mid shower, and then rinse.

SOOTHING OATS We heart oats. Not only do they help calm sensitive skin, they also condition an oily complexion without making it greasy. Here are two ways to beautify with them. 1. COMFORTING OAT FACE WASH: Mix two tablespoons of quick oats with one tablespoon of plain yogurt and 1/2 teaspoon of honey. Gently massage the mixture over your face (avoiding eye the area), leave it on for two minutes, and then rinse well. 2. OATMEAL AND BANANA MOISTURIZING MASK: Mash 1/4 of a ripe banana in a small bowl and mix in two tablespoons of instant oats, one teaspoon almond or soy milk, and a pinch of freshly grated nutmeg or ground cinnamon. Pat onto your face (avoiding the eye area) and then leave it on for 5 to 10 minutes before rinsing off with warm water. EGGS Eggs are great for your complexion, especially the whites of them, which temporarily help to tighten your skin. EGG WHITE AND HONEY MASK: Whisk together one tablespoon of an egg white and one and 1/2 teaspoons of honey. Next, pat the blend onto your face and let it set for 15 minutes (you should feel a tightening effect). Finally, rinse with warm water and a washcloth.

7tricks Effortless

TO IMPROVE YOUR DIET

Of course you know that eating healthy is a lifelong goal—but that doesn’t mean that it takes ages to make it happen. In fact, there are tons of quick, easy ways to be sure you’re eating well that basically involve zero effort. Here are a few to get you started:

Add Broccoli Sprouts to Salads and Sandwiches

Here’s an easy way to be sure your lunch is extra healthy: Add broccoli sprouts. They’re the one veggie that may actually remove pollutants from your body. That’s because the sprouts contain a compound called glucoraphanin, which has been linked to anti-cancer properties in animal studies. The best part? They don’t have a strong flavor, so you’ll barely even notice they’re there.

Use Red Plates

Yep, you read that correctly: Your health could be determined by the color of your dinnerware. Gotta love science! Seriously, though: a study found that people who eat off of red plates tend to eat less than those who eat off of red and blue. The researchers say that could be because our brains associate the color red with stopping—meaning just seeing the bold hue could send a signal to your brain not to overeat.

Smell a Food You Love

While Trying a New Healthy Ingredient

In today’s farmer’s market world; there are more mysterious and unknown foods than ever to try. And the cool part is that most of them—like the cucamelon—are loaded with good-for-you nutrients. But if you’re kinda squeamish about tasting them for the first time, try this trick: While testing it out for the first time, smell a food you already know you love. It’ll make you more likely to like the new one—no joke! Researchers say that’s because smelling a familiar food reduces your fear of a new one, so you’re more willing to be adventurous.

Suggest a Sushi Place for Girl’s Night

Your 80-year-old self will thank you! The Office for National Statistics recently analyzed the lifespans of women in 21 different countries and found that Japanese women live the longest. That could be due in large part to their healthy diet: They eat lots of veggies, fish, and green tea, all of which are jam-packed with vital nutrients. The best part? It’s so easy to hop on the Japanese train—who doesn’t love a good salmon avocado roll?

Spice It Up

People eat 30 percent less when they put chili peppers on their food than when they don’t. That’s because peppers are so spicy

that you tend to savor the flavor more—so you’ll slow down and taste each bite and therefore eat less overall. Nice!

Have Eggs with Yolk for Breakfast

Eggwhite omelets in the morning? Pssh. Not the best idea. A study found that high-fat, low-carb breakfasts can help you maintain a healthy weight, whereas high-carb, low-fat breakfasts may make you gain weight. The reason’s pretty interesting: Low-fat, highcarb breakfasts mess with your glucose levels because the carbs cause your blood sugar to crash—so you’re hungrier sooner afterward (and therefore more likely to snack unnecessarily between meals). Be sure to include some fat in your breakfast—in the form of egg yolks, avocado, etc.—so you’ll be less tempted to snack on junk foods later on.

Sprinkle Cinnamon on as Much as Possible

Research has linked this spice to helping lower blood sugar, and it’s also packed with polyphenols, which are antioxidants that decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease. Since it’s so easy to put cinnamon on your oatmeal, in your coffee, in your yogurt—you get the picture—there’s basically no reason not to keep a bottle of cinnamon handy and use it liberally.

When I decided to sing a national song for a different country than Lebanon I chose Egypt, a country that I love deeply.

MY SON AND FAMILY ARE THE MEANING OF MY LIFE, I WOULD HAVE NEVER ASKED FOR A GREATER GIFT

SHE’S BACK What’s the secret behind your disappearance the past years? And do you think this absence affected your stardom?

I had personal reasons. After getting married and giving birth to my only son, Elie, I had to take care of him and give him all my time and attention. Also the conditions at that time were very disturbed, everything was frustrating and people were constantly stressed! All these factors affected life in general and the music and art scene in particular. I don’t think I was affected by this pause, a lot of stars were forced to take musical breaks and their names remained stronger than ever.

What changed in your life after becoming a mother?

Everything! Now my son and family are the top priority in my life. After giving birth to my son I gained more responsibilities. Before marriage my life was my own, now my son and family are the meaning of my life, and I would have never asked for a greater gift. The most beautiful thing about being a mother is the urge to give unconditionally.

You released a special song for your son Elie. Would you consider releasing a full album for children like Nancy Ajram and Haifa Wehbe?

I started singing for Elie the moment I knew I was pregnant. The thought that came to my mind was I am an artist, I have a beautiful voice, and I sing to millions so it doesn’t make sense not to sing for my own son, especially since his father is a composer. So I chose some special lyrics with the poet Abu Melhem Antom, and my husband Melhem Abu Chedid started preparing the tunes. We wanted to present something for Elie to remember us with when he is older. I don’t think the idea of releasing a children’s album will ever hit me. I prefer to create singles for children rather than a full Album.

Recently you introduced two songs in Lebanese dialect and one in Egyptian. Did you create this combination to satisfy your audience in Egypt and Lebanon?

44 insight

Of course I wanted to be back with more than 50 songs for each Arab country and dialect, but I was only able to work on two Lebanese songs. At the same time, I decided to sing ‘Nawart Misr’ for my beloved Egyptians, and thank God it was a huge success.

Weren’t you afraid of criticism for singing an Egyptian national song?

When I decided to sing a national song for a different country than Lebanon I chose Egypt, a country that I love deeply. I didn’t sing for any political party in specific but for the entire nation. I wish things settle down for both Egypt and Lebanon. I was not afraid of being criticized for singing to Egypt; I did a lot of songs for Lebanon and the Lebanese army in my previous albums.

What about singing in Algerian in ‘Nbgyek’?

I am very happy with this experiment and its huge success, which was achieved even before the clip was released, in Egypt, Lebanon and the Gulf, not only Algeria. I sang ‘ Dandene’ in the Moroccan dialect before and it was very successful as well.

A lot of singers choose to sing in Gulf dialect and some even produce full albums in Gulf, what’s your take on that trend?

Gulf songs have existed for a very long time, but their recent increase is because Dubai has become an active destination for all production companies. Also the lack of concerts in Egypt and Lebanon on one hand and their huge increase in Moroco and the Gulf on the other leads singers to release songs in Gulf dialect.

Is it true that singers produce their own albums to seize the chance of choosing their songs away from the producers’ interference?

Honestly it didn’t happen to me before. I always choose what suits me, and each singer knows what’s better for him/her. At the end singing depends purely on feelings, but I also like to consider the professional opinion.

Superstar

What do you think of the participation of super stars to be judges in the talent competitions programs?

Participating in these programs is a double edged weapon, because the viewers get to meet the real character of the artist weekly. At the end only the artist can decide if he/she can or can’t fill the judge’s chair. Personally I have no problem participating in a similar experience but not for 5 or 6 seasons, because eventually the audience will get bored.

Of all talent programs in the Arab world, which is the most successful in your opinion? ‘The Voice’ is the most successful experience in the Arab world.

Why don’t the participated talents gain the expected success after leaving the shows?

There is more than one factor for the lack of success for these talents. They don’t understand the huge responsibility that follows that experience. They achieve success in less than one month and then find difficulty to compete after leaving; they don’t know how to continue or what to do next.

Would you consider acting at some point in your career?

I was one of the first singers who were asked to act, but I rejected it because I didn’t want to be the beautiful girl who doesn’t have any acting talents. But now I think I have become more experienced and would be able to act, I am just waiting for the right project.

What about your new album?

My new album will be out very soon. It will be in Gulf dialect and will feature 6 songs. The album is my own production. I will start shooting a song as a video clip soon to be ready for release with the album. I teamed with the poet Aseer Alryad and composer Khaled Algendy, the album will also feature a song in the Iraqi dialect, and this is the first time I’ve sung in Iraqi.

FIRST WE NEED TO KNOW WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THE FASHION WORLD? I have been interested in fashion for as long as I remember. Since my early childhood, I used to alter my mom’s clothes and help her pick her outfits. By the time I graduated from high school I had already decided that my vocation was to pursue a career in the fashion field. I enrolled in fashion design school, ESMOD Beirut in 2005, from which I graduated with honors and distinctions in 2008.

HOW CAN YOU EVALUATE THE INDUSTRY IN THE MIDDLE EAST TODAY? We can definitely say that the Emirates and the Middle East are a fashion hub for the Arab countries. Arab women are conservative but extremely stylish for that I have to give a lot of credit.

WHAT IS YOUR SOURCE OF INSPIRATION AS A DESIGNER? In terms of creativity and inspiration, the world around me has always been a rich source of inspiration; it provides me with flashes of creativity all day long, from the moment I wake until I go to bed, and sometimes even in my dreams. For me, anything can be inspiring, the music I listen to, my interaction with people, the magazines I read, watching other designers’ fashion shows, etc. Traveling, visiting new countries and getting acquainted with new cultures and fashion salons is also a major source of inspiration for me. I believe inspiration is not limited to my day-to-day activities; sometimes it strikes me in my dreams. When I dream about a new dress or design, I wake up in the middle of the night to draw it and then I go back to sleep.

A LOT OF DIVAS WERE SPOTTED SHINING IN RAMI KADI COUTURE, WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE TO DRESS AND WHY? No one in particular, any woman that portrays Rami Kadi values and image.

THE DETAILS IN YOUR DESIGNS ADD A FEMININE, CLASSY AND MODERN TOUCH TO YOUR CREATIONS, HOW DO YOU CONSTRUCT SUCH A HARD EQUATION?

To always follow their own creativity. Of course they have to be aware of the actual trend but their designs should reflect them and their personalities and not the trend.

The woman I design for is living a normal life in today’s world, but stands out with her elegance and grace. I try to reflect that woman on each of my designs and give a lot of attention to details.

IF YOU GET TO CHOOSE ONE ICON TO BE THE FACE OF YOUR NEW COLLECTION, WHO WOULD YOU CHOOSE AND WHY?

BEING ONE OF THE TOP DESIGNERS IN THE MIDDLE EAST, WHAT ARE THE DAILY BATTLES THAT YOU FACE TO STAY ON TOP? I do not face any daily battles to stay on top. The key to success is to be very passionate about what you are doing. You can succeed in anything if you really love what you do.

HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR A NEW COLLECTION? AND WHAT’S THE HARDEST PART OF THE PROCESS? My preparation for a new collection starts with a large selection of different fabric/material that I like. It helps my inspiration and leads me to a theme for my new collection. My favorite part of conceptualizing a design is working on the details of it. Every cut, every single detail is to be taken into account.

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR THE UPCOMING DESIGNERS WHO WISH TO FOLLOW YOUR PATH?

I do not have a specific icon for my new collection, but if I have to choose a muse I would go for The queen of Burlesque, Dita Von Teese, an artist who masters the art of seduction and whose fashion sense and attitude captivated me long ago. There’s something about Dita that glows with elegance and captivates everyone around her. She is the kind of women who turns heads wherever she goes.

WHAT’S NEW FOR RAMI KADI? While my dreams for the RK Brand are big, I am currently working on reaching new markets, mainly in the Middle East and Europe, where I’m putting increased efforts on spreading the renown of my creations. At a later stage, I hope to be able to develop derivative products and departments, such as a baby clothing line for example, who knows, the sky is the limit to my imagination.

(IN)SIGHT INTERVIEWS

YOU ARE AN ART DECORATOR, PRODUCTION DESIGNER AND ACTOR, WHAT DREW YOU TO EACH OF THEM?

I started as an architect in Argentina. When I came to Egypt, I was introduced to the media field. I started as a designer then I started working as a creative director for several clips and shoots, with time I started to develop in the job and it became more fun trying to create different ideas. I worked with plenty of Egyptian directors like Tarek Alerian and Hady Albagoury. I was interested in acting and I received a lot of offers to act, I started doing minor roles, then one-step after the other; I started to grow in the field.

YOUR FIRST MAJOR ROLE WAS ‘SER ALANY’, RIGHT?

Exactly, when they called me for ‘Ser Alany’ I thought they wanted me as a designer, then I met Ghada Selim, the director, and the producer and they offered me the role of ‘Omar Alalfy’. They took such huge risk by offering me such a big role, but I enjoyed the whole experience so much. Then in Ramadan 2013, I participated in three different series, ‘Hekayet Hayat’, ‘Farah Laila’ and ‘Fad Eshtebak’. I also did a guest role in ‘Moga Hara’.

ABOUT ‘MOGA HARRA’, WEREN’T YOU AFRAID OF DOING SUCH A BOLD ROLE? No, I believe an actor has to be open to new ideas in order to be able to characterize. It was an excellent opportunity to work with Mohamed Yassin, such a great director, he is very professional and knows what he is doing.

IN RAMADAN 2013, YOU PORTRAYED TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT CHARACTERS, IN TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SERIES ‘HEKAYET HAYAT’ AND ‘FARAH LAILA’, DID YOU SHOOT THEM TOGETHER? (He Laughs) Yes in addition to ‘Fad Eshtebak’ and ‘Moga harra’.

WOW! HOW WERE YOU ABLE TO MASTER ALL THESE CHARACTERS AT THE SAME TIME?

I like the method of acting and going deeply into character. While shooting these projects I was living in schizophrenia, all four characters were living with me. But at the end I was able to separate these characters while shooting and return to my real self when I return home, that’s all that matters.

WHICH ONE DID YOU ENJOY PLAYING MORE?

All of them! That’s why I agreed to play them in the first place…

TRUE, BUT YOU MUST HAVE LIKED ONE MORE THAN THE OTHERS...

Well, I guess Adham in ‘Farah Laila’, because he is very close to my personality. In addition to working with Laila Elwy, such an adorable, sweet, kind, down to earth and professional lady. Also, the always-amazing Khaled Alhagar. The series stood alone when it was aired; it’s a social, romantic drama and I think it’s what people needed at that time. Whoever I met then used to say, “Thank you for doing something I can watch with my kids.” It was not related to the intense environment we were living in. People were nostalgic to the romantic dramas and that’s really good. We tried to stay away from all the political and thriller genres and I think we succeeded to deliver something unique and different.

YOUR FIRST ACTING ROLE WAS IN ‘ALASEFA’. WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM KHALED YOUSSEF?

Working with Khaled Youssef and Youssef Chahin’s crew in general is one of the greatest experiences any actor can gain. It made me believe that I can act, I can do this and it encouraged me to continue. At the beginning I was offered a role in ‘Almaseer’, unfortunately I didn’t do it. Then I had a role in ‘Alasefa’, I also did a small role in ‘Fatah men Israel’. Then I did a movie called ‘Hayat Albotolat’ about October’s War, unfortunately until this moment it has not been screened yet, because of its thick, heavy content. All of this gave me the needed experience to continue.

IT SEEMS LIKE YOU WERE DOING GREAT, THEN WHY DID YOU PAUSE FOR MORE THAN 10 YEARS? As I told you my aim was different, acting was not a priority for me, architecture was my real dream. Now that we are following

the simple acting methods of the European schools, it become closer to me. One of the comments that I usually get from the audience is,“You’re very natural.” It makes me very happy.

HOW DID YOU PREPARE FOR AWNY IN ‘THE BLUE ELEPHANT’?

First Awany is one of those proposals that are hard to refuse. Starting from the director Marwan Hamed, and the superstar Karim Abdelaziz, he’s a dear friend and I am really happy to be a part of his movie. Naturally when I work on a character I tend to build a background, and try to search for the hidden unwritten details, in order to create a different equation to reach the audience with.

WHAT IS YOUR EVALUATION OF THE CINEMA AND VIDEO CONDITIONS NOWADAYS?

I am really optimistic regarding the cinema conditions; it’s going to be stronger than ever. I think we have to look at the bright side, because of what has happened to the cinema now TV productions are in their peak. Now you can see superstars like Adel Imam, Mohamed Saad, karim Abdelaziz and others staring in TV series every year. New writers and directors have the energy and stamina to create new ideas. I think it is a really healthy process, now we have fresh faces and talented people who didn’t use to work for one reason or another, and they are dazzling us with their unique skills.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN THE FUTURE?

I am happy and pleased with where I have reached. The feedbacks I get are really good. Personally I am enjoying what I am doing; I like experimenting inside my field, when you work in a career, it’s important to learn about all its different hooks and paths. The one thing that I still haven’t gotten used to is being a “celebrity” as I am naturally a very shy person.

HOW TO Dress Like FRENCH FASHION STYLE TIPS

F

rench women of a certain age are universally admired for their timeless elegance. Not only do they appear perennially young, but also they remain slim and stylish throughout their lives. It’s this effortlessness, which makes the rest of us feel so inadequate. No wonder a recent survey found that French women look seven years younger than their British counterparts by the time they hit 40. But now it’s time for you too...

52 insight

s s e l e Tim e c n a Eleg

A Parisian

EASY ON THE SHAMPOO

Thick, bouncy, healthy - a Frenchwoman’s hair is never fussy or fixed. It may surprise you to know she will most likely wash it only twice a week. However, coiffeur is one area where Frenchwomen really invest: a good cut and perfect colour count for a lot. -They say they don’t have rules about hair length, but few have tresses below their shoulders. -When it comes to colour, consider the shade of your eyes as well as your skin. Contrary to popular belief, lighter does not necessarily make you look younger. -Rub argan oil into your hair before washing, use only a hazelnut-sized blob of shampoo and sleep in a hair mask monthly.

MONEY SAVING TIPS

- Ditch eye creams. No French girl uses them. -Don’t believe the myth that stronger anti-wrinkle creams are better. Start light and move up the scale as the skin demands. At 40, a woman’s skin does not need an ultra-rich product, but at 60 it might. -Use creams containing vitamin C and Retin-A. -For the body, the French often make their own exfoliators by mixing almond oil with sea salt.

DON’T SKIMP ON YOUR SKIN

Why do French women have such radiant complexions? The answer is inheritance: girls learn good habits from their mothers. From the age of 12, they’re initiated into properly cleansing their skin, and know to start applying anti-ageing creams at 30. Find a dermatologist, an annual appointment is a necessity, not a luxury. You will have a head-to-toe examination looking for melanomas before being given advice about the best products for you. We need a cleanser, a moisturiser for day and another for night. Many doctors even recommended products that have been formulated for babies because they’re gentler on the skin.

COU KEEP YOUR DISCIPLINE

-The right accessories allow a French woman to wear the same little black dress for 25 years. This is also where she can follow trends without breaking the bank: a print purse, zebra ballerina pumps, a snakeskin belt, a silver tote, and masses of beads, whatever. -Her bag and shoes never match. She might choose patent leather for her shoes, suede for her bag. Texture changes everything. -She’ll wear flats in the car and only slip on the stilettos right before her feet hit the pavement. During the day, she loves ballerinas and moccasins. And no Frenchwoman leaves the house in underwear that isn’t colour co-ordinated. Preparation plus discipline is key: but like the French, you should keep that to yourself.

FIRM FOUNDATIONS

A CLOSET OF CLASSICS

FASHION NOT FOOD

Is it true French women never get fat? Sort of, but they do need to lose a few pounds now and again. They are gourmands at heart and might fleetingly consider larger portions of their favourite foods - but then remember they love their favourite clothes even more. -A French woman starts every meal with a soup or salad. And yet: ‘I have never been on a diet’ is a sentiment echoed by all. -Their first line of defence against snacking is hot tea - it gives a minute to think before being overcome by a desire to gorge. -Don’t believe the nonsense that French women don’t exercise. Pilates is a favourite, as are aqua gym classes. Neither are they all chain-smoking - between the ages of 45 and 50, women are quitting in record numbers.

What is it about French women’s outfits that make them appear so chic? It’s down to attitude. While most of us feel uncomfortable being looked at, French women love it. And though they may look a million dollars, they are far from profligate. It’s all about constructing a classic collection. Yes, there may be a few expensive items but they’ll be cherished - and adjusted over the years by a seamstress. -Fit is imperative. As the decades roll by, figure hugging becomes curve skimming and sleeves can be added to hide the upper arms. -French favourites include a black leather pencil skirt, peasant blouses and little black dresses. Stick to a neutral palette - colour appears in accessories. -A French girl can keep wearing the same YSL skirt for 30 years. She makes it work for Paris, the countryside and weddings. She is a devoted markdown shopper and scours the outlets and favourite obscure boutiques. This is the definition of chic - an eclectic mix of High Street and designer, new and old, mixed together to reflect your personality.

A French woman prizes a fresh, unaffected appearance. She will always use foundation - the trick for finding the perfect shade is turning up the palms of your hands. If you have rosy skin, you need a yellow-based foundation; if you have a peachy complexion, opt for a rose-based product. Another lesson is to dab only where you need it and blend away any boundary lines. Afterwards, place your hands on your face and press - your make-up is now perfectly ‘set’. -When it comes to eyes, the rule is one coat of mascara for day, two for evening and lashes brushed before and after application to avoid clumps. -Subtle eyeliner - close to the upper lashes - also lifts the eye. Eyebrows should be well tended to frame the face: apply highlighter under the arch to sculpt. -Our eyes appear closer together with age. A dot of highlighter on the inner corners makes them look further apart, while a dot to the sides of your mouth also lifts a down-turned lip.

FlowerPower

(IN)SIGHT FASHION

They may not be groundbreaking, but they will forever be considered the embodiment of all seasons, familiar yes, but never falling far from extraordinary. You can always count on a full floral fantasy to assure a smooth transition between seasons and this season is no different. Betting on a modern take on florals, the 2014 fashion trends mark the new dawn of femininity.

T

he blooming affair persevered on this year’s runways, taking the form of lightas-air dresses, exquisite gowns, tailored suits, flowy skirts and silky jumpsuits alike. If you’re not keen on approaching a headto-toe floral look, this season offers plenty of equally stunning alternatives. Make sure to find all the inspiration you’ll need. Either reimagined, reinvented, deconstructed or simply painted in unconventional colours, you can always count on the iconic pattern being brought up-to-date. Spanning between the extremes, floral prints of the year go from super-subtle, to super-brassy, appearing modern while looking back at the nineties, clashing with other prints but always emerging as one perfectly polished conjunction.

VIBRANT BLOSSOMS.

Building upon last season’s more eccentric palette of colours, this year is all about vibrant blossoms and unexpected clashes of strong hues. The bolder, the better, and the runways seemed to agree, choosing the vibrant florals to carefully redefine chic dresses, or retro-inspired jumpsuits. How to wear vibrant florals: look out for bold prints in this years key colours – the brighter the better. Cuts that have a daring touch are the ideal accompaniment: think plunging necklines, cinched in waists and thigh slits. 56 insight

F

Perhaps one would think that the floral prints are all about channeling the brighter spirit, often associated with lively patterns and cheerful colours. But if the past seasons brought us anything, is that the dark floral fantasies are equally able to represent summer, particularly when they are impressed on sheer fabrics and polished, yet feminine silhouettes. How to wear dark florals: sleek hair and sporty details are the surprise addition to dark florals, away from the usual romantic associations. This year, try your deeply hued floral prints with easy sandals and minimal makeup.

mismatched florals, you can simply add a chic pair of heels and nothing else. If you want to patch the look together yourself, look for mismatching prints in complimentary colour ways so that they still gel together well.

With their increasing popularity that is sure to take every season by storm, we kind of got used to also expect the unexpected when it comes to the beautiful floral patterns. One aspect that stroke as new and fascinating on this year’s runways, was the clash of floral prints used to define the same garment, often a dress, that was being built from various patterns sewn together. How to wear clashing florals: recognise that you don’t need anything else to make a patchwork of prints a statement. With the right dress featuring

Harsh masculine lines, splendid floral prints: apparently they have little in common, but their coming together lead to one of the most beautiful examples of smart contrasts to have walked the runways. Channeling the best of two worlds, the floral suits are ready to infuse some strength into what is the year’s signature feminine splendor. How to wear floral suiting: a suit in full pattern is bold in of itself, so go all out rather than try and tone it down. Look for sharp cuts, high shine fabrics, and bold prints. Relaxed pants make the look twice as effortless this year.

Designers didn’t seem able to escape the artistic influence of the year , which resulted in a myriad of brush stroke printed florals adorning everything in between ladylike dresses and lightweight outerwear. Exquisite and highly imaginative, these patterns hold onto uniqueness, encouraging the refined take on the perennial trend.

In other words: You’ve fallen off on your own to-do list without even realizing it.

You Are in Someone Else’s Traffic Jam

Because you offered to pick up your sister’s dry-cleaning on the way to dropping off your best friend at the airport, which took you across town and over the railroad tracks, you’re now sitting between exits 17 and 18 on a stretch of highway, far, far, far from your own life. New rule: one favour per day. Which is enough for you to help the people you love (and to make you feel good), but not so much that you spend your days reading the bumper stickers of strangers behind whose cars you should have never been.

Your Last 15 Bank Transactions Have Been for Other People

The college-fund contribution for your niece. The family’s health insurance. Your mom’s kitchen cabinets. Lunch for your co-worker. The baby shower gift for Sukie. That cute ring for your BFF who just got dumped. The tennis shoes, ice skates, violin tuner, chapter book, Pokemon cards, stuffed duck, purple goo that is somehow branded as a toy, Rainbow Loom and Frozen DVD that your kids could not survive another day without. The way life is, you may have to spend more on others than on yourself; but take 10 dollars in cash, put your name on it—physically, in ball-point pen—and stuff it in your desk drawer. Repeat each time you realize you’ve taken care of everyone but yourself until you have 100 dollars, then deeply consider ideas on which to spend it (running shoes, anybody?)

Your Partner Sends You Expensive Red Roses on Valentine’s Day or Takes You for a Fancy French Meal

In a recent study, 28 percent of women wanted to travel as a present—the most popular gift—but 45 percent of them got flowers and another 41 percent dinner. This same imbalance may appear in other areas—you have a dog for the kids, though you love cats; you got a bonus week off of work, when you really want a promotion. How is it that your life is not aligned with your real desires? The first step may be to take a few minutes to remember those desires...then, to go communicate them to the world.

You Wear a Ponytail Every Day of Week, Including Saturday

Because you don’t want to mess up your hair while you pick up the laundry on the floor, race around to make everyone breakfast and corral the dog into his crate. So, you save the styling for the last 15 minutes, right before you leave the house. Except that there is no last 15 minutes, ever; those minutes are like the shimmering mirage of water at the far end of the desert, which you run to, flat iron and styling gloss in hand, only to see them vanish the minute you arrive at the mirror. Hence, your ponytailitis. one solution? Hair that does itself overnight while you sleep.

Your Hair Mysteriously Seems to Have Stopped Growing...

Which brings up the three most sleep-killing questions in the world—Am I Pregnant? Do I Have Cancer? Did I Get the Family Bald Gene? But don’t worry, scientifically speaking, this can happen when, “dirt and oil accumulate on your scalp and hair follicles, causing inflammation and irritation.” In other words, your hair growth has stunted from a lack of washing. Prescription: lather, rinse, and repeat at least once a week.

A Year Has Gone By and You Haven’t Asked for a Raise

Ask (right now). It may not feel like it, but statistically speaking, the economy is better now than it was a few years ago, so now may be the time to make your case. But, in a way that emphasizes the benefit to your company.

You Have Eaten Leftovers Three Times This Week

Nobody in the family likes leftovers, but that can be misread as, “No one likes leftovers except you, who does like them.” Being a responsible citizen of the world, you can’t stand to throw out food. Here’s what you need: toss the massive amount of grated cheese, which seems to be the number one ingredient for disguising leftovers, and choose freshly made dinners and buy that club sandwich for lunch.

You Find Yourself Proudly Thinking, “I Just Burned 26 Calories,” After Washing the Dishes (or Stirring Cookie Batter)

While the claim may be true, it also implies that you are not working out, and that you are telling yourself that taking care of the house and the other people who live there is also taking care of yourself. You have time for a 45-minute spin class four times a week... exactly once a year. For the other weeks, you can get it done in seven minutes.

You Use Your Husband’s Special Sensitive-Gum Toothpaste

Even though your gums are healthy and hardy—save for when you use his toothpaste and feel a weird, sparkly tingle throughout your mouth. This also applies to using your roommate’s dandruff-fighting conditioner (when you don’t have dandruff). Unlike other life challenges—i.e., saving for retirement, getting the garbage disposal fixed—which may require MIT-level solutions, this one’s easy: a trip to the drugstore for over-the-counter products that don’t cure what doesn’t ail you—such as plain old toothpaste.

BAD FOOD CAN KILL YOU JUST LIKE NO FOOD CAN, IT JUST TAKES LONGER he thing is, bad food can kill you just like no food can—it just takes longer. It creeps up on us in the form of obesity, cancer, and heart disease, and also as degraded soil, a compromised environment, and weakened local agriculture. There is a solution to this very complex and far-reaching problem: you. By making small changes to your own diet, you can not only improve your health but also become part of the collective force needed to re-create a healthy food system that feeds the world well.

4

The next time you host family or friends, serve them a grass-fed burger on a whole-grain bun along with a plateful of local vegetables. Let them see first-hand that eating in a way that changes the food system for the better can be delicious—and fun.

REMOVE HIDDEN CORN FROM YOUR DIET

It goes well beyond high-fructose corn syrup—processed corn ingredients include dextrose, corn syrup solids, and corn-based sweeteners, as well as meat, milk, and dairy from corn-fed cattle. Nixing those products from your kitchen may encourage manufacturers to find healthier alternatives, and it’s also a great way to remove junk foods from your cabinets and make room in your wallet and home for natural, whole foods. 60 insight

5

CHOOSE PROCESSED FOODS WISELY

The further food is from its natural state, the less nutritious it’s likely to be. You don’t have to make everything from scratch, but seek out lightly processed foods with a short list of ingredients (ones you can pronounce). Bread should contain flour, yeast, and salt, not diglycerides and calcium propionate.

6

RETHINK THE IDEA THAT HEALTHY FOOD IS TOO COSTLY

GET IN THE KITCHEN AND MAKE LOTS OF “SLOW FOOD”

Why not reap the benefits of investing money in good food instead of on doctors’ bills, meds, and bigger clothes? Think of mealtimes as an investment in your physical and mental health, and adjust your grocery budget accordingly.

Ch ices 7 TRADE FAST FOOD FOR SLOW FOOD

That will change your Life

9

Eating in fast-food restaurants just twice a week was found to increase the risk for coronary heart disease by a staggering 56%. Here’s one possible solution: Get in the kitchen and make lots of “slow food”—a platter of oven-roasted vegetables, a big pot of chili, a vat of steel-cut oatmeal with dried fruit—one day a week. That way, you’ll always have a fridge full of healthful options to choose from when your busy schedule tempts you to turn to the drive-thru. Make good food the easy food.

8

GROW

SOMETHING EDIBLE City dwellers can plant herbs in pots on a windowsill. Suburbanites can cultivate garlic and asparagus, a perennial vegetable that keeps producing for decades. Encourage your kids, neighbors, and friends to do the same.

GO FOR QUALITY OVER QUANTITY

If we rethink what a healthy “full” plate looks like (e.g., a portion of meat that’s no larger than the palm of your hand), we can afford grass-fed steak instead of the cheaper, industrially produced meat. Right now, we have unprecedented obesity but also unprecedented waste, partly because we’re buying supersize deals that are either going to our waists or into the trash. We can shave pounds and save dollars by buying (and eating) smaller portions of high-quality food.

Ingredients •1 cup rolled oats (preferably not instant oats) •1 1/2 cup crispy rice cereal •3 tsps flour (glutenfree flour will work) •1/2 cup pumpkin seeds •1/2 cup roughly chopped pecans •1/2 cup dried unsweetened coconut

Chicken Ceaser Wrap

1. Place the first 3 ingredients in a bowl and stir to combine. 2. Place 1/2 of the mixture on the spinach wrap and top with 1/2 of the lettuce. 3. Wrap the sandwich, cut in half and serve.

Of course, happy people are doing something they find meaningful. But what else makes them so darn positive?

They’re Always In Countdown Time

The best part about vacation may be...the anticipation. Research finds that the weeks leading up to a break yield even more bliss than the afterglow of one. This may explain why your happiest colleagues plan miniholidays every three to four months (instead of, say, one long vacation in August) giving themselves more escapes to look forward to throughout the year. By vacationing at regular intervals, they also stop the stress cycle more frequently, making them more resilient. Bonus: Three-day breaks don’t leave your seat vacant for long.

They’re giving their cubicle a makeover.

They’re always giving a minute— or 10 —away.

They have 230 emails, 23 voicemails and 13 items on their priority to-do list. So when the junior associate asks for help with her report, what do they say? “Sure.” Because—conscious of it or not—offering to lend a hand to others at work actually makes you happier, as long as you’re not giving so much time away that you can’t complete your own work. Work altruists are 10 times more likely to be motivated at work, no surprise; they’re likelier to get promoted, too.

They’re not doing “salary math.”

They roll out bamboo mats...grow wisteria... and hang princess wallpaper with (removable) starch paste. It turns out that a portion of workplace happiness depends on the freedom to personalize your surroundings. Office workers were not only more upbeat and motivated when they decorated their own workspaces, but—heads up, bosses—32% more productive than in the usual grayish setting.

When people break down their earnings by the hour, they derive less happiness from pleasurable experiences. Participants reported that even pastimes like browsing the web or listening to music weren’t as enjoyable after thinking about their hourly wage. Subconsciously, it’s hard to shake the feeling that any time not getting paid is wasted. And while people work more when they are motivated by thoughts of money, they don’t want to socialize as much—which puts a damper on happiness.

They’re exercising their “aerobics instructor” face.

They never think about their Wheaties.

A powerful way to ensure that you come across as positive is to take a close look at the person talking with you, because we mirror one another unconsciously. Is her expression anxious? Disengaged? Tired? So you change your own face and see if the other person follows the new script.

“You’ll see I wear only gray or blue suits,” President Obama told Vanity Fair writer Michael Lewis. “I don’t want to make decisions about what I’m eating or wearing. Because I have too many other decisions to make.” Multiple studies confirm: To preserve stamina, judgment, and emotional selfcontrol by extension, happiness—reduce the number of choices you need to make every day, because even little ones sap your strength. So, experiment. No more dithering about where to meet, what to wear or eat or any other non-vital choice—especially when the pressure’s on. Develop habits or decide the night before. Then see if you don’t have a little more energy and willpower to keep that aerobics-instructor smile on your face.

of time has passed. The growth phase is largely determined by genetics and typically lasts between two and six years.

Many of us want nothing more than long, healthy hair, which is why it’s so frustrating when it just refuses to grow! Even more annoying, though, is that it stays the same length, and yet we still see our roots emerge when it’s time to color our hair. Our hair may be growing, but where is it going? Why isn’t it getting any longer? Read on below to hear what the experts have to say.

Are you getting trims often enough?

Some women try to hang on to as much length as possible by avoiding haircuts, and yet they gain no length. We all have a maximum length our hair can reach according to our current regime. This is where your ends simply begin to break instead of continuing to remain strong and healthy. Until you change your existing habits and products used on your hair, nothing will change about your hair. Trim the split ends, use thermal protection and safe thermal tools, and use the right hair mask and treatment to nourish your hair, because clearly you’ve plateaued and nothing will change unless you make some changes yourself!

Genetics

Whether we have pinpointed it or not, we all have an individual hair cycle growth phase in which the hair has potential to reach its longest. This is the maximum length that hair could possibly reach without being cut or damaged. This does not mean that hair always stops growing once it reaches a specific length, but once a certain amount 66 insight

Age

Aging brings with it a host of life complications, not the least of all is our hair. As we get older, chances are our hair is weaker. Years of heat styling and bleaching can build up to create major damage. Studies have shown that the biology of hair can change, and the growth stage may shorten. This means that hair could begin shedding faster, making it appear thinner and shorter. For instance, if you have a five-year growing period, a single strand of hair will continue growing for five years before it will go into ‘resting’ phase. However, as we get older, the growing phase is known to shorten, meaning hair will grow for less time before it enters the resting phase and ultimately sheds to make room for new (short) strands. Additionally, oil production on the scalp often begins to slow down after age 45, so hair may be less hydrated and appear coarser, making it more susceptible to damage and breakage.

Breakage

!

Sorry to break it to you all: Your hair may appear to be not growing, but in reality, it could be breaking once it reaches a certain length. Showering, brushing, styling, and bleaching hair can all lead to major split ends and breakage. Handling hair too roughly, using uncovered hair elastics, and brushing too often can cause dryness and brittleness. Bleaching and chemical processes can cause hair to be over processed and lose elasticity and moisture. Since hair

grows about half an inch each month, if it is continuing to break off at about that same rate, you will see little to no growth.

See Your Doctor

When hair appears to stop growing it can be extremely stressful. Make sure to pay a regular visit to the doctor to rule out allergies, dermatitis, hormonal disorders such as hyper thyroid, and general health issues. The most common cause of hair thinning in women is a hereditary condition called androgenetic alopecia or female-pattern baldness. It is called a ‘pattern’ as this type of hair thinning develops in patterns from the interaction between genetics and hormonal factors when certain sex hormones trigger a particular pattern of permanent hair thinning in genetically susceptible people. This results in hair changing its characteristics. It grows slower and becomes drier and more dull/brittle as each strand becomes thinner and thinner.

Diet

Diet and vitamin deficiencies can spell serious hair drama. It is important to have the proper levels of ferritin, zinc, and vitamin B12 to maintain desirable hair length and quality. Adequate iron and protein are necessary for hair strength and to prevent brittleness and breakage. A lack of ferritin can cause hair to move out of its growing phase and to shed too quickly. An overactive or underactive thyroid has also been shown to have an effect on hair growth.

Skin Conditions of the Scalp

A more serious and rare issue, but an unhealthy scalp can cause inflammation that makes it difficult for hair to grow. Skin conditions that lead to hair loss and lack of growth include seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff), psoriasis, and fungal infections such as ringworm.

Change Your Hair Routine

Stack the odds in your favour by switching up your hair care for the better. Decrease the chemicals and heat. Try to not make it worse by styling, coloring, or bleaching, and go easy on the hair dryer and flat iron.

Organize Your Products

Get the Excess Air Out of Your Bottles

Keep Like Items Together

Store Fragile Bottles Inside Your Sneakers

First of all, no, you don’t need to take everything with you. Wherever possible, opt for travel-size containers of things like shampoo and perfume, and, once you have everything together, separate out the items that are fragile (glassware, powder compacts) or at risk of leakage (foundation, moisturizer).

Don’t mix your makeup with your toothbrush, or your moisturizer with your shampoo.

Invest in Small, Refillable Plastic Bottles

Really passionate about products that don’t exactly offer “travel-size” versions? Make your own. It will make all the difference in both packing and your happiness on your trip.

Put Your Daily Essentials in Your CarryOn

Remember, you’re allowed to take that one-quart re-sealable bag with you on the plane, so take the products you use on the regular—concealer, mascara, moisturizer, lip balm, gloss—and put those in a re-sealable bag for your carry-on. That way, you’ve got your go-to products handy if you want to freshen up when you get off the plane or—worst case scenario—your bag gets lost.

You know how your ears pop on a plane because of the pressure? Well, air pressure changes can really wreak havoc on sealed bottles with air trapped inside of them, too. To avoid explosion risks, give your bottles a little extra squeeze to get any excess air out before you pack them—then seal them up tight.

Sneakers are designed to cushion your feet while you run, so they’re well equipped to protect really fragile items like perfume or foundation bottles while you travel. (Pro tip: Not packing sneakers? Wrap each fragile item inside a pair of rolled socks.)

Double-Seal Your Bottles

Of course, you should make sure that any and all caps are screwed on tightly, but as an added layer of protection, try wrapping your products in a plastic cling wrap—paying special attention to the cap area—before packing it up. Looking to be extra-extra safe? Try duct tape around any pop-top openings or bottle caps. (Pro tip: Pay extra attention to products like foundation, tinted moisturizer, and self-tanner that have a higher chance of staining your clothing.)

Don’t Neglect Your Powders!

Compacts with powders—like eyeshadow or blush—can break into pieces if they’re crushed or dropped. Protect these by surrounding them with sponges or tissue, and don’t put them at the bottom of your bag.

Embrace Re-sealable

Bags

Next time you hit the grocery store, stock up on those re-sealable bags so you’re not left packing in a hurry and grabbing some rink-a-dink plastic grocery bag that you stuff all your products into. Re-sealable bags are the rear guard of your army of beauty product protection: If the worst happens and something spills, at least these bags will keep it from getting on any of your clothing. (Pro tip: If you have multiple items that are giving you heart palpitations when it comes to possible spillage, put those in a separate bag from all your other products so there’s less clean-up later in case the worst occurs.)

MY PERSONAL MOTTO IS “STOP DIETING AND START NOURISHING ” Pack Everything in the Middle of Your Suitcase

We know it’s easy to forget about your cosmetics until the end of your packing, but make sure to plan ahead and put those resealed bags of wellwrapped beauty products in the middle of your suitcase. If possible, surround them with items like tees and sweatshirts—items that are nice and cushioned. Never put something that you’d be devastated to see stained right next to your beauty products.

And Do’s

Don’ts University Crush WHEN TALKING

TO YOUR Do: It’s college, so unless your professor makes a seating chart where boys and girls are separated, sit where you WANT to sit. You don’t owe anything to that desk you chose on day one. Sit next to the person you want to be “lab” partners with and you’re guaranteed some sort of interaction. Don’t: Get caught stalking his Facebook profile in a large lecture. Facebook stalking can be fun and sometimes even necessary (when you do it in the comforts of your own home), but that point when you get bored during lecture is not the time to do it. You never know who’s sitting near you and spying on your screen. Do: Strike up conversation about anything (class, homework, your school, the weather, etc.), it doesn’t matter what you say, well, just don’t confess some weird fetish, as long as you’re making progress. And if you don’t get lucky enough to sit near them, talk to them during a break, before or after class, on the stairs, in the hall, in an elevator, at the vending machine, during a final – wherever – time is precious! Don’t: Show him your Pinterest wedding board. Guys already hate Pinterest enough, and when you combine it with a discussion of your future marriage and children, he will want to run away and never talk to you again. Think of how you would feel if he made you sit through his entire fantasy football draft. If you make this terrible mistake of showing him the cake, napkins, and flowers that will be at your wedding, you should probably start making a future cat lady Pinterest board. Do: Get a phone number, email or Facebook contact so that way in case you miss class, you have a totally reasonable excuse to contact him or her, and graduate that conversation into their hobbies and favorite bands. What? It’s not like you weren’t getting at that anyway? Don’t: Text him 5 minutes after he gives you his number. And when he doesn’t answer, you text him again and again and again.

74 insight

“Where are you? Want to hang out? Come get me. Hello. Where are you? Why are you ignoring me?” He’s ignoring you because you’re acting like a crazy person. If he doesn’t answer you the first five times, he’s not going to answer you the sixth time either. No matter how hard you want to try again, remember that double (and triple, and quadruple) texting is a big no-no. Do: Realize you’re “missing notes.” Aka, you’re not missing notes BUT this is pretty much a guaranteed access into talking to that person. When you’re “done with them,” tell them if they ever need them too, you’re the person to go to. Don’t: Act stupid about things you’re smart about. Don’t pull a Cady from Mean Girls type of thing and act stupid about something you’re definitely not stupid about just to start a convo. First of all, people can usually tell when someone is being genuine and if he thinks you’re being fake, he’s not going to be into it. Second of all, if he catches you in your lie, then you are going to look stupid. You also shouldn’t try to pretend you’re into something you’re not just to talk to him. Find a topic you feel comfortable discussing and go from there. Do: Get excited about study groups. Make them. Become the best study group coordinator in your class. If you’re too freaked out to ask them for notes yet, create this group scenario and make it a point to sit next to them when everyone meets up. Don’t: Flirt with other guys, while he’s around. You’re not technically dating so it’s okay to see what other options are around, but try to be discreet about it. If you have any idea that he might show up where you are, keep your flirting to a minimum. Kissing another guy right in front of him might be the behavior of choice for a jealous girlfriend, but not for a girl like you who is trying to make him into your boyfriend. Do: Accidentally” bump into them at the gym/after class/at their work. Yes, this sounds like a little bit of stalking, but obviously if you

somehow figure out part of their schedule, you should use that to your advantage and make small talk with them. “Ohhhh I didn’t know you worked here!…Ohhhh what class did you just get out of?…..Ohhhh how often do you come to the gym?” IT WORKS PEOPLE. Don’t: Find out his class schedule and dress up really cute, always making sure you take the same route as he does. If you can pull this off unnoticed, good for you. But chances are he will start to notice a shadow in his path. This is when things could get weird. When he finds out this shadowy figure is you, he will catch on and tell his friends about the creepy girl who is always following him. He will then change his route and avoid you in any way possible. The worst is when you smile and wave and he doesn’t even notice or acknowledge you. Stop chasing your crush and instead eye the hotties who walk by you every day. Do: Ask more questions. Some people have a tendency to dominate the conversation (on accident) or ask too many close-ended questions (those that only have 2 answer possibilities.) If you’re trying to get to know someone, make sure the conversation is reciprocal. Don’t: Change your Facebook status to “in a relationship” after a week of talking to him. You think guys move too fast? You don’t want to be the one to jump the gun before you’ve even gone on a real date (and no, randomly falling into each other at the bar does not count). In his eyes, you might be just another booty call. He might even think your new relationship is with another guy, in which case he will probably just stop returning your calls. When people start liking your new relationship status, the damage will already be done. Save yourself the embarrassment and change your

That just makes you look super weird, so pick one or the other. Start off slow… Don’t: Like every single one of his profile pics. Not only will he see how obsessed you are, but so will his 1,052 friends. It’s one thing to stalk him in private, but another to publicly display your interest in him. Do yourself and everyone else a favor and hide him from your newsfeed. When you can’t see his new shirtless pic, you won’t be tempted to keep overliking (or continue to embarrass yourself). Do: Use caffeine to your advantage. As in, offer to get them a coffee sometime or grab one WITH them. 99.9% of all college students need caffeine at least a couple times a week to keep them going. Don’t: Ask him to meet your parents before you are even official. The whole “meet the parents” thing is already awkward enough. It’s something that should be saved for longer down the road—think after numerous dates, hook-ups, and PDAs. Ask him to meet your friends first. If he gets freaked out by this, do not even think about inviting him to your cousin’s first birthday party. Do: Get mutual connections. Whether it’s

Don’t

relationship status in real life before you do it on the Internet. Do: Close the awkward silence gap. If you’re in the middle of a conversation and all the sudden silence happens, don’t just sit on it. End the silence by saying something like “Well, I’m happy to have one class down for the day…” or “It’s so nice outside today, it just puts me in a better mood!” Just say something that can automatically agree with that will keep conversation flowing, and try really hard to keep your “silence statements” positive! Don’t: Use boring small talk. Please try to think of something else to say other than, “Wow, it’s cold out there, huh?” I know this is an easy way to start talking, but it’s just kind of boring and honestly not very memorable. Try to come up with something more creative and use the weather as a last resort. Do: Refrain from following them every social media site they’re apart of. I wouldn’t be so naive as to think I’m the only one who “creeps” on people, but try really hard not to get too hardcore with it when it comes to someone you’re interested in. Just because they have a Twitter/Instagram/Facebook/ Tumblr does not mean you should automatically add/follow them on every single one.

“!

Text him 5 minutes after he gives you his number

a friend, hobby, organization, etc. Because if you don’t have something major in common in college, it probably won’t go anywhere fast. If you have one of the types of mutual connections, you’ll automatically spend some time together outside of class! Don’t: Start giving his best girl friend a dirty look every time you see her. Calm down, girlfriend, there’s more than enough of him to go around. Just because she’s a girl doesn’t mean she’s hooking up with him. It sucks that she’s one of the prettiest girls on campus and knows how to work a crowd, but don’t be intimidated by this. If you give her a dirty look, she’ll most likely relay this message to your crush, and next time you run into him on campus you’ll be the one getting a dirty look. Make peace with his best girl friend any way you can. Do the whole Mean Girls thing and be “frenemies” with her if you have to... it’s better than nothing.

THE ART KEEPER Early Life

Painter, sculptor, architect and poet Michelangelo was born on March 6, 1475, in Caprese, Italy to a family of moderate means in the banking business. His father, Leonardo di Buonarrota Simoni, was briefly serving as a magistrate in the small village when he recorded the birth of his second of five sons with his wife, Francesca Neri, but they returned to Florence when Michelangelo was still an infant. Due to his mother’s illness, however, Michelangelo was placed with a family of stonecutters. Michelangelo’s father realized early on that his son had no interest in the family financial business, so agreed to apprentice him, at the age of 13, to the fashionable Florentine painter’s workshop. There, Michelangelo was exposed to the technique of fresco. Michelangelo had spent only a year at the workshop when an extraordinary opportunity opened to him: At the recommendation of Ghirlandaio, he moved into the palace of Florentine ruler Lorenzo the Magnificent, of the powerful Medici family, to study classical sculpture in the Medici gardens. This was a fertile time for Michelangelo; that permitted him access to the social elite of Florence—allowing him to study under the respected sculptor Bertoldo di Giovanni and exposing him to prominent poets, scholars and learned Humanists. He also obtained special permission from the Catholic Church to study cadavers for insight into anatomy, though exposure to corpses had an adverse effect on his health. These combined influences laid the groundwork for what would become Michelangelo’s distinctive style: a muscular precision and reality combined with an almost lyrical beauty. Two relief sculptures that survive, “Battle of the Centaurs” and “Madonna Seated on a Step,” are testaments to his unique talent at the tender age of 16.

Death& Legacy Following a brief illness, Michelangelo died on February 18, 1564—just weeks before his 89th birthday—at his home in Macel de’Corvi, Rome. A nephew bore his body back to Florence, where he was revered by the public as the “father and master of all the arts” and was laid to rest at the Basilica di Santa Croce—his chosen place of burial.

Interesting Facts -Unlike many artists, Michelangelo achieved fame and wealth during his lifetime. He also had the peculiar distinction of living to see the publication of two biographies about his life (written by Giorgio Vasari and Ascanio Condivi). -Today, the “Pieta” remains an incredibly revered work, Michelangelo was just 25 years old at the time he worked on it. Legend has it that he overheard pilgrims attribute the work to another sculptor, so he boldly carved his signature in the sash across Mary’s chest. It is the only work to bear his name. -Although he never married, Michelangelo was devoted to a pious and noble widow named Vittoria Colonna, the subject and recipient of many of his more than 300 poems and sonnets. Their friendship remained a great solace to Michelangelo until Colonna’s death in 1547. -In his youth, Michelangelo had taunted a fellow student, and received a blow on the nose that disfigured him for life. Over the years, he suffered increasing infirmities from the rigors of his work; in one of his poems, he documented the tremendous physical strain that he endured by painting the Sistine Chapel ceiling. 76 insight

BOOKS

Astonish Me is the irresistible story of Joan, a young American dancer who helps a Soviet ballet star, the great Arslan Rusakov. A flash of fame and a passionate love affair follow, but Joan knows that, onstage and off, she is destined to remain in the background. She will never possess Arslan, and she will never be a prima ballerina. She quits ballet, marries a good man, and settles in California with him and their son, Harry. But, Joan comes to understand that ballet isn’t finished with her yet, for there is no mistaking that Harry is a prodigy. Through Harry, Joan is pulled back into dangerous secrets, and back, inevitably, to Arslan.

ADVERTISING

EXTREME

For any given product or service, there are a million different ways to advertise its benefits and offerings. The tricky part, however, is matching a brand’s intended message with a creative, eye-catching execution that is both interesting and memorable to the consumer. While most companies still struggle to find new, innovative ways to utilize billboards to reach their target audience, some companies have already begun thinking outside the box.

NATIONWIDE INSURANCE

This one-of-a-kind billboard is easily the best. Nationwide Insurance took a fictional paint company’s billboard and turned it into a messy disaster in the parking lot below. Giant globs of yellow paint poured down the side of building, creating a massive puddle on and around the cars parked underneath.

ESKOM ENERGY

A nice billboard created asking consumers and businesses to conserve energy and stop unnecessary power usage. Just a really clever and smart way of utilizing an ad’s medium. It makes you think about why all the lights are not turned on until you read the caption. Looks great at night, but we assume it would be kind of confusing during the day.

SILBERMAN’S FITNESS CENTER

No fancy cut-outs, bright colors, or other bells-andwhistles here. Just a simple, straightforward ad telling you maybe it’s time to put down that cheeseburger and TV remote, and hit the gym using clever placement and construction. Either that, or the workers putting together the billboard got lazy and just left us with a half-assed, tilted sign.

ADIDAS SAMBA GARDEN BILLBOARD What was adidas trying to say with this unconventional billboard? Were they making an effort to go “green” and be more environmentally conscious? Or were they trying to beautify the area in which this advertisement was found? Most likely, adidas was just trying to create a unique, attention-grabbing ad that would sell some more Sambas to both committed soccer enthusiasts and ironic hipsters (since the plants were made from plastic). Either way, we applaud and appreciate adidas’s effort to think outside the box and create something that doesn’t feature in-yourface branding.

HUBBA BUBBA BUBBLEGUM

Hubba Bubba uses extraordinary ads to get their point across. This particular billboard depicts the aftermath of a bubble blown too big. Besides making a mess of the kid’s face, the gum also seems to have gotten on the surrounding trees and environment. Even the kid pictured in the ad doesn’t seem to be too happy with his current predicament.

TYLENOL

There are many subtle ways to represent the pain of a headache in a billboard. However, “subtle” never got anyone anywhere. For this Tylenol ad, some creative advertisers thought it would be best to take a 2400 lb wrecking ball and slam it straight through the forehead of one unlucky headache sufferer. I think we get the message now.

“BELT UP” DRIVER SAFETY This straightforward ad reminding passengers to buckle up in the backseat. The message on this one is clear, put on your seat belt or get launched clear across like a rag doll.

CINGULAR This innovative billboard was created for the cell phone provider Cingular. Not only does the ad utilize bright, easy-to-read colors and copy, the play on words involving “dropped” calls really makes this ad unique. The overall concept makes the billboard interesting to look at and more importantly, clearly conveys the intended message.

BLOOM SUPERMARKET JUMBO MUFFINS

Bloom sells several signature products including the “Bloomberry” jumbo muffins pictured above. For this elaborate advertising campaign, a strategically placed “Car for Sale” was parked underneath the giant billboard. A week after the ad went up, a muffin was made to look like it fell, crushing the car underneath.

BIC RAZORS

Short, simple, and straight to the point. The ad shows a giant razor shaving a path in the grass leading up to a white billboard that features a Bic logo and acts as a nice backdrop to the advertisement. The question is, who’s the unlucky sap that has to keep the grass trimmed constantly?

Horoscope Ruling Planet: Mercury Symbol: The Virgin Element: Earth Lucky Stone: Sapphire Famous Virgos: Beyonce Knowles, Michael Jackson, Adam Sandler, and Pink

Is something unusual, undefined, and unexpected occurring? It’s good to seek a professional to ease the symptoms. This will help the changes you’re also experiencing in the home. Someone you care about from a group can help. They are intelligent and will soothe your fears. Call upon them.

Ruling Planet: Venus Symbol: The Scalees Element: Air Lucky Stone: Opals Famous Libras: Kim Kardashian, Zac Efron, Bruno Mars, and Will Smith

Ruling Planet: Pluto Symbol: The Scorpion Element: Water Lucky Stone: Topaz Famous Scorpios: Katy Perry, Drake, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Emma Stone

Working with others can be bad. The day-to-day situation of relentless working with relentless workers could prove to be just too much. Accomplish as much as you can at home, take long walks in twilight, and know that eventually a brilliance will befall you. Like an unexpected star.

You’ll move back and forth from the business world to groups of friends trying to be social and yet professionally responsible. You’ll have to try to balance both. What you’re attempting to do is unite all the facets of your life and unite others too. This is a good humanitarian intention.

VIRGO LIBRA SCORPIO Ruling Planet: Jupiter Symbol: The Archer Element: Fire Lucky Stone: Turquoise Famous Sagittarius: Miley Cyrus, Jay Z, Taylor Swift, and Brad Pitt

Ruling Planet: Saturn Symbol: The Goat Element: Earth Lucky Stone: Garnet Famous Capricorns: Elvis Presely, Zayn Malik, Betty White, and Liam Hemsworth

Ruling Planet: Uranus Symbol: The Water Bearer Element: Air Lucky Stone: Amethyst Famous Aquarius: Justin Timberlake, Shakira, Jordon, and Jennifer Aniston

This Month, you’ll be handling multiple calls, emails, technical situations, businesses deals, contracts, and corporate logos. As each message seems to blur into the next, take the time to walk a bit, talk a bit less, and synthesize what you’re learning here.

Don’t doubt yourself or your dreams or wishes for successful group endeavours. Recapitulate and redefine your goals and then refine them. You’re moving into a new direction for greater freedom. In love matters, you’ll find yourself selfless. This is good, charitable, and gratifying. If unresolved situations surface, work with them. The rewards are spiritual.

The question for some is individual freedom (where is it?) in relation to the group (what group?). For others a question concerning commitment occurs. What we’re discussing here is the abstract (freedom) vs. practicality (are you in the game or not?). This is a psychological struggle. What’s needed is massive communication. Can you do that?

The past shows up and presents you with pictures and feelings that cause grief. Each memory has a message that has bearing on the future. You’ve become your past, which makes you very sensitive to your previous unskilful ways. Hold these thoughts close, allow them to gather strength, to gestate, and offer your insights to the world.

Something someone says to you, a lover, a child, a friend, even a group, has a piece of the truth in it. At first you may not understand. You might even be upset or irritated. Set yourself to a creative task, ponder their words, and ask for goodwill. Give it too.

Unusual things occur both at home and with work. These may create frustration, even arguments that distort your usual placid demeanour. Walking will disperse some of the contained energy. Walking with a friend is even better in neighbourhoods neither of you know about.

PISCES ARIES TAURUS Ruling Planet: Mercury Symbol: The Twins Element: Air Lucky Stone: Aquamarine Famous Gemini: Johnny Depp, Marilyn Monroe, Morgan Freeman, and Angelina Jolie Constant thoughts of travel, or perhaps a compelling need to leave the reality you’re in, impels you to change something, seek the unusual and bring it home, and/or bring a new level of thought to a limited belief. Communication of the esoteric type will save you.

Ruling Planet: The Moon Symbol: The Cran Element: Water Lucky Stone: Moonstone Famous Cancers: Selena Gomez, Lionel Messi, Ariana Grande, and Tom Cruise First you’ll chat about money and resources and then you’ll just chat. Trying to make any sense, especially where your resources are going, may be impossible. The situation is such that you’ll have to delve into another’s state of finances to understand your own.

Ruling Planet: Sun Symbol: The Lion Element: Fire Lucky Stone: Peridot Famous Leos: Barack Obama, Jennifer Lawrence, Jennifer Lopez, and Demi Lovato The nine tests begin in earnest for all Leos. Being aware of them provides you with knowledge, preparation, and reality. Look for three physical tests, three emotional tests, and three mental tests. Their purpose is to see what next level of spiritual development you are ready for. There is no failure. Just information. Act with integrity in all endeavors.
