10 8 Summer Steps For Healthy Living

86 Match Fit

DO YOU DRESS 1- YOUR HEMLINE PHILOSOPHY MOST MATCHES THE FOLLOWING: a-Show your legs in your 20’s and as you approach your 40’s and beyond, stay safely at the knee or below. b-I follow fashion first and just as hemlines rise and fall on the runways, so do my skirt lengths. c-The shorter the better—I consider anything else frumpy.

2- THIGH-HIGH BOOTS ARE: a-Cool for a twenty something’s night out, chic with jeans in your 30’s and stored away come forty. b-If Céline does a pair all is fair game. c-A boot collection staple.

3- A PANTSUIT SUIT IS: a-Old-fashioned in your 20’s, but has a growing style appeal as time goes on. b-Slouchy and louche in silhouette this season. c-Not in my sartorial vocabulary.

YOUR AGE

?

8- HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT PEARLS?

a-The modern day options look so cool and fresh, but a singular strand is something to wear for a lifetime. b-Delfina Delettrez’s singular pearl earring is on my wish list. c-Something my grandmother would wear.

9- HOW OFTEN DO YOU PURGE YOUR CLOSET? a-Every couple of years I remove pieces that feel like the younger version of myself to make room for more sophisticated takes. b-Every season, naturally. c-Never, I will wear what I love for a lifetime.

10- THE STYLE ICON THAT HAS DRESSING FOR HER AGE DOWN IS: a-Julianne Moore, she has evolved her style with perfection. b-Gwyneth Paltrow, she is always wearing the next hot trend. c-The fearless Naomi Campbell always looks fierce.

4- YOUR CLOSET’S COLOR THEORY WOULD BEST BE DESCRIBED AS: a-60/40 color and neutrals post-college and 30/70 color and neutrals by the time you are forty. b-Graphic impact with a touch of the season’s hottest hue. c-ROYGBIV.

5- CROP TOPS AND SHORTS ARE: a-A do till you are 35, then a firm don’t. b-Spring season considerations, especially leather iterations of the top and wide-leg culottes. c-Spring season must-haves.

6- THE RED CARPET TREND OF SHEER SKIRTS HAS YOU: a-Reaching for tights—no matter your age. b-Bowing down to Givenchy’s haute bohemian floral version. c-Dusting off your collection with pride.

7-YOUR REACTION TO THE RECENT USHERING OF SNEAKERS AS A FASHION SHOE: a-The right pair can look fabulous at any age. b-If Chanel can show sneakers with couture, I’m in. c-High-tops are always a weekend staple.

6 insight

HOW DID YOU DO? Mostly A’s: YOU ARE AGE APPROPRIATE—ALWAYS You approach dressing with a thoughtful perspective. You always tow the line of cool, but look perfectly puttogether.

Mostly B’s: FASHION RULES YOUR AGE GAME For the love of fashion, as the saying goes, is your philosophy on being fabulous at every age.

Mostly C’s: AGE AIN’T NOTHING BUT A NUMBER You wear what you love no matter what decade of life you are enjoying. Fashion is supposed to be fun, after all.

10 Beauty Hacks YOU CAN DO WITH YOUR TOOTHBRUSH

E

veryone has toothbrushes from the dentist’s office that they never use to brush their teeth. Instead of throwing them away, try these tricks for your hair, nails and more.

Spray the bristles of an old toothbrush with hairspray to help tame fly-aways.

Since the bristles of each toothbrush are positioned so close together, they act as a super-tiny boar bristle brush. Spray the head of the toothbrush with hairspray and then brush any fly-aways back to blend in with the rest of your hair.

Tame unruly brows by brushing them into place.

Use the same method as the above flyaway step — spray the head of your toothbrush with hairspray to give your brow hairs some hold and brush them into place.

Mix water, lemon juice and baking soda together to create a self tanner-removing cocktail. Then, use the toothbrush to help exfoliate away any dark spots. Blend a cup of water mixed with a half-cup of lemon juice and a tablespoon of baking soda. Dip a toothbrush in the mixture and gently exfoliate over areas where you applied too much self tanner. The lemon juice mixture will erase any spots that accidentally ended up too dark.

Make flaky lips smooth by applying a balm over your lips, and then exfoliating away any dead skin with a toothbrush. Apply a balm over your lips and then using circular motions, use the toothbrush bristles to slough off dead skin.

Clean your hair dryer’s vent so it dries your hair more quickly. Lint caught in the vent of a hairdryer takes a toll on the motor, since it’s more difficult for the dryer suck in the air it blows onto your hair. Use a toothbrush to de-lint the vent so you can get out the door faster.

Clean up your cuticles with cuticle oil and a toothbrush.

Not everyone has time to go to the nail salon every two weeks. Maintain cuticles by applying cuticle oil every night to keep them hydrated, and then once or twice a week, exfoliate any roughed up pieces of skin surrounding your nail bed with a toothbrush, using circular motions.

Create your own Jackson Pollock nail art look.

If you don’t have a boar bristle teasing comb handy, use an old toothbrush to tease the hair at the crown of your head or the areas along your hairline to get instant volume in the places you want it most.

Grab a few toothbrushes and pick out the polishes you want to stipple onto your nails. Pour paint onto a paper plate, then dab the head of the first toothbrush into the polish (don’t oversaturate it or you won’t get the dot effect), and then tap the brush onto your nail haphazardly. Continue using these steps, switching out the toothbrush or cleaning it with polish remover each time, to finish the rest of the look, and then enjoy your Jackson Pollock-like mani masterpiece!

You might not have a nailbrush handy, but chances are you have an extra toothbrush. Use the bristles to get dirt out from underneath your nails in seconds.

If you’re all about texture (and who isn’t?!), after you’ve braided your hair into a polished plait, take an old toothbrush and gently brush the bristles upward, creating an instantly roughed up, textured finish.

Use your toothbrush to tease your hair.

Use the bristles of an old toothbrush to clean any dirt from underneath your nails.

Get a textured braid by brushing your toothbrush in upward motions.

Shiny Smile

White teeth are a sign of health and good self-care and they’re essential for a lovely smile. If your teeth aren’t as white as you’d like them to be, there are some things you can do to get whiter teeth at home. Here are some tricks that will help to remove surface stains caused by some of the most common tooth-staining culprits: foods and drinks we consume every day, like tomato sauce, wine and sports drinks. And don’t discount that morning cup of coffee or your nicotine habit. Basically, the common wisdom is that if it can stain your shirt, it can stain your teeth.

Brush With Berries

Say Cheese

These little berries will help lower your risk of high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and cancer, and as it turns out, are also helpful in whitening your teeth. The vitamin C in strawberries will help whisk away plaque build-up, while the malic acid, a natural astringent in the berries, will help to remove surface stains on teeth. Here’s how to do it: Crush strawberries into a pulp and apply that to your teeth with a toothbrush. Let it sit for five minutes and then rinse your mouth well with water. You can get similar results swapping the strawberries with a paste made with lemon juice and salt. Be sure to rinse well after applying that, too.

Eating cheese after a meal may help prevent cavities. It’s the casein, a milk protein, that’s in cheese (and milk and yogurt) along with calcium and phosphate that are at work here, making enamel stronger. Enamel is the outermost layer of a tooth, and it protects the layer called dentin. While enamel can become stained, it’s the dentin that determines the colour of your tooth. Eating things or using products that replenish calcium and phosphate is important to keeping enamel strong and healthy. While there are at-home remedies for removing stains from enamel, only your dentist can help with dentin discoloration. Keep enamel strong and keep your smile bright.

Brush And Floss Regularly

The best thing you can do for your oral health is to brush and floss your teeth after every meal if possible, or at least twice a day. Not only does regular brushing and flossing reduce your risk of developing tooth decay and gum disease, the combination also helps to remove plaque before it can give your teeth a yellow hue. And in addition to the toothy benefits, good oral hygiene habits may help lower your risk of other health problems, such as coronary heart disease and stroke.

Buff Stains With Baking Soda

Whether you’re new to the world of tooth whitening, or it’s becoming an old habit, you probably already know this one: Baking soda will help brighten your smile. This trick is an easy at-home stain remover. Mix baking soda and lemon juice into a paste. Brush the paste onto your teeth with a toothbrush; wait a minute, then brush thoroughly to remove. The baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, will help remove surface stains from your tooth enamel while the citric acid in the lemon juice has a bleaching effect. If you have sensitive teeth and gums, baking soda can be used alone to remove stains, or it can be mixed with salt to do its stain-removing trick. Take note This whitening method can be abrasive, which means it may damage your tooth’s enamel if you aren’t careful. Buff no more than once per week, and don’t let the mixture sit on your teeth for more than one minute at a time.

Crunch On Vegetables And Fruits

Eat your vegetables! It’s not just a dinner time directive from mom; it’s also a fantastic way to maintain a healthy smile. Crunchy vegetables such as raw celery and carrots, and crispy fruits like raw apples and pears are naturally abrasive, which means they’ll polish your teeth and remove stains from your tooth enamel and they’ll do it without harming or eroding enamel, the outermost layer of a tooth. Crunchy fruits and veggies also encourage your mouth to produce saliva, which is important because saliva helps protect teeth from cavity-causing bacteria. Saliva also contains compounds called surfactants as well as enzymes that give it detergent properties, which means the more saliva in your mouth, the fewer stains on your teeth.

for Healthy Living

8SUMMER STEPS

I

n the warmer, longer, lazier days of summer, the living may not be easy, but your life probably feels less chaotic. Even adults tend to adopt a “school’s out!” attitude in summer. That’s why this is a perfect time to improve your health in a fashion so seasonally laid back you’ll barely notice the effort.

1. GIVE YOUR DIET A BERRY BOOST If you do one thing this summer to improve your diet, have a cup of mixed fresh berries -- blackberries, blueberries, or strawberries -- every day. They’ll help you load up on antioxidants, which may help prevent damage to tissues and reduce the risks of age-related illnesses. Blueberries and blackberries are especially antioxidant-rich. A big bonus: Berries are also tops in fiber, which helps keep cholesterol low and may even help prevent some cancers.

2. GET DIRTY -- AND STRESS LESS

To improve your stress level, plant a small garden, cultivate a flower box, or if space is really limited, plant a few flower pots -- indoors or out. Just putting your hands in soil is “grounding.” And when life feels like you’re moving so fast your feet are barely touching the stuff, being mentally grounded can help relieve physical and mental stress.

3. FLOSS DAILY

You know you need to, now it’s time to start: floss every single day. Do it at the beach (in a secluded spot), while reading on your patio, or when watching TV -- and the task will breeze by. Flossing reduces oral bacteria, which improves overall body health, and if oral bacteria is low, your body has more resources to fight bacteria elsewhere.

4. GET OUTSIDE TO EXERCISE

Pick one outdoor activity -- going on a hike, taking a nature walk, playing games such as tag with your kids, cycling, roller blading, or swimming -- to shed that cooped-up feeling of gym workouts. And remember, the family that plays together not only gets fit together -- it’s also a great way to create bonding time.

5. BE GOOD TO YOUR EYES

To protect your vision at work and at play, wear protective eyewear. When outdoors, wear sunglasses that block at least 99% of ultraviolet A and B rays. Sunglasses can help prevent cataracts, as well as wrinkles around the eyes. And when playing sports or doing tasks such as mowing the lawn, wear protective eyewear. Ask your eye doctor about the best type; some are sport-specific.

SS 2014

FORECAST

Makeup Trends You Must Try The hair and make-up at the spring/summer 2014 shows were as covetable as ever. Hot, bright lips were once again the look to covet, whilst an almost make-up-free “raw” beauty with just-washed hair proved something of an anti-trend at the likes of Christopher Kane, Balmain and Alexander Wang. Those who really want to make a statement can take their cues from the choppy wigs by Sam McKnight at Fendi, Chanel and L’Wren Scott, whilst outlandish nails at the likes of Giles, Marc Jacobs and House of Holland proved that our love for nail art isn’t going away anytime soon.

STRAIGHTEN UP

Say goodbye to the big, bouncy blow-dry! It’s time to get your straighteners out again according to Chloé, Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren and Miu Miu. There was also a distinct lack of volumized roots on the catwalk, with hair slicked close to the scalp at Marc by Marc Jacobs, Anthony Vaccarello, Valentino and Prabal Gurung. 14 insight

SHEER SHADOW

A wash of shadow around the eyes made for a pretty, summer alternative to the smoky eye, coming in pastel hues at Burberry, Rochas and Dolce & Gabbana and in nude shades to add subtle definition at Giambattista Valli, Emilio Pucci and Ruffian. And if there’s only one color to wear this spring? Do Blue, we dare you.

REBEL LINER

Stella McCartney Black eyeliner never goes out of style, and this season the way to wear it is with the attitude of a rebellious teenager - heavy, striking and not at all retro. At Missoni, Rodarte and Stella McCartney it was feline and sultry, whilst at Versace, Jonathan Saunders and Erdem it was applied right onto the water line for extra drama.

RAW BEAUTY

There is always some variation on “natural beauty” on the catwalks, but for this season it really was as pared back as can be. Only a touch of concealer was used to create the bare looks at Balmain and Alexander Wang, whilst the wash-and-go hair at Christopher Kane required no product at all apart from a little oil at the ends where needed. At last, lazy is best.

TRANSFORMATIONS BLACK MAGIC

The French manicure dabbled in the dark arts on the spring/summer catwalks. The look that typically combines a nail polished in a pale paint and capped off with a bright white tip appeared instead in versions that incorporated black. At Nicholas K, the manicurist topped off a matte ebony nail with a shiny ebony stripe, while at Kenzo a black-and-white nail design in a French layout was entirely bewitching.

DO THE TWIST

If there’s one up-do to wear this season it’s the twist, ideally casually disheveled as at Tom Ford, Rochas, Giambattista Valli and Michael Kors.

STILL NAILING IT

Marc Jacobs Nail art is nothing new, but the spring/summer 2014 shows made it clear that it won’t be going anywhere soon. The breadth of styles was astonishing - tied together at David Koma, tortoiseshell-print at Rodarte, covered in Swarovski crystals at Giles, studded at Marc Jacobs, adorned with religious symbols at House of Holland and printed with LV logos at Louis Vuitton.

HOT LIPS

Paris and Milan, lips were largely left natural, but in New York it was another story entirely. Bright, matte lips packed a punch at Altuzarra, Rag & Bone and Prabal Gurung, and the message got through to London Fashion Week too, with scarlet pouts at Mary Katrantzou, Antonio Berardi and House of Holland.

This isn’t a trend we expect to see filtering down to the streets, but Sam McKnight spearheaded a wig revolution at the spring/ summer shows, with short styles at L’Wren Scott and Fendi and bobbed versions at Chanel. Guido Palau got in on the act too, with bleach blonde versions with thick, dark roots at Marc Jacobs. Continuing the trend for total model transformation, Josh Wood dyed every single model’s hair for the Prada show, implementing a strict “no colour, no catwalk” rule.

“SLEEK

STRAIGHT HAIR,

BRONZED SKIN AND SULTRY BLACK

GOLDEN GIRLS

If it isn’t already, let bronzer become your best friend for spring - inspired by the tanned skin at Topshop Unique, Michael Kors, House of Holland and Donna Karan, where a Seventies-style glow looked brand new again. There was also a Studio 54 vibe to the bronze eyes at the likes of Jason Wu, whilst a gilded beauty was on show at Christian Dior and Dries Van Noten via golden brows and gold-leaf partings respectively.

ENERGETIC STAY RAMADAN THIS

This year, the holy month of Ramadan falls in the summer season, which means that fasting hours become longer. So, during this time what does your body depend on to stay energetic all day long! When you fast, your energy depends on the sugar glucose that you consume during your Sohour meal. But this meal can only provide energy for a few hours and then your body has to depend on its stored glucose (glycogen) and fats. After fasting the whole day, it is the food you eat at Iftar that will provide your body cells with calories and nutrients to give you energy and vitality.

1

SOHOUR MEAL FOR VITALITY: What to eat for more energy and endurance?

For longer lasting energy this year, it is important to pay attention to the quality of the food you eat at this predawn meal. It is considered essential, as it prevents hunger, tissue breakdown and offers better endurance ability during the long day. Try to eat slowly digestible and absorbable foods, which are rich in fiber such as complex carbohydrates (whole-wheat breads, rice, pasta, potatoes and whole wheat grains such as Burghul). These foods give you energy that can last for many hours unlike foods high in sugar, which provide energy for only a short time and then lead to a drop in the blood sugar levels, leading to low energy. In addition, whole-wheat breads and cereals are rich in B vitamins, which help release energy from the food you’ve eaten. You can also eat protein-rich foods together with your complex carbohydrates, such as milk and dairy products (yogurt, Labneh, and cheese, preferably white cheese which has a lower fat content) or legumes (fava beans or chickpeas) that will make you feel full for a longer period. 16 insight

2

IFTAR TO REPLENISH YOUR ENERGY STORES

What to eat to compensate for liquids and nutrients?

• Break your fast with a few dates, a glass of fresh juice and a bowl of soup. Dates, juices and soups are good sources of carbohydrates and help bring your low blood glucose to normal levels. Liquids (water, juice, soup) also help maintain the fluid and electrolyte balance in the body and replenish whatever was lost during the day. • For more energy and vitality make sure this meal is balanced by including complex carbohydrate sources, protein from meat or legumes, vegetables as well as fruits.

GOOD TO KNOW

Light exercise between 3 pm and Maghreb time can help you burn body fat which allows you to lose or maintain your weight.

3

FEW TIPS TO PREVENT THE FEELING OF THIRST DURING YOUR RAMADAN DAYS 1. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids and water between Iftar and Sohour to prevent dehydration. 2. Limit your intake of fried foods and foods high in fats and sugar. 3. Avoid foods high in salt such as pickles, salty crackers, nuts and canned foods. 4. Try not to drink too much tea especially at Suhour as it can increase fluids loss through urination. 5. Don’t overeat at the Suhour meal.

oosing the right hairbrush is as essential for your hair as choosing the right hairstyle. There is a variety of hair brushes, let us show you the right use for each of them.

Radial/ Round

To blow-dry short hair, use small, round brush on damp hair to reach the root. For mid-length to long locks, use a larger round brush.

3 4

Paddle brushes are great for smoothing long locks. They work best with mid-length to long hair, but also work wonder on short thick hair.

Cushion

Vent

5

Paddle

The padded surface of a cushion brush helps minimize static and keeps the hair follicle smooth for a sleek finish.

The holes in the base, or barrel of a vent brush let air from your dryer circulate around the brush and hair, speeding up drying time and building volume.

Classic

Pronounced, separated quills hold the hair steady as you blow dry and also provide a thorough brushing for hair that’s dry and static.

H S

Hair Brush Tips Make sure that you have the correct hairbrush for the style that you are trying to achieve and for your hair type and texture. A baby-soft bristle is great for fine hair and coarse bristles are perfect for thicker hair. Wash your hairbrushes regularly in warm water with a little shampoo and allow the bristles to dry naturally. You don’t need to buy the most expensive hairbrushjust make sure the bristles are soft enough (natural bristles are usually softer though and more expensive). Use a hairbrush with bristles long enough to reach your scalp. This way they will release your hair’s natural oils. Use a comb instead of a brush to de-tangle wet hair (some people even say don’t comb it when it’s too wet because your hair is weaker when it’s wet). Regardless of the quality of your hairbrush, you always need to use heat protection products on your hair before blow-drying. Don’t brush thick, frizzy hair- use a pick comb instead.

The game featured is called, “What’s a DAME to do?” which is all about asking the ladies what they would do in crazy situations. Like, “You see an Ex at the grocery store and you are NOT looking your best. What’s a DAME to do?” This is the best ladies’ night game ever! It’s the perfect activity to get the night going.

Dig into the closet for your walkman and neon leg warmers. The 80s are a “totally awesome” theme night to have with your girlfriends. Center your entire girls’ night In on the hair, clothes, movies and music of the 80s.

I

f you have been building a new dam and haven’t caught up with your girlfriends in a long time, why don’t you invite them for a themed ladies’ night in and forget all the huss and fuss about work, life and ever complaining spouses!

Tell the girls to put on their sweats and come over for a night learning from a professional. Everyone chips in to hire an instructor who will teach the group a certain skill. You can go for a light-hearted lesson on belly dancing or a more serious lesson on self-defense.

RETRO NIGHT

CRAFT NIGHT Whether it’s jazzing up an old pair of heels, scrapbooking, or putting together your own set of arm candy, make your ladies’ night in a craft affair full of DIY projects.

BOOK EXCHANGE PARTY No, this is not just another book club this is something much better! Exchange one of your favorite books with someone who hasn’t read it yet and share with them why you love it. After exchanging you can keep in touch with the person who gave you the book to discuss your favorite parts and characters together. It’s a great way to make new friends and bond over something you now have in common.

CLOTHING SWAP PARTY Just like the book exchange, this is a great way to get rid of something you’ve used and are done with to trade in for something you’ve never had before. Send out invites to explain to your girls what a clothing swap party is; which is to bring clean, still good but used clothing, shoes, handbags, or accessories in exchange for someone else’s goods. One way to set it up is to have everyone choose a number out of a hat and go in turn.

7

CHICK FLICK NIGHT You might need to stock up on some tissues for this night in idea! Who doesn’t love a good chick flick night, especially one that includes “Thelma & Louise”. Call your girls and ask them to bring with them a few of their favorite DVDs like Dirty Dancing, The Breakfast Club, and My Fair Lady among many others. Again, you can all get cozy in your sweats and PJs or sport your favorite pair of jeans for this relaxed night in. Just be sure to let your girls know what the dress code is so no one gets embarrassed when they show up in their bunny slippers and ducky PJs and everyone else is in jeans!

BAKING NIGHT Cupcakes in a jar, call me up for this ladies’ night in idea! Make it a baking night in filled with all your favorite junk foods like homemade cookies, cupcakes, macaroons and more. You could also buy a few plain aprons and DIY them with fun chef names like “The Cookie Master,” “The Cupcake Girls,” or “Girls Who Bake,” so everyone can have something to wear while making a mess in the kitchen.

HOW TO

CARE FOR YOUR

Precious Shoes

ge:

Picking the right pair is half the battle. Make the most of your footwear with these tips to keep them looking as good as new. Life is a journey as they say, but it certainly wouldn’t hurt to look great while we go through it’s hurdles and ups and downs. A fabulous pair of shoes is every gal’s weapon of choice. However, just like your pet and, well, yourself, shoes need some good TLC. Whether you have shoes that come in real or faux leather, suede, or even canvas, allow us to share some nifty tricks:

St

ora

LSave the world, one shoe at a time by stuffing your shoes with old newspaper. This helps absorb excess moisture from sweat or rain and helps retain their shape. If your shoes get wet in the rain, stay away from the blow dryer unless you want your shoes to shrink. The heat may also weaken the glue and other materials used to reinforce the shoe. L Most shoe purchases have silica gel packs inside the box. DO NOT THROW THEM AWAY! These little babies, just like newspapers, absorb excess moisture, which prevent mold from eating away your beloved shoes! For best results, try to have at least four packs per pair and try to replace them every three months, especially if they’re kept with shoes you use often. L Store shoes in boxes. Although boxes take up space, they also protect and prolong the life of your shoes. L Regardless of storage space concerns, keep leather, patent, and canvas shoes AWAY FROM EACH OTHER! Even more so when there’s too much humidity, as this causes paint/color transfer.

22 insight

Shine:

L Control the urge to wear your new shoes without spray-

ing on a water protector. This helps ensure that rain or any liquid won’t be able to seep into the shoes. Refresh your shoes by spraying them every three months, but if your shoes got wet, spray them again to give a new coat once they’ve dried at room temperature. L Just like our body, shoes can only take so much sodium, which has damaging effects. When our sweat, which contains salt, dries up, this causes the leather to dry. So treat leather shoes as you would your skin: Polish leather with a leather conditioner to keep leather soft and supple. L You can use several household items as shoe cleaners: a. Apply vinegar on a rag or cloth to shine patent material on bags and shoes. b. Rub in petroleum jelly on patent and leather shoes. Allow it to be absorbed before wiping off the excess with a dry, clean cloth. This will not only keep them shiny but can also prevent them from cracking. c. Even a dab of moisturizing hand cream (not oil-free) can serve as a make-shift shoe polish. Apply a small amount on leather shoes (not suede) and buff with a clean, soft cloth. d. No shoe polish stashed in your travel bag? In your hotel when you travel, ask housekeeping to lend you some trusty furniture polish to keep your shoes in tip-top shiny shape! Buff away as usual. e. Use a light coating of spray starch on new fabric tennis shoes before wearing them—dirt can’t become embedded in the canvas, and the shoes will always be easy to clean. f. Rely on hairspray to give your shoes a nice sheen by spraying on a coat, which also seals in the polish. g. Didn’t we tell you fruits were good for your body and sole? Keep those damn banana peels off the floor by using the inner lining of the peel as a shoe polish and cloth. Work at buffing the shoe as you would with a normal cloth.

Maintenance:

L Just like in a relationship, we all need a chance to take a breather and have some space from our significant other. So do our shoes (they do come in pairs, don’t they?)--they need time to rest to recover and retain their shape. As much as possible, don’t wear the same pair daily. At most, wear that same pair twice weekly to make them last much longer. L Clean the insides. This is especially important if odor is a problem. Swab them with alcohol or a drop of tea tree oil, an antifungal agent. Take care not to splash to avoid staining the leather. L Although wearing panty hose isn’t as popular as it was years back and tights are usually worn as a trend (especially in tropical countries like the Philippines), wearing stockings or sock liners act as a protective barrier between your feet and sweat. The salt in our feet’s sweat weaken the insoles of our precious shoes. TIP: To give you more reasons to wear stockings, wearing control hose actually helps prevent varicose veins caused by wearing high heels, standing too long, and repeatedly crossing one’s legs when seated. L On the other hand, although salt from our sweat can cause shoe damage, a sprinkling of some table salt and letting it sit overnight can help control moisture and, ultimately, bad odor from your feet! 5. As you would with your refrigerators, ward off the funky smell from your feet by putting a dash of baking soda into shoes.

Quick Fixes:

L Hate those nasty zippers that get stuck? Here’s a trick: run a lead pencil down the zipper. This’ll help the zip run back and forth smoothly. L Frayed laces can be such a drag when trying to put it through holes! Tip: Dip it in clear nail polish and leave to dry or burn the ends with a lighter or candle to melt the fibers together. L If you need to give your shoes a revamp, simply replace the laces with new ones! Even better, try different colors and/or prints for the feel of a new pair of shoes! More importantly, as much as you gals are such shoe-a-holics, at the end of the day, priority must be given to your feet. No matter how pretty your strappy stilettos are, they’d only draw attention to your ugly feet, if it’s not taken care of. You’ve got to let your feet walk the talk: if your feet are suffering, then it’d be best to reconsider the long-term results of your shoe choices.

y own journey to being fit and healthy began when I was overweight and unhappy during college. I always believed that my genes and family history played the major role in how I look. However I came to realize that my eating habits, lifestyle and nutrition played the biggest part. I knew back then it would not be easy to change my life, but I look at myself right now –it didn’t torture me either, on the contrary I have gained control and power in a way I have never anticipated. I started my own business in 2012 (Cofounded StallionsHigh performance training) along with regular office work. I decided to quit my office job and follow my passion in fitness, health and wellness. I am guided by the vision of helping people become more FOCUSED on their physical abilities, health and nutrition. I received my first group fitness instructor certificate in 2009, I didn’t want to be the typical group fitness instructor who would do a regular aerobics/step class. I waited for the study material, flew all the way to London to get a chance to meet her and attend the workshop. Honestly, it was one of the best decisions I have ever taken. In November 2013, I became the first and only Cheerobics® instructor in Egypt.

“THE HOLIDAYS ALWAYS FLY-BY”

Don’t worry about not having much to make the holidays more glorious. Pulling together a loose plan or mini itinerary to stick to can help you bend the time. A powerful way to make sure you get the most out of your break is to set the intention for plenty of fun. Every morning when you wake up, start by asking: ‘How can I make today count?’ Grab a notebook and write yourself a ‘Things I Love Doing’ list, then, once you’ve filled the page with all the activities that bring you joy, plot them out in your summer calendar. When they’re scheduled, they’ll happen!

“I’LL RUN OUT OF MONEY”

Even if you score a wad of cash there are many things to buy (and icecreams to eat) in summer, and there’s nothing worse than missing out. You don’t need to be a big spender to have fun on your holidays. Op shops are a great place to get bargains. Get the girls together and go hunting. You never know what pieces you might find to freshen up your wardrobe for a fraction of the price.

“I DON’T FEEL CONFIDENT IN A BIKINI”

The first question you should ask is, ‘Do I want to wear a bikini?’ and you might say, ‘No, I’m more suited to a full-piece’, and that’s OK. But if it comes down to lacking confidence to go out in a bikini, get in front of a mirror and say ‘I approve of myself’ or ‘I’ve got great features’. Remember that people at the beach or pool are not waiting to look at you… they’re probably thinking, ‘OMG, how do I look in MY bikini?’

“ALL MY FRIENDS ARE GOING AWAY”

Holidays are awesome when you’ve

got your soul sisters to hang with and endless opportunities to swim, laugh, gossip, and laze away the days together. But, when they’re all MIA? Not so much. Declare that, this summer, you’re on a mission to find new ways to revel in your own company. Use the alone time to set big, bright goals for the New Year. Start a gratitude journal. Head out on solo creative adventures. Or, if you’re feeling crafty, whip up a brand new vision board with your favourite inspiring images. Really get to know who you are and what you want to bring to life this year.

5 HACKS TO MAKE YOUR SUMMER MORE WORTHWHILE: 1. Don’t sleep in too late: Sleep is awesome but you don’t want to miss out on the sweet hours of freedom provided on a platter! 2. Read for pleasure: Summer is a textbook-free zone, but this is the time to get lost in a really juicy read or watch that series you’ve heard all your friends talking about. 3. Make goals… and meet them: What do you want to achieve this summer? Writing down a few simple goals to tick off will leave you with a sense of personal accomplishment. 4. Teach yourself a new skill: Why not use some of those loose hours to brush up on your French diction or learn to pluck that guitar like you mean it? 5. Be active: Go exploring by foot, bike, or simply enjoy swimming every day. Not just because it makes you feel amazing, but because that’s what summers are made for!

READY AND PACK FOR YOUR BEACH HOLIDAY

I

t’s last minute, you didn’t pack for your summer vacation yet, and you have no idea what to take with you. Sit back, relax and just check out this holiday essentials list. • SUITCASE. First find a suitcase that you can fit all your luggage in. Get a unique looking one so you can find it easily on the conveyor belt at the airport. Make it secure by buying a padlock, and tag it with your name, number and address! • CASUAL COOL CLOTHING. Take clothing that you can wear throughout the day for going to the beach, shops and other attractions. Pack a pair of shorts and a skirt with tops to match them both to give you a few different outfits for your holiday. Don’t forget to pack your bikini! • DRESSES ARE GREAT FOR BOTH EVENINGWEAR AND AS CASUAL WEAR. Get casual day dresses and add accessories to make them extra special. Playsuits are a great idea for casual and eveningwear too! • SHOES. Flip-flops are standard beachwear, so a pair of these is a must. One pair of

heels for the evening will help to dress up your eveningwear and give you great posture. If you are planning long walks on your holiday, you may want to think about taking a comfy pair of shoes you can wear. • ACCESSORIES. Accessorize with the essential accessories you will need whilst chilling on the beach. Take a hat to keep the sun off your face and unique sunglasses to keep the sun out of your eyes. Jewelry can be bulky to take, so decide on a pair of earrings for the daytime, and one for the evening. Pack a few bangles and one or two fashion rings to wear. Try not to go over board; you will not need to use them all. • BEACH BAG & TOWEL. You may need a couple of bags for your holiday. A beach bag that you can fit a towel in and all your bits to take to the beach and a small unique handbag to take out in the evening with your camera, money and keys. • MAKEUP SUPPLIES. Take only the makeup that you need in your makeup bag. Mascara – to make your eyes pop. Tinted moisturizer – to give a tinted color and act as

foundation, as well as moisturizer for your face. Bronzer – to add color to your complexion. Eye Liner – either black or brown to go with all your different outfits. Lipstick – pick one that will go with any outfit. • ENTERTAINMENT. Pack items to keep yourself amused when you are away. Read a few books, listen to music and play ball games in the pool. • ESSENTIAL EVERYDAY ITEMS. Everyday items are a must in the suitcase; a good toothbrush, toothpaste, razor and hairbrush with hair accessories are the essentials to pack. Take sun cream and after sun. Keep your suntan by moisturizing using after sun. • LEGAL DOCUMENTS & MONEY. The absolute musts to pack in your hand luggage: Passport, Flight Tickets, Money in the correct currency! Details of where you are staying… • CAMERA. Pack a camera to record your holiday’s best moments and be snap happy whilst you’re away. Bring back pictures to show your friends and family what a lovely time you have had!

P SWEAT

ROOF

YOUR MAKEUP S

ummer is here, and we’re pumped for the pool weather. What we’re not so excited about? The sweat. Whether you’re commited to work in the hot sun or relax on the beach, it’s always a bummer to see your perfect makeup turn to liquid. You don’t have to let runny cosmetics ruin your summer fun. Just check out these tips for sweat-proofing your pretty face:

GO LIGHT

Make sure to use a moisturizer (with SPF!)— but be wary of one that’s too heavy. The heavier the moisturizer, the more you’re going to sweat. Serums are a good bet because they’re lightweight in texture. The same thickness rule applies for foundation— look for a sheer-coverage product. And remember, the more you put on your face, the more you’ll sweat off. 42 insight

PUT ON SOME PRIMER

Primer is your friend. Always apply some before you put on your foundation. A primer is basically going to hold onto your foundation. It’s like double-sided tape for it. Primer, together with your moisturizer, is especially important if you decide to wear waterproof makeup on your face since it can be drying. Another option if moisturizer, primer, and foundation sound like too much of a hassle: BB cream with SPF, which is like an all-inone.

PRIME YOUR EYES, TOO

Don’t let your eye shadow do a disappearing act (or that yucky crease thing)—use a primer on your eyelids.

GO WATERPROOF ON THE EYES Waterproof eye makeup makes a big

difference in the summertime, both for eyeliner and mascara.

EMBRACE THE WET LIP LOOK

Just like orange lips, lip gloss came back out of nowhere. So steer clear of potential for runny lip color by embracing the “sweaty” lip look—easy enough! (Of course, a gloss with SPF is best.)

PICK UP SOME POWDER

Always set makeup with a mineral powder. That will keep the makeup in place, smooth out the skin, and also absorb oil. You can also carry mineral powder and a sponge around in your purse for my-makeup-isstarting-to-drip emergencies. The other awesome powder for summer sweating: blotting powder. If you’re starting to spot oil but don’t want to add makeup (or remove the stuff that’s already there).

13 Love

THINGS YOU SHOULD

TO DO FOR

M

eat Loaf may have been onto something when he sang: “I would do anything for love, but I won’t do that.” Now, we understand that a mature relationship requires a healthy dose of sacrifice and compromise, but too much of that and you could lose sight of who you really are. After all, your partner fell for you—not a version of you who made a billion little tweaks and now only slightly resembles you. No matter how much you love someone, there’s nothing wrong with putting your foot down every once in a while—even if we’re just talking about picking something to watch on Netflix. So check out these 13 things no one should ever have to do for love:

GET A QUESTIONABLE TATTOO

Since when does proving your love require needles and permanent ink? We get that your love is supposed to be just as long lasting as the tattoo, but come on, let’s just have some good faith and keep the branding to a minimum.

FOOT THE BILL ALL. THE. TIME.

We are all for powerful women who can support themselves, but that doesn’t mean you have to support your date every single time you go out. Plus, let’s be honest, it’s nice to be wined and dined every once in a while.

DO WEIRD SEX STUFF

...Unless you want to. Hey, experimenting is awesome and a clutch in any good sex life, but if you’re so not into something, speak up.

PRETEND YOU DON’T HAVE CERTAIN BODILY FUNCTIONS

We get that it seems gross at first, but eventually every couple has to get used to the not-so-sexy side of your body. He can’t expect you to hold that in all night every night for the rest of your life! That’s how you get a stomach-ache.

WATCH DUMB AND DUMBER OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

It was funny the first 20 times, but now it’s just old. Just because we don’t love your favorite movie doesn’t mean we don’t love you.

DITCH YOUR FRIENDS

As the Spice Girls once said, “If you wannabe my lover, you gotta get with my friends.” In the first few months you may want to spend every waking moment together, but after that, it’s important to make sure you’re both still logging time with your friends. And if he’s not a fan of your crazy partying pal from college, well, maybe he can take a rain check the next time you’re seeing her. Hey, it’s not like you like every one of his old frat brothers.

MISS YOUR FAVORITE SHOW

We will not part with our Housewives or our Bachelorette, so he’ll just have to jump on the bandwagon or leave the room. Besides, any male that pretends he isn’t the slightest bit entertained by this stuff is fooling himself.

ADOPT THEIR CRAZY HOBBY

They like to fish? Great! Paintball? Uh, sure, let’s try it! Cliff diving? OK, no, stop. If they have a hobby that you have less than zero interest in, there is no harm in saying “See ya when you get back!”

SPEND EVERY SINGLE HOLIDAY WITH THEIR FAMILY

There is only so much you can take of his drunk Aunt Ruth. Plus, it’s only fair to take turns seeing each of your folks every year.

CHANGE YOUR DIET

That’s fantastic that you’re vegan, but...I love cheese. Seriously, if you change your diet, it should be because you want to. No one should come between a woman and her food.

GIVE UP YOUR DOG BECAUSE THEY’RE ALLERGIC

Nope, sorry, Skip was here first and we’ve been through some very real stuff together. Plus, there are medications for that!

TRASH YOUR WARDROBE

No partner should pressure you to dress in a way that just isn’t you—especially if you love your clothes. A few tweaks here and there are one thing, but a complete wardrobe overhaul is out of the question. (Unless the cast of What Not to Wear shows up at your place of work. Then he’s probably on to something.)

BETRAY YOUR HOME TEAM

If you and your man happen to be fans of opposing teams, don’t let him convince you to switch sides. Besides, a little rivalry can be hot...

!

1. DON’T RUB YOUR FRAGRANCE AFTER YOU’VE SPRAYED IT ON. Spray it on your wrists the back of your neck, or mist it into the air and walk through it. But whatever you do, don’t rub it in because this will make the top note disappear quickly, leaving you with only the middle and base notes, rather than the full fragrance.

2. OPT FOR A SCENTED NAIL POLISH OVER A NON-SCENTED ONE. Scented nail polish doesn’t have the fume-tastic odor of regular nail polishes, and breathes on the nail, which allows subtle fragrance emission throughout the day.

3. WASH YOUR HAIR WHEN IT GETS GREASY TO AVOID HAIR ODOR (H.O.). The hair equivalent of B.O. is H.O., and it happens when your hair is at its greasiest state. If you don’t know what I’m talking about you either already wash your hair on a regular basis or you’ve been the girl with H.O. and none of your friends are brave enough to tell you. You don’t have to wash your hair every single day, but if you ever notice it getting super greasy, definitely shampoo.

4. USE A PILLOW AND SHEET SPRAY. Spritzing your pillows and sheets allows the scent to envelope you and whoever you’re sleeping with when you’re lying in bed, but not in an overpowering way.

5. FEBREEZE YOUR CLOSET. If your clothes don’t have that brand new

cardigan smell anymore, pick up some air freshener and just spritz it around your clothes to keep everything smelling fresh.

6. CARRY A TRAVEL FOOT SPRAY IN YOUR PURSE. If your feet tend to smell after walking around all day, then you’ve been there: that dreaded moment when you have to take off your shoes to try on new ones or to curl up next to your lover on the couch. Either way, having smelly feet can ruin the moment, be it shopping or cuddling. So, to make sure your foot odor doesn’t precede you as soon as you slip off your booties, freshen up in a pinch by carrying a travel size foot spray with you.

7. KEEP A PERFUMED SACHET IN YOUR SOCK AND UNDERWEAR DRAWER. Sachets are key because they have material that absorb odor and distribute fragrance over time.

8. INVEST IN A SCENTED HAIR SPRAY

I’m not talking about the kind that offers hold; I mean a straight up, aerosol fragrance spray specifically for your hair. If you’re worried about your hair smelling too strongly (in a good way), don’t worry; the molecules in an aerosol fragrance are much tinier, so they won’t overwhelm you. A formula like this, as the day goes on, will also keep getting refreshed by the heat of your head, so spray it on in the morning before work and again before you go out.

9. KEEP AN OIL-BASED ROLLERBALL WITH YOU ALL THE TIME

Obviously you want to smell incredible all day long, but sometimes we want a more potent scent over a more subtle one. If

you want an “I’ve arrived” kind of scent that’s long lasting, use an oil-based rollerball. These types are easy to stash in your pocket or purse — plus, oils stay on your skin longer and give off a stronger scent because they’re more concentrated than alcohol-based ones.

10. PICK A KILLER BEAUTY PRODUCT COMBO. If you want to intensify your scent as the day goes on, apply a fragrant moisturizer in the morning, because it isn’t as heavy and won’t offend your co-workers, and then before you go out for drinks, refresh it with a body mist. This also reinstates the top note, which dissipates the quickest because it contains the smallest molecule.

11. IF YOU TEND TO GET DRY MOUTH, CARRY GUM. Bad breath comes from dry mouth, and if you have low salivary flow, you can’t produce enough saliva to rinse away bacteria. So, to stimulate your salivary glands, chew sugarless gum with xylitol for fresher-smelling breath. However, if the problem persists, talk to your dentist.

12. STAY AWAY FROM ALCOHOL-CONTAINING MOUTHWASH. Alcohol dries out your mouth and minimizes your salivary flow (which could lead to dry mouth), meaning it can actually cause bad breath. Instead, swish around an alcohol-free rinse that will keep your breath smelling the best.

Hollywood Smile Book an appointment with a dentist in advance of your wedding to give yourself plenty of time to get the perfect smile. Step one on the path to getting a perfect wedding smile is working to develop better oral care habits. If you’re not flossing daily, now it’s a good idea to start. Your toothbrush can’t reach every area of your mouth or between your teeth. Bacteria will build up between the teeth if you don’t floss everyday. You have a number of options when it comes to whitening your teeth. The results you get depend on the state of your teeth at the start and how much whiter you want them to be. If you are short on time, an at-home whitening system using strips or gels might be a good option. An in-office whitening treatment also offers quick results, as long as you have time to book the appointments and actually see the dentist.

Visit a Gynaecologist Your fertility doesn’t drop off a cliff the day you turn 30. At that age, it’s fantastic that you have a 63% chance of falling pregnant within 12 months. Fertility specialists are more relaxed now about women starting to try for a baby up to the ages of 37 or 38, because they have so much knowledge, experience and treatment but don’t forget that drinking, smoking and stress ages your eggs.

Your social network is your therapist Feeling anxious about the future can sparkle a lot of mixed feelings, especially at such a time. The most powerful prescription is your support network your friends, mum, sister. It’s their job to help you work through your feelings and give advice, such as keeping busy, staying fit and healthy, seeing friends and family and thinking positively.

Visit your dermatologist You can spend a little bit on skin luminosity and get a lot in return. Start these skin care steps at least 2 months before your wedding for an insured glow. BUT if your skin is very sensitive, see a dermatologist first… Apply vitamin C serum to your face in the morning; it’s an antioxidant so it fights skin-damaging‫ ﻭ‬free radicals and treats hyperpigmentation. Wear sunscreen everyday even in winter to combat ageing UVA rays. Apply a retinoid (Vitamin A derivative) at night. It’s the best complexion refresher known, but results take two to three months.

The Gastroenterologist Current medical opinion suggests the immune system may also be involved with intolerance, which cause bloating, constipation, gas and diarrhoea, but they can’t yet reliably be picked up on a blood test. A gastroenterologist can help you pinpoint your upsetting food list or try eliminating the most hardto-digest foods, such as wheat, dairy, insoluble fibre and sugar substitutes, such as sorbitol and xylitol, for two to four weeks to see if the symptoms disappear. If they persist, you may have irritable bowel syndrome.

Nourish your body Women need more iron and calcium than men, yet we’re still lacking these essential nutrients. In order to revive your body from the inside make sure you maintain these three super-foods in your diet… IRON: Pack in your recommended daily 14.8 mg. CALCIUM: Try to eat a small pout of yogurt, a glass of milk and a slice of cheese every day to get 700mg hit of calcium. OMEGA3: Switch chicken or steak for a serving of oily fish, such as salmon, or mackerel one to two times a week.

Smile and “ Exercise “

Physiotherapist The bottom muscles power every move we make standing, walking, bending, lifting. Otherwise lower back kicks in compensate. Try this glute boosting routine three times a week…

Lifts

Lie on your stomach and try to arch. Engage your tummy muscles, breathe steadily and squeeze your bottom to raise one leg. Keep your hips and back still and hold for20 seconds. Lower slowly, switch legs and repeat 20 times.

Squats

With feet shoulder width apart, hold a weight (2 litre bottle of water is ideal) at your chest. Sit back and down, until your thighs are parallel with the ground. With your back straight, slowly push up (repeat 20).

Squares

Lie on your side with your leg at a right angle. Lift the top leg (keeping it straight) and draw boxes with your foot for one minute in one direction, then in the reverse. Repeat with the other leg.

Sexual health awareness Your personal growth is highly dependent on your ‘sexual awareness’. Understanding this process is vital to your development. Visiting a health expert will keep you immune and aware of any sex diseases by taking the right precautions.

If you can do one thing for your health, make it exercise Excess drinking can disturb sleep, while smoking can reduce immunity and cause chest infection. If you put exercise on the top of your list, everything else will follow. When you workout, your body feels better, which motivates you to eat better, concentrate and function better.

10 TIPS TO

KEEP YOUR

SKIN HEALTHY THIS

SUMMER IT’S SUMMERTIME AND THE LIVING IS EASY, BUT THIS ALSO MEANS THE SEASON’S HARSH SUN IS BEAMING DOWN ON YOUR SKIN. WHEN THE BEACH BECKONS AND THE POOL PULLS YOU IN, STAY SMART AND PROTECTED WITH ALL THE RIGHT PRACTICES FOR A SAFE TIME IN THE SUN.

50 insight

Sunscreen is an obvious choice when at the beach, but when it comes to running errands, it’s easy to forget to apply. Have no fear; we’ve got the 10 best tips to keep your skin radiant no matter where the next few months take you. From exercise regiments to daily diet and exfoliating routines, here are the best ways to achieve healthy, sun-kissed skin!

FACE YOUR DAY Even those short walks to lunch or running errands can put you at risk of too much sun exposure. Adding a healthy layer of face protecting sunscreen to your morning beauty routine is a critical don’t-skip-it step. Today’s advanced formulas combine powerful protection with an almost weightless feel so your makeup layers on silky smooth. Look for lotions enhanced with antioxidants for an extra skin-health boost.

WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE When it comes to your body, Mother Nature knows best! Seasonal summer foods like watermelon, leafy greens, and berries have a higher concentration of water to help you stay hydrated in the heat. In addition to drinking your daily in-take of water, it’s healthy and smart to indulge in fresh, water rich foods. So go ahead and enjoy watermelon – it’s 91% water!

LIP SERVICE While we never need an excuse to buy a new lipstick, sun protection for your lips means mandatory shopping! Whatever your color choice (we love everything from nude to red hot!), look for lip care with an SPF of at least 15. And consider lip balm vs. gloss for the summer, as balms tend to hydrate more and stay on longer.

GET UP AND GLOW Summer’s best accessory: a sun kissed glow. But it’s just not great for your skin, given the dangers of sunbathing. Salon spray tans, administered by a technician with an airbrush-type applicator, are an alternative, but weekly near-naked visits cost time and money. Thankfully you can get a sexy-sun-kissed look in the privacy of your own bathroom with salon-worthy results. The latest self-tanners offer spray mist application so you don’t have to worry about silly streaks or serious dry time. Bronzed and beautiful, your white sleeveless dress is calling your name.

ENJOY YOUR RADIANT SKIN DURING THE HOLY MONTH OF RAMADAN T

aking care of your skin to ensure you look glowing and bright can sometimes be a source of concern during Ramadan. The summer heat and fasting may make your beautiful skin look dull as your body loses the important vitamins and minerals. BUT, if you make sure you have the right nutrients at Iftar and Suhour your skin will stay positively radiant all through this blessed season of goodness. A simple tip is to ensure that your diet includes a range of foods. If your food intake is limited to only certain types, your skin will become dry and dull, because certain nutrients are needed for the growth and repair of the skin just like your hair and nails. So the more you take care of your eating habits during this holy month, the healthier your skin will in turn be.

ESSENTIAL NUTRIENTS THAT HELP YOU MAINTAIN HEALTHY SKIN • VITAMIN A: One of the most important vitamins for skin health, it prevents skin dryness and dehydration in addition to giving your skin a smooth, soft texture. Carrots are the richest source of vitamin A, which is also available in apricots, spinach and green leafy vegetables. During Ramadan, it is good to include fresh carrot juice in your juices menu at least once a week and add 52 insight

So include lean meat, grilled chicken, and fish in your main meal, as they are the richest sources. Get the benefit of whole grains by replacing white bread with whole wheat bread. And do not forget to add lentil soup and beans stew to your menu list at Iftar.

• VITAMIN E: Another essential vitamin, it

helps minimize the appearance of wrinkles and enhances cell regeneration. Vitamin E is found in nuts and vegetable oils that you use in your cooking.

• VITAMIN C: This vitamin plays an important

role in maintaining the integrity and glow of the skin. Vitamin C rich fruit juices include orange, strawberries and melon juice.

• ANTIOXIDANTS: In addition to the above antioxidants – vitamins A, C, E, Selenium and zinc are also antioxidants that play a role in protecting skin cells and maintaining

a role in skin preservation and make your skin glow. These are essential fatty acids because the body cannot synthesize them making it necessary to obtain them from food, mainly fish. So include a fish-dish 2 times a week during your Iftar, but make sure you grill the fish rather than fry it.

• WATER, WATER, WATER: It is essential to

drink plenty of water to prevent your body and skin from dehydration, especially during Ramadan. Water also helps preserve your skin’s elasticity and protects you against the early appearance of wrinkles. Drink as much as 8 glasses between your Iftar and Suhour.

GOOD TO REMEMBER

Don’t forget to include fresh fruits and vegetables, which add color and variety to your Ramadan menu as they are rich in vitamins and minerals and are required for keeping your skin healthy and hydrated. The holy month of Ramadan is a good time for you to prepare nutritious and varied meals. It’s the perfect time to make the most of this wonderful season by eating healthy to nourish your body and skin.

It’s no secret that the sun is one of the richest sources of Vitamin D that is essential for health; and by constantly applying sun block creams and lotions on your skin every time you step out of your home, you’re depriving yourself of it. Vitamin D is vital for the health and strength of your bones and teeth, support of your immune system, protection against dementia and aging of the brain and also for minimizing asthmatic symptoms. You may be surprised to know that it also protects your body against cancer.

BENEFITS OF SUNLIGHT FOR HEALTH: 1. BOOSTS SUPPLY OF VITAMIN D The supply of Vitamin D increases due to sunlight, which is why it is also known as the sunlight vitamin. Mostly, every tissue in our body is regulated by the active form of Vitamin D, some of it being involved in the metabolism of calcium, the immune system and neuromuscular functions. Vitamin D deficiency results due to lack of outdoor sun exposure. This is one of the most important benefits of sunlight. 2. LOWERS CORTISOL LEVELS The stress hormone is known as cortisol. It may increase your appetite and experts suggest that high cortisol levels lead to weight gain. In a study practiced by the Center for Neuroscience, University of Colorado, it was found that through exposure to bright light, cortisol levels could be decreased.

3. HELP LIFT DEPRESSION Sunlight could help sufferers of depression. Due to less sun exposure, a particular form of depression called seasonal affective disorder (SAD) can occur. It mainly happens in winters or during fall. In 2001, a study conducted by the University of Milan, Italy shows that the sunlight of the early morning can reduce the length of hospitalization in patients with bipolar depression. Sun helps our body respond to stressful situations and also has other functions as diverse as maintaining blood pressure, managing the release of insulin, and converting fat and carbohydrates into energy. 4. LACK OF SUNLIGHT INCREASES YOUR RISK OF HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE A study at Harvard Medical School found that due to less sun exposure your risk of developing high blood pressure increases. In addition, sunlight could directly affect your

risk of cardiovascular disease according to the same report. It seems that Vitamin D is one of the most powerful hormones for regulating blood pressure. 5. LOWERS YOUR RISK OF DIABETES Yes! According to experts, Vitamin D has a preventative effect on diabetes. A study in the year 2006, led by the University of Lund and Malmö University Hospital, found that consumption of Vitamin D in early life was strongly associated with a lower risk of Type 1 Diabetes. 6. HELPS IN PSORIASIS Psoriasis is a skin disease in which red, dry plaques are produced and it thickens the skin. It is said that it is non-curable. Light therapy is used for treatment in case of psoriasis, known as phototherapy. The sun is a source of light; therefore sunlight can help you reduce psoriasis.

BENEFITS OF SUNLIGHT FOR SKIN:

BENEFITS OF SUNLIGHT FOR HAIR:

Apart from a great tan, sunlight has some amazing skin benefits.

It’s not just your skin that needs the sun for health. This may be new news to you but your hair can actually benefit from the sun as well.

7. TREATS ACNE

10. REMEDY FOR HAIR LOSS:

Skin disorders like acne, psoriasis, and eczema can be healed with the power of sunlight. A recent study indicated that a four-week outdoor therapy of sunbathing did wonders in relieving the symptoms of psoriasis in more than 80% of the subjects. Fungal infections can also be healed with the rays of the sun. 8. HELIOSIS Sunlight therapy, or Heliosis, is one that works marvelously well. The trick to making sure that your skin benefits instead of getting damaged is to slowly expose your skin to the sun instead of complete exposure from the very first day. This is especially important if you are sensitive to the sun and your skin is not used to the exposure. 9. HELPS YOU LOSE WEIGHT Do you want to know another great fact about sunbathing? It is actually great if you want to lose weight as it helps get rid of the excess fat in your body! Seriously, do you need another reason to get going and frolic for a while outdoors?

Your hair benefits especially if you suffer from hair loss. That’s right, you read it right! Heliosis is an effective remedy for hair loss. While this is great news for those who suffer from extreme loss, it’s important to also remember that overexposure to sunlight can do more damage than good so go easy on giving your hair a dose of the sun’s rays. The epithelial cells that help your hair grow are known to be highly sensitive to UV light and too much exposure can deplete the Vitamin E and C cells that are essential for your hair growth. 11. HELPS HAIR GROWTH Sunlight allows your body to produce Vitamin D and this in turn stimulates the growth of your hair and prevents hair loss. While it is important to always have sunscreen on especially if you’re going to be outdoors for a long period of time, remember that you shouldn’t totally deprive yourself of the sun’s rays. Get out a little more and let your body get the vitamins it needs to give you healthy skin and hair. Lastly, don’t let sunscreen commercials scare you into getting stuck indoors. Instead, get outdoors and revel in the sun’s light and embrace its warmth!

BEST-FIT

LIVING TIPS FROM

Jessica Simpson J

essica Simpson’s shape-up journey has been seriously inspirational, and we were stoked to hear her announce that she hit her goal weight back in March of this year. Plus, we get a little more impressed with every super toned selfie she posts. Seriously, Jessica, you’re doing it right. So we’ve rounded up some of our favorite bits of advice from Jessica on living life the healthy way:

56 insight

1) GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK WHEN IT COMES TO THE BABY WEIGHT.

“You are creating a life and honestly it’s not easy. It is a really hard thing to go through. You deserve to eat your ice cream. You deserve to have your pancakes. Do whatever you want to do, and then afterwards, just know that you have to work really hard.”

2) TAKE IT ONE STEP AT A TIME. “I’m taking it week by week so I don’t get frustrated with myself. If I had a long-term goal and that’s all I thought about, I think it would set me back more. So I really every week, try to make sure I stick with my points and get four workouts in. That’s my goal this week and I hope that I can lose from that. If not, I’m going to keep on going and try it the next week. So far, so good.”

3) THERE ARE WAY MORE BENEFITS TO WORKING OUT THAN JUST A TONED PHYSIQUE.

“Working out and being active overall makes me a happier person to be around. I let out so much more anxiety if I go out and walk and talk to Eric, who is basically my therapist on our walks.”

4) NO MATTER WHAT DIET AND FITNESS DECISIONS YOU’VE MADE, YOU CAN START AGAIN.

“My advice to anyone who is starting their journey in weight loss is just to start. Just to know that you’re worth it and that you get a new beginning. We all deserve that.”

5) BE A HEALTHY-LIVING ROLE MODEL.

“Raising Maxwell makes me realize that I don’t want her to see me beat myself up for things like food choices or numbers on a scale. I don’t want her to learn anything like that from me.”

6) DON’T BAT AWAY COMPLIMENTS—ENJOY THEM!

“Learn to accept compliments as graciously as you give them. Don’t dismiss them—soak up the positivity and give it back as often as you can!”

7) PAT YOURSELF ON THE BACK EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE.

8) SQUEEZE IN A WORKOUT— HOWEVER YOU CAN.

“With both kids, I’m running up and down my stairs a million times. Kids can keep your metabolism going.”

9) MAKE A GET-HEALTHY GOAL YOU’LL FEEL GOOD ABOUT.

For Jessica, it was “to be the best version of myself and to feel great. I want to be a great mom and a great example to my kids.”

10) THERE WILL BE UPS AND DOWNS, SO REMEMBER YOUR WEIGHT DOES NOT DEFINE YOU.

“If I’m five pounds heavier, if I’m 50 pounds heavier, or five pounds lighter, I just don’t think it should define who you are. But I was proud of myself throughout that time period for not going out and doing every crash diet and trying to get as skinny as I could, or not eating.”

Don’t be afraid to show off all that hard work. “These are my legs during a workout today! I’m proud of myself!”

SULIEMA

BENHALIM

“ BEING A BAKER ISN’T EASY, BUT IT’S A LOT FUN 60 insight

S

he represents the best example of ‘You are never too young to pursue your own dreams.’ Suliema Benhalim, the 18 YEAR OLD owner of Nino’s Bakery is taking small, delicious, strong steps towards her dream and may I say: she is doing a very yummy job!

NINO’S

BAKERY What can you tell us about yourself? My name is Suliema Benhalim. I am an 18-year-old Libyan Egyptian born and raised in Egypt. I love baking, horse riding and pineapples. I graduated from the Modern English School with the IB Diploma in 2013. I’m currently in a gap year pursuing my passion for baking and horse riding.

ON A TYPICAL DAY... I bake, ride and go out.

I HAVE A SWEET TOOTH FOR...

What inspired you to start Nino’s Bakery? Ever since I was a child I was passionate about baking and kitchen work. My mum, being a big inspiration, is an amazing cook and baker. She always had a dream of owning a baking business, which is one of the reasons behind Nino’s. One of the things that truly inspired me was the idea of creating something artistic out of cake! The idea of making an edible 3D cake inspired from a dream, a picture or even a hobby or interest fascinates me! When did your passion for baking start? I always remember helping my mum bake when I was a child. I’m sure it was the licking the bowl part of the process! What keeps you motivated to continue? The joy people get when they eat what I bake! What’s your advice for anyone who wants to follow your footsteps? I’d advise them to be brave and outgoing! Many people don’t realize this but the baking process is actually difficult and challenging, especially creating recipes! I’d also advise anyone to be happy; if you bake while you’re upset or angry the baked good is never as good and that’s something I have truly come to believe. Do you remember the first recipe you ever baked? What was it? The first recipe I have ever baked was my family’s vanilla and chocolate cake. It is still by far one of the fluffiest and most moist cakes I have ever made. What’s the hardest process in customizing a cake? The hardest process in customizing a cake is trying to exceed the customers’ expectations and baking their dreams into reality!

INSIGHT’S QS White chocolate.

MY ROLE MODELS ARE...

MY SECRET

My mother, father and Malala Yousafzai.

INGREDIENT

IS HAPPINESS What was the strangest order you ever took? The strangest order was a pig cake and another cat cake! The pig cake was a pig in mud! They were both very strange.

How did your parents react to your decision?

What’s the one thing you hate about your job?

My parents actually wanted me to take the gap year; oddly I was the one refusing.

The fact that some people don’t appreciate what we do, how long it takes or how hard it is! I work because I love baking and I love making people happy, yet some people don’t understand how much effort we put in the small details! Being a baker isn’t easy, but it’s a lot of fun.

What do you plan to study in future?

The decision to take a year of college is not a usual one, especially here in Egypt. How did you take such a bold decision? Is it something you always wanted to do? I honestly never planed a gap year. I took the decision because I was supposed to study abroad but I wasn’t in great health. I couldn’t travel and live alone, so I deferred entry and took the decision of taking a year off to get better.

I want to study Law and Economics. What are the pros and cons of having your own business at such a young age? The pros of having my own business, is the fact that I am exposed to so much at a young age. It makes me more responsible and organised, it also motivates me! The con however is the fact that there is so much to do and sometimes it feels like it’s a bit too much. Another con is that not many people understand it, especially some friends. Where do you see Nino’s Bakery in 10 years? I see Nino’s Bakery becoming an actual store with a good reputation! One day I’d love to have Nino’s Bakery turn into something like Charles Cake Angels in South Africa.

MISS EGYPT 62 insight

Despite her disappearance from the world of fame, Egypt has always been her true love and she would do anything to make it the best country in the world. Her life is divided between her work and her little Miss Sunshine. Hoda Abboud, Miss Egypt 1987, is one of the beautiful faces that are hard to forget.

“ QUEEN BEAUTY

Do you remember the moment you were crowned Miss Egypt? How did you feel then? Of course I remember, there are moments in one’s life that are kept forever and this is one of them. I felt very proud and was so looking forward to the responsibility that came with the title.

What can you tell us about

CHILDREN Happiness

What encouraged you to join Miss Egypt’s Beauty Pageant?

What did you gain from this experience? I gained so much out of this experience. I acquired skills that helped me in my life and made me ready for real world challenges. It opened new opportunities in my life through the influential people I met. It helped me become a change agent by raising awareness and affecting social issues, especially when it comes to women’s position in the society. Why do you think Beauty Pageants in Egypt are not as successful as before? Because they are not well marketed and they are not positioned in the right way, which negatively affects the perception, and in conclusion not so many girls are keen to participate. Unlike most beauty queens, you refused all the offers to act or to host, why? I did what I do best, I love art in all its types and I love to promote it, that is why I joined the Alexandria Opera and organized so many concerts and hosted so many shows from all over the world. Why didn’t you peruse a career in your field of studies? I graduated from Fine Arts as an interior decorator, which complemented most of my career ambitions. I practice my field of studies at home (haha). How do you see the role of women as a part of a growing community today? Women are an integral part of any growing community. A well-balanced community has both men and women working towards the same goal.

ART

WOMEN:

SOFT AND STRONG

What do we still need to do to gain equal rights under the male domination? All what we need is to keep working hard to prove ourselves and be good in whatever we pursue, and I see it changing fast. There are a lot of very successful women whether in politics, business, etc... Why did you decide to join the political world? What did it add to you? I joined the political world to influence our society and make a difference, and to use effectively the skills I gained through my life experience in a way that can help my country flourish. Would you consider re-joining the parliamentary elections? No. How do you spend your day? I start my day with my beautiful daughter who is the sunshine of my life. After she goes to school, I go to my office. I have a small company that plans and organizes events and conferences.

The food of the soul

EGYPT Om el donia

BEAUTY Is everywhere, you have to learn to appreciate it in everything

Women are an integral part of any growing community. A well-balanced community has both men and women working towards the same goal.

My whole family, my mother, my father and all my sisters, they encouraged me to go for it.

RAFIK MORCOS 64 insight

“ SUCCESSFUL YOUNG AND

He is the HVAC Sales Manager of HETO Air Conditioning Company! Beside his successful career, he is the author of Molokheyet Masr El Arabeya, which turned him into a celebrated author practically overnight.

I believe that we were all created to live around other people. And one of the main ways to be happy is to make people around you happy or even draw a smile on their faces. I chose to do it through a book.

What can you tell us about yourself and what you do? My name is Rafik Morcos; I am the sales manager of HETO Air Conditioning Contracting and Supplying Company. I am 27 years old, I studied at the Jesuits and graduated from the American University in Cairo, majoring in mechanical engineering.

What inspired you to write Molokheyet Masr El Arabeya? After graduation and getting into the real life and all its obstacles, and after being more aware of the different social classes, and how big the gap is between a fortunate guy, like myself, and millions of unfortunate people living in Egypt. I began to understand the blessings I have been given since I was born, having a loving family, friends that are like brothers and sisters, a house I live in, a very comfortable lifestyle and everything I could ever wish for. Writing was my way to reach these people in an attempt to help them by drawing a smile on their faces. And Molokheyet Masr el Arabeya was my first trial.

How did you find your current path in life? Was there a turning point or “Ah-Ha” moment for you? Having a private family business in the field of engineering was my drive to major in this same field. Unlike most of the fresh graduates, I started working in the company only 10 days after graduation. It was then that I discovered my lack of interest for a normal daily work lifestyle. Not only so, but being pretty active on the social media, I developed a habit to write at least 3 statuses daily on Facebook. With the option of instant feedback Facebook gives to every user, the feedbacks I received from my friends were pretty encouraging and pushed me to go on with this habit. I discovered my love for writing, and my personal sarcastic, sometimes funny, style that could make any reader either smile or laugh; it was then that I felt responsible to use my talent. The enjoyment I feel when I know that I have helped someone get out of a bad or negative mood is really fulfilling.

Can you tell us a little bit about your creative process? I didn’t do much about the book to come out this way. I believe that every single person was created with many talents. Once you discover your talents, they turn into passion, and the creative process becomes effortless. What kind of books did you enjoy as a boy? What are your favourites today? As a kid I was a big fan of J’aime lire, Tintin and an Egyptian magazine called Flash. Today I enjoy reading sarcastic Egyptian books, like Osr el Kalam for Galal Amer.

When did you decide that this is not enough and you can do more? I am one of the very few people who do not complain about the daily traffic in Egypt, not because I’m a holier, but because I am so lucky to have my office in the same building where I live. This provides me with much more time than any usual worker in Cairo who wastes an average hour and a half going to work and another hour and a half leaving work, excluding the energy the loaded streets of Cairo absorb from you. I dedicate some time during my day to write, not only to write but also to think about what I want to write. It is definitely difficult to manage my time between my work and my writings but making people laugh is worth it.

Are there any authors/prominent figures that influence your work? Reading for legends like Galal Amer and Gibran Khalil Gibran have helped me develop my writing skills, and still does. Galal Amer has mostly influenced me with his sarcastic style.

How do you manage your time between your day job and your writing?

How did your family and friends support your journey of writing this book?

What is your advice for other up and coming authors who want to follow their own dreams in writing? My advice for everyone who wants to follow his/her dream in writing is to write for people and not for money or fame. Every word is a double edged sword use it in a way to help our world, dream big, you can change the world, you can do it.

ONCE YOU DISCOVER YOUR TALENTS, THEY TURN INTO PASSION, AND THE CREATIVE PROCESS BECOMES EFFORTLESS My family and friends are the very first reason why Molokheyet Masr el Arabeya is in the Egyptian bookstores right now; otherwise this book would have just been a thought. I am lucky to have them in my life. What’s it like to see someone reading your book? I am not that famous yet, but just reading some hashtags about the book from people I don’t know makes me feel like I have achieved one of my goals, which is to connect with people from different backgrounds. Everyone has insecurities and doubts and we know that being your own boss can be a blessing and a curse! How do you encourage yourself to stay positive and keep moving forward? I try to stay positive. Sometimes life can be tough, but it is definitely not a good excuse to surrender. Life is a beautiful gift and the people around us like family and friends make it worth enjoying. Why do you think the book has struck such a chord with readers of so many ages? I hope it did! But I wrote everything without trying to please anyone and without aiming for personal profits. The book is based on my ideas and observations about our social lives, and that may be the reason why many readers, regardless the age, can relate to it. What does the future hold for Rafik Morcos? I ask God to give me the strength to accomplish my goal and reach more people by highlighting a more positive view about their lives. I am currently preparing for a new book with a different concept than Molokheyet Masr el Arabeya.

shaklak mosh ghareeb How can you describe your experience with ‘shaklak mosh ghareeb’? Different, rich and enjoyable.

How much convincing did it take for you to do this show?

A lot actually! Performing on live TV show was a new experience for me. Impersonating famous characters and competing with others on stage was very challenging. In drama or theatre I act different characters, but I have my own sense and vision for the character, I paint it my way. This was different. It took lots of efforts to get myself into this experience.

How did you spend your week when you were on the show?

A week with no weekend! We had a very short time to prepare for every new character. Each character was challenging in many aspects, the looks, the movements, the voice and the appearance. From Sundays through Tuesdays I study every single aspect of the character. From Wednesdays through Saturdays, I work with the production staff in the studio; selecting outfits, doing dance training and running rehearsals. The longest day was Saturday till the end of the live show. I have also managed to continue my voice training classes with my private tutor once or twice a week at least, and I tried to leave some time for swimming to relax.

What’s the most enjoyable thing about being in ‘shaklak mosh ghareeb’?

The varying characters and performances I had to show and the tricks that I learned to express myself through each of them. The excitement I had every week for the next character was a drive on its own to continue the show. Also, communicating with my followers on facebook and twitter after every show was very enjoyable.

Which star that you haven’t played already, would you like to play? Actually, I like to go further and show pop groups like the Abba. This demands more skills to synchronize in-group performance.

Who do you think was your toughest competitor?

I didn’t participate in the show to compete with others, although that was the rule of the game. But I had my own game; each character I performed was competing with the others. And Cher was the toughest of all.

upclose With Dima You act, you sing and you can dance, tell us something you can’t do?

I can’t create a nice painting!

How do you keep balance between work and your personal life since you’re so busy? I can manage.

During the show you’ve gone from blonde to brunette, which color do you prefer? I stick with mine!

How do you get ready for the summer season?

Usually, I travel. This is year I don’t think I will be able to travel due to extended work commitments.

If you could travel back in time to meet any famous person, who would you choose?

I am shooting a complex social drama series in Damascus called ‘Shahr Zaman’. In addition, I am going into huddles to join a couple of series between Damascus and Beirut. Also, I am preparing a new song and hopefully I will be able to release it by the end of 2014.

What will you see this Ramadan?

As an actress, I like to take a panoramic view on most if not all productions during Ramadan. I choose what attracts me most and watch it after the season.

What is your favourite Ramadan delight? Damascene sweets.

How do you like to spend your Ramadan?

Unfortunately, I am committed to work during Ramadan.

WEIRD THINGS WOMEN DO WHEN THEY ARE ALONE 74 insight

GUYS, it’s your lucky day! In an attempt to give your minds a little break, we collected some of the things girls do when they are alone… And I swear they don’t include this one specific thing! You’re welcome!

1. EAT CHINESE FOOD ABOUT 90% OF THE TIME.

Eating kale and brussels sprouts is all fine and good, but sometimes a girl just needs a fried dumpling. Or spare ribs. Or sesame chicken. Or all of it at once. Am I right?

2. WATCH SERIES ON REPEAT.

Gossip Girl. Gilmore Girls. Pretty Little Liars. There’s something strangely wonderful about re-watching shows. Maybe it makes us feel taken care of... or maybe we just can’t get enough teen drama.

3. LISTEN AND BELT TO BEYONCÉ ON LOOP.

There’s nothing like getting groovy to femaleempowering lyrics on a Sunday afternoon. It makes us feel drunk, in love, and like we rule the world… Wait a minute, we already do!

4. CLEAN LIKE A MANIAC AND TRY AND PERFECT A FLOWER ARRANGEMENT. There is a Martha Stewart inside every one of us that has to get out!

5. TRY ON OUTFITS.

Leave a woman alone for three hours and she’ll have every outfit from tomorrow at the office to a month from now picked out, planned, and accessorized. So what if she has to buy a new pair of shoes to match her ensemble a week from Monday? At least now she can plan and save for it!

6. DOUSE IN FANCY BODY LOTION, HYDRATING FACEMASK, AND COMB IN A HAIR TREATMENT.

Alone time is precious in this respect. We love nothing more than trying every new beauty remedy.

7. PRACTICE OUR SMILES IN THE MIRROR.

It’s a productive activity. Or maybe it’s not, dare to judge?!

8. ANALYZING TEXT MESSAGES.

Oh Lord! Do we analyze text messages! Every. Single. One. It’s crazy. Like, if you add too many emotions, use the wrong your/you’re, or are even the tiniest bit vague you can bet that we are reading them out loud and getting advice on what to say back.

9. TAKING SELFIES.

We’re so vain, we probably think this song is about us.

10. WE PERFORM CRAZY GROOMING RITUALS.

Popping pimples? That’s expected. But think bleaching or waxing our moustaches, plucking stray hairs, and sanding (or picking) away calluses of our feet. You may think we’re naturally this fresh and beautiful, always. It takes hard work pal!

11. STALKING EXES ON FACEBOOK.

70% of women admitted to Facebook-stalking an ex—and it’s probably not because she misses the guy!! We like to prove whose life is better!

12. SHOVING EVERYTHING INTO A CLOSET.

When someone is coming over and you don’t have time to clean, what do you do? Shove everything into your closet and close the door. Duh.

13. SLEEPING WITH A TEDDY BEAR. His name is Ralph so what?

14. EATING TWO DINNERS BECAUSE THE FIRST ONE WASN’T VERY GOOD SO IT DIDN’T REALLY COUNT.

This will be highly unlikely if you ate potato chips and onion dip for dinner. That is satisfying.

15. LISTENING TO THE SAME SONG ON LOOP FOR FIVE TO SIX DAYS IN A ROW.

And it doesn’t matter if it’s something uncool like Soul II Soul’s “Back to Life.” Your plants won’t mind one bit.

16. PRACTICE OUR OSCAR ACCEPTANCE SPEECHES.

Well you never know when the lucky day is! Besides we need to thank each and every person we know and believe me we know a lot!

17. PRACTICE THE PERFECT AMOUNT OF SHAKY VOICED EMOTION FOR WHEN JOHNNY DEPP PROPOSES TO US. Wait a minute, Depp is engaged, Clooney is engaged… Mrs. Butler it is!

18. COME UP WITH PERFECT RESPONSES FOR ARGUMENTS THAT HAPPENED AGES AGO.

Believe me these things are never out of date, and when it comes to certain amount of people they are very handy indeed.

19. PICKING OFF THE NAIL POLISH.

It will suck all the life out of your nails and leave them with an orange-tinted stain, but it’s all worth just to see your hard work peel off like sunburnt skin, besides the color didn’t really match the OFOTD!

20. GOOGLING OURSELVES.

Please! And don’t pretend like you don’t do it!!

Summer BUCKET LIST

TYPE III (13-18 POINTS): You sometimes burn and sometimes tan in the sun. You are susceptible to skin damage as well as cancers like basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. You are also at risk for melanoma, the deadliest type of skin cancer. Be sure to apply a sunscreen with SPF of at least 15+ every day, wear sun-protective clothing, and seek the shade between 10 AM and 4 PM, when the sun is strongest. Check your skin head-to-toe each month, paying careful attention to any suspicious growths, and make sure you have an annual professional skin check-up.

TYPE IV (19-24 POINTS): You tend to tan easily and are less likely to burn. But you are still at risk; use sunscreen with an SPF 15+ outside and seek the shade between 10 AM and 4 PM. Follow all other Prevention Tips from The Skin Cancer Foundation as well. Check your skin head-to-toe each month, paying careful attention to any suspicious growths, and make sure you have an annual professional skin check-up.

TYPE V (25-30 POINTS):

ADD UP YOUR GENETIC DISPOSITION AND SUN EXPOSURE TOTALS TO FIND YOUR FITZPATRICK SKIN TYPE:

EAT YOUR

Delights

THE RIGHT WAY Everyone loves to indulge in the delicious taste of sweets especially during the holy month of Ramadan. It adds to the enjoyment of Iftar and sweetens the holy season. But it is essential to point out that most of the sweets eaten during this time are made from flour, sugar, oil, ghee and nuts (Baklawa, Kunafa and Katayef). This brings us to the topic:

Is it OK to have sweets everyday? Yes you can, as long as they are eaten in moderation.

Can indulging in sweets be considered healthy? Yes, but only if they are prepared with minimum fat and less calories.

To make your sweets lower in calories and fats, try these tips: • Instead of buying or making kunafa with cream, prepare it with low fat cheese, and eat it without adding any sugar syrup. • Use low fat milk products. • Avoid using butter and ghee and substitute them with corn, sunflower or canola oil and in small amounts. • Don’t add honey or cream on cakes or puddings, use low calorie sugar instead. • Choose grilled or raw Katayef instead of fried ones. • Try to reduce the amount of nuts added on cakes and puddings, and substitute it with cinnamon powder when you can. • Try not to add sugar to juices and sugar icing to sweets. • Do not dip dumplings in sugar syrup.

Can Sweets be eaten immediately after Iftar? Eating sweets immediately after Iftar will increase the size of your stomach and will cause delay in digestion. It can also lead to fluctuation in the blood sugar level, which will lead to you craving for more sweets! That’s why, it is recommended to have it 2-3 hours after Iftar. Sweets can make this joyous season even more enjoyable, if consumed with discretion. Instead of 3 or 4, have just one portion of your favorite. This will give you a taste of what you like while making sure that you don’t overindulge. 88 insight

Cellini BENVENUTO

90 insight

Benvenuto Cellini was one of the enigmatic, larger-than-life figures of the Italian Renaissance: a celebrated sculptor, goldsmith, author and soldier who is considered the greatest goldsmith of the Italian Renaissance. He was also the author of the celebrated autobiography.

The son of an architect and musician, Benvenuto Cellini was born in Florence. He trained as a goldsmith and became profiecient early in that craft, at 16 he had to leave Florence because of a street fight and spent some months in Siena. In 1519 he moved to Rome, the centre of his activity for the next two decades. In Rome, Cellini served popes Clement VII and Paul III, working chiefly on portrait medallions, coins, and jewels. An increasingly tense relationship with Paul III and a series of violent incidents led to Cellini’s imprisonment in the Castel Sant’Angelo, from which he made a dramatic escape. The next storm cloud was imprisonment in 1537 on a charge (perhaps false) of stealing gems from a tiara of the Pope. Intervention by Cardinal d’Este of Ferrara (for whom he had created a silver cup) and others brought his release, and Cellini left Rome for the last time. Five productive years followed at Fontainebleau and Paris, as Cellini produced several of his most celebrated works, including a saltcellar (now in the museum at Vienna) and large silver statues (subsequently lost) of Jupiter, Vulcan and Mars. Characteristically, Cellini became embroiled in disputes with those around him and in 1545 he returned at last to his native Florence, where he remained until his death in 1571.

Interesting

facts

1

Given the immense pride that Benvenuto Cellini took in his talents, it is ironic that very few certain examples of his art as a sculptor exist today and that he is best known for his Autobiography.

Cellini played a remarkable role in the ultimately unsuccessful defense of Rome in 1527, slaying the Constable of Bourbon in one attack and later killing Philibert, Prince of Orange, as well. By his account Cellini was a notable fighter, and in the sack of Rome (1527) he fought against the imperial troops.

2

uch of Cellini’s notoriety, and perhaps Much even fame, derives from his memoirs, begun in 1558 and abandoned in 1562, which were published posthumously under the title The Autobiography of Benvenuto Cellini. As noted by one biographer, “His amours and hatreds, his passions and delights, his love of the sumptuous and the exquisite in art, his self-applause and self-assertion, make this one of the most singular and fascinating books in existence.”

3

Cellini’s autobiography served as the basis for an opera by Hector Berlioz, Benvenuto Cellini (1837); and even stimulated the production of films for the 20th century centred on this colourful life that seems to fulfill every demand of the romantic conception of the artist.

At Florence Cellini created one of the most celebrated works of his long career and one of the notable monuments of the Italian Renaissance, the bronze figure Perseus holding the Head of Medusa. Other acclaimed statuary of the period include Ganymede on the Eagle and a bust of Cosimo I de Medici, both now in the Bargello Museum in Florence.

Your personal life tends to overshadow your professional life or material activities during this cycle. On a more psychological level, you might increase your confidence in yourself and feelings of security during this period. Some of you could become closer with the in-laws during this period.

Your social life is busy and you should try to enjoy as much as you can. Networking is not only for business but can also further your social interests. If your health is good you should look after it. If you have health concerns or are ill you should consider alternative treatments, as they are more likely to help you regain your health. Don’t stress your heart and check your blood pressure.

A senior person in your life, might be a parent, is about to make some major financial changes. You are not sure they are doing the right thing and you should point this out to them. The world is undergoing financially turbulent times at the moment so any major financial changes should only be considered when proper advice have been taken.

You have been concerned about your health but a lot of that has been down to stress caused by all the solar eclipses this year. Health will improve but you must take it easy. Don’t let everyone dump his/ her problems by your door. You have a right to own your life, be happy in your fish bowl.

Stay away from anything you may consider stressful – honestly you don’t need the extra hassle this month. Focus on looking after your health and get rest and relaxation. Enjoy the summer and your good health. Do this in the following order – mind, body and financial affairs. Travel is also on the horizon.

You may have some goals in mind but you have not clearly visualized them yet so it might be a good idea to do so and write down your goals so you can cross them off your list once you have achieved them. Setting goals and reaching them will give you more personal freedom and a chance to do what you would like to do.

Are you planning a holiday Taurus? That is good because it is time to feed your mind. Think about what you are packing this summer and you may just want to stuff the suitcase with books rather than 20 different shirts or tops. Bring your mobile device as well at the moment you are hungry for knowledge. This is a good thing as knowledge might also set you thinking about new ventures.

Consider spending sometime with your partner and perhaps do something which broadens your horizons together. Take a course or go on a trip. Share an experience or perhaps even take up partner yoga. Consider anything that will give you both a focus and bring you closer together.

SC

US TA UR You might find that you travel less or not at all, and that you are busier locally. Your thinking is more upbeat, positive, and forward-looking, and so is the way you express yourself. In fact, this is an excellent time for improving your communication skills and your general attitude or mindset.

If you are a Scorpio student, or about to go to the university, think about your choice. Is this actually what you want to do, and do you feel passionately about this field to work in it for the rest of your life. Ask yourself if the choice you made earlier in the year is the right one. Do you actually believe in what you are doing?

You feel a bit like the world has been shook up and it has unsettled your soul. Force yourself to make some changes in your life, as this is the only way you will feel more positive about things. Your health and your energy levels will improve once you have made some changes but just in case try to get as much sleep as you can.
