One of the most famous meeting places in Zagreb and the words you will often hear from the locals - "Let's meet under the clock.", refer to the big clock positioned on the main city square. Delivered in 1920 from Vienna, it is a traditional meeting place and point of refference for Zagreb's citizens. Since 1953, the watchmaking family Lebarović has been in charge of maintainance of all city clocks. After the big clock on the main square, similar but smaller clocks were set in other locations throughout the city. The main city clock is about 8.5 meters high, weighs about 500 kilograms, and its base measures about 140x140 cm. It is powered throught the electricity of the street lights that also charge its battery for work during the daylight. The clock self adjusts via the radio signal, as well as for the change of summer and winter time.

SUSTAINABLE FASHION AND SELECTED ART

foreigners visiting Zagreb, it certainly does not exclude all those who want to buy Croatian design for themselves or as a gift.

What can we find in your little shop?

CROATYQUE, MAJA ČUPIĆ

Croatyque is a newly opened concept store in the heart of Zagreb. What is the vision and the concept of your store?

Croatyque was a logical next step after my rich, long-term experience in the position of brand manager for various brands in the region, where I felt the desire for personal fulfillment in establishing my own brand. The vision was to create a place where handmade products of Croatian designers will be offered together in one place, because this has proven to be a deficiency on the Croatian market, especially as an offer for tourists. To gather domestic designers in one place, and offer them to a wider audience, with the aim of promoting Croatian products – that is Croatyque! It is easier for joint forces to perform in a market that is small and in which the offer is not always at the premium quality. It is always challenging and almost impossible to compete with the big shopping giants, but with persistence, work and great sacrifice, you can definitely find a niche to offer high-quality products. Therefore, every customer is welcome in our cute little Croatyque. Although the primary target audience are

Croatyque in its business and in its name is the combination of words Croatia, Adriatic and Boutique, so in this direction I also curated our offer of domestic brands: Ruo linen handmade embroidery clothes, Unaesthetik knitwear, 757 natural cosmetic, Bilja designer notebooks, Dunja Ignis ceramics, Natalio luxury candles, Seng bike baskets, Maja Tomljanović and Mateja Kovač illustrations, The All jewelry, Greethings gift boxes, and our own brand of Croatyque products. These are brands whose assortment is entirely produced in Croatia.

Can you tell us something more about your long term goals for Croatyque brand?

The long-term goals of Croatyque go in two directions, one is to expand the offer of designers, and the other to develop the offer of the Coatyque range. Under our own brand you can find 100% cotton products, such as hoodies, t-shirts, hats, socks and bags. The models are excellent basics that do not follow trends and were created with the intention of being a part of your everyday style for years. From design to production, everything takes place in Croatia where we use only the best cotton currently available on our market and we take great care in the workmanship. The offer will also be available on the web shop, which will soon be up and running.

14 INSIGHTDESIGNGUIDE.COM
IN THESE interviews we present Croatian fashion designer Anamarija Brkić from A'marie and Maja Čupić owner of Croatyque boutique

A'MARIE, ANAMARIJA BRKIĆ

A'MARIE brand is wellknown for its sophisticated elegance, premium fabrics and often described as “Clothes made of dreams”! Can you tell us a bit more about your brand and about A'MARIE philosophy?

A’MARIE is a Croatian based, independent, woman owned and women’s ready-to-wear label with the mission to create and promote sustainable fashion. Our design fuses modern yet timeless everyday essentials with a feminine edge and we try to offer effortless but unique styling. Each piece we create tries to balance versatility and comfort, exquisite materials with character and sensuality. I think this versatility is the thing that sets our brand apart. We offer A’MARIE ready-to-wear and A’MARIE BASIC collections. Last year we created swimming suits made of recycled yarns and this year, for the first time we presented our A'DENIM line of organic jeans. Every piece of clothes or accessories we do here is a fine work of craftsmanship and we really do care that every piece comes out in the finest way and in the best way for our planet. Our collections are small, but unique. We have our flagship store which is located in Zagreb’s center and an online web shop. All production is made in Croatia. Everything is designed, planned and systematically controlled in Croatia as well. We put all our effort into making it sustainable.

As an independent fashion brand what challenges do you face in today's world of fast fashion and mass consumer goods?

In addition to all challenges, there is the issue of sustainability. As a sustainable fashion brand, we prioritize ethical production practices and the use of ecofriendly materials. However, this often comes at a higher cost, making it difficult to compete with fast fashion brands that prioritize profit over ethical and environmental considerations. Despite the challenges, we believe that there is a growing demand for sustainable and ethical fashion, and we are committed to promoting these values through our brand. We believe that by offering high-quality, ethically-produced clothing made from eco-friendly materials, we can attract consumers who value sustainability and ethical production practices, and build a loyal customer base. We also believe that by collaborating with other independent brands and promoting the values of slow fashion, we can make a positive impact in the fashion industry and contribute to a more sustainable future.

What can we find in your latest collection? How do you imagine A'MARIE lady looking like this summer?

We are just finishing our Summer Campaign. It is full of gorgeous swimming suits, pareos, beautiful summer accessories and all-day wearable unique dresses. This Collection ushers in the longawaited summer and a neverending day at the beach. And of course, our swimming suits are made entirely of recycled material ECONYL®, and are accompanied by the fact that it was produced in a 'zero waste' way, in cooperation with a local company that uses high-quality paints, with minimal consumption of water and electricity, as well as ink. I can’t wait for you to see it! :)

ZAGREB MARKETS

Zagreb has a vibrant and lively market culture. You can find farmers’ and flea markets all year around. Farmers’ markets are open every day and for most locals they serve as a great source of fresh meat, fish, veggies and fruits on a daily or weekly basis. Of course, markets are most crowded on Saturdays, which is the most usual day for visiting. Open daily from 6:30am to about 2pm except on National holidays.

Besides Dolac, you should not miss Sunday’s weekly Antique fair at the British Square, as well as Hrelić, a massive flea market in Jakuševac situated on the outskirts of the city - where you can get literally anything.

Zagreb also offers interesting, small pop-up markets presenting various artists, designers and small manufacturers, giving them a chance to present their work to the wider audience. These markets are great venues to meet designers in person and support small manufacturers. Check our webpage for more info and prior announcements.
