WELCOME/BIENVENUE Distance brings us closer together. La distance peut nous rapprocher.
T
he past couple of years have been, to a large extent, influenced and reshaped by the global pandemic. It has changed how we interact with one another, as countries closed their borders and physical distancing protocols were put into place. And yet, for many of us, distance has nourished relationships, bringing us even closer together. Through the power of new technology and the endurance of family and community values, we have navigated through physical separation and strengthened the bonds in our inner circles. In this issue of Insight: The Art of Living™, we examine the concept of distance and proximity in this new era, and how it has been redefined across the worlds of art and design, culture and community, as well as architecture and real estate. Follow the Met’s “Surrealism Beyond Borders” exhibition, as it travels to Tate Modern in London this spring, and find out how the arts have re-envisioned Surrealism as a global movement that transcends geography, chronology and cultures. Meet Diséiye Thompson, whose bespoke evening wear straddles Nigerian culture and her classical design training in Toronto. Then rediscover the joy of travel, as we take you to U.S.-Canada border towns well worth exploring. Within these pages and at sothebysrealty.ca, join our Realtors® and learn how Canadians seeking more living space to reinforce connections with family and friends are influencing real-estate trends across the country. And gain privileged access to premier properties that will energize you to enhance your own space for bolstering your connections and the lifestyle you aspire to. With this edition of Insight — “The Proximity Issue” — we offer inspiration as you build on those bonds and create opportunities for new connections.

If Swiss-born contemporary artist Nicolas Party is not on your radar yet, he soon will be. For his first solo exhibition in Canada, Party’s fantastical colourdrenched paintings, painted sculptures and installations are being showcased at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. On view are his massive oil pastel murals, created in situ, alongside a curated selection of works from the museum’s permanent collection. The nature-themed show — “L’heure mauve” — is a nod to the iconic painting by Ozias Leduc that references the fleeting purple haze of twilight hour. Quite apropos to Party’s penchant for depicting the enigmatic beauty of the natural world. mbam.qc.ca
Guo Pei, China’s first couturier, has been designing since the early ’90s, but the moment she first wowed the Western couture scene was in 2015, at the Met Gala. That was where pop star Rihanna made her appearance, clad in Guo’s magnificent embroidered golden yellow gown. Since then, there have been books, extensive media coverage and documentaries about the Beijing-born designer. Now, Guo has the distinction of having designed the first clothing piece to be auctioned by Sotheby’s as a work of art rather than a collector’s item. It took five years to complete Guo’s traditional Chinese bridal dress, handsewn with gold thread and 30 stitching techniques. More than 80 of this master couturier’s stunning designs are on exhibit at the Legion of Honor fine arts museum in Lincoln Park. legionofhonor.famsf.org

The New York theatre scene is back in full swing, and this contemporary version of Cyrano de Bergerac at the Brooklyn Academy of Music is generating serious buzz. It lends the classic love story a modern twist plus a new tempo, replete with beatboxing and rap. Cyrano’s poetic way with words is the star of the show, but actor James McAvoy’s magnetic stage presence brings the role to life. And though better known for his screen work in Hollywood blockbusters, including his portrayal of Charles Xavier in the X-Men series, McAvoy shines as he delivers Cyrano’s words with raw intensity and emotional grace. bam.org

Just across the German border from Basel, the celebrated Vitra Design Museum in the town of Weil am Rhein is itself a destination at any time of year. But what would make your visit a must to this Frank Lloyd Wright–designed, privately owned venue devoted to elevating furniture and interior design is the thought-provoking exhibition it mounted this spring. Curated with the Victoria & Albert Museum, “Plastic: Remaking Our World” chronicles how this versatile malleable material played a major role in shaping our daily lives, past and present. It also sets out the challenges facing designers, scientists and politicians seeking to utilize plastic in more sustainable ways for the future. design-museum.de

EASY LIKE SUNDAY
For Barbora Samieian, co-founder of furniture and décor company Sundays, Vancouver has options galore for coffee/cookie breaks and creative cues. By Jeremy Freed
W
hen Barbora Samieian was a child in Slovakia, Sundays were reserved for culture, food and family. “On Sunday afternoons, you go for coffee and cake and an art gallery visit with your grandma,” she says. Now a mother living in Vancouver with her husband, Moe Samieian Jr., and their four young children, Samieian still dedicates her Sundays to quality time with family. “After everybody’s up and has a bite to eat, we hit the Seawall, walk down to Granville Island and then over to Kitsilano…. We do it rain or shine. A lot of our ideas and next steps for the business come on those walks.” The elements of her perfect Sunday — family time, food, culture and a stroll — have been a source of inspiration for Sundays, the furniture and home décor company she co-founded. After living in New York, where a number of direct-toconsumer furniture brands successfully fill the void between Ikea and high-end designers, Samieian believed there was room for a similar business to thrive in Canada. “We saw an opportunity to hone in on a specific look and a specific price point that was married [to] good quality,” she says. Fortunately, Barbora married into a family that knows furniture. Moe grew up working at the Samieians’ furniture business, as had her sister-in-law, Sara Samieian. An old friend of Barbora’s, Noah Morse, brought a background in furniture design to the team (Morse is also a co-founder alongside the three Samieians). With Barbora’s knack for branding and strategy (honed at Field & Social, the popular Vancouver chain of salad restaurants she’d co-founded, in 2016, with Moe), the foursome had everything they needed to create a new category of Canadian furniture. Sundays launched in the summer of 2019 with a small selection of couches, chairs, coffee tables and rugs; a dining room collection was added the following year. Designed in Vancouver and crafted by suppliers in Asia and Europe, the carefully curated pieces are defined by sturdy

construction, the use of natural materials, and an elegant, modern style. This is furniture intended to be lived with — which the Samieians do, literally. They test each piece in their own homes with their families before approving it for production. And Sundays is growing. Riding the wave of homeowners opting for houseinterior upgrades, triggered by the pandemic’s lockdowns, it now offers a full suite of home furnishings, from beds to
credenzas to woven-cane room dividers, as well as rugs and cushions. The store has also expanded its brick-and-mortar presence with pop-up showrooms in Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary, giving customers the opportunity to experience the products in person. It’s all part of Barbora and her co-founders’ mission to share the relaxing, warm vibe of a perfect Sunday at home with family — one stylish furniture piece at a time.

This tiny gem of a bakery in Mount Pleasant turns out some of the best sourdough in the city, including Samieian’s preferred version, the Porridge Loaf. Over five years, Samieian’s visits to the studio of ceramicist Janaki Larsen, children in tow, led to a friendship as well as a creative partnership. “Her minimalist ceramics are in our home, throughout Field & Social and in many Sundays photo shoots,” she notes. “Her work and studio bring me true joy.” Samieian’s advice for acquiring one of Larsen’s highly coveted pieces: Follow the artist on Instagram, where she posts her latest drops. #110– 1706 West 1st Ave.; janakilarsenceramics.com
Samieian loves this Italian grocery and caffè on buzzy Commercial Drive for its takeout house-made, ready-to-serve pastas and meatballs or for brunch with a friend. “It’s like going back in time with a modern twist [and] a lovely atmosphere in a gorgeous, moody space.” Don’t miss out on La Tana’s Wine Bar, which opened last fall with a list of all-Italian wines and dinner served seven nights a week. 635 Commercial Dr.; caffelatana.ca
05 PUBLISHED ON MAIN A favourite date (or double-date) spot for Barbora and Moe, this Mount Pleasant restaurant boasts beautiful interiors as the backdrop for inventive sharing plates that emphasize local, seasonal ingredients. “We come here over and over again,” says Barbora. “The menu is always changing, although I believe the schnitzel is a staple. It’s delicious, and so are their cocktails!” 3593 Main St.; publishedonmain.com

WALK ON THE WILD SIDE C
hef Tracy Little’s Instagram handle is @WildLittleChef — clearly a play on her surname, but also a clever summation of what makes her tick, both personally and professionally. Raised in northern Alberta, near the city of Fort McMurray, Little grew up hunting and foraging with her forester father, first because it was practical — why spend money at the grocery store when there’s perfectly good food growing and available right beside you? Later, the young culinarian developed an appreciation for food that tells a story about the place it comes from. That passion for hyper-local food that evokes a multi-sensory experience is the driving force behind Sauvage, Little’s fine-dining spot in Alberta, in the mountain town of Canmore, just east of Banff National Park. Like many Canadian chefs, Little started with a fairly conventional path towards professional cooking. She went to culinary school and began paying her dues in restaurant kitchens. She eventually landed in the kitchen of the remote,
16
luxurious Milton Lake Lodge in northern Saskatchewan, where she took to foraging ingredients to fill in the gap between food deliveries and add some extra flair to the menu. Later, after heading back south, Little spent some time in what she calls “regular restaurants” — most notably, Rouge, in Calgary — but city living didn’t suit her and she couldn’t resist the call of the mountains. What Little jokingly refers to as “the full Tracy experience” emerged in 2019, at The Sensory, in Canmore. There, as executive chef, she helped launch the upscale restaurant and impressed adventurous eaters with her tasting menus, including the three-course gourmet meal simply called “Trust Me.” But the journey towards Sauvage really began in 2020, when Little’s family assisted her in purchasing Tapas, a well-established and much-beloved restaurant in Canmore. To play it safe, she stuck with the restaurant’s name and Spanish concept, hinting at what was to come with a high-concept, mountainthemed tasting menu that in-the-know
diners enjoyed while those at the tables next to them dined on traditional croquetas and patatas bravas. “I called it the boil-a-frog method because we made the changes at Tapas so slowly that people didn’t realize we were turning up the temperature on them,” Little confides. She finally took the plunge and rebranded Tapas as Sauvage in September 2021. While à la carte offerings remain, the real star of the show is the tasting menu — an ever-changing multi-course meal that takes diners on a virtual walk through the forest and evokes the smells, sights and flavours of the Rocky Mountains. Sauvage’s food is not rustic. Little’s style falls into the tradition of fine dining, though she uses classic techniques on uniquely mountain-sourced ingredients. >

“Sauvage has given me more confidence to just put myself out there, and all of a sudden what I’m doing is being accepted.” — Tracy Little
Chicken, beef and conventional pork are out, as these meats aren’t usually farmed sustainably or indigenous to the Bow Valley, where Canmore is situated. Instead, the chef opts for bison, elk, wild boar, freshwater fish and yak, all sourced from small farms that she trusts. And while animal proteins are an important part of the menu, Little also gets considerable fanfare for her clever use of
foraged ingredients. Utilized as garnishes or flavour enhancers, the found ingredients — such as spruce, lovage, wild caraway and mint — appear alongside traditional fine-dining indulgences like truffle, demiglace and mimolette cheese. Little and her kitchen staff (and, usually, also her border collie, who is always keen for exercise) go on daily foraging excursions, sometimes up to higher elevations, to look for wild lichen, though she notes there are plenty of goodies too, lurking in the empty lots and riverbanks of the town, invisible to those without her expert eye. “Foraging is a lot like cooking in that you are constantly learning,” Little explains. “If I’m confused by something, I won’t feed it to other people until I’m absolutely sure it’s safe. It’s not like riding a bicycle because if you don’t keep [in mind] what ingredients look like and what they taste like, you’ll forget.” Not everyone loves Little’s wild-first
approach — she says she’s had guests walk out after seeing the menu — but having her own place means she can stick to her beliefs, which include honouring environmental sustainability and indigenous ways of eating. Beyond that, her vision has always been about creating that taste of place and offering visitors a completely immersive way to experience the land that is so dear to her own heart. Sauvage can only exist exactly where it is — if Little was cooking anywhere else, the food and the feeling wouldn’t be the same. “[Sauvage] has given me more confidence to just put myself out there, and all of a sudden what I’m doing is being accepted,” Little says. “When I’m feeding visitors who are experiencing the mountains for the first time, it’s an opportunity for me to really give them that sense of indelible awe because they can either eat an ingredient that they’ve walked by or taste, more deeply, where they are.”

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX Looking for more separation between your home’s work and live spaces? Sotheby’s International Realty Canada Realtors® suggest considering customized outbuildings on your property. By Eric Mutrie
N
owadays our homes have become increasingly multi-functional. We use them as offices and gyms and for spending time with family, as well as an escape to relax and rejuvenate during these unprecedented times. And many homeowners are also seeking clearer physical boundaries between their work and live spaces. “People want one site that will meet all their needs,” says Barb Richardson, Senior Vice-President of Sales at Sotheby’s International Realty Canada. “But the main issue is not just needing to work from home. It’s also about needing to be away

from others while you’re working at home.” There are viable options for homeowners who want their workplace, exercise space or recreation venue out of the house, literally, though not off-property — a bunkie in the backyard, perhaps a suite atop the garage or even a customized outbuilding. “It’s kind of this desire to create your own homestead,” notes Richardson. With the WFH movement’s continued impact on our daily lives, individuals are faced with the task of determining how best they can delineate the work aspect from the leisure part of their lives at home. We tapped into the expertise of Sotheby’s
International Realty Canada real estate brokers in Toronto, Oakville, Montreal and Calgary for guidance on how to restore order, calm and balance in our every day, as well as enhance the value of our homes.
TORONTO
“We used to say that three things sell a house: location, location, location,” says Richard Silver, who leads Silver Burtnick & Associates at Sotheby’s International Realty Canada. “Now it’s more about ‘Could I hibernate there?’ ” A house with a complementary outbuilding allows for a conveniently

easy change of scenery and counteracts urban cabin fever. But according to Silver, while the idea of a second structure on one’s property may be novel to many nine-tofive professionals, it has long had a loyal following among those in Toronto’s arts community. “I know of a number of painters who have put skylights into a large garage for a studio,” he says. The Canadian contemporary artist Charles Pachter, for one, converted a laneway garage behind his downtown house to function not just as a studio, but also as a gallery. “For a laneway space, you’d need to consult someone like Marty Steele of Laneway Housing Advisors,” Silver advises. If you’re after a more modest backyard hideout, he recommends The Abode, who are bunkie-builder specialists.
OAKVILLE
In the lakeside Toronto suburb of Oakville, where there are local restrictions on additional structures on properties, residents opt to repurpose existing spaces in their homes. According to Petrus Engelbrecht, a Senior Vice President of Sales at Sotheby’s International Realty Canada, his clients in Oakville view outbuildings as summer amenities that maximize the use of backyards and, as well, increase the value of their properties. Here, homeowners frequently go for sheltered alfresco dining areas and poolside cabanas with retractable canvas walls. Another option, Engelbrecht reports, is adding a fireplace open on one side, which allows for three-season use of the outdoor space. Garden sheds are also becoming popular. “If you have a double garage but are using one side for gear storage or as a home gym, one car still ends up outside,” he points out. The solution: a secondary, free-standing storage shed to house equipment and miscellaneous notimmediately-needed items.
MONTREAL
Sotheby’s International Realty Canada Realtor® Cassandra Aurora notes that Quebec’s winters have prevented many homeowners from embracing the concept of backyard office bunkies, and zoning bylaws do not permit heated secondary buildings. “You don’t want to have to put on your boots for those few steps to go to your office outside,” she notes. “Some people would rather just stay in their pyjamas and work from home.” But for those committed to a multipurpose, multi-property compound, there are occasional listings that fit the bill — i.e.,

in areas with more-accommodating zoning, like the West Island residential suburb of Montreal. “In Saint-Lazare and Hudson, I see more clients putting atop a garage, loft space for a gym or office,” says Aurora. In the case of one rare gem of a property, the homeowner renovated and re-insulated a former barn to create additional living space.
that this type of construction is zoningcompliant only in neighbourhoods like Currie Barracks, in the city’s southwestern edge, and McKenzie Towne, in the southeast. She advises Calgarians looking to add free-standing buildings on their properties to turn to bunkie builders ModBox Studios and Modern Huts.

As Calgary continues to expand beyond its traditional oil-and-gas roots, so does the real estate market. “We’re becoming a bit of a tech-and-medical hub,” Barb Richardson reports. “And we’re seeing a lot of people cash out of other markets to come here.” In line with this hiring boom are home buyers eager to snap up spacious properties that can accommodate hybridwork arrangements. In Calgary many of the outbuildings in properties are carriage houses that function as garages, says Richardson, and homeowners build additional living spaces above them. She points out, however,

LIVE LARGE Extended families find ways to house multi generations, whether it’s large parcels of land and multiple lots or reconfiguring home layouts. By Katherine Laidlaw

hen Megan McLeod was looking for a farm to buy in the Muskoka region where she lives and works, she knew she wasn’t the only one searching for a large property. She was part of a broader uptick in buyers seeking properties that would accommodate multi-generational families. For McLeod, a Senior Vice-President of Sales at Sotheby’s International Realty Canada, the sprawling 10-acre farm she bought is perfect. It will allow her to keep her aging parents close by, and because the acreage is large enough — and zoned accordingly — a second, smaller home can be built on it. “My mother would be on the same property and she’d have her independence

and space, but I’d be just steps away,” says McLeod, who is a certified home stager. For the last year and a half, she reports, there has been a trend back to bigger spaces that would house multiple generations under one roof. However, Sotheby’s International Realty Canada real estate broker® Herbie Ratsch in Quebec forewarns those on the lookout for large parcels of land with multiple dwellings on-site. According to Ratsch, they’re likely to encounter an “incredibly low supply” of such properties. But that’s not a reason to be deterred, he assures them. “Is there the perfect design right now? No. Can you build it? Yes, you can — by having multiple lots or larger parcels of land.” For example, instead of having a single
five-bedroom home, his own property in Mont-Tremblant, in the Laurentians, has a three-bedroom main house and a twobedroom antique log cabin that he restored to its former glory. Over the past two years, the rustic hideaway — replete with a stone fireplace and an elk-antler chandelier — has functioned, in turns, as guesthouse, home office and Covid-bubble accommodations,

depending on his family’s needs. “Where we are, the ski hill is the bullseye. At the ski hill, you can get one or two acres. Then a bit farther, land goes up to three to five acres. Within a 20-minute drive from the ski hill, you can get thousands of acres,” says Ratsch. “I’ve got two properties that are 100 percent private lakes — sites that make for a megafamily compound.” In Alberta, in a market like Canmore, where space is limited and outbuildings are rare, homeowners are addressing the problem of housing their extended families through interior layout changes. In one household, for example, the owners converted the lower level of their 10,000-square-foot home to a grandkidsonly zone. “It’s going to be the family mountain retreat,” notes Chris Vincent, a Senior Vice-President of Sales at Sotheby’s International Realty Canada. With eight custom built-in bunks, pocket doors dividing the washroom, and a games room off the bunk room, the kids’ area is perfect for letting the family’s younger generation run wild. “The adults can be upstairs at the bar [overlooking mountain vistas],” says Vincent. “The kids don’t need those views.” Meanwhile, in Ontario’s Muskoka
region, large families are innovating in much the same way — indoors. At one property, situated along Mississauga Lake in the Kawarthas, four identical suites were designed to house four visiting adult children with families. “Each suite has a master, a kids’ bedroom, balcony, bathroom and a view of the lake,” says McLeod. “Nobody’s fighting over which room they get on the weekend. They all get the same view and their own two Muskoka chairs out on the balcony!” There’s another great benefit to owning a property with wide open spaces. Homeowners can get creative about how to use it. According to McLeod, during the pandemic, there has been a trend among her clients toward self-sufficiency, which surprised her — and was contagious. “That’s why I bought my farm,” McLeod admits, laughing. “I can survive on my veggies and my eggs if I have to.” It’s an ethos shift that’s happening across the country and finding its way into how people use their recreational properties, too. “A lot of people are looking to the future,” says Gina Stockwell, a Senior Vice-President of Sales at Sotheby’s International Realty Canada, on B.C.’s Sunshine Coast. “We have lots of farms
[here] and I’m finding that, because of Covid, there are people wanting to be more self-sufficient. I think we’re going to be seeing that now, [given] the extreme weather we’ve been having, and inflation. It’s really disrupting the supply chain.” Stockwell says too that, alongside the garden beds lush with vegetables are chicken coops, workshops and wells at the properties of her clients who are after a truly off-grid experience. She is also noticing that more and more homeowners are setting up yurts for house guests as a way to maximize the local mild climate and wide range of outdoor-adventure options, whether it’s golfing for the grandparents or sending the grandkids to rip down the mountain bike park. And at day’s end, there’s no better place for a multi-generational family to gather and create generations of memories than a beautiful expansive space. Another bonus is the area’s proximity to the ocean and the mountains, so there will always be a fantastic view. “You can have it all,” says Stockwell, “which is pretty fantastic!” Discover the perfect home in Canada’s top vacation destinations in our Real Estate section or at sothebysrealty.ca.

RELEARN, REBUILD, REBOOT Actor Andrew Phung talks about his career past, present and future and how he keeps things close to home. By Amber Dowling
C
algary kid Andrew Phung never thought he’d be a TV star. He was interested in performing, sure, but he never saw himself represented onscreen. In his experience, here in North America, diversity has been, so often, relegated to the supporting characters. “I went to university thinking I was going to work [at] a corporate job with a regular nine-to-five, but I kept chasing and grinding out comedy on the side,” Phung says. “I had dug out a career doing improv and corporate master of ceremonies [emceeing].” He may have continued on that path had he not met Ins Choi in 2016, the creator of Kim’s Convenience, while touring at the Edmonton International Fringe Festival with his own show Kill Hard. Choi encouraged him to audition, and not only did Phung land the part of Kimchee Han on Kim’s Convenience, which eventually became a CBC series, he went on to win four Canadian Screen Awards for the role over the course of five seasons. By Season 3, the 38-year-old sneaker aficionado had moved his family to Toronto — his wife, Tamara Sharpe, a teacher; and his two sons. So, Phung was just as surprised and disappointed as fans were when Kim’s Convenience came to an abrupt end in April 2021 (despite a Season 6 renewal), after Choi and co-creator Kevin White exited the series. Shortly
24
thereafter, the accolades of diversity turned to criticism, when some cast members expressed concerns that storylines in the final season were culturally inaccurate. Now a year, post-cancellation, Kim’s Convenience is a prime example of how far diversity in Canadian television has come, as well as a reminder of how much work still needs to be done in building inclusivity from the ground up. “I had nothing but wonderful experiences on the show and working with everyone there,” Phung notes. “[But] everyone had a different experience and some people’s experiences weren’t so great. I respect [and stand] with those cast members.” And although the end of Kim’s Convenience was sad for Phung, it was also good timing. His own TV series, Run the Burbs, had already been ordered to premiere at CBC in 2022, and his original intent was to do both shows. But because he’s the co-creator, one of the head writers and an executive producer, as well as the star of his sitcom about a stay-at-home father in the suburbs, Run the Burbs turned out to be a massive undertaking. “My background is in improv comedy, and that’s all about failing and believing in yourself and trying,” Phung says, referring to making the leap from supporting actor to running the show. “That’s always my mentality with everything. Aren’t we all in over our heads often? As a parent, I feel that way, too. A lot of the time there’s no rulebook
and you figure it out along the way. So, much like parenting and my improv career, I jumped into it and did it as best as I could.” Run the Burbs is also a full-circle moment for Phung. He’s grateful but, as well, acutely aware of the opportunity to spark real change behind the scenes and build on the positives that Kim’s Convenience started. “I realized [that] the thing I can do is look at what came out of that show. This is what was great. Let’s continue doing this. Here are some things that could have been done better, Andrew. You can do those things. [Now] I have my own show.” To build a set that was truly inclusive, welcoming and in sync with the characters in Phung’s new TV series — a modern suburban Vietnamese-South AsianCanadian family — the team hired two cultural consultants, one Vietnamese and one South Asian. They also put best practices into place both onscreen and off, with the goal of creating a show that is relatable and funny, as well as inclusive and respectful on the back end. “That’s a win for everybody,” Phung points out.“This might be my only shot to ever make my own television show, so I put all my effort into it. My hope is that we take Kim’s Convenience as a learning opportunity. We don’t hide from it. We don’t run away from it. We ask what we can do to be better. I hope that I’ve been able to do that, and I will continue to do that on [Run the Burbs] — and any project going forward.”

NEW WAVE WEAVES
A new generation of artisans shares the ins and outs of weaving cane, cord, grasses and leather to add texture and warmth to contemporary furniture. By Margot Austin

onsider the recent re-emergence of wicker. Although the term is of Scandinavian origin — vika in Swedish means “to bend” and vikker translates as “willow” — this weaving method dates back to ancient Egypt, some 5,000 years ago, when woven furniture was crafted with reeds and swamp grasses. Lightweight and durable, wickerwork has been widely used and prized throughout history, but it was in the damp, dusty Victorian era that wicker furniture, viewed as more hygienic than upholstery, soared in popularity. Then, during the Second World War, when rattan and seagrass were in short supply, furniture makers turned to the strong threeply Danish cord as a substitute. Later, woven pieces fell out of favour when they became associated with the fusty wicker tables and chairs that an older generation relegated to rec rooms and rickety sun porches. The tide has since turned. Wicker is back, but this time, with a focus on how

natural materials and traditional weaving methods enhance the spare elegance of mid-century modern, Scandinavian and Shaker-influenced furniture pieces. Wovens tick many boxes for homeowners nowadays. A global pandemic has inspired us to feather our nests with inviting furniture, and wicker’s warm, textured organic surfaces fit the bill, alongside its sustainability and how it supports local artisans. In sync with the wicker trend, Canadian companies have been incorporating natural materials, such as cane and grasses, as well as Danish cord and leather, into innovative designs.
table, side tables–cum–stools and pendant light shades. “Our cane pieces are made by Júlia and Sergio,” says Williams. “Júlia’s father was a weaver of traditional fishing baskets. She married Sérgio, who started weaving too, and their family keeps the tradition alive.” The chair and coffee table are revivals of mid-century styles that the family has been crafting for decades. “We love how the basket-style seat is separate from the base, allowing you to change the pitch,” notes Williams. The pendant shades are new designs conceived along the way, as Williams and Pimentel learned about more weaving options for the cane material. “For us,” says Williams, “it’s always about simple modern shapes and collaborating with the craftspeople to come up with something hands-on that works.”

the warmth and irregularity of woven cord is a strong contrast with the materials of cold minimalism.” The Captain’s Table, introduced in 2018, was actually inspired by the original Danish cord associated with Danish mid-century modern furniture. “The [table’s] design features an original approach to weaving around a triangle form,” explains Hamilton Holmes. “I experimented until I found a way to support the piece both structurally and aesthetically.” That design, which is available as a coffee table and as accent tables, is a mix of wood, marble and cord. For the OS Chair and Shoreman’s Bench, he employs a traditional basket-weave technique for the seats, which provides more flex and comfort than a wood seat. “But the real benefit is aesthetic,” he says. “Danish cord looks nice and feels nice to touch and experience.”
STUDIO LANI
Lani Adeoye, who has lived and worked in New York, Toronto and Lagos, currently divides her time between the latter two cities. This McGill University grad founded
Studio Lani in 2017 and has garnered critical acclaim for her sculptural-lighting and furniture creations. Adeoye’s work has been featured in Elle Decor, Architectural Digest, Dwell and Design Milk. Her art celebrates West African traditions and techniques, filtered through her own contemporary sensibilities. The Talking Stool, for example, is constructed in the familiar tabouret format but with an unconventional twist. Sculpted floor
matting, woven from locally grown grasses by craftswomen in Nigeria, provides comfortable “upholstery” seating. “The material is sustainable and has a timeless appeal,” notes Adeoye. “It adds that human artisanal vibe to spaces.” Leather accents are applied using traditional shoe-making methods. Her collection also includes the graceful Bata Stool with its woven-leather seat, sculptural legs and leather-wrapped metal frame.

Comprised of eight talented makers, Atelier Arking is led by J. H. Moon, who founded this collective in 2008, in Flamborough, a community within the city of Hamilton. The studio’s refined creations, which are much sought after by the interior-design trade, offer a full range of furniture — seating, tables, benches and beds, including cane and woven-leather pieces. “Functionally, woven material is the [most lightweight] solution [to cushion] a rigid surface,” explains Moon. “At the same time, visually, it has a geometric aesthetic that works nicely with raw materials like wood, steel and even stone.” The Shaker-inspired Ga-on Stool has a woven canvas-ribbon seat, while the Cavalier Nightstand comes with a woven-leather bottom shelf. An optional cane headboard for the Miros lends a sense of lightness as a counterpoint to the bed’s sturdy proportions.

Fashion creative Diséiye Thompson talks custom clothing and cinematic ambitions. By Odessa Paloma Parker
T
hough Diséiye Thompson hasn’t been back to her native country of Nigeria in 11 years, this Toronto-based creative still feels a strong connection to her beginnings there. Nigeria isn’t only where her family has roots; it’s also where Thompson’s interest in design was piqued. “Growing up, I was inspired by the women around me,” Thompson says of how the colourful, patterned traditional Nigerian attire fostered a love of fashion from an early age. “It was such a norm for us to get clothes custom-made for every special occasion, and for Christmas, we would get new clothing. So, it was ingrained in me — this desire for fashion, for custom clothing. And I’ve always known that I wanted to pursue this as a career.” The path towards achieving that goal wasn’t entirely straightforward, though. According to Thompson, the aspiration to study fashion design wasn’t seen by the family as acceptable, and it wasn’t until >

she was studying law at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo that the creative pull became undeniable. Transferring to Ryerson University in Toronto, she started doing more fashion and arts courses and, after a certain period of time, she decided that “fashion was the thing for me.” Going on to apprentice at the Greta Constantine studio of design duo Kirk Pickersgill and Stephen Wong and at bridal boutique Lea-Ann Belter, Thompson refined the craft of gala-worthy finery. In 2016, she launched the eponymous label Diséiye Thompson with a collection that embodies what she describes as an “exuberance of style.”
32
Fabrics, such as frothy tulle, and embellishments, like feathers and fringes, are trademarks of Thompson’s work, so it’s no wonder she has dressed the likes of rapper and TV series Hustle in Brooklyn cast member Azia Toussaint and R&B duo dvsn in noteworthy garb. Toussaint has been spotted in a lavish black-and-gold floral strapless gown by Thompson, as well as examples of the atelier’s vibrant tailoring-with-a-twist (think exaggerated silhouettes and colour blocking). And for the abolitionist, activist and storyteller Ravyn Wngz, Thompson designed a sumptuous full-sleeved dress complete with plunging neckline and a multihued paintbrush-stroke-patterned fabric.
Thompson also continues to be tapped to create bold, big day designs for weddings. Anyone who wants all eyes on them would immediately view Thompson as the go-to for sartorial statement–making. About onethird of the typical 15-plus custom clients the designer works for within a year are for wedding apparel. “I’ve been fortunate enough to be surrounded by a community that nurtures my growth and nurtures my creativity,” Thompson says of how word-of-mouth has developed the atelier’s clientele. “I get a lot of referrals from people that I’ve worked with in the past. And the people that come to me for [bridal] — they don’t come expecting the traditional idea of what a wedding dress should look like.” Thompson’s custom practice includes “working with queer couples that have other ideas” when it comes to how they want to look for their nuptials. This means that wedding looks developed in the Diséiye studio have included neon pink and green suiting. “I love that the people who gravitate toward me already understand what I do — and the difference in what I do.” Pointing to Lady Gaga as a pop-culture icon whose outré style helped introduce the atelier to the creations of era-defining designers — such as Alexander McQueen, Jean Paul Gaultier and Yohji Yamamoto — Thompson notes that, as the Diséiye brand has evolved to meet different client needs, so too has the commitment to find the balance between staying true to the label’s dramatic, occasionally avant-garde leanings while creating sellable, indelible wares.

“Being queer and moving to Canada, I automatically gravitated towards the Black, queer kids who were creating community for themselves through SOY.” “I want to create pieces that, 30 or 40 years from now, I’ll find in vintage stores in good condition, or [I’ll find that they’ve been] passed down through generations. That’s why everything is made-to-order. I want everything to mean something to someone.” Thompson cultivates a larger creative network through styling and designing

costumes for other, non-commercial endeavours. Early this year, for instance, she found herself making clothing pieces for the Toronto Dance Theatre — a project spearheaded by a previous custom client, artist and activist Rodney Diverlus. She is also a godmother for American designer Christian Siriano’s kiki house in Toronto — a role she revels in. It lets Thompson maintain her connection to the kiki scene, which provides LBGTQ youth a surrogatefamily network within the kiki ballroom culture of dance, runway and performanceart competitions. “Being queer and moving to Canada, I automatically gravitated towards the Black, queer kids who were creating community for themselves through SOY,” Thompson says, referring to the Supporting Our Youth
program at Sherbourne Health, which serves the diverse communities in southeast Toronto. “I joined the programs there and got the resources I needed. But I also got to meet all these wonderful people who introduced me to the ballroom scene. I’ve been part of that community for a few years now and it’s given me the opportunity to explore my creativity in different ways.” One such creative direction has been about making pieces for dancers, like Danah Rosales, who wore a Thompsoncrafted bright red open-backed frock for an event where the designer partnered with Toronto boutique Brosche Bridal. Another of the label’s creations was the voluminous tiered tangerine gown — with outsized ruff led sleeves, of course — that f launted Rosales’s baby bump for a maternity photoshoot. The pandemic obviously presented challenges in terms of being physically present for fellow voguers, Thompson notes, via Zoom, from the light-filled minimalist space that’s also the designer’s home studio. But, in some ways, absence has made the heart grow fonder. Keeping in touch through social media is maintained. “We have a lot of group chats…even if it’s just saying ‘Good morning’ [or] telling someone to have a good day. It’s just that connection that keeps us interested in each other’s lives and wanting to grow together.” After all, growth, both personal and professional, is a key element of Thompson’s self-motivation. I ask, “If you could do anything in the future, what would that be?” The answer comes quickly, assuredly. “I want to make a film,” Thompson says, eyes gleaming. “I’m very much inspired by the movies that Tom Ford has made, bringing fashion into film in different ways that are not just ‘fashion films’ for commercial [purposes]. And I’m finding my way into that space. The more I desire to do this, the more I think about it. I think it’s going to come into fruition. “It’s storytelling and I have a lot of stories to tell. I have a lot of history. And finding different ways to tell those stories excites me.”

ike many artistic children, young William Fisk wasn’t thriving in the mainstream academic environment. When he was expelled from middle school, in the early ’80s, his mother — looking to focus his creativity and keep him out of trouble — enrolled him in Claude Watson School for the Arts. This public arts-education school in Toronto deftly attended to both his rebelliousness and his talent, with Fisk happily illustrating yearbook covers while at the desk he occupied regularly in the principal’s office. It was just over a decade later, when Fisk would stroll out of OCAD University — a gifted painter with a BA in fine arts — and straight into the Christopher Cutts Gallery, one of Toronto’s leading art venues. the 24-year-old straight out of school, Christopher Cutts, the gallery’s namesake curator, would mount, between 1995 and 2001, six solo exhibitions of Fisk’s work, five of which sold out. “I was utilizing images from media and disparate sources, thinking about constructed dialogues, how context controls the narrative,” Fisk says of his work at the time, citing Robert Longo, John Baldessari and David Salle as his influences. With his studio costs covered by the late collector and arts patron Gordon Eberts — OCAD’s prize for emerging artists was named after Eberts — Fisk would, in 1998, land on what would become his signature style. “Two panels, oil on canvas,” says Fisk, now 53. “When I was working on it, I was, like, that…is fucking great!” The artist is pointing at a photo of the painting tacked onto his studio wall — a large canvas split between two images: a mid-century chair and a woman’s face. The “fucking great” was for the chair. “It was one of those intuitive moments that’s part of the flow… and grew into this,” he enthuses. “This” is a slowly-expanding, two-decade oeuvre focused on outsized, ultra-realistic images of everyday objects. Cameras and clocks, rotary phones, a vintage taxi meter — each was pulled from Fisk’s select assemblage of mid-century paraphernalia and so meticulously rendered that, from even a few feet away, they read as photographs. Just don’t call it photorealism. “Intent is what differentiates my work from photorealism,” Fisk explains. He’s standing by the huge window of his sunny studio on Toronto’s west side. “It’s a concise application, the careful construction of a photographic image, but it’s not the predetermined end point. It’s a reference point that continues the story — this idea of the object as a springboard for an unknown narrative. [It’s] how you can look at an old camera and wonder: How many weddings were photographed with that? How many holidays?” he says. “[Fisk] is more properly called a Precisionist,” says Donald Kuspit, the preeminent American art critic and historian, in the 2018 exhibition catalogue of Fisk’s work. “The Old Precisionist was preoccupied with objects…. The New Precisionist, epitomized by Fisk, is concerned with their subjective, ‘all too human’ meaning. Exquisitely rendered, his objects are not as soulless as they seem. [They] have ‘personality’ despite their impersonal appearance.” Either way, it’s precisely that exactitude, alongside the nostalgia evoked by Fisk’s >

chosen objects, relics of simpler times, that make his work so accessible. Ideally, a viewer understands the subtext of his work, but with talent and technique as well defined as the subject matter, Fisk’s paintings can be appreciated just as well in an utterly guileless manner. “Fisk has an extraordinary ability for capturing light and reflection, but the work is deeper than a mere exercise in technique,” says David Liss who has admired Fisk’s work since the late ’90s, around, around the time he arrived from Montreal to accept the director/curator position at Toronto’s Museum of Contemporary Art. “It’s easy to be impressed by his skill in rendering images so realistically, but the exaggerated scale is not realistic at all, which is a key factor in interpreting the work. That the objects portrayed are primarily antiquated technologies means that they will be perceived differently by different people. For some, it will be an experience in memory and nostalgia; for others, a history lesson. These are analogue artifacts. There’s an opportunity to appreciate the aesthetic beauty of the engineering and design, and to recall another era, when we controlled technology, unlike today, where technology has infiltrated every aspect of our lives.” New Classism, Refined Objectivism, New Precisionism, Illusionism — whatever you want to label his art, Fisk’s creative shift to portraits of objects garnered him solo shows at leading contemporary galleries, like Forum in New York and L.A.’s Bernarducci. Departing Christopher Cutts in 2007, Fisk jumped to Nicholas Metivier and then, in 2019, began repping himself. Painting five hours a day, it takes Fisk two to four months to finish a canvas. He turns out fewer than five paintings each year, which are priced by scale and complexity. Smaller works start at $20,000, while a more extravagantly sized 120” x 65” piece runs $90,000. A painting of a rotary phone leaning against a wall is off to a buyer in Southampton, N.Y., and Fisk has a commission with a client in the Bahamas, who has bought three paintings and has his eye on a fourth. Closer to home, National Ballet star Greta Hodgkinson owns a Fisk, and prominent lawyer Clayton Ruby was among the artist’s first buyers. Interior designer Brian Gluckstein owns several of his works, including a large image of a 1935 Kodak camera that once hung in the office of Peter Boris, executive vice-president of Pace Gallery in Manhattan. “Before social media, you needed access and the only access was through a gallery. Now all I need is a website,” says Fisk, who, two

Fortuitous timing. Just a few months later, a global pandemic would replace champagne vernissage and buzzy galleries with solo studio visits. Two years on, with the world starting to reopen, his work is once again on public display. “We fell in love with Fisk’s paintings,” says Jim Shedden, referencing Alexa Greist, his co-curator for a major show at the Art Gallery of Ontario, featuring Fisk’s works alongside those of Hockney, Haring, Oldenburg, Warhol and Basquiat. “[From] cave paintings to TikTok, the
exhibit looks at the human impulse to document our everyday lives and to share that documentation with family, extended family or larger audiences,” Shedden says of “I AM HERE: Home Movies and Everyday Masterpieces,” which runs from April 16 to August 14, 2022. “Subtly abstracted” is his description of Polaroid Painting No. 2, one of the works Fisk selected for the exhibit. “It’s an exquisite representation of an everyday object,” Shedden adds. “Things were once built with integrity, built to last, to be passed down, designed and produced so incredibly well. Not like
now, [when] everything’s disposable,” notes Fisk. “I choose whatever speaks to me, anything that strikes me. I photograph it, blow it up to various scales, and pick one to paint. Usually, a client will drop by, see something being realized and buy it.” Of being approached about commissions, for which there is a year-long waiting list, Fisk says, “Most of the time, I turn that down.” But not always. Like when figure skater champion Kurt Browning arrived at his studio with a pair of old binoculars, explaining they’d belonged to his father, a trapline hunter from Alberta’s Rocky Mountains. Then, commissioning a second piece, Browning brought in the skates he’d worn for the Olympics. Photographing them from all sides, Fisk ended up painting them from underneath, focused on the metal blades, screws and underpinnings. “It’s the ‘idea’ of an object, how we view it in reference to time and memory — or absence of memory. When someone asks me to paint something, what I do is have a look at it and think, Will this fit into the series of works? I’ve been doing it for 20 years…. There are only 104.” And with that, having devoted an hour of his day to this interview, it’s time for William Fisk to get back to No. 105.

THE REAL SURREALISM
An irreverent 20th-century cultural movement is connecting with today’s collectors, artists, designers and architects. By Rhonda Riche
E
ver bold and unabashedly brazen, Surrealism, the artistic and literary movement founded by the poet André Breton in Paris in the early 1920s, has held on to its mission: revolutionize the human experience by juxtaposing a rational depiction of the everyday with images and symbols from the unconscious realm. And unlike many art movements, its influence has not faded. Much of modern art — from Montreal’s artistic dissidents, the Automatistes, to New York’s Abstract Expressionists, post–Second Word War — owes a tip of the hat to the irreverence of the Surrealist movement. In an age of virtual reality, smartphones and artificial intelligence, sometimes it feels as though we’re living in a waking dream. In this sense, Surrealism has never felt as relevant as it does now. And the art world is taking notice. Last November, Frida Kahlo’s arresting self-portrait in 1949 — Diego y yo (Diego and I) — sold for US$34.9 million at Sotheby’s
40
auction house in New York, shattering the artist’s previous high of US$8 million (Two Nudes in the Forest, 1939). While she did not label herself as a Surrealist, Kahlo was a fervent admirer of Breton. All the hallmarks of the movement can be found in Diego y yo, in which she’d painted on her forehead the face of her husband, Diego Rivera, replete with a third eye himself. “When I look at this painting, the phrase ‘abre los ojos,’ Spanish for ‘open your eyes,’ immediately comes to mind,” says Julian Dawes, co-deputy head of the department for impressionist and modern art at Sotheby’s, in New York. “In the literal sense, it refers to the penetrating stare of Kahlo as the sitter of the portrait and the double portrait of Rivera. But I think it also symbolizes the incredible moment this painting will surely usher in for Kahlo, as the market opens its eyes to Kahlo in a new way and secures her place in the auction echelon [where] she belongs.”
And Surrealism’s moment extends beyond the auction house. We may be most familiar with the cheeky, humorous images of Salvador Dalí’s melting clocks and René Magritte’s floating apples, but the exhibition “Surrealism Beyond Borders,” currently at the Tate Modern in London and previously at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, challenges us to broaden our understanding of the movement. Showcasing artworks from more than 45 countries, this exhibition demonstrates how Surrealism has historically inspired and united artists around the globe. It also calls attention to the movement’s inherently radical political roots. In the exhibition’s catalog, curators Stephanie D’Allesandro and Matthew Gale point out that the original coterie of Surrealists in Paris were intent on exposing global issues such as racism, environmentalism and imbalances of power. Impressive in scope, “Surrealism >

Beyond Borders” features artworks from the Americas, including those of Kahlo and Rivera, Cuban-born Wifredo Lam and British-born, Mexico-based Leonora Carrington, alongside important, rarely seen works by Japanese artist Koga Harue and Afro-Surrealist Martinican poet Aimé Césaire, who co-founded the influential Négritude literary movement. Given Surrealism’s political origins, it’s not surprising that the movement has historically been a democratic art form, frequently breaking down boundaries between high art, “low” art and craft. French fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli frequently collaborated with Surrealist artists, like Dalí and Jean Cocteau; one velvet hat from 1938 was inspired by an image of Dalí wearing on his shoulder the shoe of his wife, Gala. Schiaparelli’s designs continue to hold our attention. In 2021, at the Cannes Film Festival, model Bella Hadid broke the Internet by donning a gold-toned Schiaparelli breastplate comprised of an anatomically correct pair of lungs on the red carpet. At a more accessible price point, footwear brand Birkenstock, in partnership with New York label Opening Ceremony, released last fall a limited-edition capsule collection of clogs featuring some of Magritte’s most iconic imagery. Today’s artists, architects, designers and filmmakers keep reimagining and reinvigorating this revolutionary movement. In Canada, the Surrealist influence has a long and venerable history across creative genres. Avant-garde Winnipeg filmmaker Guy Maddin has cited Luis Buñuel and Man Ray as major influences for his unexpected and uncanny films, like Tales from the Gimli Hospital (1988) and The Saddest Music in the World (2003). In their heyday, in the late ’80s and early ’90s, legendary comedy troupe The Kids in the Hall were, perhaps, accidental torchbearers for the Surrealist cause, largely disregarding comedic conventions and creating many surreal sketches. Meanwhile, from the 1960s until her death in 2005, Montreal-

born Mimi Parent incorporated found materials, including human hair, in her conceptual art pieces, which borrowed heavily from Surrealism. Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun, a Cowichan/Syilx First Nations contemporary artist, marries elements of Northwest Coast formline design with Surrealistic images to explore environmentalism, land ownership and Canada’s treatment of First Nations peoples. The influence of Surrealism is also evident in Canadian architecture. In Toronto, perhaps the most famous example is British architect Will Alsop’s Sharp Centre for Design at OCAD University downtown — a multicoloured, cartoonish box on “stilts,” built in 2000, which dominates the western side of McCaul Street just south of the Art Gallery of Ontario. Although Alsop died in 2018, his off-kilter vision prevails with the recent posthumous completion of the Toronto Transit Commission’s Pioneer Village and Finch West subway stations, both of which feature towering, brilliant-hued,
light-filled entrances that feel more akin to sculpture than function. “[Pioneer Village’s] big cantilevered porte cochère demands that you step back to take it all in,” says Globe and Mail architecture columnist Dave LeBlanc. “It’s like [Alsop is] creating enormous art objects that demand something of you, demand your attention, but don’t invite you to touch them despite the fun colours.” Surrealism is at play on a less dramatic scale in local architecture. LeBlanc references the work of Partisans, the awardwinning architecture studio in Toronto that’s responsible for College Street’s striking Bar Raval, a moody space with undulating ribbons of carved mahogany on the walls and ceilings. “Bar Raval is like a wooden womb and [you] can stroke the surfaces all [you] want…. It’s encouraged!” says LeBlanc. “Partisans is one of most creative firms in Canada. Their stuff is always surprising, always Alice-in-Wonderland-ish, but never forced or heavy-handed. It’s like Surrealism for the masses.”

f all the major milestones left uncelebrated during the coronavirus pandemic, the centenary of the Bauhaus movement is among the most unfortunate. Established in Germany between the world wars, this seminal chapter in modernist architecture has emerged as a blueprint for contemporary design worldwide, from Europe and the Americas to Australia and East Asia and especially the Middle East. Founded in 1919 in the historically rich city of Weimar, by architect Walter Gropius, the Bauhaus movement lasted a mere 13 years until it was crushed by the rising Nazi regime in 1933. But while the Bauhaus was short in duration, its core philosophy of “form follows function” has had a major influence on the century of contemporary design that followed, thanks to the movement’s sheer comprehensiveness. And while folks may view the Bauhaus mostly as a distinctive architectural style, its aesthetic encompasses virtually everything — from furniture and ceramics to visual art and product design, as well as fashion and fashion accessories. Featuring clean lines, geometric shapes, unfussy façades and unpretentious ornamentation, the Bauhaus perfectly encapsulated the futuristic and forwardthinking ethos of the early and mid-20th century. Now, 100 years later, these Bauhaus core tenets are being given new life, as the design world — if not the world in general — looks toward the future and repositions

itself in the wake of a global pandemic. On a grand scale, the European Commission (the European Union’s executive branch) launched the New European Bauhaus (NEB) initiative earlier this year as part of its €750-billion coronavirus recovery plan. Over the coming years, the NEB will pair the original Bauhaus movement’s progressive thinking with decidedly 21st-century (and pandemic-era) values, such as inclusiveness, sustainability and social justice activism. Part think tank, part design lab, part economic accelerator, the NEB — though still in its infancy — will leverage the collective brainpower of architects, scientists, engineers, designers and students to tackle core issues, such as global warming, economic inequality and the digital divide. Already, the endeavour has revealed its debut class of 60 NEB

Bauhaus ingenuity, which is why, perhaps, San Francisco’s prestigious non-profit museum and library, Letterform Archive, opted for “Bauhaus Typography at 100” for its inaugural exhibition (November 2021 – April 27, 2022). The show — Letterform Archive’s first since its pandemic-era reopening — features some 150 pieces from its permanent collection, including seminal graphic design by Bauhaus bigwigs László Moholy-Nagy, Herbert Bayer, Joost Schmidt, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky and Johannes Itten. Focused on the lesser-known impact of the Bauhaus movement on graphic design and typography, the exhibition also demonstrates how that impact is still both relevant and useful in today’s world. Meanwhile, on a different front — one that’s decidedly more in sync with the future — the Bauhaus is advancing to streamingplatform options. Shelter, launched in July 2020, has elevated Bauhaus content with The New Bauhaus documentary, which pays homage to key Bauhaus protagonists, most notably Moholy-Nagy. This revered Hungarian artist and photographer helped establish the original Bauhaus in Europe and propel its renaissance in the United States following his emigration in 1937 to Chicago, where he established, two years later, the School of Design. Moholy-Nagy isn’t the only Bauhaus pioneer to garner cinematic honours recently. Released this past year, Breuer’s Bohemia chronicles the life and lasting impact of Bauhaus trailblazer Marcel Breuer. Moholy-Nagy’s fellow Hungarian expat, Breuer, designed the original Whitney Museum of American Art in 1964, in New York City, as well as seminal modernist homes in Connecticut. “[Breuer’s] bold, large-scale buildings projected the persona of the heroic architect paving the way for the future of global modernism,” says James Crump, who directed the film and authored its accompanying book, Breuer’s Bohemia: The Architect, His Circle, and Midcentury Houses in New England (Monacelli Press: 2021). “The houses that he designed for a small cadre of clients, whom he would also count as friends, arguably define his essence as an architect.” Also noteworthy is the Armstrong Rubber Company’s former headquarters in Connecticut, designed by Breuer in 1967. The iconic Modernist Brutalist, Bauhaus-tinged building is now being reborn as an eco-conscious, net-zero 165-room hotel, called — what else? — Hotel Marcel, operated by the Hilton chain and scheduled to debut in spring 2022.
DE S I G N
On a more quotidian level, Bauhausinspired design and cultural trends continue to permeate both the home and the workplace. In the latter, for instance, software and digital business giant Adobe recently revealed its back-to-Bauhaus endeavour — a series of visually riveting Bauhaus-based designs, fonts and patterns intended to inspire digital creators. Shea Molloy explains the 2021 Bauhaus design trend. “You can see an echo of the Bauhaus ethos in PSAs, political campaigns and murals, [along] with the way designers are employing data visualizations to share and support political messaging,” says Molloy, who leads Adobe Stock’s vectors and illustrations development. Meanwhile, in-real-life (IRL) creators now have access to legacy-defining designs by the often-overlooked female figureheads of the Bauhaus movement, like Gunta Stölzl and Anni Albers, whose works have been transformed into eye-catching textile patterns by the New York–based applied materials manufacturer Designtex. Titled “The Bauhaus Project,” the series highlights eight upholstery textiles and eight digitally printed wall coverings based on key pieces by Albers and Stölzl, who served as head of the Bauhaus weaving workshop in the late 1920s. “As textile designers, the work of the women weavers of the Bauhaus looms large. They were responsible for introducing a new way of thinking about textile pattern and
construction, moving from the decorative figuration of art nouveau to an abstracted vocabulary that celebrated colour and the inherent qualities of the materials themselves. These women have inspired all of us in the studio and we felt that it was time to celebrate their work,” says Designtex president Susan Lyons. “For us, the work of both Anni and Gunta exemplified what was remarkable about the work that came out of the weaving workshop and it was a privilege to spend time with their archives.” And then, there is fashion — perhaps the most ubiquitous and accessible design realm of all. Here, the Bauhaus also continues to make an impact with new products deeply rooted in the movement’s DNA. The German timepieces manufacturer Junghans Uhren, for instance, recently released its new, Bauhaus-inspired Max Bill watch collection — minimalist, sparely designed pieces created by Max Bill, an original Bauhaus-era artist who actually designed for Junghans in the 1960s. The Max Bill watches, available in widely ranging styles, colours and prices, clearly reference key aesthetic tropes that reflect both the Bauhaus and Bill’s unique contribution to the movement. The principle of “form follows function” prevails in their bold, yet simple, design, encapsulating the enduring appeal of a movement whose minimalist, meritorious ethos has remained relevant through time.

ver the past two years, Covid-related restrictions have posed hurdles on land travel between Canada and the United States, ranging from challenging to impossible. Consequently, many travellers view borders as something to get across as quickly as possible. But many of these inbetween places hold a secret: there’s plenty to explore on either side of the divide if you’re willing to slow down and look for it. Saskatchewan on the Montana border is, well, legendary. Centred in the Big Muddy Valley, which was formed, thanks to ancient glacial melting, this area was, during the late-19th and early-20th centuries, the last stop on the “Outlaw Trail,” which started in Mexico and ended in this spectacular Prairie landscape. The terrain made it ideal for hiding out from law enforcement and for stealing cattle, and its proximity to the border made for an attractive destination for law dodgers then, including the infamous Sundance Kid. Today, the Big Muddy offers guided visits to caves where bandits hid and sacred Indigenous sites featuring mysterious stone animal effigies such as Big Beaver Buffalo and Minion Turtle. Drop by Aust’s General Store in Big Beaver hamlet, which purveys everything from work boots to chewing gum to town merch. The Big Muddy is a

ALEXANDRIA BAY, NEW YORK In an area known primarily for cottaging, boating and fishing, Alexandria Bay in the Thousand Islands region in northern New York has a rather glamorous ace up its sleeve. It boasts not one but two bona fide castles within convenient visiting distance. The grand Boldt Castle, originally commissioned by Waldorf Astoria hotel magnate George C. storey castle on Heart Island sat derelict until 1977, when the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority acquired the property and set about restoring and furnishing it in period-correct style. The equally impressive Singer Castle, commissioned by millionaire Frederick Gilbert Bourne of the Singer Sewing Machine Company, was built and furnished between 1904 and the 1960s.
It boasts a boat house and a two-storey ice house, as well as hidden passageways accessible through one of the library’s walnut-panelled walls. Ideal for day visits, both Boldt Castle and Singer Castle offer group tours from May to October. What’s more, they can be accessed by private or chartered boat from both sides of the border. Castle-appropriate formal wear not required. POINT ROBERTS, WASHINGTON Just half an hour’s drive from downtown Vancouver, at the tip of the Tsawwassen Peninsula, the American exclave community of Point Roberts has long been a destination for Canadians in search of cheap gas. This serene, densely forested area, however, offers much more. Lush county parks can be found fringing all four corners of the peninsula, offering bountiful opportunities for birdwatching, whale spotting, boating, camping and hiking. Not bad for a U.S. region accessible only by land via a small crossing at the southern edge of B.C.’s Lower Mainland. And the area’s backstory is as compelling as its green spaces. Stroll the shoreline in
Monument Park, taking a moment to consider the legacy of real-life legend and Delta, B.C., denizen Pansy Mae Stuttard, who operated a local brothel and speakeasy during American Prohibition. “Her buildings were…right up to the boundary line,” notes Mark Swenson, a Point Roberts resident and author of the 2017 book Point Roberts Backstory: Tales, Trails and Trivia from an American Exclave. “She [even] had a pulley system that would carry crates of booze to the beach below, where smugglers would pick them up at night.” STANSTEAD, QUEBEC/ DERBY LINE, VERMONT At the boundary separating Stanstead from Derby Line, you won’t encounter the drab hues, flashing warning signs and multi-lane traffic jams typical of other, more popular Canada-U.S. crossings. Instead, you’ll find here a row of potted plants preventing traffic flow from Derby Line’s Church Street onto Stanstead’s Rue Church — a remarkably sweet and subtle delineation between nations. The borderline is especially blurry at the Haskell Free Library and Opera House, completed in 1904 as a gift to the neighbouring communities by Martha Stewart Haskell and her son, Colonel Horace Stewart Haskell. Inside, theatre patrons seated in Vermont can watch performers on a Quebec stage, while library visitors entering by a door in the U.S. can browse books shelved in Canada or peruse materials in the international reading room. ith six of my long-time friends, I have just dined, at a massive live-edge wooden table, on private chef Tommy Veillette’s duck-confit hash to start the day. We throw on hoodies and head to the helipad in our chalet’s backyard, where Glacier Helicopters’ chartered Bell 206 Jet Ranger swoops in to take us on a heartpounding tour of alpine peaks and lakes. This is what passes for a typical Sunday on a pandemic-smart getaway in
Revelstoke, a mountain gem of a town in southeastern B.C. “It reminds me of Machu Picchu,” one friend remarks, while we’re 5,000 metres aloft. “[It’s] not just the location between mountain ranges, but the cool energy that creates.” The historic small city of Revy has good vibes to spare‚ especially if you have, say, $10,000 a night in ski season (which, this year, runs until mid-April) to do it properly. But the circumstances that brought us here are unusual. In a typical year, our group

spaces for guests to gather or engage in individual pursuits — ideal for a corporate retreat or an incentive perk for office staff. Think: a great room with an immense wood-burning fireplace; media room; a gym replete with a giant steam shower and juice bar; an outdoor climbing wall and a fire pit. And Flying Moose Chalet is happy to accommodate families. According to its owner, who is an avid fan of heli-assisted backcountry skiing, most good heli-ski destinations, where one can go with friends, are not family-friendly.
“The idea that you can send the kids and Grandma to the ski mountain and [then] go heli-skiing for the day is a very unusual combination,” notes Flying Moose Chalet’s owner, who is based in the U.S. “Plus, [there’s the] amazing snow, massive vertical drop — all [these] make Revelstoke a really unique place.” The chalet was built a few years ago, initially as a home for his family, but it became apparent they couldn’t use it year-round. With a few careful tweaks, he converted it into an immaculate premium rental property. “It took some work to do that,” he says, “and to do it well.” And very well done it was, indeed. My group, for starters, was convinced we were the first humans to ever stay in these impeccable digs. Sanitized, sealed powder rooms and remote controls. Scores of cabinets stocked with pristine glassware. Gleaming appliances, including a Miele built-in espresso machine that convinced us we cannot live without it. Ultra-plush robes and slippers. Bathrooms stocked better than a drugstore. Our very own Finnish-style cedar sauna. A cocktail bar that seats six. Behind the scenes at Flying Moose, orchestrating the magic — from booking a private chef and the massage therapists to organizing yoga classes and managing restaurant reservations — is Revelstoke Select. “Heli-skiing really takes it out of you,” says Sally Robertson, who co-owns

They’re not necessarily looking for a resistance swimming pool designed by Michael Phelps, or a huge steam shower, or an eight-person hot tub — all of which Flying Moose Chalet offers. What they’re after is a private place with fewer shared services than at a traditional hotel or resort — in essence, she notes, they want “a safe holiday.” To wit, our group’s personalized guest binder contains not only an itinerary and user-friendly details on the chalet’s services, but also the latest local health bulletins — reminders that nobody is taking travel for granted these days. Meanwhile, though it might be tempting to simply hole up in digs of this calibre, exploring Revelstoke and its roots is a must.
“You’re in an area [with] a very rich history, from the [railway] to the mountains to the Swiss guides who arrived here [in 1899],” says Robertson, who moved to Revy in 2006 to sell mountain real estate in the ski resort’s infancy. “You’re in a small town with an international character that’s very unique.” There are other worthwhile options for exploration, specifically on bustling Mackenzie Avenue. In search of local spirits, my group and I rolled downtown for happy hour at Monashee Spirits, ranked by Forbes in 2019 as “Canada’s best après distillery” — that is, après any winter pursuit in town. Doubling as an alwayspacked local bar, this family-run craft distillery also makes Ethos Gin, named, also in 2019, “Canadian artisan spirit of the year” by Artisan Distillers Canada. “You can’t find my spirits [in] other places,” notes Monashee’s owner, Josh McClafferty. “You have to come here to get the experience.” We sip urban-calibre cocktails and drink in the stories of Hollywood royalty partying with local van-lifers. This small town is attracting big money — both a boon and a concern to
Revy natives, like David Battersby. A principal in the renowned Vancouver firm BattersbyHowat Architects, he grew up here and his father was the mayor for several years. Battersby remembers wild-mushroom foraging and huckleberry picking, riverside beach days and hidden waterfalls. “[This is] a remarkable, natural place,” he says. His studio is currently designing a local residence, one that’s large enough to accommodate a regulation threepoint-line basketball court. “These are serious chalets, built at a very high level,” Battersby points out. “We’re trying to show a sensitivity to the landscape, something that will evolve here over time, showcasing not only the mountain light and the views, but also natural materials, like stone and wood.” A few days later, and with much regret, my friends and I pile into our vehicles to depart. Before leaving, I share a solemn gaze with the giant wooden statue of the Norse god Ullr in the backyard of the chalet. Mountain mythology demands that skiers pray to Ullr for snow. END NOTE
THE ART OF MINUTE Taking miniature to the next, exquisite level, six artists create works that must be viewed up close to be appreciated. By Lisa Mesbur
RO SA DE JO N G
ABI GA I L G O L D M A N
S A L AVAT F I DA I
Inside the small glass globes and test tubes of this Amsterdam artist, plants root downwards, emerald moss spreads, tents are pitched underneath tree canopies, and cottages perch atop craggy cliffs made from bark. The common thread in de Jong’s tiny verdant landscapes is, they cultivate a sense of wonder for the natural world, even as they call attention to its fragility in our hands.
Goldman doesn’t make dioramas. She makes “dieoramas,” perhaps influenced by her day job as a public defender investigator in Washington state. At first glance, her creations depict domestic scenes replete with dollhouse-like figures and objects. Closer inspection reveals more sinister elements — cheerfully enacting macabre scenarios both delightful and disconcerting.
How many angels can dance on the head of a pin? Fidai could probably tell you. This Russian artist carves microsculptures into the black graphite points of sharpened pencils. The effect is bold and surprisingly serious. Shrunk down to mere micromillimetres, his works remind the viewer of the scale of human accomplishment.
J O N A L M E DA
HASAN KALE
E VA N L O R E N Z E N
After making conventionally sized ceramics, Oahu-based Almeda discovered the art of the miniature and started crafting vessels that stand only a few centimetres high. Throwing his diminutive pots on a custombuilt 2-inch-diameter wheel powered by a walkie-talkie motor, he creates vessels that eschew functionality in favour of form. Given their luminous glazes and seductive shapes, you can’t miss Almeda's pots.
Cheekily referring to himself as “Microangelo,” this Istanbul-based painter’s subject matter ranges from meticulously detailed replicas of Old Masters to classical landscapes, flora and fauna. Painted on surfaces, from split almonds to feathers to single popcorn kernels, his tiny masterpieces allude to the ingenuity of human endeavours and the poignant impermanence of art.
Watercolour paints and ink are challenging mediums for any artist, which makes this multidisciplinary creator’s whimsical art all the more impressive. Lorenzen, who lives in Denver, creates postage-stampsized paintings and illustrations of animals, funny faces, fantastical beasts and more, the often humorous subject matter belying the technical skill required to make the artworks.
