WELCOME Envisioning a bold future in harmony with the past.
S
ome believe that the future of our cities, neighbourhoods and homes is contingent on revolutionary change. And yet, urban development and revitalization can just as often involve the re-envisioning and renewal of the past. It is in this way that a community’s history becomes the foundation of the future and lives on harmoniously to become a part it. In this winter issue of Insight: The Art of Living, we invite you to reflect on the value of heritage and history, and how the renewal of all that is “old” may trigger the inception of something new and visionary. Find out how some of the world’s leading architects are preserving the character of iconic landmarks and cityscapes, such as Hearst Tower in Manhattan and the CaixaForum museum and cultural centre in Madrid, even as they transform these beacons of history into environs that reflect innovation. Read too how Montreal, on its 375th anniversary, is reimagining itself through an opulent renovation of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec and the revitalization of Quartier des Spectacles cultural district and Viger Square. As well, with renovation advice from experts at Sotheby’s International Realty Canada, learn about the enhancements that will preserve the character and architectural integrity of your home, while improving its value into the future. A new production of The Abduction from the Seraglio, considered Mozart’s first masterpiece, comes to the Canadian Opera Company’s stage after its premiere to rave reviews last year in Lyons, France. Here, Mozart’s story of the capture of Europeans by a Muslim pasha (a high-ranking military officer) has been placed in the thoughtful hands of celebrated LebaneseCanadian playwright and director Wajdi Mouawad, who has deftly reworked the opera to defy caricatures and uncover the narrative’s humanity. coc.ca
American jazz icon and three-time Grammy winner Branford Marsalis pairs up with internationally renowned Russian conductor Andrey Boreyko to perform Alexander Glazunov’s Saxophone Concerto at Ottawa’s esteemed National Arts Centre. (Glazunov, who wrote the piece in 1934 while in self-imposed exile in Paris, has never seen this work of his performed during his life.) Global traveller and photographer Nikole Herriott shares her must-visit hot spots. By Wing Sze Tang
H
ow exactly did a retired ship welder and a political science student end up making a business out of gorgeous gallery-worthy table art? Simple: they kept it in the family. Lance and Nikole Herriot are the fatherdaughter force behind Herriot Grace, an artisanal kitchenware shop in Toronto. Lance’s one-of-a-kind spoons are mini sculptures, each taking up to 14 hours to hand-carve from salvaged wood. Lance spent years making them purely as a pastime, never imagining anyone would want to buy one. “He loves trees — their lifespan and what they mean for us in so many ways,” explains Nikole, who grew up on a small hobby farm in Victoria, B.C., where her father still lives. Lance would rescue and recycle wood, like the stump of a razed roadside tree, to craft his objets. After training as a pastry chef after high school (her craft shines through in her on-point food styling for the shop’s website), Nikole pivoted to study international relations at the University of Toronto. Her dad then began mailing care packages — lots of spoons, to her. “At some point I said, ‘Dad, they’re beautiful, but could I share them with people?’ He thought they weren’t worth anything, but he said I could if they paid for my student loans,” recalls Nikole. She launched her shop that same year, in 2008. Before long, Herriott Grace (the name is partly a nod to her great-grandma’s favourite song, “Amazing Grace”) had caught the eye of the style mavens at Toronto Life, S/ magazine and other glossies. And Nikole, who took all the photos for the store’s website, was proving her own bornwith-it artistic gift: a brilliant visual sensibility. Today, Nikole is a food photographer alongside fellow shooter Michael Graydon, her partner in life and work. Like the plot line of a rom-com meet-cute, the two clicked when he snapped her for a Herriott Grace feature in Canadian House & Home. Now, the duo travel the world taking pictures for the likes of Bon Appétit, Dwell and Travel + Leisure. The shop certainly has turned out to be serendipitous in more ways than one. Here are the destinations — close to home and far-flung — that make Nikole’s chic list.

Favourites include black-glazed jugs crafted by Patrick Yeung in Toronto: Brit artist Sue Paraskeva’s gasfired porcelain/stoneware tableware; and, of course, the spoons (left), cheese boards and bowls lovingly hand-hewn by Nikole’s father. hile upgrading or redesigning a restaurant in an established hotel is nothing new in the world of luxury resort properties, not all efforts are deemed equal. And most certainly, not all are successful.
Vancouver’s Fairmont Pacific Rim blew the dust off an iconic hotel brand that is known and loved for its historic, often grande dameesque global properties, when it opened its doors back in 2010 with a decidedly modern décor and vibe that made sense in the city’s downtown Coal Harbour neighbourhood. The hotel’s new restaurant Botanist opened in April 2017, replacing Oru, and the impressive transformation is far more than a name change, some new furniture and a coat of paint. Already recognized as one of Canada’s best restaurants, Botanist elevates the concept of Pacific Northwest cuisine by reaching far beyond the food and into the world of design, décor and cocktails. The entire experience is carefully curated by a team who clearly love what they do. Under the direction of Vancouver-based, award-winning design and branding gurus Ste. Marie Design and Glasfurd & Walker, Botanist consists of four unique, memorable spaces — a champagne lounge, a cocktail bar with glassed-in lab, a garden and a dining room — all paying homage to B.C.’s fertile and diverse agricultural region. The already-popular Lobby Lounge, an established go-to for the swish cocktail crowd, is your view from the second-floor Champagne Lounge. Start the evening right by sipping a glass of vintage bubble, accompanied by a nibble of caviar or freshly shucked local oysters, while luxuriating, surrounded by walls of glass and lush plantings of greenery indigenous to British Columbia. Those jonesing for something more spirited can slip into the Cocktail Bar with its dark, sophisticated palette of Italian terrazzo and sexy curved glass. Sample one of the concoctions of award-winning mixologist David Wolowidnyk, Botanist’s head bartender. Adventure seekers can head to the Cocktail Lab and its mad-scientist array of “bar tools” — centrifuge, band saw and roto-vaporizer. Try the dramatic Deep Cove cocktail — a blend of local Island Gin, sea buckthorn and blue algae from the Pacific Ocean, served in an artisan glass moulded onto a driftwood log. >

Prefer a more Zen experience? Kick back in The Garden, a life size terrarium surrounded by about 50 different plant species including green tea camellia, cardamom and ginger. All this living green is surely food for the soul. The grand finale takes place in the Dining Room, with its soothing palette of limestone, whitewashed wood and metal work. Here, the botanical theme is carried throughout from the tactile menus to the polished but still slightly roughhewn dinnerware created by local artists and potters. Eli Canter of New York-based Lady and Butler Collections was tapped to design custom uniforms for the staff to complement each room. It’s the fine attention to detail, such as the 50’s inspired (but done in neoprene) dresses sported by the women and earth-toned shirts with bowties and leather suspenders for the men, that enhance the experience. Adding to the sensory stimulation is the grand piano — custom-designed for Botanist by master craftsman and pianist Paolo Fazioli — providing live neo-soul funk and contemporary jazz Wednesday through Saturday. Botanist being a restaurant, after all, the food shouldn’t be outdone by the music and décor, but thanks to executive chef Hector Laguna, this isn’t an issue. Laguna created a menu based on the bounty of the Pacific Northwest with regionally and sustainably sourced, often organic ingredients, with an emphasis on fresh vegetables. Laguna grew up spending much time in the kitchen of his family’s home in the Mexican state of Hidalgo, north of Mexico City, learning from his mother and grandmother. He honed his craft in food-centric cities, including San Francisco and Miami, with stints at Susur Lee restaurant in Toronto in 2011 and at Vancouver’s highly acclaimed Hawksworth Restaurant as sous-chef before taking the helm at Botanist. His dishes are almost too pretty to eat. Beautifully arranged plates burst with colour, texture, fragrance and taste, with nods to his Mexican roots on occasion, like his mother’s recipe for charred octopus with chorizo

dressing that’s fast becoming a cult fave for repeat visitors. Signature plates include ovenroasted local halibut with spring vegetables and crab emulsion, and herb-crusted lamb rack with green garlic panisse, fava and shallots. “I believe that food inf luences us emotionally,” Laguna notes. “It can comfort, calm, satisfy and bring joy, all in one meal.” Complementing the food is the boutique terroir-driven wine program of wine director Jill Spoor, which supports sustainable, organic and biodynamic farming and winemaking practices. The youthful sommeliers who guide you in pairing wines with your meal are charming and enthusiastic, but don’t let their fresh faces fool you; they’re the real deal. With the team at Botanist, the Fairmont Pacific Rim has found the ideal brand ambassadors who share the hotel’s quality and service ethos. Chef Laguna sums it up succinctly. “It’s about watching someone take their first bite, and [knowing] we’ve made their day even a little bit better.”

A NEW LEASE ON LIFE Expert real-estate brokers share their tips with INSIGHT: The Art of Living on how to add value to an older home. By Tracey Ho Lung
NORTH VANCOUVER
Older homes make up a small fraction when compared to new builds. “North Vancouver isn’t that large a city,” says Paul Boenisch, a real estate broker at Sotheby’s International Realty Canada. “The restored heritage homes are typically done to a high standard and aren’t radically different from each other. Coveted neighbourhoods with heritage homes are located in Grand Boulevard and Upper Lonsdale. Older homes with a smaller footprint can be found in central and lower Lonsdale but are usually set for demolition. “With housing prices so high, many buyers shop at the top of their budget without money left over to renovate,” notes Boenisch. This, he points out, makes remodelled older homes highly desirable. THE RIGHT UPDATES Ensure that the home is structurally and mechanically sound. Check the plumbing, electrical, roof, siding, windows and furnace. “There’s no sense putting in a gorgeous kitchen if the floors are
16
uneven or the plumbing isn’t up-to-date,” notes Boenisch. There should also be a consistent look throughout the home. “Smaller renos sometimes yield mismatched flooring and design styles, and [buyers] may not be willing to pay a premium for improvements if they have to start over,” he adds. Consider also adding a bathroom on every level and a master bedroom ensuite, as well as updating the kitchen and baths. Improve the outdoor space — say, the deck and landscaping. And, of course, everything in the reno should be high-quality. NOTABLE RENOS An Arts and Crafts-style heritage home located on Grand Boulevard sold in 2016 for well over its list price of $2.595 million, Boenisch reports. “It was attractive because the materials and colours complement the original style of the home,” he explains. The house also sits on a 10,000-square-foot lot, which meant it had loads of potential. The owners remodelled the floor plan to reflect what buyers want nowadays — for example,
incorporating ensuite bathrooms, walk-in closets, guest suites, plus luxurious finishes. Originally built in 1927 as a four-bedroom, two-bath home, it has been transformed into a five-bedroom, five-bath house.
MONTREAL
Westmount, Outremont and the Plateau are upscale areas that have homes built from the 1890s to the 1940s. “Some buyers appreciate the historic value and style of these houses but in today’s market, people like ‘turn-key’ homes where the bulk of the work is done,” says Sacha Brosseau, Vice President of Brokerage for Sotheby’s International Realty Canada. For those wanting to get their foot into one of these prestigious neigbhourhoods, they should expect to purchase an older home. THE RIGHT UPDATES You’ll get the most value if you retain the integrity and appeal of an older home. For example, beautiful and original wood floors, mouldings and stained glass. But
T H E CTIRTAV Y E LDI T
you also need to ensure that the property’s “mechanicals” are upgraded to modern standards, such as central air-conditioning or even wiring for a smart-home system. Kitchens and bathrooms should also be updated, but they can’t be over-personalized, Brosseau cautions. “I’ve seen bathrooms practically made of gold, kitchens with flamboyant red counters and cabinets, and bedrooms where closets have been removed.” Making the space too personal could make it difficult to find a buyer when it comes time to sell. NOTABLE RENOS Making updates to a historic home is taken seriously by local authorities. Says Brosseau, “Most municipalities require a home owner to submit detailed architectural plans for [the]city council to approve before work can begin, so renovations won’t devalue the area. This includes permits for landscaping.” Westmount gets top marks for merging a modern aesthetic to older homes while keeping their original charm. Buyers here do high-quality work.
CALGARY
A city younger than Montreal and Vancouver, Calgary has fewer century-old estate homes, but what they lack in numbers, they make up for in the variety of homes. “Much of Calgary was built post-World War II, so there are many modernist and mid-century houses from the ‘20s through the ‘60s designed by prestigious architects,” says Richard Lindseth, lead architect at Calgary-based Richard Lindseth Architecture Inc. His firm has renovated many century homes in the prestigious neighbourhoods of Mount Royal, Elbow Park and Crescent Heights. “While most clients prefer building new, a select group still value the traditional qualities, prime locations and land holdings [that] heritage properties offer, and [they] are prepared to invest in them.”
maintained the charm and original character of 1912, the year they were built. Lindseth favours a home on Sydenham Road that doubled its original size and has an elevator. “It succeeded by making the original and the new portions identical in historic detailing and carefully scaling the structure [so as] not to appear different from the street,” he says.
OAKVILLE
Proud and protective of its century homes, Oakville maintains a designated heritage district known as Olde Oakville, located downtown near the lake, plus a scattering of houses on Coronation Park, Morrison, Bronte and Ford Drive. Comprising a popular walking area, these quaint and charming homes have their fair share of admirers. But according to Alexandra Irish, senior vice-president of sales at Sotheby’s International Realty Canada in Oakville, this popularity doesn’t always translate into eager buyers. “Oakville has seen enormous growth in business and in population, and those who love heritage homes are few, with the majority gravitating towards new builds,” she says. THE RIGHT UPDATES Given its more limited audience, historic homes need to be updated as much as possible, especially mechanics, like central heating and air. “People are already stretched when buying their home,” Irish notes. “An older home can be intimidating, especially if they’re not familiar with the upkeep [required].” Adding modern amenities are
key — say, opening up passageways to create a family-friendly floor plan, building closets and incorporating ensuite bathrooms. But don’t go too far, Irish warns. “The character and originality of these homes are still valued. If you remove too much, like the original hardwood floors, gingerbread trim or leaded glass, you can alienate the buyer who still wants to purchase a heritage home.” NOTABLE RENOS Point O View, a famous lakefront home where writer Plum Johnson lived with her parents and was the inspiration behind her award-winning memoir, They Left Us Everything. “The author said that there was an energy [to the house] that allowed her to be very creative,” says Irish, who helped Johnson with the sale of the home. Point O View’s new owner kept the details that gave the house character and warmth, such as the covered veranda and the transoms, but he also added features that modern buyers were looking for, starting with high ceilings, ensuite bathrooms, walk-in closets, an elevator and a wine room — all attractive amenities for a successful resale.
THIS PAGE: A large deck, a garage and landscaping will all add value when you renovate a home. OPPOSITE PAGE: The successful update of a historical home should strive to retain its best features but also incorporate high-quality modern amenities.
BELOW: Blainville, QC | MLS : 18865538
THE RIGHT UPDATES Lindseth believes that a successful update needs to be genuine — keeping the home’s historic appearance — while introducing all the modern amenities for current times. “An insensitive update or one that’s too trendy tends to diminish or contradict the historical character and value,” he explains. “It’s worth investing to do it properly.” On a practical note, mechanical updates for safety and energy efficiency, plus modern technology all add value to a home, adds Heather Waddell, a sales representative at Sotheby’s International Realty Canada. NOTABLE RENOS Waddell cites two century homes on Prospect Avenue as successul updates. They were renovated from the studs up but still

MONTREAL MAKEOVER What is the best present you could give to one of Canada’s coolest cities for its 375th birthday? The gift of reinvention. By Andrea Janus
M
ontrealers know how to throw a fantastic bash. The Olympics of ‘76 — hosted in what some would call the cultural capital of Canada — has long been regarded as one of the best global events in multi-sport history. Then there is the worldfamous Montreal International Jazz Festival, Canada Pride, Formula 1 Grand Prix and Nuit Blanche (held in winter and the first of its kind in the country) — all of which have framed Quebec’s southern metropolis as one big all-inclusive social club. It’s so appropriate then that for its 375th birthday, Montreal has marked the occasion with an official campaign that had Canadian actor William Shatner apologizing to the neighbours for the noise from a year’s worth of parties (and what a party it’s been!). But perhaps the bigger upside to all the revelry is that Montreal invested in rejuvenating some of the its most important cultural and artistic landmarks. The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) is doing its part, says senior curator Hilliard Goldfarb, by commemorating the occasion with the new Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion for Peace. The focus on the city’s cultural institutions is fitting, he notes, given Montrealers’ true passion for the arts. “Art informs our sense of self-identity,” he says. The new pavilion, which opened last November, is a six-level space that adds nearly 800 works to the gallery’s already-staggering collection of art, including 100 Old Masters paintings that were a gift from the Hornsteins. The perimeters of each level provide spaces for visitors to sit and reflect near windows with views of the St. Lawrence River. Seen from the outside, the façade’s stone slats make the addition appear utilitarian. But as the sun sets, an amber glow emanates from the interior stairway, creating a lovely night light effect. More than $300 million has been earmarked for projects aimed at refreshing cultural landmarks and gathering places in Montreal, which was named a UNESCO City of Design in 2006. Though not a formal designation, the title acknowledges Montreal’s “creative potential” and a commitment from the local

government to foster design within the city. Given the abundance of sculptures, fountains and gardens scattered throughout the neighbourhoods, it’s no wonder that Montreal was added to the list which now includes more than a dozen cities in the world. In keeping with the Montreal ethos, the municipal government put aside more than $100 million to renovate two major public spaces — $75 million for Parc Jean-Drapeau and $28 million for Viger Square. Both are already brimming with an embarrassment of artistic riches that are often overlooked. In Parc
Jean-Drapeau, L’Homme, by Alexander Calder, the 20th century’s most celebrated sculptor, is among 15 artworks that have become part of the scenery. There are the sculptures by Portuguese artist João Charters de Almeida; the art of Mexican-born Sebastián, whose steel and concrete sculptures are found around the world; and Charles-August Lebourg’s Fontaine Wallace, a reproduction of the drinking fountains throughout Paris. These are among many other notable artworks left behind after Expo 67, which also happens to be marking its 50th anniversary. A smartphone app is currently available to guide

users through a two-hour walking tour of the artworks in Parc Jean-Drapeau. The rejuvenation work slated to begin this past spring has been delayed, but once it’s completed, there will be a new promenade linking the sculptures, as well as a 65,000-capacity amphitheatre, which will host major concerts and festivals, says Genevieve Boyer, the park’s communications manager. There’s even talk that the amphitheatre will be the new home of the music and arts festival Osheaga. Meanwhile, the art-focused rejuvenation of Montreal’s first large public space — Viger Square, which fell into disrepair after its first makeover, in the 1980s — is underway. Intended to transform the square into a secluded urban oasis, that rejuvenation effort featured high walls, which made the space uninviting and, to some visitors, unsafe. Not many were enticed to visit Charles Daudelin’s pergolas and Mastodo fountain sculpture, or the magnificent Forces, a sculpture fountain by Claude Théberge. “Forces is an awesome piece of art, but nobody knows that it’s there because nobody wants to go in,” says landscape architect Michel Langevin, whose award-winning design firm, NIPpaysage, is leading the Viger Square revitalization. “We want to reset this perception by giving these pieces of art back to the public.” The square’s makeover, which has been delayed to 2018, includes ditching the walls, retaining most of the pergolas, and restoring the Mastodo fountain, replete with timed lights. Larger trees will be planted around the perimeter to create shade but will still keep the space open and inviting. And in the middle of the square’s four blocks will be a space for small events. “I think there’s this new way of thinking in Montreal of making quality public spaces, including more green spaces downtown to keep people in the city,” says Langevin. It’s the MMFA’s Goldfarb who best sums up the artistic revitalization of the city. Asked whether the rejuvenation projects are a sign that Montreal is reinventing itself with a new cultural identity, he demurs, saying simply, “Culture is the life of Quebeckers and Montrealers.”

Of course, every family has different ideas around what they want to do with their money, and investment decisions need to take those wants and needs into account, adds Richard McIntyre, Dundee Corporation’s executive vice-president. “How one will invest depends on how much they want to distribute to each generation and how many generations they want to support with their wealth.” If parents want their children to receive a modest amount of income — enough to help out, but not enough to make them rely solely on family money — the portfolio might be more weighted to less liquid investments, like real estate or private equity. If they prefer to provide more of an ongoing income, they might buy revenue-generating commercial buildings or invest more heavily in dividend stocks.

ALL IN THE FAMILY Keeping your loved ones wealthy and healthy, requires communication and planning. By Bryan Borzykowski
T
om Deans thinks a lot about how to ensure that his offspring have enough money to allow them to do what they want, which is, if his own family is any indication, to start and sell a business. Over the last three generations, Deans’ family has created and sold several businesses and he himself was president of a family-owned multinational corporation — Symplastics, a manufacturing company — that he sold in 2007. All of this creating and selling of businesses has given the Deans family a significant amount of wealth, profiting more than $100 million from the companies’ sales. For Deans, now a speaker and the author of Every Family’s Business: 12 Common Sense Questions to Protect Your Wealth, preserving that wealth is paramount, but not just for his two kids. He also wants his money to last for their kids and for generations to come. Ensuring that funds last well into the future, though, requires a different approach than if he were only transferring his wealth to his children. He — and an increasing number of other high-net-worth individuals who have
20
amassed a significant amount of money — is taking a more pension plan–like approach to investing and wealth preservation.
DIVERSIFICATION IS KEY
Protect your money by creating a pension plan–style portfolio, best achieved through one way: diversification. The largest endowments, pensions and foundations — all of these must make their money last for decades — own a variety of asset classes, and not just stocks and bonds, says Thane Stenner, a Palo Alto–based high net-worth advisor and author of True Wealth: An Expert Guide for High-Net-Worth Individuals (and Their Advisors). The families that do this the best are the ones invested in real estate, private businesses, infrastructure, venture capital and other assets less correlated to the stock market. These are the same types of assets that endowments invest in. “The more wealth a family has, the more pension-like they can be,” says Stenner. “But they all have a much higher probability of sustaining their wealth if they diversify.”
Pension plan administrators don’t have the same complicated relationships as families do, but just like a board might meet on a regular basis, families must get together to work through their financial and personal issues. In fact, communication is the most important part of multigenerational wealth transfer. “The most important piece of advice is for people to discuss their wishes and intentions with their family members,” notes McIntyre. “Family values should be discussed and everyone should be clear about the purpose of the wealth and how it is to be disbursed among the current and future generations.” Deans agrees that talking about wealth and financial planning, is a must. His extended family meets once a year somewhere neutral where they discuss investments, asset division and work through any other family-related issues. Then they eat. “There’s always dinner and they’re great because everything has already been discussed,” says Deans. Stenner suggests meeting quarterly and recommends using a facilitator to get the conversation going. The goal? To ensure that everyone’s on the same page. “If people aren’t unified in their objectives and can’t agree, then someone will want to leave and pull their capital away from the family,” warns Stenner.
USE A MULTI-FAMILY OFFICE
When it comes to distributing wealth, there are various tools, but most of the details can be left up to a multi-family office that has experience working with high-net-worth families. When it comes to Deans, he is most concerned about what future generations will do. “What keeps high-net-worth folks awake at night is what will this wealth do to my children. Will it release potential or accelerate demise? And it will do one or the other. That’s why talking matters so much.”

n the ideal comingling of old and new architecture, the sum is greater than its parts. Smart adaptive-reuse projects employ the best contemporary design to showcase architectural heritage. They also breathe new life into the past, providing new uses, new contexts and new ways of experiencing the urban landscape. In some cases, adaptive reuse recasts buildings in unimaginably different roles — stables transforming into homes, industrial buildings turning into community hubs. In the best examples — say, the 1989 addition of I.M. Pei’s glass pyramid to the Louvre in Paris, a building whose history goes back to the 12th century — it is the conversation between the old and new that itself becomes iconic. These six exemplary buildings from around the world prove that the past can find new life in designs built for the future. >

The brief: In one of her firm’s last projects before her death in 2016, London-based Zaha Hadid was tasked with creating a modern space that would bring approximately 500 of Antwerp’s Port Authority employees together in a single waterfront headquarters. Hadid was required to preserve the site’s existing century-old fire brigade building, which is a replica of a Hanseatic house, a style popular in Nordic countries in the 1600s. Her solution was to balance a five-storey glass-and-aluminum structure atop the roof of the heritage building. Visible from all directions, with a commanding view of the busy harbour, the extension’s unusual shape, made of 2,000 triangular glass panels, has been compared to a ship, diamond or piece of lumber. The bridge connecting the old wing and new cleverly uses the base for a tower that was planned for the original building but never built. The adjacent square was renamed Zaha Hadidplein, or Zaha Hadid Square, to recognize the architectural achievement.

The brief: Singapore-based WOHA architects have projects dotted all around the firm’s hometown, but none quite so spectacular as the flagship retail location they designed for Space, an Australian-based furniture company. This ultramodern city-state frequently struggles to preserve its past, and the site’s pre-war villa and shophouse were the last of their kind on the street, which is now an arts and entertainment district. The architects lovingly preserved the white-painted façades of the former bakery and former hotel, as well as the Malaystyle timber fretwork in the balustrades, eaves and fascia boards. But inside is a different story. WOHA opened up the space to create grand column-free showrooms, and rear walls were removed to seamlessly connect the buildings to an impressive glass cube structure, contrasting brick against glass, and steel beams against timber. The brief: Originally built as a coal-powered electrical plant, the decidedly functional Mediodía Power Station in Madrid occupied a highly coveted location on the city’s Paseo del Prado art walk. Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, famous for their 1990s transformation of London’s Bankside Power Station into the Tate Modern, were the perfect visionaries for the building’s rebirth as 21st-century sociocultural centre. With the base of the old brick building removed, visitors strolling into a plaza underneath can look up at the building’s underbelly, which resembles folded origami paper. An Antoni Gaudí–style staircase leads to upper galleries in a compact new structure that sits comfortably atop the old power station, echoing the shape of the old building. The orange-hued oxidized cast-iron exterior of the new reminds passersby of the building’s industrial past, while contrasting with its neighbouring building’s green wall, designed by French botanist Patrick Blanc.
The brief: In the 1990s, four identical massive 19th-century cylinders built for storing gas were assigned to four architecture studios to repurpose into a game-changing mixed-use community. From the outside, Gasometer City still conveys industrial-age sturdiness. Inside, the citywithin-a-city houses hundreds of apartments and student dormitories, the Vienna National Archive, a daycare centre, a cinema, an events hall and an array of shops, restaurants and cafés. Each architectural team adopted a different approach and style inside the 15-storey-high structures. (Enough to hold 34 Olympic-size swimming pools of liquid.) Studio Coop Himmelblau added a 22-storey modern glass tower “shield” that lean against their cylinder. Jean Nouvel centred everything on an airy indoor plaza. Manfred Wehdorn built an eco-friendly terraced structure, while Wilhelm Holzbauer created a central block that forms a series of interior courtyards.

H E A R S T T OW E R YEARS BUILT: 1928, 2006 ARCHITECTS: JOSEPH URBAN, FOSTER + PARTNERS The brief: When International Magazine Building in Manhattan first opened in 1928, the six-storey structure was intended as the base of an Art Deco skyscraper. The Great Depression meant a wait of 75 years before construction carried on, this time in the form of Lord Norman Foster’s sweeping 46-storey diagonal grid, rendered in metal and glass. With its sleek angled exterior surface, Foster’s tower seems to float over the more intricate and earthy base, which houses a massive lobby and escalators that glide atop a three-storey waterfall. William Randolph Hearst commissioned the original building as the headquarters for his global publishing empire and it remains as such; magazines such as Elle Décor, Popular Mechanics and Esquire are still produced here. Of course, the advent of digital media means that the building’s floor plate now includes a broadcast studio and the Good Housekeeping test kitchens. But it’s not just the tower’s diamond façade that’s awe-inspiring; it required 20 percent less steel than a conventionally framed structure.

The brief: In transforming an early-20th-century gin distillery into an elegant multipurpose exhibition and performance space, architect Rem Koolhaas conjures up a new Gilded Age — literally. The four-storey structure at the heart of the 10-building campus of Fondazione Prada Milan is painted in 24-carat gold leaf. Despite its shiny surface, the detailing on what’s been dubbed “the haunted house” cleverly matches the utilitarian pre–World War I distillery buildings around it; the building’s both a show-stopper and a team player. An angular ninestorey tower, which will display the foundation’s permanent art collection, stands guard over the campus, its clean modern design making its architectural mark in an otherwise gritty industrial neighbourhood. But not everything about the space, established by the Prada family, reflects the legendary fashion house’s unfussy clean-lined aesthetic. DESIGNING WOMAN Celebrated Canadian designer Dee Dee Eustace went to New York to start over again, and found her renewed passion for career, life and purpose. By Shawna Cohen
A
t any given time, Dee Dee Eustace would have nearly a dozen projects on the go. For this Toronto-born world-renowned architect-slash-interior designer, that could include anything from Friday Harbour — an upscale resort on Lake Simcoe — to a 19th-century brownstone on New York’s Upper East Side. Eustace’s design savvy has landed her multiple appearances on Oprah, as well as a starring role on HGTV’s reality show Real Designing Women. Eustace recently completed the redesign of the lower level of swank Toronto steakhouse Harbour Sixty. “I don’t do cookie-cutter architecture,” says Eustace, whose 25-yearold Toronto-based firm, Taylor Hannah Architect, is on speed-dial for most of the
28
city’s well-heeled style set. “I look to the past while building in future components with new materiality. Picasso couldn’t have painted Cubism had he not been able to paint still life. I’m not afraid to try something new and put it out there.” When it comes to her personal life, Eustace, is just as willing to take risks. In 2013, newly divorced and with her son, Jake, heading off to university, she left Toronto on a whim. “I said to my [then 14-year-old] daughter, Rachael, ‘If, for one year and one year only, you could live anywhere, where would you go?’ She said, ‘New York.’ I flew down the next week,” recalls Eustace. She snagged a charming Upper East Side brownstone for sublet from the prominent art dealer Dominique Lèvy. “A lot
of people don’t just up their lives at 50 and start again,” notes Eustace. “[But] it made me... get passionate again about what I do.” In what she dubs as “a year of magical living,” Eustace kept her Toronto office while tackling projects from her new home base in NYC. Each morning, she’d walk Rachael to the prestigious Hewitt School, revelling in her anonymity. “There’s nothing better than not feeling pressure to wear a certain piece of designer jewellery or drive a certain car,” says Eustace. “You are who you are and you realize that when you travel.” (Next on her list: L.A.) Not surprisingly, it didn’t take long for Eustace to form a new inner circle in New York and immerse herself in design, art and charity. (She is a past president of Out of the
DE S I G N
Cold Foundation which serves the homeless and disadvantaged in Ontario in the winter months.) During her time in the city, her brownstone was featured on the front page of the New York Post, as well as in New York Social Diary, and Eustace herself served as co-chair of the annual preview party for the International Fine Art & Antiques Show — a fundraiser for cancer research. Outgoing and bubbly with boundless energy, Eustace is blond and green-eyed and blessed with a killer fashion sense. “No one takes you seriously when you look a certain way, which makes you have to prove yourself even more,” she notes. “I’ll wear high heels to a site. I’m really feminine, and yet I’m tough.” In high school, Eustace was that girl who was equal parts cheerleader and math whiz (she had a 95 average). Graduating with honours from the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design, she made a name for herself in a highly competitive field where few women are at the helm. “I’m ridiculously positive and I’m good what I do. It comes from hard work and education,” says Eustace. But it’s family that Eustace values most. When her parents visited recently at her cottage in Stoney Lake, Ont., she took her mom golfing and got her dad to drive a boat again, at age 82 — “magic moments,” she says wistfully. She’s close with her siblings too, including brother Michael and sisters Liz and Mary Jo (who hosted the popular TV series What’s for Dinner?). And her ultimate dream is to one day run a full-service property/architecture/design business with her children, now aged 22 and 17. For now, however, Eustace is happy working at her usual frenetic pace and taking on new projects, such as the recent launch of a luxury linen collection called the Princess and the Pea. Though she has been back in Toronto since 2015, Eustace will not soon forget how New
York has changed her: “I’m 54 years old and I have never looked younger. That stress has left me. And I’ve got a different approach to life: You create your own day, you are in control.” Clearly Eustace thrives on change. This fall, she has $13 million worth of real estate on the market with Sotheby’s International Realty Canada: her Yorkville townhouse, Stoney Lake cottage and Friday Harbour unit. Asked why she’s selling, Eustace says she’s always moving forward. “That’s what I do: I love architecture and development — that’s my passion in life, it’s my addiction. Once a project is done, I like to do another one... or three, or four,” she says with a laugh. “I like to be spontaneous. Life should be magical and an adventure.” Despite an up-inthe-air-future, one thing’s for certain: Eustace will create beauty wherever she lands.

REIGN SUPREME
Actress Claire Foy reveals how she’s redefining royalty onscreen. By Elio Iannacci
F
or years, actresses cast to play Queen Elizabeth II have struggled to get it right, and the assumptions that come with this regal role are greater than the crown jewels themselves. At the age of 91, Elizabeth Alexandra Mary — known to most as England’s monarch for 64 years — has amassed more opinions and judgments from the world than any living pop star or leading lady. An easy route to playing the British sovereign is to interpret every situation she’s had with the reserve and bite you’d expect from a Disney villain. In other words, many actresses choose to mirror the same clichés of Liz’s queendom that the press has perpetuated, exemplifying a fierce and impassive portrait of a ruler whose life was turned upside down, at the age of 25, when her father died and left her the throne. Luckily for Netflix — which has spent more than $200 million to make a royal familyfocused series called The Crown — actress Claire Foy has never been one to take the easy road. Aside from its collection of meticulously crafted royal replicas (think china patterns and down-to-the-last-detail furnishings) and its 20,000-plus costume count, the show has been able to do more than make a mark on TV. With Foy at the helm, it has also changed the way the public views the Queen’s narrative. Foy’s skills have brought viewers to a place where they feel deep compassion for one of the most powerful women in history. Interviewed while she was at Lancaster House in London — the opulent mansion next to Buckingham Palace and now a venue for special government and corporate events, as well as the space doubling as the Queen’s HQ in The Crown — Foy describes how her character preparation took nearly a lifetime to perfect. “The thing is, if you’re English, you’ve grown up with the Queen,” says Foy. “You’ve spent so much of your life with her during major events. You’re so aware of her.” Some actors would have taken this knowledge as enough fuel to fire a performance, but the
30
33-year-old Brit felt that more homework was needed. “The public aspect of her life, I felt like I knew quite well, especially how [she] behaves during occasions. What happens behind closed doors – you don’t know about. There are books like Crawfie’s, which I read, among other books,” she says, referring to The Little Princesses: The Story of the Queen’s Childhood, a biography written by the Queen’s nanny, Marion Crawford. “Other than that, there are very few reliable sources.” Unlike any of Foy’s other roles — save for the time she was miscast as the Italian wife of Maziar Bahari in Rosewater, a film about the Iranian-Canadian journalist and human rights activist who ended up a prisoner in Iran (“That [casting] was ridiculous!” she admits) — the character she portrays in The Crown is still very much alive and visible. It would depend on whom you talk to, but the Queen is still seen as one of those people responsible for the United Kingdom’s welfare and safety. “She’s amazing, and my respect for her has grown,” says Foy of her post-Crown connection to the Queen. “The more I do this, the more I realize that the job she’s done is extraordinary. Very few people alive today have been around to witness and be a part of the kind of socio, economic and political change as she has. She’s seen it all. To have such access to the leaders of the world is extraordinary. She’s been in the thick of it without really having an influence. She’s absorbed it all.” What Foy wasn’t expecting was that her own views of the Queen would undergo a complete re-evaluation. “On a human level, the thing I understand as much as I possibly can is that she lost her father when she was so young. With that came huge responsibility and a huge job she wasn’t prepared for or expecting,” Foy says. “She had two young children, and all of a sudden the weight of the world was on her shoulders. She couldn’t really grieve for [her father]. Her life was cut short. I suppose a lot of people would say, ‘You became the queen of England! Hurrah!’
There’s something quite unsettling about that to me. I feel a lot of sympathy for her.” One of the most challenging scenes of Foy’s career is The Crown’s long coronation reenactment, as it gives viewers an intimate look at the responsibilities the Queen assumed at a young age. “Having the composure to walk through the entire abbey of dignitaries and heads of state while you are this young woman being anointed and connected to God? It takes gumption,” Foy points out. The thought of having such a formidable force watching you relive her memories — including the royal family’s relationship with John and Jackie Kennedy — which will be touched upon during season 2 of The Crown — would be daunting for the strongest of thespians. Yet Foy feels differently about the fact that the royals could be watching her every on-screen move. “If you go into it with good intentions and hope that no one thinks you ripped them to shreds, then I think you’ll be ok. I didn’t feel like walking in and doing a queenly impersonation.... It would have just been against what The Crown is about.” she says. “To be honest, [the Queen] will take my performance with a pinch of salt,” she says. “To her, it’s no stranger than having her face on the front page of the newspaper or having someone write something about her in the newspaper. She’s a right cracker!” Next up, Foy will add several films to her extensive film credits, among them, Breathe, which is based on the life of Diana Cavendish, the wife of Robin Cavendish, a British advocate for the disabled and a historic medical-aid developer who developed the first wheelchair with a built-in respirator. In Breathe, Foy felt the pull of obligation once again.... “People who are alive and watching you play them don’t want to see you doing it whimsically,” she says. “They want to see someone doing a realistic portrayal… To me, acting means you have a responsibility to that person,” she says, “and it all has to be truthful.”

IMPERFECT BEAUTY Born of a culture praised for its efficiency and innovativeness, the ancient Japanese concept of wabi-sabi could be the salve for our modern-day overload. By Vivian Morelli

n a society where we’re always wired, always on and always trying to be one step ahead of the Joneses, the philosophy of wabi-sabi interupts, slows us down, nudges us to change direction. Nearly impossible to accurately translate, wabi-sabi is the acceptance of transience and imperfection — the celebration of beauty with all its flaws. Leonard Koren, author of Wabi-Sabi for Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers, after failing to find a translation that breathed life into the concept’s way of living, ventued this description: “Wabi-sabi is the beauty of things imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete, the antithesis of our classical Western notion of beauty as something perfect, enduring, and monumental.” The words wabi and sabi have specific meanings illustrated in kanji (a Japanese writing system that uses Chinese characters) — wabi describes a sense of loneliness and sabi means patina. When combined, the characters form an expression that encapsulates subdued taste, quiet refinement and elegant simplicity. However, wabi-sabi does not solely refer to
visuals and aesthetics. The concept is deeply rooted in Buddhism and its teachings on impermanence, suffering and emptiness. According to Buddhism, wisdom comes from making peace with these marks of existence, as they are intrinsic to our nature, and wabi-sabi can be perceived as a way of practising this mindset of peace and acceptance. One of the best, and most accessible, examples of wabi-sabi is the traditional Japanese tea ceremony — a ritual of purity and simplicity that values bowls that are handmade and irregularly shaped, with an uneven glaze and with cracks, and a tenacious beauty in their deliberate imperfection. In the wabi-sabi philosphy, objects should not only be personal, humble and functional and be paid the utmost attention to detail, but should also be in harmony with nature. Daily-life items such as sake cups and teacups can be imperfect: a patchy glaze, speckled colours, a rustic style. However, this doesn’t mean poor craftsmanship. Wabi-sabi draws attention to the imperfections and the natural process of creating them. >

The ancient Japanese art of kintsugi, a technique of repairing cracked pottery with gold, is another example of wabi-sabi applied to daily life. By filling the crevices with gold lacquer, attention is drawn to the history of the object as something to be celebrated rather than hidden or repaired. It’s about finding beauty in damaged or old things, instead of replacing everything immediately. Kintsugi conveys a philosophy, not of “new,” but of awe, reverence and restoration — the essence of the practice. In Japan, wabi-sabi is also part of the importance given to the seasons. Throughout the year, numerous festivals celebrate fleeting occurrences, such as the ephemeral blooming of sakura (cherry) trees, which only last about 10 days. Crowds gather underneath the trees to eat, drink and enjoy the sight of these delicate, short-lived flowers. The appreciation comes with the awareness of their fragility, knowing the petals will soon be covering the ground after just a gust of wind or a day of rain. At first glance, in fast-paced Tokyo, wabisabi is well hidden. Soaring glass skyscrapers, pristine-clean streets, new structures being constructed on a daily basis, the urban noise and movement — all counter wabi-sabi. But while it may seem the philosophy is slowly fading away in modern Japan, wabi-sabi is experiencing a renewal. Blink and you’ll miss the traditional shrines hidden in narrow alleys in the bustling Shibuya district of Tokyo, the

fragrant and rough tatami floors in homes, the tea ceremony performed in daily life, the appreciation of seasonal foods and Shinto festivals held in every town at any given moment. In Tokyo street style, wabi-sabi can be spotted in the form of vintage pieces, and in high-end Japanese fashion via the deconstructed garments at Comme des Garçons and the modern twist on the traditional kimono at Issey Miyake. The objects that demonstrate the philosophical and aesthetic ideals of wabi-sabi often come with a hefty price tag, but that goes against the humbleness that made them wabi-sabi in the first place. The ideal is not to pursue expensive objects, but instead to strive for something that is closer to minimalism and to curtail consumerism — quality versus quantity at its simplest. Wabi-sabi is perhaps the essence of Japanese culture, which knows how to celebrate imperfection in our imperfect world. Wabi-sabi is everywhere. Just slow down and look around closely. It’s often diluted in its seemingly perfect surroundings.

HOMEWARD BOUND When Kim Newport-Mimran launched her Pink Tartan label, she helped introduce Canadian style to the world stage. Now, 15 years later, she’s just getting started. By Tania Kwong
K
im Newport-Mimran is on fast-forward. She’s prepping photo shoots for the fall collection of her Pink Tartan brand, orchestrating a big studio move and nabbing the finale-show spot at Toronto Fashion Week, a mere week-and-a-half away. But when we chat, the voice on the other end of the line is upbeat, calm even. “I just wanted to change the space up,” she says of her recent move, speaking with the confidence of a woman who knows what she wants. Besides the practical reasons (the convenience of an elevator), there’s the drive to improve e-commerce (by shooting her own digital campaigns) and the desire for a fresh perspective — all of these paved the way toward a new location. “We needed to have quicker access to our product,” she explains. “Before, we used to go through third-party warehousing.” The bright and big open-concept space of the new studio is a minimalist’s dream. There are no doors, the walls are stark white and the ceilings sky-high, and the beautiful display racks are filled with tidily arranged product. Says NewportMimran, “There’s no place for anything to hide anymore. It’s just a nice, fresh change.” Trading spaces isn’t the only big change
Pink Tartan has up its chic sleeves. The fashion brand, which is known for its sleek, sophisticated designs, is in the throes of arguably one of its biggest business transitions since branching out into retail concept stores in 2010, and that is bringing the manufacturing of most of her products home to Canada. After an intense buying trip that had her racking up miles all over the globe, NewportMimran felt the urge to take a step back and turn her focus towards Canada. Dubbed #CanadianChic online as well as in brickand-mortar stores, Pink Tartan is engaging its customers in a “true north” shopping experience and connection — via products made and designed by Canadians, alongside the stories behind them. “Bringing the manufacturing closer to home allows me to have a closer eye on the product as it’s getting developed,” Newport-Mimran points out. Much like the transparency that people now require in terms of the origin of the food they eat, she believes they also want to know where their clothes are coming from and that they’re sustainable — instead of simply being ultimately driven by price. At the moment, recycled denim is on her
radar. Citing environmental concerns associated with manufacturing, Newport-Mimran tapped local embroiderers, beaders and artists to create recycled-denim one-of-a kind pieces that are similar to works of art. “We are ethical and we make beautiful clothes that are investment pieces. Every piece has a story that we try to pass on, so customers have a relationship with the brand and with what they’re wearing.” It’s precisely this mindset — connecting consumers with an experience and lifestyle — that helped launch Pink Tartan’s first flagship shop, in 2010 — Seventy Seven in the upscale Yorkville neighbourhood in midtown Toronto. In addition to wares from the brand, clientele are encouraged to shop a mix of home and gift items and off-label with vintage. It’s the same recipe that is currently making Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop pop-ups a success. “I like it when there’s a story and integral reason why the products are chosen to be in the store,” says Newport-Mimram. “It always relates to the style message I’m putting out every season.” In keeping with the brand’s classic DNA, Newport-Mimram revisited the almighty shirt — wearable but cool — and teamed up with some of her most trusted Canadian >

fashion stylists to rework her favourite classics for her fall collection. There’s a trench-coat collaboration with George Antonopoulos, a perfect parka co-creation with Susie Sheffman and a smart editor’s pant co-designed with Zeina Esmail. “I wanted to bring the stylist in at the beginning of the design process versus them editing at the end because they have such a good eye,” she explains. There’s no denying the monumental shift from print to digital in the fashion space; yet, for this designer, relying on her instincts matters most, whether it’s curating the products for her website, switching to shooting digitally focused campaigns or giving customers the instant gratification she knows they crave. Take Pink Tartan’s involvement with the newly rebranded Toronto Fashion Week in September this year. While other designers are giving glimpses into their spring offerings, Newport-Mimran decided against it. “I don’t like the gap,” she says. “By the time spring clothes make it to retail, you’ve forgotten about them. It’s more about letting me show you immediately what I have.” Luckily for Pink Tartan, it has a reputation for a distinct aesthetic, which is why it has attracted fans beyond the fashion set. “It’s always flattering when people love your aesthetic enough to hire you to bring something from their brand to life,” says NewportMimran, now referring to her corporate gigs designing uniforms for hip hotels like the 60 Thompson in New York, trendy restaurants like Toronto’s La Palma and her muchtalked-about work for Porter Airlines, which, she acknowledges, helped differentiate the marketplace. “It’s really great because your work lives on.”
But although quick to credit her career success from learning things the hard way, Newport-Mimran says her role model is her husband and partner of 16 years, Joe Mimran, of Club Monaco and Joe Fresh fame. “He’s brilliant at everything he does and makes it look so easy, and I know it’s not.” And it’s no surprise that the design-focused duo are avid art collectors and that their meticulously curated homes in Toronto, New York and Palm Beach are frequently featured in home décor magazines. “The nice thing about art is how it’s all threaded together like fashion,” says NewportMimran. “Love of fabrics and [love of] texture are the same, [and] whether it’s for a dress or a couch or chair, colour can really speak to you.” In her particular case, Newport-Mimram favours sculptures. She then notes the Thomas Houseago mask positioned on a plinth, and the Nara painting hanging on a wall in the couple’s room — a constant reminder of their daughter, Jacqueline, now 16. Last year, Kim Newport-Mimran received the Women of Influence distinction. Though flattered to be recognized this way, she maintains that at the end of the day she’s just a rough-and-tumble working girl. “I’m schlepping — carrying things — all the time. I’ve got a French bulldog. I’ve got a kid. I’m pinning mannequins, doing fittings. But I still want to look good.” And that, in essence, is why Pink Tartan appeals to the everywoman. “I have a POV [point of view] that shows through in the clothes I design. You just have to go out and roll up your sleeves and bring something to market that people like.”

URBAN RENEWAL Wunderkind Yasin Osman reveals that even a broken-down building can be a source for inspiration, and discovery. By Yuki Hayashi
A
s a housing project came down, a photographer was born. Yasin Osman grew up in Regent Park, one of the most notorious social housing projects in Toronto for its problems with crime and gang violence. In 2006 the city kicked off an ambitious revitalization plan spanning 15 to 20 years aimed at transforming the troubled neighbourhood into a dynamic mixed-income, mixed-use district with condos, townhouses, parks, commercial spaces and community buildings. “When the revitalization began, the apartment building in front of mine was getting smaller because of the demolition,” recalls Osman. “I decided to take my mom’s cellphone and document the changes that were going on.” Though his mother encouraged his creative endeavour, Osman, then 13, suspected it would be the opposite of cool among his sportsloving peers. “I kept photography a secret from my friends… I was scared they wouldn’t like it. I didn’t want their opinion to have an effect on how I felt. It was too important,” says Osman, now age 25 years old and an up-and-coming documentary photographer to watch (his current clientele includes UNICEF Canada, Adidas, Indigo, VICE News and streetwear line OVO).
44
While Osman is an adept landscape photographer, his early career has been distinguished by his candid portraits. His best work captures intimate moments of trust between photographer and subject. Muslim pilgrims making Hajj in Mecca; Somali youth goofing around on a beach; tired shopkeepers in New York City... Osman encapsulates his subjects far beyond the staged, “you just found me in an Instagramable moment” aesthetic that’s so ubiquitous nowadays. Often, the person in the photo appears to be as curious about the person behind the lens as the photographer is about his subject. These moments of engagement fit right into Osman’s larger agenda. “Photography is a vehicle for social change because it allows us to see the lives of different people and cultures,” he says. “It allows us to connect and sympathize with our brothers and sisters across the globe, meet people from places we’ve never been and see far away landscapes.” In an age of mistrust, getting to know someone is a political act. For Osman, it’s also personal. “I wanted to help change the narrative of my home country. I witnessed my mom shaking her head anytime Somalia was mentioned on the news, either because of pirates, war lords or the famine. Somalis are one of the most beautiful and generous people I’ve ever come across and I
wanted that to translate into the photos.” Osman’s heroes include crusading photojournalists Steve McCurry, Kevin Carter and Nick Ut, whom, he says “totally changed the way we think about our world through providing images that capture and communicate an emotion to the viewer.” In 2015, he shot a controversial VICE photo essay on Limerick, Ireland — also known as Stab City, due to its high violent crime rate. Although his goal was to introduce the real people who lived there — stereotyped as potential criminals, much like Toronto’s Regent Park youth are — some readers felt it was sensationalist. However, the story put the 22-year-old on the map, literally. In the following years, Osman has taken a whirlwind journey, shooting in Mecca, Saudi Arabia; Ethiopia (a documentary campaign for Pious Projects); and Somalia (shooting the American Refugee Committee’s #LoveArmyForSomalia campaign). It was in Mecca, where his mother, a devout Muslim, made pilgrimage, that Osman had an epiphany: “We all see the world differently, and the only way I can show you how I truly see something is not [by] explaining it to you, but [by] showing you a photo of it,” he says. More self-discovery followed, as Osman honed his focus on humanitarian photography. Documenting the work of aid organization >

Pious Projects, Osman went to Africa for the first time. “When I was in Ethiopia, my whole perspective changed. I feel like we’ve been brainwashed to think that these communities in Africa are depressed and sad when in actuality everyone I met was not only happy and thankful, but were willing to share with me the little that they had,” he says. Osman doesn’t deny the reality of poverty, but says it shouldn’t define a culture. He sought to share positive images of countries like Ethiopia and Somalia, even while getting a “reality check” in the material differences between the first and third worlds. “Before going to the motherland, I never thought about my privilege. I never thought about the value of a dollar. I never thought about donating to anyone or anything. It completely changed me and has made me realize that life is about helping one another,” he says. While Osman’s documentary work is about sharing stories, he felt that there were still stories to share closer to home. And just like that, #Shootforpeace was launched. “When I was younger, sports kept a lot of the youth from going down the wrong path. But, if you didn’t like sports, you didn’t have many options. The kids in my community carry so much on their backs. I wanted them to have an opportunity to express themselves,” says Osman. What to call the program involved animated discussions between Osman and the kids, who’d complained that its initial name,
Photo Club, was boring. They eventually decided on “Shoot for Peace,” a play on words relevant to their common goal — combating gun violence — and exactly what the group wanted to achieve through the art of photography. Almost every Sunday, Osman takes a group of Regent Park youths on photo expeditions across Toronto to teach them about photoediting techniques and software. For the first year, the students shared smartphones and point-and-shoots, but after Osman secured a sponsorship from Canon, each student received their own digital SLR camera. The results have astounded even Osman. “I thought the kids would want to take photos of basketball and architecture, things they’d already expressed interest in. After a while, I found [them] taking photos of very intimate things, like their mother cooking or their dad hugging their sibling.” Through #Shootforpeace, Regent Park youth are changing the narrative of their community, one image at a time. It’s a logical extension of Osman’s photographic mission Storytellling is at its heart. As his client Samantha Taylor, Senior VP of marketing at Indigo, notes, “Yasin is a master storyteller. He creates instant connections with people that shines through in his work.” Though early in his career, Osman’s legacy is already takeing root as new storytellers pick up their SLRs, ready to add their voices to the dialogue.

ALL THE RIGHT MOVES From football to furniture design, Terry Crews aims to become a permanent fixture in your living room. By Jeremy Freed
48
he NFL player–turned sitcom star Terry Crews approached his first outing as a furniture designer the same way he approaches everything he does — full-on. Never mind that he’d never created a stick of furniture in the past. It was something he’d always wanted to do and, now given the chance, he was running for the end zone. “I don't mind throwing myself out there, and if people don't like it, it's ok,” says Crews. “I just have to give it my best.” From the gridiron of professional football to prime time TV to his latest gig designing The Terry Crews Collection for Bernhardt Design, few people have been as successful in one career as Terry Crews has in two — with a third now underway. At 49 years old, the former NFL defensive end and current star of FOX’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine attributes his success to his adeptness at embracing change. “If you think you're going to do the same thing for your whole life, you've got another thing coming — the world is changing so fast,” he says over the phone from Los Angeles, where he lives with his wife and five kids. “You have to find a way to reinvent all the time.” While mostly known for his acting roles and stints with the Los Angeles Rams and Philadelphia Eagles, Crews started with decidedly more artistic ambitions. A childhood obsession with comic-book art led to a scholarship to study graphic design, and a job as a courtroom sketch artist in his hometown of Flint, Michigan. “I'm probably the biggest nerd in the world,” admits Crews, whose other passions include fonts, PC gaming, Star Wars and Saul Bass–era movie posters. “Two hundred and forty pounds of nerd, that's me,” he says with a laugh. While his art career took a backseat to football, he never stopped creating, even as a pro athlete. Crews gained a reputation as a capable portrait artist, painting likenesses of fellow NFL players for extra cash when he was between teams and taking drawing classes in his spare time. Crews’s third act as an industrial designer came about as the result of an encounter between the former athlete and Bernhardt’s president, Jerry Helling at the Salone del Mobile, the world’s foremost luxury interior design show, in Milan. Helling was looking for designers with unconventional credentials, and Terry Crews, an enthusiastic amateur who idolized mid-century legends like Eames and Corbusier, fit the bill perfectly. “He wanted someone who was outside of that world,
DE S I G N
someone who could give a fresh approach,” says Crews, recalling his excitement at the opportunity to fulfill a lifelong dream. “And that’s what I had.” With characteristic boldness, Crews set out to create something both fresh and timeless, a collection that could stand alongside the works of the 20th century’s greatest designers. “When it comes to furniture, everything seems to be European,” he says of his ideation process. “I decided to come at it from a different viewpoint.” The result is a collection inspired by ancient Egyptian motifs and informed by the clean lines and simple shapes of Eames and Saarinen. The Ibis sofa takes its name — and the swooping form of its back — from the outstretched wings of the ibis bird, an Egyptian sacred symbol. The Float tables and Aire bench are inspired by pebbles along the banks of the Nile, their round edges smoothed by the river’s current. The Lilypad lounge chair, the star piece in The Terry Crews Collection, is a round-backed chair perched on an ovoid wooden table and looks very much like a flower growing
from a lilypad. The design sprang from images Crews found of the hawk-faced Egyptian god Horus sitting on a water lily. “I thought, Oh my God, that's what furniture is all about!” he says of his moment of inspiration. “When you sit down on the Lilypad chair, you're basically like an Egyptian sky god. It kind of hit on all cylinders.” Crews is already hard at work on his next collection for Bernhardt, due for release at New York’s International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in 2018. He’s also got ambitions to expand into architecture, creating spaces within which his imaginative furniture can live. Another reinvention complete, Crews admits that the thing he loves most about his latest career is the same thing that got him started drawing and sketching as a kid — the idea that design, whether a comic book or a movie poster or a chair, can speak volumes. “When you see the Star Wars logo, you get the story right along with it,” he says, recalling a favourite metaphor. “I always see design as having a big narrative. That's the thing that turns me on... It's really about the story behind it.”

ancouver’s Joseph Segal is a self-made billionaire, thanks to the various business ventures that he invested in — from selling fish from his bicycle to property development through his company, Kingswood Capital Corporation. But when it comes to one of his greatest passions — collecting art, Segal values the help he’s had along the way. “The first object I bought was in Los Angeles about 40 years ago,” says Segal. “I was walking down Rodeo Drive and stopped in a shop owned by an Englishman by the name of David Orgell. I saw an array of Sheffield silver-plate [items] and [they] looked magnificent.” Segal purchased the Sheffield pieces and ended up becoming friends with Orgell.
“Three years later, he called and said, ‘You should start to collect real things. Let me teach you,’” Segal recalls. Now, Segal is the tutor, sharing his experiences in building one of the most impressive private art collections in Canada. And here’s the first piece of advice from this well-known philanthropist — buy something you love. “I don’t buy for investment,” says Segal. “I buy it because I take pleasure in it.” This sentiment is seconded by Elizabeth Pergam, an instructor at Sotheby’s Institute of Art in New York. “For collectors, it’s important to love, and want to live with, the art. So, listen to your instincts,” says Pergam. For intermediate collectors, the next step is examining why are you drawn to certain types >

of art — for example, a landscape versus a portrait. A fine arts education can help you break down certain art styles, so you can start focusing on your collection. Amassing an art collection is a long-haul game. You have to put in hours of practice and study before you can get really good at it. But you don’t need to go back to school to get a fine arts education, notes Pergam. If there are specific artworks that catch your fancy, try to see them in person and compare them to similar pieces in galleries and museums. Previews at auction houses like Sotheby’s provide a great opportunity to examine artwork up close. Making friends with fellow collectors is another way educate yourself about art and its nuances. Seasoned collectors share their pitfalls and triumphs in the world of art collecting, and can help connect you with artworks that may interest you. Segal tells the story of how he found one of his favourite art pieces. “Twentyfive years ago a dealer in Winnipeg called me. [He said], ‘Somebody said I should call you because you are interested in good things. I have a painting you might [like]. It’s a Renoir.’” Visit galleries and auctions, as they are the perfect venues for networking. They bring together all the players. “The only way to learn is to listen to someone with more knowledge and experience,” notes Segal. “I didn’t know anything about art before. Now I see the beauty of the artwork plus I’ve learned to appreciate the creativity that went into making it.” There are however, potential drawbacks to getting in too deep with the collector community, such as competition with other collectors. There is an endorphin rush when it comes to purchasing an artwork to impress or compete with other aficionados. So, it’s important to take a step back and stick to that first principal — buy what you love — before you sign off on a piece of art. But this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t take the monetary value of an artwork into

consideration at all. Building and focusing a fine collection also rely on the ability to trade up, say sell two or three smaller works to finance the purchase of one to-die-for piece. This practice also helps you keep your collection from becoming cluttered. “It’s not a question of size but [of] quality,” Segal explains. To wit, Segal is a businessman. He says that when he adds to his collection, he assumes that a piece will appreciate in value. But the real treasures are those pieces he can appreciate in real life. In the upper echelons of art collecting, for example, there are consortiums who purchase art as an investment only, locking it up in vaults until the time is right to resell. When he collected silver, he used the pieces. Today, Segal’s collection is proudly displayed within his Belmont Estate in Vancouver. The estate, listed with Sotheby’s International Realty Canada at $63 million, sets a record for
real estate in Greater Vancouver’s history. Another invaluable piece of wisdom from this seasoned collector: Buy the best you can afford. When Segal started getting serious about buying art, he was mindful of budget. Studying art helped him train his eye. “Just because its old, doesn’t make it automatically valuable,” he warns. Mary Bartow, senior vice-president and department head of prints at Sotheby’s in New York offers this advice: “As you collect, it’s important to note that market trends are cyclical, so opportunities may arise to purchase something during a lull in popularity.” If you are working with a smaller budget, consider graphic art and multiples (artist-commissioned series of identical art pieces) by well-known artists. “Printed images by very well-known artists can be purchased for a fraction of a painting or drawing by these artists.” Knowing when to stop is another important skill to learn. We asked Segal what his next purchase would be and his response? “Nothing.” “I love what I have,” says Segal. “And I have no room for anything else.” He sees his role as a steward, rather than an owner, and he is someone who sees creativity as much a treasure as a material object. “You can’t just put it in a closet.”

DISCOVERING DOURO Portugal’s “valley of gold” offers the discerning traveller a special place that stirs all the seven senses. By Andrea Janus

P
ortugal has been breaking tourism records several years running — up nearly 13 percent in 2016 over the year before, according to the Instituto Nacional Estatística in Lisbon. There are many reasons why the country is a magnet for visitors — a diverse culture, a reputation as a safe travel destination and rich historical legacy, all of which appeal to a variety of tourists. But it’s the discerning travellers, seeking a unique adventure away from the urban bustle of Lisbon and the crowded sunny beaches of the Algarve who can really make the most of their trip — if they venture off the beaten path and into the Douro Valley. Designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO nearly two decades ago, the Douro Valley (douro translates as “gold”) is the renowned wine region in the north. Portugal is the 10th-largest wine producer in the world, and nearly 25 percent of its output comes from the Douro Valley in the form of port and DOC wines (the country’s top wine region classification). The Douro region, also
known as the Alto (“high”) Douro, is considered the world’s oldest demarcated wine region, with evidence of wine production dating back some 2,000 years. The region is located along the bend of the Douro River, which runs from northern Spain in the east to Porto — formerly the capital of Portuguese and birthplace of port — in the west. Start your journey in Porto and venture to the Douro region by riverboat cruise, helicopter or car or perhaps a combination of all three. Lodgings range from small family-run winery hotels to rustic hillside resorts, but the gem of the region is the Six Senses Douro Valley (a 90-minute drive from Porto) — a luxury hotel and spa that opened its doors in 2015 under the Six Senses resort chain. Six Senses (voted the world’s best hotel brand in 2017 by Travel + Leisure readers) bought and renovated the 19th-century property to fit in the company’s eco-conscious ethos. The resort itself received Conde Nast Traveler magazine’s Readers’ Choice Award as one of the top 25 European resorts in 2016. >

TAP Air Portugal offers five direct flights weekly from Toronto to Lisbon. Portugal’s flagship airline has a new fleet of A330 planes featuring fully flat beds in business class and meals crafted from Michelin-starred chefs.
The 22-acre river-front property welcomes visitors into a modern-day oasis immersed in an old-world model of sustainability. Nick Yarnell, the resort’s general manager, points out that the local quintas (“vineyards”) have been in the region for generations, and because of the remote location, they have managed to be largely self-sufficient in everything from food to fuel. Following in this tradition, the dining room’s vegetables and herbs are harvested from the resort’s organic garden, which is fertilized by compost on-site. The resort’s commitment to sustainability is also evident in the décor: Rooms feature a neutral palette that evokes the resort’s natural setting. Certified wood, along with recycled, renewable local materials, prevail throughout — such as cork ceilings and bathroom countertops made of Portuguese limestone. Guests can avail of the resort’s sumptious full-service spa and plenty of outdoor activities, from tree climbing to mountain biking, but the real draw is in the lush landscape and opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich local history of port and winemaking (and tastings) at numerous quintas nearby. A cobblestone drive away is Niepoort’s Quinta de Napoles, famous for its wine, port and environmentally sensitive building that blends into its setting. Even closer is the Quinta da Pacheca, which now offers visitors a five-star stay in what was once the founding family’s home. In September, guests can get right into the winemaking experience by helping pick and stomp the grapes. At Quinta do Bomfim, serious oenophiles can visit the birthplace of two renowned ports, including the 2007 Dow’s, the only vintage port in the 21st century to garner a perfect score of 100 points in the Wine Spectator magazine. Over at Quinta do Crasto, guests will want to take a dip in the glorious infinity pool, which overlooks the vineyard and river, and was designed by Pritzker prize – winning architect Eduardo Souto de Moura. If a day of wine tastings has tired you out, you can opt to stay close to home and enjoy a tasting and lecture in the wine library, courtesy of the resort’s very own enthusiastic sommelier, João Ferreira. At the day’s end, you can then drift off to sleep, content in knowledge that all your senses were stimulated in a very special place.

DECADENCE DOWN UNDER Hamilton Island resort in the Great Barrier Reef delivers opulent amenities amid spectacular vistas. By Doug Wallace

The jaw-dropping landscape of Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island.
T
he first thing you notice after hopping off your flight onto Hamilton Island are the immaculate golf carts — dozens of them waiting to whisk you to your villa. The second thing is the cockatoos winging their way onto your balcony railing to welcome you to your new favourite place in the world. The hub of the Whitsunday Islands archipelago, Hamilton Island — located off the coast of Queensland — is a luxury retreat rife with posh pampering, exclusive boating, fine dining and full-on Great Barrier Reef adventures. The island is run like one big happy town, the marina its high street, ringed with the basics in amenities — post office, general store, pharmacy, liquor mart, novelty shops and galleries, and numerous specialty restaurants. Luxury condos, big and small, are self-catering, offering all the comforts of home. >

You preorder supplies in advance from a grocer in the mainland port of Airlie, which are then picked up after check-in. A fishmonger at the marina delivers the freshest seafood right to your doorstep. A golf cart is your mode of conveyance for the week to shuttle you to and from the marina and yacht club, the pools and beaches on the island, and the bounty of other attractions and distractions. There’s even a small zoo, where you can commune face-to-face with kangaroos, koalas and wallabies. Although a major cyclone earlier this year caused damage to Hamilton and the surrounding islands, as well as to the mainland, renovations and repairs were swift. With the exception of Hayman Island resort and Daydream Island, both of which are still undergoing renovations until mid-2018, the region and the tourists have safely weathered the storm, most of them barely missing a beat.
DAY T R I P P I N G
Hopping on and off boats is the order of the day here. Guests can take in a wide cross-section of marine activities, ranging from a romantic tall-ship cruise to a sporty yacht adventure. You can even explore the region by raft or jet ski, or sail around all 74 Whitsunday Islands if you like, skippering yourself or chartering a crew. There’s also the option to soar over Heart Reef ’s stunning coral composition via seaplane or helicopter and then picnic on a private beach. Or trek the Ngaro Sea Trail and stop in at the historic aboriginal caves at Nara Inlet. The choices are plentiful and the vibe is easy breezy.

10 lists of beach destinations. The sand itself — purportedly 98-percent-pure silica — is comprised of granules so fine that it feels like you’re walking on cornstarch. Meanwhile, back on Hamilton Island, if you can’t justify spending all of your time swinging in a hammock, take a hike. The views are superb, especially on the Passage Peak trek, which offers 20 kilometres of nature trails plus a guided audio tour via app.
MUST DO
A visit to the Great Barrier Reef is a no-brainer. Cruise Whitsundays will take you to Reefworld, the tour company’s now-refurbished pontoon platform stationed at Hardy Reef, where you can snorkel or scuba dive amid 400 types of coral and enjoy glimpses of up to 1,500 species of fish. Go for the Reefsleep option and spend the night on the pontoon’s top deck, where you’ll be
sleeping on a comfy swag — a low tent equipped with snug bedding — underneath the stars. Viewing the Great Barrier Reef up close is a breathtaking and humbling experience. You feel privileged to be here, with so much to see per square metre — white, red and green feather stars lighting up the ocean floor; bumphead parrotfish do everything but bump heads, and giant schools of yellowtail fusilier swimming by you in a glorious cascade of colour. You may even spot turtles and stingrays gliding past your shoulders. The giant clams, which you’ll see plenty of, are a good sign of a healthy reef. Out here, marine life gets to grow big because they’re well protected.
GE T T I N G T H E RE
Although you can fly to the resort town of Airlie Beach on the mainland and take a ferry, the best route to Hamilton Island is to fly direct via Qantas Airways or Virgin Australia. The best time to go Down Under is October through May (keep in mind that December and January can get busy), while June to September are great months for sailing and whale-watching. CULINARY HINTERLAND Travel to where food is fiercely protected and enjoyed with wild abandon — Quebec. By Chris Taylor
N
othing is more certain than a brutal winter in Quebec. But the cold — even at its extreme — does not stop Quebec City’s young culinary guard from filling their menus with the freshest ingredients possible. These are chefs who forage for vegetables, hunt for precious fungi and swoon over the best of artisanal meats and cheeses imaginable. They know their terroir and appreciate the uniqueness of their province’s rich culinary heritage and independent purveyors. Of course, going seasonal in a season hardly known for its bounty certainly has its challenges. And that’s where foresight — and
62
strong doses of imagination and ingenuity — makes all the difference. Take Frédéric Laplante, whose Quebec City eatery Légende par la Tanière has emerged at the forefront of Quebec’s hyper-local/hyperseasonal vanguard. Set in the Old City, close to the antiques district, Légende is known for its use of sous-vide (precision-driven vacuumpacked cooking), which turbocharges flavour, enhancing the culinary experience. In the summer, sous vide helps propel ultrafresh food to even greater flavour heights. But, it’s in winter, Laplante notes, that this cooking method can really come in handy. “During
cold months, we switch to a menu that’s more hearty and comfort-food styled — the food of our ancestors.” he says. For Laplante, this means mushrooms, squashes and root vegetables like carrots, beets and celery root — all sourced from tiny farms and hothouses near Quebec City or Montreal and specializing in winter produce. Laplante pairs these vegetables with regional fish, beef or deer, which he prepares via sous-vide to extract every bit of taste. He then accents the proteins with herbs and berries harvested in warmer months and then preserved for winter. “Items come in fresh and beautiful, and then the marinade brings
T R AV E L
out other flavours,” he says. Laplante has also recently been exploring unusual protein sources, like crickets, which he grinds into a powder as a filling for ravioli. “[Here], we remain true to the region, so there is no chocolate or lemon, but lots of maple syrup.” Close by is chef Mathieu Brisson’s bistro-style restaurant, Le Clocher Penché, considered one of the most romantic in town, particularly for brunch. Like Laplante, Brisson maintains an almost cult-like adherence to locally sourced ingredients, especially in winter. “We even have one purveyor who grows beets, squash and potatoes in specially designed dark rooms right in his home.” Brisson concedes that ultra-green dishes, like simple salads, can be tough to prepare in the cold season (“I may even import some organic varieties from the U.S.,” he admits). But the biggest change at Le Clocher Penché in winter is the sheer number of dishes on offer. “In the summer we might change the menu every other week and alter dishes each day, depending on what’s available,” he says. “But in winter we don’t switch things up as much.” This means more reliance on hearty staples such as fruit jams and fragrant garlic preserves, as well as plenty of tasty cheeses, which have become a distinctly Québécois staple, too. “It’s all kept in a cool room,” Brisson explains, “along with lots of veggies that we harvest in the summer.” And then there’s the cheekily named L’affaire est Ketchup, a tiny eight-table eatery where young, hip chefs François Jobin and Olivier Lescelleur Saint-Cyr use an electric stove to cook their modern take on traditional dishes. The restaurant — which was featured on celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain’s travel and food show on CNN, Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown — takes its name from the French idiom for “everything is cool,” and Jobin and Lescelleur Saint-Cyr certainly live by this maxim. Dishes are presented on a simple black chalkboard, and come wintertime, the chefs rely heavily on local meats such as boar, foie gras and even guinea fowl. Dishes, like mega-indulgent bone marrow, are stuffed with all-season goodies that include carrots and onions, while the hearty, cool-weather stews — think along the lines of classic québécois blanquette (here made with pork rather than veal) — are spiked with quail egg, onion and mushrooms. Many of the menu offerings are family favourites, perfect for sustaining life through the seemingly endless Quebec winters.

END NOTE
FACE FORWARD In our selfie-obsessed era, five conceptual photographers upend expectations on what portraits should look like — and capture what gets lost when we turn the lens on ourselves. By Lisa Mesbur
C I N DY S H E R M A N
LIU BOLIN
GAB R I E L I SA K
Although Cindy Sherman’s self-portraits arguably birthed selfie-as-art, this American photographer’s Instagram was set to private until this past August. Now public, it’s interspersed with the stuff of everyday life. Her body of work treats the viewer to a new series of quintessentially Sherman selfportraits, framed sans irony on the selfie generation’s platform of choice.
Beijing-based performance artist and photographer Liu Bolin is often dubbed The Invisible Man for good reason. His portraits utilize detailed camouflage makeup, props and clothing that make the subjects “disappear.” The resulting images, which take up to 10 hours to set up, provide an intriguing take on the complex relationship between the individual and society.
Stark minimalist lines, limited colour palettes, surrealist elements… The work of Swedishborn, New York-based photographer Gabriel Isak’s photographs may be simple in form, but his carefully wrought imagery — almost always solitary or paired figures, motionless and contemplative within a dreamlike landscape — evokes deep emotional states and the universality of shared human experience.

It’s difficult not to respond viscerally to the portraits created by L.A.-based video director and photographer Kavan Cardoza. The antithesis of most contemporary portraiture, his mesmerizing symbolic imagery compels the viewer to look. Shrouded and engaged in intense struggle against invisible forces, Cardoza’s subjects evoke inner torment and a dark emotionality.
