of clear plastic bag, which then resulted in me having all my hand luggage swabbed for contraband flower remedies. Finally I got through and when I’d located my shoes and hopped across to The Man, he was giggling like a schoolboy at my predicament. Clearly I need to work on my guilty face. “If you’re a terrorist, you’re chucked!” he laughed. I reminded him to keep his smart comments to himself as joking about being a terrorist tends to get people ejected from airports and I was really looking forward to this holiday!

I think it’s fair to say that I don’t like airports. Every time I fly anywhere, I tell myself I’ll have everything ready, sail through security without a blip and even have all my liquids in a clear plastic bag like you’re supposed to. I’ll wander happily around duty free and pick up a bargain perfume, and all will be stress-free…yeah right.

The holiday, once we’d negotiated Stansted and a four-hour flight, was lovely – just what we both needed and I think we can both say that we survived our first holiday as a couple intact. I’ve realised that map-reading isn’t his forte, after being taken on a couple of really quite impressive wild goose chases around Tenerife looking for landmarks…and he’s realised that the reason I never go brown is that I insist on covering every inch of my body in Factor 50 and then complaining that

What really happened? Well, firstly my earrings and watch set the alarms off and I was frisked a little too enthusiastically by the Stansted security lady. When it was established that it was just my jewellery that was setting off the alarms, it still didn’t stop there. I had to take my shoes off and put them in a separate tray, which I couldn’t find afterwards. I had a telling off for not putting my liquids in the right type

My third summer with MiBootcamp - How time has flown by! It’s my favourite time of year as the clocks move forward and the nights get lighter. More people are now benefitting from getting at least two hours of vitamin D before the sun goes down. It’s the time now for getting in shape for the summer holidays. What better time to start outdoor exercising?

Nerves?

It’s time to make a change from the 30 minutes on the cross trainer or treadmill, add something different to your routine – and have fun at the same time.

Maybe some new “joiners” are slightly fearful that it will entail being shouted at, or running five miles without rest before hauling up timber poles. I love to hear what clients first expected once they’ve tried it for themselves- they usually seem to be pleasantly surprised!

Some people want to build their selfconfidence; others want to get work out of their heads before and after that long boring commute to work every day. I have come across them all.

I’ve worked with people from all walks of life in my eight years in the fitness industry and nine out of ten customers are professional working people who just want to get fit and maybe lose a few pounds whether for a holiday, appearance or, maybe, on medical advice – even for a better life insurance quote!

I like to vary the workouts constantly and I think my clients manage to stick with MiBootcamp because it’s a bit less about following set protocols. Whatever your goal may be, spring is in the air. The loveliest time of year… and a local mibootcamp beckons. Russell Byham - www.Mibootcamp.co.uk

Maybe with so many choices of bootcamp hitting the nation it’s hard to choose one? Let me assure you that there is something for everyone. This time of year I love to see new faces starting at MiBootcamp in Little Waltham, Chelmsford, and finding out their goals whether they’re just for there to get fit for a holiday or as part of a long term fitness goal and better all-round health and fitness.

Some people may feel slightly nervous going in a new direction with a bootcamp. At Mi bootcamp we offer a “Free to see if it’s for you” session.

Wedding Flower Trends 2012 Rustic country garden seems to be the key terms couples are using to explain their vision for wedding flowers. The use of natural materials such as twine and raffia create a more relaxed look for bouquets, buttonholes and table centres. For that ‘thrown together look’ texture can be achieved by using foliage and herbs that can be found in the garden such as Bay Leaves, Rosemary and Lavender these also add beautiful scents to arrangements. For the more adventurous bride succulents are an interesting way to add texture as shown. Table display from Chelmsford’s www.eternalbloom-chelmsford.co.uk

What to buy the couple with EVERYTHING It used to be so easy to pick the perfect wedding gift. You would either get a copy of the wedding list, compiled with the help of the Argos catalogue, or if you were a bit more upmarket you could have your wedding list held at Debenhams or John Lewis, and they would make sure that you didn’t get two toasters. Most people have lived together before they tie the knot these days, which means that towels, toasters and tea-sets aren’t likely to be on the list of things the blushing bride and groom covet. Increasingly, couples are asking for vouchers towards a honeymoon or a bigger purchase, sometimes they even specify ‘no gifts’ or charity donations.

East of India - Our Wedding Photo Album This gorgeous East of India cream fabric covered photo album with wooden applique heart is just perfect for storing those precious memories from the big day. Brilliant if the couple are going for a ‘do it yourself’ wedding, as a lot of couples are, and getting the photography done by a trusted friend. The album is absolutely gorgeous, and it holds up to 48 6 x 4” photographs, so it’s big enough for the job. Price: £12.99 - www.mollieandfred.co.uk

Everyone loves a gift, though, so if you’re stuck for something individual, and want to give a special couple something they will remember and cherish…look no further for our gift ideas with a difference.

Breakfast in Bed Set If you’re going to give this gift, make sure that you stipulate that they take it in turns to do the breakfast honours! This breakfast set has everything they need to rustle up a perfect breakfast in bed - and is already proving popular. The set includes two ceramic mugs, two egg cups, two shakers, two spoons, a box of coffee mix and a box of tea, all on a cutesy serving tray. Now whose turn is it…?

Shaping up for the big day As someone who recently married, I know the challenges a bride has in preparing for the big day. The key with regards to looking and feeling your best is to set realistic goals, based on the time period you have. The build-up to your wedding should be as exciting and enjoyable as the day itself, without putting any additional stress on yourself with regards to weight loss. Remember, if you are starting exercise for the first time, whilst it’s good to use the wedding as an incentive; try to also see this new regime as something you will continue in the future, for long term health. With this in mind, aim to pick exercise you will enjoy, such as a dance class or going for a jog with friends. If your specific goal is weight loss, try to avoid crash dieting as in many cases, you could end up putting all the weight back on once you resume a normal eating habit. Try to reduce portion sizes, eat a healthy balanced diet & cut out those naughty snacks! Increase water intake to ensure your skin is glowing on the day. Aim to exercise at

least three times a week (both cardiovascular and resistance), but also add “activity” into your routine on a daily basis, e.g. take the stairs rather than the lift, as these lifestyle changes will make a difference to calorie burn. A client of mine did exactly that. We set her three small, achievable targets for her wedding, with her main goal being to tone up. She told me she felt really confident in herself on the big day - fitter, healthier and firmer (see photo below.) Plus, I received a text from her on her honeymoon, saying she now looked great in her red bikini that she hadn’t worn for some time. The “Me-List” Celebrity. Red carpet glamour at a fraction of the price

In these days of doom-laden news and financial pressure we all need cheering up a bit. And what better way to do it than by wearing real A list jewellery, but at ‘Me-List’ prices. Inexpensive dressing up, with the added benefit of having people do a doubletake as you sweep confidently down the street, will do wonders for your ego and mood. The look is simple to achieve and needn’t cost the earth. Our favourite stylists like Gok Wan have already shown us how easy it is to copy the designer look for just a fraction of the price, but if you don’t have the time or skills to trawl the shops or the internet for bargains then there’s at least one alternative and that’s hiring the real thing; all kinds of fashion goodies are available to rent these days from Jimmy Choo shoes and Gucci handbags, to dresses worn by the celebs. Accessorising is by far the most important element of achieving celebrity style and good accessories can lift just about any outfit. Apart from the obvious stuff like shoes and

handbags, the things that will really grab attention are sunglasses and jewellery; the bolder the better. So, for sunglasses, buy them big and brassy and, most importantly, keep them on at all times. When it comes to jewellery, you can’t really go wrong if you copy what the real celebs are already wearing – just look at Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez or Nicole Kidman; just a few of the many stars frequently seen wearing the stunning and sometimes outrageous work of jewellery designer Rodrigo Otazu. Lady Gaga wore Rodrigo Otazu jewels during her performance on last season’s X Factor. Dramatic Jewels is an authorised stockist in the UK of Rodrigo’s jewellery and they’ve brought his current season’s collections, including his “I Do” bridal range to the UK for the first time. They can kit you out with the very latest look for less than you might think, and they’ve

introduced a hire service on the whole collection. So now you can look like an A List celebrity and walk along your own red carpet for much less than you’d think. You can rent Rodrigo’s jewels in one week blocks for just 30% of their retail price. Refreshingly, there’s no security deposit to pay or any additional carriage charges. Wedding Hair 2012 – by Gail Gardner The Joys of Spring! What wonderful words and I could not agree more. Spring brings joy to all, especially if you are soon to be married and are now considering your hairstyle for your wedding day. Finding that perfect hairstyle can often be quite a challenge so it’s important that you book your hairdresser early and have a trial to try out different styles a few weeks before your special day. I always recommend that you have your hair trial on the same day as your final dress fitting so that you can be sure that you have chosen your perfect hairstyle to suit you beautiful wedding gown. Your wedding hair trial should be a fun experience so take along a close family member or friend to give you an honest opinion. If there’s a catchphrase hairstylists and makeup artists could use to describe the trends they’re seeing in the brides of 2012, it would probably be ‘simple elegance.’ This spring, romance is in the air, and vintage and modern are engaging with each other, resulting in softer natural hairstyles. Or your Big Day, you’ll want to look beautiful, elegant and simply perfect with the right wedding hairstyle.

Short-Length Hair The look of romance is still possible for brides who don’t want to go through the trouble of growing their hair out for months before the big day. A short style works fantastically well with the elegant hair accessories available today. An updo is not out of the question for brides with short hair either. You would be surprised how the shortest hair can be styled into an elegant updo. Also, extensions are becoming even more popular with brides to help create the exact look you want for your wedding day.

Medium-Length Hair

Long-Length Hair

For medium length hair, take a relaxed approach to the up-do with an unstructured bun with a few stray tendrils. Mid-length hair is famous for its versatility, from a beautiful elegant up-do to a classic chignon. Soft loose waves also offer a very romantic look.

If you choose to wear your hair down, consider loose waves or even partly up. Tight buns are being replaced by less formal updos, gathered lower at the base of the neck for a softer romantic look.

This bride had mid-length hair and was convinced she would need extensions to achieve this hairstyle.

Braids are also an updo to consider. They’re a great way to add unique twists on classic styles. Even the ponytail can be glamorous, wear it on one side using pretty hair clasps. This bride had very long hair and wanted a romantic vintage updo.

This bride wanted to keep her long hair loose with romantic curls.

This bride had extensions as her hair was in the style of a short bob.

Winner of Best Wedding Make-up Artist (East of England) – The Wedding Industry Awards 2012 - Kelly Hollands, tells you how to get the perfect bridal look for your big day. The key to wedding day make-up is in the application and once this has been mastered your look should last all day long and through into the night without any touch-ups. Thankfully this doesn’t mean you need heavier makeup, but more about using the right products and applying them in the correct way to ensure not only longevity, but also that it will look great in all kinds of light, including your photograph’s flash! With my hints and tips for the perfect bridal look you can ensure you will look radiant all day and night! In the months leading up to your big day you need to invest time treating and looking after

your skin. Your daily routine should include cleansing, toning and moisturising morning and night. My favourite skincare range is Dermalogica – as well as having amazing skincare products they also offer a free face mapping analysis for your own personal product prescription. Visit their website at www. dermalogica.com/uk for your nearest stockist.

I always use a face primer to even out skin tone and provide a fantastic base for make-up to adhere to. My favourites are Yves Saint Laurent Matt Touch, ideal for oily skin and GOSH Velvet Touch which suits every skin type, especially hydrated skin. Make sure you use a primer specifically for eyes - I love Urban Decay Eye Potion Primer as it stops shadows from creasing and sliding.

My key tips for long-lasting, flawless make-up would be to always start your wedding day with applying a moisturiser to your face. Dermalogica’s Active Moist is a great light, oil-free product to suit all skin types.

I always work on the eyes first. It means the primer has time to sink into the skin and you can always wipe away any fallout from the eyeshadows. This is a complete must when creating a smoky eyed look for example as you won’t want the ‘punched in the eye’ look on your big day!

The products I’ve listed below are just some brands I would pick from on a daily basis for creating a full make-up application ideal for Bridal.

matte, lustre, frost, pearlescent and satin finishes in every shade imaginable. I love these brands for their longevitiy and high pigmentation. The Urban Decay palettes in Naked and Naked 2 are amazing for bridal – whether it be a classic English Rose, Vintage or Dramatic Smoky eyed look. Every bride needs a waterproof mascara on their wedding day. My favourites are Diorshow Blackout and Max Factor False Lash Effect. Unless you know you want a vintage look on your wedding day with bright red lips, either define the eyes or focus on the lips. Never do both. False strip lashes are a great way to

enhance the eyes or use eyelash curlers prior to using mascara if you don’t feel comfortable with lashes. Eyeliner will define the eyes and make them ‘pop’. Bobbi Brown Long Wearing Gel Eyeliner and Clinque are both easily blenable and are waterproof. As well as Airbase Airbrushed make-up I use a wide selection of liquid foundations including DiorSkin Forever, Chanel, and MAC Face & Body. A silicon-based foundation will ensure it stays in place all day/night. Use a concealor over foundation to cover dark under-eye circles and blemishes and set with a loose fine milled powder.

Vintage Dresses There’s no sign of the vintage trend going away in the near future, and one of the very best showcases for beautiful vintage-inspired designs is a wedding gown. Styles have changed a great deal over the decades but the mid-20th century still seems to be the era that inspires most brides. Which era is right for you? Here’s a very brief guide…

Thirties This amazing dress is cut on the bias, which means that it stretches and moulds to the body. The thirties were renowned for super-flattering diamond panelling and these lines all draw down the body, pointing over the bottom to really enhance your shape. The sexy keyhole opening at the back is subtle and understated, and teamed with a demure fully covered neckline. A bias cut dress like this will show off your curves while the seams across the hips define your shape. A figure-hugging dress like this suits curvy girls, hourglasses and pear-shapes too, as the shoulder detail balances the silhouette out.

Forties The 1940’s style dress is sometimes unfairly overlooked as thirties’ and fifties’ shapes are so iconic, but the higher waist on 40s style dresses are perfect for nipping in the waist, at its smallest area, right under the bust. This beautifully designed lace dress has vertical panels which will also slim you down, and suits all sizes. The wider straps and sophisticated A-line skirt complement each other perfectly to balance out the curves of hour glass and pear shaped figures.

Fifties Rock the 1950’s with a fantastic full circle dress, and a feminine shape which evokes the glamour of Hollywood and Marilyn Monroe. The full skirt is reminiscent of the fairytale princess and the dress is cut on the waist, making it perfect for showing off a more boyish figure and creating a curvy hour glass silhouette.

One Scoop or Two?

Ladies Fashion

The perfect look for this summer, for a wedding or otherwise, is the new pretty pastel trend that’s everywhere right now. Set to be one of summer 2012’s biggest trends, the new season palette suits just about everyone, with cool ice cream shades that come in pastel hues of pink, blue and yellow. The candy cuteness covers very item imaginable - from romantic dresses and floaty skirts for lazy spring and summer special occasions to teeny tiny shorts for beach and barbecue, and pretty accessories, headbands and bags. If you’re blessed with a porcelain pale complexion, a pair of spray-on skinnies or an adorable floaty chiffon skirt will keep the lighter shades away from your face and prevent you looking washed-out. Ease yourself into the trend with accessories and build up from there. Mixing and matching different colours is fine, but steer away from pairing two shades of the same colour together, unless you want to rock the pastel version of the dreaded double-denim disaster.

Hazaar of London Hazaar of London has come up with a romantic collection of bridal gowns and jewellery that’s designed to combine versatility with the romance of the big day. Hazaar’s founders Isoline Hickman and Rachel Farrimond met while studying Costume for the Performing Arts at the London College of Fashion in 2004. They decided to create a bridal range that would take a bride from day to evening without the need for a second dress, featuring elegant dresses with removable over or under skirts. The gorgeous collection showcases the duos love of classic style icons and designers including Dior and Grace Kelly, and Rachel and Isoline have fully immersed themselves in the design and creation process of each of their gowns; carefully sourcing fabrics, trims and embellishments from suppliers in the UK. Hazaar of London will be previewing the latest additions to their collection at White Gallery London, Battersea Park 20-22 May 2012, which includes a range of brooches, clasps and embellishments to give buyers the option to customise and personalise the clean simple lines of the gowns with individual bespoke detailing.

Get Le Whif Laptop Surf Pillow

Get the look – rather sexy iPad Cases One of a range of super-sleek iPad cases from Giant Sparrows, this sexy and exclusive Frida Kahlo image comes from the ‘Collections’ page. The case detail has been taken from ‘Self-Portrait on the Borderline between Mexico and the United States’, painted by Kahlo in 1932. Check out the Collections page – it brings together an eclectic range of art, from popular and famous images to lesser known pieces, all with a view to bringing art to your fingertips. Price: £44.95 www.giantsparrows.co.uk

Fed up with hot thighs from surfing on the sofa? This could be the very thing you need to allow you to use your laptop in comfort. The silicone buttons on this Swedish designed Bosign lap pillow allow air to circulate underneath the laptop so that it stays cool and so does the skin on your legs. The pillow is filled with micro balls to rest comfortably around the contours of your thighs, and it makes a great gift for someone who spends a lot of time glued to their laptop! The silicone buttons clip off, the cover unzips and you can give it a wash to freshen it up. The back has a silicone design to stop the pillow slipping forward off your knees. Price: £28.50 www.hirstandhirst.co.uk

Le Whif is a handy little thing for any man (or woman) trying to resist the lure of chocolate cravings - an inhaler that’s packed with tiny particles of milk chocolate! Just inhale Le Whif and a small amount of the particles are absorbed onto your tongue, which deals with your choc-cravings straight away. Scientists from Harvard University claim that a whiff or two can give you all the pleasure of chocolate without any of the guilt. They put their (very clever) heads together and came up with the idea of using particle engineering to create chocolate that was small enough to be airborne but too large to enter the lungs. Each Le Whif is fully biodegradable and allows for eight to ten puffs so that is plenty of puff to get your chocolate fix. It can be closed and reused so that you don’t need to inhale the whole thing at once…worth a try if your cravings are getting to your waistline! Price: £4.95 www.prezzybox.com

Spa Man – by Murray Burgess Well gentlemen, it’s a leap year this year so chances are your better half has proposed to you, you’ve been delighted to accept and now, following on with the whole role reversal theme, you’re organising the wedding itself, taking on all the stresses and strains that that entails. You’ve earned a break, a bit of rest and relaxation for all your hard work so far, so why not take some time out and visit a spa, as a little treat for yourself. OK, it may not be the usual way in which you treat yourself, but I can assure you it is well worth considering, having been lucky enough to visit The Malvern hotel and spa myself recently.

At first glance it may not appear to be your traditional spa; located on a business park in a building that can, at first glance, be mistaken for an office building. But once inside you get the more traditional feeling of being at a very modern spa, and a quick tour of the facilities by one of the friendly and knowledgeable staff shows you just how modern and well-equipped it is.

To eliminate some of that pre-wedding or post-work stress you have two main options; either you can work it off yourself using the well-equipped gym, or you can let someone else do it for you by having a treatment. Me, I had a very relaxing back, neck and shoulder massage, coupled with a facial which was surprisingly relaxing and refreshing. If only it felt that good when I washed my own face!

As well as having over 20 comfortable bedrooms, The Malvern also boasts two saunas, a steam room, salt grotto and a number of different showers, including Tropical Rain, Cool Fog and, for the braver men among you, a cold water Plunge Bucket. To really help you relax though they have a heated spa pool that you can enter indoors and, by means of a flexible partition, swim outdoors to enjoy the warm water and spa bubbles in the fresh air.

The Malvern also has a restaurant, which offers a good selection of meals for both carnivores and vegetarians, with good balanced meals of protein and carbs.

look the part for every big day

While it might seem like men have it easy when it comes to dressing for weddings, the combination of a plain black suit, white shirt and non-offensive tie often just feels like attire for another day at the office, rather than someone’s special day. Lakeside’s Personal Shopper, Angela Poplett, is here with some expert advice on how to break the mould and find some slick but suitable wedding attire for men. “The first thing to do when the invitation lands on your doormat is find out what kind of event it will be. There’s a big difference between a high-brow function and a low-key affair so

dressing appropriately is almost impossible unless you ask the question beforehand. “If you’re going to a wholly traditional wedding, nothing beats a chic suit, dress shirt and a pair of smart shoes. It might sound boring but the high street stores have some great items on offer at the moment that will soon have you rethinking that statement. “Rather than opting for basic black, choose a suit in a soft shade of grey. The Ben Sherman store at Lakeside currently stocks some of the best in gorgeous grey iridescent fabrics. Ben

Sherman suits are cut in very sleek, modern shapes and styles though, so you’ll need to ooze cool and have plenty of charisma to pull it off. “The men’s section in Zara has some similar styles on its shelves that will look particularly good on slimmer frames, so there really is something on offer for everyone. “You’ll need an equally sleek shirt to team with that suit so head to T.M. Lewin at Lakeside and browse through the John Francomb range. They guarantee to offer you something far more interesting than your dull, day-to-day office selection.

“To make sure you look fly from top to toe, you’ll also need some shoes to complete the outfit. Most men opt for black shoes with a grey suit but tan is a good alternative, particularly if you’ve gone for a pastel shade of shirt. Jones the Bootmaker is a great place to look – and they’ll even renovate them for you every few years! “For a more relaxed style of wedding, it’s often advisable to ditch the suit jacket and opt for a shirt and trouser combination. The key to keeping the look smart enough is to wear a crisp pair of tailored trousers with a dress shirt neatly tucked in at the waist.

“Ties aren’t always necessary, but if you do want to step things up a notch then a slim tie is always preferable. They always look stylish and will keep you right on trend. “You can be much more adventurous with your shirt selection if you’re only going to the reception, since you won’t have to worry about clashing with other guests’ outfits in the professional photographs. H&M at Lakeside offers some shirts at incredible prices and Debenhams is worth a visit too, particularly if you’re into brands.

The King & Allen guide to ... Choosing a suit for a wedding Choosing your wedding suit can be a difficult process. It’s probably your first time (and hopefully your last!) so even the most experienced suit buyer will need advice and off the peg shops will always try and sell you whatever they have in stock. The key to getting the wedding suit right is to make sure that the suit is stylish so that you don’t look like you’re wearing a business suit on your wedding day, whilst ensuring that you don’t upstage the bride! Top Wedding Mistakes – What to do about inviting children The thorny issue of of whether to invite children to your wedding can cause more problems than almost any other. Some couples can’t imagine a wedding without children while others want a kid-free zone. So what can you do? Your best bet when you’re trying to decide whether the little ones are welcome at the big day is to look at how many of the guests have little darlings of their own. If you seem to be the only one in your family or friends group that hasn’t heard the patter of tiny feet yet, it could be considered mean if you ban kids…although be prepared for a noisy wedding if you do. If your family all come with mini-mes, it’s probably best to err on the side of keeping everyone happy and invite the kids along too. A wedding is a bit of an excuse for a family reunion and to un-invite children could make you really unpopular with the older family members who haven’t seen their younger relatives for a while.

But I don’t want children there! If you do decide you want a peaceful, quiet, child-free day, you need to make it clear. Don’t rely on the invitations not expressly mentioning the children’s names, as this can be easily overlooked – parents tend to assume that they come as a family, unless specified otherwise. Don’t leave it too late to make it clear, either. If you decide right from the word go that you don’t want children there, don’t wait until the invitations go out to tell everyone. They might have bought outfits, and will have to plan for babysitters. It also avoids disappointment for the kids who will probably be excited about a big party – letting them down at the last minute will make sure you’re never going to be their favourite uncle ever again! What about small babies? New parents might be a bit put out at the idea of leaving their newborn at home, so be prepared to have people drop out if the blanket ban expressly says no babies too. You could quietly make an exception for infants – but again that leaves you open to accusations of favouritism, and you just know that the baby will decide she wants feeding just at the crucial, quiet moment…

Explaining yourself When it comes to the inevitable questions about why you don’t want the younger generation around the wedding breakfast table, it can be tricky to explain how you feel. Even if the truth is that you can’t stand the idea of kids running around and getting under your feet, or that you know some of your friends’ ideas of ‘relaxed parenting’ mean you’re going to be scared that the little angels will be instigating a vol-au-vent fight by 7.30, you have to be diplomatic. Blame money – say that you have a tight budget and can’t stretch to whole families as you need to keep the numbers down. Tell everyone it was ‘a difficult decision’ and stick to the party line. Remember it’s your wedding, your decision. And if you feel really guilty, simply buy extra wedding favours and send each parent away with an extra ‘party bag’…

Best dressed boys and girls They make a wedding, don’t they, the cute bridesmaids and pageboys, all done up to the nines in their best wedding gear? There’s a new name on the block when it comes to wedding wear for little ones, and that’s Little Eglantine. The range of super- cute outfits has been created by French designer Stephanie Staub, and she offers up personally-designed delicate dresses for flower girls, and sophisticated and stylish outfits for pageboys. Fabulous for weddings and parties, these gorgeous shirts and French shorts from 6 to 18 months will make the little boys effortlessly chic. Choose from the online boutique among long or short sleeved Peter Pan collar shirts in ivory or white cotton (from £35) and French shorts in cotton or taffeta (from £50). Little Eglantine has brought colour and playfulness to some well-photographed celebrity and society weddings, and we think you’ll agree the designs are adorable… www.littleeglantine.com

On the High Street If a designer wedding isn’t in your budget, there’s always the high street. Surprisingly good quality and much more affordable than a bespoke design, you might not think of sourcing your wedding party outfits from Tesco, but the Florence and Fred collection is actually rather adorable, and the bridesmaid’s dresses start at just £20 for a basic cream dress with a matching taffeta bag. A boy’s three piece brocade waistcoat set starts at £18. Debenhams has been in the weddings game for a good few years now, so it’s not a great surprise that they have a great range of affordable outfits – that are just a little bit special at the same time. The page boy and flower girl collections feature stunning dresses, the smartest of suits and all the accessories to make the day extra- special. Dresses start at around £30 for dresses for babies, and £48 for older girls, and come with a range of little details like petals, bows and even a gold corsage. Top the outfits off with these flower baskets from Fair Baskets – the pretty willow baskets are available from just £5 www.fairbaskets.co.uk For the boys, £22 for a very grown-up looking waistcoat, shirt and cravat set.

Some of the more unusual materials are also pretty expensive and some varieties feel quite rough underfoot, but they can be great if you want to buck the trend and give your home a really contemporary finish. “Conifers”

- Grant Whitaker

If any plant has had bad press in the last 10 years it would have to be the conifer. Cast your mind back to the “Neighbours From Hell” series on television and any local paper from the 90’s and you are bound to have read or seen stories regarding hedges that have grown out of control, or that are 60 feet tall and blocking out the day light. To be fair to the Leylandii, it wasn’t really its fault. The poor thing was discovered by accident in South Wales in 1888, the cross of two other conifers – the Monterey Cypress from California and the Alaskan Cedar. Its offspring, the Leylandii, was found to grow extremely fast – up to four feet a year, and since then it was been used as wind breaks, screens and hedging. This is all well and good, but if you try to recommend a conifer to someone for their garden, you are often met with the response, “Oh no, they get far too big!” And for this reason I am firmly in the ‘dislike’ camp for Leylandii. They have ruined the reputation of one of the most beautiful family of plants. There are hundreds of amazing dwarf and slow growing conifers to choose from. Not only are they evergreen to add interest all year round,

they range in many colours from rusty reds to bright yellows and blues. A properly planted conifer bed really can be a breath taking sight.

Here are a few varieties to get you started. Thuja ‘Rheingold’ is a golden rounded tree that turns a coppery orange in the winter. It will grow around three feet in ten years. Chamaecyparis ‘Boulevard’ is another rounded tree similar to Rheingold but this has silvery blue foliage that turns purplish blue in winter. It can grow three feet in ten years. Cryptomeria japonica ‘Sekkon Sugi’ is a wonderful Japanese cedar with spirally arranged foliage. The new growth has golden-yellow white tips and hang gracefully down. They can grow five feet in ten years. Junipur horizontals ‘Glauca’ is a ground cover plant which produces long branches that slowly cover the soil. It has a wonderful steely blue colour that can eventually cover around nine feet. These are just a few examples. Open your mind to the conifer again and you’ll never look back! Inspired

Heat the remaining oil in a large casserole dish which is large enough to fit the lamb. Add the sliced onions and whole spices and sauté until softened but not brown. Add the leg of lamb then either seal with foil or a lid or both. Place in the oven and cook for 1½ hours. Remove the foil and lid and baste. Cook for a further 30 minutes without the foil or lid until the lamb is golden brown, really tender and completely cooked through. Allow the lamb to rest for 10 minutes before carving. Spoon over the onions and pan juices to serve.

Thai Green Curry Fish Pie This East-meets-West recipe is a mouthwateringly original dish. Makes four small pot pies or one large pie. Preparation Time: 15 minutes Cooking Time: 25 minutes

Ingredients: • • • • • • • • • •

Thai Taste Rice Bran Oil, for frying 200g raw prawns, peeled and de-veined 400g firm white fish such as haddock or cod, cubed 3 shallots, finely sliced 150g button mushrooms, sliced 3 – 4 tbsp Thai Taste Green Curry Paste 400ml Thai Taste Coconut Milk 1/2 tsp Thai Taste Kaffir Lime Leaves 1 sheet puff pastry, fresh or thawed 1 egg, beaten

Method: 1) Heat the oil in a large pan and add prawns. Cook until just pink and remove from the pan. Wipe the pan with kitchen paper and add a little more oil. Add shallots and mushrooms, and cook for a couple of minutes until the shallots are soft and mushrooms lightly browned. 2) Stir in the curry paste and cook for another minute. Add the fish and prawns to the pan and stir to coat with the curry paste. Add the coconut milk and kaffir lime leaves. 3) Reduce the heat to low and simmer for about 10 minutes. 4) Preheat oven to 200°C, Fan oven 180°C, Gas Mark 6.

5) Unroll the pastry sheet onto a lightly floured work surface. Set one of the pie dishes upside down onto the sheet and cut a circle about 1cm larger than the dish. Repeat four times. 6) Divide the fish mixture between the pie dishes. Brush the dish edge with water and place a pastry lid over the top of each dish, pressing firmly onto the pastry rims to seal. Cut some holes in the top to allow steam to escape. 7) Brush the top of each pie with beaten egg, then bake for about 15-20 minutes until the pastry is puffed and golden brown. (If making one large pie cook for 20- 25 minutes). 8) Serve the pies hot with a selection of vegetables.

Taking the stress out of buying a used car Buying a used car or van needn’t cause you a headache. If your budget won’t stretch to a brand new set of wheels then a pre-owned vehicle can be a great choice – and save you lots of cash to boot! But there are a few things that you need to be aware of before you part with your hard-earned money. Inspired Essex asked the team at Airport Fleet Services, Stansted for the heads up on buying a used vehicle. With over 60 years experience in the automotive industry, the Airport Fleet Services experts will not only help you find the right car, but also service, MOT and maintain it. Andy Thompson (Director, pictured) says “before you even lift the bonnet you should consider these 11 things”……. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

Ask to see all the paperwork. Make sure it is original and not copies. It’s best to view the car in daylight and maybe take a friend along in case you miss anything. If you are not an expert then arrange for the car to be inspected by a qualified car mechanic (Airport Fleet Services can provide this service). Check out the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). It should match the logbook. Make sure the mileage in the service history is in line with the mileage displayed in the car. There are companies that will carry out finance checks to see if there is any finance outstanding on the vehicle. If the vehicle is over 3 years old it should have a valid MOT certificate to be considered roadworthy.

8. 9. 10. 11.

Have a thorough look at the tyres (including the spare) and use a tread gauge to make sure that they are all legal. If you do go ahead with the purchase, get a receipt. Complete the ‘new keeper’ part of the v5C (logbook) and ensure it’s sent to the DVLA Make sure your insurance is valid before you drive away.

“We are always happy to offer advice on second hand vehicle purchases and can carry out inspections on cars and commercial vans for a small fee. Our garage is located near Stansted Airport and is equipped with state-of-the-art technology. We are licenced to carry out MOT testing for class 4 (cars) and class 7 (commercial vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes).”

Business

The LowTax Group 2012 Initial Budget review The 2012 budget had much of the same noises we have heard from the government over the last few months. George Osborne has made clear his intention to tackle tax avoidance amongst the wealthy, at the same time he has appeased the Liberal Democrats with a watered down mansion tax and a watered down tycoon tax. There are benefits to companies and individuals, as the coalition aim to stimulate growth and ease the tax burdens on working families.

Corporation Tax Rate In a boost for British businesses, from April 2012 the main rate for corporation tax will be reduced by a full percentage more than was previously planned to 24%. There will be further reductions to 23% in April 2013 and 22% in April 2014. This is not just accelerating a pre-planned decrease, but a further drop in the main corporation tax rate. The LowTax Group welcome these changes, which can only be good for business and encourage growth amongst Britain’s leading entrepreneurs.

Individuals The government has set out to ‘ease the financial burdens on low and middle income working families’. From April 2013, the personal allowance will rise by £1,100 taking it to £9,205 in total, the largest single increase for 30 years. For those in the higher rate tax brackets, the 50p tax rate will be scrapped in April 2013 and high earners will pay 45% tax on earnings above £150,000.

Calculations based on an individual aged under 65 paying employee NICs (not contracted out). Gross income refers to pay only (i.e. all gross income is subject to income tax and Class 1 NICs). Income tax calculations assume no other allowances or deductions. NICs calculations are on a weekly basis and then annualised. All figures are round to the nearest £10.

Child benefit Child benefit will be phased out for households where someone has an income in excess of £50,000 a year and withdrawn entirely for households with an earner above £60,000. For households where someone has an income between £50,000 and £60,000 child benefit will fall by 1% for every £100 earned over £50,000. Although this has removed the ‘cliff edge’ effect, discrepancies will arise when a household with two people earning £50,000 are better off than a household with a single earner of £100,000. As a result of these changed many middle income families, especially those with only one earner in the household, will now find themselves worse off.

they align with the personal allowance. This will generate £1.25 billion for the government at the expense of pensioners. Although the government argue there is no cash loss to pensioners, they have removed a previously promised allowance that will have a huge impact on many of today’s already struggling pensioners.

Mansion Tax A watered down ‘mansion tax’ will be applied to individuals buying property valued above £2million with a 2% raise in stamp duty to 7%. Properties valued above £2m which are purchased through a company will now be subject to a whopping 15% stamp duty. The LowTax Group view this 15% stamp duty as nothing more than an anti-avoidance measure. Those purchasing such properties will now be forced to purchase in their own names and pay the extra 2% in stamp duty.

Pensioners Targeted

Anti Tax-Avoidance

Aside from those earning over £150,000, the main ‘losers’ in today’s budget are 4.41 million pensioners who will be worse off. Pensioners will feel the burden for years to come through the freezing of age-related allowances (ARA’s). The ARA will be frozen at 2012-13 levels until

The government’s anti tax-avoidance measures will now see a 25% cap on income tax reliefs above £50,000. Alongside the consultation on General Anti Avoidance Rule’s these factors threaten to do serious harm to the tax avoidance industry.

Overall individuals earning below £100,000 will be better off in 2012-13 and in 2013-14 by approximately £200 each year. Despite the axing of the 50p tax rate, by 2013-14 those earning £150,000 will still find themselves taxed £380 more than today.

Enjoy The Bluebells And Help Canine Partners In Essex Spring is in the air, so why not put on your walking boots and take part in Canine Partners annual Bluebell Walk and help raise money to provide more assistance dogs for people with physical disabilities. The Bluebell Walk will take place on Sunday 6th May at Langford Grove, Nr Maldon, at 11.30am, covering a distance of two miles, which is set amongst 92 acres of picturesque countryside. There will be a BBQ (included in the ticket price), children’s quiz, merchandise stall, Essex Gourmet ice cream and a cake sale by The Vintage Tea Company. You will also get to see a demonstration with partnerships and puppies about the work of the Charity. The fundraising event is part of the Charity’s national Bluebell Walk Campaign, which has raised over £100,000 in the past eight years. All funds raised from this walk will help the Charity to train more assistance dogs to transform the lives of people with disabilities, including wounded servicemen and women in conjunction with Help for Heroes.

The funds raised will help the team in Essex train more dogs to change the lives of people with disabilities like Alison Wyatt from Colchester who has multiple sclerosis. “Prior to having canine partner Maddy, it was difficult to bend, pick things up and reach far away objects due to being in a wheelchair. As soon as I met Maddy I felt happiness and love, especially when she came home with me last year. Day to day she helps me with jobs and moving about that I cannot do. Life has become so much easier and Maddy has allowed me to be more confident and start to socialise again.”

The Broomfield Hospital Medical Photography department were able to make use of the fund when they purchased a new dermascope attachment. The dermlite/scope shows the skin structure just below the surface of the skin and provides a significantly enhanced image of moles/lesions and gives the consultant what can be a diagnostic photograph. Jackie Kelly, Head of Medical Photography, said “The attachment fits to the front of a camera lens and illuminates the skin at a low angle in all directions, making the skin’s upper layers more transparent, and making deeper pigment patterns and structures visible. The attachment will be really useful and will be used regularly - certainly each week, and usually whenever there are dermatology clinics running.” Pictured: Jackie Kelly shows how the camera works with the dermascope attachment

CAN YOU HELP with Fundraising?

Local Support

To find out how you can help raise funds, organise an event, or donate money

Mid Essex Hospitals Charities Foundation was set up back in 1991 to look after charitable donations to the hospital, and still operates in this way today.

Patients, visitors and staff on dedicated wards or departments have all benefitted for the generosity of people saying a big thank you for the care they have received, or in memory of a loved one. But sometimes people give donations directly to the hospital without any special wishes, and in these cases a special committee helps to decide how best to use this money to benefit the hospital.

Tree donation improves woodland areas Our local community make a huge difference to life at Broomfield Hospital, through fundraising and donations as well as practical gifts which all help ensure we provide the highest quality care to our patients.

New equipment helps Hospital Radio broadcast far and wide Thanks to a grant from Mid Essex Hospital’s charitable fund and a generous donation from the Rotary Club of Chelmsford Mildmay, Hospital Radio Chelmsford can now provide even more great entertainment to patients at Broomfield Hospital. Hospital Radio Chelmsford (HRC) already brings patients 24 hour entertainment and information and a wide selection of popular music requested by patients. For many patients, it’s a welcome distraction, and a vital link to life outside of the hospital ward. With this extra money, HRC have been able to buy a brand new mixing desk that can be used in the studio based at the hospital or transported to other events. The presenters know how important it is to offer listeners a wide variety of programmes and this new equipment gives them the opportunity to report LIVE from local events. Graham Medhurst, Chairman of HRC, said: “We were really keen to purchase this new equipment to enable us to broadcast from outside the studios so we’re delighted our application for funding from the hospital’s charitable funds was successful. Now we can bring patients all the action from wherever we go! Our team of volunteers is always expanding so we’ll also use the new mixing desk to give us more flexibility in the studio.”

Pictured: Mid Essex Hospital Trust Chairman, Sheila Salmon tests out the new equipment with Robert Cappin (Vice President of Rotary Club of Chelmsford Mildmay) and Graham Medhurst (chairman of HRC)

How you can help A gift to our general purpose fund means your donation can be spent on items that the hospital most needs. A team of hospital staff, including consultants and nurses, work together to identify where your money can be spent. Alternatively, you can request that your donation be given to a specific department or ward for patients’ benefit, or to help education or amenities for the staff in those areas. To make a donation, please send a cheque made payable to Mid Essex Hospitals to the following address: Charities Office Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust Broomfield Court Annexe Pudding Wood Lane Chelmsford Essex CM1 7EW
