Norway

Without hesitation, I would recommend this tour and destinations. We like to travel to new places since there are so many places to see and we rarely visit the same place twice…but I would go back to Norway and Finland again in a heartbeat! We were captivated by the Stegastein Viewpoint in Norway, it was one of our favourite stops of the entire trip!

India

A magical trip to India thanks to Inspiring Vacations and our amazing tour guide, Tony. Viewing the Taj Mahal was an unforgettable moment – it was absolutely incredible to view such a historical structure with my own eyes.

What to do, see and where to play

Finland declared the world’s happiest country for its sixth consecutive year

The World Happiness Report has once again revealed the world’s happiest countries according to a mix of economic and survey data. Claiming the top spot for a sixth year in a row is Finland, which continues to be home to some of the world’s happiest and healthiest citizens. Finland’s Scandinavian neighbours came in close behind, with Denmark, Iceland, Netherlands and Sweden all taking a well earned spot within the top ten. Although these Nordic countries may not be home to the palm-filled beaches we may typically associate with happiness, their strong institutions, equality and safety, help to make these countries some of the world’s most idyllic places to live.

Hong Kong to giveaway 500,000 free plane tickets

The Hong Kong department of tourism has announced an ambitious plan to draw more tourists in with their 'Hello Hong Kong' campaign. Included in the campaign is a huge giveaway of half a million round-trip tickets to the bustling cultural hub to help welcome visitors back. With its nature parks and islands, iconic skyline, enviable shopping and sumptuous cuisine, Hong Kong offers an exciting mix of modernity, culture and adventure for all kinds of travellers.

A classical whodunnit rail experience

Luxury hospitality group Belmond is channelling Agtha Christie with the announcement of their new ‘Moving Murder Mystery’ rail experience. Taking place on the iconic British Pullman, whose interior channels the glamour of the roaring 20s and 30s, the train departs from London Victoria station for a five-hour round trip through the Kent countryside. With select departures operating throughout the remainder of 2023, the immersive experience hosts an ensemble of 10 unique characters each with their own unique backstories and motives. Each actor is tasked with sharing their story and dropping clues for discerning passengers to decode. As the drama unfolds, travellers are all treated to a decadent five-course meal.

Melbourne to get its own Monopoly theme park

The world’s most popular board game is opening its second ever theme park. With the first Monopoly Dreams theme park opening in Hong Kong in 2019, Australia’s culture capital is set to open its second iteration in Melbourne Central. The huge 1,650 sqm space right in the heart of the city will include a total of 15 different Monopoly themed attractions across two separate zones: Monopoly City and Monopoly Mansion. Included is a 4D theatre experience and the chance to collect Monopoly money that can be used at the park’s retail store and café.

Unveiling the mysteries of Cappadocia

Take a walk through time at Türkiye’s open air museum

Known for its otherworldly lunar landscape, Cappadocia has a long and storied history dating back centuries. There’s no better place to learn about the early settlers and soak in the ingenuity of its cave dwelling inhabitants than the Göreme Valley Open Air Museum.

Nestled in among the volcanic cone shaped fairy chimneys (also known as hoodoos), the museum hosts a series of monasteries carved from the soft rock unique to the region. Many of the churches are home to beautifully preserved frescoes; historic murals from the ancient Byzantine period depicting religious scenes from the bible. With a total of 15 churches and 11 refectories dating all the way back to the 10th-century, the open air museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the life of Cappadocia’s early Christian settlers.

These astonishing cave structures are only a small portion of the many strewn throughout the Göreme valley.

Settlers also carved out their homes and whole cities in underground caves as a means to protect themselves from local tribal groups. With a variety of boutique underground hotels operating in the town of Göreme, you can also choose to stay in one of these caves during your stay.

The museum is best explored by following the cobbled path winding in a circular motion past each of the monasteries. Make sure to take your time as you stroll through these remarkable historic structures.

STREET EATS IN SOUTH KOREA

Five of the tastiest must-eats in South Korea

KOREAN PANCAKES

There is no shortage of both sweet and savoury pancakes, often with a hearty filling. Try the simple, flat, pajeon, which is an eggy pancake with scallions, or delicious hotteok, which are small sweet pancakes that come stuffed with various kinds of fillings (peanuts, honey, and cinnamon are just a few) – think of it as a Korean doughnut.

GIMBAP OR KIMBAP

Japan isn’t the only culture with a sushi food tradition – Korean sushi, or gimbap, deserves its fair share of the spotlight. In true Korean style, gimbap usually comes with a bit of kimchi and pickled garnishes – there are often meat-free types filled with tofu and veggies. Mayak gimbap is an extra-famous specialty at Seoul’s Gwangjang street market, which translates to 'narcotic gimbap' for its addictively snackable quality – this is a simple three-veggie gimbap served with an irresistible dipping sauce.

BUNGEOPPANG

MANDU

Who doesn’t love dumplings? Mandu are a delicious street food all across the country, and can be filled with mixtures of kimchi, meat, and vegetables. Enjoy mandu fried, steamed, or boiled.

These golden fish-shaped dessert treats are served with sweet fillings like red bean, custard, choux cream, chocolate, and other experimental flavours. It’s a bit like a stuffed waffle, and despite its shape, contains no fish whatsoever. Flowershaped variations are called gukhwappang

TTEOKBOKKI

These spicy, chewy rice cakes have a royal heritage, but are now enjoyed by all. If you see these tube-shaped cakes speared onto a skewer, they’re called tteokkochi. While you can absolutely snack on tteokbokki on their own, the actual rice cakes can be found in all kinds of Korean soups and stews.

A visit to South America

Richard reflects on his tour of South America with his wife, Odette

What prompted you to book your tour?

Machu Picchu was always high on our bucket list of travel destinations, and we had been hearing reports that the number of tourists allowed to visit would be substantially reduced in the coming years to allow the site to recover from overuse (we had been looking at travelling to South America pre-COVID and originally was booked to leave in June 2020). Once the decision was made on Machu Picchu we started looking into what else South America could offer and we were excited to see the destinations that the 19 Day South America tour would bring us.

Did your expectations meet reality?

Absolutely 100%. South America is an amazing continent with each country offering so many differing experiences from history, scenery, and food. One thing that they all had in common was the warm and friendly people who were happy to meet you.

Any surprises?

For all the bad publicity that Rio attracts around safety we certainly felt safe during our stay and even ventured out to meet the locals.

What were the highlights of this tour for you?

The obvious highlights are in the destinations themselves however our biggest highlight was being with tour guides they have an absolute passion for their country and city. The guides ensured that all of our expectations were met and loved sharing their experiences, their passion, and their knowledge.

Did you do any optional tours? If yes, which ones and would you recommend them?

We chose most of the optional tours as we saw this as our opportunity to immerse ourselves in the culture of the country. Our top three optional tours were Rainbow Mountain Day Trip – challenging and so worthwhile. Such a sense of achievement getting to the top, and the view was breathtaking; the Gran Adventura – Iguazu Falls; fun with a capital F, sit back and enjoy the adventure; Eat Rio Food Tour – fantastic guide who took us to places the average tourist would not visit. We ate and drank with the locals, highly recommended.

What do you say to those pondering whether or not to book?

Book it – you will not regret it!

Any advice for future travellers?

Remember to be open-minded and not sweat the small stuff. Travelling across a number of countries there are bound to be some small hiccups, but it all adds to your story when you get back home.

ISLAND SUITS YOU? Which Queensland

No matter which type of holiday you're looking for, there's an island that will tick all your boxes

Scattered along the Sunshine State’s 7000 km-long coastline, from Brisbane to the Great Barrier Reef and beyond, are pockets of paradise accommodating the laziest of leisure seekers to the most adventurous of adrenaline junkies. So, which island suits you best?

FOR A ROMANTIC GETAWAY

Gather your sweetheart and make your way north to picturesque Hamilton Island. Luxury haven Qualia resides here, but so do a bevy of more budgetfriendly accommodation options. Take a look at Palm Bungalows, Reef View Hotel, and Beach Club. No matter where you stay, you’ll be able to enjoy the azure waters and alabaster sands for which the car-free island is famed, or those of nearby natural wonder Whitehaven Beach.

FOR ADVENTURE

Ready your sense of adventure, for there’s escapades to be had on heritage-listed K'gari (Fraser Island). The world’s biggest sand island at 123-km, K'gari is a playground for those who prefer not to sit idle for too long. Armed with a 4WD (you’ll need it for island access), cruise your way through tourist hot-spots Lake McKenzie, Eli Creek and Maheno Shipwreck, or past Indian Head for a challenge.

Accommodation isn’t lacking either. Choose from 45 national park campgrounds, Kingfisher Bay Island Resort and Eurong Beach Resort. If your style of adventure is more coral cay than sand-island, North West island off the coast of Gladstone is for you.

This remote coral cay is surrounded by nature’s finest, where your daily agenda is focused on snorkelling and enjoying the simpler things in life like plucking dinner directly from the neighbouring waters.

ISLAND HOPPER | QUEENSLAND
MAIN: Orpheus Island

FOR THE ALL-INCLUSIVE RESORT

Leisure seekers will find a friend in Tangalooma Island Resort on Moreton Island. While it sits just an hour from Brisbane city, this waterborne pocket feels a world away thanks to its collection of shipwrecks, surf breaks, and seemingly endless sandy stretches begging to be explored.

Let the resort take care of your holiday schedule; they can cater to any cravings for a dive, sand toboggan, or quad bike. Get to know the locals better at the feeding of the wild dolphins which takes place in the shallows every evening.

FOR SECLUSION

Peace and quiet is the specialty of luxury escape Bedarra Island, nestled just off the coast from Mission Beach. A haven for the rich and famous, Bedarra is the country’s most exclusive island, with its resort accommodating just 32 guests at a time, making you feel as though you’ve got the place to yourself.

As pretty as it is private, visitors can indulge in the island’s mass of unspoilt rainforest and the crystal clear waters of the neighbouring Coral Sea, traversing the terrain by the resort’s army of private dinghies.

FOR THE BUDGET-CONSCIOUS

Locals flock to North Stradbroke Island, or Straddie as it’s been dubbed. The quaint island, not far from Brisbane, is a 38-km haven of surf and sand, and home to plenty of accommodation options to suit every budget. You don’t have to dig deep into your pockets to enjoy your time here; unpowered camp sites are plentiful, but so too are holiday rentals and hotels.

Activities here are plentiful too, but conveniently don’t cost a penny! Think surfing, 4WDing, fishing, diving and more.

FOR RELAXATION

Get back to basics on Magnetic Island on the Great Barrier Reef, just a 20-minute ferry ride from Townsville. This is not a place that specialises in all the bells and whistles, but rather offers a chance to get back in touch with nature.

There’s plenty to do here. Swim in one of the 23 beaches and bays littered amongst the rocky granite headlands, and explore the surrounding hoop pine forests. Penchant for animals? You’re in luck. More than two-thirds of the Island is classified as a national park, meaning Magnetic Island is a haven for native flora and fauna, including rock wallabies, koalas, possums and more than 100 different bird species.

16 INSPIRING VACATIONS MAGAZINE | MAY/JUNE 2023 INSPIRED TO VISIT QUEENSLAND? Check out our tours here ISLAND HOPPER | QUEENSLAND

FOR ISOLATION

Get lost (quite literally) with a trip to Haggerstone Island. You’ll find the littleknown pocket of paradise off the Cape York Peninsula on the tip of Queensland. Its status as a private island means privacy is promised; only a small number of guests are catered to at a time at the cluster of timber buildings which reside within its borders.

Australian fauna are no stranger to these shores. Nearby sits one of the largest Green Turtle rookeries in the world, and the bounty of fish species which call the surrounding corals of the Great Barrier Reef home.

FOR DIVING ENTHUSIASTS

In the heart of the Great Barrier Reef you’ll greet Orpheus Island and the much-revered Orpheus Island Lodge sitting in a sheltered bay on the western side. Considered one of the district’s best-kept secrets, the island’s only beachside escape (aside from camp sites) is pure luxury; guest numbers are only 28 at a time.

But its location isn’t just picturesque. Orpheus Island is a must-visit for snorkelling and diving enthusiasts alike; its base on the fringe of the Reef means that you’ll enjoy easy access to the 1500 species of marine life who frequent its crystalline waters.

FOR FANS OF LUXURY

A fellow victim of Cyclone Debbie, Hayman Island has emerged like a lavish phoenix from the ashes following the A$120 million revamp of its key resort, the much-anticipated Hayman Island by Intercontinental. Which is the best way to spend your days here? However you choose! The tropical escape sits at the very north of the Whitsundays, meaning easy access to iconic landmarks like Whitehaven Beach.

Nearby in the Whitsundays lies Daydream Island Resort where you can snorkel straight off the beach, indulge at the multiple dining options, explore the island's famous living reef or simply spend your days relaxing by the pool.

FOR ANIMAL LOVERS

Making your way down the Great Barrier Reef you’ll find Lady Elliot Island at the southernmost coral cay. Not far from Bundaberg, the island itself sits within the highly protected ‘Green Zone’ meaning marine creatures are its specialty. Explore the sanctuary snorkel in hand and you’ll greet the 12,000 species which reside here. Think manta rays, turtles, fish, and plenty of vibrantlyhued coral.

9 Adventures

IN PORTUGAL

From rustic surf enclaves with laidback locals to pulsating cities that teem with colour, Portugal is a European destination that serves up experiences for all ages and interests

20 INSPIRING VACATIONS MAGAZINE | MAY/JUNE 2023

As the summer sun sets on the Southern Hemisphere, follow the sun to Portugal and enjoy these nine adventures.

Learning to surf in Aljezur, one of only a few small towns within the Costa Vicentina, isn’t for the faint-hearted – the water temperature of the Atlantic beaches can be very cold. But if you’re happy donning a wetsuit, the beaches and multiple surf schools of Aljezur make for the perfect place to learn how to surf. The surf enclave has a chilled-out vibe and the friendly locals are always up for a chat. After a day sunbathing or surfing at Arrifana Beach, head to O Paulo for sunset. The authentic, local restaurant serves up delicious seafood fare with killer ocean views to boot.

2. GO WINE TASTING IN THE DOURO VALLEY

If quaffing wine and picnicking among lush vines piques your interest, the stunning Douro Valley is a must. From April to October, the hills are quite literally alive as wine connoisseurs travel to the Alto Douro wine region to make the most of the balmy weather and magical UNESCO World Heritage Site. Go wine tasting first at Quinta do Vallado, a design hotel surrounded by a vineyard, then hop over to Quinta do Popa for more vino and a pre-ordered picnic basket of cheese, regional bread, roasted sausage, codfish fritters and more. A boat cruise on the beautiful Douro River is the perfect way to end a perfect day.

3. LOSE YOURSELF IN TAVIRA

Not far from the border of Spain lies the stunning town of Tavira on Portugal’s Algarve coast. The picturesque town is loved for its cobblestone streets, domes, churches and Moorish architectural influences. No trip to Europe is complete without people watching in a sociable square, and Portugal does squares pretty well. One of the best is Praca da Republica in the centre of Tavira’s Old Town. A swim at the emerald-green swimming hole and waterfall at Pago do Inferno is a must-do.

4. EXPLORE LISBON BY NIGHT

Portugal’s chicest city is alluring, bustling and intoxicating all at once. In terms of capital cities, Lisbon punches way above its weight in the food, wine, history, music and transport stakes. Ride rickety old trams up and down steep hills, stumble upon colourful murals and take a free walking tour to get a taste of the history – and that’s just the daytime. When dark falls, the city drops her veil and becomes a pulsating hub for nightlife. H10 Duque de Loulé is the place for a stylish pre-dinner drink while Lux, with its rooftop terrace and riverside views, is the place to dance.

5. ROAD-TRIP FROM LISBON TO LAGOS

The coastline in Portugal is one of the best in Europe. Forget jam-packed pebbly beaches, Portugal’s sandy beach coastline is much like Australia’s. The perfect way to see all of it and more is via your own three or four-day self-drive itinerary, allowing you to stop a while in quaint towns and explore lesser-known beaches. Some of the best-kept secrets include Praia da Amoreira in the northwest of the Algarve, Zambujeira do Mar, and Porto Covo in Alentejo.

6. TAKE A FORTIFIED WINE TOUR IN PORTO

It would be rude to visit Porto without sampling the very thing that received its name from Portugal’s second-largest city. A great way to see the city (before sipping vino all afternoon) is by taking a 6.3km one-way walk or run along the Douro River. The majority of port producers including Graham’s Port, a family run business established in 1820, are on the Vila Nova de Gaia side of the river. A guided tour of the working cellar, Graham’s 1890 Lodge is by appointment only, so book ahead.

7. GO BEACHCOMBING IN LAGOS

Picture-perfect Lagos in the Algarve is a haven for visitors thanks to its walled old town, sandy coves, aqua-blue grottos and charming, white-washed architecture. The town is home to some of the best beaches you will ever lay eyes on, many of which are nestled at the foot of a staircase and surrounded by looming limestone cliffs that rise up to 20 metres. Must-see beaches include Ponta da Piedade and Praia do Camilo.

8. EXPLORE A MAGICAL HILL TOWN

The breathtaking town of Sintra has a magical quality about it. Lord Byron raved about it and lovingly penned a description of the town as a ‘glorious Eden.’ Fairytale-like structures abound in the misty hilltop town. Sintra’s most famous sight is the multi-coloured façade of the Pena Palace, a notable example of Portuguese architecture in the Romantic period. After snapping your pictures, head into town to shop for everything from art, vintage finds and furniture to curiosity pieces, local produce and handmade ceramics.

9. GET YOUR FIX OF HISTORY IN EVORA

Located in Portugal’s Alentejo region, Evora is a UNESCO site famous for its gothic and baroque architecture, wide streets and white-washed houses. The Cathedral of Evora, built between 1186 and 1250, is a fascinating piece of history while the Chapel of Bones, built from more than 5,000 skeletons, is an eerie yet amazing stop to add to your bucket list.

QA &

What has been your favourite holiday so far?

A road trip to the South Island, New Zealand in summer 2019. Starting in Waihopai Valley, going around the island down the West Coast via Greymouth, Hokitika, Wanaka, Dunedin and finishing in Christchurch. I enjoy the chilled vibe of the South Island a lot; I visited a couple of abandoned towns up in the mountains and spent time out in the wild.

What’s your favourite destination?

So far it has been Karangahake Gorge and Bethells Beach, both in New Zealand. There’s lots of lush greenery at the gorge. Bethells Beach is very rugged and feels like a place out of this world.

What’s your number one tip for visitors?

Go visit these destinations if you want solitude or to regain balance and connection with yourself.

Which famous person would you most love to travel with and why?

Not too much into celebrities, but feel like Nick Carter or Kath and Kim would be good/fun travel buddies.

Did you always want to work in travel?

I’ve worked across many industries, but travel is definitely the most vibrant and I definitely resonate with it.

Where are you off to next?

Would love to explore the Southern Ocean Drive, South Australia and national parks in Victoria during the upcoming holidays.
