IN THE KNOW What to do, see and where to play
Big Ben revealed The scaffolding of London’s Big Ben is finally being removed. Starting in 2017, with a bill of nearly 80 million pounds, the restoration project’s most prominent change is undoubtedly the famous bell tower’s new clock face. Previously black, the clock’s hands and numbers have been restored to their original Prussian blue and gold combination. Now, after a silence of over four years, the chimes of this iconic structure – that have sounded through London since 1859 – will once again ring.
Ice Ice Baby

One of Sweden’s most iconic hotels has re-opened its doors for its 32nd season since 1989. Rebuilt each year, the Icehotel Winter in Jukkasjärvi exists only between December and April before melting away come spring. Boasting up to 20 standard ice rooms and 12 individually designed and sculpted art suites, it’s constructed out of snow and ice harvested from the nearby Torne River. Kept at an icy cool temperature of between -5 and -8 degrees Celsius, guests have the surreal experience of sleeping comfortably while surrounded by ice thanks to the supplied reindeer hides and thermal sleeping bags. And for those travelling outside the winter months, the aptly-named neighbouring Icehotel 365 offers deluxe ice suites year-round that are kept cool with solar energy to outlast the summer heat.

Wonders of the woodland Western Australia’s newest national park is focused on safeguarding some of Australia’s rarest and most vulnerable wildlife. A couple of hours (180km) south-east of Perth, Dryandra Woodland National Park is the first national park in the state’s Wheatbelt region. The former state forest is home to numbats (the state’s animal emblem), woylies, bilbies and mound-building malleefowl. Barna Mia, nestled in the park, is a predator-proof animal sanctuary where visitors can take a guided tour to see threatened native animals in a nocturnal setting. A formal park naming process is still under way.
For the first time in nearly 60 years, the Trans Bhutan Trail is once again open to intrepid travellers looking for their next trekking adventure. Once a popular pilgrimage route, this fully-restored trail will offer access to over 400 historic and culturally significant sites through breathtaking Himalayan landscapes. A number of permits granting access to the trail will be available for international travellers from April. Stretching across the nation through nine districts, eager adventurers can choose to hike the complete 250-mile trail in just over a month or, for those short on time, opt for one of the shorter segments. TOUR NOTES | TEA IN KYOTO
MATCHA MADE IN HEAVEN Embrace the ritual of a Japanese tea ceremony
F
WORDS BY EMILY HUMPHREY
orget matcha lattes down at your local cafe – this is the real deal. In a land steeped in tradition, there’s no better place than ancient Kyoto to take in a Japanese tea ceremony, chado (‘the way of tea’). Preparing, presenting and appreciating matcha (a fine green tea powder) is a beautiful, centuries-old ritual of cultural significance. It’s an elaborate ceremony that embraces four basic principles: purity, tranquility, harmony and respect. Although seen as a trend in the Western world, matcha tea found its place in Japan in the 12th century, namely with Zen Buddhists, which might explain the somewhat meditative nature of the tea ceremony. Every step is a precise art, from the correct way to turn and drink from the traditional cup to the well-honed technique with the bamboo whisk. Learn about tea etiquette, the important traditions behind the practice and have a go preparing the matcha tea yourself.

3. RETURN OF THE JEDI REDWOOD NATIONAL & STATE PARKS, USA No need to travel to a galaxy far, far away: head to northern California and take a stroll through the Forest Moon of Endor, why don’t you? The home of the Ewoks – where, of course, the Rebels took refuge in their tree houses – is actually in these dreamy groves. Loads to explore around here but if you’re pressed for time, take a drive down the Avenue of Giants highway. Oh, and Skywalker Ranch is a stone’s throw away further down the coast.
1. THE SOUND OF MUSIC SALZBURG, AUSTRIA Fans of the beloved 1965 musical have much to see in this picturesque city. Start with Mirabell Gardens and Palace: wander through the elaborate Italian Baroque-style palace gardens, famous for the mythology-themed statues, the Pegasus Fountain and, of course, the flight of steps from Do-Re-Mi. Leopoldskron Palace, southwest of town, is the location of the Villa Von Trapp’s lakeside terrace. Now a boutique hotel, staying here is the only way to catch a glimpse of the Venetian ballroom. The Von Trapp gazebo – immortalised in Leisl and Rolf’s tune of young love, Sixteen Going on Seventeen – was originally here before moving to a better location for visitors at Hellbrunn Palace.
2. LAWRENCE OF ARABIA WADI RUM, JORDAN Wadi Rum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is probably best known for its connection with the enigmatic British officer T.E. Lawrence. Much of David Lean's movie on his exploits, Lawrence of Arabia, was actually filmed in Wadi Rum in the 1960s. And what a setting: wide open spaces and windsculpted rock formations that change hue throughout the day to cast a glow over the Arabian desert. Ride a camel, embark on a 4WD adventure with a Bedouin driver, sleep under the stars in comfort and soak in the vast silence – it’s an enchanting desert experience.
4. HARRY POTTER & THE PHILOSOPHER’S STONE & HARRY POTTER & THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS ALNWICK CASTLE, ENGLAND England’s second-largest inhabited castle moonlighted as the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the first two Harry Potter films. These days, muggles can visit the staterooms and gardens at Alnwick Castle. Imagine yourself on the way to Hagrid's Hut on the edge of the Forbidden Forest, and make all your Quidditch dreams come true by taking broomstick training sessions in the Outer Bailey, on the very spot where Harry learned the rules of this wizarding sport. You’ll be capturing the golden snitch in no time!
5. THE BEACH MAYA BAY, THAILAND In Thailand’s Ko Phi Phi Le islands, you’ll find a pristine turquoise-hued bay, sheltered by dramatic 100-metre-high cliffs on three sides and white-sand beach. This dreamy setting was the star of the 2000 film based on the novel by Alex Garland that tells the tale of young backpackers living in a secluded, hidden lagoon. In 2018 the site was closed to give the coral reefs and sea life a chance to regenerate and it’s only recently re-opened, with visitor caps in place to safeguard this protected natural area. RETURNED TRAVELLERS | SRI LANKA
A VISIT TO... SRI LANKA We caught up with Ron and Diane following their trip to Sri Lanka in January — our first international departure since 2020 What prompted you to tour Sri Lanka, has it been on your bucket list for a while? This country was not on our bucket list initially, but with the cancellation of a number of our planned holidays due to COVID-19 our research for alternatives led us to Sri Lanka. Having visited and enjoyed the timeless history of a number of World Heritage sites in other countries such as Cambodia, we were drawn to Sri Lanka and its eight World Heritage sites. We were also keen on the safari that the tour offered. Our research on the hotels also reinforced our view that this would be a great holiday. Did your expectations of Sri Lanka meet reality? Our expectations were exceeded – every day was an adventure, the people were very friendly, all the hotels were great, the food was also excellent, whether you preferred to eat western or Sri Lankan. The wildlife safaris were surprising, providing close encounters with many elephants and sightings of a large variety of animals and birds. Incidental costs at the hotels for drinks, laundry and the like, was also very cheap. What were the highlights of this tour for you? Highlights for us on this tour were the wildlife safaris at Yala National Park. Observing the use of all parts of a coconut including seeing rope being made. The Sigiriya Rock Fortress and the Temple of the Tooth were also highlights. All of the hotels, but in particular, the Amari Hotel in Galle, the Grand Hotel in Nuwara Eliya, the Earl’s Regency in Kandy, and the Sigiriya Jungles hotel. Meals were mostly buffets and were excellent, in particular the fruit. The buffalo curd and treacle with fruit for breakfast was delicious. Coconut water and flesh from the roadside stalls was a treat, too. What do you say to those pondering whether or not to book a Sri Lanka tour? Both Diane and I have travelled widely around the world and believe that Sri Lanka is well worth a visit. It offers so much more than you expect, you will not be disappointed. This holiday truly provides value for money, most meals are included and you don’t need to spend much money on incidentals. All hotels and restaurants were COVID safe and PCR testing prior to returning to Australia was a breeze. Well done Inspiring Vacations – the 14 Day Ultimate Sri Lanka tour was indeed a very inspiring holiday! FROM TOP: Sigiriya Jungles Hotel; Amari Galle Hotel; Ron and Diane with offerings to Buddha at the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy; Ron and Diane at Sigiriya Rock Fortress; Yala National Park; Ron and Diane drinking tea at the Damro Tea Plantation and Factory in Nuwara Eliya

VANCOUVER Canada’s west coast gem packs a real punch. Here’s our guide to experiencing the best of the city in two days

WORDS BY KRISTY HOSKING
12 INSPIRING VACATIONS MAGAZINE | MARCH/APRIL 2022
WEEKENDER | VANCOUVER
A
visit to British Columbia means you’ll be close to nature, even in the city. Vancouver’s beauty will leave you in awe. But it’s not all about the mountain and ocean views – of which there are plenty.
DAY 1
11am Make the most of the views and fresh air and hightail it to the Seawall for a mid-morning walk or cycle. The Vancouver Seawall is a part of the 28-km Seaside Greenway, the world’s longest continuous waterfront path, and skirts the edge of leafy green Stanley Park. Sit under one of the park’s 400-year-old trees for a breather.
1pm Traversing the city centre is easy and best done on foot or via public transport. After you’ve stretched your legs follow the Seawall southwards to English Bay Beach – and have a dip if you dare! Hop on the False Creek Ferry across to Granville Island and don’t stop walking until you find the Granville Island Public Market. This is the place to settle your hunger; choose from Vietnamese-inspired vegan fare, fresh fish and chips, Japanese, burgers, and more.
PHOTO: XXXXXXX XXXXXXXX
3pm After immersing yourself in the market’s food scene, take a WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO short walk to Granville Island VISIT CANADA? Brewing – one of the city’s PR E S S PL AY many micro-breweries – for PR E S S PL AY a daily tour and tasting (tour times change seasonally). Continue the craft beer crawl through the city to discover why all the fuss over Vancouver’s micro brewery scene – be sure to try 33 Acres Brewing Company and Yaletown Brewing Company. Add in a spot of shopping along the way and some sightseeing, taking your time to soak it all in.
6pm Keep the good vibes alive and head to Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhood, the humming Gastown district. When you’re surrounded by as much water as you are in Vancouver, it’s hard to go past seafood for dinner. Head to Water Street Cafe, a Vancouver landmark in a historic Gastown cornerstone across from the famous steam clock.

DAY 2
INSPIRED TO VISIT VANCOUVER? Check out our tours here
9pm Given its prohibition past, unsurprisingly there are plenty of speakeasies and hidden bars in the Gastown area and makes for the perfect end to the day. The newest (hidden) bar on the scene is Chupito (check out their Instagram for hours and location). Tucked away down an alley, the bar is becoming known for its cocktails and authentic Mexican. Key Party is a Main Street hotspot. Don’t be fooled by the accounting office at the front – it’s (quite literally) a party at the back.
10am Treat yourself to a Mexican-inspired brunch at Bandidas Taqueria on Commercial Drive, then have a browse among the bookshops and bohemian shopping the area serves up. 12pm If you’re up for it, and love city attractions, hop on the free shuttle from various Downtown pick up points (there are also public transport options) to walk the Capilano Suspension Bridge on the North Shore. The bridge looms high above the Capilano River, deep in the thick of Canada’s wilderness.

7pm Settle in at Rogers Arena, home of the beloved Vancouver Canucks and just an easy ten minute walk from Gastown. If you’re travelling during ice hockey season (October to April), the atmosphere at home games is exhilarating. In the warmer months, catch a game of Canada’s national summer sport – lacrosse. If sport isn’t your thing, don’t despair: Rogers Arena also plays hosts to some of the biggest concerts and shows in the city.
8am Set out early to explore the city that is constantly ranked as one of the world’s best. Make your way to Commercial Drive, one of Vancouver’s trendiest neighbourhoods, where a colourful explosion of street art, charming cafes and Vancouver’s very own Little Italy awaits. You can always head back to Stanley Park for a better look at this urban oasis: stop and smell the roses at the Stanley Park Rose Garden located within the park. There are always people walking, cycling or rollerblading along the scenic seawall, enjoying the views of the city, ocean, mountains and Lions Gate Bridge.

2pm Grouse Mountain is just 15 minutes from downtown and one of Vancouver's premier attractions. Whether you’re visiting in summer or winter, there are year-round activities to suit. Hop on the Skyride to get to the top, or hike up Grouse Grind. During summer, chairlifts take you higher up the mountain for panoramic views of Vancouver (don’t forget your camera). Of course in winter, it’s all about snow play on the mountain. There are 33 ski and snowboarding runs catering for various abilities. You can easily spend the rest of the day here if you wish. Beyond the physical activities, there’s a popular Lumberjack Show every day in summer, disc golf, Theatre in the Sky is open year round, and more.
7pm Vancouver is an exciting foodie destination, whether it’s for fine dining, buzzing Granville Island market, or a bite of a famous Japadog, a small chain of street food stands selling Japaneseinspired hot dogs. If you head to Main Street, you’ll be pleased to find a slew of decent eateries at your whim and fancy coffee on par with some of the best in the world. For dinner, join the LOVE CANADA? ondi Beach is one of the most famous beaches in the world for good reason: glistening blue ocean, a vibrant village atmosphere and unique eateries overlooking the iconic coastline. Here’s where to eat, stay and play at one of Australia’s bucket list destinations.
Start the day right There is no shortage of wholesome cafés in Bondi and the suburb has garnered a reputation for its wellness vibe. In the morning, locals flock to Porch and Parlour for coffee and a bite to eat before their morning swim, while others pick up a superfood smoothie or tuck into an acai bowl from Cali Press on Hall Street. For those with a sweet tooth, head to Gelato Messina for a super-creamy gelato (or go on the hunt for their van at Bondi during the summer). And in the evening, Eden serves up innovative, plant-based dishes within a beautiful courtyard near the entrance of QT Bondi. The food is almost too pretty to eat: expect botanical cocktails and colourful sliders, poke bowls and pasta, all brimming with plant-based goodness. Visiting on the weekend? Be sure to check out the Bondi Farmers Market, held each Saturday morning from 9am to 1pm on the grounds of Bondi Beach Public School on Campbell Parade, at the northern end of the beach. Here, meet local farmers, stock up on organic produce and handmade gifts and enjoy a feast of globallyinspired morsels.

Get active Start the day saluting the sun with a yoga class beachside. The experienced instructors at Yoga by the Sea run classes at the southern pocket of Bondi Beach. Join locals and visitors for Bondi Power Yoga of flowing Vinyasa, or the more mellow Relax Yoga class that combines Hatha, Satyananda and Iyengar styles with meditation. One of the best ways to soak up the salty air and ocean views is on the 6km Bondi to Coogee coastal walk. On this clifftop trail you’ll walk over sandstone cliffs, past Tamarama beach — known locally as ‘Glamarama’ — and multi-million dollar beachside homes. Take a selfie in front of the retro Tamarama Surf Club and have a coffee at Bronte’s Bogey Hole Cafe, named after Bronte’s rockpool. Pack a towel: there are plenty of swimming spots along the way. A dip in the Bondi Icebergs ocean pool is a must – previously the Bondi Baths, this stunning facility hosts one of the world’s most photographed swimming pools. Open year round with a proud winter swimming club, there’s also a smaller kids pool and a sauna. Those looking to catch a wave can join a twohour surf lesson with Let's Go Surfing. Choose from private or group lessons with experienced surfing instructors, who will run you through the basics of paddling, catching waves and standing. Refuel at Speedos Café, on the northern end of the beach, with its Instagrammable menu and scenic backdrop. INSPIRINGVACATIONS.COM 19
Relax and unwind
Commanding one of the best panoramas over the beach, North Bondi Fish is a lovely spot for a long lunch in the sunshine. Indulge in a selection of Australian seafood. Afterwards head to Bondi Beach Public Bar, for a relaxing drink at a prime people viewing spot. Sean’s Bondi is a must-do dining experience in Sydney, with a lively location on Bondi’s main strip and a focus on local produce. The menu changes daily depending on the catch of the day, as well as the harvest from owner Sean Moran’s Bilpin farm. Striped linen tablecloths, pendant lights and coastal bric-a-brac all add to the memorable experience. For something a little more casual, head up Bondi Road to Totti’s for good wine, wood-fired bread with antipasti and platters of pasta. Snare a spot in the courtyard under the olive trees among fragrant rosemary and order the celebrated dessert: Neapolitan ice-cream sandwich. Back on the beachfront, Hotel Ravesis is a great spot for sun-kissed cocktails. This well-known bar features a stunning upper floor terrace, casual dining space and a plush late-night supper club. It also offers boutique accommodation upstairs, with Palm Springs-inspired interiors and uninterrupted ocean views.
Listen to the sound of the surf as you enjoy a relaxing massage at The Body Spot, inside Bondi Icebergs. The massage rooms are located poolside and you can choose from hot stone massages, dry brushing and more. Alternatively, walk up Bondi Road to experience the unique infrared sauna at Nimbus Co. The deeply therapeutic sauna uses infrared heating panels to emit light to help your body sweat out toxins. As the radiated heat penetrates your muscles you can meditate, do gentle stretching or even listen to a wellness podcast – emerge feeling rejuvenated and relaxed.

COVER STORY | ANTARCTICA
Long known as the last frontier on Earth, Antarctica is wilderness at its most raw and beautiful and today, it’s more accessible than ever. Navigate the Drake Passage, spot penguins and follow in the footsteps of the world’s great explorers as you journey across glaciers and ice sheets.
The frozen continent is home to 90% of the world’s ice, a baffling landscape and extraordinary wildlife. The waters around the Antarctic are protected (the Ross Sea is now the world’s largest protected marine area) meaning that the penguins, seals and whales that inhabit the area can hunt, play – and entertain visitors – undisturbed. For most, Antarctica is a once-in-a-lifetime journey. It is one of the most remote places in the world, making it an alluring destination for intrepid travellers. The best way to get there is by expedition ship, and the best time to see Antarctica is, of course, now: since the early 1990s, Antarctica has lost roughly three trillion tons of ice, and it’s estimated Antarctica’s ice could reach a melting tipping point by mid-century. They say you have to ‘earn’ the Antarctic, and while the trip may not be easy, after spotting your first iceberg or pod of orca whales, you’ll agree that the journey was completely worthwhile. The great white continent is a land of wonder and unlike anywhere else on the planet. Here, we answer all your questions about cruising Antarctica.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT ANTARCTICA?
What’s expedition cruising?
Expedition ships are equipped with customfeatures to suit the conditions they face, such as PL AY stabilisers and ice-breakers. These vessels are designed to go where larger ships cannot, affording the chance to get up close with local wildlife, board a zodiac boat to access the most remote parts of the planet, and learn from experts in the fields of science and sustainability. On an expedition cruise, the destination is the main event, so while leisure facilities may be limited by the size of the ship, the profound experiences they enable are unforgettable.
PR E S S PL AY PRESS
How do I get there? The Argentinean city of Ushuaia – the most southerly city in the world – is the starting spot for most cruises. The ship will then head south towards the white continent past Cape Horn on the southern tip of Chile and through the stormy Drake Passage. Ahead is the Southern Shetland Isles and beyond that is the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula.
PHOTO: XXXXXXX XXXXXXXX
Will I get seasick? Known for its unpredictable nature, the Drake Passage commonly presents visitors with two conditions: glass-like seas dubbed the ‘Drake Lake,’ or colossal waves called the ‘Drake Shake.’ No matter which version you encounter, it’s bound to be unforgettable once you’ve reached your destination. Scientifically, there are several reasons for the passage’s ferocity. It’s where the Atlantic, Pacific and Southern seas all converge and as there is no other landmass on the same latitude, the water flows freely. These factors, in addition to the area's frequent high winds, can make for a rough journey. Pack plenty of seasickness meds, skip the wine at dinner and spend your sea days horizontal; you’ll reach the calm Antarctic Peninsula without too much hassle. MAIN: Adelie penguins and aquamarine water, Antarctica INSPIRINGVACATIONS.COM 23
What can I do onboard? Although shore excursions are one of the most exciting elements of an expedition cruise, there are many other activities to keep passengers entertained. When not on a land excursion, there’s the option to board a tender and cruise around sights of interest with a guide. On board, there’s a gym, wellness centre and hot tub, as well as numerous lectures and activities hosted in the science centre by expert crew members. The onboard educational program supports the encounters with a range of topics related to the landscape and wildlife. The topics are tailor made according to the region, given by experts in that particular field. In case of noteworthy encounters during the day, these events are summed up with a recap, explaining what guests have seen and why it was special. Those looking for a bit of extra adventure can purchase optional activities, such as Antarctic kayaking or hiking. It’s best to pre-book to avoid disappointment as numbers are limited, but you can book while on board.

These days, there are few places in the world without internet access and Antarctica is not one of them. For a fee, you can log onto the internet in public areas around the boat, while emergency phone calls can be made via the ship’s satellite phones. Just remember, this is the most remote place on the planet; factors like weather conditions can affect connectivity. Use your time at sea wisely and avoid the internet where possible – news and social media will all be waiting for you at home, but the wildlife won’t be.

COVER STORY | ANTARCTICA
Everything you need to know about the MS Fridtjof Nansen How environmentally friendly is the MS Fridtjof Nansen? The MS Fridtjof Nansen is one of two revolutionary new hybrid additions to the Hurtigruten fleet. Nansen and its sister ship the MS Roald Amundsen both utilise electric propulsion. This state-of-the-art technology, coupled with its advanced construction is expected to cut fuel consumption and CO2emissions by 20%. Hybrid technology will also enable periods of silent cruising, immersing passengers in their Antarctic surrounds and allowing them to hear distant animal songs or icebergs as they shatter into the ocean. What are the cabins like on board the MS Fridtjof Nansen? Unlike many other ships, the MS Fridtjof Nansen does not have any inside cabins, meaning every room has either a balcony or large window. The standard cabins are classified as ‘polar outside’ and are primarily situated on the lower and middle decks; these are bright, comfortable rooms, fitted with a television and ensuite. Arctic superior cabins and suites are available as upgrades for an additional cost. Can I learn about the destination on board? At the heart of any Antarctic expedition cruise are the lectures that educate guests on the intricacies of the icy ecosystem, its history and the animals that call it home. The MS Fridtjof Nansen’s edutainment venue, the Nansen Science Centre, hosts daily presentations with their expert crew; times are set in advance, so passengers can plan their days on board. People can also do their own research in the resource library or experiment in the photo lab.
PHOTO: XXXXXXX XXXXXXXX
How safe is the MS Fridtjof Nansen? The ship is equipped with extensive safety features and procedures to comply with international maritime law. In addition, Hurtigruten is a member of the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO) and follows regulations set by Antarctica’s governing body, the IAATO. The vessel itself has lifeboats to accommodate all passengers, a double hull for strength and a Polar Class of 6 (1A+), making it an ice-strengthened expedition ship capable of tackling demanding conditions. On board, passengers will be briefed on safety procedures (as is required by maritime law) and are encouraged to approach the expert crew with any questions. How will the size of the MS Fridtjof Nansen impact the Antarctic Expedition? While people may look to smaller expedition ships for their Antarctic expedition, travelling on a larger, yet environmentally conscious ship has many advantages. As well as increased levels of comfort and facilities unmatched by compact vessels, the MS Fridtjof Nansen has been specially designed for efficiency. Its purposebuilt tender pit, for example, enables passengers to board inflatable tender boats quickly and easily, and ensures guests can embark on regular shore excursions. These features and many others ensure the size of the ship isn’t a hindrance to expeditioners. What are the drinking and dining options on board the MS Fridtjof Nansen? There are three restaurants offering a wide selection of dining options. Menus in each restaurant are inspired by traditional Nordic fare, as well as popular international dishes, ensuring options to suit all travellers. Aune, the main restaurant, is open throughout the day to allow flexible dining around shore excursions and other activities. There’s also the Fredheim – described as an ‘informal international meeting place’ – and a fine-dining restaurant named Lindstrøm, which offers refined Norwegian-style cuisine. Unlike the other two, Lindstrøm must be booked in advance and dishes at are paid for on an a la carte basis (with the exception of suite guests). A selection of beer, wine and soft drinks will be available with meals for no additional cost, while coffee and tea are also complementary throughout each day of the Antarctic expedition.

SHORE THING
Shore excursions are the highlights of any expedition cruise – here's what you need to know Damian Perry, managing director of the Asia-Pacific Region for Hurtigruten, gives us the rundown on shore excursions and what you need to know. What is a shore excursion? Shore excursions in Antarctica are your opportunity to get up close with the icy landscape and animals that call it home. Exploring on foot is the best way to observe penguins and other creatures up close in their natural environment. Prior to embarking on a land excursion, Perry says passengers are briefed on the landing process and what to expect, as well as where to walk and not walk. During these landings, expedition crew are always available to offer assistance and expertise. They guide groups around the sites in search of animals, ice formations or other points of interest, share information and ensure everyone is okay. How do I get from ship to shore? The transition from ship to shore runs like clockwork. Upon check-in, travellers are allocated to groups of around 20, depending on the number of people on board, before collecting a badge and equipment for use throughout the trip. The night before each shore excursion, a briefing is held to determine landing times and groups are given an estimated departure for the following day so they can prepare. This information is displayed around the ship and announcements are made every morning alerting passengers to weather conditions or any delays. Purpose-built inflatable tenders (boats) are used to transport passengers and crew to land. “The tender boats are constantly rotating,” Perry says. “We operate around 18 boats, so while five groups may be landing in Antarctica, [others] may be cruising, or doing activities such as kayaking.” When it’s their time, groups are called to the tender pit – where passengers board the tenders – over the speaker and the following group is instructed to get ready. What will I see during our shore excursions? Several factors influence what you will see on Antarctic shore excursions. Certain animals are more active in some months, and weather fluctuates throughout. November’s colder temperatures create pristine conditions. Migratory animals start arriving back to Antarctic waters, the land remains untrampled by visitors and ice formations are still intact. Towards the end of the month, penguins start to mate and lay eggs. As the summer progresses, daylight stretches to almost 20 hours. Late January and early February see many penguin chicks hatch and seal pups born on the pack ice, and whale sightings are more common, too. Another aspect that differs is the landing sites. Some are home to scientific facilities and old whaling stations, while others are barren and icy. Then, of course, there’s luck. All of these elements impact what you will see on a shore excursion, but rest assured that the crew will facilitate the best possible experience. How many shore excursions will I get to do? Antarctica is a wild place; conditions can turn from serene to windy in a flash. On average, people will experience one landing per day while in the Antarctic Peninsula, but if the weather permits, two may be possible. As safety is the primary concern, weather conditions dictate the daily schedule and programs will be shifted to suit them. In addition, Hurtigruten abides by rules set by IAATO – the body dedicated to regulating Antarctic tourism and environmental impact – and only allows 100 people on shore per site at one time. Ultimately, Perry says, expedition crew are passionate explorers themselves and are always looking to get people off the boat and on shore to truly experience the destination. W
ith warm, clear waters teeming with marine life, rusting shipwrecks and coral pinnacles and drop offs galore – it’s no wonder the world’s largest coral reef system is teeming with incredible dive spots. Take the plunge and discover some of Queensland’s top diving spots, moving from the iconic Great Barrier Reef’s northernmost tip to the rich megafauna in the south.
COD HOLE Made famous by internationally-recognised underwater photographers Ron and Valerie Taylor, Cod Hole is a renowned haven for friendly, giant potato cod (weighing between six and 100kg, growing up to two metres long) and giant Maori wrasse. Drop to the sandy floor area between the bommies, and enjoy the spectacle of tropical fish feeding above. The site is accessed by liveaboard dive tours leaving from Cairns or Port Douglas, or day excursions from Lizard Island.
PIXIE PINNACLE & THE RIBBON REEFS A 20km 'string' of 10 individual coral reefs, collectively called the Ribbon Reefs, extend from Cooktown to the eastern Torres Strait. They form along the edge of the continental shelf and, in some places, the outer edge is so suitable for coral growth, that the reefs grow high and form narrow walls. One of the sites often visited is the very colourful Pixie Pinnacle, a 15-metre-wide column of coral which rises from a depth of 40 metres to the surface. During June and July, dwarf minke whales are spotted on this remote section of reef.
AGINCOURT REEF Off Port Douglas on the Great Barrier Reef, Agincourt Reef is a series of smaller reefs with around 20 different dive sites. This clear water provides excellent underwater INSPIRED visibility and The Channels offer TO VISIT QLD? Check out our interesting swim-throughs and caves, tours here while The Gardens are renowned for their exceptional abundance of brightlycoloured reef fish. Blue Wonder is a breathtaking wall dive to beyond 40 metres, while Nursery Bommie is a spectacular pinnacle where pelagic fish gather to feed. INSPIRINGVACATIONS.COM 31
OSPREY REEF Osprey Reef is one of the most spectacular dive sites in the world, located in the Coral Sea Marine Park nearly 350km away from Cairns and only accessed via a liveaboard. The North Horn site on the reef is a remote seamount rising 1000 metres from the ocean floor offering spectacular wall drop-offs, amazing visibility and a legendary shark-feeding location. Whitetip sharks and grey whalers cruise off the wall while hammerheads and oceanic silvertips swim in from deep water to check out the action. The northernmost point attracts reef fish and pelagic species including barracuda, dogtooth tuna and mackerel.
WHEELER REEF Off the coast of Townsville, you'll find Wheeler Reef – a platform reef perched close to the continental shelf drop off. Perfectly circular in shape, this magnificent example of marine biodiversity offers spectacular formations of plate, branching and soft corals in brilliant colours teeming with tropical life. Rated as one of the best night dives on the reef, you’ll find moray eels, epaulette and whitetip sharks, bull rays, as well as a myriad of shrimps and other crustaceans waiting to be discovered by divers who like the dark!
SS YONGALA WRECK More than one hundred years after sinking off the coast of Townsville, the SS Yongala is now one of the world's top wreck dives and one of Australia's best dive sites, thanks to the sheer proliferation of marine life in, on and around the 100-metrelong wreck. Here, giant Queensland gropers hang beneath the stern while schools of trevally and cobia congregate around the depths of the wreck.
BAIT REEF Bait Reef is one of the most pristine diving locations on the outer Great Barrier Reef. With a depth of between four to 18 metres and visibility of 10 to 20 metres, the well-protected Gary's Lagoon is an ideal site for snorkellers and beginner divers. Coral gardens, underwater canyons, swim throughs and dramatic walls provide a range of interesting underwater terrain to explore. This site is also easily accessible from either Airlie Beach (mainland) or Hamilton Island.
HARDY REEF The nearest cluster of reefs to the Whitsunday Islands, Hardy Reef (home to the celebrated Heart Reef) is a 42 square km 'patch reef' offering a shallow lagoon separated from surrounding reefs by a deep channel of water up to 60 metres deep, ideal for wall dives. Here, divers can expect to see a large variety of soft and hard corals and many species of 'people friendly' fish, including George the Giant Queensland Grouper, a curious resident since the 1990s estimated to be around three metres long. The Reefworld pontoon is located here, with guided diving, snorkelling and overnight stays available. 32 INSPIRING VACATIONS MAGAZINE | MARCH/APRIL 2022

HERON ISLAND Easily accessed from Gladstone, Heron Island is a true coral cay where you can step off the island to fantastic coral gardens and pinnacles, just minutes from the beach. The diving is so good that Jacques Cousteau listed the Heron Bommie as one of his top 10 favourite dive sites in the world. Both Heron and Lady Musgrave Islands offer world-class diving and are just two of the places in the Southern Great Barrier Reef where you can spot the 'Great Eight' marine creatures: clownfish, giant clams, manta rays, Maori wrasse, potato cod, sharks, turtles and whales.
LADY ELLIOT ISLAND The Southern Great Barrier Reef is known for its megafauna and Lady Elliot Island doesn't disappoint. Known as the home of manta rays, this coral cay – situated within a highly protected Green Zone – attracts divers from around the world for its diversity, quantity and size of the marine animals. Visibility is over 20 metres for much of the year and encounters with green, hawksbill and loggerhead turtles are a daily occurrence. The Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) recently named Lady Elliot as one of the top five locations in the world to dive with Manta Rays.

EX-HMAS BRISBANE (SUNSHINE COAST) While it's too far south to be considered the Great Barrier Reef, we couldn't leave this one out. Queensland's newest shipwreck – exHMAS Brisbane – located off Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast, is an ex-royal Australian Navy destroyer that served in the Vietnam and Gulf wars before being sunk in July 2005. Kept in its original condition (where possible), the grand vessel (133 metres long) is a flourishing marine habitat, sitting upright on the ocean floor, 28 metres below sea level. Now serving as an artificial reef, only certified divers can access this site through a licensed dive tour operator.

Q &A NAME JOSH MCKIE
OCCUPATION OPERATIONS SPECIALIST CITY MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA
Red Square, Moscow
What would you be doing, career-wise, if you weren’t working in travel? Working long hours in a less exciting job to be able to afford the trips I want to do in my spare time! Where are you off to this year? This year I have some catching up to do! I need to visit family and friends in Sydney, Gold Coast and Dunedin, and I am also the best man for my school friend's wedding in Pisek, Czech Republic, later in the year. Outside of the trips I need to do to reunite with my nearest and dearest, I would like to tick Iceland off my bucket list as soon as possible.
What’s the most spontaneous trip you’ve ever taken? I once flew to Cancun, Mexico for a weekend! It was a whirlwind work trip. In terms of leisure travel, I once went to the airport and purchased the next reasonably priced ticket to somewhere in Australia. Mackay is lovely in winter! What’s your best travel tip? Try to read a book about the country or city you're visiting, it draws you into the culture, history and vibe so much more. On my last trip to Russia, I read A Gentleman in Moscow and visited the Hotel Metropol the day I finished the book, such a surreal experience walking through the lobby of a place I'd imagined in my head. What – and where – was your most memorable meal? I enjoy food, but I wouldn't say I travel for this reason, so my culinary adventures aren't too exciting. I fondly remember having my first chilli mud crab in Singapore as well as a Yorkshire pudding the size of my head, coated in the most glorious gravy, in the Lakes District of the UK.

Do you speak any other languages? Unfortunately, I didn't see the value in learning another language as a child, so I only speak English (there's time to change that though!). I am adaptable, however, for example, I quickly learned how to order the perfect coffee in the Czech Republic, and as an eight year old I was charged with arranging dinner (under supervision) for my family in Rome, the term "cinque pizza!" is a memorable family saying.
