Sculptor (Academy of Fine Arts, Ljubljana), visual artist and puppeteer works in a field of contemporary art: drawing, instalation, performing and artist books. Primarily interested in humour, which he uses to point out neuralgic points in our everyday life and global trends, he often applies theoretical concepts of contemporary philosophers in a field of visual art. Sometimes he uses traditional sculpturing materials in a nontraditional way (chopping the tree to pieces and reconstructing a new tree) or he uses nonconventional material in conventional form (the sculpture of an artist’s body with pig’s head, moulded in lard). Description of his work could be conceptual as far ideas are developed from importance of marginal concepts and things that tend to be out of focus.
Main medai he uses in his works are drawingm peformance and instalation. Besides drawings and instalations he also employs various means for different purposes: video, animation, nanotechnology and other forms of new media. His work was exhibited in 14 solo and 32 group exhibitions in Slovenia.

Ceci n’est pas un croquis Ceci n’est pas un croquis is exhibition project where focus was on media of drawings / sketches.

Drawings from that exhibition was collected from the period of three years and presented works that were then yet not exhibited. Exhibition was divided in three segments: street performance drawing was video documented and presented on exhibition, exhibition of drawings and printed book of drawings. Tomislav Vrečar: Opazujem prijatelja, kako zjutraj z mačkom se igra is a big installation exhibition project with a special thematic focus on drawing. Drawing is used as a mean of artistic expression and as a preparation or planning phase. At this last topic drawing as a plan has evolved into a whole exhibition project with objects which were sawn from textile and later were installed into gallery space. A book of drawings was published with a title of an exhibition which served as a title for a book: Tomislav Vrečar is an actual Slovene poet who was participating in a project with his name and a part of his poem - with this name and title becomes illustration for the book .

Corpus Indeterminata is exhibition project of a broader artistic opus with a thematic focus on figure vs. body.

Through different reactions to words body of the Other feelings towards exhibiting artifacts can derive from sublime to uncanny. Through whole opus of Corpus Indeterminata artifacts exhibited in installations are going to be developed through a different engineered process. The first Coprus Indeterminata installation was made of frozen lard with freezing mechanism as construction.

The aesthetic function is therefore replaced by a documentary, an exploring one, we could say.
The artworks (sculptures, performances, objects, videos) from the cycle entitled Undefined Body are linked by the most – paradoxically for sculpturing – intangible: the idea, not yet entirely defined thought, invisible body, that is thought as hallowed, as repulsive, that is sloughing from the extraordinary into a conditionally attraction, through a multitude of various media, that the artist utilizes as his expression. This is no insistence at classical sculpturing or per formative ness as a fashionable trend; the means serve the idea, however, the primary fascination over the material and procedure (the cast lard with cracklings; almost invisible hairs, sublimely felted into a shirt) turned over from the artist to the spectator.
Had Duschamp turned/made a commodity into an artistic object and Gober’s urinals are models of public lavatories with no function and represent, as modelled objects the work of a sculptor, then Srdić Janežič is interested in the traces on the commodity that testify of cooled down absence, the body that once was but has gone, its excrement, »impurity«. Before we come to mention the fragility and diminishing, let us mention that added to the work there is always a touch of humor, when we can suspect/sense that it’s a joke of a teasing artist.
The conception of an idea can be traced back to the enthusiasm over some small sculpture from the art museum in Frankfurt am Main from the beginning of the 19th century. A spiritual person holds – in a glass dish – a hair, probably a relic of a saint. When we mention the locks of Elvis Presley’s hair, or a lock of lover’s hair soldiers used to keep, we come close to the notion of fetishism. Fetishes are, amongst other things aesthetic-used objects and photography has, with its distance towards the object a suitable medium, instantly determining aesthetic view, hence the uneasiness when – in it – we recognize a hair from a urinal, the very same hair that is – next to the photograph – also exhibited, and of course picked from a public urinal – »with no filter«.

A human figure with a pig’s head made from lard and cracklings is cast after the body of the artist and the head of an anonymous pig from a pig farm, while the series should – in its continuation – contain a smaller figure of a pig with the head of the artist made from the artist’s fat (generated by z liposuction). In the latter case there is far less material available. The body’s mould will be made according the 3D scan of a pig and the artist’s head. Srdić Janežič is obviously avoiding expressiveness that is inevitably being imposed on us in the case of modelled sculptures. He does not care for the feeling, but the transmission of the real form; the mould here literally representing the space of the missing body, the method becoming expertise; it could have been serial as what the artist is interested in is the perception of the whole, i.e. The material – lard and human fat – amalgamated with the form and all the connotations it brings along: animal farms

and food industry, beauty surgery and its »remnants«, food transformed into an artifact (here we can refer to the artist’s sculptures made from bread), the form of the body as its absence, animate-inanimate material. For some more sensual individuals (gourmands) the material of a human figure with a pig’s head represents something attractive (the subcutaneous fat was – in baroque, and not only then – considered aesthetic, even erotic), for many it may be repulsive, or just a joke. And where is the body after which the void, the sculpture, the hairs and the shirt remained? Is is a body of a stranger, rising disgust, or an artist that can be praised? It’s left many traces behind, but has yet slipped away; it is undefined, we can label it with various phantasms, we can make it sublime or horrifying, for the unheimliche, the »something«, that returns to us reshaped

Corpus Indeterminata 3D is based on formal focus of 3D scanning, designing and printing: to make 3D body of pig with artist's head. Development of a project is based on the development of existing techniques and space of 3D scanning. One part of the exhibition was installed on the outside gallery wall at the beginning of May in Maribor (Corpus Indeterminata 3D - under construction). Second installation will happen in the fall of July in Kranj. 34

Pointe a L’oeil - a drop into horizon is installation of 38 tables of Western philosophers from Antiquity to Postmodernism and today’s Biohumanism. Project was conceived by: Zoran Srdić Janežič and Jiri Kočica with the help of scientists from National Institute of Chemistry Slovenija.

The project’s aim is to connect artistic, scientific and philosophical ways of thinking and open questions: How do we see the perspective of philosophy and art? Where is the vanishing point of the postmodern multi-perspective? One of the last living, late-postmodern ‘thinkers’ is the Slovenian anti-humanist Slavoj Žižek, whose portrait in nanoscale is the last in the series of portraits made for this project. The portrait of Žižek is the smallest possible artwork if we use DNA as a ‘pencil’. and was in 100.000 copies put into artist's eye.

It is hard to describe the art form of Intelektualne kurbe. We could describe it as installation but also on site project, street art, performance. Intellectual Whores offers a humorous, dionysiac and socially critical view of the (under)use of intellectual potential of Slovene female (and male – often known as male prostitutes) intellectuals. The system provides proper education yet fails to provide proper employment.

Female intellectuals are seen as superfluous and unnecessary human resources, especially through the eyes of the economic crisis we are facing today. A quick look around Europe, however, reveals that all the states which are seen as cradles of the humanities have long understood the role of science and art in establishing a stable society and solid nation. Intellectual Whores is a chance for all female artists and scientists to make a little extra on the side. If only for an hour, the project will perhaps save them from translating, proofreading, textwriting, designing, web-editing or give them a chance to break free from serving as an underpaid assistant setdesigner, dramaturge, editor, coordinator or pop-news tabloid writer. And, who knows, the Whores might even set them free from unemployment. By occupying the position of an intellectual whore they will be able to offer their clients what they do best – a chat about their fields of expertise and interest. Christ, Kaiser, I’m a happily married man.” In a time when a member of the Christian party demands that the posters for the show Look, a Whore! not be shown at the same time as the posters of the party (or at any time, for that matter) and in a time when whores are seen as society’s biggest blemish, the project reminds us all that the basic human rights belong to prostitutes as well. In some EU countries a prostitute is a legal position of employment with corresponding social contributions. Society tends to forget the most obvious and far greater intellectual prostitution we are forced to deal with in order to survive.

Zoran Srdić Janežič Born on the 4th of September 1974 in Kranj, Slovenia. After formal education as a mechanical technician he continued his studies on Famul Stuart – School of Applied Arts. In 1998 he entered the Academy of Fine Arts where he graduated in the sculpture department in June 2004 at Prof. Srečo Dragan. Diploma work was dealing with the process of video editing as a manipulative element that influences the viewer’s perception of the images and also forces into certain opinion or even ideology. In his years of studying at the Academy of Fine Arts he was active as the organizer of the student exhibitions, housing lectures and excursions.

Since 2005 he is employed as a designer of puppets at Puppet Theater in Ljubljana. Influence of puppet technology and performative supplements are also noticed in his work as an artist. He is finishing his studies in MA in Philosophy and Theory of Visual Culture at Faculty of Humanities in Koper, Slovenia. For his main research he is dealing with the intersection of humor and the reflection of media violence. The main artists in research are Michael Haneke, Marcel Duchamp and Robert Gober. Since 2006 he has been co-organizing debates on contemporary art – Tea Parties for Contemporary Art. As a visual artist he is exhibiting in individual and group exhibitions. He has been living and working in Ljubljana.

AP: How can you define your own concept of work?

ZSJ: I work mainly in the field of concept art. I am particularly interested in the relationship between cost and value, value shifting, reflecting on violence and dealing with relatively peripheral perhaps obscene themes: perhaps this is my social sensitivity to ordinary people who deviate from social norms such as obesity. I am interested in the difference between the body by what society dictates as beautiful and the body behind this perfect image – what is the spectrum which make some person to feel of some disabilities, unfortunateness, uneducatedness, and ugliness. I’m always interested in the body as a sculptor, and physical materials such as grease and hair which could be defined as relic or dirt. In my work I am looking for the boundaries between the sublime and uncanny side of a sensation.

AP: Could therefore your research between subtlety and uncanny be classified into one of contemporary ideology? ZSJ: That would be the ideology of security vs. Human rights – if it is not an ideology, it certainly is a popular theme. There would also be the commandments of diversity and critical reflection of accepting differences. Difference, which is now popularizing in the level of abstraction, is in stark contrast to the concrete image of a commanding popular medium. Interview with Anja Podreka
