Development of Lake Chad - Current Situation and Possible Outcomes
Unveiling of the photo exhibition 60 solutions against climate change by Yann Arthus-Bertrand
The exhibition comprises 21 photos by Yann Arthus-Bertrand from his famous Earth from Above series and presents concrete initiatives in four sectors: cities, agriculture, energy transition and climate change adaptation. AFD and the GoodPlanet Foundation are using his images to highlight innovative and effective solutions combining the fight against climate change and economic development in AFD’s 71 agencies worldwide.
Presentation of the study by Mr. Jacques Lemoalle, from the French Research Institute for Development (IRD) followed by a panel discussion with high-level speakers representing both the Nigerian government and the civil society. The panelists will also answer questions from the audience.
The exhibition will be on view until Saturday 28 November 2015
The increased international interest in Lake Chad as a geographical symbol embodies certain nagging worries: is the Lake going to dry up? What consequences would this have for the environment and for the millions of people who depend on it? This expert group review addresses the need to clear up the confusion surrounding Lake Chad, as this misunderstanding is an obstacle to formulating development policies on its behalf.

MOVIES & DISCUSSION
Wednesday 25 November 2015 – 6:30pm
Thursday 26 November 2015 – 6:30pm
Il était une forêt (Once Upon a Forest)
India, Climate or Development, AFD, 2015, 18 mins, in English
by Luc Jacquet, France, documentary, 2013, 78 mins, in French with English subtitles
Oscar winner Luc Jacquet offers up a visually exquisite exploration of the world above and below the forest canopy. As well as gorgeous cinematography, Il était une forêt offers up a brief outline of the theories and findings of Hallé, a widely respected scientist who has authored a dozen books about plants. Many of them are illustrated with his own intricate drawings, which are on ample display throughout the movie, alongside dozens of animated sequences.
India is the 3rd largest emitter of greenhouse gases. 800 million people still live with less than $2 a day and 400 million people lack access to electricity. We must make development sustainable by financing renewable energy or clean transport projects.
Kenya, accompanying Nyokabi, AFD, 2015, 16 mins, in English In Kenya, climate change threatens daily life: water resources, food and more... To reconcile development and climate, AFD supports projects such as geothermics and securing water supply infrastructure in the region of Mombasa. After the screening the public will be invited to participate in a discussion on the Climate or Development topic. This session will be moderated by Mr. Adesoji Ademola, environmental project officer at the French Development Agency in Nigeria.
