EDITORIAL Dear friends of the Institut français du Nigéria, Back to work now at the Institut français! We are off to a great start with the first edition of the Institut français du Nigéria OPEN DAY on Saturday, September 17th. Take this opportunity to meet the team and ask all the questions you have always wanted to ask on our activities and missions. A whole day to know more about our available French classes, to visit our new library, its digital space and resources in French, to obtain information and advice on studies in France with Campus France, and to receive our next rich and diverse cultural programme. This quarter, the cultural programme will feature a series of debates, the second edition of the Franco-Japanese animated film festival and of the musical project Electronic Soundscapes, as well as a contemporary dance duo from Tunisia. Finally, for the great satisfaction of Abuja film lovers, our open-air cinema will start again at the end of the rainy season. For those who want to go further and prepare the life-long official French certificate, we have opened two three-months programmes of French classes. We hope to see you all again at the Institut français du Nigéria or at one of our ‘outdoor’ events! Aimed at expanding the scope of Nigerian music’s already booming scene, Electronic Soundscapes is a project focusing on electronic music, organised by the Institut français du Nigéria and Goethe-Institut Nigeria with support of the Franco-German cultural fund. Taking place both in Lagos and Abuja, it is a mutually-beneficial exchange for participants and the facilitators, which seeks to improve both artistic and technical skills of the participants. WORKSHOPS Facilitated by 3 internationally-renowned producers (DJ Afrologic, Nigeria, Jon Attend, France and Daniel Haaksman, Germany), the workshop will take place daily from October 9 to 14 simultaneously in Lagos and Abuja. Participants will be young Nigerian electronic music producers coming from all over the country.

CONCERTS On FRIDAY 14, both groups will give a concert in each city, involving the facilitators as well as local musicians, which will combine electronic sounds and acoustic Nigerian music. SÉRAPHINE

An evening of French and Nigerian artistic videos Soirée de vidéos d’artistes nigérians et français

Fiction, 2008, 2h06 Discussion with environmental artist Ifesinachi Nwanyanwu Though being a housekeeper, in her off-hours Séraphine turned to natural elements of the outdoor world, with which she felt a tremendous degree of emotional and spiritual communion. Séraphine channeled these undying passions through painting. Her life took a fantastic turn when Wilhelm Uhde, a German art critic, laid eyes on the young woman’s creations for the first time.

The Video Art Network of Lagos presents a selection of some of these videos as well as videos from Nigerian artists. AS I OPEN MY EYES - À PEINE J’OUVRE LES YEUX

Fiction, 2015

Fiction, 2014, 1h42

WINNER OF THE AUDIENCE AWARD AT THE 2016 NOLLYWOOD WEEK IN PARIS

Linked with the Quarterly Talk “New shapes of feminism” (see p.8), and the two dance shows performed by Tunisian dancers (see p.14), As I open my Eyes raises the issue of the role of women in contemporary Tunisian society. Tunis, summer 2010, a few months before the Revolution: Farah, 18 years-old, has just graduated and her family sees her as a future doctor. But she doesn’t think the same way. She sings in a political band, has a passion for life, discovers love and her city by night against the will of her mother who knows Tunisia and its dangers too well.

In a classic Cinderella like story, a prostitute, Michelle, is stuck in a world she can not escape from. Her hope that one day a Prince Charming would rescue her from it all, seems lost. A heir to an empire, Kenechi, is transformed into a child by an overly ambitious uncle who wants the empire to himself.

FLASHBACK IN PICTURES RETOUR EN IMAGES

TWO DANCE SOLOS FROM TUNISIA African tour organised by the Institut français Paris Information on www.institutfrancais-nigeria.com

M.A.K.T.O.U.B SOLO DANCE PERFORMANCE The life of an artist always seems simple, but if you look deep inside, it becomes more complex. So many different paths to follow. How do we choose? By keeping in mind the starting point. Choisir ?

NITT 100 LIMITES SOLO DANCE PERFORMANCE Oumaïma Manaï runs, dances, runs away to seek freedom and break her chains… Her movements reveal both the beauty and the strength of the female body. This solo piece questions the role of women in contemporary Tunisian society, particularly after the recent political changes that have affected the country.
