Missing out on some issues of InTallaght Magazine? Not any more....the lads at Genesis Media the parent company of InTallaght Magazine have come up with a new way to ensure you get your copy hot off the press without having to leave your home. “We have been receiving a lot of phone calls in recent weeks with people asking if we could post a copy of the magazine to them which we have been doing up until now. The magazine seems to be highly anticipated and some people have expressed their disappointment at missing an edition due to not passing our distribution points or not being at the locations when we hand them out.” - Says Duncan, Genesis Media Advertising Manager. “We believe that door to door is not the answer as we want the magazine to go to the people who are genuinely interested in receiving it. As you can imagine a lot a time and money goes into producing each edition and to have it thrown away as soon as it hits the floor like most rag mags and free papers is not what we want. To over come this we are compiling a list of people who want it delivered to them, a very small annual fee for postage and packaging is what we believe is the best way to manage this dilemma” - Says Edward, Genesis Media Managing Director. InTallaght Magazine is growing from strength to strength, the lads are planning an additional 16 pages for next month’s edition and all editions going forward and are already in works on their second magazine in a different area also due in August. Additionally, their 4th Edition of Tallaght Directory is due to hit your door mat very soon. It promises to be more comprehensive and useful. The lads also plan to release a Digital iPad Version of InTallaght with the release of Apple’s new iOS due at the same time as Apple’s iCloud. Watch this space for more details.....

Amidst the euphoric haze of Oxegen 2007, in a muddy field in Punchestown, three young Dublin musicians decided to form a band. All hailing from the Dublin suburb of Tallaght, supersonic warbler Shane O'Reilly was joined by laid back bassist Joe Leech and drumming dynamo Callum Mc Adam. And so Bipolar Empire was born. Their stylistic folk infused rock'n'roll, delivered with genuine raw passion and boundless energy, began to draw the attention of young music fans and as the live shows developed into a tighter, more intense experience, so the Bipolar Empire fanbase began to blossom. In 2009, the band travelled to the US to work with legendary music producer, Pat McCarthy (REM, Madonna, U2, Counting Crows), to start work on their debut album. Working tirelessly and making the most of their time in the US, Bipolar Empire played numerous gigs before heading to Austin, Texas, to perform at industry showcase South x Southwest. Bipolar Empire had always been a solid three piece but instinctively felt that there was perhaps a missing ingredient, something that would take their sound and live show to the next level. They approached long time friend Mark Maguire, a talented guitarist and song writer, and were delighted when he agreed to come onboard. With Maguire a fully fledged member of Bipolar Empire, the band went on
14
to perform a triumphant set at last year's Oxegen Festival, playing to a packed out crowd at the 2FM Hot Press Academy Stage. Driven by the momentum of a fantastic summer, the band went back into the studio with producer Lance Hogan to finish the album. With the album now in the bag, the outrageously catchy lead single Tempomanic, was released in October 2010. The track was quickly picked up by 2FM and provided the soundtrack to their brand new television and radio advertising campaign, 'Come Together'. The band went on the road, playing a host of venues around the country before playing a legendary set to a packed out crowd at The Workman's Club in Dublin. Current single 'Feel That You Own It' was released at the start of April, accompanied by a video starring boxing legend Katie Taylor, directed by Kevin Godley. This was followed by their debut album of the same name, released on April 29th. With 11 tracks brimming with heart bounding beats, thumping base lines, soaring guitars and the unmistakable voice of Shane O'Reilly, 2011 promises to be a massive year for Bipolar Empire. Their new single “Trip Around The World” is out on July 8th. The album is available to buy from iTunes and will also be available from all good record stores from July 29th. Don’t forget to check the lads out at Oxegen as they’re sure to put on a good show. The lads recently took time out of their busy schedule to talk to us about their past and future plans and ambitions...read their exclusive interview overleaf. For more information check out their website at www.bipolarempire.com, their facebook and myspace pages. What is the origin of the name of your band "Bipolar Empire"? We battled over the name of the band for a while, we had been known as ‘Good News’ & ‘The New Electrics’ but after having many discussions on finding something which suited us all we landed on Bipolar Empire. The origin behind the name is not so profound, there is no real relation to the condition Bipolar although we do feel it will create positive awareness of the condition and we thought Empire stands for what we would like to create with our music. What is each band members name, what part of Tallaght are you from, where did you go to school and which instrument do you play? Hi, I’m Shane O’Reilly, I’m the lead singer, I was brought up in Jobstown and went to school at Old Bawn Community School. Hello, Joe Leach here, I play bass guitar and I’m also from Jobstown and went to Old Bawn Community School. Hey, Callum McAdam here and I play drums. I have lived in a few places but the majority of my life has also been spent in Jobstown. I went to St Marks. Finally, Mark Maguire, lead guitarist, I live in Watergate and also went to Old Bawn Community College.

Are you self taught in your music or have your ever had lessons and what got you started in music? Mark - Generally we’re all self taught after having the usual music lessons at school, however there are a few interesting influences we would like to mention; Joe - My musical influences were closer to home, my Dad was in a band years ago called ‘The Trespassers’, based around Dublin and they performed all original tracks so that got me interested in music from a young age. Callum - Although I’m self taught as well I have to thank my best mate as a young lad at school, Eoghan O’Brien who really got me interested in music and being in a band. He used to have a band called ‘Fear of the Foliage’! So thanks Eoghan! Shane - I got into singing in Mosney (Holiday Camp) singing competitions as a young lad so continued on from there. Mark - Another local musician, Dillon Keane taught me my first chords! Your music style has been referred to as “Stylistic Folk Infused Rock & Roll”, what genre of music do you consider yourself to be? Shane - We seem to be quite happy with that description, we’re not sure
who originally described us like that but it sounds quite good so we’re happy to keep it at that! How did get the opportunity to record your album over in LA and what was the experience like? Callum - The opportunity came about from a guy called Paddy McKillen Jnr, he is one of a couple of key people who are part of our management, he and Suzanne Doyle pretty much manage us together. Paddy sent our CD to a producer in LA called Pat McCarthy, who he has known for a number of years. Pat kept putting off listening to the CD as he gets a lot of demos he has to say no to. Once he listened to it, he agreed immediately to work with us which was a major development in our progression as a band. Do you see a big difference in music culture in L.A opposed to Ireland? Shane - We didn’t really get the chance to experience much of the music scene over there as we basically spent two and a half months in the recording studio. We managed to see a couple of gigs while we were out there and the bands seemed to concentrate more on their stage performance than their musical content, which was a different approach.
Who writes your songs and what would the main themes or topics for most of your songs be? Shane - I mainly write all the songs and we try to write about real life issues, things in society and things that would influence us. Stuff people can relate to. An example is ‘Feel like you own it’ was influenced by the Leonardo DiCaprio film ‘Blood Diamond’. The film is set during the Sierra Leone Civil War and shows a country torn apart by the struggle between government soldiers and rebel forces. It also portrays many of the atrocities of war. So the song is to compare our society and lifestyles. How long does it take you to write a song on average? Shane - It depends really, they can take anything from about 10 minutes and some can just develop over time. What is your favorite song from your new album? Callam - “Start The Show” because I get to do a great drum solo! Mark - “Human Race” as I think it creates a really nice atmosphere. Joe - “Trip Around The World” because of the arrangements.
Photography: FMC Photography
Shane - Same as Joe, “Trip Around The World” as I really like how the song moves through the arrangements through to the end. What is the one band you would love to tour with? Mark - Ocean Colour Scene Joe - U2 Shane - The Strokes Callum - Guns and Roses, but it would have to have been on their ‘Appetite for Destruction Tour’!! What are your rehearsals generally like and do you have a set time each week for them? Mark - We don’t really have much time for rehearsals at the minute as we’re really busy with gigs, which is great as we think you can learn so much more from performing live. It also gives you more opportunity to be spontaneous which can help you in your live gigs, which is what rehearsing is all about anyway. What has been your biggest challenge as a band? I think finishing the album and going to LA was a major challenge. When we got home as well our producer, Lance
Hogan helped finely tune the finishing touches. We’re really pleased with the way it has turned out. What is your ultimate direction for your band and where do you see yourself in 5 years time? We want to do our second album and also increase our range of instruments. In 5 years time we want to be able to tour the world, that would be an amazing feeling. How can your fans gain access to your music? Do you have a website etc? You can access our music via our website, Bipolarempire.com, iTunes, Tower Records in Dublin, My Space. Do you have any upcoming shows? The remaining show’s we have over July and August are; Sat 9 July - Clonmel Junction Festival Sun 10 July - Oxegen, Punchestown Fri 29 July - Indiependence Festival, Cork Sun 31 July - Sunset Festival Gorey Fri 5 August - Bray Summerfest, Wicklow Sat 6 August - Revive Music Festival Sat 13 August - Bluebreeze Festival, Offaly Sun 21 August - Rose of Tralee, Kerry Fri 26 August - Oranmore, Galway Sat 27 August - Kilfinane Bike Fest, Limerick

As is the case with all Renaults, a good level of safety kit is offered, including ABS and stability control and a number of airbags and pop-up roll bars. General equipment levels are good too. It features keyless entry, Bluetooth connectivity, alloy wheels, automatic Lights and Wipers, cruise control and sat-nav, while the GT adds larger alloys, sports bumpers, rear park sensors, folding mirrors and GT badging. .....................................................

Most hatchback-based coupe-convertibles are bought on looks, which is good news for Renault as the Megane Coupe-Convertible is the most attractive model in its class. Beauty is of course in the eye of the beholder, but the sweeping lines on the bonnet lend themselves better to the drop top than the hatch, coupe and estate models that make up the rest of the range. The curved glass roof gives a genuine coupe silhouette when in place, and with it folded its neat swage lines help to disguise the extra bulk at the back. 01 28

In the early days, most coupe cabriolet models looked rather ungainly, with huge distended rears that would open up like something from a Bond movie and then swallow the hood mechanism whole. The Focus CC is an improvement from the worst of those models but it still doesn’t get things spot on at the back. At least it sorts out the secondary issue with early variations on the coupe-cabriolet theme, the lack of space inside. Focus Coupe-Cabriolet has 500-litres of room when the hood is up, although this does drop when the folding roof cartridge is in place. A full four-seater, the car may not be the answer to the family motorist’s prayers but it’s a lot more practical than its fun-loving agenda may suggest.
The two-piece electrically-operated hard-top roof whirrs into life at the touch of a button and takes just 29 seconds, with no catches, latches or levers needing to be manhandled. Once the roof is stowed in the boot, the Focus Coupe-Cabriolet’s lines are a good deal more elegant, with a classic rising waistline and a clean rear deck. Inside, the car’s dashboard layout follows
the style of other Focus models, but with a different colour scheme developed to distinguish it as a flagship.
Thanks to a metal folding roof, the 308 CC is a convertible that can be used all year round. The roof itself neatly folds away in around 20 seconds with the push of a single button while a clever feature called Airwave blows warm air around the
driver and passenger's necks, so you can have the roof down and stay warm even in the winter. There are a good choice of engines including some nippy turbocharged petrols. Like other coupe cabriolets of this size, the rear seats are pretty much
useless, except for luggage, while boot space is very limited with the roof down. .....................................................

Samsung made waves with its Galaxy range and has created a very tough act to follow, even for itself, so it comes as no surprise many are expecting big things from the next product sporting the Galaxy label. Enter the Samsung Galaxy S2. The anticipation surrounding this handset has been positively tangible and the swell of reviews since the recent release can only be described as a feeding frenzy. Samsung has certainly stepped up its game with some amazing new features. The 4.3" SUPER AMOLED Plus display goes a step beyond the already remarkable SUPER AMOLED to provide enhanced readability, a slimmer design, and better battery consumption for the best viewing value of any smartphone. The 8MP auto focus camera doesn’t miss any details whether you’re shooting idleness or action. It can take beautiful, detailed photos even in low light with the built-in LED flash. It also features 1080p Full HD Recording, every moment is a potential masterpiece in the making. Capture the action in high resolution and in dual core speed, instantly play back your HD footage in incredible clarity on its display or on your HD TV assuming you have the correct cables. Clocking at lightening speeds the unrivaled performance of the Dual Core Application Processor provides unsurpassed functionality and density for faster browsing, quicker multi-tasking, a smoother UI, snappier streaming and highly efficient gaming. With encoding/decoding ability that supports video play and recording, makes it no.1 among dual cores. The phone also features AllShare, it lets the Samsung GALAXY S II link wirelessly with a TV, laptop or even audio system to play multimedia files directly from the phone. All in all we get an overwhelmingly positive vibe from the Samsung Galaxy S2 reviews and it shows that the hype has largely been well deserved. Samsung clearly knew it needed to step up to the plate and outdo itself and by the sound of it, it certainly has done just that.

It is a difficult time for employees and employers in Ireland at the moment. Employees are anxious to find or stay in employment and employers are trying to keep their business going while trying to hold on to as much staff as is possible. However, it is the case that sometimes this cannot be achieved and the employment relationship breaks down.
any of these complaints (or any other unsatisfactory treatment) you may well have a claim against your employer and could be entitled to compensation. O’Brien Ronayne understand that discussing these issues can be stressful and upsetting however we will do our best to provide clear, concise and comprehensive advice to you in relation these matters, just contact us.
Anyone who works for an employer for a wage has a contract of employment (unless they are independent contractors). While quite a lot of employees don’t actually have a written contract, one exists nonetheless. While the law doesn’t specifically require an employer to give an employee a written contract of employment, the employer must, under the Terms of Employment (Information) Act 1994, provide to the employee a written statement detailing their terms and conditions of employment within two months of the employee commencing work. If an employer fails to provide this statement, they may face a claim before the Rights Commissioner, where an employee can be awarded up to four weeks wages. At O’Brien Ronayne we regularly attend before the Rights Commissioner for these claims and can assist you in this regard.
If a contract of employment is in place, whether it is in writing or not, the contract cannot be changed without the change being agreed by the employer and the employee. If a contract is changed unilaterally by the employer an employee may well have recourse either through the courts or through another employment forum such as the Employment Appeals Tribunal.
It is advisable to have a written contract within the workplace, as well as detailed policies such as a grievance and disciplinary procedure, in order to protect both the employer and the employee. This will essentially remove any uncertainty and will set out the procedure for dealing with issues that may arise such as bullying, harassment, victimisation etc. However in small businesses these procedures may not exist or can be difficult to implement. If you feel that you have been subjected to 32
If an employer is in a situation where they do not have enough work for an employee but it is only a temporary situation they may put in place lay off or short time working arrangements. Unfortunately these practices are becoming more common during these times. Short time arises where a reduction in an employee’s wages or working hours is made and such reductions are less than half the normal weekly amount. Lay Off on the other hand arises where the employer simply is not in position to provide an employee with work. If either of these situations occur an employer should explain the reason for it and must keep employees informed about the situation during its term. If the lay off or short time situation continues for four weeks or more, or six weeks in the last thirteen weeks, an employee can notify their employer (in writing) that they wish to claim redundancy. This must be carried out within four weeks of the end of the lay off or
short time. An employer may give an employee a counter notice within seven days essentially advising the employee that the situation is temporary and that work will be available within a short period. If a counter notice is not issued then an employee may be made redundant. However as the employee volunteered to be made redundant, they lose any entitlement to their notice being issued pursuant to the Minimum Notice and Terms of Employment Acts. On the other hand, if an employee has been made redundant by their employer they may be entitled to a redundancy payment as well as their notice under the Minimum Notice and Terms of Employment Acts. A redundancy arises if an employee’s job ceases to exist. The Redundancy Payments Acts provide a minimum entitlement to a redundancy payment for employees who qualify for it. In order to qualify, an employee must be at least sixteen years old and must be in employment that is insurable under the Social Welfare Acts. An employee must have worked then for a continuous period of at least one hundred and four weeks. If an employee qualifies for a redundancy payment they will be entitled to two weeks’ pay for each year of continuous employment, any weekly salary in excess of six hundred euro per week will not be taken into consideration in the calculation. A qualifying employee will also be entitled to an additional one week’s salary (again subject to the six hundred euro cap). There are specific rules in relation to the continuity of service and in relation to service that will be included in the calculation of the redundancy payment
(such as rules in relation to sick leave, protected leave etc) which O’Brien Ronayne can discuss in more detail with you if you would like. Any payment under the above formula received by an employee is tax free. If an employer makes an additional payment, known as an ex-gratia payment, an employee may receive a further basic exemption on this payment and (provided on the amount) may also be entitled to receive the payment tax free. It is vital that an employer selects staff for redundancy based on objective selection criteria. These criteria must be applied in a reasonable and fair manner. If an employee feels that they were unfairly selected for redundancy or that a genuine redundancy situation was not present they may bring a claim for
unfair dismissal and may be entitled to up to two years remuneration. If you feel that you may have been unfairly selected for redundancy or that your redundancy was not genuine (ie your job was not redundant) please contact us for more information . While it is not possible to detail all the protections available to employees in Ireland in this article, it is necessary to say that, overall, an employer must treat their employees fairly. An employer has an obligation to protect the safety, health and welfare of its employees. If an employer does not uphold this obligation, an employee could well have a claim against their employer. The relationship between an employee and employer is important and requires
mutual confidence and trust to operate properly and smoothly. If that relationship breaks down an employee can be in a very vulnerable position and may require the protection of employment law. At O’Brien Ronayne we will advise you as to your entitlements and rights in this regard. Please phone us on 01424 6200 where one of our Solicitors will be more than happy to talk to you. .....................................................

Hi, I’m Rachel Fallon your new Fashion Fix Columnist. Over the coming issues I will be looking at great fashion ideas ranging from vintage clothing, clothing for men, best fashion sites on the internet, festivals, designers, shoes, bags, and plenty more. Fashion is about freedom of expression and who you are as a person. You can make something that’s worth five euro look five hundred euro with the right attitude and accessories. This week I will be looking at New Look. I think they have great clothes at affordable prices. I teamed a maxi dress with a denim jacket and accessories. The maxi dress never seems to go away. It just seems to get better every season but especially this season, with the pop of colours like pink, orange, green and yellow, which are big this summer; down to the vast majority of celebs wearing colour in their videos. A lot of fashion comes from the catwalks and is modified to suit the high-street market. I think it’s good to mix and match things. .....................................................

Hi, Im Kelly Donegan. You may remember me from last month’s cover of InTallaght Magazine when I was in the running to represent Ireland at the upcoming Miss Universe Competition. Unfortunately, I didn’t win the overall prize but my career has taken off in many other ways that I would never have expected only a few weeks ago. Since last month I have been signed by the Andrea Roche Modelling Agency and have had the pleasure of being in dozens of photo shoots over the past few weeks. I have been in many publications such as The Sun and Sunday Independent. I have also got my very own column from the guys at InTallaght Magazine, and I look forward to telling you whats hot and the places to be seen over the coming months as well as some of my top tips for you aspiring young women. So this is my first piece of editorial, so where do I start? I have been asked to promote a new event here in Tallaght called BYOB Bowling in the Leisureplex. It’s an amazing new idea that they have come up with and it basically means “Bring Your Own Beer Bowling”, yes, you read it right! You can now have a few beers while bowling (as if I wasn’t bad enough already) before hitting the tiles Sex & The City style. Its set to be the next big thing and is definitely well worth giving a go or two. Look out for their Facebook page which is coming soon!
Oxegen is also coming up, I can’t wait. I will be in attendance representing the Captain Morgans Crew, so keep an eye out for me. I reckon it will be a great weekend and there are loads of acts I am particularly interested in seeing Swedish House Mafia will rock the place and I can’t wait to be in the crowd singing my head off to “Miami 2 Ibiza” and the likes. Calvin Harris is also a favorite of mine and I’m sure he will bring the house down, I just can’t wait. I also want to see Bipolar Empire who are a local, up and coming band from Tallaght. I think they will be as big as U2 one day, definitely one to watch out for. Don’t forget the wellies! Before I go, I would just like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who supported me, especially all the local businesses who gave their comments of support through InTallaght Magazine and in particular Couture Beauty on Tallaght High Street who did all my hair and makeup and also Cosmedical in Tallaght Village who gave me a microdermbrasion and jet peel. I would definitely recommend them ladies... .....................................................

LAWNS If you didn't get around to feeding your lawn in the spring, you may still apply a fast acting lawn feed now, you will really notice the results. Please make sure to follow the instructions on the bag very carefully as to not do so may cause more harm than good.
plants, such as hostas, which are prone to slug damage, can be protected by coating the rim of the pot with Vaseline. The slugs won’t crawl through it.
HANGING BASKETS Keep the lawn mowed even though this is usually a time when grass growth slows. If the weather is dry, mow high, but less often. The key is to only cut one third of the grass at any mowing. Cutting the grass too short, or cutting too much of the grass at one time can reduce the ability of grass to survive drought stress.
APHIDS In a jar, put 1 teaspoon washing up liquid and 1 cup of vegetable oil. Shake well. In an empty spray bottle, put 2 teaspoons of this mixture and 1 cup of water. Spray every week or up to ten days or more often if required to help rid plants of whitefly, mites, aphids, scales, and other pests.
Be sure to check the hanging baskets and container grown plants every day during hot weather and about every second day on overcast summer days, preferably when the sun isn't on them. Don't just check the surface, push your finger into the compost to make sure there is enough moisture below throughout the root area. Water them thoroughly each time you water, but be careful not to over water them. Clay pots can be positioned on trays filled with wet gravel. If you have a lot of window-boxes and hanging baskets, you should consider installing an automatic watering system controlled by a timer. You can also water hanging baskets by putting ice cubes on the top, moisture is slowly released as the ice cubes melt. Ensure these do not touch the plants as this may cause damage.
SLUGS As the weather warms up, perennials will start growing vigorously. To control slugs and snails, use beer traps, crushed shells or grit. Be careful slug pellets can be effective on slugs, but they may also poison birds that eat the pellets or the slugs. Container grown

PRUNING Prune back your rose bushes after the first bloom. You can either dead head the spent blooms or do a major cutting back to keep them neat and tidy and under control. I tend to do the lat-
ter. Cut back all weak and dead wood as well. Lastly, clean up all dead leaves, especially if they suffered from black spot. Plus, if black spot is a problem, use the following homemade formula: Mix one tablespoon of baking soda and a 1/4 teaspoon of dishwashing detergent in one gallon of water and spray as needed. Many spring flowering shrubs will benefit from pruning in early summer as this will give them time to make the new growth necessary for next year's flowers before the end of the season. .....................................................

July is set to be a huge month for Shamrock Rovers, as the Hoops will take part in the UEFA Champions League for the first time ever! Rovers got back to European competition after a seven year break last summer, but are set to go one better this year when they participate at the top level of European club football. The Hoops have been drawn against Estonian side, FC Flora Tallinn and enter the competition in the second qualifying round.
The month saw Rovers get through to the next round of the prestigious FAI Ford Cup, and knock up plenty of goals in both the league and cup. Rovers defeated Athlone Town 4-0 on June 3, which sees them through to the fourth round of the FAI Ford Cup where they will take on UCD at home. A hatful more goals were added to the tally in the Airtricity League when the Hoops ran out 6-1 and 4-0 winners against UCD and Galway United respectively.
Rovers will welcome FC Flora Tallinn to Tallaght first, when they host the first leg of the tie in Tallaght Stadium on Tuesday, July 12.
Those two wins were accompanied by two draws in the league against fellow title challengers, Derry City and St Patrick’s Athletic.
The Hoops will then travel to Estonia for the away game which takes place in Tallinn on Tuesday, July 19.
July will be another busy month for the Hoops, and kicks off with a home game against St Patrick’s Athletic on Sunday, July 3 at 2pm. .......................................................
Hundreds of Hoops fans are expected to make the journey to support the team in this important European encounter. Tickets for the home leg will be available from Tallaght Stadium – season tickets do not apply for European games, so make sure to get yours early to avoid disappointment.
