It’s finally summer! You may have noticed a few rays of sunshine in April but now we’re expecting some proper days outside to enjoy it, so come on sun, do your job! First up I want to let you all know about our exciting new Beauty section of InTallaght this month, which meant I got to be the first guinea pig (how awful, I know!) by getting my hair assessed by Style Club in The Square Towncentre Tallaght and trying out their new Pureology range. I was suitably impressed, but turn to page 52 if you want to hear why. This issue we also spoke to local fighter Pajo Hyland, one year on from his father’s death and after his defeat to Gary Russell Jr on April 15th in Mashantucket, Connecticut. Turn to page 18 for the full revealing interview. Additionally I got to interview a fantastic Tallaght woman Eimear Farrell who
is the founder of the aweinspiring ARTzheimers social enterprise. Through art, Eimear and her team hope to create a conversation about the disease and make changes about how it is dealt with in Ireland. As in every issue we are jam-packed with reviews, from book and car to cinema (yes we saw Captain America: Civil War and The Jungle Book) and games to music. And not only that but we are full of local community news, entertainment, business and sports news. It’s a wonder if you ever get to finish our massive magazine! NEWS BEALTAINE FESTIVAL STARTS ON MAY 1ST, HELPS CELEBRATE CREATIVITY IN OLDER AGE BY GENNA PATTERSON Mayor Sarah Holland will launch South Dublin County Council’s Bealtaine Festival in the Louis Fitzgerald Hotel, Naas Road, on Wednesday May 4th. The festival aims to celebrate creativity as we age and gives everyone the opportunity to discover a new talent or find a new way to use an old skill. It is an opening to make new friends and connect with your community. Bealtaine is co-ordinated by Age and Opportunity, the national organisation working to promote greater participation by older people in society. The name “Bealtaine” comes from the ancient Celtic festival of that name celebrating springtime, freshness and renewal. In South Dublin County the number of people age 65 and over is 23,053 and is rising. The aging population offers both challenges and opportunities to South Dublin County. South Dublin County Council has organised a number of events

TALLAGHT LIBRARY CELEBRATES IRISH HISTORY BY RACHEL LYNCH We were at Tallaght Library on April 19th where Michael Moylan was on hand to speak with the young children in attendance about Irish history, in particular 1916 and the events around it. He also had a number of replica items and costumes from the time for the children to take a look at and to help them get a feel for that
EUROPEAN WEEK AGAINST RACISM SCHOOL ART COMPETITION WINNERS CELEBRATED AT COUNCIL CHAMBER BY GENNA PATTERSON The County Council chambers in Tallaght were full of kids of all ages on April 15th as Councillor Cathal King awarded the winners of the European Week against Racism School art competition. In March the Council’s Social Inclusion Unit launched a competition to combat racism and celebrate cultural diversity of people living in Ireland today to mark March 21st as International Day for the Elimination of all forms of Racism. The idea behind this competition was to ask children, young people and adults living in South Dublin County to convey their own personal message against racism. Councillor

We caught up with Michael before he began to speak with the children and he told us about his “Museum that comes to you” and also about some of the items on display; “Today we are going to talk about 1916 with the children, rather than just talking about it I have brought a few bits with me too. We have different periods of guns here from the various rebellions we had here in Ireland. We talk about the different people involved in the 1916 Rising, The Irish Volunteers, The Irish Citizens Army and the IRB and we have costumes for each of those. Then in the end of it all we look at how the leaders were shot. So at the end of it all the children all get to dress up and maybe learn something as well.”
Cathal King met many of the winners, although unfortunately some were unable to attend due to communions or exams. One of the main objectives of the Council is to facilitate initiatives to promote integration in the county. A willingness to learn about different cultures and to communicate with others is the key to a successful, fair and open society. The winning slogan was designed by Julia McCall, St. Mac Dara’s Community College, Wellington Lane, Templeogue, Dublin 6W. A prize was presented to her by Mayor Sarah Holland on Tuesday March 15th in the school. The winning slogan has been circulated in sticker format to all primary schools, secondary schools and youth clubs in the county as part of the awareness campaign on eliminating racism.
DODDER DAY A SUCCESS BY GENNA PATTERSON Tallaght Community Council and volunteers helped to support the Dodder Action Group with the annual Dodder Day on Saturday April 23rd. Groups met up at Balrothery Weir, Watergate – Balrothery Greenway (St Dominics NS) and the cycle bridge at Bawnville – Kilininny. TCC focused on a litter pick, a stream clean and grafitti removal. They provided a tea and coffee break to all volunteers too. TCC thanked the volunteers for all their help in their ongoing effort to clean up the Dodder.
APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR TALLAFEST 2016! BY GENNA PATTERSON Tallaght Community Council (TCC) has announced that Tallafest 2016 will take place on Saturday September 3rd in Tallaght village. The event will take place later this year due to conflicting events in August and the Euro Football Championships. The focus will be on crafts, heritage, culture and imaginative play for children and families. Applications are now open for sports clubs, performers, crafters, volunteers and stall holders to participate at the village festival at this growing annual event which is in its fourth year! NEWS HEAD OF HOUSING ORGANISATION SAYS DUBLIN NEEDS MASSIVE INVESTMENT TO MEET FUTURE DEMANDS BY PADRAIG CONLON The chairman of the Housing Agency has said €34bn needs to be spent over the next 35 years on developing the region surrounding Dublin. Speaking at the Dublin 2050 conference, an event organised by Dublin Chamber to direct and focus plans for a Greater Dublin area by 2050, Dr Conor Skehan said future projects in Dublin must be undertaken with a “think big” attitude. The chairman said current plans for Dublin city and its surrounding areas were not ambitious enough. “We’re going to continue to grow and deal with problems as they arise, and that means we’ll just do things like add another lane or a few more junctions to the M50 and probably in 10 years
time, build another M50 10 kms outside of that,” “That’s not going to be the way we make this place work. We’ve got to have big, bold visions. We’ve to spend a lot of money every year for the next 35 years getting ready for that much bigger city.” He is also worried that Dublin runs the risk of falling short of its true potential as a great European city. “This will happen if businesses and government fail to quickly understand, accept and act on the reality of Dublin as a city region of over two million people that stretches from Wicklow and Dundalk in the east to Athy, Edenderry and Kells in the west.” “Ireland must stop playing catch-up, it must aspire for greatness. Our plans are always too small, too timid, too concerned with the needs of the next ten years. We need to plan for the next generation”, he added.
HSE COMMIT TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF PRIMARY CARE SERVICES IN THE TALLAGHT AREA BY GENNA PATTERSON The HSE has committed to the development of Primary Care Services in the Tallaght area. The issue was raised in the April meeting of the Regional Health Forum, Dublin Mid-Leinster by local Councillor Charlie O’Connor who also sought the current position regarding the provision of Primary Care Centres at Tallaght Cross and Greenhills Road. The RHF Management said that: “The Primary Care Centre at Tallaght Cross is due for completion in June 2016. It is anticipated that following completion

“I am from Knock in Mayo, I have two brothers and one sister. One of my brothers lives in Dubai, my sister is in Sydney and my other brother is back home in Knock. I went to a teacher training college in Drumcondra called St Pats, I then taught for two years in a Catholic school in Beaumont before moving to Kuwait for two years to teach in a British school. I have also been a teacher in Kazakhstan and Australia before returning to Ireland in 2009 where I started teaching in the Community National School model in Scoil Grainne Community National School. I taught there for three years and when I left I set up this school in Citywest. The school was established in 2012 and we started with 20 pupils all in junior infants and now we have 220 pupils with the junior infant’s class from 2012 now in second class and they will bring the school up to sixth class. We are still enrolling with spaces left for junior infants and third class for next year though. Community National Schools were established in 2008 and they are open to all faiths and beliefs. What’s cool about this school is that when I set it up initially parents were wondering what is
different about it. We have school uniforms, I am Mr. Conboy and all types of parents really like the inclusive ethos of the school. The school is going through a transition as the name is changing from Scoil Niamh Community National School to Citywest and Saggart Community National School at the beginning of June. The reason is because we have done a lot of work in and around the school for inclusion, equality and multicultural education and Scoil Niamh didn’t embody that. Irish is also a really important part of the school and our identity as a community national school should reflect who we serve and that is Citywest and Saggart. The main language of the school is English but Irish is still taught like any other school, and we do afterschool classes teaching French and German. About 40% of the kids in our school are from Poland so we have a teacher who comes in every Friday who teaches them Polish. In the foyer in the school we have three main displays, the multi-belief display, our equality wall and our human rights wall. The ethos of the school is one which encompasses all three of those walls. We have Muslim, Catholics, Hindus, Atheists, along with different types of families like single parents, same sex families, disabled parents and we are trying to represent and cater for everyone. We celebrate equality.

Paul said: “The main aim in setting up this clinic was to try to limit the huge flow of Irish patients travelling abroad to get their treatments done.
“In the past this has basically been due to the high cost of dentistry here. We want to provide an alternative to that. We want to offer the best dentistry and we aim to provide every patient with a range of quality treatments that are very affordable.” In his opening address Niall acknowledged the many people who helped the guys on this journey, including their families, friends and business team as well as South Dublin County Council. THE HYLAND WAY InTallaght spoke to local boxer Pajo Hyland about his substantial personal loss one year on and his motivation to keep the fighting spirit. BY PADRAIG CONLON @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG
“Boxing arouses two of the deepest anxieties we contain. There is not only the fear of getting hurt, which is profound in more men than will admit to it, but there is the opposite panic, equally unadmitted, of hurting others.” Norman Mailer This year is only nearly half way through and it would be fair to say boxing has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons. What with the current heavy weight champion Tyson Fury regularly coming out with disgusting comments, fighters being put in comas and then the shocking murder at the Dublin’s Regency Hotel, during the weigh-in for a fight night in the National Stadium it can certainly appear like a blood sport to those looking in. Even many who have been watching boxing for long enough

will have felt deep ambivalence towards the sport prior to any of these happenings this year. Then along comes a fighter like Pajo Hyland, an honest guy who has toiled in the sport for 12 years, and after one of the most emotionally challenging years of his life overcomes great personal sorrow to challenge for a world title. That he lost is not the main story here. The remarkable thing is that Pajo managed to come back at all. “Listen I challenged the WBC champion, trained hard for 12/14 weeks to try and become champion, yes I got caught with a great hook and he finished me. Reading sh*t from assholes makes me laugh, I would love them to jump into the ring and try have a go!” It’s the day after his second round defeat to Gary Russell Jr and Pajo is in flying form. The 32-year-old Jobstown native has been through the wringer but he’s still standing.
IT WAS HARD THE FIRST TIME I WAS FIGHTING WITHOUT HIM, IT KILLED ME REALLY The tragic death of his father Paddy last June, the man who introduced Pajo and his brothers, Eddie and Paulie to boxing and later coached them, was a massive blow. When he had his first fight after his Dad’s death against David Martinez last October he returned to sit on his stool after the first round ready for some words of wisdom from his father, the man who had been constantly in his corner from his beginnings in the sport as a young lad right up to his professional career. “It was hard the first time I was fighting without him, it killed

me really,” he says. “The training camp was grand, I wasn’t really thinking about it, but after the first round Tracey was talking to me and I looked to the left and asked ‘where is my Da?’. He just hit me a slap and said keep your head in the game, but I was looking for him.” Hyland is practically an amateur boxer these days and his full-time work is with the Mobile Plant Glass in Rathcoole, who also sponsor him. They gave him three weeks off to concentrate on preparing for the fight under the supervision of his trainer Pascal Collins.
DEADLY GAME The death last month of Portuguese mixed martial arts fighter Joao Carvalho at an event in the National Stadium again reopened the debate on the legitimacy and safety of all combat sports. Hyland says that he had never been hurt during his 12year professional career in the ring and some of the fears are unfounded. “I’ve never been hurt, I’ve never been dropped; I’ve never been rocked. You work on your defence. They say, ‘you’re barbaric people going in there fighting’ but we train for 10-12 hard weeks to fight against a guy knowing what he’s

good at, so I work on my defence so I don’t get hurt in the fight. The job [boxing] is no more dangerous than the other [glazing] job I’m doing now where I can slice the hand off myself,” said the featherweight. One of three boxing brothers, Pajo has perhaps slipped under the radar of the ‘mainstream’ Irish media when he moved to New York in 2011. Due to promotional problems, the 32-year-old has taken to the ring just four times in the past four years, and only once in his native land. The Tallaght man emerged victorious on all four occasions, with three wins arriving by stoppage. Hyland’s first bout Stateside was a unanimous decision victory over former Manny Pacquiao opponent Emmanuel Lucero. Two victories later, he was fighting on Pacquiao’s undercard. That December night in Vegas, he dropped a unanimous decision to the heavily-favoured Javier Fortuna for the interim WBA featherweight title, winning the respect of many in attendance as well as HBO’s commentary team for a gallant display against his more rapid opponent. It was the first defeat of his career, but proved he could hang tough at the highest level. It also produced one hell of a weigh-in.
Hyland’s world title shot had followed one of the most remarkable stories of his career: teaming up with ‘Team Snooki’ in November 2011. Indeed, ‘The Punisher’ was the first boxer she added to her stable. After leaving Snooki on good terms Hyland signed with famed boxing promoter Lou DiBella in May 2014.
DUBLIN HOMECOMING Six months later, Pajo fought in his home city for the first time in three years, outpointing Hungarian Oszkar Fiko on the undercard to Matthew Macklin’s fight with Jorge Sebastian Heiland at the 3Arena. His next scrap resulted in a stoppage victory over Manuel de los Reyes Herrera at Madison Square Garden in March of last year, and Hyland must have thought his luck had finally turned under DiBella’s guidance. His defeat last month is not the end of the world. Such was Gary Russell’s hand speed that even a master tactician would have struggled to come up with a plan to beat him. The American looked every bit the elite level fighter as he stopped Pajo in round two of their Foxwoods hosted World title fight. However, Team Hyland did go in with

Trainer Pascal Collins, speaking after Pajo’s defeat, believes there is success to come down the line. “The game plan was to stay in the fight early on then try and take advantage of the fact the champion hadn’t fought since last June, but as they say even the best laid plans go to waste. We knew that he was World Class going into the fight, that wasn’t unknown. However, where we were surprised was he started so quick. With him being out for so long we didn’t expect that,” he said. “The plan was to stay in the fight early on and then as he had been out so long we felt he would tire and we could go to work then. The plan was not to get caught early, but Russell Jr had other ideas, he saw Pajo was holding his left hand a bit low

PAJO HYLAND and he landed that right hook. He shook Pajo and he never really recovered.” Now after seeing the WBC belt holder in the flesh he is adamant he is a special fighter, one that could beat the much avoided Guillermo Rigondeaux and one that possesses the kind of talent, speed and power that means losing to him is not a disgrace. “Put it this way Gary Russell Jr is a brilliant fighter,” said Collins. “I think people underestimate Russell Jr, he is a World Class talent. I knew that going into the fight, just look at his record and his experience as an amateur, but when you see him from ringside rather than on TV you get a better appreciation for what he can do. I have to say ten out of ten in bravery for Pajo even taking the Russell Jr fight, that is the type of fighter he is. I know going forward too he would take any fight you have to respect him for that..” The featherweight division is packed with stars and talent, but Collins believes Russell Jr is the one to watch at the weight. “I think he will be avoided by the featherweights now. It is no disgrace losing to him. His speed is unreal and he caught Pajo and Pajo never really recovered. He wasn’t hurt per say as after the fight he got the all clear, but he was rocked. It was more Pajo’s pride that was hurt getting stopped for the first time, even dropped for the first time, but there is no disgrace in losing to Russell Jr.” There was absolutely no shame in losing to a man who will more than likely be a superstar in the future. In spite of his defeat, Pajo still achieved a lot. He proved he is a brave, strong competitor and with only two career defeats under his belt there is no reason why this should be the end. Hopefully this isn’t the last we’ve seen of The Punisher.

THE POWER OF PAINT Tallaght woman Eimear Farrell spoke to us about her social enterprise ARTzheimers, which aims to start the conversation about alzheimer’s and implement social change. BY GENNA PATTERSON @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGENNA
ARTzheimers is the brainchild of Kilnamanagh native Eimear Farrell, which through art aims to educate and create conversation about the debilitating disease that is alzheimer’s. The social enterprise was ten years in the making and was instigated when Eimear experienced first-hand what it was like to lose a loved one to alzheimer’s. She knew something had to change and she was the one to do it. Ten years ago while studying at the Institute of Technology Tallaght, she had plans to be an accountant and venture into the business world but her Grandmother’s demise into the complex disease urged her to move into social care instead. She said, “My eyes and ears began to understand this disease that I’d never really understood and when my grandmother died I completely shifted my focus. I felt that with my personal experience I wanted

IT’S NOT JUST AN ART EXHIBITION FOR THE SAKE OF IT, THERE WAS A REAL PERSON BEHIND THIS STORY, A TRUE TESTIMONIAL to do something really meaningful and work in this sector.” She said she didn’t know how to go about it at first, so applied to be a caseworker with the Alzheimer’s society and that’s where her eyes really opened up to the sector. “My observations of the shortcomings as a professional in the industry led me to the point that we’re not doing enough for people with dementia. The model that we have here and across the world is flawed; it’s very heavily medical based. There’s not enough recognition for the social model of care and so from that my annoyance led to me thinking I want to be productive, I want to help.” Initially Eimear went down the technology route and developed an app called The Five Senses of Alzheimer’s and got onto a development programme with Google. However, Eimear said it just didn’t feel right; “Google were very much interested in scaling this and going global but there was something in my heart saying this is not the right route for me. Being a Mam (of two children) I need to be at home, so I need to be able to do both and had I gone down the technology route I’d have to end up in Silicon Valley or something.” For now the app is parked and she might look further at developing it in the future but its aim was to engage all five senses of those suffering from the disease.
From there Eimear went back to the drawing board wanting to come at the topic of alzheimer’s in “an innovative way, a way that hasn’t been done before and a way that is going to engage the public because that’s how you create that ripple of change.” She explained, “I really wanted to understand why as humans do we not face this disease? In the way that cancer and diabetes is normalised, and I realised that my experience working with care givers the same thing kept coming back up which was we don’t want to talk about it, it’s the elephant in the room, it’s the stereotypical way we deal with mental health.” “It was really figuring out how I could normalise this topic and this is where the idea of an art exhibition came from.” Eimear said that she has always been surrounded by art and exhibitions from an early age and she recognised that it is easier for people to connect with than a PowerPoint presentation or medical brochures.
STARTING SMALL When she first started ARTzheimers, she sent a one page brief to the Arthur Guinness programme, where it was successfully nominated. While it didn’t get down to the final ten the public reaction to it was enough to spur Eimear on to make it happen. Over the course of about eight months Eimear met with
artists from all over and the project started to spread by word of mouth. “People just attached themselves to it because I kept it brief, about a man I’d met while working with the Alzheimer’s society called Leo Casey.” Leo was a client of Eimear’s but the two became friends. “It was his story, his journey through alzheimer’s that really resonated with me. I got to document, film and photograph his journey over seven years. It was his demise through the disease that I found fascinating because I got to know him behind the disease. I thought it was a good scenario to work with and I think the artists realised that because the story was humanised that there was real meaning behind this. It’s not just an art exhibition for the sake of it, there was a real person behind this story, a true testimonial.” For the first exhibition in July 2014, 40 artists signed up and showcased their works in St Catherine’s Church in Dublin 8. Eimear said that there was a queue down Thomas St to get in on opening night, so she knew then that people wanted to engage in the topic. Eimear had also asked the European Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly for support and she agreed to open the first night of the exhibition. “What came from that was a huge outpouring of support from the public, the fact that we were bringing this hard emotive topic to them through the medium

ARTZHEIMERS of art, it enabled people to talk about their own personal stories which was the beginning of where this had the potential to go.” The exhibition’s subject, Leo, died a month after the showcase and while he was bedridden and didn’t get to see it, his family supported the event. In November Eimear had another call out for a new exhibition and by that stage they had 120 artists contributing. She explained how the idea then evolved, “My son Adam who was 10 at the time was at home with me when I was working on the laptop and he’s a brilliant animator. He handed me a sketch that he had done earlier on about Leo and alzheimer’s. He hadn’t known him but he had been listening to me talk about it for the last year. It amazed me that a 10-year-old could grasp such a complex disease with a striking image so this brought me to the idea that no one was addressing the topic in schools.”
SCHOOL SUCCESS Eimear approached two schools in Clondalkin and piloted at St. Josephs and Coláiste Bríde so that they could have both primary and secondary schools. Eimear said she had never done anything like this before, never brought this topic to such a young audience. “That’s where the real power kicked in because what they produced and their ability to absorb a topic from just a one hour conversation they came back with outstanding pieces of art. So detailed, so emotive, that I knew then we were on to something really, really powerful and something that could change the world.” The children’s art was then showcased in Áras Chrónáin Irish Cultural Centre alongside acclaimed artists. “Not only did we do this as a classroom but this rippled out into the family homes,” Eimear said. “It became a real intergenerational project, the families got involved and the

parents got involved and then we knew that we’d got it, it was the key. Start young, plant the seed young, because the later generation unfortunately have that fear and that stigma attached to alzheimer’s, so are we going to change the world? Yes. How are we going to do it? We’re going to bring it into classrooms.” Eimear also met the Mexican ambassador Carlos Eugenio Garcia de Alba at a web summit and he invited her to meet with his team at the embassy. He then offered the embassy as a possible place for people to exhibit, and on the opening night he invited Minister Kathleen Lynch, Minister for Primary Care, Mental Health and Disability and Jimmy Deenihan, Minister for Arts, as well as various political people from Mexico. The exhibition ran for a month and got a huge outpour from the people. ARTzheimers also displayed at Tallafest last summer as well as at the RDS for Art Source, Ireland’s premier art exhibition for three days.
FUTURE FOCUS So what is next for ARTzheimers? Eimear is putting another call out for a new exhibition for emerging artists and this time the artists will be paid. While a location hasn’t been settled yet, she wants to bring it home, closer to Tallaght where it all started. She said, “We have about 30 spaces for this national call out and there will be panel interviews so everybody who enters will be called for an interview in July. We want to meet with everybody; we want to be clear about the guidelines as well and the briefs.
We’re working with their creative talents but the briefs are very specific this time, the briefs are telling the story and that’s why everybody will get a fee as it’s very important to fund the arts sector too.” The next thing ARTzheimers are doing is looking for sponsors from businesses, asking them to support this social enterprise initiative, while educating about alzheimer’s on a domestic point. “If it engages the public in a very good way, well then it’s going to directly or indirectly benefit the organisations already working with alzheimer’s. We give back in so many ways and I don’t know any other entity that does that.” For those interested in submitting to exhibit or sponsoring the social enterprise, you can find more information at artzheimers.com. Eimear also aims to pilot her school education enterprise with another school; St Aidan’s in Tallaght and then roll out an educational resource package, something the teachers can do with the children themselves. She explained, “This is something that we hope will be rolled out not just in Ireland but across the world because it’s such a unique enterprise. I’ve a very good feeling that this is going to spark off so we’ll make that available online.” Eimear will also be taking to the main stage in Dublin’s RDS arena on October 11th to 13th for ‘Zeminar’, which is described as Ireland’s largest and most inclusive summit for senior cycle students. She will be sharing the main stage with Ireland’s most influential speakers such as Bressie, Dr Rhona Mahony (Master of NMH), Ian Power (Director of SpunOut) and Fr. Peter McVerry to name but a few. We wish Eimear and ARTzheimers all the best and know that it will continue to grow and evolve for years to come. ARTzheimers are now based in RUA RED opposite The Square.

With two tickets to watch Ireland v Sweden in Paris and all flights and transport arranged, there was a massive interest and so many people entered, but there could only be one winner! First we narrowed the list down to 50 random people on Thursday April 21st and then we held a public draw in the Centre Mall on Friday April 22nd at 1pm. An excited crowd gathered to watch Rovers footballer Mikey Drennan do the honours of pulling a name – Joanne McCarthy Kelly – who was absolutely thrilled to have won! April also brought Eco Week to the Centre and we welcomed talks from numerous organisations to show all of us how to save money while reducing our energy consumption. Last month we made some lovely little ones very happy with the help of our tenants and staff in the Centre by donating Easter Eggs to The National Children’s Hospital. It’s always such a pleasure to organise the donation as we know it will bring smiles to the faces of those that need chocolate cheeriness the most! We have some great news for our more health focused shoppers too, as Chopped the salad bar is coming to The Square soon! Just in time for summer. OURFACEBOOK EURO 2016 PRIZE DRAW We were delighted to announce the winner of our fantastic Facebook Euro 2016 prize-draw last month. After a random selection of 50 entrants from our Facebook page we had the official giveaway here on the Centre Mall. There was plenty of excitement throughout the Centre as many of the finalists began to turn up to witness the big draw, hoping to be the lucky one whose name was to be picked. Shamrock Rovers footballer Mikey Drennan was here to pick the lucky winner, and we all waited patiently as he emptied all 50 names into a pot and mixed them. After weeks of anticipation and excitement the name
was pulled and that name was Joanne McCarthy Kelly! There was a round of applause from everyone who viewed the draw, followed quickly by a loud roar. “Joanne it’s us, it’s us, we have won it”. Joanne and her husband were in attendance for the draw and couldn’t believe their luck when her name was the one picked! We spoke with her after she had gotten over the initial shock but her husband seemed even happier with the win! It was clear he was the one she would be taking on the trip of a lifetime although she did joke, “I’m not sure who I’ll bring,” while turning and smiling at her husband. We hope you enjoy your trip to the Ireland v Sweden game guys and remember to take plenty of pictures for us all to enjoy the trip with you!
THE SQUARE’S PUPPET SHOW EVENT This month’s FREE family event was The Puppet Show, held on the Centre Mall on Level 2 on Saturday April 16th. Excited families gathered around to be entertained by the live Punch and Judy shows every hour from 1-4pm, but you had to watch out for Mr. Punch if he was in a bad mood! There was free face painting as well and what child doesn’t love having their face painted? Then for the crafty kids there was a fun puppet-making workshop for all the little ones to design their very own puppets! All the children had a great time and they all had big happy grins on their faces, which was certainly infectious and made the whole Centre smile! This is the 10th year the group have devoted their time to making and selling knitted goods for the hospital and to date they have raised a staggering amount of nearly a quarter of a million!
COMMUNITY CHAMPION For anyone who was in The Square or The National Children’s Hospital last month you will have seen the wonderful ‘Easter Chicks’ at work, selling their knitted Easter chicken egg cosies to raise funds for the hospital. The ladies work year round to make the little chicks in all colours and so we wanted to reward them for all their efforts! We presented the Easter Chick’s organiser, Ann Carthy as our April Community Champion as she’s the one who gets all the ladies
OOPSADAISY’S RETURN We were delighted to see the Oopsadaisy Play Group return this month after a three week break over the Easter. If you have a little preschooler at home that you would like to get out and about once a week to have fun with other

Not only do the ladies make the goods, but they take turns to sell them at stalls from early morning to late in the evening. Their support has ensured that the children who stay at the hospital are afforded the highest level of support and care, through the purchase of vital updated equipment, the development of a specialised outdoor play area within the hospital, improved facilities for parents who stay with their children as well as providing art therapy for our young patients. EASTER EGG DONATION We would like to say thank you to all the stores and individuals throughout The Square for their generosity again this Easter. Due to all the fantastic donations collected by Andy Case we were able to donate Easter Eggs to the boys and girls in The National Children’s Hospital, Tallaght. It was so nice to give some tasty chocolate to those who needed it most! With great support and so many Easter Eggs collected with our appeal we were also able to help out our local charity St. Vincent de Paul. This is something we at The Square are so proud to be a part of each year and we want to thank you all again for helping us with this great cause. The hospital sent us a lovely thank you letter which also said that the two delivery men were extremely helpful and they wanted to thank everyone in The Square who donated for their generosity and ongoing support.

LEARNING WITH ECO WEEK Eco Week 2016 was officially launched here at The Square on Monday April 18th on the Centre Mall. Eco Week is an international non-governmental non-profit organisation with the mission to raise awareness on Environmental issues, Climate Change and to promote the principles of Sustainability.We had a number of great speakers from
various organisations here to talk to our customers over the four days. Organisations like the SDCC Environment Awareness Dept and WEEE Ireland, Eastern-Midlands Regional Waste Office c/o Dublin City Council and a Stop Food Waste Stand were here with great advice to help us all learn how to support the environment while saving money! Eco Week celebrated 10 years of activity this year and has organised and co-organised events in 12 countries around the world and so we here at The Square were very excited to be part of it!
There was a fantastic welcome in the Centre as Shamrock Rovers launched their new kit at Direct Sports on Saturday April 16th. Rovers stars Brandon Miele and Mikey Drennan were here to meet fans fresh after their 4-0 win in the Dublin Derby against Bohs the night before. TALLAGHT ENTERPRISETOWN As you know we are always happy to get involved in local projects in Tallaght and this month is no different. We are taking part in the Bank of Ireland Enterprise Town Business Expo on May 6th in Tallaght Stadium from 3pm to 7pm where there will be some exciting speakers including celebrity chef Rachel Allen, Sea Horse Aquarium’s Kealan Doyle, The Fairy Door’s Oisin Barry, Hub Control’s Ollie Hynes and Synergy Centre’s Tom Rooney. THE NATIONAL CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL TALLAGHT APPRECIATION EVENING We were honoured to be invited to The National Children’s Hospital Tallaght’s Appreciation evening on Wednesday April 20th. It is always a wonderful event where we get to hear how the fundraising efforts of the past year have helped the little ones in the Children’s Ward. The National Children’s Hospital is The Square Towncentre’s charity of choice so we were extremely pleased to attend. A whole host of supporters were there to celebrate including local businesses, the Easter Chick ladies and many of the team from the women’s mini marathon. Refreshments and food were served and there was also live music to entertain while everyone mingled and chatted about the work they had done to raise funds for the hospital. Lillian McGovern, Head of Communications and Fundraising spoke about how happy she was to be able to give back to the people who put so much into raising funds for the
children’s hospital: “This is our opportunity to say thanks very much to all the people who support the National Children’s Hospital, so from all the people here you have those who run events, run the marathons, corporate people who raise money within their companies and they all do it because they are very proud of the children’s hospital in the area and it’s their local community and this is our chance to say thanks very much”. We also received very special thanks, which was lovely! Lillian said: “I want to thank The Square and Cathryn who supported this by offering the Easter Chicks a wonderful accommodation within the Centre and also have awarded them the Community Champion award to which they will be honoured with next week to mark their 10th anniversary”.

THE JUNGLE BOOK BY GENNA PATTERSON @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGENNA
I was lucky enough to get to the 3D preview of The Jungle Book, which is absolutely brilliant! There were literally tigers and pumas flying out at me and making me jump out of my seat! For anyone who knows Disney’s original 1967 animated version, you won’t be disappointed with this new live-action movie. I personally had the sing-a-long VHS as a child and was thrilled to be able to see a new version that will delight a whole new generation of kids (and adults)! Directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man) the CGI visual effects are amazing and you’d be forgiven for forgetting they didn’t actually hire real animals to play the roles of puma Bagheera (voiced by Ben Kingsley), bear Baloo (Bill Murray), snake Kaa (Scarlett Johansson) and tiger Shere Khan (Idris Elba). Think the Life of Pi multiplied by a thousand as a whole jungle is built and not just a tiger on a boat! Mowgli is played by Neel Sethi, who is
now 13 but looks far younger in the movie. He seems like he was born to play the role and has no problem holding the screen alongside a green screen animal! While the story follows the general Rudyard Kipling tale as the animated one, it is less musical, but still manages to pay homage to it with a rhyme by Kaa and a song by Balloo. I also especially enjoyed Christopher Walken as King Louie, a monstrous ape who wants ‘mans red flower’ from Mowgli. Bill Murray is endlessly entertaining as Baloo, a manipulative and lazy bear after food and an assistant to steal him honey. Meanwhile Idris Elba is terrifying as Shere Khan which is exactly how he’s supposed to be. Ben Kingsley as Bagheera was so close to the original I want to go back and check it for similarity! I was only slightly disappointed with the short screen time focused on Kaa and indeed the elephants don’t get the same fun scenes as the animation. However, I have to say I enjoyed every minute and will definitely watch this again! An exceptional masterpiece for all the family.

THIS IS POSSIBLY MY FAVOURITE MARVEL MOVIE SO FAR AND I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT
As I was walking out of this preview screening I heard someone declare: “Marvel just handed DC their ass on a plate with that movie!”, and I have to agree. It had pretty much everything you need for a successful superhero franchise movie; a great action-filled start, a bad guy who cannot be reasoned with (or found initially), and a host of cameos from other (recently transferred to the big screen) superheroes from the Marvel universe. When yet another Avengers mission (this time in Africa) ends in the deaths of innocents, the United Nations wants to nationalise the group so that all efforts at war are decided by a panel. This is when the ‘civil war’ part comes into effect; Iron man (Robert Downey Junior) wants to sign away their rights to act as they choose, while Captain America (Chris Evans) wants to remain without a master. And so the Avengers split and take sides while a bad guy (is it Bucky Barnes or is it somebody else?) reeks havoc around them.
The marketing team behind this movie is pretty smart too as they are encouraging a Twitter war on whose side you the viewer choose. I have to confess I voted #teamironman, as he finds the time to discover a young Peter Parker AKA Spiderman (Tom Holland). However I could be swayed as Captain America draws on Ant Man’s (Paul Rudd) capabilities to help him. There is a fantastic showdown of all the Avengers too, so most fans will enjoy that. I think though that the awe-struck meeting of the new recruits and the seasoned pros is just brilliant too. There is plenty of humour throughout, though slightly less than in previous Avengers’ movies, as if they realised toning it down would actually make the comedic moments stand out more. The only fault I can possibly give this movie is that it ran a little long, at nearly two and a half hours! This is possibly my favourite Marvel movie so far and I would highly recommend it. Also fun trivia, Irish viewers get to see this movie a full week before the US fans, so there’s something you can brag about on Twitter.

Green Room is more a thriller than a horror but don’t be fooled into a false sense of security, there are plenty of ‘hide behind the sofa’ moments. This film puts gore on another level to anything I have seen before. When a punk rock band turn up to perform in a venue miles from town practically hidden away from civilization they realise all is not what it seems and that the crowd they are there to entertain could be their toughest yet. After struggling through their set they accidently witness a murder. Wanting to just get up and leave the band hurry to find an exit but the venue is run by white supremacists who are not willing to let anyone leave and are intent on covering up their crime. From then on, the film really gets messed up in all aspects of the word and the band are forced to fight for survival in the most brutal way possible. If you love gore then this is the only film for you this year. Some of the scenes are pretty tough viewing, but that aside the storyline never fails to keep you entertained. Will the good guys have enough fight in them to survive?
Social Media is a scary place at times but it’s about to become deadly for one popular student. The film opens with a lecturer announcing to his class that a girl from the year Marina has committed suicide, the camera focuses in on one shocked student called Laura and her friends, before rewinding back two weeks. Marina has no friends and goes virtually unnoticed at school – that is until one day she requests to be friends with Laura. Laura instantly accepts the request without any thought and that weekend posts pictures of herself out enjoying life with others in the year. This is when the tale turns nasty as Marina is furious and aggressively confronts her the next day. Laura soon unfriends Marina from Facebook but this has disastrous consequences. Soon Laura and her friends become victims in Marina’s evil plans and before Laura loses everyone around her she must discover the truth of Marina’s dark past. This really is a teen horror that will keep you wondering “can it get any worse?” and of course it does. Who would have thought a simple click of accept could turn into Laura’s life upside down? A good one to watch with your real friends!

Eye in the Sky is a tense British thriller that will put you in the hot-seat of making life or death decisions while analysing it from various different perspectives, and judging the ones made. Starring Helen Mirren as Colonel Katherine Powell, Aaron Paul as 2nd Lieutenant Steve Watts and the late great Alan Rickman as Lieutenant General Frank Benson, the movie is based around a joint operation around a safe-house in Nairobi, Kenya that is under surveillance by British, Kenyan and American forces via Drone technology. The plan is for the armed forces to keep the safehouse under surveillance as it is believed that some of the world’s most wanted terrorists will arrive to meet new recruits and when that happens they will intercept and bring them to justice. Unfortunately for those involved not everything goes to plan and you will be left on the edge of your seat and second guessing every decision that is made and not made in this fantastic film. The film features a stellar supporting cast with Barkhad Abdi playing one of the soldiers on the ground in Kenya tasked with getting close to the compound and Iain Glen as the British Foreign Secretary James Willett. Although a lot of the action takes place away from the killzone this is not a film that needs a lot of action as it is a fast-paced film, jumping around the globe, and giving the viewer an insight into the chain of command which will both fascinate and infuriate you in equal measure.

I’m usually one for the horrors but from time to time some romantic films come along that win me over in that genre. Me Before You is one of those films and is based on a much-loved book by Jojo Moyes. Seen The Notebook? Well Me Before You will give you the same mixed emotions from elation to sheer devastation and everything in between. The trailer alone will be enough to bring on a watery eye. The heartfelt story tells of Louisa Clark (Emilia Clarke) and Will Traynor (Sam Claflin) both young but both living very different lives. Louisa is a happy-go-lucky kind of girl who just loves life in her small village. Will, who once travelled the world is now housebound after a tragic accident that sees him paralysed from the neck down. Louisa needs a job to help support her family who depend on her wage and when a job offer comes up as a caregiver she accepts the challenge and as you can guess it’s at Will’s family mansion. The pair find it hard to get on at the beginning as Will now has a very cynical outlook on life since his crash, but their relationship begins to blossom over time as Louisa tries to help Will realise that life is worth living. Both lives change after their period of time spent together but will their love last forever? Most fans of the book will be delighted to know that it’s very close to it and doesn’t deviate from the original sweet storyline! For the first time this year (possibly ever) I have decided that this film deserves five stars!

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS U2 REMAIN ON THE MUSIC RICH LIST WITH €635M FORTUNE BY GENNA PATTERSON Dublin rock legends U2 have remained in third place on the Sunday Time’s Music Millionaires Top 50 list this year. Paul McCartney and wife Nancy Shevell topped the list with €965m while composer Andrew Lloyd Webber came in second with €908m. These were the same three on the top of the list last year. The Music Millionaires list is based on identifiable wealth, which includes property, assets and shares in publicly held companies, but excludes bank accounts. RAY SCULLY HAS A NEW SINGLE OUT AND WE LOVE IT BY RACHEL LYNCH It was back in 2013 that Tallaght man Ray Scully came on the scene and introduced Ireland to his talent on the second series of The Voice of Ireland. His cover of It’s A Man’s World stunned the panel of judges that included former Westlife man Kian Egan who was most impressed with Ray’s vocal talent. Since his time on the show Ray’s career has gone from strength to strength with him performing up and down the country. Now he has a new single out and we have to say we absolutely love it! Comprehend is a beautiful song that should be played on all the airways over the next few months. We at InTallaght spoke to Ray and

Other notable Irish wealthy people on the list are Enya at 28th position and Niall Horan and his fellow One Direction bandmates reached a collective third place in the Under 30s list with €42m. asked him all about it. “Myself and a friend of mine called David Doyle wrote it, the song is simplistic, it’s about not worrying about life and worrying about things. One of the lines in it ‘I’m a man with no great means, I work hard I have dreams’ sums it up really”. It’s a feel-good song and the video complements it so well with beautiful scenery of the Irish countryside, Ray really has got it all right with this one. With almost 8000 views and hundreds of shares on Facebook Ray says he couldn’t be happier. “I’m very thankful and overwhelmed by the response to Comprehend.” I’m planning on finishing my second album and releasing that, but I’m also hoping to get a good bit of radio play with this new single”. GLASNEVIN CEMETERY DOCUMENTARY WINS NY FESTIVALS WORLD’S SILVER MEDAL BY GENNA PATTERSON A documentary about Glasnevin Cemetery called One million Dubliners, has won a prestigious Silver Medal for Documentary at the New York Festivals World’s Awards this year. Held in Las Vegas this year, the awards aim to recognise the best in International TV and Film. One Million Dubliners was commissioned by
RTÉ and reflects on the number of people who rest in peace at the North Dublin graveyard. Director Aoife Kelleher said of the awards: “We are honoured that One Million Dubliners has received such a prestigious international accolade and delighted that it will soon be followed by the release of our upcoming feature documentary about Ireland’s miracle town, Knock. “We are very grateful to the staff of Glasnevin, without whose support and generosity One Million Dubliners could not have been made, and to the family and friends of the incomparable Shane MacThomáis (late tour guide of Glasnevin)… It’s wonderful that audiences around the world have taken the film into their hearts.” The documentary made its debut at the Galway Film Fleadh in 2014.

X FACTOR AUDITIONS IN DUBLIN LAST MONTH BY RACHEL LYNCH The X Factor team along with our very favourite presenter Dermot O’Leary made their way to Dublin last month. The TV competition show returned to the capital this year to hold auditions for the next big singing sensation. Auditions were being held at the RDS Simmons Court, in Ballsbridge, Dublin 4 from 9am on Sunday April 24th. However they also gave people the chance to send in an audition video via application.xfactor. tv if they couldn’t be there on the day. This could well have been your last chance to seek fame as rumours are flying around suggesting this may well be the last year.
BY RACHEL LYNCH Songwriter and local man Keith O’Connell last month announced that he would be releasing his first single from his new album on May 27th. At The End Of The Day will be available on iTunes and the Tallaght man says he cannot wait for the first song from his album Genetic Lottery to be released. Keith grew up in Aylesbury and has since been living in Kilnamanagh in Tallaght for the last 10 years. The 36-year-old has played support to various artists including Aslan (one of the gigs being in The Cork Opera House) along with Mickey Harte and Picturehouse. Keith plays both keyboards and acoustic guitar to complement his songs. The Tallaght man told us; “At
THE VENGABUS CAME TO TALLAGHT The End Of The Day is a song I wrote when on holidays in Ayia Napa dying with a hangover by the pool a few years ago. The lyrics “as the sun shines bright everyone is happy, it’s seems like this is the place we should have been a long long time ago” was basically describing how I was feeling then. “The chorus has the lyrics “at the end of the day what have you got, If you haven’t got a song to sing” – those lyrics show how big and important music is in my life.” Listening to Keith’s new single I have to say it gets a massive thumbs up from us here at InTallaght. Keith is one to watch this year and we wish him all the best with his new album.

The Dutch Eurodance group who started entertaining us back in the late 90’s gave us one night and one night only to enjoy the famous tunes like Boom Boom Boom Boom, We Like To Party and We’re Going To Ibiza. They call themselves Europe’s number one party crew and I doubt you will find many that disagree with that. The group aren’t showing signs of slowing down anytime soon either with concerts all over the world. From Australia to Berlin and many more in between and that’s just this year.

It will always be difficult, if not actually almost impossible and unnecessary to write a review that measures new material against the old from an artist of Elton John’s caliber. Mr. Captain Fantastic is a troubadour, a pop icon and a rock and roll star and throughout his career he has given us everything our hearts could desire. From the Country and Western Americana inspired blues on my favorite album Tumbleweed Connection (1970), to the guilty pleasures of the 80’s, such as the up-tempo ballad Little Jeanie (1980), to, of course, making music history with both his early and late classics. Now he’s painting the town red again with Wonderful Crazy Night, his 32nd studio album. The ten songs are written in collaboration with Bernie Taupin and it’s the first album since 2006 where he has his old mates from the 1970’s glory days, drummer

Nigel Olsson, guitarist Davey Johnstone and percussionist Ray Cooper with him in studio. The production is by Elton John himself and musical legend T-Bone Burnett, who also produced Elton’s last album The Diving Board (2013). Wonderful Crazy Night is a mixture between mature ballads and up-tempo blues rockers. There is no new musical territory on WCN, the man is being himself 100% and the tunes are echoes of some of Elton’s bestknown hits. It kicks off with the title track, a piano rocker in known Elton John style. It’s a bit cheesy, but as Elton has stated himself - he’s in a happy place and he wanted WCN to be a ‘joyous’ album, so I guess a bit of cheese is only to be expected. The song is meant to reflect his warm feelings about his husband and his kids. The guitar based In The Name of You feels like meeting an old friend. Elton just kills it with this groovy replication of old dreams and magic. The band rocks, Nigel is drumming like never before, the hooks are too good and Davy just sizzles - his fiery electric guitar solo is one for the books. Elton can still surprise, not because this is anything new, but because he still nails it to create that amazing atmosphere
he is known and loved for. Blue Wonderful is another classic Elton tune and it could very well, together with In The Name of You, be one of the Wonderful Crazy Night’s Tour’s concert favorites. The dreamlike video is also one to watch. Country inspired I’ve Got 2 Wings and ballad A Good Heart should be enough to warm up the fans. The lead single of the album, Looking Up, gives us Elton’s optimistic, beefy piano, while soulful keys is the keyword for Tambourine. WCN is Elton and Bernie Taupin hunting their own greatness and the aim is to make a classic album while at a mature age. Taupin’s lyrics still measures up, although they lack the inspiring pioneering creativity of the old days. The band however rocks like there is no tomorrow and you can almost feel the great craic they must’ve been having in the studio. The album is pleasant and pleasant has obviously never made music history, but it doesn’t have to do that either. The night might be wonderful, and although not exactly very crazy, one thing that is certain is that Elton’s night is still young.

MEGHAN TRAINOR NO BY LINN THERESE HELDAL @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTLINN
As I have said before; when Meghan Trainor got her breakthrough she inspired some great controversy and confusion around her lyrics and style. People just couldn’t seem to agree whether she was an old-fashioned, sexist prude with a chastity belt that sends us back five decades when it comes to gender roles, or if she was an inspiring, positive feminist that applauds women with humorous and sassy lyrics. Well, in No lies the answer. It starts as your typical Meghan Trainor blueeyed and sweet modern doo-wop song, but only a few seconds in Trainor kicks it off with a feisty half-rap half-singing à la Nicki Minaj. This actually really suits her bubblegum voice, especially when she sings over the rapping. No is a deadly catchy, bold, RnB beat song, which screams nostalgia and it’s a clear throwback to the girl power of the late 90’s/early 2000’s. Even the single’s artwork and her look have a millennium feel over it - it’s all very Britney Spears. In the video she does a good job of distancing herself from the cuteness of the 50’s, and although she’s doing her very best to convince us, her attempt to be a sexy, sassy temptress is just not something we’re used to yet. The song is a warning to men about not coming over to talk to her and to take a hint. “If I want a man/ Then I’mma get a man/ But it’s never my priority!” sings Trainor and thereby the feminist anthem No puts a full stop to any discussion about her view on gender roles.

HAIR ASSESSMENT As the first InTallaght beauty guinea pig, I visited Style Club on Level 2 in The Square Towncentre Tallaght and spoke to Head Colour Specialist Leanne Shannon about the range. She discussed my hair needs and as I have quite fine hair she recommended the Pureology Pure Volume Shampoo (which smelled deliciously like a purifying charcoal facemark I have, essentially really cleansing!). The conditioner smelled deliciously like cocoa butter so I was very excited to be swishing my hair about smelling so good. TESTING ZONE The first time I used the shampoo it took a while to lather up, but then I remembered Leanne said to dilute the shampoo with water and so when my hair was much wetter, it lathered up amazingly! It was true that I only needed a tiny amount (which is helpfully measured on the lid of the bottle). My hair felt squeaky clean once rinsed, but not stripped like with some shampoos. Then came the conditioner, and as recommended, I only put it on the tips and then ran the excess
through the rest of my hair. After rinsing, it felt soft and shiny. Once I towel dried my hair I sprayed on a few squirts of the Pureology Colour Fanatic Multitasking Hair Beautifier and combed it through. I styled my hair straight as normal with my hairdryer and vent brush and the first thing I noticed was how soft and shiny my hair was, with no flyaways. It was bouncy and had lift at the roots (yay!) and most amazingly my highlights seemed to be more vibrant than ever. I have to confess that I did walk around swishing my hair and touching it all evening, but I didn’t care because it truly was fabulous! The more I use it the more I love it and I definitely think it’s making my colour last longer. I would absolutely recommend it, and pretty much do every time I get a compliment about my hair! There seem to be a lot of new phones released lately and the HTC 10 is the next one off the conveyor belt. The HTC 10 will be launched exclusively on the Three network in Ireland on May 5th and the company will be hoping for more success after the well-received HTC One M8 and M9. The phone can be bought in two capacities of 32GB and 64GB and HTC also give you three different colours to choose from: Carbon Grey, Glacial Silver and Topaz Gold. The HTC 10 comes with a 5.2 inch quad HD screen. The main camera on the phone has laser focus which can also video record in 4K. One of the interesting features of video recording on the phone is that you can capture images in slow motion at 720p HD and 120 frames per second. Battery life is always an important aspect when purchasing a new phone and the HTC 10 doesn’t disappoint in that

department with the phone able to last for up to two days when in normal use. This is because of the Boost+ which works intelligently to optimise the energy in the best possible way while you are using your apps. The HTC 10 comes with a fast charger included in the box which will give you 50% power in just 30 minutes of charging time. This has become a trademark of HTC who prefer to give you what you need to enjoy the phone rather than making you pay for expensive accessories after purchasing. One of the pros of HTC phones has been their amazing audio which the HTC 10 also has and this is where you get another accessory with the phone that other phone companies would make you pay extra for. The HTC 10 has Hi-Res Audio, that enables you to hear the improved tones that HTC has worked on because the provided headphones are of
the high-end quality, and not the cheap ones which consumers have become accustomed to. It is not all good news however for the HTC 10 as initial reports have the camera as not being that impressive although the design of the phone, brilliant audio and much improved battery life are major improvements over previous phones. The phone’s processor is the Snapdragon 820 which is the same one as what is in the LG G5 and a very fast processor. When you pair that with the 4GB of RAM and a minimum 32 GB of storage the performance of the phone by all accounts is very, very good. With no Irish price at the time of writing the phone is expected to retail at £569 in the UK, which is roughly €723. If you do bite the bullet and buy the HTC 10 you should not be disappointed with your choice.

Between April 11th and 14th the sixth annual Cinemacon took place at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. There was plenty of news and announcements made at the convention which also gives out awards for different categories.
The male star of the year was Jesse Eisenberg who was seen most recently in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice playing an unhinged Lex Luthor. Jack Huston received the award for Rising Star of the Year and is best known for playing Richard Harrow in the superb Boardwalk Empire. He will also be taking on the daunting task of trying to emulate the success of Charlton Heston when he takes on the role of Judah Ben-Hur in the upcoming epic Ben Hur. One of the worst kept secrets in Hollywood was that Ben Affleck would direct a standalone Batman movie along with donning the cape and cowl as Batman. Having impressed as the caped crusader in Dawn of Justice this is good news for Bat-fans, however before we see him in his own Batman film he brings his Dark Knight to life in the soon to be released Suicide Squad film. The big news came from James Cameron who announced

that there will be four sequels to the hugely popular Avatar film which was released back in 2009. All four movies will be shot concurrently and the first of the four sequels, Avatar 2 is scheduled for a 2018 release date. One of the more baffling announcements came from Napster cofounder Sean Parker who revealed that he plans to bring films to people’s living rooms the same day that they are released in the cinemas. The idea is that you buy a streaming box for approximately $150 and then you pay for a 48-hour rental fee of $50 per movie. This looks like a venture that is doomed to fail because people enjoy going to the cinema for the massive screens and brilliant surround sound that you just can’t quite match at home, no matter how loud you play the film. In some of the other big news that was confirmed at Cinemacon was that Ryan Reynolds would reprise his role as Deadpool. Following on from the shambles that he made of Deadpool in X-Men Origins Wolverine, and the atrocious Green Lantern, Reynolds redeemed himself with his take on the R-rated character this year. Universal surprised people with the announcement that Dr Seuss will once again grace the big screen this time in an animated version of How The Grinch Stole Christmas. The film is set for a release in 2017 and Sherlock Holmes himself Benedict Cumberbatch will be voicing the menacing character. Cinemacon continues to grow and although it isn’t one of the biggest conventions of the year by any stretch of the imagination it still throws out a few surprises and for that alone it is always worth checking up on.

Homefront: The Revolution is a soon-to-be released open world first-person shooter video game developed by Dambuster Studios and published by Deep Silver. Homefront: The Revolution is the sequel to the 2011 video game Homefront which was met with poor to mixed reviews. However, since then there have been some changes, most notably that The Revolution has different publishers and developers to Homefront and that The Revolution will be an open world video game. The story mode is set in 2029, two years after the events of the original game and will follow Ethan ‘Birdy’ Brady and the new resistance who will attempt to take back Philadelphia. The Greater Korean Republic have control of many American states with Philadelphia being their stronghold in the U.S. Philadelphia is split into three different districts, the Green zone, Yellow zone and Red zone.

The Green zone is where the Korean People’s Army (KPA) is at its strongest and where most of the amenities like running water and a stable power supply are, this also makes it an area where the Resistance is comfortable. The Yellow zone is an overpopulated Ghetto where the majority of the population live which makes it uncomfortable for the Resistance because of the cluttered streets, frequent patrols and an unreliable power and water supply. The Red zone is a forbidden zone by the KPA because the buildings are damaged and surrounded by barren land. This is where the resistance is at its strongest because it is where they are based, however the KPA still have a strong presence in the area making it dangerous. The multiplayer is different in Homefront: The Revolution, with a four player co-op replacing the competitive multiplayer mode from the original. It is separate from the main campaign with its own story, characters, classes, and perks. Homefront: The Revolution is due out on May 20th for the PS4, Xbox One and PC. The game will be retailing at €64.99 in Smyths, €69.99 in HMV and €74.99 in Gamestop.

DOOM is an upcoming firstperson shooter video game which is being developed by id Software and produced by Bethesda Softworks. This will be the fourth main game in the series which has also produced many spinoffs and addons since the original DOOM was released in 1993. Fans of the series will know that this game has been a long time coming and was originally known as DOOM 4, however during the development the game was scrapped and restarted to what we are getting now. DOOM will feature both single player and multiplayer modes with the campaign mode expected to be 13 hours long following comments from a developer working at id Sofware. The background of the campaign mode is that you are on the Union Aerospace Corporations’ research facility on Mars which is taken over by powerful demons. Being the only
DOOM Marine you are activated with one task, kill them all. The campaign mode will feature a massive arsenal of weapons which can be switched throughout the game with many of the classic weapons and enemies from other games available. The super shotgun and BFG 9000 will be available to use in DOOM, for fans of the gory elements of sci-fi games a chainsaw can be used to cut the demons in half! Revenant, Mancubus and Cyberdemon are some of the enemies in DOOM. The game wants you to jump into the action to kill demons with massive guns whilst moving through the game putting an emphasis on picking up health and armour packs instead of recovering and letting your health regenerate. The multiplayer will have various different game modes such as Four-Player-Deathmatch, Domination, Warpath, Freeze Tag and Clan Arena. DOOM is set for a May 13th release on the PS4, Xbox One and PC, the game is set at a price of

Are you looking for something stylish, affordable and also reliable? Well the Ford Fiesta is something worth adding to your list of cars to test drive this summer. Being one of the best-selling cars in Ireland it’s hard to find any fault with this model. From first glance you will be won over and as a lover of the Mini Cooper I have to say Ford have done a fantastic job with keeping themselves within that same market and at a fraction of the price. The face of the car is for me by far the most striking, the grille looks as though it has been lifted straight from an Aston Martin. Hard to believe I know but the centre feature sits in well with the compact design. The interior of the Fiesta isn’t as dynamic however but it is fresh and modern. The shiny black trim extends down from the radio to the gear stick. There is an array of storage space inside but unfortunately practicality isn’t as great further back for passengers. The sloping roofline means if you have tall passengers they may find the back seat a bit of a squeeze with head room a little bit tight. The boot space isn’t too big either but do people buying one of these cars really expect a fantastic sized boot? The drive itself is exactly what you would expect from any of Ford’s range and it can only be described as excellent. The car steering is nice and light and you also have great visibility on the road and the small dimensions mean it is easy to navigate while out and about. The new Ford Fiesta has a starting price of €14,050 so pop online to ford.ie to find the closest dealership to you and take one for a test drive. Although the compact nature of this car may not be everyone’s cup of tea the way this car drives in my opinion makes it the best small car you can buy.

CECELIA AHERN FLAWED BY GENNA PATTERSON @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGENNA
The latest Cecelia Ahern novel came out in March, but it isn’t at all what you’d expect it to be because she has forayed into Young Adult (YA) fiction. Last December we interviewed Cecelia who said it was not a planned move into the genre at all, but rather just a story she wanted to write. She said, “The thing with me is that I don’t necessarily plan what genre or what market. I don’t think in those terms, it’s not in my creative head, you know it’s not my world. It’s more the publishers think about that side of things. I just think of stories and whatever stories come into my mind.” Whatever the reasoning behind the book, I think it is set to become a hugely popular book series. Honing in on a dystopian world as many YA books do, it tells the story of Celestine North who lives the perfect life. Her parents are perfect, her boyfriend Art is perfect and all is well… until Celestine makes a mistake

by helping someone. You see in her world there are people marked as Flawed, those who made poor moral decisions. Even normal criminals who break the law are less despised and looked down on by society. If someone is thought to be Flawed they are brought before a council and tried before three judges and anyone who is found to be Flawed is branded with a large F on a part of their body. Art’s father just so happens to be one such judge and so when Celestine makes her mistake, her whole life falls apart and her relationship with Art is destroyed. As with many YA books, Celestine is a strong female protagonist, or rather becomes one. In the beginning she is consumed with her looks and presenting the best version of herself to the world, but as her life changes she begins to question her society’s rules and soon she searches for allies and answers. It was really intriguing to see her character development throughout the book and you can’t help but root for her. As the book moves along we begin to see that not everything or everyone is as presented initially and some are in fact plotting against the government to change society once and for all. Flawed is definitely a page-turner even for me, a woman in my 30s!
This definitely did not feel like a usual Cecelia Ahern book and while her usual fans may find it difficult to get into I’m certain fans of other YA books such as the Hunger Games series, Louise O’Neill’s Only Ever Yours or The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood will love it. Additionally the book was optioned by Warner Bros and Wendy Finerman Productions so it will likely be made into a movie or TV series further boosting its popularity. Hopefully though this isn’t a totally permanent move for Ahern as I quite enjoy her regular novels and would like to read more of them. If she can continue to do both I have no doubt that this series will catapult her even further beyond her already bestselling author status and possibly to become one of the richest people in Ireland (if she isn’t already)!

Spoken Words in Dublin BY EOGHAN CONNAUGHTON The spoken word is a thing of power and beauty. Within the capable minds of the those who dare to dream lies a wealth of inspiration for the brilliant and the mad. Far beyond what one would imagine a poetry night to be having completed the English Leaving Certificate, the experience is an enjoyable journey into the unknown and leaves one hungry for more. Words crafted beautifully without any pretentious pattern around the whims and wit of minds that resonate with our colourful lyrical heritage. Within this atmosphere a stage or a corner (or a table for that matter) becomes an open canvas for a catalogue of ideas and a myriad of rhythms that will leave one stuck. Dublin is brimming with spoken word poetry nights, if you know where to find them and most are free. Requiring only an open mind and perhaps a tolerance for obscenity, these two at hand create a joyous playground of possibilities. This space of freedom allows for lyrical expression which will always surprise and may leave you feeling that this unlikely young man in the corner opening his mind up through his Dublin dialect, truly is a genius. My first experience with spoken word began in November 2014, in the small and humble basement of the International Bar. The

Monday Night Echo was renowned, of course this was beyond my appreciation at the time but I quickly discovered that this small space was ideal for such a venture. It didn’t take long to be taken aback, not so much by the variety of styles but rather by the canvas of iridescent expression. In the basement of the International Bar on Exchequer Street one can still sample the best of what the city has to offer on Mondays nights at Circle Sessions which kick off at 8pm. The venue has seen playwrights, artists, political figures and even has a mention in James Joyce’s Ulysses- frankly I see no better place for a cocktail of spoken word, storytelling, performance and music which is sure to give you a taste for curiosity, leaving you wondering what else is to be had. There are no mealy-mouthed mumblings and few modest thoughts as within the crucible of Dublin’s spoken word culture where a high standard has been set. Limited only by those who set a limit and unbeknownst to them, is destined to be defiedthe only factors are time and place. Words are powerful instruments, they are the bridges for sharing ideas and the fertiliser for the manifestation of movements. In a world so rampant of the ridiculous and an Ireland on the cusp of the perpetual unknown there are plenty of words that can be said and those that are being said are churning hearts and minds from the pubs and cafes of the capital. Plunge into this culture and find yourself soaked in colour and inspiration. These molotov mouths will ignite a fire in your heart and may have you spitting fire. CAROLANN’S COLUMN Local author Carolann Copland gives us the rundown of the process behind the inaugural Carousel Aware Indie Book Awards. Each month she’ll provide insight of the stages of organisation, right up until the awards on October 26th. My books arrived. A shiver ran along my fingers, up my arms and right through me. My book. I was holding my book in my hands. I had imagined how that might feel so many times; seeing my name on the cover; opening the pages on a random chapter and remembering exactly where and when it was that I wrote those scenes. No amount of words on an A4 sheet of paper or text on a computer screen can compete with the sight of my own words wrapped like a present between the covers of a book. The first thing I did was to go running to the Mammy. ‘Look, Mam. Here you are. Will I sign it for you?’ She’s emotional but she doesn’t show too much. A huge hug. ‘Congratulations, love. That’s wonderful!’ The real joy came in passing the conservatory later and seeing her; my Mam, the book worm, curled up in her favourite chair; cigarette on one side, coffee on the other, reading my book. She was my first reader when I was seven and I knew she would be my greatest critic. It was make or break time. She loved it. Then the real work began. Getting the book into shops as a self-published author is a hard slog. Getting a wholesaler such as Argosy to take you on is almost impossible. Independent
book shops are often supportive but getting as far as the likes of Easons or Dubray Books is only achieved through constant battling. When I finally got there; when the book was on the shelves of book shops, I remember watching the expression on a possible reader’s face as they turned over my book in their hands, nodded and purchased. Out it went. At last. It was a tough journey, but seeing it being bought by real readers (who weren’t your Mammy) made it worth it. Imagine if you didn’t have to go through all the hard slog though. What if your self published book was so good, that it won an award and ended up being snapped up by all the book shops and wholesalers? Imagine if your book won an award that captured the attention of the media and got them reviewing and talking about you on radio and in newspapers. Can you hear the sound of the Irish literary
community chatting about you and your book? Do you like the sound of that? Then go on… Put a CAP on it! After much persuasion, we have decided to extend the submission date for The Carousel Awards for Independent Authors to the May 31st. As it’s the first year of the awards, (the first of many years to come…) we are giving self published authors the chance to get their entries in on time. We have been extremely busy here at IT Tallaght Students’ Union since our last article. The next morning after ITT SU 2016/2017 election results; Shauna and Aisling and I were off to Nanjing to visit Nanjing Tech University. The aim of our visit was to speak with the students in the University about college life and Irish culture. The purpose of our trip was to promote our college to the students as we have connections with Nanjing Tech University and many students come to study here each year. We also met with the Students’ Union of the University to discuss our roles and we spoke about the differences between how we work. We were in Nanjing for six days and we took a trip to Shanghai for one day. Getting to experience Chinese culture and represent our college was an amazing opportunity and we loved getting to meet so many students. We returned from China on Saturday March 19th and we then attended the Union of Students in Ireland annual Congress from Monday March 21st to Thursday March 24th. This was held in County Clare and ITT SU was represented on a national level by six representatives. While the students were on their Easter break, we were busy working with the careers officer in the college to organise the first ever Skills & Opportunities week. This took place from April 4th to 7th and it went down well with the students as an informative week that has never been done before. We had a lot of workshops which covered topics such as LinkedIn and

THE PURPOSE OF OUR TRIP WAS TO PROMOTE OUR COLLEGE TO THE STUDENTS AS WE HAVE CONNECTIONS WITH NANJING TECH UNIVERSITY AND MANY STUDENTS COME TO STUDY HERE EACH YEAR Interview Skills. We also had Grad Ireland on campus and drop in CV clinics. The Board of Irish College Societies Awards took place on April 14th in Limerick. We had a number of societies and representatives up for awards. The students nominated were from the Radio Society, Airsoft Society, Cumann Gaelach Society, Rainbow Society and Engineering Society respectively. We are absolutely delighted to announce that we had five winners at the awards this year. The Radio Society won ‘Best Society’ and ‘Best Event in Ireland’ while their Chairperson Emma Mullan won ‘Best Individual’ at the awards. Our Cumann Gaelach Society won ‘Best New Society 2016’ and Valentina Milicic from the Archery Club won ‘Best Fresher of the Year’. This is an amazing achievement for IT Tallaght and

This week is also our Cumann Gaelach’s Seachtain na Gaeilge and they will finish off the week on Friday 22nd with their Bal na nGael. This will take place in the Red Cow and it looks to be a great evening with dinner and entertainment from Seo Linn. Well done to our Boxing Club on two medals at the Varsities in the National Stadium. Accounting Fresher Jacob Marrar (Novice 67kg) won gold and Mechanical Engineering Fresher Peter Fabian won silver in the intermediate 71kg. IT Tallaght Mens Basketball team secured the Division 2 league title with a 75-65 win over UCC in the National Basketball Arena. This was their third title in 12 years having previously won in 2004 and 2009. This year’s team was captained by Ben Arulogun who is a third year accounting and finance student. Well done to Liam Guinan on receiving the MVP award. On behalf of ITT SU I would like to say congratulations to the team on this great achievement.

100 NEW JOBS ANNOUNCED FOR DUBLIN BY PADRAIG CONLON Search Optics, a US Digital Marketing company, plans to create 100 new roles over the next two years through the establishment of its EMEA headquarters in the capital. The company currently employs 15 people in Ireland. The firm, whose Dublin HQ had opened on Fumbally Square, Dublin 8, provides an integrated digital marketing platform to many of the world’s leading blue chip companies and the new jobs will be across a range of different digital marketing disciplines. The company say they will be seeking both new graduates and existing industry professionals. Kerry native Brendan O’Brien has recently been appointed as Search Optics’ Chief Strategy Officer and EMEA President and he said Ireland’s business orientated attitude was a big reason why the company have decided to base their HQ in Dublin. He said: “It’s a very easy place to do business. We’re in a really good timezone, we’ve got a sort of culture

OFFERS OF UP TO €1BN EXPECTED FOR BLANCHARDSTOWN CENTRE BY RACHEL LYNCH Offers in the region of €1bn are expected for Blanchardstown Centre. With three contenders remaining in the race and looking to secure the sale of the shopping centre the sellers Green Property has called for final bids. The shopping centre opened back in 1996 and is situated on 85 acres, and includes 1.25 million square feet of retail and retail warehousing. A further 250,000sq ft is made up of offices, a cinema, theatre, apartments and a Crowne Plaza hotel.
Developer Joe O’Reilly’s Chartered Land, backed by capital from Morgan Stanley, US investment group Blackstone and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board are final bidders for the centre, where Dunnes Stores, Penneys, Debenhams and Marks & Spencer are the anchor tenants. It was reported that there is scope for development of a further 1.6 million sq ft of retail, office, leisure facilities and apartments under a master development plan for the site with planning consent for a 272,000 sq ft extension to the main centre and underground car parking has already been granted. It is understood that Mr Vernon owns over 60% of the company behind the centre, with fellow directors Jim McKenna, Mark Munro and Paul Culhane also major shareholders. The shopping centre has claimed to generate a rent roll of almost €50 million each year with an annual footfall of 16 million.
SLACK TO HIRE 80 NEW STAFF IN DUBLIN BY GENNA PATTERSON Good news for those working in customer experience and account management; Slack has announced that they will hire 80 new staff over the next two years. This means the company will have 180 employees by 2018. Slack is an American workplace messaging platform that moved to Dublin just last May and hired 100 people. The company, based in the city centre, will also move to a new 29,000 square foot office space at One Park Place, Dublin 1 to accommodate the extra staff. Slack claims to be “Team communication for the 21st century”, and must be doing
well if they are hiring and expanding so quickly! James Sherrett, Slack’s Dublin-based senior manager of accounts told RTÉ: “Our user base grew tenfold last year and we’re seeing strong demand across all industries and from businesses of all sizes, for more efficient and effective team communications.” The company is valued at $3.8 billion and has over 430 employees around the world in offices based in San Francisco, Vancouver and Melbourne.

New car buying slowed a little last month but was still up 14% on last year, new official figures show. It is predicted that the 2016 year will see up to 165,000 new registrations on the road.

REA Q1 AVERAGE HOUSE PRICE SURVEY
REA recently published their Q1 Average House Price Survey. Read on to see how the Irish market continues to be affected by mortgage restrictions from the Central Bank. A new wave of house buyers are prepared to commute for over an hour to secure properties at the right price, according to a national survey carried out by Real Estate Alliance. The Q1 REA Average House Price Survey has revealed price rises in outer commuter ring locations such as Laois and Offaly are being driven by Dublin-based first-time buyers being forced further out from the capital by the Central Bank’s deposit rules. REA also report seeing a decrease in the amount of first-time buyers between the ages of 25-40 attending viewings in the Dublin housing market in the first quarter of 2016. The REA Average House Price Survey concentrates on the sale price of Ireland’s typical stock home, the three-bed semi, giving an up-to-date picture of the property market in towns and cities countrywide.

The average three-bed semi nationally now costs €191,194, a rise of €2,824 (1.5%) on the figure to the end of December. The average price of a three-bed semi in Dublin City and County has risen by 0.6% from €332,000 to €334,000 in the first three months of the year. This activity is driven in part by new building activity in the north of the county and pockets of south Dublin, which have seen the return of the cash buyer to the market. The proportion of cash buyers in the Dublin market has risen for the first time in two years, from 33% to 36% over the past three months, with some areas such as Dublin 6 and Dun Laoghaire registering a 25% increase in cash purchasers over the past three months. The Central Bank’s deposit rules and the lack of suitable supply are continuing to stagnate the market for mortgage buyers in the capital and commuter areas.
While prices have risen slightly by €2,706 (+1.31%) to €209,559 in the commuter counties and main cities such as Cork and Galway, these rises are confined to the few towns that have new developments on the market. The biggest growth has been in towns in the rest of the country where prices have risen by 9.58% in the past year, and 2.59% since December, with the average three bed semi increasing from €122,161 to €125,321. However, REA agents around the country state that many local rises are now being caused by lack of stock driving up prices. REA chairman Michael O’Connor commented: “We are seeing a marked absence of the 25-40 year olds at viewings in the capital over the past few months as, under the current Central Bank restrictions, they are finding it impossible to raise the deposits needed to purchase houses over the €220,000 limit”. “Conversely, we are seeing growth in commuter interest in counties previously considered at the edge of the daily travelling limits such as Laois (€125,000 +4.17%) and Offaly (€140,000 +3.7%), simply because the price is right. “Louth is the perfect example of this trend in commuter migration. Drogheda prices remained static at €197,500 in Q1 while commuter interest caused prices to rise by €10,000 to €135,000 in Dundalk, which is 35km further away from Dublin but over €60,000 cheaper on average. Although supply is extremely limited, suitable properties are now being bought in these areas by buyers who are prepared to travel over an hour to work in the capital. “Lack of supply of suitable housing is the paramount issue nationwide, and while we have had rises in many areas, they are primarily driven by buyer competition for low supply.” With prices rising by 5.1%, and viewings up substantially, Limerick was Ireland’s fastest growing city in Q1, with three bed semis increasing by €8,000 to their current level of €165,000. Growth continued in Cork city (+1.75%) and Waterford (+1.61%), while the market in Galway remained static in Q1, with no new developments expected in the Connacht capital until 2017.

HOW TO RESTART YOUR FITNESS REGIME Are you looking to get fitter, lose weight or just kick-start your fitness routine? Well these little tips and tricks might be all the help you need. BY LEANNE MOORE PERSONAL TRAINER AT FIT4LESS TALLAGHT AND ONLINE COACH
1: WRITE OUT YOUR GOALS Take a few minutes, sit down and write out your goals. You can even type them out and print them up. Make it final. Aim for a short term goal (say seven days) and a long term goal (say six weeks). Stick it someplace you will see it and be reminded of it. There is one thing I know when it comes to goals – they HAVE to be specific. There’s no point halfcommitting to something and the best way to avoid that is to pinpoint precisely what it is you want to achieve and go for it with gusto. If your goal is to increase your fitness - do a fitness test at your local gym and work to

improve your time. If your goal is weight loss - aim to lose 1-2bs a week for the next few weeks. Your goal will be yours so think it through, get some advice if you need to and stick to it.
2: PREP YOUR FOOD Fitness and body goals are not just about what you do with your body but also about what you feed it. The most important element of any fitness regime is a good food plan to support it. And the key to eating well is preparation. Give yourself time (a half an hour in the morning or the evening) to prepare your food for the day. Don’t be caught short having to depend on whatever “healthy” option you can grab on the go. Organise yourself and meet your goals.
3: KEEP A FOOD & FITNESS DIARY This is one little trick I recommend to all my new clients. If you are returning to a fitness programme - write down and track your workouts and meals so that you are aware of everything you are eating each day. Sometimes just seeing it there in black and white will be all the motivation you need.
4: TRY SOMETHING NEW If you are returning to exercise after a period of time - my biggest tip would be to try something new. Don’t just settle to return to the same routine you tried and fell away from. At Fit4Less we have over 35 classes a week on the schedule. Pencil classes in like meetings in your diary and keep them.
Don’t cancel on yourself. Book an assessment with a gym instructor or even look into Personal Training so you’ve some help staying on track.
5: FIND A TRAINING BUDDY Another little motivational tip is to find a workout partner. That way you can both motivate one another. Chances are if one of you is lacking a little motivation - the other will make up for it. Work out together and push each other on. Do challenges, compete against one another and spur each other on.
6: MAKE A PLAYLIST It’s a simple little trick but very effective! Make a gym playlist and treat yourself to one song a week! It’s builds up fast and can be the most motivating tools you can have when working out. Music is powerful! It can literally change your mood.
7: REWARD YOURSELF Keep a rewards jar and pop in a euro for every workout you complete. That way at the end of the month/two months you’ll have (hopefully) notched up enough to treat yourself to something nice, be it a new top, some new gym gear or even the ultimate cheat meal! Give these little tips a go and kickstart your fitness routine today!
LEANNE’S RECIPE OF THE MONTH: COURGETTI BOLOGNESE WHAT YOU NEED: Courgettes spirallized Carrots spirallized Turkey Mince Tin of Tomatoes Tomato Puree Garlic (2-3 cloves depending on preference) Onion Pepper Coconut Oil
WHAT TO DO:
1. Fry minced garlic in coconut oil on a medium heat. 2. Add turkey mince and cook till browned. 3. Chop pepper and onion finely and add to mince, stirring to cook through. 4. Add tin of tomatoes and 2-3 tablespoons of tomato puree – stir well. 5. Reduce heat and allow to simmer for 10 mins. 6. Meanwhile spiralize your carrots and courgette if not already pre-bought that way. 7. Place in a non-stick pot or pan at a low heat and toss gently every minute or so for 5-8 minutes. 8. Serve courgette and carrot as your “pasta” with your bolognese on top.

In one of the most surprising results of the season so far the Supersaints beat Dundalk one-nil to progress to the next round of the EA Sports Cup. The Saints will make the short trip on the DART to Bray to the Carlisle Grounds. Cork will host Derry and Limerick will play host to Galway United. Undoubtedly the tie of the round takes place in Tolka Park when Shelbourne host Shamrock Rovers. Shels who are fifth in the first division will be hoping to pull off the surprise of the round when former manager Pat Fenlon brings the Hoops to Tolka with the semifinals at stake. SPORTS NEWS 5 THINGS THE NEXT CELTIC MANAGER MUST ACHIEVE BY ED LAM Ronny Deila will leave Celtic at the end of the season, meaning the Hoops are on the hunt for the 18th manager in their history. Here are key issues the new man in charge will have to address if he is to make a success of himself at Parkhead.
1. SEAL A CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SPOT Do this in his first few weeks in the job and Deila’s replacement will find he has made life a whole lot easier for himself. The Norwegian failed to cash in on Rangers’ financial implosion by leading his side to the big-money group stages, despite having three goes at qualifying for Europe’s premier competition. That allowed £30million of potential revenue to slip through the club’s fingers – a sum which would have put them out of sight upon the Gers’ top flight return. Deila still has to clinch this year’s title but with the Light Blues back in the Premiership next year, a Champions League windfall would go a long way to ensuring Celtic remain on top.
2. REBALANCE THE SQUAD The make-up of Deila’s playing staff is all wrong. Too big and stacked in the wrong areas, it left the 40-year-old looking like he had no idea what his strongest line-up was. While short on options at the back and with only one credible striking option in 37-goal Leigh Griffiths, the outgoing boss has 17 midfielders to choose from – plus another five out on loan at other clubs. Kris Commons is arguably the most talented individual in the entire Celtic squad but was never trusted by Deila. The boss could have made a statement and moved the former Scotland forward on. Instead the club allowed him to hang around and sulk after handing him a fresh two-year deal. The next manager

will have to quickly strip out the dead wood and beef up the defence and forward areas.
3. MAKE BETTER USE OF RESOURCES One of the main reasons Deila was hired by chief executive Peter Lawwell was because of his track record of bringing through youngsters such as Martin Odegaard at former club Stromsgodset. He was expected to polish up the raw talent plucked out by Celtic’s scouts from around the world but in the end found himself relying on many of predecessor Neil Lennon’s signings as his own buys failed. Almost £4million was wasted on flops Stefan Scepovic and Nadir Ciftci, with more spent on the likes of Gary MackaySteven, Stuart Armstrong, Dedryck Boyata, Scott Allan and Ryan Christie who have either disappointed so far or been frozen out. Whoever comes in next must produce a much better success rate in the transfer market.
4. RECONNECT WITH THE FANS Deila certainly knew how to whip the passionate Celtic faithful into a frenzy with the ‘Ronny Roar’, but that did not disguise the fact that many Hoops supporters have grown disillusioned with
the direction their club has been going in recent years. The average gate at Parkhead this year is 44,321 – meaning every time the Hoops run out at home there have been around 16,000 empty seats. When Lennon took over in 2010, he promised to restore the “thunder” to Celtic Park – the next incumbent needs to repeat the trick.
5. HOLD OFF RANGERS’ RESURGENCE The 64,000-dollar question over the last four years has been just what state will the Ibrox club be in when they finally make their return to the top flight. April 17th’s Old Firm victory at Hampden gave the clearest answer yet. In the space of 10 months, Mark Warburton has developed a dynamic squad capable of producing spellbinding football. The Englishman insists there is still a gap to be bridged if his side are to challenge the Hoops’ dominance, but after the Light Blues passed their old foes off the Hampden pitch at the weekend, that appears to be an overly cautious statement. The first derby clash will be an important marker for the season ahead and a victory for Celtic’s new manager might slow down some of the momentum Rangers are building.
ALL-IRELAND KICKBOXING COMPETITION BY GENNA PATTERSON The Tallaght Martial Arts team competed in the All Ireland Kickboxing Competition round 2 at the Amenities Sports Centre in Leixlip on Sunday 24th April 2016. I’ve known this announcement was coming for a week or more now and it has only felt worse the more I have thought about it. I am forced to retire from MMA. I was born with a factor missing in my blood called Factor XIII. I never disclosed it then or now, it came to the UFC’s attention from a third party and I can no longer pass the medical requirements to compete, only one in five million people are diagnosed so I knew that it was so rare, organisations wouldn’t understand or take the chance with me as I have found out now, I never explained in full to John or my team the actual risks caused, I didn’t think there was excess risk. It is a disorder that is only dangerous for me not my opponents. I really did see MMA

as the way to have a real shot at a life for myself and my family and it turns out I was right. I have mixed emotions about it: Proud because I always wore my heart on my sleeve, stood my ground, never cheated, never turned away from diversity or challenges and always strived to inspire and encourage people from all backgrounds. Sad because I will never make that walk again, under those lights, feeling all those uncomfortable yet life giving feelings as they count and you hear “walk, walk, walk”, staring into a camera, knowing millions are watching but most importantly the Irish are watching. I am also disappointed because people who have cheated within the sport due to PEDs etc putting their opponents in extra danger will fight again, whereas for me it’s a genetic one in five million disorder that stops me dead in my tracks.
THIS JOURNEY HAS MADE ME THE MAN I AM TODAY I really feel I was only turning the corner in my fight career and I still have so much more to give! Thanks to all of my team over the past nine years at SBG. My coach John who backed me regardless when I had nothing but effort to offer him in payment, it’s been an incredible journey for this council kid! To all the Irish people and people of my home town of Tallaght who have always caught my falls and helped me back to my feet, I am forever grateful to those people who have backed me through thick and thin. This journey has made me the man I am today.

YOUNG HOOPS BY PADRAIG CONLON @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG
Both the Rovers Under 19’s and Under 17’s have made encouraging starts to their respective seasons. Managers Marc Kenny (19’s) and Aidan Price (17’s) have assembled squads brimming with talented young players and it is hoped both will be challenging for honours come the end of the season. The two young Hoops teams have already been involved in some excellent matches early in the season so if anyone gets a chance please go along and give these lads your support as they really deserve it.
UNDER 17’S This year’s squad are defending the league crown that was won in such dramatic fashion last December but they had a tough start to the current campaign when they went down 3-2 at home to UCD in the AUL. They bounced back from that early set back to record an excellent 3-2 away win against Wexford Youths. A fine first half display saw the visitors race into a two goal lead courtesy of a Shane Stokes free kick and a Sean Callan header right on the half time whistle. Wexford pulled one

back from the penalty spot before Dean Dillon restored the young Hoops two goal advantage. The hosts pulled a goal back in the last minute of normal time to set up a nervy final few moments but Rovers held on to record their first win of the season. Next up for Rovers was a home game with Mervue United and it looked like it was going to be an uphill struggle when centre back Sean Callan was harshly given a red card after only 15 minutes. The home side’s task got even harder on the stroke of half time when Mervue took the lead against the run of play. The concession of that goal seemed to galvanise Rovers in the second half and they deservedly drew level in the 62nd minute when Shane Stokes curled a beautiful free kick beyond the Mervue keeper and into the back of the net. The victory was completed in the 84th minute when Hoops skipper Harry Cornally lashed home a fine strike to give Rovers all three points. The Hoops headed south to Cobh full of confidence after their back-to-back wins and two well-taken free kicks by Richie English and Shane Stokes respectively gave them a 2-0 win which wasn’t as comfortable as the scoreline would suggest. Cobh showed great fighting spirit in the second half and Ben Murray in the Rovers goal was called upon on quite a few occasions to make some great
saves to keep the hosts out. The Under 17’s final game in April saw them make another long trip south this time to play the Kerry League in Tralee and another excellent performance saw them win 4-1 to record their forth win on the bounce. Dean Dillion (2), Shane Stokes and Harry Cornally were the goal scoring heroes in what was an all round great team performance.
UNDER 19S Marc Kenny’s lads got the season off to a flyer with a 1-0 win at home to Cobh Ramblers. It was the U17’s top scorer from last season Aaron Dobbs who scored the only goal getting on the end of a great cross by Eoghan Morgan, another member of the 17’s league winning team. Their following match was away to Galway and they had to be satisfied with a point after a very tight 0-0 draw with chances at an absolute premium. Cabinteely were the visitors in the next round of fixtures with Rovers recording a 1-0 win courtesy of a goal from James Doona via a cross from Sean Broderick. The trip to Wexford Youths in round four saw Rovers race into an early lead when Shane Hanney scored off a fine cross from Conor Gleeson. When Sean Boyd doubled their advantage it looked like a rout could be on the cards but in fairness to the hosts they pushed on in the second half and were unlucky not to at least pull a
goal back after hitting both cross bar and post. Following that near miss the young Hoops wrapped up the match when Boyd then got his second goal with a powerful strike. In the next game the Under 19’s produced what has probably been their best performance of the season so far in their home clash with UCD. The Students took the lead in the 17th minute and looked comfortable for most of the opening half defending their lead. Rovers looked a different side in the second half and following a few near misses they finally got a deserved equaliser in the 71st minute when substitute Aaron Dobbs finished from close range from a Hamilton free kick via an intervention from Sean Boyd! The game could have gone either way in the closing quarter before Rovers claimed all three points in the 85th minute when Dobbs found himself in on goal. His initial shot was saved by UCD keeper Kearns but rebounded back to him and he picked out Sean Boyd who tapped the ball over the line for the games winning goal. As well as the great start to the season there was also further good news for the squad when Shane Hanney and Trevor Clarke were both selected for the Ireland U18’s for a behind closed doors friendly against England Under 18’s at the end of March.

SHAMROCK ROVERS 2 V GALWAY 0 TALLAGHT STADIUM APRIL 1ST Following the home defeat to St Pats in their previous game, The Hoops got the month off to a positive start with a good win against an in form Galway United. Rovers made a great start to the match and almost opened the scoring when Pat Cregg flicked on a Simon Madden cross but his effort went wide. A minute later Gavin Brennan headed wide from a free kick and already the visitors defence knew they were in for a busy night. The home crowd were on their feet very shortly after that miss however when Brandon Miele cut inside brilliantly and rifled home a fine effort from 20 yards out to break the Galway resistance. The Hoops continued to look lively going forward but the visitors created chances of their own in what was a very open first half. Just before half time Brandon Miele picked out Mikey Drennan with a cross which the striker somehow managed to head wide from all of six yards out. It looked like that miss was going to prove very costly when Galway went straight down the other

end and almost drew level but Barry Murphy, who was making his 200th appearance league for Rovers, pulled off a good save to deny them an equaliser. The visitors were unlucky not to draw level on the hour mark when a header from Gary Shanahan hit the cross bar with Murphy beaten and substitute Ruairi Keating spurned an even better chance with 12 minutes to go. Chances were at such a premium for The Hoops in the second half that Miele was forced to try and beat Horgan with a speculative shot from a long way out inside the last 10 before they made sure of the points when substitute Trevor Clarke pounced on an error to finish well and for his first ever senior goal.
DERRY CITY 3 SHAMROCK ROVERS 0 BRANDYWELL APRIL 8TH Rovers got off to the worst possible start when they went a goal down after only two minutes and things never really improved from there in what was a very poor performance overall. The home side continued to carve Rovers apart with ease in what
was turning out to be a horror show for the travelling Hoops faithful and it was no surprise when Derry went 2-0 up through a header from Harry Monaghan. The Hoops came out for the second half looking like they had the managers words ringing in their ears as they attempted to find a way back into the game and they almost did when Blanchard was close to being presented with an open goal before Derry managed to get the ball away. The game as contest was over in the 58th minute when Derry got their third as Patterson found the net from a penalty after he’d been fouled by David Webster. It wasn’t just the 3-0 scoreline that caused concern, speaking after the game gaffer Pat Fenlon didn’t hold back. “We just didn’t show enough guts and enough character, simple as that,” he said. “Derry out muscled us, out fought us, were first to every ball and we didn’t show enough to be able to deal with that. That’s one thing that should be given in any team.”

The Hoops made the trip to Dalymount without a win in the derby since March 2014 and the opening exchanges here gave no indication of the goal glut that was to materialise. It was the home side who looked the livelier early on and Akinade might have put them ahead after an error by David Webster but Simon Madden made an excellent block to prevent a goal. As Rovers settled into the game Drennan came close with their first chance when he cut in from the right and unleashed a shot which Delaney saved. Right on half time Simon Madden was fouled on the Bohs goal line and Killian Brennan played the resultant free kick short to Drennan who had a shot. His
effort was deflected away from the goal only to pop up nicely for Hoops skipper Gary McCabe who smashed it through a packed penalty area and into the back of the Bohs net. The second half was only a few minutes old when Miele doubled Rovers lead after a counter attack to send the travelling Hoops fans into raptures. Brando got his second shot of the night on the 73rd minute when he ran on to a McCabe pass before slotting the ball past the advancing Delany. But the best was saved for last as Gavin Brennan rounded off a wonderful night for The Hoops with a goal that was the pick of the bunch. Substitute Gareth McCaffrey laid the ball off to him outside the Bohs penalty area and without taking a touch he unleashed a beautiful left footed curling shot which flew into the top corner to round off a wonderful derby win in fine style and give The Hoops their biggest league win over their hated rivals in 52 years.
SHAMROCK ROVERS 0 DUNDALK 2 TALLAGHT STADIUM APRIL 22ND Confidence was high when back to back champions Dundalk came to town. After the rout of Bohs home fans had every reason to believe that The Hoops could put the Louth men to the sword and in the opening period of the game it looked like this confidence was well founded. Rovers dominated the possession in the opening 15 minutes without creating any clear cut chances however. When Dundalk won a throw near the Rovers penalty area in the 16th minute there didn’t look to be too much cause for alarm. With the Rovers defence momentarily switching off Sean
Gannon and Ronan Finn played a one two off the throw before passing to Darren Meenan whose cross was deflected into his own goal by David Webster to give the visitors the lead with their first real attack. Rovers hopes of getting anything out of the game were severely diminished with the sending off of skipper Gary McCabe following a challenge on ex-Hoops Stephen O’Donnell which the ref deemed high and dangerous. The second half had barely started when Dundalk all but killed the game off through a goal from Ronan Finn.

CULTURE Welcome to the May Culture section of InTallaght Magazine. There is plenty happening this month in Tallaght with a fun coincidence at South Dublin Libraries with their 1916 window mural, Pat Shortt is coming to the Civic and RUA RED’s Then And In Time To Be project. Read on for more.
THIS MONTH AT THE CIVIC : The Civic brings the show Signatories to Tallaght where eight world-class Irish writers bring to life the innermost thoughts of the seven signatories of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic, along with Nurse Elizabeth O’Farrell, during the last days of their lives. Sending out commands, addressing the people, lying in Kilmainham Gaol, facing the firing squad, being airbrushed out of public view; each of the eight are given their individual voices by the writers. Each monologue is ten minutes and the performance is directed by Patrick Mason. Hosted by South Dublin County Arts Office and the Civic Theatre as part of the 1916 Commemoration Programme. Comedy this month features Cormac Moore of Spin 106 fame with his show Will Work For Wifi, while Pat Shortt tours his latest show Selfie on Saturday May 7th. Also Al Porter’s Work in Progress show is completely sold out for May 16th to 22nd! Hard-hitting drama The Language of the Mute is showing on May 9th and 10th about ex-pupils invading a Dublin classroom to confront their former teacher, whose actions have had a profound effect on them. For fans of musicals, Bull Alley present A Chorus Line on May 10th to 14th and for Ballet fans Irish National Youth Ballet return to the Civic with their Annual Showcase. This year they present A Midsummer Night’s Dream as the main ballet in the programme. There are three

This May RUA RED is packed to the brim with exhibitions and events! Don’t miss your chance to see Then and In Time To Be before it finishes up on May 14th. Over 150 local people between the ages of seven and 90 years of age took part in this 1916 commemoration exhibition that showcases imaginative stories and illustrations of the county’s past and future. /Glitch, RUA RED’s annual technology festival is also back from May 30th – June 11th. Bringing together leading media and digital artists, curators, researchers and artist groups, /Glitch is a feast for the technologically curious. This year’s festival will be hosted in two Dublin based galleries, RUA RED Gallery, Tallaght and The Mart Gallery, Rathmines. Curators Ciara Scanlon and Matthew Nevin have invited all female participants to make work exploring the theme of danger and risk making! If you’ve visited the County Library in Tallaght over the past few months, you’ve probably noticed their 1916 Rising themed windows, painted by the artist Cormac Cullinane. As well as a reproduction of the Proclamation, portraits of its signatories, and scenes of the destruction in Dublin, one of the windows is based on an evocative 1966 photograph of two boys standing in the stone breakers’ yard at Kilmainham Gaol, where of course the leaders of the Rising were executed in May 1916. A serendipitous event occurred last week when Mark Duggan walked into the library and was surprised to see himself on the window. Mark is the young boy on the right of the photograph, wearing the wellington boots, and he appears on the left on the painted interpretation. The original photograph was taken by Mr. Duggan’s father, who was a staff photographer with the Irish Press, in 1966. What a cool coincidence!
