THE EDITOR Is it time for Easter Eggs yet? For anyone doing Lent, it can’t come quickly enough! This month also brings us Mother’s Day (so get your presents ready) and Good Friday (so buy your drink on the Thursday before!). This issue we had the great honour to talk to the wonderful Jordanne Jones, local teenager and movie star! Jordanne told us all about how education is so important to her and how her Mam has been an inspiration to her – her Mam is Lynn Ruane, Trinity College Student Union President. Turn to page 16 to read more about Jordanne! This year is an important one for 1916 celebrations, but more locally Tallaght is celebrating An Cosán’s 30 year anniversary! From starting up as The Shanty in 1986 by Dr. Anne Louise Gilligan and Independent Senator Katherine Zappone as a means to bring education to make social change, to a purpose built community education centre in Rainbow House, An Cosán is a place of change for anyone who wants it. Turn to page 20 to read how An Cosán has changed the lives of so many in three decades.

We also had the pleasure of talking to three participants of the Foróige Fun Run taking place in Tymon Park on March 12th. The brave souls have signed up to a six-week training session with Fit4Less to get in shape and run or walk three miles, all to raise funds for the local youth centre. Get inspired and join in the fun yourself! We also learned about the new CAP Indie Book awards, set up by local teacher Carolann Copland to help gain recognition for self published authors. Carolann also runs writing workshops and has written two books herself, with the third on the way! If you have a book you’ve always meant to write, this could be your way to do it… As usual we have all our regular features, from movie reviews to game, tech, car and book. Add to that some sports, Rovers section and plenty of news as well as a column with Paddy Holohan and we’ve got something for everyone in InTallaght magazine. If you can’t wait for our monthly magazine, be sure to check out our website intallaght.ie for your daily news fix too! Happy reading,

RTÉ broadcaster Vivienne Traynor named Ambassador for Organ Donor Awareness Week By Genna Patterson ____________________________ Living Kidney donor and RTÉ broadcaster Vivienne Traynor has been named the ambassador for Organ Donor Awareness Week 2016 which is organised by the Irish Kidney Association. Vivienne has a personal connection to organ donation as she donated a kidney to her nephew Martin Traynor. Martin then needed another transplant five years later which he received from a deceased donor. Vivienne said: “When news came through that a second kidney was available for Martin I was at first elated but this feeling was very quickly replaced by thoughts for the deceased donor and their family. I was really touched that a family in the midst of all their grief took the time to consider someone else. “I am delighted to have been invited by the Irish Kidney Association to be the ambassador for Donor Awareness Week and I hope that by sharing the story of donation and transplantation in our family we can help other families

to start the conversation about their wishes surrounding deceased organ donation.” There are approximately 700 people in Ireland awaiting life-saving heart, lung, liver, kidney and pancreas transplants. Thanks to the gift of organ donation over 3,000 people in Ireland are enjoying extended life. The focus of Organ Donor Awareness Week is to raise awareness about the ongoing and ever increasing demand for organ transplantation which relies on the public for organ donation. Its key message is that families need to talk and keep the reminders of their willingness to donate visible by carrying the organ donor card, downloading the Smartphone App and permitting Code 115 to be included on their driver’s license. Organ Donor Awareness Week also serves as a fundraising exercise for the Irish Kidney Association that runs from April 2nd - 9th, 2016.
The company bought Jacob’s factory in Tallaght in July 2015 and are now developing it into a data centre. Jacob’s Factory was closed down and was unused for eight years. Amazon also has seven data centres in Ireland but feel this development will bring more attention to their presence in Dublin.

According to a poll of thousands of women, men from the Emerald Isle trumped all others to come out as the hottest in the world. 66,000 single American women were surveyed for MissTravel.com, out of which almost 8,000 said Irish men are the sexiest. Around half said the reason for choosing an Irish man was to do with their accents.
Ballyboden Walking and Cycling Project wins National Planning Award By Rachel Maloney ____________________________ A walking and cycling project for schools in Ballyboden has won an award for Smart Travel at this year’s National Planning Awards at the Irish Planning Institute (IPI) National Planning Awards in Dublin. South Dublin County Council (SDCC) won the Award for its Walking and Cycling to School Pilot Project in Ballyboden because it highlighted the importance of getting local communities behind the project and putting theory into practice. They also won a second award in the Planning for Climate Change category for developing a spatial energy demand analysis of the area. IPI President Deirdre Fallon said: “In the project planners moved out of their offices to work proactively with school management and local communities in Ballyboden, listening to their ideas and then putting these into the design. Jobstown doctors to offer online consultations By genna patterson ________________________ A Jobstown-based family practice of GPs has started to offer online consultations using an app-based technology. Jobstown Family Practice on the Fortunestown Road, will be the first to embark on “telemedicine” in Ireland by letting doctors consult with patients online and not in person. Dr ÓCiardha told The Irish Times that the technology offers patients
the opportunity to see their own GPs rather than a GP who they have never met before. “It allows us as GPs to ensure the continuity of care of our patients, as we know them and have access to

The awards include an overall winner, nine category winners and a President’s Choice. The overall winner was the North Lotts and Grand Canal Dock Planning Scheme by planners at Dublin City Council which is the biggest urban redevelopment and regeneration project in the history of the State. Over 60% of the plan area is now benefiting from permissions granted giving a sustainable vision for this major part of the city.

It could help patients who cannot travel to a surgery in person due to illness, immobility, other commitments or travel restrictions. Using ‘VideoDoc’ technology Dr Darach ÓCiardha is going to pilot the practice with medical card patients who have mental health or mobility issues with the plan to roll it out to all patients eventually.

Those interested in taking part can pay for walks separately or avail of the weekend walk pass, and prices are related to the grade rating of each walk. There is also a 50% discount for family walks.
The Department of Health said funding for treatments will be made available as part of a bill due to be published later this year. Department officials are carrying out a review of international funding models in countries such as the UK to inform policy in the area. The government gave approval to draft a general scheme of legislative provisions dealing with assisted human reproduction in February 2015. Drafting is now underway and the general scheme will be published in the first half of 2016.

10,000 Dubliners asked to ‘Rise’ up to the challenge and join the Team Dublin Clean-Up By padraig conlon _________________________ Lord Mayor Críona Ní Dhálaigh and broadcaster Joe Duffy launched Dublin City Council’s inaugural Team Dublin Clean-Up initiative last month. Team Dublin Clean-Up calls on residents, community groups and businesses in Dublin to come out and support a special clean-up effort in their local area ahead of the 1916 Centenary Commemorations. The collaborative clean-up will take place in various locations around the city on Easter Saturday, March 26th, 2016 from 11am to 1pm. Individuals and groups can register on teamdublincleanup.ie. Dublin City Council’s Waste Management Division will be providing all clean up equipment to
those who register and will remove litter collected for disposal on the day. An tArdmhéara Críona Ní Dhálaigh said: “Based on the success of many small local community clean ups across the city and especially the Adopt a Street programme I encourage everyone to get together and help make our city super clean in the run up to the 1916 centenary commemorations by joining the Team Dublin Clean Up. Keeping Dublin litter free is a shared responsibility for all of us. Ní neart go cur le chéile. Déanaimis iarracht speisialta an chathair a glanadh don Chomóradh Céad Bliain.’’ Also commenting on the new initiative, Joe Duffy said he was looking forward to seeing Dubliners come out to support the big clean up. “We are looking for 10,000 volunteers to come out and help make Dublin a litter free city on Easter Saturday. Everyone in this great city of ours should take pride in where they live and make a special effort in advance of the historic celebrations.”

Report says we currently have lowest ever availability of rental property By Padraig Conlon __________________________ The report says that as of February 1st there are only 3,600 properties across the whole country available for rent, the lowest number since these reports began ten years ago. It also said that Dublin has been effectively starved of rental properties with less than two weeks supply, or just 1,400 rental homes, on the market in the capital. The availability of rental accommodation nationwide has been consistently decreasing since the end of 2010, in comparison to now, back then
12 // #intallaght / TWEET US
there were 16,000 available properties to rent. Author of the report, Daft chief economist Ronan Lyons, concluded that the lack of housing has been caused by a drop-off in construction coupled with a growing population. He also said some of the reasons given for the lack of new builds don’t make sense. “The shortage of accommodation was first identified in the report in late 2010, ahead of the last election. Unfortunately, at the time, the political focus was on legacy issues related to ghost estates and negative equity.” Daft.ie also said the report shows the national average rent between October and December last year was €979, up from €898 the previous year. With an average price of €1,435, Dublin held its position as the most expensive place to rent in 2015.

Personal Injury by colm o’Cochlain
____________________ ocochlain.ie
If you have been involved in an accident and have suffered an injury as a result there are number of things to consider before you can take a case. Any false or exaggerated claim will fail and you could be prosecuted. Continuing on from last month, Colm O’Cochlain gives our readers more advice.
THE INJURIES BOARD All claims for damages for personal injuries have to go through the Injuries Board. They have an excellent web site at injuriesboard.ie. The Injuries Board write out to the Defendant and ask them to confirm if they agree that they are responsible for the accident or if they are defending the case. The defendant has 90 days to confirm their position. If the Defendants say they are not responsible and want to challenge and defend the case then the Injuries Board will issue an “authorisation” that allows you to take your case through the Courts (we will look at this later).
If on the other hand the Defendants agree that they are responsible then the Injuries Board will write out to you or your solicitor and confirm that they are “assessing” the case. This means that they will look at the medical evidence, obtain their own medical evidence and provide a monetary assessment of the value of your injuries. They will assess the case within nine months (unless there are unforeseen circumstances). They obtain their own report (you will be required to attend with a nominated Doctor) from an independent Doctor and send out their assessment based on the evidence. Both parties have to accept the assessment for it to be finalised. You have 28 days and the Defendant has 21 days to accept the assessment. If both parties accept then a notice to pay will issue and the compensation will be sent to your solicitor. If either party does not accept the settlement then it goes to Court but with the caveat that unless you get more than the assessment you may have to pay the Defendant’s costs for going through the Courts.

Tallaght has changed a bit since ____________________________ ’97, there’s a lot more different cultures living here now compared to almost 20 years ago, it’s more multicultural which is a good thing. by padraig conlon
@INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG
“I’ve been living in Tallaght since 1997, initially in Old Bawn and I’m currently living in Jobstown. After school I was in college for a year studying advertising and graphic design, and then I got a job in retail. To be honest I wished I didn’t, I wished I’d stayed in college. It was a one year course and I wanted to get into that field but unfortunately at the time there were no opportunities in it so I ended up spending four years in retail. Back then I didn’t mind but now I kind of regret not staying in college. So kids stay in school, don’t believe the hype! It’s what you do with education, you may have loads of qualifications but if you’re not doing what you want to do I think it’s a waste of time. You don’t really need a degree though once you know what you want to do! Tallaght has changed a bit since ’97, there’s a lot more different cultures living here now compared to almost 20 years ago, it’s more multicultural which is a good thing. Things are moving the right way. The perception people have about Tallaght annoys me, it’s so exaggerated, it doesn’t deserve some of the negativity it gets from the media. Like anywhere there’s good and bad but it’s a good place to live with a great community spirit. At the moment I’m happy living here. I’ve been working in insurance for the last eight years. Five

years ago I got involved in fundraising because I want to look back on life one day and know that I have tried to make a difference in someone’s life, I’m not sure if it’s possible but it doesn’t mean I can’t try. In the last few years we’ve raised over €80,000, it’s good fun hard work, if that’s the right word, and I really enjoy doing it. We try to spread the love by choosing different charities. I’ve worked with DEBRA Ireland, Citywise Education, Laura Lynn and Alzheimers Ireland and currently I’m working on something for the Autism Scope in Tallaght. We are having an Easter Egg hunt at the end of the month and then a boxing event on the June Bank Holiday. I’ve also started doing my own corporate events under the name Peacock Events since last summer. I just thought I’d give it a shot. I created games from The Cube TV show and what I do is run them as a team building exercise with companies. I’ve done a few so far and they’ve gone well. In the long term doing events is what I want to do but I’m still going to keep doing the charity work because I enjoy doing it. I don’t see myself working in insurance for ever. At the moment I’m working on a video to raise awareness about suicide. The title of the video is “Don’t be afraid to talk” and it deals with the effect suicide has on family members left behind. Suicide is one of those subjects nobody wants to talk about and it’s an issue that really needs to be addressed. Unless people talk about it nothing will change.”

Keeping up with Jordanne Jones Young Tallaght actress Jordanne Jones is hotly tipped as Ireland’s next big thing. >MOTQX 8eZOT _\[WQ `[ `TQ _`M^ MN[a` SQ``UZS a_QP `[ RMYQ MZP cTe QPaOM`U[Z U_ TQ^ Ō^_` \^U[^U`e by RACHEL LYNCh @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL
It’s hard to believe that almost two years ago Jordanne Jones was virtually unheard of. The local Tallaght actress who is being hailed as the next Saoirse Ronan burst onto the scenes last year when she took on her very first role and hasn’t looked back since. We at InTallaght spoke to the Killinarden native who told us how she landed that very first role that set the ball rolling and also why she is intent on completing her studies here in Ireland before making any further decisions on her career. She said, “I always wanted to be an actress, I did theatre in school and my mam saw that there was an audition for the film I Used to Live Here at the community centre. I just went down with one of my mates and since that film I have gone to film festivals and got a scholarship in Bow Street, Smithfield. I Used to Live Here was released last year in March with their official premiere here at The Square Tallaght. The critically acclaimed and awardwinning feature film from Dublin
writer/director Frank Berry tells the story of Amy (Jordanne), a 13-yearold trying to cope with the death of her mother and the reappearance of her father’s ex-girlfriend and who experiences the temptation of suicide after witnessing the outpouring of love for a local suicide victim. The film takes a fictional look at how the idea of suicide can spread in communities, particularly among young people. The film was locally produced and Jordanne explains how many of the cast were actually friends and family members of hers so she felt very relaxed taking on her first major role. “We had workshops in the community centre for the film but I didn’t go to any of them because another girl got the role and ended up dropping out, so auditions were held again. I didn’t even know I was
There was actually a dramatic scene where I’m at the bridge and I’m ringing my dad to tell him I’m going to commit suicide and that really got me. I was able to let everything out and it was all real auditioning for the main role. The cast were either my cousins or my mates. The production saw Jordanne working every weekend for six months and tells us whenever director Frank Berry was short on extras she was always on hand to offer support and round people up. “Well my nanny lives there (in that estate) or I have like 14 cousins so one by one everyone got a chance to be in it.

Once I started to learn that I wanted to know more. Rebellion made me want to know more, I found it really interesting PERSONAL EXPERIENCE Jordanne took on a very serious role at such a young age and had to tackle the topic of suicide and she explains how she found getting into character a whole lot easier as she could relate to Amy. “I could relate a lot to what Amy was going through. I was going through a lot of what she was going through and was actually attending Pieta House while I was doing that movie. I think that’s why I got a lot of good feedback on the role because I could feel for her because I was feeling pain at the time as well.” Jordanne tells of how she dealt with one of the more challenging parts of the film as her character considers suicide, but for her it wasn’t really acting at all as everything just felt so real. “There was actually a dramatic scene where I’m at the bridge and I’m ringing my dad to tell him I’m going to commit suicide and that really got me. I was able to let everything out and it was all real. I didn’t have to force it. “That’s a lot of my acting roles, all the roles I have had so far has been dramatic. So I have been suicidal in that role, I have been a prostitute in Rebellion and then in Dark Matter I was a feral child. I like these roles.” A quote that Jordanne feels is significant to her when taking on these tough roles is one from deceased musician Kurt Cobain: “Thank you for your tragedy, it helps me with my art.” Jordanne says she finds acting is almost

like therapy for her. I Used To Live Here saw Jordanne nominated for Best Actress at the IFTA’s although she knew very little about the nomination at first or the actual awards. “That was crazy I was in school at the time and I didn’t realise because I hadn’t heard about it till I was nominated and I didn’t think it was a big deal. I got called from my English class and I left the classroom and my mam was screaming on the phone, ‘you are after getting nominated for an IFTA’ so when I went back I said ‘Sir what’s an ISTA award?’ I thought it was called an ISTA and didn’t even think it was a big deal and then I found out it was the IFTA’s and that Charlie Murphy and the Love/Hate cast were nominated too.” At just 14 years of age heading to the IFTA’s is exciting in itself but attending it while being nominated for
Best Actress is some achievement and something Jordanne is very proud of, and she said she “loved it so much.”
INSPIRATIONAL MOTHER Jordanne speaks highly of the influence her mother has had on her over the years. Lynn Ruane, Jordanne’s mother who is this year’s President of the Student Union at Trinity College was pregnant with Jordanne at just 15 years of age. “My mam has definitely kept me on the right track. Thinking back to a lot of decisions I could have made and didn’t is because of her. She has always pushed me to do things, that’s probably why I have accomplished so much.” Jordanne jokes how she is now the same age as her mother was when she gave birth to her and says there is no way she would be able to manage it. “I can barely cope with doing this
interview now so a baby? No. I always think about that, she wouldn’t have been as busy as me at this age. It’s very scary though. That’s why I admire my mam so much because even when I’m having conversations with my friends about babies and stuff like that and being pregnant at this age I say there is a whole different world out there and there is so much out there.” Jordanne’s latest role was with RTÉ production Rebellion, which tells the story of the people of Ireland during the time of 1916. Her role was as a young prostitute, Jordanne tells us how she had very little interest in Irish history while in school but since working on the production has learned so much about that particular iconic moment in Ireland’s history. “I had to learn a little bit about it before getting into the role itself and learn about what
life was like. Once I started to learn that I wanted to know more. Rebellion made me want to know more, I found it really interesting.” Although Irish history wasn’t always top of Jordanne’s list she enjoyed the Renaissance, Celts and the Vikings “It’s not that I didn’t like Irish history, I just found it hard to keep up with because of the dates and names so I did find it kind of hard but after I did Rebellion I found out what life was like and what Ireland was like for just an ordinary individual. I did good on my Christmas history tests after it too!” The role with RTÉ was a massive step from what Jordanne has been used to working with. Millions were invested into the production and all on proper sets while it was filmed with top of the range cameras not to mention some of the actors and actresses she worked alongside. The role of a prostitute isn’t the easiest of tasks for any actress let alone one of just 15 years of age but Jordanne said she enjoyed it. “I was told before I got the script that I was going to play a prostitute and I had conversations with my mam about it and I loved that it was going to be a dramatic role.” As a successful actress already with an IFTA nomination under her belt we want to know how does such a young lady juggle work commitments and school? “I’m in fifth year now and I want my Leaving Cert. I love English as a subject, and I’m living in Trinity College right now.”
TRINITY BASE Jordanne and her sister are living at Trinity College since the summer due to the fact that her mother Lynn has taken on the role of Student Union President and she explains how the change of location took some adjustment. “At first it took a bit of getting use to and it can be hard. I’m still in school in Tallaght. Sometimes my friends don’t understand how busy I am and then as well the fact I live in Trinity. I was a really moody teenager about moving into Trinity first!” Although a struggle to adapt to the
changes of moving home for a year Jordanne says she now has started to take an interest in her surroundings. “I have started to explore a bit more, I’m obsessed with Shakespeare, for my birthday I got a book of his work. I love the movie Romeo and Juliet and the director of that film Baz Luhrmann was doing a Q&A there. I went to it and asked a question and he picked me from the crowd to go up and meet him, so I was able to talk to him about acting. After that I really started to appreciate living in Trinity more.” For a young lady who has done so much in such a small frame of time not to mention being hailed as the next Saoirse Ronan we had to ask her what’s next? She reveals, “I have been asked a lot lately what I want to do and what’s my dream and goals and I never really had goals I just kind of enjoyed it all and when something came up I was just delighted to be in it. I never really thought about how much further and where I was going to go.” She is adamant on one thing though and that is to star in a horror movie. “I just want something really dramatic. I want to hopefully be able to balance it all out, like school and go to NCAD because I love art.” Although Jordanne is happy to continue along the artistic route she would love the success of Ronan too. “I would like to be where Saoirse Ronan is because she has gone so far.” The name of Saoirse Ronan has followed Jordanne around, particularly with her recent successes and when we asked what she thought about the whole thing she gave us this very simple answer. “When I was in RTÉ they asked me would I rather be Saoirse Ronan because of my acting, or Katie Taylor for boxing or some other girl and I just said I would like to be Jordanne.” With so much planned for this year and next we at InTallaght wish Jordanne the best of luck with her career. We just hope she remembers us when she is collecting those Oscars!

Community Care at An Cosán
Community education and care centre An Cosán has reached a remarkable 30 years of positive impact in the area. InTallaght got to meet the inspirational women behind it. by PADRAIG CONLON @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG
“Education is not the filling of a bucket but the lighting of a fire.” WB Yeats. For 30 years An Cosán in Jobstown has been lighting fires. Thousands of them. Each one bringing empowerment and the opportunity of a better life. In those three decades this remarkable education centre has grown into a shining beacon for the people of West Tallaght. To honour this anniversary I’ve come to meet three of the people involved in this outstanding organisation. The minute I walk in the door everything about the place is warm. From the welcome I get, to the library where we sit and chat, to my hosts, CEO Maura McMahon, Sinead Kelly, who is Education Director and Anne Genockey, Manager of Rainbow House, the main feeling I get is one of warmth. The whole building feels like a space people would want to spend time in. In September 1986 Katherine Zappone and Ann Louise Gilligan’s dream of helping people less fortunate was made a reality when they opened the Shanty project in their home in Brittas. In a letter to friends at the time they explained their reasons. “For some time now we have dreamed of founding an educational centre. At the beginning

of the summer we came upon ‘The Shanty’, an old cedar home in Brittas, Co. Dublin. At the back of the house a previous owner built a four-car garage that we hope to convert into this centre. Our long-term goal is to form a small community of people who are committed to the work of the centre. We hope that both the communal and educational setting will promote freedom from sexism, classism, and any other kind of social inequality. We understand this to be a spiritual as well as an educational venture. We want to have a table that is open to all - for food, drink, compassion, merriment, visioning, storytelling and decisionmaking. This is our dream.” Since 1999 An Cosán has been based in this wonderful three storey
We hope that both the communal and educational setting will promote freedom from sexism, classism, and any other kind of social inequality
We ensure that people are warmly welcomed because if they feel safe and comfortable and not threatened then they are more likely to sign up for a course and give it a go building I’m sitting in which houses classrooms, a library, Open Learning Centre, Rainbow House Educational Childcare Centre and a counselling service. Over 1,000 people come through its doors every year, made up of a combination of older students, adult education students and young children. An Cosán’s mission is to eradicate poverty through education and their remit is working with people from 0 to 90. The staff of 70 are dedicated to meeting the needs of people the minute they walk in to the building whether that need is a counselling service or basic education.
POSITIVE EFFECTS CEO Maura says it is incredible to see how far An Cosán has come and how many lives it has improved. “Since two amazing women had an idea all those years ago so many people have had such a massive transformative effect from education and their contact here. Some people say it’s a second chance at education but I disagree with that because if someone was having difficulties starting out in life they didn’t get a first chance,” she says.
“So many of the people have gone on from here to be very successful, some of them might be on national boards or organisations like NAMA or the likes of education and training boards. The impact quality early years education has on peoples’ lives is vitally important. A few years ago Ann Louise attempted to find out more about the progress of 1,500 past pupils and discovered 1,200 were employed which is a great number. It all starts the minute they walk in the door. We ensure that people are warmly welcomed because if they feel safe and comfortable and not threatened then they are more likely to sign up for a course and give it a go.” Sinead Kelly agrees that first impressions are fundamental. “The ethos is so important to the work we do that a lot people say it’s like a home away from home,” she says. “It’s important that the minute people come in they feel the sense of warmth because that’s where people grow. What I love about what we do is how we bring people in and give people confidence.” As she is responsible for all the new technology programmes, Sinead feels right now is a really exciting time for the education and training team.
“If you don’t have digital skills you can feel excluded from a lot of areas of life,” she says. “Especially at that moment when we’re at that entrance phase of getting people in and making them feel important. It is amazing to see people come in without any tech skills and go from setting up email accounts right up to developing their own websites and creating apps and starting businesses. Technology has the power to help people do anything in an accessible way. If you can encourage people to engage in it and get rid of that fear people are transformed without having to go on and do an accredited course. For me I think this is really powerful and what I’m really excited about is where that can go over the next couple of years.”
CORPORATE COMMUNICATIONS Maura and Sinead tell me they’ve had great support from some very big corporations. “IBM, Accenture and Motorola have all helped out which is brilliant but I’d like to pull in more companies in the area. Hopefully they could offer people experience of that working environment, it could be a two-way street,” says Sinead. “If we can develop that organically into something

An Cosán
We all ended up working in the four corners of the community, putting back into it what we learned here. There is something beautiful about that that impact like maybe an accredited piece or a connection be made with employers. If you’re tech savvy an employer will probably train you up anyway which would help eliminate college fees. If you could bridge those links locally that would really be a great thing for the community ethos.”
22 // #intallaght / TWEET US
Maura says things like the donation of an interactive white board level the playing field. “It is important that people here have access to what other people have,” she says. Anne Genockey tells me another wonderful aspect to An Cosán is so many of the staff who work there are past pupils. “In Rainbow house 75% of the staff would have trained here, they got their formal education here. They then went through the formal interviews and systems, they weren’t just given a job because they trained here. I think about 80% of the staff live in the local community.” she says. “I myself started here in 1991 by doing a Back To Study course and learning to type, which was hilarious! I’d left school very early as the ethos in my house was go out and get a job so I came here to the old Shanty and worked a part-time admin job, did Montessori training, learned pay roll skills and eventually worked my way up to Manager. But there are loads of stories like that in here.”
Anne is responsible for the youngest An Cosán students, from small toddlers up to 12 year olds. “The amount of people coming to learn to read and write is still a big need. Because we’re getting children so young now we’re building up their independence. The early years curriculum we can link to the school curriculum and show how they’re preparing for formal education which a lot of the time is important for the parents so they’re ready to go on and learn. We always look into what brought people here initially and it’s always word of mouth is the most common way to learn about An Cosán. If I’ve done a course I’m more likely to tell my neighbour. People in the community really appreciate what is being done here.” Sinead likewise came through An Cosán. “I did the degree in Community Development and Leadership here. There were 15 of us local women on that course and we took what we learned and then worked in different organisations in the area. We all ended
up working in the four corners of the community, putting back into it what we learned here. There is something beautiful about that that impact. When people go out and share their skills that’s true community.”
BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS An Cosán is much, much more than a place of learning. They also provide childcare which can be one of the biggest barriers to education for women, counselling and mentoring. “To me it’s such a simple idea that I don’t know why the rest of the world hasn’t understood it and taken it on board,” says Maura. “But they haven’t! The results speak for themselves. We keep growing, it’s quite an incredible thing.” The results have been so successful An Cosán now have nine other sites across Dublin with up to 350 other families all benefiting from their impeccably high standard of education and training. They also face the same challenges as many other organisations in Ireland
in 2016, a gradual year-on-year cut in funding and the constant battle to find the extra revenue. Maura feels whatever government gets in this month needs to seriously reexamine and reverse these cuts. “30 years on from being set up we’re sitting here seeing things that are incredible but the government have a role in supporting that, not just in Tallaght West but in every community in the country,” she says. “They need to cop on to themselves and fund in the right way. Every year funding is being hit and this is making things more challenging. We’re just constantly scrambling around for different programmes which I think should be like a basic fundamental human right. Even though we haven’t documented it in a research way yet it’s quite obvious anecdotally the positive impact that we’re having. An intuitive approach to making people welcome and giving them back their confidence absolutely works. It seems pretty simple doesn’t it? One of the things that
someone said to me as an observation is if you look around our area things aren’t completely obliterated, people feel proud and you can see that manifested in the environment.” In spite of all the cuts Sinead said staff never let standards slip. “I can assure you the standard of care has never wavered here even though funding has been cut. The staff truly care about everyone who comes here because they are so inspiring. It’s a two way street really, both inspire each other.” Congratulations An Cosán for your 30 years of awe-inspiring work in West Tallaght and beyond. To all the staff, students and friends of the organisation all I can say is a massive congratulations and wish you the very best for the future. Keep the home fires burning. Here’s to the next 30 years…

Kickstart Fitness: Tallaght’s Only TRX Training Centre ____________________________ Do you need to get fit, lose some weight or just tone up? Well look no further than Kickstart Fitness, Tallaght’s only official TRX Centre. Located at 7-8 Brookfield Enterprise, Tallaght, the Kickstart team all share the same passion and goals to use unique training systems in an enjoyable and friendly atmosphere and believe that exercise should be enjoyed not endured! TRX is a type of suspension training that uses a system of ropes and webbing called a “suspension trainer” to allow users to work against their own body weight. The benefit of this type of exercise is that it develops core body strength, as well as joint and muscular stability. The Kickstart Fitness team aim to cater for all levels of fitness, experience and time commitments so don’t be put off by the thoughts of a regular gym! This is far from that and they want to accommodate every person wishing to improve their lifestyle. Darren Dillon, Founder and Trainer set up the business five years ago because he found TRX to be so versatile and a real tool to make everyone better at whatever they do, whether they be a footballer, boxer,
runner, whatever your modality is. Darren is a TRX Master Trainer for Ireland as well as one of just five Trigger Point Therapy Master Trainers too. He says: “The most rewarding part of the business is seeing people get better, fitter, stronger. We’ve built a whole vibe in here with 1,300 members. It’s not like a regular gym at all, everything is class-based and there’s interaction and a social aspect to it so when you come in there’s a fun vibe and it’s not just all about the exercise.” What’s most important is that Kickstart think exercise should be fun and they aim to engage each person individually continuously developing a warm and friendly environment for their clients to not only train but socialise too so it never feels like hard work! Foróige Fun Run
foróige Fun Run by genna patterson @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGENNA
Five locals are taking part and training for the first ever Foróige Fun Run in Tymon Park this March. Meet three of the five participants here. Local youth organisation Foróige Tallaght have organised a Fun Run at Tymon Park on March 12th. Kicking off at 11am, the event is aiming to raise funds from registrations for the local youth centre (Charity Number CHY 5359), which is located opposite The Square Luas stop. The run will be three and five miles in duration, with three mile registration costing just €10 and five mile costing €15. Parking, bag drop, chiptimed results and refreshments will all be available in the park on the day too. Foróige is Ireland’s leading Youth Development organisation and has been working with young people since 1952. They aim to enable young people to involve themselves consciously and actively in their development and in the development of society. Foróige Tallaght work with 5,500 young people aged 10-18 years and 450 volunteers each year through volunteer-led clubs and staff-led youth projects. Foróige Tallaght has organised that five local people will be sponsored and trained by Fit4Less gym to get into shape in six weeks and run the three miles on the day. These willing participants range in all ages and backgrounds and their main goal is to encourage you to also take part. If they can do it, so can you!
26 // #intallaght / TWEET US
Adrian O’Sullivan from Nenagh, Tipperary is a Garda at Tallaght Station. How did you get involved with the Foróige Fun Run? I’m friends with Laura Kelly from Foróige and she asked me to do it to help them raise awareness for the Fun Run. Being a Garda in Tallaght will help them get a bit more awareness. I was trying to get the other guards to sign up but they won’t do it! (Laughs) A lot of them are working that day anyway so can’t do it. Are you aiming to do the three or five miles? Three miles and I’m going to jog it. That’s my goal to jog it and not walk any of it. Is this the first time you’ve done anything like this? No, this is the first one. So far so good, I’m using it to get fit because I’m getting married in a few months and want to lose some weight for it, got to look good for the photos you know! What kind of training are you doing? Our trainer Jack does a programme with us in Fit4Less gym, the bike, treadmill and some classes as well. I try to do it three times a week though we can do as many as we want. I like to do a break in between days. I’m going to start running on the roads soon to transition from inside in the warmth to outside in the cold! It’s to get used to the road surface and hills and all but I might wait until the frost goes first.
Do you think after doing this Fun Run you’d do another one? I’ll definitely keep up the fitness anyway. If I keep training I might try a five-mile or ten-mile eventually, keep trying and see how it goes. It makes you feel better afterwards because you know you’re doing something good for your health. Is it important to you to do this for Foróige and if so, why? Yes, they do so much for the local youths in Tallaght, it’s great to get them all interested in things and learning new stuff. Foróige is really great for the community.
KARL BROWN FROM JOBSTOWN IS A VOLUNTEER AT FORÓIGE (FOR THE PAST FIVE YEARS) AND WORKS FOR MOVIE EXTRAS PART TIME. How did you get involved with the Foróige Fun Run? I saw Laura Kelly the Youth Officer at Foróige Tallaght posted the Fun Run on Facebook and I thought there’s no way I’d be able to do that! Then I thought about some of the young people in our projects, like we sometimes do educational projects, the first thing we always ask them is ‘what’s your hopes and your fears?’ And their fears are always ‘I won’t be able to do this’, and then I thought maybe I would be able to do it and it’s just fear holding me back. And so I decided to give it a go, for the sake of raising funds for more local projects for Foróige.
Are you aiming to do the three or five miles? I actually signed up for the three miles because I didn’t have enough money on my card that day! (Laughs) I’m not sure they’d stop me though if I just kept going! I don’t run ever, so three miles or five kilometers will be hard enough for me. I’d like to be able to jog the entire thing so I’m doing intervals at the moment to train up to a full jog from jog/walk/jog/walk. My aim is to be able to jog it all and finish so I don’t have a time in mind or anything. That’s the hope anyway, to jog the whole thing! Is this the first time you’ve done anything like this? Yes, this will be my first one ever. It’s a bit daunting but the lads in the Fit4less gym who are training me are really good. Today I did two and half miles, which is nearly the three, and we’ve just about a month left to go to the run on March 12th. What kind of training are you doing? They have me on cardio, interval training, so what he suggested was five and a half speed for a run and four and a half for a walk but I found that a bit much for the walk and he said that’s grand so I lowered it a bit. He said it’s ok to do it at my own pace. Then after that he suggested two types of light weights and shoulder weights and squats which are actually the worst out of everything! Then there’s the plank which seems like it should be the easiest of them all but it’s so painful! Do you think after doing this Fun Run you’d do another one? Yeah a friend has asked me about Hell and Back, which is 12 km or something, but the rate I’m going at now, I’m considering it. I may even do that for Foróige as well! I was at one trying to rise awareness for a different charity and aside from the nearly dying part it looks so much fun (laughs)!
Is it important to you to do this for Foróige and if so, why? Yes absolutely, I’ve been volunteering for them for about five years now in that time I think I’ve developed as a person. Like I’ve gotten to do so much training, I’ve gotten to go to Switzerland with them… they paid for a load of us to do a Level 7 in training, technically it’s on the level of a degree. So I just want to give something back to them. At the moment I volunteer two nights a week doing the Youth Cafe and the Dermot Earley Leadership Programme which aims to bring out the leadership abilities in young people. I think I learn more from them than they do from me though!
EILEEN MEIER, FROM MILBROOK LAWNS, WORKS AT TALLAGHT YOUTH SERVICES How did you get involved with the Foróige Fun Run? Christy and Laura who are organising the Fun Run asked me would I take part in it. And I said yeah, I’m always game for something like this. I work with them – I’m a domestic engineer! (Laughs). I was a volunteer in Foróige, we set up the ‘And And And’ club in 1995 so I’m one of the originals and I did that for about 10 years. Are you aiming to do the three or five miles? At first they asked me would I run it and I thought maybe I would and I sat and thought about and I said no, I’ll walk it. I didn’t want to commit myself to running and then not be able to, at my age! I’m doing the three miles anyway. I’d say I’ll be grand, once I know I can get around the Dodder for the three miles I’m safe.
Is this the first time you’ve done anything like this? I’ve done the Mini-marathon before a couple of times, walked it. That one is 10km but I didn’t feel it because I was walking with a group enjoying myself. You don’t feel you’re walking very long really. I don’t know if I’ll do that again this year, we’ll leave a question mark on that one. What kind of training are you doing? I do different training to the others because I’m walking it. I go out about two or three times a week and try and do three laps around the Dodder which is three miles. And then I’ve a treadmill at home for the rainy days. My daughter walks with me at the moment, sometimes she has to drag me out! She’s going to do it on the day too with me. And there’s a receptionist I know in Tallaght Youth Services who is also going to do it. Do you think after doing this Fun Run you’d do another one? If I see the weight come off I will. As you get older you have to start watching your health. I’m also doing the local Operation Transformation at the moment. Every week we get weighed in Bernie’s office and this year she put an incentive into it in that everybody had to put €20 in and whoever loses 7% of what weight they started on, they share that money. I do it every year and this year I’ve already lost a few pounds. Is it important to you to do this for Foróige and if so, why? I think it’s great the money is going back into the local Foróige for youth services. There are a lot of young people who need help out there and I see what work the girls do for the kids and it’s great for them. The Foróige Fun Run takes place in Tymon Park on Saturday March 12th at 11am. To register visit popupraces.ie/ event.php?id=329

________________________ Easter comes but once a year; the only day where eating chocolate for breakfast is not only acceptable but almost mandatory. Here at The Square you will find lots of ‘egg-cellent’ fashions for the little ones to sport this Easter Sunday. We have put together some Easter bunny-approved outfits for both boys and girls, some smart ‘Sunday Best’ looks for the modern kiddies of today. While you may not be able to keep the chocolate off their faces, at least their cute clothes may distract from the smudges! Debenhams have it all to kit the kids out with really top quality styles that are both bright and fun. For the girls, it was an easy choice of fresh prints, these are a must for Springtime. Add in some pretty pastels for a winning combo. We went for some floral dresses with a smart cardigan worn over. To keep things young and fun, we paired these with some colourful light-up shoes. Skechers have a fantastic range of footwear in lots of colours. Pop on some frilly

socks that will look really girly peeping out from under the trainers. For an alternative to dresses there are some jumpsuits and short numbers for your Easter chicks too! For the little boys we went for some really classic looks. Smart, polo-inspired outfits, these clean cut but cool outfits are ones that little men will want to wear to look their best. A favourite of ours from the shoot was the check shirt with long shorts. A stylish number for occasions but comfortable for all the playing and running around that the chocolate-induced sugar rush will no doubt cause! The other look is made up of pieces that will fit in well in any boy’s wardrobe and can be worn again and again. The outfits are finished with comfy but dressy shoes. Whether it’s a day of family fun, an egg hunt or a special dinner we have the cutest ensembles that will have the munchkins looking pretty as a picture. Hop down to The Square for everything you could need for this year’s Easter Holidays. Special thanks to Treasured Dolls and Carriage Donn for some of the props we used for our Easter shoot!

___________________________ How can I rave enough about the brilliance that is this movie? Deadpool is 100% fun, in a selfaware, self-deprecating, ‘let’s have some craic with it’ superhero movie from the Marvel universe. The movie reportedly took 10 years to get made and has been Ryan Reynold’s baby and really, once you see it you couldn’t imagine anyone else could pull off the roll so well. While Deadpool is an origin movie, telling the back story to how former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson becomes the self-healing immortal ‘Merc with a Mouth’, it is done so in a way that you can’t help but enjoy. For starters, the story isn’t linear and has a heap of flash backs and voiceovers, but you still enjoy the muddle of it, especially as Deadpool continuously breaks ‘the fourth wall’ and talks directly to camera/audience throughout. Deadpool himself calls it a love story, but then changes his mind halfway through to call it a horror story as we see the pure torture he is subjected to, to make his genes mutate and turn him into ‘a monster’. Indeed there are both elements there, with his love interest Vanessa Carlysle (Morena Baccarat - Homeland) supporting him through his cancer diagnoses - the reason he subjects himself to ‘treatment’ in the first place. Once Wade becomes Deadpool, the story follows him trying to track down the man responsible for his monstrous
50 // #intallaght / TWEET US
deformation to look “like a testicle with teeth”, Ajax/Francis (Ed Skrein). The movie has plenty of in-jokes about the Marvel universe where X-Men also feature and even slags off Wolverine and Hugh Jackman in a number of different ways. While the only other Marvel characters you see are Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hilde) and Colossus (Stefan Kapičić) Wade/Deadpool reveals openly that the studio couldn’t afford any other characters! I think that the reason Deadpool is such a success is its constant ability to poke fun at itself and its downright filthy sense of humour. If you are easily shocked, this may not be the movie for you, but if you enjoy some naughty laughs and some fantastic action scenes, this is a must-see. Sure there’s some casual sexism (Vanessa is referred to as ‘some hot chick’) and it may not ‘honour’ the original character, but so what? It’s only a bit of fun and escapism, and anyone who takes it too seriously may have missed the whole point of this movie!

Triple 9 by RACHEL LYNCh

Do you enjoy fast moving action films? Triple 9 is a mustsee for you so.
Deadpool is such a success is due to its constant ability to poke fun at itself and its downright æNVJ[ UGPUG of humour
When a group of criminals (Norman Reedus, Aaron Paul, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Anthony Mackie) decide they want to up their game and pocket hundreds of thousands of dollars they decide that they must try to pull off one of the biggest heists in history. These criminals are clever and know that to succeed at such a challenging heist they must get higher powers on board. This is where the story really takes off, you have the Russian Mafia with Kate Winslet at the helm and corrupt police who are being blackmailed. Although many of the criminals just want their money and out of the situation as fast as possible, it’s the loose cannons amongst them that make for the most entertaining viewing. Their plan to take down an officer Chris Allen (Casey Affleck) to distract at least half of the force makes for some heart-stopping scenes and just when you think the criminals’ plan has been executed smoothly there are some fantastic twists that you will certainly not have seen coming.
Woody Harrelson also stars as a detective and Chris’ uncle Jeffrey. Triple 9 is one of the better action films I have seen in a while and surprisingly enough the storyline, although somewhat predictable in parts will keep you interested throughout. When I heard Kate Winslet was to play the role of the Russian Mafia head I was worried as the trailer doesn’t do her much justice on the accent front as Irina Vlaslov but credit where its due she isn’t the worst. Put it this way it’s nowhere near as bad as Gerard Butler’s Irish attempt in P.S. I love You!

The Survivalist by genna patterson
___________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGENNA
An intense, feardriven thriller. The Survivalist does many things; put the fear of God into you, keeps you tense the whole two hours and surprises you with its ending. It doesn’t however explain itself, which is absolutely fine but won’t give you any closure if you like to know all the little details! Set mostly in an unidentified woodland, a nameless man (the amazing Martin McCann) lives alone. He is scared and prepared for invasion, living off a small selfstarted farm. That is until a starving woman (Olwen Fouere) and her teenage daughter (Mia Goth) turn up looking for food and shelter. The woman offers her daughter’s body in return, and the man gives in, starved of human contact for seven years. The Survivalist is seemingly set in some sort of post apocalyptic future Ireland (the two women are from Monaghan we’re told), but we never find

out how or why any of this happened. Instead we are shown present day, as the three tensely circle each other to survive and meet their basic human needs, and minor flashbacks of the man’s brother who has since died. Filmed in Northern Ireland, the movie was written and directed by Northern Ireland-born Stephen Fingleton, who has picked up a number of accolades for his work on the film, including; Best Debut Director at the British Independent Film Awards, Best New Narrative Director and Special Jury Mention at Tribeca, and most recently, a nomination in the Outstanding Debut category of the British Academy Film Awards.

Traders by genna patterson
___________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGENNA
Traders is the latest Irish thriller starring Killian Scott (Love/ Hate) and John Bradley (Game of Thrones) as work colleagues Harry Fox and Vernon Stynes. In a financially unstable economy, their company goes under and both are left unemployed with debts mounting up. In a bid to make some money, Vernon decides to invent a high stakes game, or trade system where people can fight to the death for cash. Each person accepts the ‘trade’ on a website, meets and shows each other the cash and then travel by multiple buses to a remote place to fight to the death. Only one person leaves, with both bags of money! Sounds mad, but it works! For all its murderous scenes, Traders is actually injected with quite a bit of humour. Some scenes are graphic so be warned if you have a weak stomach,
or do like I did and look away for those bits and enjoy the rest! Killian Scott is a seasoned pro at violent roles since his stint on Love/Hate, however the same cannot be said for John Bradley. It’s hard to envision him as anything but Jon Snow’s buddy while Scott holds the screen just fine without Nidge or Fran. Expect a brilliant cameo from comedian Dave McSavage also! The best thing about Traders is that it doesn’t try to be an Irish thriller, and it could be set in any city, yet it still has the gloss of a well-made movie, far from a budget film or a ‘twee’ mockery of Dublin city.

A BIGGER SPLASH by RACHEL LYNCh
___________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL
Where to start with this one? I honestly do not know. From the very start to the final scene I really just did not know what to make of the entire film. Ok so it wasn’t dreadful but the storyline was pretty hard to follow. In the beginning we meet a couple – Marianne Lane (Tilda Swinton), a famous rock star, and her filmmaker boyfriend, Paul (Matthias Schoenaerts). The pair cannot keep their hands off one another so be prepared for some nude scenes along with some pretty full-on bedroom action, maybe one to miss with the mother or father! They are on holiday on the remote Italian island of Pantelleria, when an old friend of both makes an unexpected visit. Harry (Ralph Fiennes) who was once an old flame of Marianne’s and friend to Paul, hasn’t arrived alone, and has his daughter Penelope (Dakota
Johnson) with him, who he just found out about a year ago. It’s clear from the start that Harry has arrived with an ulterior motive and that is to drive a wedge between the couple and he has brought along his alluring daughter, Penelope to distract Paul. As films go this wasn’t dreadful, there were a few interesting twists in the storyline but overall it left me feeling like there should have been another hour to the movie just to explain it, but that said another hour added on and I wouldn’t have stayed till the end!

So it’s only March and already I am going to make a bold statement and say I don’t think I will see a funnier heart warming film this year that will top Sing Street. It’s been said by many that this Irish production is quite literally The Commitments but with a much younger cast. I have to say when I heard this I wasn’t too excited about seeing it as remakes of any shape or form of some of the greatest films rarely go down well. I was wrong though, Sing Street is no remake, it’s right out there on its own. The film takes us back to Dublin in the 1980’s during a recession and Conor’s parents have taken him out of his private school and sent him to an inner city public school. His older brother Brendan (Jack Reynor) is a college dropout who has always told Conor (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo) to follow his dreams as he never did. School life is tough for Conor until he sets his sights on
Raphina (Lucy Boynton) who calls herself a “model”. To impress her he sets up a band and asks her to star in the video. Calling himself “Cosmo” and immersing himself in the vibrant rock music trends of the ‘80s, he forms a band with a few lads all of whom bring some brilliant humor to the table. Mixed up in the love and heartbreak we begin to see a bond between Conor and Brendan. I was never really a fan of Reynor until this film, he plays the part well and there are some beautiful emotional scenes at the end of the film between the pair. I really cannot wait for this to hit cinemas so I can go see it again with my friends. If you enjoy films like The Van and The Snapper, Sing Street is a must-see for you. It also features a memorable soundtrack with hits from The Cure, Duran Duran, The Police, and Genesis Music fans will love it. In fact everyone will love it!

Nitro Circus Live Coming To Tallaght Stadium By Rachel Lynch ____________________________ Eurovision voting is changing in a big way this year By rachel lynch ____________________________ We already know former Westlife member Nicky Byrne is set to represent Ireland in this year’s Eurovision but it’s the news of a change in the voting that has lovers of the music show excited. The Eurovision over the years has received many complaints due to the voting system with neighbouring countries voting for one another, leaving many people questioning whether it is a music competition at all. This year things will be different as they are shaking up the voting format in a bid to keep viewers watching the yearly extravaganza until the very end. For the first time this year, the expert juries and televoters from each country will each award a separate set of points from one to eight, 10 and 12. The top 10 countries in both the jury and audience vote will receive points, with the respective scores being announced in two separate parts of the show. The change means the winner will now only be known in the final minutes of the contest. Will this change up help bring back the viewers? Who knows but its worth a try!
We have some really exciting news for not just Tallaght but Dublin and Ireland as the world’s greatest action sports show Travis Pastrana’s Nitro Circus Live will return to not just the UK but also Ireland for its first ever outdoor stadium tour. The world’s biggest live action sports show will visit 13 first-time markets including our very own Tallaght Stadium located in the heart of Tallaght on Saturday June 11th 2016. Tickets for the tour are on sale on Friday, February 19th from 10am via nitrocircus.live. Fans from across the UK and Ireland will be given the opportunity to see the most explosive event in extreme sports and witness death-defying stunts, amazing tricks and unbelievable world firsts that have yet to be seen (even in competition). Nitro’s cast of daredevils, the greatest action sports stars on the planet, will perform the most incredible choreographed riding routines ever in freestyle motocross (FMX), BMX, skate and much more. the explosive “Nitro Bomb” featuring all riders flipping simultaneously. Plus, during FMX trains, riders will slice through the air wheel-to-wheel, mere inches apart. All of this mayhem in one show, requiring more than 15 trucks and 50 crew members to transport and set up, adds up to a theatrical spectacular area fans have never experienced before. This will be one of the biggest, if not the most massive, entertainment production ever to come to venues across the UK and Ireland. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday, February 19th via nitrocircus.live
Publishing will all donate their respective proceeds from downloads of this special single to a series of international domestic abuse charity organisations which provide support to victims and survivors of domestic abuse while also engaging in advocacy and community outreach. The compelling video stars twotime Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan in a moving portrayal of a woman dealing with a physically abusive relationship. The clip also stars actor Moe Dunford (Vikings, Game Of Thrones) and is directed by Emmy winning Irish director Dearbhla Walsh.
Saoirse Ronan to star in another Ian McEwan adaptation ‘On Chesil Beach’ By Rachel Lynch ____________________________ Our very own Saoirse Ronan is just about everywhere these days. With Oscar nominations and just about every other award on the go she’s part of it all. Now she is set to take on another adaption of Ian McEwan’s On Chesil Beach. This is the second time Ronan will work with McEwan, the last time they worked together (Atonement) she was nominated for an Oscar. According to The Guardian: “The film will be
directed by Dominic Cooke, whose previous credits have mainly been in the theatre, where he was artistic director of the Royal Court. A co-star has not yet been announced. It is being produced by Number 9 Films, who were the driving force behind Carol and Youth.” The 2007 book, which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize, is set in the 60s and centres on a young couple honeymooning in Dorset.

The film based on the novel by Colm Tóibín, was a box office hit last year and is in the running for three Oscars at the end of the month, including Best Film, Adapted Screenplay and Best Actress for lead Saoirse Ronan. MUSIC
The live version is a stripped down, æPIGTRKEMKPI affair and it´s still just as evocative and charming without the addition of the cello Villagers Where Have You Been All My Life? by linn therese heldal
___________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTLINN
After only three releases and less than a year after he somewhat peaked with the alluring Darling Arithmetic, Conor O’Brien decided it was time for some live recordings. He was already touring Darling Arithmetic, so last summer he got his band together and spent a day in the famous RAK studios in London reinterpreting five years of material into a live form. Mainly first and second takes were used and the result is a beautiful collection of new versions of his own back catalogue, as well as a refined cover of Glen Campbell’s Wichita Lineman. The striking Set The Tigers Free from the debut album Becoming a Jackal is brought to life with layered backing vocals, while the piano ballad Everything I Am Is Yours is just as catchy as it was last year.
56 // #intallaght / TWEET US
The album contains a new version of Memoir, which O’Brien wrote for Charlotte Gainsbourg. He also did a version of it himself and I much prefer this new live version of the song - it feels like the live version shows the song the way it was supposed to be in the first place. Also, I always preferred his own version to Gainsbourg’s – her version is a bit too cabaret for my liking. The songs contain mainly brushed drums, a tactful synth, piano and an acoustic guitar. This makes the live version of That Day (of Becoming a Jackal) actually better than the original - again it feels as if this is the song’s natural state. The album title is taken from one of my favourite Villagers songs - the heart-warming The Soul Serene from Darling Arithmetic. The live version is a stripped down, fingerpicking affair and it’s still just as evocative and charming without the addition of the cello. O’Brien’s music is packed with melancholia, tenderness and direct emotions, and he has made his heartbreaks and ghosts into wonderful music, such as the courageous Hot Scary Summer (of Darling Arithmetic). The song addresses the important problem
of homophobia: “Remember kissing on the cobblestones/ In the heat of the night/ And all the pretty young homophobes/ Looking out for a fight.” Darling Arithmetic could be called O’Brien’s confessional album and the new version of Courage is just as powerful as the original with the additions of an energetic piano and synth. He gets straight to business with lyrics such as “It took a little time to get free/ It took a little time to be honest/ It took a little time to be me.” Musically O’Brien is always old fashioned and down to simplicity, but still, with a live session like this one there is nowhere to hide. In this intimate live setting O’Brien again shows his great vocal presence and that less is in fact more. He just captures with his alluring darkness and pure acoustic elegance and his soul is dancing with Paul Simon and Nick Drake. This is a smart move from O’Brien – for the fans it gives a hunger for new material and I’m also sure there are plenty of new listeners who will ask themselves exactly Where Have You Been All My Life? after discovering this live treasure chest of O’Brien’s cream of the crops.

Damn, just when you’re finished weeping over Hello, Adele releases her new single When We Were Young, which means you still have to go to the office all red and teary-eyed after listening to the radio during the morning’s bottleneck routine. Only last month, on February 5th did Adele release this follow up to her massive beauty Hello and you couldn’t possibly have missed the absolutely adorable picture on the single sleeve. Her heartache and pain still howls like the midwinters wind when she stunningly belts out: “Let me photograph you in this light/In case it is the last time/That we might be
exactly like we were/Before we realized/We were sad of getting old.” The song is set in the future where she looks at her life, loved ones and not so loved ones in retrospect: “You look like a movie/You sound like a song/My God/ This reminds me/Of when we were young.” Her future grief and sadness over what used to be gives chills in well-known Adele style: “And a part of me keeps holding on/Just in case it hasn’t gone/I guess I still care/Do you still care?” she sings. The song is also Adele advising us to make the most of life and live every day to the fullest, as she so deservingly seems to be doing herself these days. Once again this is perfect pop music with a gracious, solid and evergreen sound. It’s safe to say that with When We Were Young Adele has released yet another A-bomb!

The S7 is beautiful and Samsung has stayed with the tried and tested samsung galaxy S7 by COLM O’MUIRÍ ____________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM
The new Samsung Galaxy S7 was unveiled during the Mobile World Congress 2016 in February and it will be hitting shops within the next few weeks with a release date of March 11th. The price of the S7 is rather dear with a price tag of £569 which roughly equates to €729, at the time of writing no Euro price was available. However, there is no denying that what you get for that price is beautiful. The S7 is beautiful and Samsung has stayed with the tried and tested 5.1-inch QHD Super AMOLED display which is the same as the S6. This can be a bad thing but the picture quality and display are so good that it would have been tough to improve the screen. The screen resolution is 1,440 x 2,560, which is of such high quality that manufacturers are closing in on resolutions so sharp that a human eye will never be able to see the pixels. A camera is one of the most important features for phones especially for all those selfies and Snapchats and with the S7 you won’t be
58 // #intallaght / TWEET US
disappointed with the camera offered. The S7 comes with a dual pixel 12mp camera which is an improvement on what S6 users currently have. The camera is one of the best to ever come with a phone with Samsung stating that it is the “first smartphone camera to have a professional-grade Dual Pixel Sensor”. This means that your selfies and other photos will be crisp and clear even if taken at night or in the dark. The Samsung Galaxy S7 comes with a bigger battery with a full charge taking 90 minutes and although they say that the battery lasts a long time there are no specifics which is rather worrying.
Something which isn’t is that the S7 claims to be fully waterproof to a depth of 1.5 metres. Samsung also say that there is no need for any extra caps or covers for this to take effect and that they have figured out a way to make the phone waterproof even with the headphone jack and micro USB port exposed. Samsung’s Galaxy S7 comes with a dedicated area for games called Game Launcher. This is where you can store all your downloaded games as well as housing a host of tools which you can use to improve your gaming experience. Another feature of the S7 is that it can be paired with the Gear VR to give you a 360-degree virtual reality and gaming experience. Virtual reality and augmented reality headsets are expected to explode worldwide in the near future and this introduction to phones is only the first step. It will be interesting to see if Apple offer anything when the new iPhone arrives later in the year. For more information on the Samsung Galaxy S7 and to get a complete rundown of what you can expect from the phone visit Samsung.com.

TED 2016 by colm o’muirí
___________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM
TED 2016 took place recently from February 15th to 19th in Vancouver, Canada. This was the 27th annual event with the first TED taking place in 1984 and the yearly events starting in 1990. The theme of this year’s TED Talks was ‘Dreams,’ as in the dream of endless possibilities and what could come about in the future. HoloLens creator Alex Kipman took this theme and ran with it during his TED Talk when he showed the capabilities for teleportation in the future. Showcasing Microsoft’s augmented reality technology he was able to teleport NASA scientist Jeff Norris onto the TED stage with him. Alex Kipman was able to do this by using a camera hooked up to a HoloLens headset, these headsets will be going on sale this year for £2,000. Kipman believes that augmented reality will eventually replace computers, smartphones and laptop screens and following this showcase, he could be right. Kipman was not the only person during the TED conference to showcase the possibilities of an augmented reality with Meta founder Meron Gribertz doing the same. He was showing Meta’s headset which they believe could transform computing and communication. The Meta headset reminds me of the one from the Minority Report movie because with this headset the digital content is superimposed over the user’s view which they can then manipulate using their hands. The headset can also be used to make phone calls whilst being able to see the person in 3D, which to me seems like a much better way of communicating than Facetime or Skype.
ALEX KIPMAN AT TED
Although the headsets are quite big and bulky at the moment (resembling the head of Alpha 5 from Power Rangers or an oversized pair of IMAX glasses), this is expected to change. Gribertz stated that he expects the headsets to shrink over the coming years and that within five years they will be the same size as a thin piece of glass. But perhaps one of the most amazing displays of the week wasn’t to do with augmented reality or virtual reality but actually showcasing the unending possibilities of drone technology. Inside a packed convention centre that doesn’t allow indoor flights, Raffaello D’Andrea of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology launched a tiny squadron of computer controlled drones in a choreographed aerial light show. This was brilliant especially considering how big some of the other drones were when compared with the tiny
SAMSUNG MODULAR TV CONCEPT
ones that looked to be the size of a cricket in the dark convention centre. Although that was definitely the highlight of his TED Talk the part that was really quite brilliant was the flying wing that can hover and recover from a disturbance and can glide safely back down to ground without incurring any more damage. Whether or not this technology could be put into aircrafts in the future remains to be seen but if it could it would make flying an even safer journey for everyone. This is just a small amount of what happened during this year’s amazing TED Talk 2016, for more information on the event and videos of the talks visit TED.com to see some of the other amazing showcases which occurred this year.

GAME
UFC 2
by colm o’muirí
___________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM
UFC 2 is the third mixed martial arts game that EA have done. The first being the truly awful 2010 video game EA Sports MMA and the second being their first UFC game which wasn’t much better. EA Sports took the rights for the UFC game from THQ and their popular UFC Undisputed series. The UFC Undisputed series featured two very good sports games and one okay game in UFC Undisputed 3. Hopefully EA can put together a good MMA game, or at least one good sports game for the next-gen consoles as the majority have been poor. One thing that EA do well is graphics and that was something which UFC 1 had in abundance and EA UFC 2 is much the same. The presentation looks amazing with the prefight introductions looking crisp with Bruce Buffer and
60 // #intallaght / TWEET US
the referees looking great, while Dana White on the other hand is very poor. CM Punk, Conor McGregor, Nate Diaz, Alistair Overeem and Junior Dos Santos are all in the game as is InTallaght Columnist and Tallaght native Paddy “The Hooligan” Holohan. These are just a few of the 250 fighters who will be available in the game with some non-MMA fighters also making appearances such as Bruce Lee and Mike Tyson. A feature of EA games that has become hugely popular is the Ultimate Team concept, and this is in UFC 2. They have adapted the feature to make it fit for MMA with the user making their own team of up to five fighters in which they can compete online and offline to earn coins to earn moves and attributes to improve the fighters in their stable. A new feature of UFC 2 is knockout mode which looks to be a fun mode for those who want to slug it out as their favourite fighters until one fighter is knocked out. This game mode will be quite popular with online gamers and those who like “bash-em-up” games
such as Tekken and Mortal Kombat. It also negates one of the worst aspects of MMA games which is grappling and which has been very poor in the majority of MMA games, yet is one of the most exciting aspects of MMA. EA Sports UFC 2 is out on March 17th, St Patricks Day, for the Xbox One and the PS4. The game will cost you €74.99 in HMV/Xtravision and Gamestop whereas in Smyths it will set you back €64.99. 4.99.
Tom Clancy’s The Division by colm o’muirí
__________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM
Tom Clancy’s The Division is an upcoming online open world third-person shooter roleplaying video game. The game begins on Black Friday when a smallpox pandemic sweeps across New York City and in only a matter of days all basic services fail and society collapses into chaos. Following this collapse and the lack of food or wat water, an autonomous group of tactical agents is activated and deployed to age save society. As the game says “When sav society falls, your mission begins.” soc You are part of the Strategic Homeland Division (SHD) or Ho The Division for short, who lead seemingly ordinary lives but are see trained to operate independently trai wh when the time comes. As the game progresses a worldwide conspiracy pro becomes clearer and you are tasked bec with stopping the virus from wit spreading and to neutralise those who spr unleashed it. unl Like most first-person shooters you will be able to carry three weapons and explosives at any given wea
time to make your way through the game. One of the explosives you can use is a smart mine which when deployed skids across the floor, homing in on its target before finally exploding when it reaches it. One of the main features of The Division is the Dark Zone, this is where gamers go head to head in a competitive multiplayer mode and where you will discover a lot of the best weapons the game has to offer. This is separate from the main campaign and as such it has its own progression system. In the Dark Zone gamers can improve both their level and ranking however, your ranking and level can also fall dramatically there if you are killed frequently and too quickly in this part of the game. You don’t have to be alone when you enter the Dark Zone as you can be accompanied by several co-operative partners, although you must learn not to trust them too much as these agents can turn on you at any time by going rogue and trying to kill you. Tom Clancy’s The Division looks like
a truly entertaining video game and it will be released on March 8th on the PS4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows. The Division is priced at €74.99 in Gamestop and €64.99 in HMV/Xtravision and Smyths for both the PS4 and Xbox One.

ŠKODA Octavia by RACHEL LYNCh
____________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL
We at InTallaght Magazine popped down the road to Pilsen Auto in Ballymount to check out their range of new and used vehicles this week. The garage specialise in providing the dynamic brand ŠKODA. ŠKODA is one of the top ten bestselling car brands in Ireland, and is renowned for its excellent quality and range such as the Fabia, Octavia, Yeti, Rapid and new Superb. Additionally the ŠKODA Octavia was named one of the top five cars in Ireland in January 2016. This week we took a 2015 ŠKODA Octavia Elegance for a test drive and I have to say I was highly impressed by not just the smooth drive but also the contemporary, attractive interior and of course a super sleek exterior. The ŠKODA Octavia really is in a class of its own, the model shape is recognisable and design will certainly catch your attention with its unique sharp cut edges and clearly modelled surfaces. This model is a 1.6 TDI Race Blue in colour and it’s made to turn heads. The exterior features a dominating front grille with a chrome frame, the shape of which subtly highlights the ŠKODA logo. The headlamps also echo the grilles sporty style. The rear lights, the illumination of which creates a double C letter are another recognised characteristic of the car and impossible to overlook. The interior of the ŠKODA Octavia is second to none – with a fresh, upmarket look that will stand the test of time. Everything is sensibly placed, neatly laid out and solidly screwed together, with plenty of soft touch materials.

With parking sensors, touch screen radio, cruise control, USB port and heated and folding mirrors to name a few of its perks, it ensures that the driver is comfortable and has everything to hand for any drive. The drive itself was a smooth experience, with light and accurate steering, seamless gear change and a powerful engine. It occurred to me immediately this is a perfect car for both the everyday errand and also longer trips that require more weight. Pilsen Auto offer financing that can suit all its customers with an amazing 0% Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) on selected 2015 ŠKODA models. Currently they are the only dealer in Dublin who can offer 0% PCP on used vehicles in Dublin! Their used fleet all come fully serviced, valeted and with a manufacturer’s warranty. Big news for Pilsen Auto in the next few months is they are getting a new
home! Currently based in Crosslands Business Park, they will be moving to a brand new, state of the art ŠKODA facility recently built in M50 Business Park, Dublin 12. The new showroom is expected to open in the next few months, they’re awaiting the final tweaks before completion. For more information on the ŠKODA Octavia and for more information on their big move contact Pilsen Auto on (01) 4602111 or go online, pilsen.ie

ITTSU UPdate by JESSICA WALL
____________________________ EMAIL SUPRES@ITTDUBLIN.IE
The Spring Semester is well underway here at IT Tallaght. The Students’ Union team and I have been busy with campaigns and events with plenty more to come during the rest of the semester. The clubs and societies in the college have been extremely busy over the last couple of weeks and they have all been doing us proud. The Senior Hurling team have qualified for the Fitzgibbon weekend which will be held in Cork on February 26th and 27th. The lads will play Queens University Belfast in the semifinal of the Ryan Cup. This is a massive achievement for the GAA Club and they have had good success in previous years having won the Fergal Maher Cup on three occasions. On behalf of ITT SU, I would like to wish the hurlers the very best of luck with the rest of the competition. The soccer team have also made great progress; the ladies team reached the Challenge Cup Semi Final against IT Tralee, having beat Trinity College Dublin 2-1. The Senior Men’s Soccer Team and also the Men’s B Team both reached the Cup Semi Final Stages. The IT Tallaght Men’s Rugby team beat NUI Galway 52-28 which put them into the league final where they will play against IT Carlow. The Archery Club had great success at the National Student Indoor Championships in Cork where IT Tallaght was very well represented on the podium. They managed to bring home two National Titles and they won five silver medals across five different categories. Meanwhile the Radio Society ran a very successful Radio Week from February 1st to 5th. They broadcasted for 33 hours in aid of Denise Ryan, a past student of IT Tallaght who needs to raise funds for treatment of lyme disease and was a past member of the Radio Society when attending the

The clubs and societies in the college have been extremely busy over the last couple of weeks and they have all been doing us proud college. Radio Week as a whole had a lot of exciting events and broadcasts as well as great giveaways and competitions for students to enter. I would like to say a big well done to all involved with ITT FM on the success of the entire week as a whole. We had our annual Raise and Give (RAG) Week from February 8th
to 12th. Overall, the week was very successful with a lot of on campus entertainment for the students. Our Mystery Bus Tour took place on Thursday of this week. This is an event that is enjoyed every year by the students and this year we travelled to The Palace Nightclub in Navan and The Imperial Nightclub in County Cavan. IT Tallaght Students’ Union’s Sexual Health Awareness and Guidance (S.H.A.G) Week also took place from February 22nd to 26th. We had a lot of workshops and events organised for the week to help promote the importance of safe sex. During the week, we aimed to help overcome the stigma that is often involved around these important issues. There will be more to follow and pictures of S.H.A.G Week in the next edition of InTallaght Magazine. BOOK
AUTHOR EMMA DONOGHUE
frog music by Gwen cotter
____________________________ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGWEN
Author Emma Donoghue is having a great year - her novel Room was transferred to screen and has garnered a whole host of film nominations and awards. Her next book Frog Music however is an entirely different tale, based loosely on true events. I’d been meaning to read Frog Music by Emma Donoghue since I heard her interviewed on the Roisin Meets Podcast by Irish columnist Roisin Ingle. The premise of Room seemed a little too bleak for me to read (about a woman and her child held captive in a soundproof shed) but it was obvious that Donoghue was a talented writer. Frog Music is set in San Francisco in 1876 where a stifling heat wave and smallpox epidemic have engulfed the

city. Deep in the streets of Chinatown live three former stars of the Parisian circus: Blanche, now an exotic dancer at the House of Mirrors, her lover Arthur and his companion Ernest. When an eccentric outsider joins their little circle, secrets unravel, chasing everything and leaving one of them dead. The blurb on the back of the book describes it as “inspired by true events… an evocative novel of intrigue and murder: elegant, erotic and witty”, and it certainly is. This is one of the best novels I’ve read in the past year, I can tell by the speed with which I flew through its 373 pages (in less than five days) and how much I’ve been thinking about the characters when not reading. They even appeared in my dreams at night! America was still finding its feet in the mid 1800’s and there seems to have been a whiff of the wild west and adventure still in the air in the big bustling city of San Francisco. The Californian Gold Rush was within recent memory and as Blanche comments in the book, it was America’s most foreign
city, bursting with immigrants of all different colours and creeds. I didn’t realise as I read the book, but it is based on a real-life murder. It opens on two women in a rough shack at the edge of the city, hiding out. Blanche Beunon is a French burlesque dancer, and the other is Jenny Bonnet, a petty criminal who dresses in men’s clothes and makes a living catching frogs. A shotgun is fired through a curtained window, Jenny is killed, while Blanche is miraculously spared. The narrative then moves along two lines: back through Blanche and Jenny’s growing friendship leading up to the murder, and forward following Blanche’s attempts to unravel just who Jenny was and who killed her in its aftermath. The structure works to keep us guessing who exactly killed Jenny, and whether or not they had been aiming for Blanche. But, the murder mystery is simply a means to ratchet up the tension, the real subject of the book is how these two independentminded women sought to make lives for themselves in the corrupt world of a San Francisco emerging from the lawless frontier, but still far from a city of law and order. Donoghue paints a vivid exciting world, perilous and intriguing in equal measures. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading more of her books!

The CAP-Indie Book Awards 2016
The CAP-Indie Book Awards 2016 by GENNA PATTERSON @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGENNA
The first ever independent book awards have been launched by local author Carolann Copland. InTallaght explores what this means for self-published authors. Local author Carolann Copland has set up the first ever awards for independent authors, called The Carousel Aware Prize for Independently Published Authors or CAP Indie awards for short. Carolann runs a writers’ centre, called Carousel Creates (thus the name of the awards) up in the Dublin Mountains at Killakee Road, Rathfarnham, for writers of all ages, offering them “a life-enhancing experience in relaxed settings”. Carolann is a teacher and writes novels herself. Her first book, Summer Triangle was published by Emu Ink in 2013, followed by Scarred launched in June 2015 while her third novel in the trilogy is currently underway. Carolann thinks that self-publishing is changing the face of publishing worldwide and that Ireland could do with “a little nudge to help it along.” She says, “The idea for the awards came to me in the summer of 2015. Although I had experienced publishing and selling my first novel, it was just as hard to get the self-published book out there and into the shops the second time around […] Nationally I think we’re taking things a lot slower. Many Irish authors are saying that they might take the plunge into independent publishing but few are jumping.”

AUTHOR JAX MILLER, CAROUSEL CREATES FOUNDER CAROLANN COPLAND & EMU INK’S EMER CLEARY AT THE LAUNCH OF CAROLANN’S BOOK “SCARRED”
The CAP awards aims to acknowledge independently published and self-published authors and bring them to the attention of bookshops, distributors and the media both here and abroad. They are sponsored by local assisted publishers Emu Ink and Books Ireland Magazine, who are celebrating 40 years since their inception this year. Emu Ink Publishing Founder, Emer Cleary, says: “The CAP Awards for Independent Authors is a fantastic initiative for a very good cause. Over the past number of years we have had the privilege of working with some of the most talented writers in the country – those who had the foresight to go down the assisted publishing route – and these are the type of writers who deserve to be acknowledged within an ever-changing industry. The publishing world plays host to all types of writers these days and so many of the independently published authors deserve as much recognition as the traditional ones. I can’t praise Carolann Copland, a very talented writer herself,
enough for making this happen and the fact that Aware will also benefit is the icing on the cake.” The cost of entry per book is €50, and all proceeds, as Emer says, go to Aware, the organisation that aims to educate and empower people to look after their mental health. Carolann says she chose Aware “because I have watched the work that they do with those suffering from mental health problems and am in awe of their achievements. Gerry O’Brien and Sandra Hogan from Aware headquarters have been hugely supportive of the project. We are spending some of the submission money at the moment on advertising, but as sponsors are coming on board we hope to allow them to take the financial strain of the awards and to put all the submission money into the coffers of Aware.” Tony Canavan of Books Ireland Magazine says the fact that proceeds go to Aware appealed to him too. “Aware is an organisation that is close to my heart as mental health is an issue that affects
us all in one way or another, and the more people are open about this issue, then the easier it is for us as a society to face up to it. I am also a keen supporter of the independent publishing sector and think it’s high time that these authors got the recognition they deserve so congratulations to all at Carousel for taking this initiative.” There will be six categories of awards: • Best Novel to be judged by International Bestselling Author Jax Miller. • Best Short Story Anthology to be judged by Bord Gáis Award Winning Author Louise Phillips. • Best Non-Fiction Book to be judged by Books Ireland Magazine Editor Tony Canavan
• Best Poetry Anthology to be judged by Award Winning Poet and Writer Eileen Casey. • Best Young Adult Book to be judged by Bestselling Young Adult Novelist Claire Hennessy. • Best Junior Book to be judged by Novelist Carolann Copland in conjunction with St. Colmcille’s Junior National School, Knocklyon. All Independently Published, SelfPublished and Assisted Published Authors from Ireland’s 32 counties, can submit between Monday January 11th and Friday April 29th. You can submit a print or e-book copy of your book, once it has been published within the last five years and you live in one of the 32 counties of Ireland.
CAROUSEL CREATES
All book submissions must also have a ISBN or equivalent number too. The long list will be out in June, the shortlist in September and the awards, where winners will be announced, will be in October. For more information, visit the website writingcap.ie. Carolann will be writing a monthly column for InTallaght about the process of the awards, which will feature in our News section from April until September. She says that there will also be associated fundraising events for Aware during the year. “As part of the initiative, and to focus on the connection between writing and mental health, we will be holding Writing for Wellbeing Workshops and Sponsored Write-athons during the year with all money raised going to Aware.”

Harvey Norman EQPæTOGF HQT new premises on Airton Road By genna patterson ________________________ South Dublin County Council has confirmed the go-ahead of retailer Harvey Norman at a new premises on the Airton Road, Tallaght. Harvey Norman had submitted plans for the alteration of a previously developed retail park with the addition of four areas of mezzanine floors within the existing building for use as staff, ancillary and equipment accommodation last year. Coffee chain
Costa Coffee will also be located on the site in a 218sqm cafe with outdoor seating. There had been two objections against the plans by Robert Roberts and PKB Partnership, both who have neighbouring buildings near the site. Concerns were for the additional traffic that the new businesses will cause, as well as the location of the entrance. South Dublin County Council approved the plans on January 11th, but attached conditions including the downsizing of the size of proposed signage and a totem pole in line with nearby businesses in the area, as well as permission granted for use of the car park by both of the retail establishments and the primary care centre. The car park will hold 257 car parking spaces and 42 cycle park stands.
Local Enterprise 6QWVJ 'WDNKP 2HæEG offering small business loans with MFI By genna patterson ________________________ The Local Enterprise South Dublin Office is encouraging more small businesses to consider microfinance for their business. Local Enterprise Offices have a partnership with Microfinance Ireland (MFI) who had a record number of loan applications and approvals in 2015. MFI offer business loans of €2,000 to €25,000 through the Local Enterprise
Office South Dublin. They offer a preferential interest rate and flexibility on repayment terms on the loan for companies with less than 10 employees and a turnover of less than €2m. MFI, the State backed not-for-profit lender to micro-businesses, announced a record 48% rise in the number of loan applications during 2015, with a total of 752 businesses applying for loans in 2015, compared with 508 applications for the previous year. Approvals for start-ups, sole traders and small businesses also reached an all-time high in 2015 with the lender approving €5.4 million in funding to 357 businesses across every county in Ireland throughout 2015, lending that supported the creation of 930 jobs last year.
RTÉ hopes to raise €50 million from selling some of its Dublin headquarters By Rachel lynch ________________________ The state broadcaster needs the money to invest in its television facilities and technology. Its property in Donnybrook is valued at €12 million to €15 million a-hectare. Last year Communications Minister Alex White published a review of RTE’s finances, titled NewEra, due to the stations fall in advertising revenue since the recession. The NewEra report found 40% of the Donnybrook site is either undeveloped or used as a car park. It stated that “Use of the Donnybrook site is not optimal. Options concerning the site should be developed with robust analysis of costs and benefits – all options should be considered, from no sale of the site, partial sale of the site, full sale/land swap.” The station has been cashstrapped in recent years and has lost
out on broadcasting many future major sporting events due to its lack of money. The report said the amount of office space for the 1,530 staff is above average for a modern building. “RTÉ could consider selling the site in its entirety to move to a new location as there is no imperative, in our view, that it need remain in Donnybrook,” it adds. After reviewing the report RTÉ brought in property dealers CBRE and accountants KPMG last year to advise it on its options, one of which was said to be selling the entire site and moving to a new home. The Chairman of the Oireachtas Communication Committee also urged RTÉ to seriously consider selling off some of the land surrounding its headquarters in Donnybrook.

Buying A House In Tallaght Part 1 by EBS Tallaght ________________ Reasonable prices and a huge selection of homes are the main attractions of Dublin 24. Prices range from a €99,000 3-bed in Jobstown, Tallaght, to €395,000 for a 4-bed semi in Ballycullen, Firhouse. In between, there are plenty of bargain buys, says Brian Carey, manager of the local EBS branch. “The new Central Bank mortgage rules don’t present a problem for buyers seeking a mortgage to buy a house in many parts of Tallaght. Most suitable properties are close enough to the €220,000 threshold for First Time Buyers (to require no more than a 10% deposit)”, he explains. “And many are not so dear that trader uppers have a problem coming up with 20% of the property value.”
MAJOR CHANGES IN TALLAGHT The Dublin 24 area has undergone massive changes in recent decades. Tallaght was a village in 1966 with a population of 2,476. Now
76 // #intallaght
it’s home to over 71,500 people and there are calls to officially designate it a city. If so, it would be the fifth biggest in Ireland, just behind Galway. The area has also undergone sweeping changes in its fortunes and facilities since the 80s and 90s. It was rebuilt around a civic square that hosts the County Hall as well as a library, theatre and the 4-storey arts building Rua Red. Tallaght also became home to a major hospital, the National Basketball Arena, and Tallaght Stadium, where Shamrock Rovers FC play. Tallaght property prices dropped as much as everywhere else in the financial crash. But a 2014 survey by the Real Estate Alliance showed it has picked up more than most recently. REA report that “although the rate of increase has slowed after a meteoric rise in Tallaght, the price of a 3-bed semi in the Dublin 24 suburb has increased by 37.5% since the start of the year (one of the biggest rises anywhere in Ireland).” It should be stressed that rise was from a low base and there are still relative bargains to be had compared to elsewhere in South Dublin.

So I have been very busy the last few weeks. I got awarded my brown belt off John Kavanagh who is the same coach I have been with for about 10 years now. Some people get it earlier in life, some protégés, but the average is 10 years. It took me two years to get from a white belt to a blue belt, and then from a blue belt to a purple belt it took me about three years and then I have been a purple belt for about five years. The longest distance is between a purple belt and a brown belt and then to go from the brown belt to the black belt is only about two years. It’s a great honour, I hope to be about 27 when I finally get that so it will be incredible. My own coach I think got it at 35 years of age so I’ll be very young. That’s been the last few weeks but also I have been busy with the new SBG gym. There is so much to do at the minute from the fire safety to the planning alone is costing a lot of money. So far we are at the planning part so we are changing over the use of the building and all that. I think it used to be retail so we have to change that. The minute we get that we get the planning permission sign up, as soon as that’s cleared then the builders go in and that will take them about two and a half months to kit it out and then we are set up. This time will only feel like weeks compared to the years ahead so I’m

looking forward to that. To bring this to Tallaght and to be able to create jobs, to open it here it’s a big achievement and it’s in my hometown. I’ll never leave here, this is where I’m from, this is where I’ll set up shop and this is where I’ll retire to. I will keep you up to date on the rest of this story as the weeks and months go on.
ELECTION ENERGY It’s been a very political couple of weeks, it’s crazy to see the people that are in this type of political position think that they will change peoples’ minds by sticking 100 posters of the same face in a line down the road in a row, but that’s just my observation of it. The most posters that go up the more votes you get, sad thing is it works. Some of the people you see coming up like the Anti-Austerity Party, one
To bring this to Tallaght and to be able to create jobs, to open it here it’s a big achievement and it’s in my hometown of the candidates, Sandra would have been a teacher in the school. She’s from the same place as where we are from, I don’t think they are mature enough yet as a party to go into that big huge position but with a bit more experience they will definitely grow. Sandra’s a great person from the community and she’s from Jobstown.
Sarah Holland is also someone else I would like to stand by. She has a lot of history, I know her story about her father and it’s inspiring to see someone want to get up and do something and change the situation. I definitely feel with Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael it has to change, from my sport alone I think you learn a lot about the whole world. It’s individually you against somebody else in society and they could be from a rough area or a nice area, there are intelligent people that fight and unintelligent people that fight and you can see the way people react in adversity. I would really love to see Sinn Fein get a shot.
BACK IN ACTION I mentioned in the last edition about my back injury, but I’m back sparring, everything is going great. A lot of the guys that come out of my team, all the small guys that have all been working together for a long time, 10 of them are fighting in BAMMA in the 3Arena this Saturday. People from the other side, people see the fighters coming out but the hardest part is being in that dressing room. It’s a long day, last weekend we drove to Northern Ireland for two hours. Went up, four of the guys fought, four of the guys won and then you drive two hours home. It’s about an hour each fight so it’s pretty exhausting and the sad thing is there is no commission for these guys. These lads are funding all of this themselves and you’re funding it in a way too because you’re driving up there, they aren’t getting paid because it’s amateur. These guys are all number one and number two in the country and in Europe and the only way they make money is if they turn pro, if they get to the UFC level they will make the money. This is a whole new sport, it’s a game changer, it changes people. I wouldn’t even call it a job, it’s more of a hobby as there isn’t enough money in it for it to be a job at the moment unless you are fighting in the UFC and that’s everyone’s dream and aspirations.
Finally on the list I have been looking at Croatia which is in April for the UFC event, there is one in Rotherham and then in Vegas in July so it’s all kind of up in the air at the minute. Main thing for me is getting healthy and that disc in my back is my main priority. I’m still on that path to get to that belt, there are only three or four fights in between me fighting for the title and maybe someday I can bring that back here to Tallaght.
This is a whole new sport, it’s a game changer, it changes people

St Pats and Bohs Preview for the Season Ahead By colm o’muirí ____________________________ The new season of the SSE Airtricity League kicks off on Friday March 4th and we here at InTallaght decided to preview the year by looking at the upcoming season for Dublin’s two other Premier Division sides. Bohemians FC and St Patricks Athletic are the only other two Dublin teams currently competing in the top flight of Irish soccer along with Shamrock Rovers. UCD and Shelbourne are both starting the season in the first division with aspirations of hopefully pushing on and re-joining the rest of the Dublin sides in the top flight. St Patricks Athletic kick off this year’s campaign by hosting Galway United at the Stadium of Light, Richmond Park. The Saints will be hoping to reclaim the league trophy having last won it in 2013. Pats have had a good few years since Liam Buckley retook the helm in Inchicore with the highlight of his reign so far coming in 2014 when Pats won the FAI Cup with a victory over Derry City, ending a 53-year wait for the club. Pats have lost some important players in the offseason with the highest profile departure being Killian Brennan who re-joined Shamrock Rovers for this season. Following a successful few years in Inchicore, Brennan will hope that his stay in Tallaght this year will be better than his last. Christy Fagan, Ian Bermingham, Ger O’Brien, Brendan Clarke and Conan Byrne all re-signed with St Pats which is a major plus for Liam Buckley. They also strengthened with new signings Billy Dennehy, Mark Timlin and David Cawley who will be hoping to help the Inchicore side to more silverware this season. Bohemians will be hopeful of a good year having finished in fifth place last year just five points off of fourth place St Pats. They face a difficult start to the league this year with an opening fixture

RAFAEL DOS ANJOS HAS BEEN FORCED TO WITHDRAW FROM NEXT WEEK’S MUCH-ANTICIPATED FIGHT WITH CONOR MCGREGOR. IS THE BRAZILIAN SIMPLY SCARED OF OUR MAN, TWITTER CERTAINLY THINKS SO!

against Cork City down in Turners Cross on March 4th. The following week they host Sligo for the opening fixture of the season in Dalymount before they square off in their first Dublin derby of the year in Inchicore against St Patricks Athletic on Monday March 14th. Those are three very difficult fixtures for the Northside club and their season could be looking very promising if they manage to take points from all three games to open the season. Keith Long will be hoping to build on last year’s good finish for Bohs and push on this season as it has been a while since they won silverware. Bohemians last tasted success in the league in 2009, winning it for the eleventh time. The same year they won the League Cup before capturing the Setanta Cup in 2009/2010. Hopefully we will have an exciting League of Ireland this year following two years of dominance from Dundalk who will be favourites to retain it. Cork will also be hoping to be in the mix this time around having finished second last year. For all the latest Shamrock Rovers news throughout the season check out the InRovers section of InTallaght Magazine. We will also be keeping you up to date on the other Dublin teams in the LOI in the sport section throughout the year.
@DaveOGrady1 McGregor and Anjos is off! Who will step up to the plate? #UFC #MMA
@breevil I’m surprised they have children in Brazil considering the men are so fond of pulling out. #dosanjos #Mcgregor #UFC196
@JayRussellMMA RDA is not scared of McGregor. I think McGregor’s opponents train with too much anger thinking about him and they hurt themselves.
@MikeBohnMMA Mike Bohn Retweeted Ariel Helwani Pretty nuts, but not coincidence. Part of McGregor’s strength is he riles opponents to train so hard they get hurt.
@FootyAccums Conor McGregor’s fight v Dos Anjos is off! Broken foot for the Brazilian, wounded
@hectorirl Ahhhhh here !!!! Not again ...No fight ... a Brazilian Broken Foot ...McGregor v Dos Anjos
@jackbrolly95 I bet McGregor would fight with a broken foot

Ballyboden in the Club Football Championship on Paddy’s Day By Colm O’Muirí ___________________ Ballyboden will be busy this St Patricks Day when they take to the pitch in Croke Park to try and claim their very first AllIreland Senior Club Football Championship. It was a dramatic semifinal for the Tallaght men who needed extra time to beat Clonmel Commercials back in February. With both sides having scored 10 points in regulation time Ballyboden scored five unanswered points in extra
Local Teams Announce New Sponsors By Colm O’Muirí ____________________ St Anne’s GAA and Round Towers GAA have announced new sponsors for some of their sides for the year ahead. Two of Round Towers thriving junior teams the under 13’s and the U12 boys Hurling and Football will have new sponsors for the year ahead. The Under 13’s are being sponsored by AutoClass Motor Company and the U12 boys Hurling and Football will be sponsored by Reilly’s Life Pharmacy.
time to book their place in Croke Park. The Tallaght side will take on Mayo’s Castlebar Mitchels after they beat Crossmaglen Rangers in the late fixture on semi-final day. It was another tight affair up until the end when the decisive point was scored in the 58th minute by Castlebar Mitchels Barry Moran to give them a 0-13 to 0-12 victory over Crossmaglen. Tickets for the final will be available from early March with tickets on sale from Ballyboden at a discounted rate for fans. Hopefully they can pack out Croke Park to support the lads and create a blue and white fortress for Ballyboden on the day and bring the AllIreland Senior Club Football Championship to Tallaght.
AutoClass will be sponsoring the team for the 2016 season, with the company also providing wider sponsorship for the club already. Reilly’s Life Pharmacy will provide the Under 12’s team with jerseys and training gear which will hopefully last the test of time like the pharmacy who have been serving the Clondalkin community for over 50 years. St Anne’s have also recently announced that their Junior 7 team for the new 2016 season will be sponsored by Murphy and Mullan. This is great news for all the sides and sponsorship plays a major part in the juvenile game and it is great to see continued support for the future stars of the game.

New Season, Fresh Start by padraig conlon ____________________________ March is here and hope springs eternal! After what has seemed like the longest close season ever Rovers kick off their SSE Airtricity League campaign this month. The fixture computer has decided to send The Hoops all over the country with trips to Sligo, Donegal and Cork all scheduled for the next few weeks. Having spent three weeks of their preseason in India however last month the lads should be well able for the road. Rovers gave a good account of themselves at the Nagjee Cup reaching the semi final and unluckily losing 1-0 to Brazilian club Atletico Paranaense after hitting the bar three times. Prior to that they had notable victories against the 1860 Munich under 21 team, the Argentina under 23s and it seems both management and players found the whole trip extremely beneficial to their preparations. Manager Pat Fenlon spoke very positively about their three weeks in the sub continent with the weather, the quality of the opposition and the chance to build team spirit all being cited as excellent reasons for making the trip. “The competition has been fantastic,” he said. “From a fitness point of view it has been very warm during the games, 28-30 degrees, 75-80% humidity, so it’s been difficult for the players but we have been able to get some quality training sessions in and to get the players to gel together, as we have a few new players in. When you come away for a couple of weeks, you get to know each other fairly well so it’s been great from that point of view as well. The squad we have is quite strong, we’re happy with it and we’re looking forward to the season with the players we have in the club at the moment.”

“The games that we have played should hopefully have brought the players on leaps and bounds in relation to their match sharpness and fitness. We have been able to work them really hard in the days that we have had off as well. We’re hoping that we are going to get big benefits but we won’t really know until the season starts. I’ve taken teams away before and it’s always gone quite well, and hopefully this is no different.” Defender David O’Connor was also glowing in his assessment of what was a unique pre-season trip. Writing during the tournament he said: “The three games we have played have all been of the type of competitive nature that can only stand us in good stead, as the first week of March creeps ever so slowly closer. The game against Argentina epitomised this. From the outset there was a definite edge to proceedings, with the type of tackles, tension and taunting that is not often associated with a preseason friendly. “The quality of opponent and the conditions and 30 degree heat, will be of invaluable benefit for us in our pre-season preparations.” So what can fans expect of the season ahead? Will the additions of Killian Brennan, Gary Shaw and Dean Clarke help push The Hoops towards a first league title since 2011? The gauntlet has been thrown down by Dundalk over the last two seasons and Rovers will probably also have to overcome the challenges of Cork City and Pats if they are to scale the summit again. There is enough quality in The Hoops squad to win the league and hopefully they will have more luck with injuries than they did last season. Defensively I think they will be as strong as last year and upfront the options are excellent with Brandon Miele, Mikey Drennan, Danny North, all capable of contributing plenty of goals. Whatever happens you can guarantee there will be plenty of talking points over the next seven months. Bring it on!
Historic Moments by padraig conlon ____________________________ This month marks the 90th anniversary of Ireland’s first ever international football match and four Shamrock Rovers started the historic game. On Sunday March 21st, 1926, in front of a crowd of 12,000 in the Motovelodromo, Turin, the Irish Free State football team took to the field to face an Italian side in a friendly. Lining out for the visitors were Hoops players Dinny Doyle, John “Kruger” Fagan, JJ Flood and the legend Bob Fullum. Ireland teams had been competing since the 1880’s and up until 1924 Ireland was represented by one team run by the Belfast-based IFA. Following partition a Dublin-based organisation known as the FAIFS (Football Association of the Irish Free State) split from the IFA and began organising its own league and national team. In 1923, the FAIFS was recognised by FIFA as the governing body of the Irish Free State and at the 1924 Olympics the Irish Free State made their international debut. However the status of the Olympic Games football competition was later downgraded and as a result this game in Turin is widely regarded as Ireland’s first official game.

A SUCCESSFUL PRE-SEASON FOR THE HOOPS IN INDIA WINS OVER ARGENTINA U-23’S AND 1960 MUNICH SAW THEM REACH THE SEMI FINAL WHERE THEY WERE BEATEN BY ATLETICO PARANAENSE 1-0
@DaveOGrady1 Rovers, who at the time were the reigning league champions and FAI Cup holders, had the most representation on this first ever team, the rest of the side was made up of players from Shels, Fordsons, Drumcondra and Bohs. The newspaper reports of the time all agreed that the Ireland team were deservedly beaten with the Irish Independent reporting that “Italy surprised the Irishmen by their splendid combination which was perfect at times.” Even though Ireland’s shooting was “wretched” Rovers forward JJ Flood was “unlucky not to find the net” and one of the “few players to distinguish himself.” Mr R.F. Murphy of the FAIFS reported that “little was known of the form of the Italian players and news of their excellence will come as a surprise to many.” Indeed! The Indo were however sympathetic to the Irish team and said there had been mitigating circumstances behind the heavy defeat. “Some allowance has to be made for the disadvantage which the Free State players suffered as a result of travelling. They left Dublin on St. Patricks Day and arrived in Turin at 6pm on Saturday after a tedious journey.” The two teams would meet again the following year in Lansdowne Road and Bob Fullum became the first player to score for the country in a 2-1 defeat.
You have to hand it to @ShamrockRovers. They did the business in India! Wins over 1860 Munich’s reserves and the Argentina U23’s. #COYBIG

culture highlights ____________________________ Welcome to the March Culture section of InTallaght Magazine. There is plenty happening this month in Tallaght with RUA RED hosting 1916 commemorations, the Civic Theatre has plenty of music and drama and Seachtain na Gaeilge comes to Tallaght Library. Read on for more.
FIRST UP RUA RED: Seachtain na Gaeilge takes place from March 1st – 17th this year, and RUA RED will be running a number of FREE events over the duration. No excuse not to learn a cúpla focal! From talking circles, where you can ask a native speaker your language questions, tours of the current exhibition Carnage Visors completely as gaeilge, and self-led art activities in the Creative Den all week, there’s something for everyone. Since January, RUA RED has been working on an exciting 1916 commemoration project, with workshops taking place across the county in assorted primary and secondary schools, South Dublin libraries, Tallaght Hospital and Áras Chrónáin cultural centre. Workshops led by local writer Alan Nolan and artist Elaine Leader have encouraged participating members of the public to look back 100 years to South Dublin in 1916 and then imagine what the county will be like in 2116, creating a piece of art and accompanying story based on this. The resulting creative stories and illustrations will be showcased in the exhibition Then and In Time To Be opening in RUA RED on April 23rd at 3.30pm, as part of the 1916 commemorations. All welcome. For more details you can contact the RUA RED reception on 01 451 5860.

NEXT THE CIVIC THEATRE: This March the Civic Theatre is packed full of drama, comedy and music. On Monday February 29th – Saturday March 5th, Decadent Theatre return to the Civic with their critically acclaimed production of The Dead School. Two men, a generation apart, their histories make them both time bombs. As in The Butcher Boy and Breakfast on Pluto (both nominated for the Booker Prize), Pat McCabe demonstrates his ability to pinpoint the exact moment when ordinary minds take flight into madness. Equally compelling, equally heartbreaking in its impact, The Dead School has established McCabe as one of the most celebrated writers of literary fiction today. Schools Performances this month feature Theatre Lovett with They Called Her Vivaldi - an upbeat comedyadventure about a sensitive musicalprodigy making a quiet name for herself in a harsh world. A father and daughter live in a haberdasher’s shop, and when the daughter’s musical gift is revealed, their world takes on a whole new dimension. This show comes to the Civic Theatre on Tuesday March 8th at 9.45am and 11.30 am. From March 8th – 10th Livin Dred Theatre Company are on tour to the Civic with The Kings of The Kilburn High Road. Set in the mid-1970’s a group of young men left their homes in the West of Ireland, took the boat out of Dublin Bay and sailed across the sea to England in the hope of making their fortunes and returning home. Twentyfive years later only one, Jackie Flavin, makes it home, but does so in a coffin. Musical treats this month include Johnny McEvoy on March 15th, Sandy
Kelly as Patsy Cline on March 16th and The Legend of Luke Kelly on March 18th. Comedy trio Foil, Arms and Hog also come to the Civic on Thursday March 24th following sell-out runs at the Dublin and Edinburgh Fringe festivals. In their new show SkiddlyWup, they present their most critically acclaimed show to date, showcasing a delicious blend of bizarre, surreal and hilarious comedy scenes with outrageous characters and unexpected twists. We close this season with two classic pieces of Irish Drama The Cripple of Inishmaan by Martin McDonagh on March 25th and 26th and Flann is Yer Only Man on March 31st – April 2nd.
FINALLY, AT SOUTH DUBLIN LIBRARIES: South Dublin Library Services and South Dublin County Council in partnership with Áras Chrónáin are hosting Seachtain na Gaeilge Átha Cliath Theas (SnaGÁCT) events to highlight and celebrate our culture through music, dance, arts and of course our native language. The SnaGÁCT programme will run from March 1st – 17th and this year’s calendar of events includes a special concert by Kíla, classes for all levels, workshops, traditional music sessions, and many other entertaining events, most of which are free of charge. 2016 is a special year and to mark this there will be an additional category of events called An Teanga Bheo - The Living Language, which will commemorate the role of the Irish language and culture in the historical events of 1916.
