This edition will certainly be one for you Pokémon gamers out there as we take a look at some of the best places in Tallaght to catch those Pokémon.

NEW ‘WARMTH AND WELLBEING’ PILOT SCHEME LAUNCHED IN LOCAL COMMUNITIES BY RACHEL LYNCH
TALLAGHT COMMUNITY ARTS LAUNCH PEARSE EXHIBITION WITH SPECTACULAR OPEN AIR PERFORMANCE BY PADRAIG CONLON President Michael D Higgins and a host of invited guests were present last month for the official launch of a new exhibition on the life of Patrick Pearse at The Hermitage in Rathfarnham where he lived and ran his Irish-speaking school, Scoil Éanna from 1910-16. The school was highly innovative and as well as teaching Irish Pearse and his colleagues reenacted ancient stories, plays and texts as they sought to revive Ireland’s mythic past and heritage in order to pass it on to future generations. In keeping with the spirit of Scoil Éanna, Tallaght Community Arts provided the highlight of the event with an awe inspiring open
air performance in the walled garden of The Hermitage. Titled Aeridheacht-Taking The Air, from the title Pearse gave St Enda’s Annual Open Day, the idea behind the piece was to reimagine Open Day 1914 and the mythical pageant Fionn- A Dramatic Spectacle. The performance was very well received by all in attendance and was the culmination of a project that began in 2014 when Tallaght Community Arts proposed to use the 2016 Centenary of The Rising to explore the ground breaking educational experiment undertaken by Padraig Pearse at the school. As he launched the newly developed Patrick Pearse exhibition, President Higgins said the performance from Tallaght Community Arts gave hope for the future.

The Dublin South West TD is confirming that she will lead on

the development of the First Ever National LGBT Strategy for young people and wants the voices of local youth groups to be heard. The Minister says over the coming months she wants to hear from those groups in Tallaght who took a lead role in securing a Yes Vote for Marriage Equality.
People over 55 with asthma and Chronic Pulmonary Disease in Firhouse, Jobstown, Tallaght and other parts of the Dublin 24 post code should check if they can avail of a new scheme to make their home winter ready. Under the scheme home and energy improvements can be carried out on the home of those with Asthma or Pulmonary disease once a number of provisions are met, including that they are in receipt of fuel allowance and they have approval of a health care official. The pilot scheme is limited to carrying out energy efficiency improvements to approximately 400 homes in 2016. The government say that it intends to continue the pilot scheme in 2017 and 2018 and if the pilot is successful, consideration will be given to expanding it nationwide after that.
PLEASE NOTE DATE CHANGE FOR TALLAFEST 2016 BY GWEN COTTER Tallafest 2016 will now take place on Saturday September 10th rather than September 3rd as we printed last month.

NEWS DUBLIN LORD MAYOR CALLS ON PUBLIC TO CONTINUE SUPPORTING CHARITIES BY PADRAIG CONLON The public must not allow the fraud at suicide prevention charity Console to “tar all Irish charities with the one brush”, Dublin’s new lord mayor has warned. Labour councillor Brendan Carr, who was elected last month, said he would be “extremely concerned” if the “reputational scandals” affecting the high-profile charity led to donations being slashed for other transparent organisations. Responding to the latest controversies to emerge in Console, the lord mayor said many well-meaning charities would simply not survive without
the voluntary help of the public. “As first citizen of Dublin, I am calling on the goodwill of Irish people to continue to support the charity and voluntary sector, who for so long have done so much invaluable work acting as a linchpin for a multitude of deserving causes. “There are thousands of charities registered in Ireland, each involved in supplementing the work of the health sector, working in social justice advocacy, education, homelessness, disability, sport, culture, youth, overseas aid, the arts and environment. “The Irish charity and voluntary sector delivers crucial services that in other countries would be considered a core function of the state.

I’VE JUST RELEASED MY SECOND EBOOK CALLED HANS THE FLYING SAUSAGE AND IT’S JUST BEEN ACCEPTED ONTO MEET DANNY THE iSTORE BY PADRAIG CONLON @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG
“I’m originally from Latvia and I came to Ireland initially for work experience in 2003 which was supposed for a couple of years. 13 years later I’m still here! I like Ireland, the people are decent. I’ve always lived in Dublin and I’ve been working in Tallaght for ten years. I work as a security guard and I am also an animator. I got into animation almost by accident. Three years ago a friend of mine called Stephen, who is a video game developer, was making a game called The Knight Rider and he was looking for more characters for the game. I did a rough sketch for him which he liked and asked could he use it in the game. I had never studied animation before and even though I could draw there was so much to learn. I started studying from videos on YouTube and began thinking up stories. I would show my cartoons to my friends and they all laughed and said they were good which was nice! For my first ebook I did a version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. It’s basically the original story just redrawn in a different style. I’ve just released my second ebook called Hans The Flying Sausage and it’s just been accepted onto the iStore. Animation is something I want to

do in the future. Maybe one day it will be my full time job. At the moment I only know the basic stuff with regard to animation so I would love to go to college to learn more but I don’t really have the time as I have a wife and two small children and they come first. My kids are only two, and four months old so they’re too young at the moment to give me any feedback on my cartoons but I can’t wait until they are older so they can give me their opinions! I love drawing and when I come home after a late shift after midnight, and all my family is in bed, I find it very relaxing. I think it is so important to do something you love and if you get to do that as a job well you never really are working are you? I have so many ideas for stories and I hope I get the time to create them all. At the moment I am looking for an agent and every day I’m contacting publishers to see if they would be interested in selling my work so if anyone is reading this and think they would be interested in talking to me please get in touch!

GOTTA CATCH ‘EM ALL!! It’s here! Pokémon Go launches in the Ireland
BY RACHEL LYNCH @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL
You might have noticed Pokémon cropping up in conversations a lot more than usual lately. It’s all down to a new game, called Pokémon Go, that has begun to launch around the world over the last few weeks, completely and utterly capturing the imagination of fans of the TV show and card collection game. But what exactly is all the fuss about? I’m going to try to explain.
For me, the days of Pokémon seemed like a childhood memory. I was at an age when it was released when mornings on my Gameboy and collecting the cards was the be all and end all of my weekends. Last month Tweets and Facebook posts of images featuring Pokémon characters in different real life locations throughout the world began to fill my social media news feeds. At first I took very little notice but the images and articles kept coming and I became intrigued by the

POKÉMON GO
16 // #intallaght / TWEET US
number of posts about Pokémon that just kept appearing. So just what is this Pokémon Go? In simple terms, it is a game that uses your phone’s GPS and clock to detect where and when you are in the world and make Pokémon “appear” around you (on your phone screen) so you can go and catch them. As you move around, different types of Pokémon will appear depending on where you are and what time it is. The idea is to encourage you to travel around the real world to catch Pokémon in the game. This mix of a game and the real world interacting is known as “augmented reality.” Pokémon Go has taken this idea of hunting, finding and collecting Pokémon (like Ash in the TV show) to an entirely new level. The app uses a real world map and your location, enabling you to explore the real world in search of Pokémon, who are hiding everywhere. When you stumble upon one, they’ll appear on the map and a quick tap will enter you into the mini game to catch them. This is where augmented reality comes into play, as the Pokémon in question will then appear in front of you (via your smartphone camera) and you must use Poké Balls in order to catch it. Different Pokémon appear close to their natural habitat – for instance, water-type Pokémon stay close to rivers and oceans. Beyond the exploration and catching of Pokémon, players can also head to “Gyms” where, as a member of one of three teams they can battle for control of the Gym and improve the powers of the various creatures in their Pokédex. As well as these battle points, there are also PokéStops, usually tied to landmarks, monuments and other interesting places like The Square Shopping Centre, Tallaght Library and Civic Theatre for example. These are where you can stock up on Poké Balls and other helpful items. There are also “lures”. These
THE APP DELIBERATELY ENCOURAGES PEOPLE TO BE MORE ACTIVE are hotstops that players can set up at existing PokésStops that lure nearby Pokémon to them for a 30 minute period. Crowds of people have already been spotted in various locations around the world taking advantage of such moments.
The game was released first in the US, Australia and New Zealand with demand for the game so high it caused the servers of Niantic (the games developer) to crash causing further worldwide releases to be put on hold. A short while later the UK go their chance to download the game, leaving us in Ireland waiting a further two days before it was finally available in the app store. I downloaded the app as soon as it became available to the Irish market on July 16 with no clue as to the ins and outs of it all.
So, how strong has the reaction been? In a word: astonishing. In a single day in the US, Pokémon Go managed to overtake Tinder in terms of app usage. There are already anecdotes appearing on social media of players attempting to catch Pokémon “no matter what” – including one user who carried on playing after being pulled over by the police and another who was playing as his wife was in labour. In my opinion, the main appeal of the free-to-play Pokémon Go is being out in the real world, finding other people who also enjoy the experience which brings the sort of intangible dream of Pokémon
to life while adding some excitement and fun outside of the game itself. The app deliberately encourages people to be more active. I have noticed that I and some of my colleagues have been taking walks to the local park to visit PokéStops and hunt Pokémon on our lunch breaks. Other players are realising a similar trend—catching Pokémon can feel like a workout, or be a fun way to gamify exercise which is definitely a good thing in my opinion.

POKÉMON GO For thousands out there forced to choose on a daily basis whether to search for Pokémon or true love, a Pokémon Go version of Tinder may sound too good to be true. But the launch of a new PokéDates app means people can now go in search of colourful little monsters alongside a prospective future partner. I have also come across Facebook invites for Pokémon Go pub crawls which strangely does sound appealing! When Go was announced last September, it was already being heralded as a landmark experiment in virtual reality gaming. Could the creators ever have imagined it would reach the heights of the popularity today? I doubt it but I think that’s more to do with the age range it appeals to. Pokémon Go’s phenomenal early success has seen the game surpass Facebook and Twitter in popularity among mobile phone users in the US. A recent study by mobile app intelligence firm Sensor Tower revealed that the game was played for an average of 33 minutes in the US. By contrast, the Facebook app’s daily usage was 22 minutes ahead of Snapchat (18) and Twitter (17). I’m sure the target audience wasn’t just young children, but I would never have guessed that it would take over the life of so many in their late 20’s and up. We also can’t forget how these fans now in their late 20’s and older are all part of the generation that was around when Pokémon first came onto the scene. They say never underestimate the power of nostalgia. For the 90s-era-brands, in particular, this has served to generate enormous Poké-hype. So it’s no surprise that a movie would be in the works right? The movie studio Legendary Entertainment plans to launch the first live-action Pokémon movie franchise. Legendary is fresh from turning another game into a blockbuster with Warcraft
18 // #intallaght / TWEET US
and, the belief seems to be that a Pokémon film could enjoy similar success. Despite server issues and in-game bugs that have yet to be resolved, Pokémon Go has become a smash hit. Last month, Pokémon Go had earned an estimated 7.5 million downloads in the US alone, hauling in more than $1.6 million each day, and at two weeks, that number had grown to 21 million daily active users. On the instant success of Pokémon Go, Nintendo shares jumped more than 25 percent, and businesses and restaurants near PokéStops, where players can collect items and find Pokémon, have reported significant increases in foot traffic. To those who are yet to download the game or who have little or no interest in online trends it’s important to point out that this is not just another mobile game and it’s not just another Pokémon game. As a matter of fact, there has been nothing like this to ever enter the market. This is future of gaming and judging by the response online the demand is only getting bigger!
POKÉMON GO’S PHENOMENAL EARLY SUCCESS HAS SEEN THE GAME SURPASS FACEBOOK AND TWITTER IN POPULARITY AMONG MOBILE PHONE USERS

KATIE TAYLOR
CAN KATIE DO IT AGAIN? Katie Taylor has already lost twice this year. Is her star fading or can she turn it around and make history in Rio this month? BY PADRAIG CONLON @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG
It’s August 2012 and a 10,000 strong Irish crowd in London’s ExCeL arena are roaring Katie Taylor on as her Olympic final fight with Russian opponent Sofya Ochivaga enters the third round. In the opening rounds there is nothing between the two fighters. For nearly 10 years the 26 year old Bray native has trained at her dad’s gym twice a day, for two hours, six days a week to get to this moment. The whole country is watching, eager to finally see an Irish gold medal winner 20 years on from Michael Carruth’s historic win in Barcelona. The third round is a whopper for Katie as she produces a remarkable performance which edges her two points ahead going into the fourth and final round. She does enough to seal the deal 10-8 to win the women’s lightweight final and after two decades of heartache Ireland finally has a gold medal winner. Legendary US magazine Sports Illustrated reports that Taylor is one of the most popular athletes at the London Games: “Looking for the most popular athlete at the Olympics, any list
20 // #intallaght / TWEET US
INSTEAD OF GOING TO RIO AS INVINCIBLE, SHE APPEARS WOUNDED AND VULNERAB LE, BUT EVERYONE KNOWS APPEARANCES CAN BE DECEPTIVE has to include Taylor,” the article says. “Katie Taylor might be the most popular athlete in any sport at the London Olympics. USA boxing coach Basher Abdullah goes even further and thinks she could be the greatest ever: “She’s a true champion,” he says. “When you look back at the great ones in boxing, it’s the Alis, they wanted to compete against the best, and that’s the same mentality as Katie Taylor has. “She’s going to go down as
one of the best boxers in history. Not just female boxers, the best boxers. She can do it all.” Four years on and Katie will make the trip to Rio to defend her title this month maybe not in quite the same place she was in before heading off to London. When she lost to Yana Alekseevna in the semi-finals of the European Olympic Qualifiers in April she said she would “come again” and nobody doubted her. It was her first defeat since 2011 and since then her record read 62-0, with 18 winners medals thrown in for good measure. Suddenly questions were being asked. Prior to her defeat she was nailed on to win gold in Rio. Now there was a chance she wasn’t even going to be there. Last November her father Pete announced he wouldn’t be in her corner. “I’m taking a break,” he said at the time. “After years it can be stressful watching your daughter fight. But I’ll be there in the crowd in the front. We are trying new things at the moment so we’ll see how it goes this time.” How much the departure of coach Billy Walsh to Team USA also affected Taylor
remains to be seen. Suddenly the air of invincibility that surrounded her had disappeared and she appeared vulnerable going into the World Championships in Kazakhstan in May as she entered the last chance saloon for Olympic qualification. She booked her place on the flight to Rio as Ireland’s only female boxer by winning her quarter-final against Mexico’s Victoria Torres but another set back was looming. She stepped into the ring with France’s Estelle Mosley in the semi-finals hoping to keep alive her dream of winning 6 world boxing championships in a row. She didn’t look at her best over the four rounds and suffered a split decision loss, getting the nod from all judges in a close first round, Taylor lost the second on two of the judges’ cards, won the third before the cruel forth round decision. Now she had lost two fights in the space of a month, something that had never happened to her in a decade of competing. Instead of going to Rio as invincible, she appears wounded

KATIE TAYLOR
FOR SOME PEOPLE NOT WINNING GOLD IS A DISASTER BUT SHE COULD BE A DOUBLE OLYMPIC MEDALLIST and vulnerable but everyone knows appearances can be deceptive. At 30 years of age she is in the prime years of her boxing life, inspite of having a few miles on the clock, and you can bet your life none of her rivals for that Lightweight gold medal will be writing her off just yet. Her old coach Billy Walsh thinks that not being the favourite this time round could really work in her favour. “For some people not winning gold is a disaster but she could be a double Olympic medallist,” he said. “Since London female boxing has gone through the roof. Katie is in a 60kg division, probably the best division, where the most talent is. “There are probably eight of them of real good quality than can pip each other at any given time. I said to her after losing that Olympic qualifier in Turkey, there’s no harm in losing that invincibility tag. “She lost a contest. I saw her having really bad days in sparring where she would have lost. Know what I mean? She’d come back the next day and she’d rectified what was happening, what was going wrong. “There’s no panic, absolutely no panic at this stage. When I see her I will say that it could be a blessing, going to the games as Olympic gold medallist. No pressure and maybe returning as Olympic gold medallist. Why can’t she do it? There’s only 12 of
22 // #intallaght / TWEET US
them there . . . If she’s top seed... we don’t know, she could get a bye and its three fights.” Speaking last month at the launch of the Irish Olympic team’s uniform she spoke of the pressures she has experienced so far this year. “It’s been a very challenging few months, for sure,” she said. “A very disappointing few months. But, at the same time, a lot of positives have come out of those few months as well. Thank God, I have Rio to look forward to and hopefully rectify things.” Taylor feels that to win the gold medal for a second time would be her greatest achievement after winning six European Championship gold medals and five World Championship golds as well as a world bronze. “With the challenges of this year, to stand on top of the podium would be an unbelievable feeling,” she said. “It’s going to be such an emotional feeling as well, I’m sure. I feel that the losses will do me good, really. I never think about losing. That’s why it’s so hard to accept a loss. “I do a good job of staying positive and just moving on. It’s not as if I was getting out boxed in that fight. Nothing I’m going to say is going to change the
decision but I feel I performed very well during the competition. “From the very first fight to the last one, my performances were very good and strong. “But, at the same time, I’m going to the Olympic Games with the same mind-set as every other competition, with the hope of coming home with a gold medal.” When the boxing in Rio starts she will be ranked number one in the world 60kg division, 840 points ahead of nearest rival, China’s Junhua Yin and 850 points ahead of Estelle Mossely . She has proved she is a warrior before and all true warriors are more dangerous when they feel threatened. This is her one and only chance to grasp immortality and do something no Irish sportsperson has ever done before by winning back to back Olympic golds. Katie Taylor has nothing left to prove, she has won everything her sport has to offer, yet nobody will be pushing her more than she will be pushing herself. Does the story of her life have another glorious golden chapter about to be written?

INGLOT Anyone out there that has any interest in makeup will agree that Inglot is one of the best around. The new Inglot store looks modern and classy and judging by the comments we have received on social media we are delighted to see so many of you excited about our new arrival. From beautiful eye shadows to the perfect match foundation they literally have it all. We spoke with MUA Amy McMahon who told us just how happy they are to be here in The Square “We are delighted with the response. We were completely booked up with festival make up for the likes of Beyonce, Kodaline and Longitude. Now coming in September it will be debs and then October will be Halloween but at the minute it is mostly festival looks, it’s also wedding season this time of the year”. We asked Amy what sort of preparation should be done ahead of planning for that perfect make up look for your debs “We always recommend for someone to bring in a picture of a celebrity look they like or if they like an Inglot signature look from Instagram. Our social media would be the main background for us. A lot of people put up make up looks on the Instagram and others would
bring that picture in and we would recreate the look”. Another tip Amy has is to make sure you book as early as possible “as soon as you know a date let us know and book it because with weekends we can be booked up three or four weeks in advance.” The team here at Inglot are always on hand to help with all your make up queries from the shade of foundation to that perfect lip they will have expert advice on what look suits you best. SUICIDE SQUAD BY RACHEL LYNCH @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL
Earlier this year Warner Bros released their first DC Comics film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the titular characters of which everyone has heard. Now this month movie-goers will be treated to a different kind of comic book film - Suicide Squad which will follow a group of supervillains who are coerced into going on dangerous missions. The star line up for this film has been spoken about for well over a year and sees names like Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Jared Leto and Joel Kinnaman take on leading roles. The plot, which has been under speculation from the moment the film was announced, is still to be revealed but it’s
expected it will follow the basic premise from the comic books. The Suicide Squad for those of you who don’t know too much about the comics is a secret team of supervillains who have been imprisoned by the United States government. The team undertakes highrisk missions for the government in exchange for amnesty. If they succeed in their mission, they live to fight another day, and get their sentences reduced. But if they fail, they can just be written off, hence the nickname. It’s being reported already that Suicide Squad will be one of the of the biggest films of 2016, only time will tell if it lives up to that hype but I for one am excited to see what director David Ayer has done with the iconic comic book story.

STAR TREK BEYOND BY RACHEL LYNCH @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL
Star Trek Beyond catches up with Enterprise captain James Kirk who is questioning his choice of career three years into the ship’s five-year mission. The cast we have all come to know over the last few years are all back for the 2016 instalment. So what about the plot this time round? Captain Kirk and his crew encounter a surprise attack in outer space which forces the Enterprise to crash-land on a mysterious world. The attack came from Krall, a lizard-like dictator who derives his energy by sucking the life
40 // #intallaght / TWEET US
out of his victims. Krall needs an ancient and valuable artifact that’s aboard the badly damaged starship. Left stranded in a rugged wilderness, Kirk, Spock and the rest of the crew must now battle a deadly alien race while trying to find a way off their hostile planet. We have only had the trailers and added sneak peek online videos to judge this movie but from what I’ve seen it looks as good as the previous. This new movie looks set to focus on the relationship of the Enterprise’s crew which is the real source of
drama and unlike what we have seen before. Instead of the focus being on just one or two of the characters, everyone is included. I’m really looking forward to this one and if reviews from the US are anything to go by this could be one of the greatest yet! release date: OUT NOW

BAD MOMS
NINE LIVES
BY RACHEL LYNCH
BY RACHEL LYNCH
@INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL
@INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL
This month’s upcoming comedy is one with yet another host of well known actresses with Mila Kunis, Christina Applegate, Kristen Bell and Jada Pinkett Smith coming together to take on the toughest job there is – motherhood. Amy (Mila Kunis) is the perfect mother, and to the outside world she has it all. The picture perfect marriage, a beautiful home, a career many would love and over achieving children. Although all seems great she’s exhausted and at breaking point. Fed up with the day to day schedule she joins forces with two other over-stressed moms on a quest to liberate themselves from conventional responsibilities – going on a wild night out. The two minute trailer is enough for me to want to see this film when it hits cinemas. The trio who take on some unmotherlylike freedom, fun and self indulgence will bring a smile to everyone’s face this summer.

Well if that’s a yes then you are going to love this feel good film which stars Kevin Spacey and Jennifer Garner. Tom (Kevin Spacey) is a major business tycoon who has become distant from his daughter and wife. Living a rather sad life that only involves work he finds himself stuck last minute for a present for his daughter’s 11th birthday. In an effort to win back her affections he goes to a mysterious pet shop and buys a cat. On the way home however, Tom gets in an accident and finds himself trapped inside the cat’s body. The pet store owner Felix tells Tom he must reconcile with his family within one week or stay as a cat forever. Can Tom make it up to those closest to him in time?

IRISH FILM BOARD CALLS TO BRING BACK €20M FUNDING BY RACHEL LYNCH We have had so many success stories over the last few year in particular with Irish films. Now the Irish Film Board/Bord Scannán na hÉireann have launched a new five year plan that includes a call for the immediate restoration of €20 million in state funding to help with films for the future. The five year plan entitled Building on Success details the Board’s ambitious vision and plans for its role in the currently thriving Irish film, television and animation industry. It says that increased funding is vital to its
plans and says the restoration of state finance in particular will ensure that “the talent and opportunities that exist within the sector can be fully nurtured and supported”. Earlier this year, Irish films and talent picked up a record nine Oscar nominations with an unprecedented two Irish movies in the running for the Best Film Award. According to the IFB recent global hits such as Room, Brooklyn, Sing Street, Love & Friendship, Song of the Sea and The Lobster, have taken $140 million at the worldwide box office with audience figures estimated in the region of 18 million.

POKÉMON GO’S SUCCESS HAS MOVIE STUDIOS SCRAMBLING TO SECURE THE RIGHTS FOR A LIVE-ACTION FILM BY EDWARD LAM The huge success of Pokémon Go has seen Nintendo’s value rise to levels not seen since the 1980s – but it looks like there could be more good news on the way. Deadline reports that Legendary Pictures is leading the rest of Hollywood’s studios in the pursuit of a live-action Pokémon film. A deal has been on the cards for a long time between Hollywood and the classic 90s Japanese franchise, but the new game’s performance
FUTURE SONIC THE HEDGEHOG GAMES COULD FEATURE CRASH BANDICOOT, ADVENTURE TIME AND EVEN DRAGON BALL Z BY EDWARD LAM An email survey sent out by Sega is getting fans of Sonic the Hedgehog and the ’90s in general very excited. The survey asked for general feedback on recent Sonic games, before going on to ask for opinions on Sonic the Hedgehog crossovers. We’ve already seen Sonic feature with the likes of Nintendo’s Mario and now Sega are wondering who else Sonic fans would like to see the famous hedgehog partnered with. Names mentioned included companies like Nintendo, Capcom
since release has made it all the more likely. Legendary is fresh from turning another game into a blockbuster with Warcraft and, while nothing is confirmed yet, the belief seems to be that a Pokémon film could enjoy similar success. Pokémon, since launching as a card trading game and animated TV series, has had plenty of films, but no live-action movies as of yet. Let’s just hope we don’t end up with another Dragonball Evolution.
and Disney, as well as Dragon Ball Z and Adventure Time. We’re not entirely sure how a Super Sonic x Super Saiyan crossover would work, but it sounds like something we’d like to see. Other characters mentioned specifically were Crash Bandicoot and Rachet & Clank, as well as Pikachu – all very exciting stuff. The survey doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll get a Sonic crossover with any of these characters, though, especially considering My Little Pony was an option on the survey, and one that might get a lot of votes. But it is the 25th year of Sonic’s existence, and Sega will likely have big plans to celebrate. Let’s hope they’re good ones.

MUSIC
ALTHOUGH THIS ALBUM DOESN’T REACH THE HEIGHTS OF HIS PREVIOUS TWO OUTINGS THE ALBUM IS STILL VERY GOOD AND WORTH A LISTEN JAKE BUGG ON MY ONE BY COLM O’MUIRÍ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM
On My One is the third studio album from English indie rock singer-songwriter Jake Bugg and although this album doesn’t reach the heights of his previous two outings the album is still very good and worth a listen. The drop in quality could be due to the fact that Bugg produced the album himself this time round, and only received help on three tracks on the album from Irish Producer Jacknife Lee. The album was released in June and following its release it has received generally favourable reviews, which is a trend that will continue throughout this review of the album. On My One is a stellar opening track on the album, starting off slow and showing off Bugg’s unique voice alongside the strumming of his acoustic guitar. Gimme The Love picks up the tempo of the album with a heavy bass line which features throughout the song.
46 // #intallaght / TWEET US
The next few songs are quintessential Jake Bugg songs but the stand out track from the group is the stellar The Love We’re Hoping For which is darker in theme but is a brilliant song and shows the potential that this 22-year-old lad has, and hopefully lives up to. Ain’t No Rhyme is definitely the worst song on the album, but for an eleven song album to only have one song on it that will be skipped over isn’t bad going. The song is a mess with Bugg rapping his way through the song, hopefully no more songs like this appear on future albums. The backing music on the track is very good it is just the vocals that are perplexing because it’s not like any of his other music. This song is followed by Livin’ Up Country which is a great easy listening song that is perfect to be played in the sunshine. The song features a lot of country music styles throughout the song which suits Bugg’s voice to a tee, even if you wouldn’t expect it to. All That is another great track which only features Bugg and his guitar and the album should end there but unfortunately it continues on for one more track. Hold On You is the last song on the album and unfortunately it doesn’t end on a high as it is a poor track.
There is not much wrong with the album although the fact that it clocks in at only a little over half an hour at 33:25 is one of them, that for me is very short for a full studio album, especially when it isn’t reflected in the price of the CD. On My One is a great third album and considering Jake Bugg is only 22, here is hoping that he learns from the very few mistakes he made on this record and rectifies it on future releases. For anyone who would like to catch Jake Bugg he has one upcoming show in the Olympia Theatre on November 5th, and I have heard he puts on a fantastic live performance.

FERGIE M.I.L.F. $ BY COLM O’MUIRÍ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM
M.I.L.F. $, which is pronounced Milf Money is the lead single from Fergie’s upcoming second studio album Double Dutchess. We all know what M.I.L.F stands for however Fergie said that her version of it stands for Mom’s I’d Like to Follow and that the song and video is about empowering moms and having fun. Fergie definitely has a powerful voice but this song is terrible from start to finish and Fergie only once gives us a glimpse of her potential during the song. M.I.L.F. $ is a far cry from some of her better songs like Big Girls Don’t Cry which was a worldwide hit for her. Perhaps Fergie should change the acronym in the song to Music I Would Rather Forget because this is a terrible song and the music video is not much better. The video which has a 50’s feel and style features Fergie with a group of famous mothers including the likes of Chrissy Teigen, Ciara, Alessandra Ambrosio, Devon Aoki and Kim Kardashian West. At the time of writing there is no release date for Fergie’s second album, Double Dutchess, but if the rest of the album is like this song let’s hope it is never released. M.I.L.F. $ comes across as a desperate attempt for Fergie to try and grab some media attention as her first and only album to date was released in 2006. Hopefully her follow up single will be better than M.I.L.F. $ as this is a song that will only be remembered for its over the top video.

KELLY’S TOP 3 BEAUTY ESSENTIALS Here are my top three beauty products this month. Make sure you check out my new blog to see more of my beauty must-haves and reviews of products that are trending online! kellyevansbeauty.blogspot.ie BY KELLY EVANS @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTKELLY
1. COLLECTION FAST STROKE LIQUID LINER My favourite eyeliner just has to be Fast Stroke by Collection. I have been using this product for over two years now and I swear I haven’t even thought of buying another liquid eyeliner. It is definitely my all time favourite. Fast Stroke isn’t hard at all on my eyelids and it applies sharply. It is jet black and dries very quickly. I have never had to top it up during the day and although the bottle is quite small, it does last a surprisingly long time, around 3-4 months. The products price ranges from €2 - €4 and is available in some chemists and makeup stores such as Boots, Superdrug etc. The long handle is a blessing as it gives you enough distance from the eye and helps you see the part of the eyelid you are applying to. How else would I get my winged eyeliner on fleek?

2. REAL TECHNIQUE MAKEUP BRUSHES
3. V ASELINE ‘SPRAY & GO’ COCOA RADIANT SPRAY MOISTURIZER
My favourite makeup brushes at the moment would have to be the RT brushes! I have almost every brush in their makeup brush collection. These award-winning brushes are my go-to and are just so perfect for those starting out or those who are more advanced. Their soft, fluffy bristles are not hard on your face and apply makeup very well and all RT brushes are cruelty-free! The sets come with a practical stand to hold your brushes. They come in sets (base, eyes, starter, bold metal etc.) and are all colour co-ordinated and labelled which is fantastic for someone like me who isn’t an expert on makeup. The brushes are very easy to clean and dry pretty quickly. I was worried with them being cheaper than ‘professional’ makeup brushes that the bristles would fall apart when washed but they didn’t and when they dried they were still as soft as when I bought them! For such good quality they are very affordable and available in selected chemists and beauty stores such as Boots, Hickey’s Pharmacy, Superdrug etc.
If you have dry skin this moisturizer is for you. Vaseline Spray & Go is the only moisturizer that I have found that works on my dry skin. I have tried so many different products for dry skin and I was never really satisfied. I use this product immediately after each shower and it leaves my skin feeling soft and thankfully non-greasy. I find most moisturizers I have used in the past have made my skin feel sticky and I was sick and tired of standing around waiting for it to dry. With Vaseline Spray & Go, the name says it all. I apply the product onto my skin after showering and it drys within seconds. An added bonus is definitely the delightful cocoa butter smell that lasts all day. So for those who suffer from dry skin or simply just want all-day moisture this product is for you. It comes in three different bottles Total Moisture, Aloe Vera and Cocoa Radiant.

SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON BY COLM O’MUIRÍ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM
San Diego Comic-Con or SDCC took place between Thursday July 21st and Sunday July 24th and it delivered some fantastic first looks. The first trailer from the upcoming Justice League film was released and although there was some disappointment with Batman Vs Superman, the reaction from the first trailer is that Justice League has rectified what was wrong with BvS. Cyborg, Aquaman, and the Flash are all shown in the trailer for the first time. Although in the trailer there was no footage of Superman or reference towards him, DC did release an image of all six for the first time. It was also confirmed that the tone of the upcoming Aquaman film would be one of a scary tonality. Following the Justice League theme, Wonder Woman also got its first trailer released. Although she was in BvS we had no origin
50 // #intallaght / TWEET US
story for this character and this movie will fill those in who aren’t familiar with Wonder Woman. The film is set during World War Two and like the Justice League trailer it looks spectacular. Fans of Netflix’s stellar Daredevil series will be pleased to know that a third season was confirmed. Daredevil is that bit different from other DC and Marvel movies and television series because it is made for a mature audience. Following the confirmation of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, during Comic-Con there were some major announcements revealed. Action hero royalty Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell are joining the series with Russell confirmed to be playing Ego and his costume was also on show. There is more mystery surrounding Sly Stallone’s role although this news definitely ads to the anticipation for the sequel
to what is regularly referred to as the best superhero movie. King Arthur: Legend of the Sword from Guy Ritchie got its first trailer. King Arthur stars the stellar Charlie Hunnam of Sons of Anarchy fame, it also has a very good supporting cast of Eric Bana, Jude Law and Djimon Hounsou. The film is also set to have a cameo from David Beckham which is worth a look at the film just for that. San Diego Comic-Con 2016 had so much more at it, like the announcement of the Blair Witch sequel, an extended look at Doctor Strange starring Benedict Cumberbatch and a Kong: Skull Island trailer starring Tom Hiddlestone. All in all it confirmed that the year ahead will be a great one for comic book fans with some great films and television series coming our way. For more info on all these films keep checking InTallaght Magazine.

GAME
MADDEN NFL 17 BY COLM O’MUIRÍ @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTCOLM
Madden NFL 17 is an American Football game that is being published and developed by EA Sports. The cover athlete for this year’s game is New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski (above). Madden is the first sports franchise game to be released this year and it always lays down a marker for other sports games, especially when it comes to the game presentation and graphics. EA have improved the presentation of Madden 17 with improvements to the camera and sounds of the game. The new camera angles add to the immersive experience of the game throughout your career mode all the way from the practice fields to the Super Bowl. The in-game sounds have also been re-recorded and redesigned at Pinewood Studios to make it feel as real as possible for the gamer. EA has also added new authentic cameras and replays like Pylon Cam and Time Scale Replays to show your biggest
52 // #intallaght / TWEET US
and best moments from even more angles. The improved, or augmented UI and the addition of being able to skip through presentation segments, getting you to the action quicker are improvements which fans will enjoy. Madden NFL 17 will also be the first game in which Brandon Gaudin and Charles Davis will be calling all of the in game action. Special teams make a welcome comeback to the Madden franchise. There is also a return of a great game mode called Draft Champions which is a great feature of the game which will be a favourite of gamers who enjoy Fantasy Football. First off you draft your team, and build it like an NFL General Manager before taking over control of the team for all of the fast-paced action you come to expect from a Madden game to try and bring your team Super Bowl glory. Field goals have always been a given in Madden games however EA have now introduced the ability to ice the kicker to make one of the most important aspects of the NFL that bit more challenging in the game. This new risk or reward style of play along with trick plays and blocked plays add to the tension of one of sport’s greatest video game franchises.

Formula One 2016 or F1 2016 is a racing simulation video game published and developed by Codemasters, which is based on the 2016 season of the FIA 2016 Formula One Season. The first trailer for the game was released on June 16th and it looked amazing, this was a view that was backed up on July 7th when the second trailer for the game was released. It does however have to be noted that a game with fantastic graphics on the track lets itself down on the drivers out of the car when compared with other sports games, although if the game lives up to the hype this is one hiccup which can be let go. During the 2016 season there was a driver swap between two teams when Daniil Kyvat and Max Verstappen swapped cars with Kyvat moving from Red Bull to Toro Rosso and Verstappen
going in the opposite direction. Codemasters have confirmed that this will be the case in the game along with featuring all eleven cars and twenty-two drivers that are taking part in the season. All of the tracks from this year’s championship are also in the game including favourites like Silverstone, Monte Carlo, Spa and introducing a new addition to this year’s game and championship, the challenging street circuit of Baku, Azerbaijan. F1 2016 is said to be the most life-like recreation of the sport with more enhancements than before such as the safety car, the virtual safety car, manual starts and the game will also include formation starts in season and single races. The career mode will span up to ten F1 seasons in which you choose an avatar to represent you in the game. You then choose your team, each team has different goals and expectations from you and over the course of your career you can choose to move and earn a seat at your favourite team. Or build your team from the back of the grid to world champions.
F1 games over the past few years have been extremely fun but also very hard and this latest instalment looks to follow that trend. Codemasters seem to have put together a Formula One game to get excited about which fans will be pleased to know. The game will be available on PS4, Xbox One and PC from August 19th and will cost you €64.99 from Smyths and €79.99 from Gamestop.

MOTOR
I WAS IMPRESSED BY JUST HOW SLEEK AND STYLISH THIS NEW MODEL IS
RENAULT MEGANE GT BY RACHEL LYNCH @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL
This week we travelled to Renault Belgard to test drive the all new Renault Megane GT Line Nav. The fourth-generation Renault Megane enters the market with a GT version topping its range, and it’s the fastest, most exciting model too. So just where do I start with this one? On first glance I was impressed by just how sleek and stylish this new model is. The design team have really pulled out all the stops. The front grille is as distinctive as the LED lighting, both of which add to the sporty new image this Megane has now taken on. As I took a seat inside I was thrilled to see the interior had not been neglected which is something that can so frequently happen with models. One of the most interesting points for me on this model is how simple their media system was to understand along with the dash and dials. The refined chrome trim in the passenger compartment is refreshing not to mention the
54 // #intallaght / TWEET US
comfort of the nappa leather steering wheel. Then there is the high level of quality seating which have the look of luxurious bucket seats. So finally what about the drive? Well personally for me one of my favorite elements to the entire drive was the digital speed dial which is excellent for when you take this car onto the main roads. You can calculate your exact speed. It’s a smooth effortless drive, don’t be fooled by the size of this model. Once I left the showroom and got onto the bigger roads I was amazed at how quick it gathered speed with ease. So just how much will the new Renault Megane set you back this summer? There are five options available to you depending on what best suits your needs. From the Expression to the GT Nav. This particular model has a starting price of just €25,990 (excluding delivery and metallic paint) which is rather fantastic considering the high class car you will leave the showroom with. If you would like a test drive drop into the team from Renault Belgard today or call them on (01) 404 9999.

“I HAVE AN IDEA FOR A BOOK…” Local author Carolann Copland continues to share her insights on writing in the run up to the Carousel Aware Indie Book Awards in October. One letter at a time will make a word. Put some words together and you might have a sentence. A few sentences, one after the other and look at that… you’ve written a paragraph. Ten paragraphs later and you have a chapter or a scene. Repeat forty times and you have a book. It’s as simple as that. Okay, so it’s a little more complicated, but if I had a euro for every time someone said to me that they had an idea for a book, if only they had the time, I’d be rich. But January 2017 is only around the corner and maybe some of you feel you might like to throw your hat into The CAP Awards for next year? writingcap.ie Writing is an essential skill for everyone. What did you write today? Everyone will come up with something. We write every day with pen or keyboard. If writing is something you’d like to do, stop and think; what’s stopping you? Ask yourself a few questions. Why might you write?
Who are you writing for? What do you want to write? Where can you write? When are you going to write? How will you keep writing? Is it the fear of making mistakes? Over the last few months I wrote about FREE writing in InTallaght. Write ugly, then look for the gem amongst the rubble and rescue it. Write every day but don’t make it a solitary process. Ask at the library about a local writing group. Do you need a title or a theme to get you started? George Orwell said, “When I sit down to write a book, I do not say to myself, ‘I am going to produce a work of art.’ I write it because there is some lie that I want to expose, some fact to which I want to draw attention.” When I began to write I found myself writing about why good people do bad things and that’s a theme that has stuck with me through my first three novels. Something else to ask yourself is ‘Am I reading enough?’ Words
inside you can’t come out if you haven’t fed them in to begin with. Then you need to think about editing. Read it out loud to yourself. What sounds clunky? Have you put in some beautiful words that sound lovely but have nothing to do with what you’re writing? Have you rambled? If you’re bored reading a part that sounds like it’s going nowhere, what will your reader think? Are there spelling or grammar mistakes? Make time for writing. If you need to spend time looking after others, if you have a full time job, if you have another hobby such as sport… instead of letting these stop you writing, let them feed your writing. Use your experiences to give you writing fodder. This year’s entries are with the judges as we speak while they whittle them down to a short list for September. That could be you this time next year. If you want to write... Find the time.

IT’S HERE! POKÉMON GO LAUNCHES IN THE IRELAND BY EDWARD LAM Pokémon Go, the augmented reality game that has broken download records, has launched in the Ireland. The app, which was first launched in Australia and New Zealand before overtaking Tinder in the US in popularity, has now appeared on the iOS App Store and Google Play. Despite the game not being available in Ireland until now, thousands of players in Ireland have already downloaded the app by changing their region settings or using unofficial app stores, a move which led to warnings of malware from security experts. Developer Niantic had said the game’s release in Ireland would be delayed until they were “comfortable” their servers could handle demand. Statistics released in the US claimed Pokémon Go had already surpassed the number of daily users of Candy Crush Saga, the hugely popular puzzle game from UK developer King. The app, which is free to download, has already raised some concerns over claims it could access a user’s entire Google account, including email and passwords. Niantic quickly responded, claiming the move was unintentional, reassuring users that it was not collecting any exceptional data. Other safety concerns have also been raised after at least one attempted armed robbery was reported in the US and a woman discovered a dead body while searching for Pokémon with the app. Police in Darwin, Australia, also issued a message to users on Facebook, asking them to refrain from entering the city’s police station, which had been marked as a PokéStop in the game.

TALLAGHT MEANS BUSINESS – ONLINE! BY RACHEL LYNCH A €2,500 grant can help grow your business through the Trading Online Voucher Scheme. Tallaght firms wishing to join the revolution in online shopping and trading can avail of a new grant being offered by the Government, according to Dublin South West TD and Minister for Children, Dr Katherine Zappone. The Independent Minister says the grants are being provided to allow local businesses to take a slice of the €850,000 shoppers spend every hour online, 24 hours a day, every day. The funding is being made available after
research showed that one in four small businesses are missing out on the opportunity to expand and create new jobs. Minister Zappone added: “Tallaght is already established as one of the top shopping locations in the country, however as shoppers move increasingly online we must ensure that our small traders, which form the backbone of the local economy, are not left behind.” If you own a small business, with 10 or fewer employees and less than €2m in revenue, with little or no capacity to trade online, call your Local Enterprise Office, LEO Dublin South on 01 414 9000.

SPORTS NEWS CONOR MCGREGOR GETS HIS KIT OFF FOR FRONT COVER OF ESPN BY PADRAIG CONLON Just when you thought you had seen it all from Conor McGregor he decides it is time to strip down and literally bare all. Images appeared online last month which shows the UFC star naked for the ESPN magazine body issue this July. On the set of the photo shoot the Journal reported that the bodyweight champion joked “If I’m doing the naked body shoot, I had to do a few push ups
today.” The Dubliner described himself as a kid who ‘went all the way’. “Them Irish genes are good, they have served me well, we are made tough, we are made of steel”. The magazine was released on July 8th.
CALLS FOR DUBLINER WHO SAVED FC BARCELONA TO BE HONOURED BY HIS HOME CITY BY PADRAIG CONLON Fine Gael Councillor for the Ballymun Ward, Norma Sammon called on Dublin City Council to honour former FC Barcelona manager and Drumcondra resident, Patrick O’Connell in the lead up to the friendly match between the Spanish giants and Celtic in the Aviva Stadium on Saturday, July 30th. O’Connell grew up in Dublin and played junior football before gaining his first professional contract with Belfast Celtic in 1909. He would go on to play for and captain Manchester United and Ireland before moving to Spain in 1922 and becoming a manager who saved Barcelona from extinction and led Real Betis to their only La Liga title. O’Connell moved to the Catalan capital just as Spain was moving towards civil war. With the political and economic situation worsening, Barcelona were struggling to stay in business. The situation reached a crisis point as fullscale war erupted in July 1936. The league was suspended but Barcelona played on in a regional division and became a symbol of defiance against Franco for the Catalan people. In August

1936, the Barcelona president and prominent Catalan activist, Josep Sunyol, the man who had given O’Connell the managers job, was arrested by pro-Franco forces and killed. As the war raged on Barcelona teetered on the brink of bankruptcy. A lifeline came in 1937 when a Catalan businessman who had emigrated to Mexico, Manuel Mas Soriano, asked the club to tour his new home country, where the socialist government was hostile to Franco. O’Connell rounded up his players and staff and sailed to Mexico, where they played six matches before carrying on to New York for four more exhibition games. The tour cost the team most of their players, as only four returned with O’Connell back to Barcelona, with the rest either seeking asylum in Mexico or jumping out in France on the way home. But the money made from the tour saved Barcelona from going bust and O’Connell went back to Ireland shortly afterwards having Barcelona’s secured future and his own enduring legacy with the club.

RONALDO AND MESSI LEADING CONTENDERS FOR UEFA AWARD BY RACHEL LYNCH Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi will go head to head once again after being nominated on the 10-man shortlist for Uefa’s Best Player in Europe Award for 2015-16. Gareth Bale, Luis Suarez and Antoine Griezmann also made the top 10. The nominations are voted for by journalists from each of UEFA’s 55 member associations.

The shortlist will be cut to a final three on 5 August with the winner announced on 25 August, the day of the draw for the Champions League group stage.
As we all know the FIFA world rankings aren’t the most credible of sources. That said the new listings have seen Ireland move up the list by two spots. Martin O’Neill’s men drew with Sweden and lost to Belgium – ranked second best team in the world behind Argentina – before beating Italy to secure a place in the last 16. Ireland exited the competition at the last-16 stage when they were beaten by hosts France despite taking an early lead through a penalty from Robbie Brady. Wales’ run to the semi-finals sees them climb to 11th, above England who drop down to 13th following an early exit at the hands of outsiders Iceland. Portugal, who beat hosts France in the final, move up two places to sixth. Les Bleus climb 10 places to seventh, now above Spain, after returning to competitive internationals. Brazil are down two in ninth place, while Italy complete the top 10, having moved from 12th. Despite losing the Copa America Centenario final to Chile, Argentina remain top of the rankings with the leading five spots unchanged. 1. Argentina, 2. Belgium, 3. Colombia, 4.Germany, 5. Chile, 6. Portugal, 7. France, 8. Spain, 9. Brazil, 10. Italy

INROVERS
The day before the excellent 3-1 win in the derby Rovers announced the signing of professional terms with four of the U19 team; Sean Boyd, Shane Hanney, James Doona and Aaron Dobbs. Sean and Aaron went on to really announce their arrival the next day with both lads making excellent contributions in The
Hoops memorable victory with Sean bagging his first senior goal and celebrating in style in front of the away support! Aaron lead the line really well in what was his first start and showed a maturity well beyond his years when helping to set up The Hoops equaliser. Shamrock Rovers have always had a culture of producing young players down the years and with the signings of the four lads it is great to see that tradition still carrying on.
JAMES DOONA (18) MIDFIELDER
SHANE HANNEY (18) MIDFIELDER
James joined Shamrock Rovers in the summer of 2015 from St. Pat’s. An Ireland Under 16 and Under 17 international, he stood out in the middle of the park as an intelligent playmaker who had an ability to bring other players into the game. He made his first team debut last year in the Leinster Senior Cup quarter final away to Longford Town. Last year, as a Shamrock Rovers’ player, he was capped twice by the Republic of Ireland at Under 17 level. He was called up this year also by the R.O.I. Under 18s.
Like Sean Boyd he arrived at Rovers in the summer of 2014. Having impressed at Templeogue United, Shane began his Hoops career as a defender with the U19’s before moving into the central midfield role he now occupies. He made a memorable debut for the first team away to Athlone in the Leinster Senior Cup last year helping himself to two goals in the 3-0 win. Shane has played four times for the Republic of Ireland U18’s since his move to Rovers.

SEAN BOYD (18) STRIKER
AARON DOBBS (17) STRIKER
Sean has been with Shamrock Rovers for two years. Joining as a 16 year old, he made a great start to his Hoops career finishing the 2014/15 season as top goalscorer for the Under 19s. He made his first team debut in April 2015 with a substitute appearence in the Leinster Senior Cup away to Athlone Town. He made his league debut this season when he came on as a substitute in the 3-0 win against Sligo Rovers at Tallaght Stadium. He scored his first senior goal against Bohs last month, one he will certainly never forget! Earlier this summer he played twice for the Republic of Ireland Under 18s.
Aaron joined The Hoops last summer after proving himself a prolific goalscorer at schoolboy level. From Enniscorthy in Wexford, his first season as a Rovers player couldn’t have gone any better as the U17 side he was part of won the league with him scoring in nearly every game. Following this he was moved up to the Under 19s for the current season. He made his debut for the first team last year in the Leinster Senior Cup final away to Dundalk when he scored Rovers’ goal on the night. This season Aaron made his first team league match debut in June when he came on as a substitute for Gary Shaw late in the 2-0 win away to St. Patrick’s Athletic.
SHAMROCK ROVERS MAY HAVE JUST LOST THEIR MANAGER BUT THAT DIDN’T STOP THEM TAKING THE BRAGGING RIGHTS LAST WEEK IN THE DUBLIN DERBY AS THEY BEAT BOHS 3-1.

BRADLEY STEPS UP Following the end of Pat Fenlon’s reign at the start of last month Stephen Bradley was cast into the role of first team manager and made an incredible start to his new job with a dream 3-1 win at home to Bohs in his very first league game. BY PADRAIG CONLON @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG
Morale around the place had been very low prior to Nutsy’s farewell and some fans said the pitiful 0-2 defeat at home to RoPS in the Europa League was as bad as they’d ever seen. As fate would have it Stephen Bradley’s first game in charge would be the second leg of that tie and he almost inspired The Hoops to overcome their first leg set back with a very credible 1-1 draw in a game they deserved to win. So what was the first week in charge like for the 31 year old Jobstown native? “It was interesting, different,” he says. “On the pitch was fine, once we got to the stadium I was comfortable. The other stuff around it took a bit of getting used to but the players went about training as normal and so did I.” When the club offered him the job until the end of the season he said it was a “no brainer.” “I thought about it for a few minutes. Someday I wanted to go into managing, sure what’s the point in doing the coaching and not testing yourself?” he says. “It’s come quicker than expected. I spoke with Pat (Fenlon) and he said he was 32 when he took his first job and that I’d be
70 // #intallaght / TWEET US
crazy not to do it. Pat said to me that he’s always there at the other end of the phone for little tips. I’ve asked him about one or two things already. He’s been excellent. I spoke to him three or four times.’ The board have given him full authority on football operations and will support whatever decisions he makes with regard to players coming in or out of the club. The Tallaght man has done an outstanding job juggling his role as Director of Coaching with the Schoolboys with his duties as first team assistant for the last two years. “I was in with the U19’s before Pat came in and I’ve always enjoyed being involved with the kids and the youth side of things,” he says. His innate knowledge of the youth set up at the club led him to put his trust in three youngsters for that debut with Bohs as he gave a first league start to 17-year-old striker Aaron Dobbs, with Sean Boyd and Trevor Clarke also involved from the bench and they didn’t let him down with Dobbs setting up Dean Clarke for a goal before Boyd wrapped up all three points with a fine debut goal 20 minutes from the end.
“Dobbs was excellent,” says Bradley. “His first game, at 17 years of age. I was talking to Twiggy there and he couldn’t believe how good he was for a kid in his first big Dublin game.” The day before the derby Rovers announced they had signed pro forms with Dobbs and Boyd as well as their fellow under 19’s James Doona and Shane Hanney. “Them kids are only going to get better,” Bradley says. “This club has a lot of kids like that ready to come through, they will get their chance. With the young lads we have in the team, they just give you that passion and the will to run and the desire to go out and fight teams, and just be hard to play against.” This focus on youth which Rovers are taking is something Bradley wholeheartedly supports: “I’ve always said I believe we’ve got to change something in Irish football and this is the way to do it,” he says. “What the club are trying to do is massive. We want to give young Irish players an alternative to going to England at 15. Why would you go away on a two year YTS when you can play 40 games by the age of 18 and then if you go, you do so
WHAT THE CLUB ARE TRYING TO DO IS MASSIVE. WE WANT TO GIVE YOUNG IRISH PLAYERS AN ALTERNATIVE TO GOING TO ENGLAND AT 15 as a first team player rather than a youth YTS. Rovers have looked long term and thought “we’re the biggest club, lets go and lead this.” It’s great to see them put their money into youth development.”
As well as his roles at Rovers, Stephen is also a senior scout for Premiership giants Arsenal with responsibility for covering the island of Ireland. So what did Arsene Wenger say when he told him he’d been offered the Shamrock Rovers job? “He’s happy. He told me I must take it as it’s great experience. “He said, ‘go with your gut, and with what you feel. The boss, as I call him, and Steve Rowley, who is the chief scout, gave me permission to go and do it.” From his own experience as a footballer, who are the managers that will influence his style of leadership? “John Hughes in Falkirk was brilliant,” he says. “He encouraged us to play football the right way. Also obviously the boss at Arsenal was brilliant, Paul Doolan who I had here and at Drogheda. You take bits from everyone really but at the end of
the day it has to be my way of doing it and my way of playing.” His lack of senior coaching badges mean he can only lead the team for 60 days and then apply for a special exemption to extend it to 90 days, which would take him close to the end of the season. In spite of the positive start to his first team managerial career he says he wants to return to work with the youths come the end of the season. “My plan is to go back and finish what I started with the schoolboys, it always has been,” he says. “I believe the club has something special going on in terms of what they’re investing in and the young boys we have around the place. “I believe in 2 or 3 years time the youth set up here is going to be something really good so I want to have a big impact on that.”
