Disney Cars Choose Tallaght Fiat Disney Pixar has chosen the FIAT 500 to help promote the new CARS 2 movie in Ireland. The FIAT 500 in question, a TwinAir Lounge model, has been covered in an elaborate promotional wrap, complete with windscreen "eyes" similar to those of the characters in the film. One of the main storylines of the new film revolves around the character Luigi, which is based on an original FIAT 500. We meet Luigi's Uncle Topolino and Mama Topolino for the first time when the World Grand Prix series arrives in his home town of Porto Corsa in Italy. Disney Pixar's CARS 2 opens in cinemas across Ireland on July 22nd while the FIAT 500 TwinAir is available from FIAT dealers across the country from â‚Ź14,295 + delivery. Tallaght Fiat Airton road will launch the second part of their successful "Be Road Safe" campaign from September 2011. This campaign was initiated by Michael Kerslake from Tallaght Fiat to highlight the awareness of road safety in local schools. 2,500 road safety packs were distributed to local schools earlier this year and proved to be a hugely successful and positive initiative. From September 2011 another 2,500 safety packs will be given to local schools just before the dark evenings come in. The pack also includes a copy of the "Safe Cross Code" (are you old enough to remember the song?) Teachers and parents are encouraged to discuss with students the dangers that our roads can pose. By being aware of these dangers students can play their part in making our local roads safer. This campaign is endorsed and supported by the Road Safety Authority and by Fiat Ireland. Any school interested in receiving the "Be Road Safe" packs can email info@tallaghtfiat.ie 06

Comic Con Comes To Dublin The inaugural Movie Fest, modelled on the massively successful “Comic Con” annual event held in the US, will take place at Cineworld Cinemas in Dublin on August 13 / 14. The event will showcase, for the general public, exclusive footage from upcoming Hollywood blockbusters along with previews of Hollywood films not due for release until late 2011. Day tickets are available for purchase for the event, and each day will include two high-profile feature film previews along with presentations from all major Hollywood studios. These presentations will feature a huge selection of extensive never-before-seen footage and trailers from some of the most highly anticipated films of 2011 and 2012. “We really wanted to bring an event for film fans to Dublin that had an air of genuine excitement around it,” commented Vincent Donnelly, creator of Movie Fest. “We had taken note of how huge Comic Con has become in the US, now attracting thousands of people and the biggest stars, and wanted to try to recreate some of that excitement here. Irish audiences, among the most frequent moviegoers in the world, can sometimes be neglected when it comes to access to an all-inclusive event like this, and we wanted to make sure that while it was modelled on Comic Con, it’s a very unique event,” he continued. The schedule on Saturday August 13th includes advance screenings of Colin Farrell’s latest film, Fright Night, along with The Change Up, the latest film from the writers of The Hangover, starring Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman. Sunday’s schedule includes advance screenings of the highly anticipated sci-fi / western Cowboys and Aliens starring Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig, plus 30 Minutes or Less, the latest film from the director of Zombieland, starring Jesse Eisenberg from The Social Network. With the event taking place over the course of two full days, movie fans will be able to immerse themselves and whet their appetites for some of the biggest films due for release over the next year, with a surprise or two in store including specially recorded greetings from some A-list filmmakers and actors. Both days will feature extensive presentations with several hours worth of exclusive footage and trailers on view, including material from Twilight: Breaking Dawn, the new Steven Soderbergh movie Haywire which was shot in Ireland, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark from director Guillermo del Toro, Tower Heist starring Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy, an exclusive four minute preview of The Adventures of TinTin, Stephen Spielberg’s upcoming epic, 3D footage from the highly anticipated The Amazing SpiderMan, and a five minute clip from the new Total Recall. Movie Fest takes place at Cineworld Cinemas, Parnell Centre, Dublin on August 13th and 14th, the full schedule can be seen on www.movies.ie/fest Day tickets are on sale from Cineworld's box office or online at www.cineworld.ie (advance booking section).

Tallaght Author Publishes New Book On The Roots Of The Irish Army

Movie Fest Brings

Mary Clare Collins-Powell O' Malley (Grandniece of General Michael Collins) and Michael J. Whelan (Author) at the launch of “Allegiances Compromised”

The South County Dublin Library service has just published ‘Allegiances Compromised: Faith, Honour and Allegiance, Ex British Soldiers in the Irish Army 1913-1924’ by Michael J. Whelan, a local author and historian. The book explores the stories of Irish men who fought in the British Army in World War I, and then returned home and joined the effort to fight for Ireland’s independence. Their military expertise and war experience were invaluable to the Volunteers and the Irish Army, yet they were treated with suspicion and, in some cases, contempt by their fellow Irishmen for their perceived disloyalty. Allegiances Compromised is available to purchase from all branches of South Dublin Libraries, priced €5, or by contacting Síle Coleman or Colette Carpenter at +353 (0)1 4620073 or localstudies@sdublincoco.ie. It will shortly be available to borrow in hardcopy from library branches and in ebook format from their Download Zone. 07

Blackpanthers Kickboxing Club hold Tournament in Brookfield

Deputy Eamonn Maloney TD Welcomes the Electoral (Amendment) Bill 2011 Deputy Eamonn Maloney has welcomed the Electoral (Amendment) Bill 2011 which is going to provide the legislation for wide ranging changes to the Irish Parliamentary system. The bill will reduce the size and cost of Government, by cutting the number of TDs, abolishing the Seanad, compulsorily holding by-elections within 6 months of a vacancy arising and reducing the spending limits in Presidential elections. The Dublin South West TD and local historian, speaking in the Dail, welcomed the intention to establish a constitutional commission which will provide a great opportunity for citizens to express their opinions on how this country's constitution should be reformed and modernised. In relation to the reform of the Dail and the reduction in the number of TDs, Deputy Maloney expressed the view that the Minister could go further. He reminded the Dail of the late North Cork Fianna Fail TD and Senator, Sean Moylan (1888-1957) who independently argued that the size of the Dail was too big for the size of the nation. He agreed with the Cork man and would have no difficulty in supporting a further reduction in the numbers of TDs. Speaking in support of the abolishment of the Seanad, Deputy Maloney said that he was a life-long opponent of the Seanad due to its roots in elitism. He continued "I hear people talking about how important for democracy it is to preserve the Upper House. I have never heard one of these people refer to the representation of one of the largest sections of Irish society, the almost 500,000 unemployed people. I did not hear a single person raise the issue of someone representing the unemployed in the Seanad during the recent Seanad election campaign".

Local Kickboxing Club, Blackpanthers, are holding a Junior Tournament on the 6th August in the clubs training centre in Brookfield Community Centre, Brookview Avenue, Brookfield (Opposite St. Aidan’s School). The event is to help raise funds for the club which has been in the area for over 20 years. Norman Kelly (Head Coach) and his highly skilled team of instructors have a great reputation in the local communities for helping the local kids stay out of trouble and teaching them the art of kickboxing. The event will showcse all the local talent in the junior age categories as they compete against other young fighters from other clubs around the country. There will also be some senior exchibiton fights on the night, with the clubs very own Irish Champions, Rebecca Dillon, Richie Kiely and Martin Kenny making apperances. The 3 fighters mentioned above are all representing Ireland at the WAKO World Championship in Citywest in November, a great achievement for the Club to have 3 fighters representing their country at the same time. It will be a great night, so get yourselves down to the club for 5.00pm and show your support. Adminssion: Only ₏10.00. 09

The squad went through their rigorous training drills in front of the impressive gathering and afterwards the players signed autographs and posed for photos. “Leo the Lion also proved to be a hit off the field, meeting supporters and posing for photographs as the crowd enjoyed the fine conditions.

After three hugely successful series, the boys are hitting the big screen. The trailer for The Inbetweeners movie, which comes out this month has finally been released and if the couple of minutes of exceptionally crude comedy shown are anything to go by, all fans of the hit E4 sitcom will not be disappointed. The new trailer, which follows on from the release of a teaser trailer last month, shows series regulars Will (Simon Bird), Jay (James Buckley), Neil (Blake Harrison) and Simon (Joe Thomas) as they jet off on a lads’ holiday in Malia, Crete after graduating from sixth form. For those not in the know, The Inbetweeners was an award-winning British sitcom which aired for three series from 2008 and followed the lives of four teenage friends growing up in suburban England. Despite winning a number of top awards, including Best New TV Comedy 2008 and Best Sitcom 2011 at the British Comedy Awards, it was announced that a fourth series was unlikely as the show had run its course. The Inbetweeners writer, Damon Beesley, who has also penned the movie with series co-creator, Iain Morris, admitted that continuing with The Inbetweeners once the four main characters had reached university age was not really a possibility. “When you go to university, it’s a different period of your life and you have to start thinking about your impact on the

18

world around you” he told Empire magazine. "Here, they're at this glorious age where they do what they like and no-one picks them up on it. They go out into the big, wide, real world, learn some lessons on the way and do a bit of growing up. This is the final piece of the jigsaw." There is some concern as to whether the movie spinoff will be able to sustain itself over a feature-length running time but the writers have cited some recent examples of TV shows such as The Simpsons and South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut which have successfully adapted to the big screen so only time will tell. Morris admitted: "For 25 minutes you'll stay with people because they're idiots and they're making you laugh," he noted. "But my experience of watching films is that you have to give audiences something to hold on to, to help you stay with them." Regulars from the TV series Emily Head, Belinda Stewart-Wilson and Greg Davies will return for the film, with newcomers Lydia Rose Bewley, Laura Haddock, Jessica Knappett and Tamla Kari rounding out the cast. The Inbetweeners movie opens in Irish cinemas on August 19. Scan the barcode to see the trailer.

From the creative minds that brought you the award winning TV show (creators & writers Damon Beesley and 20

Blockbuster filmmaker Jon Favreau directs Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford in an event film for summer 2011 that crosses the classic Western with the alien-invasion movie in a blazingly original way: Cowboys & Aliens. Joined by an arsenal of top moviemakers-Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci-he brings an all-new action thriller that will take audiences into the Old West, where a lone cowboy leads an uprising against a terror from beyond our world. 1873. Arizona Territory. A stranger (Craig) with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town of Absolution. The only hint to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles one wrist. What he discovers is that the people of Absolution don’t welcome strangers, and nobody makes a move on its streets unless ordered to do so by the ironfisted Colonel Dolarhyde (Ford). It’s a town that lives in fear. But Absolution is about to experience fear it can scarcely comprehend as the desolate city is attacked by marauders from the sky. Screaming down with breathtaking velocity and blinding lights to abduct the helpless one by one, these monsters challenge everything the residents have ever known. Throne watchers now have another date to focus on, this time an official one. It has finally been confirmed that on August 8, Jay-Z and Kanye West will release their highly anticipated joint LP, Watch the Throne, digitally on iTunes. Compact disc lovers will be able to purchase physical copies a few days later on August 12. But when searching for the CD at local retail spots, fans shouldn't look under "J" for Jay or "W" for West, but rather "T," as the duo has officially christened their group the Throne. A press release sent out by Hov's camp also confirms an official 12-song track list, with four bonus tracks slated for the LP's deluxe version. RZA, the Neptunes and Kanye himself all contribute to the production side of things, while Beyoncé, Frank Ocean and Mr Hudson make guest appearances. There is a sampled posthumous performance from 1960s soul singer Otis Redding on the aptly titled "Otis." The previously released "H.A.M." doesn't appear on the album proper but instead is earmarked as a Watch the Throne bonus on the deluxe version. Release Date: 08 August, 2011

Fresh from an intimate acoustic Irish tour this July, Fionn Regan returns to our record shops with new album ‘100 Acres of Sycamore’. A talented singer songwriter from Bray, Regan cites Bob Dylan and Neil Young as influences. His debut album was nominated for the Mercury in 2006. While his 2nd album was more blues than folk, this 3rd would seem a return to his folk roots. A single of the same name has been available on his website for the last few months to whet our appetite for more of his beautifully gentle folk, enriched with layers of soaring instrumentation, and an equally melancholic and hopeful vocal. Judging by its atmospheric and mesmerising sound, which perfectly supports Fionn's trademark pure and almost haunting vocals, the forthcoming album will undoubtedly be one of the strongest Irish indie releases of 2011. The news coming out of Comic Con just gets more and more exciting. Steven Spielberg made his first appearance at Comic Con on Friday, and Variety is reporting that he announced that there will in fact be a "Jurassic Park 4." News that it'd be ready "in the next two or three years" set Twitter on fire with excited responses. Spielberg was on the panel for DreamWorks' "Adventures of Tin Tin," and overshadowed the promotion of that film with the announcement of the bringing of the franchise back to life. The Hollywood Reporter reported back in June that Spielberg was in talks with screenwriter Mark Prostosevich to get the film going. Now, with Spielberg confirming that the film already has a story, Twitter is more than excited. We could even see the next film in the billion dollar series as soon as 2013 or 2014.

The Cygnet is based on Toyota’s iQ minicar but gets some very distinct Aston Martin trademarks to differentiate it from its more mundane sibling. Aston Martin has also unveiled two limited edition Cygnets.

As their names suggest, one is decked out in a white exterior finish and the other in black. Special features include chrome trim, leather seats with Alcantara inserts, and a bespoke Bill Amberg five-piece luggage set.

The two Cygnet ‘Launch Edition’ models; White and Black, are available with either standard manual or optional CVT automated transmission and each will be produced for a strictly limited time.

Aston Martin claims that the new Cygnet has generated high levels of interest. The car will initially ship with a 1.3-liter four-cylinder petrol engine but by late 2013 an all-electric version with a 60 mile range is expected to arrive.

The Mini John Cooper Works has received an extreme make-over. It will be offered in a Pepper White, Pure Silver, Midnight Black, British Racing Green, or Eclipse Grey body contrasting with a Chili Red roof. There are also standard-fitted 17-inch light-alloy wheels in a Cross Spoke Challenge design. The interior gets black sports seats featuring contrasting red stitching and trim elements in Chili Red. The steering wheel rim, gearshift lever, and handbrake lever gaiters also have contrasting red stitching. Another exclusive option is the new Lounge 01 34

Leather seats with red piping. The instruments of these three model variants are fitted as standard with anthracite-colored dials. Under the hood there is a four-cylinder engine delivering 211 HP.

However, not just anyone will be able to buy a Cygnet. In order to be eligible to buy one, customers must already own an Aston Martin. The luxury automaker has identified that around 30% of existing customers have small cars such as a Mini or Smart ForTwo in their garages for city traffic. .....................................................

Apple’s new Mac Mini features some welcome updates and a controversial omission, but overall it remains in the same competitive middle ground as its earlier incarnations. No other system in its price range comes close to the Mac Mini's pleasing, compact design, and this €599 model brings some welcome performance improvements, along with the still-developing potential of its Thunderbolt port. Competing slim-tower PCs from the Windows side of the aisle offer more features for the same price, among them optical drives, which Apple has left off its new small form factor desktop. That decision makes the Mac Mini more of a niche computer than ever before. If you're a member of a niche who might benefit from owning an affordable Mac desktop with decent performance and a promising new input standard, the Mac Mini is a reasonable deal. Value shoppers and living room PC enthusiasts with large DVD collections, this is not the desktop for you. The only major design change to the new Mac Mini comes to the front

panel, which now has a continuous aluminum face instead of a slot for Apple's SuperDrive DVD burner. We expect that some potential buyers would happily sacrifice the new clean look for an optical drive, but with or without the slot, the Mac Mini remains one of the best-looking computers available. As with last year's edition, which debuted the new Mac Mini chassis, a plastic piece on the bottom twists off to allow user memory slot access. The absence of the optical drive on the Mac Mini will likely provide the biggest point of uncertainty for shoppers contemplating a purchase, particularly for those hoping to bring the Mac Mini into the living room. The HDMI port still allows you to connect it to a TV, but with no DVD drive you will need to weigh the importance of your disc-based media. You could consider adding an external USB optical drive, and Apple offers one for €79, but that would arguably compromise the appeal of the Mac Mini's tidy design. However, given the amount of downloadable software available for purchase from Amazon, the iTunes Store, the Mac App Store, Steam, and elsewhere, we find Apple's anti-disc stance reasonable. Other updates to the Mac Mini include a move to Intel's new second-generation Core i5 CPUs, a new version of OS X, code-named Lion, and, of course, the high-speed Thunderbolt port. You can read our review of Lion in the Tech Advice Section of this magazine by our new contributor Ratham Girdhari of TechPros, but note that because the Mac Mini does not include input devices, you will need to purchase the €69 Apple Magic Track Pad if you want to use Lion's new gesturebased input commands.

With people living longer lives and a greater awareness of illnesses such as Alzheimer’s and dementia it is recommended that people take steps to protect themselves and their family’s future when they are still young and healthy. An effective method of ensuring that you and your family are adequately protected as you grow older is by drafting a document known as an Enduring power of Attorney. An Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA) is a simple legal document, which allows a person to grant another person authority to manage some or all of their affairs in circumstances where they become I’ll and lose mental capacity. EPA’s are becoming increasingly more popular and we at O’Brien Ronayne Solicitors specialise in drafting such documentation. An EPA is an important and recommended document to put in place as it allows people to plan for their future and to be assured that their affairs will be taken care of by people they trust. If a person in Ireland becomes mentally incapacitated as a result of illness, disability or an accident, all of the persons assets are usually frozen and can not be used by anyone else unless the assets are in joint names or unless someone is granted power of attorney to deal with the property. Making an EPA is therefore very important as it ensures that if a person does lose mental capacity their future and the future of their families can be protected. The drafting of an EPA also prevents against a person being made a Ward of Court which is a very expensive and time consuming process involving an application to the High Court. Who Can Make An EPA? In order to make an EPA a person must 40

have full mental capacity. It is therefore important that a person makes an EPA when they are young and healthy. In order for an EPA to be properly executed, it must contain a declaration from the General Medical Practitioner of the person making the EPA (known as the donor). The statement from the GP must declare that the person making the EPA had full mental capacity at the time the document was made and that the person making the EPA fully understood the powers of the EPA How Do I Make An EPA? An EPA is a relatively simple document, however because it is a hugely important document it must be in a particular format and include particular items. An Enduring Powers of Attorney is regulated by the Powers of Attorney Act 1996 which requires the EPA to be created in a very specific format, this is to ensure that you are protected by the law when making such an important document. In order for an EPA to be valid it must contain: • A statement from the donor’s doctor regarding full mental capacity • A statement from the donor themselves stating that they understand the powers and effects of the EPA • A statement from your solicitor stating that he/she believes the donor fully understands the powers of the EPA and that the donor was not being influenced by third parties into making their decision. What Powers Are Granted By An EPA? An EPA allows a person to grant powers to another person to deal with and make decisions regarding all aspects

of a person’s life.. The person(s) granted these powers under the EPA are known as the Attorney(s). A person can have either one or two attorneys. An EPA can be as specific or as general in the granting of powers, as a person likes. A general EPA grants the attorney full power to make all decisions regarding a person’s financial, property and business affairs. An EPA also allows the Attorney to make ‘personal care decisions’ on the donor’s behalf. Personal care decisions can include decisions regarding: • Where a person should live • The type of training or rehabilitation a person should receive • The type of diet a person should be on • Decisions relating to a person’s dependent children • And decisions regarding social welfare and other benefits. Importantly it is held that personal care decisions does not include the powers to make medical decisions, and an Attorney can therefore not consent to medical treatments or procedures on behalf of the donor. In order for an EPA to be an effective legal document, it is necessary for the donor to notify at least two other people known as notice parties. These notice parties must include the donor spouse if living with the donor, or a child of the donor or a close relative of the donor. In these circumstances relative can mean for example a grandchild, niece, nephew, sibling or cousin. Registration The EPA can only come into force when it has been registered. In order for the EPA to come into force the donor must have lost mental capacity and be unable to properly look after their own affairs.

In order to register an EPA the attorney must apply to the High Court looking for the EPA to be implemented. Before the EPA can be registered the Attorney must lodge with the court a medical certificate confirming the donor has lost mental capacity. The Donor must also serve their application on the donor and on the notice parties to ensure there is no objection to the EPA being granted. The court has a supervisory role with regard to the registration of the EPA. The court can have the power to give directions regarding the management and disposal of the property. The court can also refuse the registration or terminate the EPA in circumstances where they believe the donor: • Has sufficient mental capacity

• Where fraud or undue pressure is proved to have been used in the creation of the power • Or where the attorney is held to be unsuitable. Once an Enduring Power of Attorney has been registered, it cannot be revoked unless the Court agrees to do this. An EPA is obviously a very important document as it gives a person the freedom to plan and make their own choices about how they want to live their life. Everyone knows that it is important to make a Will but a Will only comes into effect on death. It is equally important to make an EPA so that you can be properly looked after in life.

Mac OS X Lion has more than 250 new features, many of them small, but all seemingly with the idea of making current common processes easier. The strong focus on multitouch gestures indicates Apple's focus on its more popular notebook line, but makes many helpful changes that desktop users will appreciate as well. Mac OS X is not without its annoyances. We found some features to be a little gimmicky, like Launchpad for launching apps like an iOS device, but we also think carrying over the design aesthetic will probably help new users (whose only experience with Apple is through the iPhone) to acclimate to Mac OS X more quickly. We also believe it's a bad user experience to force people to buy Snow Leopard before being able to buy Lion. It almost seems like a punishment for not upgrading at every available opportunity. Although Apple has a pretty good reason (Snow Leopard introduced the Mac App Store), it seems there ought to be some way for users to upgrade without the additional cost. Still, to get all these features for â‚Ź60 (if you don't have Snow Leopard) is not all that bad in our estimation, it just feels unfair. Nevertheless, the features in Mac OS X Lion will make for an excellent upgrade for the price (â‚Ź23.99), whether for a Mac desktop or notebook. Upgrades that make the Mail app more useful; the addition of the very well-designed Mission Control; smart innovations like resume, autosave, versions; and AirDrop will all be welcome additions for any Mac user. For Snow Leopard owners, this upgrade is a no-brainer. For those who 42

own an older system, it's probably still worth biting the bullet and adding several new features to the Mac operating system. For those who work on Windows machines who are thinking about crossing over to Mac, Lion makes it easier to make the switch, with tools that import your most important data and personal files. Lion will automatically transfer your Outlook and Windows contacts, Outlook calendars, e-mail accounts (including Outlook and Windows Live mail), and all your music in iTunes. You can also import your home directory folder and contents, so you'll be able to find your most important files right away. It will even import your browser bookmarks from Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari and sync up your localisation info and desktop picture. It's no surprise that Apple would streamline this process to maximise new users, but we can appreciate the lengths it went to make the transition as smooth as possible. To summarise, Mac OS X Lion is definitely a worthy upgrade for all Intel Mac users. Featuring several interface enhancements and useful new features across all the core apps, Mac OS X Lion is an excellent update for the price. .....................................................

Contouring the face is easy. It will give structure and dimension to any face shape. The general rule for contour is; contour areas on your face that you want to have more shape and depth i.e. your chin, nose, and cheeks as well as your forehead. There are five face shapes: round, oval, square, heart shaped and long. The contour areas will change depending on the shape of your face.

This month I’ll be looking at Om Diva of Drury street in the heart of the city. The owner Ruth is very nice and the atmosphere is lovely. Om Diva is full of vintage finds like prints, silk as well faux fur and really cool jewellery, as well as Irish designers selling their wares upstairs. I’ll be looking at a vintage look and a design from my range that you can find in this little treasure of a shop. I teamed this dress with a faux fur jacket which are always really big, especially coming into the Winter. I also put a nice trilby with it as I think mixing and matching is the key to a good vintage look.

Dita von Teese wears 50’s glamour really well while Fearne Cotton focuses on the edgy side of vintage. For a good vintage look I’d say have a good pair of wedges, a nice hat, vintage dress or playsuit and team it with a pair of vintage gloves, a really nice hairstyle and a matte red lipstick. Clothes which where produced before the 1920s is referred to as antique clothing and clothing in the 1920’s to 1980’s is considered vintage. Vintage clothing designed by the following designers are in demand such as Coco Chanel, Paul Pore, Christian Dior, and YSL. Good places to find nice vintage clothing are eBay, Etsy and Very.co.uk.

My designs are based on Alice in Wonderland, which is based on unrealism so not something you could necessarily wear on a day to day basis but I like fantasy and when you wear good clothes you feel different. Check out my Design Page on Facebook, Rachel Fallon Designing.

On another note, I’m entering a competition for my hat (left) to go to a gallery in New York. If people could support me on Rachel Fallon Portfolio on Talent house, I’d really appreciate it.

Your pectorals are the powerhouses of your upper body. Neglect them and you’ll soon find your strength and muscle gains stalling. And blitzing through regular bench presses, we’re afraid, will only take you so far. Instead, grab a couple of dumb-bells and do this 30-minute workout just once a week to build impeccable pecs in no time. Incline Dumb-Bell Bench Press (Fig 1A & 1B) Sets 3-4 Reps 7-10 Rest 90 seconds Lie down on a bench set at a 30-degree angle, holding two dumb-bells against your chest. Press the dumb-bells up all the way, fully extending the arms without snapping your elbows out, then return to the start position. Now perform a full rep as normal pressing the dumb-bells up until your arms are fully extended. That’s one rep.

Hi, my name is Gwen and I’m the new book review columnist for InTallaght magazine. I’ve been part of the team, working away in the background, helping with the graphic design of the magazine since the start, but the lads have asked me to contribute a book review every month, and to recommend some of my favourite novels to you all. This month’s selection is the most recent novel by one of my favourite authors, Ian McEwan. You might recognise his name as the author of Atonement, the 2001 novel that was made into a film in 2007. It starred James McAvoy, Keira Knightley, and Saoirse Ronan (cover star of the May edition of InTallaght magazine). But enough about his past work and on to the book in hand. Solar is a satirical novel which focuses on climate change. The protagonist Michael Beard is an aging, bald, overweight and unprepossessing Nobel prize–winning physicist whose best work is behind him. Trading on his reputation, he speaks for enormous

fees, lends his name to the letterheads of renowned scientific institutions, and half-heartedly heads a government-backed initiative tackling global warming. While he coasts along in his professional life, Michael’s personal life is another matter entirely. His fifth marriage is crumbling under the weight of his infidelities. But this time the tables are turned: His wife is having an affair, and Michael realizes he is still in love with her. When Michael’s personal and professional lives begin to intersect in unexpected ways, an opportunity presents itself in the guise of an invitation to travel to New Mexico. Here is a chance for him to extricate himself from his marital problems, reinvigorate his career, and very possibly save the world from environmental disaster. One of the central questions of the book is whether a man who has made a

mess of his life can clean up the messes of humanity? Having enjoyed his previous novels, I was really looking forward to reading this book. I was not disappointed. Despite the main character being for all intents and purposes a very unlikeable character, I found myself rooting for him in all his pathetic attempts to improve himself and win his wife back. The cleverness of McEwan’s writing and the underlying theme of climate change made this an engrossing read. I’d thoroughly recommend reading Solar, and any other Ian McEwan novels you come across while you’re at it.

Ian McEwan was born on 21 June 1948 in Aldershot, England. He studied at the University of Sussex, where he received a BA degree in English Literature in 1970. He received his MA degree in English Literature at the University of East Anglia. McEwan's works have earned him worldwide critical acclaim, from first winning the Somerset Maugham Award in 1976 for his first collection of short stories First Love, Last Rites; winning the Man Booker Prize for Amsterdam in 1998, to being awarded the Jerusalem prize this year. McEwan lives in London. His most recent novel is Solar. For more information visit his website at

HOW TO MAKE CHEAP WEED KILLER Pour 4oz of lemon juice concentrate into a 2 pint spray bottle, then fill the bottle up with approximately 28oz of white vinegar. Shake vigorously and spray on to the weeds you may be required to do this again after about a week or so.

HOLIDAYS Before you go away on holiday try and arrange for somebody to come round and water your containers. If they cannot come every day, take steps to cut down on watering requirements by repositioning all containers and hanging baskets in a shaded area out of the sun. Clay pots can be stood on trays filled with wet gravel. If you have a very elaborate summer display with window-boxes and hanging baskets, it may be worthwhile considering installing an automatic watering system controlled by a timer. On returning from your holiday you should dead-head the plants in the hanging baskets, dead-head the tubs and generally reviving the garden by this sort of maintenance technique. Deadheading bedding, roses and other plants will all help to bring the garden back to life again after your absence.

MOVING PLANTS If you are not quite happy with the colour of a certain flower in a specific place, tie a piece of cotton or thread in the colour of the floweraround the plant. When the plant has finished flowering, you will be able to remind yourself of the colour the flower was and re-plant it in a more appropriate place. Colourful plastic golf tees can be placed in the ground to mark the location of dormant plants such as spring bulbs or perennials.

cut the younger leaves rinse in clean water and after putting them in a plastic bag place in the freezer. There is no need to chop them up simply crush them gently when frozen and use as required. .....................................................

HERBS FOR BEGINNERS Lemon balm and mint are both very good herbs for beginners to grow because they grow well in pots, grow quickly and are easy to keep. If you don't have much money or space, thyme is also worth a try. It grows to fill small spaces like paving stone cracks and spreads well on its own so you don't have to buy lots of plants. Rosemary and sage are also good choices, because they produce attractive flowers which entice bees. Many herbs self-sow if the flowers are not removed. Dill produces seeds that fall around the parent plant and come up the following spring. Freeze your herbs. For a continual supply of fresh herbs, like parsley through the winter

Shamrock Rovers will bring more glamour to the area this month, as the club hosts further Champions League action in Tallaght Stadium. The Hoops will kick-off August with their Champions League, 3rd Qualifying Round, second leg game against FC Copenhagen on Tuesday (August 2). The Danish side take a 1-0 lead into the game, but the Hoops will be hoping to be able to do enough at home to progress in the competition. See shamrockrovers.ie for ticketing arrangements. There will also be plenty of Airtricity League action for Rovers during the month of August, with the Hoops taking on Bohemians, UCD and Galway United. And Rovers will also host UCD in the FAI Ford Cup at Tallaght Stadium on August 26, as they continue the campaign to try and make this year’s final at the Aviva Stadium. 54

The name Enda Stevens came to prominence during the 2009 season. The young Drimnagh man was signed for St. Patrick’s Athletic in 2009 by the then manager Jeff Kenna and proved to be an instant success. The former UCD player slotted in as left full in the Saints’ first team and held that spot for most of the season. After just one season at Richmond Park he made the move to rivals Shamrock Rovers. Despite intense pressure from Danny Murphy he succeeded in making the left full spot his own.

The 2011/2012 English Premier League season commences on August 13th and this campaign is set to be even more exciting, intense and controversial then the previous one. With clubs progressing internally through the increased influence of overseas investments alongside new tactics and managers, the up coming season is set to be one of the best yet. There have been some new arrivals into the Premier League this Summer whilst youngsters are developing rapidly and with the league tighter than ever in terms of quality and consistency, no fan can predict the outcome of 2011/2012. Champions Manchester United will be eager to retain their crown and have exercised their dominance by acquiring some big names, including England international Ashley Young. Chelsea are preparing for a new era under newly appointed manager Andres Villas-Boas, who has arrived from UEFA Cup Champions FC Porto to replace Carlo Ancelotti. Manchester City boast even more funds but are preparing for life without heroic leader Carlos Tevez. Arsenal have been quiet all Summer in terms of transfers but could commence the season without star play makers Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri, who are both under a speculation cloud. Liverpool have arguably been the team of the Summer Transfer Window, purchasing the likes of Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam and Stewart Downing to bolster their squad and pose as real title contenders. Tottenham, Everton and Bolton will all be eager to influence the top four whilst Aston Villa prepare for a new direction as Alex McLiesh takes charge of the Villains. Wigan Athletic will be eager to gradually make their way up the EPL table whilst Wolverhampton will also be keen to enforce their tough presence. Aston Villa have completed the signing of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given from Manchester City on a five-year contract. The 35-year-old lost his place in the City team last season to Joe Hart. Villa, whose first-choice keeper Brad Friedel moved to Tottenham Hotspur at the end of last season, paid around â‚Ź3.8m for Given, according to newspaper reports. Given, Ireland's most capped player with 113 international appearances, became Villa manager Alex McLeish's first signing since taking over last month. Newly promoted teams Norwich City, Queens Park Rangers and the first ever Welsh team in the Premier League Swansea, all possess impressive squads and will provide a tough challenge for all opponents. 58
