This month we have another jam-packed issue for you with brand new news features as well as your favourite columinists bringing you the latest fashion, food and films. September marks World Suicide prevention day and this month we speak to Maureen Bolger, the mother of sixteen-year-old Darren who committed suicide back in 2003. Darren’s death prompted Maureen to set up Teenline - the now nationally renowned helpline for concerned, depressed and suicidal teenagers. Maureen talks about the relevance of her work and life after Darren.

DAMAGED streets and non-emergency issues plauging residents will be dealt with in a smart and efficient way thanks to a pilot programme being undertaken by South Dublin County Council. Fixyourstreet is a website on which homeowners and tenants can log on and upload their concerns when it comes to issues such as street lighting, drainage, graffiti, illegal dumping and road and footpath maintenance. Residents can use smart mobile technology to pinpoint the area in question on the site and they can even upload pictures of the problem. Council officials will then take the problem on and will let the concerned residents know within two working days what can/will be done. Mayor of South Dublin County Council, Catriona Jones, said: “We are delighted in the council to be taking on this pilot project. It made sense for us to do it because we have the capacity for it and we already have a very effective tracking system on customer queries.” “What we do is get back to the person within two days. It could be that we can come out in that time to fix it or if it is an ongoing problem then a programme of works may be the solution, in which case residents will be told how and when that solution will be reached. Some people will be sceptical but it is something that we believe will be very successful. We just need to ensure that people understand what it’s about. At the end of the day people will get an effective response and it will be very valuable in terms of being an indicative tool for non-emergency problems.”

Listen - Before It’s Too Late With World Suicide Prevention Day On September 10th Teenline Founder Maureen Bolger Speaks Of The Loss Of Her Precious Son SUICIDE is a tragedy which effects thousands of people, and their families, every year. On September 10th, World Suicide Prevention Day will take place in an effort to raise awareness of that fact and much more because it’s an act that can destroy not only that person but the lives of those they leave behind. No-one knows that better than Teenline founder Maureen Bolger from Tallaght whose son Darren took his own life in 2003 when he was just sixteen.
When he did go however she found that rather than turn to their own parents or each other to talk his friends would come to her and asked ‘What do we do now? Who do we talk to?’ and from there the idea of Teenline came about. Maureen said: “Darren left a note to say he was sorry and that it was best for him but there was no indication, there was no drink involved, no drugs. He was the most happy-golucky person you would ever meet. I just kept asking why?”
His tragic passing was a complete shock to Maureen, who believed him to be very happy, and his death led her to set up a support system, three years later, for teenagers with suicidal thoughts or depression. Last year Teenline received some 18,000 calls. “We have seen a rapid increase to our service in the last five years. We are trying to reach as many people as we can through our helpline and so we are always encouraging anyone to get in touch,” said Maureen. “The world can be a very lonely place and sometimes all people need is someone to listen to them. That’s what we do. We are confidential, we don’t ask for names and numbers and you can talk to us as many times as you like.” Darren Bolger was a happy and healthy teenager with an insatiable zest for life – something which made it all the harder for Maureen to understand.
“I also began thinking about young people and who they could talk to. I realised that as teenagers they could be too young for one service and too old for another.” Darren died weeks after getting beaten up by a gang when he was buying chips in another neighbourhood. He was also bullied from the age of 14 but despite this he was always happy according to Maureen. One thing she regrets she says is not always making a conscious effort to stop and listen.
“My advice to parents is that when a young person is talking to you sit down, face them and really listen. Leave the dinner, leave the washing and just listen. “The thing is a teenager’s problems will be as horrendous to them as our adult ones are to us. It’s about helping them realise that there is life after that first love breakup or that row with their best friend.” She added: “At the end of the day none of us know. Darren could talk to me about anything, sex or whatever, but he couldn’t tell me how he felt and I realise now that it’s not because he didn’t love me, it was because he loved me so much.” World Suicide Prevention Day promotes worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides. For its part Teenline will be holding a boxing night in the National Boxing Stadium on South Circular Road when it goes head to head with members of Pieta House. There will be a full bar on the night with a DJ to follow the main entertainment. Tickets cost €15 for adults and €10 for children. Group rates are available. For tickets call Alicia Gayson on 085 704 0610. The Teenline helpline is open seven days a week from 7-10pm on 1800 833 634 or for information log onto www.teenline.ie. Any parents interested in speaking to Maureen can contact her via Maureen@teenline.ie.

Three Brave Women - one tremendous story of love and hope THE story of three tremendously courageous women, who suffered years of abuse at the hands of their father, will be told in a heart-rending book being launched this month. Ballyfermot sisters Paula, Joyce and June Kavanagh were tortured both sexually and mentally by their father from the ages of four to their teenage years and ‘Click Click’ is the story of that abuse - but it is also one of great bravery and ultimately triumph over the man who stole their childhoods. The novel, which is published by Hachette and is 20 years in the planning, was written with the help of a friend and colleague Marian Quinn who spent two years encouraging the women to share their experiences and collating their harrowing stories. On September 14th, the women will launch the novel in The Sugar Club, which they say has allowed them to heal. Paula, who works for the Childhood Development Initiative in Tallaght told InTallaght: “The book starts with how it came about – our father finally being found out. He abused his grandneice, who then tried to commit suicide and it was after that that her parents decided to tell our mother because they wanted to get together to approach him.” This was the catalyst for the sisters and in 1989 they decided to finally start proceedings which ended with their father being sentenced to seven years in prison – five of which he served. He died one year after his release. Paula said: “The process had its moments, there were stages that were very difficult but we are all delighted that it is finally here [the book]. We want to share our experiences with 08
other people. We have all at one stage or another bought books by other victims of abuse and we realise that what we were trying to do was find something that we could connect with, but everyone deals with abuse in their own way – we three certainly did. So what we are hoping is that between the three of us, others who were abused will connect with at least one of us.” The Kavanagh sisters’ father began grooming his children at around three years of age and by the time of their communion he was raping them. “When he wanted you he’d click his fingers,” June remembers. “He’d click for everything from a cup of tea to the paper but he’d always click and then say ‘tea.’ When he wanted ‘that’ though he’d come up behind you click and stay silent and then you knew you just prayed that it wasn’t going to be you but he’d point upstairs and tell you to go.” There were 10 children in the Kavanagh family and the women’s mother Joyce, who became pregnant with their her child at 16, had no idea what was going on – once told though she turned her back on the children’s father. Joyce: “She was as much a victim as us. He knew what he was doing, he manipulated everything so even though there were so many of us in the house he made it that it would only be you when he wanted.”
“Our father was a very religious man. He would tell us to go to confession to confess what we were doing wrong [the abuse]. By telling us to confess was his way of making sure we felt that we were to blame.” All three women are in agreement that their father was a very sick man and they believe that more research has to be done into paedophilia in search of a cure. Today all three have successful careers and degrees. They each have loving partners and both Joyce and June have nine children between them. As Joyce says the main thing is that the women don’t feel ashamed anymore, while June added: “The book has been a difficult journey in many respects and it has never been about getting back at him, it was about us. We also knew we needed someone special to put it together, and it wouldn’t be finished without Marian - we thank her so much for that.”

Feline Speed Dating At The DSPCA LONELY cats and kittens were the subject of a novel idea by the Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals recently when a Feline Speed Dating event was held. The kitties, who had had their profiles uploaded to the DSPCA site were made available to prospective owners before the event, after which 39 were rehomed. However just one week later the shelter, which is experiencing the trials of kitten season, was full to capacity again which means another such event is most likely. Miriam Kearns, Education Officer at the DSPCA in Rathfarnham told InTallaght: “April is mating season and it’s a time when irresponsible owners, who don’t get their cats neutered, allow them out to mate.” “Not many people know this but when two cats mate the female has six kittens who become sexually active at six months. After this time the mother will mate with one son and at the end of a seven year cycle there will have been 400,000 kittens from that original pairing. This year alone between January and August 2,342 cats have been rescued by us. In July alone we took in almost 300 cats.” “Shelters everywhere are overrun. We are packed to capacity and so we had to do something; so a little while ago we all sat down and said, ‘What are we going to do?’, and what we came up with was feline speed dating. We created profiles and took photos of each and every cat and we put them out there for people to look at before they even attended the event. It was a fantastic success, we will definitely be doing this again - but it is an ongoing process.
Judy
Hi, I'm Judy. I'm 1 year old and I'm black with white markings. I'm a laid back lady. I arrived to the DSPCA as a stray with my kittens. We all went off to a foster home for a while until they were old enough to be re-homed. I'm now ready to find a forever family of my own - will it be with you?
Mrs Norris
Hi, I'm Mrs Norris – An Independent Lady. I'm 2 years old and I have a very pretty coat of tabby-tortoise shell hair. I'm an independent young girl who likes to do things on my own terms. I like cuddles but will come to you when I am ready to have some.
Sparkle
Part of that process is educating people in how to deal with cats and control their multiplication. As part of that the shelter runs a Trap, Neuter and Release (TNR) programme. Marian explained: “If someone has a colony of cats in their garden we ask them to bring them up to the shelter where we will spay and neuter ferrell cats for €25 each - so long as the people agree to take them home again. The problem is simply getting worse and we need to stop it - we can do that if everyone makes an effort.” For €80 a person can get a cat from the shelter which is already spayed (female) or neutered (male). He/she will also be fully vaccinated, dewormed, deflead and microchipped with a clean bill of health from the vet. If you are interested in fostering or adopting a cat call the 01 4994700. The need for a positive and practical reaction to the drugs problem in Tallaght has been catered for, over the past 16 years, by the St Dominic’s Community Response Project. Set up in 1995, the operation came about in answer to the community’s concerns about the deteriorating problem in the area and it’s people’s determination to sort it out. Jackie Blanchfield of the Community Response Project said: “In the late 70s St Dominic’s was the darkest place for drugs in Tallaght. It was the start of the estates and drugs were taking hold. The project was set up in response to that and today the situation has completely changed. That’s not just down to us but we are a part of it.” The idea of the response project is to support service users and their families through a range of services. It does not dispense methadone but instead offers individuals an environment where they may be encouraged to consider decisions regarding their own addiction and to support the changes they wish to make. The project is open from Monday to Friday 9am – 4pm, and operates a general Community Addiction Service.
10
During this time the Therapeutic Team are available to individuals who may wish to avail of one to one support. After an initial meeting where individual needs are assessed, he/she is offered an appropriate service. The FAS Stabilisation Programme (Low Threshold CE) engages active and chaotic drug users in a structured rehabilitative-based programme. The Family Support Group is used by its members as a self-help support group for families who are living with addiction. Tallaght Wellness Clinic was set up in 2010 initially to offer auricular acupuncture to service users and also caters for local residents while the Cocaine Project is a crack/cocaine specific service for people from the greater Dublin area and surrounding counties which offers one to one support, holistic support, advice and information. Jackie added: “Generally we say the door is always open.” .....................................................

Sunday October 2nd is National Trails Day where the entire community, young and old, is invited to go out and explore the many walking routes that are available on their doorstep. On that day South Dublin County Sports Partnership (SDCSP) are inviting people to participate in “Ramble Aid”, a walk from Thomas Davis GAA club on Kiltipper Road, Tallaght up to Bohernabreena reservoir and back. This scenic walk to a hidden part of the county is free of charge but people are asked to make a donation of any size towards famine relief in East Africa. “We were already looking at organising this community walk when the idea came to me that we could combine it with a charity” says Thos Mc Dermott of the SDCSP. “Watching thousands of people on television walking for miles and miles in the search for water while we were planning a walk to the local source of water for South Dublin made a connection”.
12
John Treacy, Chief Executive of the Irish Sports Council which is the principal funder of the SDCSP, is also a Board member of aid agency Concern and is delighted to be involved in the event. “ I think that we are fortunate to have in the area such a beautiful location as the Bohernabreena reservoir walk and despite the difficult economic times at present in Ireland we are also fortunate that we have basic conditions of life such as water readily available. Walking is one of the easiest ways of improving your health and your lifestyle and this event combines that with helping to try and improve the lives of others less fortunate”. The walk to the lower reservoir is 3km (6km return) and to the upper reservoir is 4.25km (8.5km return) while the loop around the reservoir adds another 3.5km onto it, however people can turn back at any stage they want. SDCSP is calling on the
entire community – families, schoolchildren, adults - to participate and is looking forward to what promises to be a great community event. The walk is scheduled to start at 10.30am and there will be refreshments and music entertainment offered. SDCSP would like to thank their supporters for this event including Thomas Davis GAA club, The Echo newspaper group, South Dublin County Council, South Dublin Chamber of Commerce and the HSE Health Promotion Unit through their Get Ireland Active campaign. .....................................................
For More Information Please Contact: The SDCSP office, Tel. 01 4149000 ext 2223, email info@sdcsp.ie or text 086 0441071. More details on the event and where to register and donate online will be made available over the coming weeks.

FRESH from the release of her band’s debut single, Tallaght’s X Factor starlet of 2010, Rebecca Creighton, is flying high with a career that’s on the up. Apt some might say for the Belle Amie girls whose first single, “Girls Up” was released on August 28th and is garnering some positive reviews. Since getting booted off the show in October last year, the original quartet has been reduced to a trio – Rebecca, Esther and Sophia, after Geneva sensationally quit the band back in January. The girls didn’t let it get them down however and went on to secure management, put their album together and are now on the cusp of success. This month InTallaght caught up with Rebecca and had a chat about Belle Amie, her feelings post X Factor, and what she thinks about this year’s new judging panel.
14 01
“Things are going really, really well. We’ve just come from a promotional shoot in a spa and have been pampered like mad! This is the life!”
are just promoting the single. Our album is being released next year. We haven’t thought about a name for it yet, but we have a second single planned for release and we are doing a big tour of the schools to keep ourselves out there.
So we hear the new single is out? How is that going?
Are you hoping that this album will secure you a label?
Our single was released on August 28th. It’s called ‘Girls Up’ and the reception we’ve been getting for it has been really good. It’s definitely been more positive than negative. The thing is we let it go as a free download previously – more than 10,000 people downloaded it for free so when it came to release we weren’t aiming for number one or anything. There was such a high demand already for it that we couldn’t expect that. If we chart that’s a bonus but we are happy that there has already been such interest – our fan base has grown massively.
We are Independent at the moment and are concentrating on promoting ‘Girls Up’, we aren’t thinking like that but hopefully that will happen.
So how are you getting on Rebecca?
So are you touring? At the moment we are not touring, we
Describe the last year for you – how has your life changed? The past year has been such a rollercoaster. We obviously went out of The X Factor in October and we were gigging from then for four nights a week until Christmas. I nearly got stranded in the UK at Christmas because of the snow and in January Geneva left the band so it was all up in the air.
We were all left wondering. We didn’t know if we’d do anything, then there was interest in London. We got management from Duda Donya and we got a really good team behind us. How would you describe Belle Amie’s style? We are all very different in both our musical and fashion styles but what we do now blends them all together. Sophia is very 80s, she’s all retro and The Clash while Esther is quite Urban, she’s all gold earrings and obviously beautiful. I’m a 40s girl. I love Dita Von Teese and Katy Perry but I’m also trying to create my own look. We all have different musical backgrounds too. Sophia’s mam is a jazz singer, I’ve always been more pop and R&B and I have a very musical family. So what do you think of the new judging panel for this year’s X Factor? I saw a clip of the new X Factor yesterday. It looks quite funny. Gary Barlow was telling people to shut up and Tulisa was telling people to shut up! It looks exciting but I don’t know how I feel about it without Simon and Cheryl. What did you think about Cheryl getting kicked off The US X Factor? I thought it was just a media thing at first, a promotional stunt. I honestly thought they would bring her back after a couple of weeks. It seems it wasn’t a stunt though and I get where they are coming from with her accent and everything. If you were an American and you couldn’t understand her then you are not going to vote her way. It is so sad though because she is so good and she was really good to us. In the hallway before our performances she would be there reassuring and calming us down and she just made us feel so much better all the time. She knew how we felt coming from a girl
band herself. I am sure Kelly will do the same for the girls this year though. So if you had any advice for this year’s contestants what would it be? I would say to anyone getting through this year to just 100 per cent be yourself and if you are loud and crazy do not tone it down. I am really loud and crazy and I did tone it down and I regret that. I say give it your all and completely be yourself. What do you think about the success of your fellow Irish contestants Mary Byrne and Jedward? I haven’t been speaking to any of the others, to be honest with you as we have just been so, so busy, but I hear that Mary was in Grease – that’s fantastic. We don’t keep in touch as we are all working on other stuff but it’s great to hear the others doing so well. Jedward are mad but great and deserve their success. And any word/support from the judges? I haven’t been chatting to Louis since the Eurovision which I had to drop out of but he is a gentleman. He has had a rough time of it lately. There should be a law that the media cannot print accusations until they are proven. That could have saved him a lot of stress he didn’t deserve. And finally Rebecca if you had to would you do it all again? If I didn’t get to the live shows I would definitely do it all again – right now!
Belle Amie’s single ‘Girls Up’ is available now to download. See Rebecca’s Column every month in InTallaght throughout the X Factor series and hear exactly what she thinks of the contestants and the judges. 15
IT OPENED to great fanfare and with a host of some of the world’s best snooker players. Now Ken Doherty’s Snooker Academy has almost 1,000 members and a few potential world champions to follow in his footsteps.
earlier a person gets involved the better for their potential career. He said: “There is no age group at all and I don’t think there should be. If they are good enough then they are old enough. We are trying to encourage as many young kids to start – the earlier the better.”
Based at the back of Brady’s pub in Terenure the business opened at the end of May on the final day of the Legends tour, when a crowd of 200 people mingled with snooker heroes like Doherty himself, John Taylor, Kirk Stevens and John Parrot.
“That’s the whole idea of the academy. Kids that don’t do or like contact sports might find a place for themselves here and even those who do like them but have an interest in snooker are very welcome.”
Three months on business is booming and the academy, which is home to six snooker tables (four eight ball tables, a nine ball table and a half size snooker table), a pool table, table tennis area, darts corner and a Poker Club, is hoping to be the place where the next big Irish player is discovered.
A special waiver for membership at the club has been extended until the end of September. This means that those wishing to join within that time will not have to pay the standard yearly fee of €99 for the first year. Members of the club will enjoy a preferred play rate and are entitled to take part in all competitions and tournaments.
Snooker legend Doherty told InTallaght that he is proud of the club and hopes that both parents and budding snooker champions will see it as the safe and homely environment like he found in Jason’s of Ranelagh as a child. “Things are going really well,” he said. “We have been really surprised by the level of interest but are delighted with the great reaction. We have had some great messages on social networking sites and in general it has been extremely positive. To be honest it was just what the area needed. The nearest snooker hall is The Spawell but generally there is no facility like this in the area. The last one was Jason’s.” “The idea of the club and what we intended to build from the start was a place where people felt comfortable, a club that they feel is theirs and a safe environment for children and adults alike.” There is no age limits or even a minimum age to start. Doherty himself began playing at 8 and says that the 16
During the summer the academy held a Summer Coaching Clinic with renowned Snooker coach PJ Nolan. As part of the package youngsters were entitled to a five day training academy, a coaching manual, a level-specific training program, a DVD of their training, their technique profiled, an academy certificate – signed by Ken himself, a photo with Ken and sports psychology booklets. The cost was €199 and such was the success of the course they are set to run it again. Ken said: “It went really well, the kids gained a lot from it and it is something that we will be looking at doing more regularly, perhaps in the next school break.” “We’ve seen a couple of lads through the academy, some as young as eight who look good. They had some nice cue action and with a bit of coaching and regular play they’ll improve which
is encouraging to see.” “There will be more opportunities for that too. It’s September and the schools are back so we are going to get organising more leagues and tournaments. We are in a pool league and we will be doing snooker leagues too. Members can come in as often as they want, get involved in as many tournaments as they like. The more the better,” he added. When it comes to his own career though Ken has experienced the highest of highs and some pretty painful lows. From becoming the World Champion to that missed black ball we put to him the questions on everyone’s lips. Here’s what he had to say...
17
Did you need extra motivation to qualify for tournaments once you dropped out of the top 32? I suppose I did. The motivation is always there but you feel that you have to prove yourself again. It’s very frustrating when you fall so far but you realise that you just have to graft like the rest of them and try to get back to where you feel you should be. What is your view on Barry Hearn and his role in the organisation? I think he’s done a great job. He has given the players lots of opportunities to play, to work and to make money. We had six tournaments two years ago and we have 20 this year – that’s the huge difference he’s made. He is also opening new markets in Australia, Brazil and hopefully the Middle East. I really think that himself and his team are doing a great job. How do you think snooker can compete with other sports in terms of popularity and interest? It’s definitely flagging behind other top sports like rugby, football and golf etc.. Snooker has become a little bit faux pas even though there is a record number of tournaments and you see the likes of Joe Trump coming through who is sheer talent, exciting to watch and he will bring a whole new audience to the game. Although it is still very popular as a tv programme it is not as big as it was back in the ‘80s and it never will be. It still is much-loved though, people like the closeness of the camera to the players. They like to feel like they are there and are following the player. It will make a comeback, it won’t reach the heights of before but it will be in the top 10. It’s a matter of new faces coming through. It’s a great sport that always had great support and there has been a marked improvement over the last couple of years. For all young people thinking about snooker as a profession what would your advice be? “My advice would be to get coaching.
18 01
Play in as many tournamnets as possible and never be afraid to learn. You’ll always learn from better players than you not the ones who are easy to beat. Practice all of the time, read books, watch games and remember there is no substitute for hard work. You have said before that Alex Higgins was a hero of yours, what is your favourite story about him? Alex came down one time to practice with me in the Radisson where my practice stable is. I had bought him a Guinness and he was smoking – no one else was allowed smoke in there but he was, we closed the door and he drank and smoked cigarettes he was rolling himself. Anyway he had a couple of swigs and was smoking away and he was looking at a photo of myself and himself on the wall. He loved looking at his own photos. Above the photo of us though there was one of me and Georgie Best and I pointed to it and said to him “There’s an old friend of yours Alex,’ referring to the fact that they were both from Belfast and he looked at me, then he looked at his own picture and back to the one of George and he sighed, tutted and said very loudly, “What a waste!” It was one of the funniest moments ever and it’s my favourite memory of him. You must have some great memories of winning the 1997 World Championship – is there one that sticks out in your mind? The memory of just lifting the cup in the air and kissing it was a magical moment. When I came back to Dublin with it I was held back on the plane while everyone else got off and when I did I was sent into a private area where all my family and friends were and that was a special place. It was an incredible feeling. The other memory is the open top bus through Dublin where I almost lost the cup holding it up. There were seconds to spare before I noticed the bridge and whipped it down. If I hadn’t I would have lost the cup forever.
You’re probably the only person to win a world championship with a warped cue – was that the best £2 you ever spent? It certainly was the best £2 I ever spent. I picked that cue up one day when I was a kid in Jason’s. I knew it didn’t belong to the place because I knew their cues, someone had left it behind. I asked the manger if I could have it and he said I could, for £5. I didn’t have £5 so I ran home to my mam and asked her for it. I promised to be a good boy for a long time to come and she gave it to me but on the way back I decided to chance me arm. I put £3 in my pocket and went back in to the manager and told him I could only get £2. He sucked and sighed but eventually agreed and he sold me the cue! Noone ever came back for it and I still play on it today. I have tried to get it straightened a bit over the years but I wouldn’t want the warp totally out of it. I wouldn’t be able to play with a straight one. How hard was it to see Jason’s close? It was a bit heart-breaking. I was there for 30 years and they had become almost like family. I have so many memories of it. When I was a kid I used to use a biscuit tin to play there so I could reach the table but when I started beating the older kids the tin went missing. There were tournaments there at the weekend and I started winning all around me. I was the richest kid at school - at one point I was earning more than my parents and going into school on a Monday morning with big bags of cola cubes and the like. They were good times. I’m sure you try to forget this but do you relive that missed final black ball in 2000 for the 147 break? All the time, I relive it in my nightmares. I get it all the time so it’s inevitable. It’s like people go ‘Nice to see you – how did you miss that black?’ I say ‘It was for a car and I didn’t like the colour.
Do you get over to old Trafford much these days?
SNOOKER fans are being given the opportunity to play world
I don’t get over as much as I would like. I have been on the pitch at the half time draw though and I got the chance to play there in a charity soccer match this Summer. We beat Utd 4-0 and won the cup against Liverpool. Bobby Charlton was in the stands and I doubt he was happy I scored against Utd but I hope he was impressed with my goal.
superstars at an event in the Victory Centre in Firhouse next month. The exhibition, by Ken Doherty and Steve Davis, will take place on Thursday, October 20th in an effort to raise money for the centre itself, local schools, a football team and Teenline. Frames will also be auctioned on the night allowing fans to go head to head with their heroes. Gerry Byrne, Trustee of the Victory Centre, said: “It’s set to be a fantastic night which will make a huge difference to the community.
What’s the future for you – what are your plans when you retire from snooker?
“We are delighted to be playing host to it. Ken is a friend of the Victory Centre, he comes up here often to the Riverbank restaurant for his dinner and Steve Davis is a legend with a reputation for putting on a great show.”
I’m not thinking about that now [retirement] but I always want to be involved in snooker. I love competing and travelling and I really enjoy the commentary work with the BBC. I love the sport and I would love to stay involved in some way, that’s the idea with the academy. It could be a project to bring on new talent, to nurture young blood and turn them into champions.
Over the coming weeks Ken will be paying a visit to the transition year students in Old Bawn secondary School, Firhouse Community College and St Colmchille’s secondary school in Knocklyon to explain the merits of selling tickets for the event, a percentage of which will go to that school.
Is there anything you would change? [Laughs] I wouldn’t miss that black. Ken’s snooker Academy also plays host to a Poker Club which has regular tournaments with a Monday night competition as well as a cash game on Thursday and Fridays. This month a cash league will also start, culminating in a big Christmas bonus.
Ken said: “It’s a great opportunity for students to raise money for whatever projects they feel they need it for in their school. I will come in and tell them all about the night and what they and the school will gain from it. “It will be a great night and will serve a lot of people in the local community well.” Capacity in the Victory Centre, which is almost 2 years old, is 1,100. Last year the centre held an exhibition by Jimmy White and it is off the back of its success, and a hugely successful concert by Jedward recently, that the fundraiser was planned. Gerry added: “We would really encourage people to get along to the event. It will be great fun and is a positive thing for ourselves, the schools, the Firhouse Carmel Football Club and Teenline. “It will be a very memorable exhibition too.” Tickets for the event will be €18, €10 for students and OAPS and €45 for a family of four. VIP tickets at €50 will include entry, a backstage meet and greet including a photo with the stars of the show and light refreshments. It has been four years since Bjork released her previous album ‘Volta’ and she has obviously been busy in the interim. Her new album ‘Biophilia’ was ‘partly recorded’ on an iPad and as well a standard CD release, will also be released in the form of a series of apps. When you download the free “mother” app, you gain access to 12 different apps. You are greeted with a map of a cosmos with 12 planets, one for each song/app. Biophilia will be the world’s ‘first app album’ in collaboration with Apple. Despite the scope of the project, the music has not been neglected, as showcased by the three songs that have already been leaked: first single ‘Crystalline’, ‘Cosmonogy’ and ‘Virus’. The video to ‘Crystalline’ is directed by Michel Gondry, who worked with her on some of her most memorable videos previously. Fans of Bjork will find much to enjoy in these, with her familiarly quirky vocal style and slightly unhinged approach to song composition harking back to her classic sound. Release Date: Apps Out Now, Studio Album - 23rd Sept.

Glowing Beyonce Celebrates
30th Birthday Beyonce Knowles who is pregnant with her first child, celebrated her 30th birthday in Italy with her husband Jay-Z on the 4th September. The 30-year-old American R&B recording artist was pictured enjoying a dinner date in the romantic city of Venice, with her husband of three years. This was the first time the singer was caught on camera after announcing her pregnancy at the MTV VMAs, and was looking radiant and happy as she left her hotel with her husband protectively by her side. Her baby bump could be seen underneath her maxi patterned dress, which had gold embroidered halter straps, while Jay-Z was dressed down in jeans, a white shirt and white trainers. A wax figure of the ‘Crazy in Love’ hitmaker has been placed in Madame Tussauds in Washington D.C. to commemorate her 30th birthday. Earlier this year the singer revealed her thoughts about turning 30 on ‘Piers Morgan Tonight’. “I can’t wait, because 29 is very strange. You’re still in your 20s but you feel like you’re supposed to be 30, and I feel like a woman,” the Daily Mail quoted her as saying. “I’m very aware of who I am. I feel great and I feel like 30 is the ideal age [to start a family], because you’re mature enough to know who you are and to have your boundaries and your standards, and not be afraid, too polite - but you’re young enough to be a young woman. I’m so looking forward to it,” she added.
Returning For Sequel Following the success of the first movie, which is based on the original E4 series, bosses are reportedly in the process of setting the second movie at a wedding, with the lads meeting up four years on. A source has claimed that Will (Simon Bird), Simon (Joe Thomas) and Jay (James Buckley) will reunite for Neil's (Blake Harrison) wedding and go on a stag night. Speaking to The Mirror, a production insider said: "Initially we said the characters and themes had reached a natural conclusion. But the success has been too big to ignore and it makes perfect sense to give the fans what they want. "It would be much more viable than making an extra series because the characters have moved on, so that's what we're doing. The characters have all gone off and done different things but agree to hook up for his (Neill's) stag party and wedding." The Inbetweeners Movie became the biggest live-action comedy ever in the UK earlier this month, taking in £20 million.

Adele To
Record Bond Theme Adele looks set to record the theme tune to the next Bond film. The Someone Like You singer inadvertently revealed the news on Jonathan Ross’ new ITV chat show. When asked about her next material, Adele said: “I’m going back in the studio in November. Fingers crossed.” When asked what she was working on, the Rolling In The Deep star replied: “Well, this is actually a theme, what I’ve got to do. Wow, that’s really giving something away.” Ross started to hum the James Bond theme tune as Adele realised she had let the cat out of the bag and tried to backtrack. “No, it’s a concept,” she said. “One song.” But a source later told The Sun that the 23-yearold had been asked to contribute to the next 007 film, thought to be titled Carte Blanche. “Adele has been approached to record title tracks. None have taken her fancy but when you look back at the iconic singers who have done Bond she’d be in prestigious company,” the source explained. 31
The S-Max is leading the way once again! Famous for creating the sporty MPV segment when it launched back in 2006, the seven-seater has received a host of visual and mechanical upgrades in recent years, including the first instalment of a powerful but efficient EcoBoost engine. The new EcoBoost family is a series of turbocharged petrol engines designed to produce all the performance and driving pleasure of larger units, but with a boost in both efficiency and bhp. For example, the 200bhp 2.0litre turbo engine making its debut on the 2010 S-Max produces 19 per cent less CO2, but 25 per cent more power than the old 2.3-litre naturally aspirated unit it effectively replaces. Elsewhere the S-Max is as good to drive as ever, with a solid, positive feel to all the major controls, and a supple ride that belies its talents in the corners – especially for a car this size. Styling changes are kept to a minimum presumably because the S-Max still looks so fresh even after four years in the showroom. A more strongly sculpted bonnet, bolder trapezoid grille and redesigned front bumper with LED daytime running lights on higher-spec models make up the modifications at the front. While a chrome strip surrounding the side glass area, LED taillights and a new S-Max logo embossed on the boot lid complete the changes.

It’s a similar story on the inside too, where besides the three-row fold-flat seat system coming as standard, a new one-piece panoramic roof being added to the options list and the offer of a superb new premium stereo, it’s familiar territory. But that’s no bad thing – the S-Max still retains a premium feel above its price tag, especially in our high-spec Titanium. If oil-burners are more your thing there’s a superb range of diesels to choose from too - including an improved 2.0 TDCi unit available in 160bhp tune for the first time. Despite its green credentials and impressive performance the EcoBoost engine will be a niche choice in Ireland – diesels make up over 90 per cent of S-Max sales to date. .....................................................

There's a lot to like about the Citroen Grand C4 Picasso. From its bang-upto-date looks and well-thought-out cabin design to fine diesel engines and seven seats that can be slid back and forth to vary kneeroom, the Grand Picasso is a good bet for families who need plenty of space and versatility.
There’s still a bit of boot space with all seven seats in place, and most of them can be dropped to give a huge, flat loadbay. The 1.6- and 2.0-litre engines are reasonable for economy (particularly the eHDi unit that comes with a stop/start system), but the diesel engines make more sense and will be much easier to sell on in the used market. The diesels also provide much prompter mid-rev response. The automatic gearbox has a jerky action as it moves between gears, so is best avoided. .....................................................

Next year, Nintendo will launch its much talked about Wii U console with its socalled "revolutionary" touchscreen / tablet controller. Sony's not worried. The PS Vita can do just about everything the Wii U controller can do, and you might not have to wait until next year to do so. We've done plenty of research on the PS Vita since E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo), and know that it's a slick piece of portable hardware; it can support continuous save states between it and the PS3 as well as cross-platform multiplayer in a game like WipeOut 2048, but Sony's just revealed that the PS Vita can act as a PS3 controller and display secondary information relayed to it from a PS3 too. Wait a minute, that sounds just like what the Wii U controller is. Touchscreen controller? Front-facing camera? Dual-analog sticks (CirclePads on the Wii U controller), shoulder buttons, D-Pad, four face buttons and a set of speakers? Other than the slightly larger screen, the PS Vita has everything the Wii U controller has. Some might even argue the PS Vita is better. It has an extra camera on the rear and a large touch pad on its backside. Nintendo claims it's magically resolved latency with the Wii U beaming HD video to the tablet controller and that because of the power (and price), only one controller can be supported. We'll have to wait to see how many PS Vita handhelds can be hooked up to a PS3 for this "remote" feature, but if you're going to plop down the cash for a PS Vita anyway, it's almost like you get a spare PS3 controller as a bonus.

The making a will is a very important but simple task that everybody should consider. It is extremely important to make a will as it allows a person to ensure that their families are adequately provided for and looked after upon their death. It is especially important to make a will if a person’s circumstances have changed such as if they get married, buy property or have children. It is particularly important for people with young children or children with disabilities to make a will to ensure that their children are protected and cared for after their death.
Why Should I Make A Will?
Making a will is a relatively straightforward procedure and at O’Brien Ronayne Solicitors we specialise in the area of wills and can make a will to tailor a person’s specific needs.
The rules of intestacy provide the following where a person dies without making a will
It is important to make a will for a number of reasons. Making a will allows a person to make decisions regarding the division of their assets before they die. If a person dies without making a will then they die intestate. This means that a person’s estate is divided up according to the rules of intestacy. The law on intestacy consist of strict rules which must be complied with where a person dies without making a valid will.
• Where a person dies and is survived by a husband or wife only and do not have any children / grandchildren then their husband or wife receives their entire estate. • Where a person dies and is survived by a husband or wife and children then the husband/ wife gets 2/3 of the estate and the remaining 1/3 is divided equally amongst the surviving children. • Where a person dies and is survived by their children only then their estate is divided equally between their children. • Where a person dies and does not have a husband/wife or any children then their estate is divided between their next of kin which is usually their parents. Where a person’s parents are no longer alive then their next of kin is their
38
sisters or brothers. In situations where a person’s siblings are also dead then their next of kin is their niece or nephew or their closest living relation. The rules of intestacy are very strict and in order for a person to divide up their estate as they so wish they must make a will. Making a will is a relatively simple procedure however the rules governing the drafting of wills are very strict and in order for a will to be valid the following must be in order; A person must be over 18 years of age and must be of sound mind or have mental capacity to make a will. This means that a person must understand fully what they are doing when they are making their will. The will itself must be in writing and the will must be signed by the person making the will in front of two independent witnesses. It is very important that the witnesses to the will do not benefit or receive any gift under the will otherwise the gift will fail. The rules governing the making of a will are strict and therefore it is advisable that a person obtains the assistance of a solicitor in drafting their will to ensure the will is valid. When making a will it is necessary to choose executors who will be responsible for looking after the division of your estate upon your death. Unlike witnesses the executors are free to benefit and receive gifts under your will. Most people choose two executors and these executors are responsible for ensuring that all your debts such as funeral expenses are looked after upon your death. The executors are also responsible for ensuring that your estate is divided up according to your wishes in the will.
As well as appointing executors in a will it is also possible for a person to appoint testamentary guardians under their will to look after children who are under 18 years of age. It is essential for parents of young children to make a will in order to allow them to appoint such guardians’. The testamentary guardians can be separate to the executors. In the case of young children it is necessary to make a more complicated will which involves a specific instrument known as a trust. A trust allows a person to appoint trustees to look after money on behalf of young children and to protect the children’s interests. Trusts can be put in place until children turn a particular age such as 21 years of age and allow a person to have peace of mind that their children are financially secure and looked after.
It is also important to speak to a solicitor if you have a child with a learning difficulty or disability as a specific type of trust will have to be entered into in these circumstances in order to protect your child.

The following shortcuts work in most Windows programs: Ctrl + A – Select all Ctrl + C – Copy selected item Ctrl + X – Cut selected item Ctrl + V – Paste item Ctrl + F – Find a search term within a document Ctrl + N – Creates a new document Ctrl + O – Opens a file Ctrl + P – Prints open file Ctrl + S – Saves open file The most important shortcut is probably Ctrl + Z, which undoes your last action. If you press Ctrl + Z by accident, press Ctrl + Y to undo your undo. A lot of shortcuts are quite obvious when you learn them, P for print, or S for save; so remembering them is quite easy. Even with the seemingly unrelated ones, like V for paste, once you use them a few times, you’ll soon get the hang of them. It’s worth the time saved mousing around your screen and selecting options on drop down menus to take a little time to learn your shortcuts.
What about Mac shortcuts? If you have recently made the move to using a Mac, you’ll be pleased to know that you can easily keep using the shortcuts you know (or the ones you just read) on your mac. Simply swap the Ctrl button on your PC for the Cmd button on your mac keyboard. For instance, press Cmd + Z to ‘undo’ on your mac. Also, if you are used to right clicking on an icon on a PC, you can do the same on a mac laptop by pressing Ctrl while clicking on it on a mac, to bring up a drop down menu. .....................................................

With the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks approaching many people are asking where is a good safe place to go on holiday as many resorts have been attacked over the last couple of years. Although the attacks of September 9/11 did usher in a new world order with more intensive security checks at airports and even greater travel restrictions international travel is still fairly safe. My advice to the travelling public is when choosing a holiday – think before you book. Most people choose their holiday from a glossy magazine with no thought given to their safety and security while travelling and holidaying abroad. I once booked a trip to Egypt a few years ago and as a point of interest asked the travel agent was it safe to go to Egypt after Sharm el Sheikh had been attacked by extremists and she replied ‘Oh yes it’s fine now,’ my question was then how would she have known Egypt was safe – was she a security expert I doubted it. She was just doing her job and selling holidays. You should always check with the department of Foreign Affairs or the UK foreign office websites about the countries you intend to travel to. They are an excellent source of up to date information about crime and safety in those countries. They are excellent because they have people on the ground monitoring the situation everyday. After checking these websites you can then make your own rational decisions on where to go. Most people never give any consideration to their own/families security while on holiday. When it comes to general crime remember you are travelling with extra cash, valuables and your awareness will naturally be low because you are, after all, on holiday and trying to relax.
So ask your travel rep what security arrangements are in place to protect you and your family while on holiday. If you are concerned about other terrorist attack while on holiday, especially in high risk countries, my advice to you is this. Find the busiest nightclubs, venues and locations where lots of other tourists gather, identify them at the start of your holiday and avoid them for the rest of your holiday. I’m saying still have fun but just be aware. When it comes to securing airports, rail stations and other critical infrastructure locations, Government departments and corporate security structures really need to introduce multi-deterrance layers as part of their security counter measures while protecting the travelling public. According to Stephen G Bailey, Senior Consultant with I.K.9 Security Ponterfract, West Yorkshire, UK “Organisations and installations must give the travelling public maximum protection to instill confidence in various modes of travel. They need to integrate professional dog teams as part of their deterrence package. A well-trained dog and handler acts as a real force multiplier in deterring and defeating the criminal and terrorist alike. (Stephen G Bailey, 2011). Always remember when travelling abroad don’t forget to secure your own home properly and get your family or friends to check periodically. .....................................................

InTallaght magazine welcomes back Joanna Kenna, now director of her own company, Anjels Professional Makeup Artists, to bring you her monthly makeup feature. Perfectly applied lipstick can add the finishing touch to your look and here are some tips on how to achieve the best results. ..........................................................................................................
Sometimes a perfect red lipstick is all you need to achieve your ‘smoking hot’ look. Joanna Kenna, our fully trained MAC makeup artist will advise you and give you her step by step outline to achieve picture perfect lips.
Preparing your lips Like your skin, your lips need to be conditioned and smooth so that your lipstick will last longer and look fresh.
1. 2.
If lips appear flaky and dry, then a lip exfoliator can be used to ensure lips are smooth and soft. Then a lip conditioner can be applied and allowed to soak in, to ensure lips are moisturised and silky. Ensure lip conditioner is thoroughly blotted away before applying lipstick.

Apply a lip primer on the entire mouth and slightly outside the natural lip line. Joanna uses MAC Prep + Prime: ‘It’s great to help hold your lipstick on.’ Apply a concealer to tone down the lip colour or alternately your foundation or face power. This will guarantee the true colour of the lipstick will be visible on your lips. Use a finely sharpened red lip pencil to create a clean and structured edge (Joanna recommends using short soft strokes, working inward from the outer

corner of your lip). When you’re finished the lips should look even and symmetrical. The lip liner can also be used to fill in the entire lip before layering the lipstick, this will ensure the colour is strong and will be long lasting. (Joanna’s favourite products are MAC Cosmetic Red lip line for a bright bold colour and Brick lip line for a rich deeper tone) Apply a complementary red lipstick. Matte colours have longer lasting power with a full bodied colour but if you want a more creamy finish use Amplified Crème and Lustre lipsticks. If you want to have a picture perfect finish you can use a small firm angle or flat brush loaded with concealer and carefully clean up around the edges to make certain your sexy pout is flawless. Brushes are also an excellent tool to use when applying lip products. (Joanna says MAC brushes 194, 231, 228 and 311 are easy to work with)

This week I’m looking at Lara Boutique in the city centre. In particular we’ll be looking at debswear and how to look special on that big night. If you want something short or long, backless, or in different shapes, sizes and colours then this is the place for you. Lara stock dresses in UK Sizes 4 - 28 to accomodate everyone. The owner Lara, manager Ciara and all the staff are very helpful in making sure you get something you feel good in. This week I’ve picked out a short backless sequined dress, as I feel people now tend to mix it up for the debs, instead of sticking strictly to the old classics. I’m also looking at a long sequined gown as I feel this could work just as well. There are tonnes of dresses to choose from; they have Jovani dresses that are exclusive to Lara. Celebs like Katie Price, Michelle Heaton, Rosanna Davison, Stacey Soloman, The Saturdays and Miss Irelands have all donned this
fashionable label, and this is where you can get the look right here in Dublin. You can check out their website at www.larasfashion.com When choosing your perfect outfit for the debs, it’s really about finding something to express your own individual style. My advice would to go for a colour you know looks well on you, and a cut that flatters your body shape as well as being glamourous and comfortable because you will be in your dress for a good few hours. When it comes to accessories, I’d say if your dress is very OTT, then don’t wear a lot of jewellery, as it will take away from the dress. If you’re wearing a 50s style debs dress, I’d pair it with classic pearls. If you’re wearing sequins, I’d recommend diamonds. I think that clutch bags complement all styles of dresses, but make sure it’s big enough to fit all your essentials. Well, until next time fashion readers; remember clothes don’t wear you, it’s how you wear the clothes.

Hi InTallaght readers, hope you enjoyed my article last month on “Chest” and some of you benefitted from it. As promised this month I’ll be looking at cardio(cardiovascular exercise). I’m going to keep it simple this month and start with walking, minimal equipment and costs nothing, well apart from a good pair of runners which I’ll be talking about later. So we are going to look at the Aerobic phase of Cardiovascular exercise. Aerobic meaning “with oxygen/air”. Aerobic exercise is physical exercise of relatively low intensity and long duration. Not too long though. What are the benefits of walking?? I’m not going to complicate things. The short of it is that it improves over all fitness and burns body fat. It is also a good way to relax and de-stress. It helps tone the lower body as all the major muscle groups are used. Glutes(bum), Quads(front of legs), Hamstrings(back of legs) and Calves. People often ask me how long should they walk for?? This depends on fitness levels, while one person could walk for an hour another person might struggle with this. Anywhere between 30-45 mins is plenty. You must make sure it’s a brisk walk, push yourself and pace otherwise it will be “a stroll” and the benefits and results won’t be as good. Like anything you do, what you put in is what you get out. I recommend walking 2-3 times per week. As it says in my profile I am also a self defence instructor. Why am I telling you this?? Well as the bright evenings are disappearing this means a lot of you will be walking when it’s getting dark. I would recommend a few simple points, walk with a friend, not only can the two of you motivate each other but two sets of eyes and ears are better than one. I would also recommend not walking with your iPod in. You cannot hear anything around you and as you have no eyes in the back of your head you won’t have a clue if anyone is there. No harm in glancing behind you every now and again. Without your iPod in at least you can hear if someone is coming up behind you. Try stick to areas you know and also walking along beside major roads where there is traffic and people traffic. Make sure a loved one, whether it be a family member, friend, or partner knows your route and how long you’ll be. Just stay safe. If anyone has any questions on this article or on fitness and/or self defence in general don’t hesitate to contact me, as advice is free. Peace Matt

Candace Bushnell’s name might well be familiar to you. She wrote the original novel Sex and the City in 1996, which spawned the hit TV show, running for 6 seasons and leading to two feature films. SATC was a much loved cultural phenomenon and many were sad to see it come to a close. I’m not usually a fan of ‘chick lit’, but having thoroughly enjoyed SATC (on TV anyway, if not on the big screen), when I saw the eye catchingly stylish cover of One Fifth Avenue in a bookshop, I was intrigued to see what else Bushnell was capable of and decided to give it a try. Bushnell’s fifth novel, One Fifth Avenue is a modern day story of old and new money, which is always a combustible mix. In an Art Deco building in one of Manhattan’s oldest and most hip neighborhoods, a conclave of fictional Manhattanites reside; they are a mix of old and new money, a power-hungry and socially eager group that will do almost anything to
maintain their residences – and hence, their social positions – in this piece of real estate that represents so much more to each of them. Thus begins the tale of One Fifth Avenue.
One Fifth Avenue differs greatly in structure to SATC. The characters are not best friends, their only links are because they live in, or know someone who lives in this apartment building. There are a lot of characters, which can be a bit confusing at times, but I am always a fan of a novel that has many disparate strands, that eventually weave into a satisfyingly connected plot. It is a novel about the thirst for power, for social prominence, and for marriages that are successful — at least to the public eye. “Here are bloggers and bullies, misfits and misanthropes, dear hearts and black hearts, dogfights and catty squalls spun into a darkly humorous chicklit saga,” says Publisher’s Weekly.
It is a light and airy read, that is filled with a sense of wit and even laughs at itself from time to time. While I hesitate to say it is a brilliant book, I did enjoy it quite a lot. I got sucked into the personal little dramas of the characters and wanted to see how it would all turn out. Despite not attempting to replicate the SATC formula, of the trials and tribulations of a group of girl friends in NYC like her other novel, Lipstick Jungle, it shares a certain approach with the two. Fans of SATC will revel in the similarities but I actually enjoyed the plot device of being based around a more varied cast of characters
Candace Bushnell is the critically acclaimed, international best-selling novelist whose first book, Sex and the City, was the basis for the HBO hit series and subsequent blockbuster movies. Through her books and television series, Bushnell’s work has influenced and defined two generations of women. She is the winner of the 2006 Matrix Award for books (other winners include Joan Didion and Amy Tan), and a recipient of the Albert Einstein Spirit of Achievement Award. She currently resides in Manhattan. For more information visit her website at

As some of you might have already seen in the media, our Kelly is soon to become a TV star! Understandably she’s been too busy since TV3’s big announcement on the 18th of August, to write her column for us this month. Instead, we just wanted to let you all know what she’ll be up to for the next while. As part of TV3’s Autumn Schedule Launch, it was announced that following on from the success of TV shows like Geordie Shore and The Only Way Is Essex in the UK, Irish TV is to get its own slice of the reality TV pie with their new show, Tallafornia.
48
Everything is still very hush hush but TV3 have given us this description of the concept: Four hot West Dublin boys and four fabulous West Dublin girls spend four weeks living, eating, sleeping, working and partying together – and TV3 cameras will be there to catch all of the action. We see how these Tallaght natives let nothing stop them from looking great and having the time of their lives. We look at the phenomenon that is Tallafornia: the people, the places, the hairspray, the buff bodies and the golden orange skin tones.
ORGANIC GARDEN PEST CONTROL 1 head of garlic 1 tablespoon dishwashing liquid 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 2 cups water Peel the garlic cloves and puree the cloves oil and water. Allow to stand over night and then strain the mixture. Add the dishwashing liquid and mix thoroughly. Pour into a spray bottle and use on infected plants.
BLACK SPOT ON ROSES Mix fat-free milk with water in a 50/50 ratio and apply it using a spray bottle. Spray the mix directly onto the leaves of your roses. The milk-and-water solution coats the leaves and leads to the growth of an invisible fungus that helps to kill black spot.
GENERAL MAINTENANCE Rake up leaves, twigs and fruit from apple trees and dispose of them to help control apple scab disease. Continue to pick fresh flowers for indoors. This will also help encourage more blooms on most perennials. Gladioli and Tuberous begonias are normally past their best by the end of
September, before the frost comes they should be dug up and stored inside in a dark frost-free area. After lifting they should be dusted with a suitable fungicide to prevent rotting. Also make sure that they are completely dry before storage. Dahlias should also get the same treatment but not until the first autumn frost has killed off some the foliage, this dries off the stems at soil level and prepares the tuber for winter; dahlias are slightly hardier than begonias and gladioli, all of the above can be stored in dry boxes with one inch of dry peat on top until spring and then started of again in spring.
ROSES Climbing roses can be pruned once they have finished flowering Do not prune azaleas, rhododendrons and other spring flowering shrubs because they have already set their buds for next year's blooms. Pruning now will sacrifice next spring’s flowers. .....................................................

Plant winter pansy’s violas Bachelor's Buttons, primulas, Forget-me-nots, wallflowers, ornamental cabbage and sweet alyssum now for earlier blooms next year. It is also the time of year to plant spring flower bulbs like crocuses, daffodils, narcissi and snowdrops in borders and patio pots. Do not to grow wallflowers and ornamental cabbages in the same spot two years running; as they are brassicas (cabbage family) and need rotation to avoid the root disease called 'clubfoot', which can be infectious and can persists in the soil for a long time.

Shamrock Rovers will continue making history this month when they become the first Irish team to play in the Europa League Group Stages. The Hoops beat Partizan Belgrade 3-2 on aggregate in the Play Off round, to progress to the next stage of the prestigious European competition. And Rovers were rewarded that victory by being drawn in a group with Tottenham Hotspur, PAOK of Greece and Rubin Kazan of Russia. Rovers will play home and away games against the three sides. The campaign will kick-off with a home game against Rubin Kazan on September 15, following that the Hoops travel to London to take on Tottenham at Whiteheart Lane on September 29. The rest of the games will take place throughout October, November and December. Of course the Hoops will also continue to challenge to retain their Airtricity League title throughout September. Rovers will take on fellow title-challegners, Sligo Rovers at Tallaght Stadium on Friday, September 9, and will then travel to Richmond Park for a tie against St Patrick’s Athletic on September 12. 52
Ties against Derry City and Drogheda United will complete the month’s campaigning in the league. It’s a huge month for the Hoops – make sure you’re there to play your part! .......................................................

Signed for the Hoops during the transfer window of July 2009 and, as it turned out, proved to be a pretty shrewd move considering what since became of his then club Cork City. Dublin born Paddy is a sturdy defensive player who also revels in midfield. His previous clubs are Shamrock Rovers (Schoolboys), UCD, Drogheda United, Longford and Cork City. Missed almost all of 2010 through injury. But has had a great 2011 so far, and scored a cracking goal against FK Partizan in the Europa League.

FOR 74 years St Anne’s GAA club in Bohernabreena has been doing the area proud and 2011 has stayed true to form with teams of all ages scooping accolades. This year the Under 14 Boys won Feile in Division Three while the Under 8s Hurling team won a recent tournament against Round Towers. As well as that the Junior nines (Men’s team) won The Sheridan Cup in Balgriffin in August.
Club History Founded in 1937, the club’s catchment area stretched the length of the picturesque Dodder Valley, from Old Bawn right up to Castlekelly. The idea of setting up a Gaelic football club in the area was first mooted by Fr. George Henry, the then catholic curate in the Bohernabreena parish. He encouraged and urged men such as, Albert West, Sonny Reilly, and Barney Kilbride to put the idea into motion. They duly took his advice on board, and they arranged a meeting which was held at Callaghans Bridge, (near the entrance to the Waterworks). At that historical first meeting an Ad Hoc Committee was formed; it was also decided to name the club St. Anne’s, and that its colours would be blue and white. Back in 1936/37, sixpence a week was a lot of money, but that was the contribution paid in by everyone interested in setting up a Gaelic club in the area. The next couple of years were mainly devoted to fundraising, organising for the future, and of course playing the odd friendly or tournament game. On June 10th 1937 at their inaugural general meeting the following committee was elected; Chairman; Albert West; Vice Chairman; Mick
01 60
Keenan; Secretary; Tom Bagnall; Assistant Secretary; Jim Norton; Treasurer; Barney Kilbride; Committee Members; Jim Bagnall, Andy Devine, Tommy Mahon, Jimmy Maher, Tommy Keogh, Sonny Reilly, Gerry Doyle, and Willie Byrne. It was decided to affiliate to the Dublin Junior football board, and accordingly a “C” team was entered for competition, and so on that date St. Anne’s G.A.A club was founded, thereby writing a large paragraph of the local history book. Around the same time Beasleys estate in Bohernabreena was being divided by the Land Commision, so the club’s committee applied for a playing pitch. Their application was successful, and it has been home to St. Anne’s since March 3rd 1938. The committee meetings were first held in Bagnalls hut, but when Albert West built a new house in Bohernabreena, all meetings, raffles, etc. took place there, and it was generally regarded as the clubs headquarters for the next two years or so. Early in 1939, the committee decided to build a dressing room / meeting room, the tender submitted by Jimmy Maher for the sum of £280 was accepted, and the first building or pavilion as it was more commonly known, was erected. In April 1939 the club opened its first bank account with the princely sum of £220. Today the club has many teams including the ladies which range from under 10s to seniors. The championship started at the end of August for the ladies who won their first game against O’Dwyers Balbriggan.
St Anne’s also boast strong links to the Dublin team with Dublin Minor team player Scott Fulham a club member. Scott is a corner forward on the minor and senior teams at St Anne’s and has high hopes for the future. Alan ‘Nipper’ McNally who is the Senior Manager of the Men’s team is also the Vice chairman of the club and a selector for the Dublin Minors. Games promotion officer Lee Moroney: “Our club is developing at a very fast rate. Particularly among the juvenile footballers. There is a huge amount of work going into hurling and the rejuvination of the camogie section particularly with the ‘giggling girls’ who range in age from five to ten. “What we are trying to do is generate interest from a young age. Our numbers continue to grow and we have great aspirations for years to come.” He added: “Everybody is welcome to join and we are seeing a lot more interest. People are not going to gyms because they are not doing many money-based activities and our membership fee is very small compared to a lot of things.”

According to Linda Harborn Club PRO St Anne’s, despite falling victim to the recession like so many others, St Anne’s is fighting back. She said: “The club is progressing and we are working on our entertainment. We had Wolf Tones play here, Bernie Stokes the medium also came for a night and every Saturday we have live music in the bar which is free to everyone. “We used to be booked out with parties but the recession has seen most of them off so we just do our best to come up with other ways to fundraise and it seems to be working.” One novel idea for ensuring the club keeps growing is the football nursery which is held on a Saturday morning for four to six-year-olds. It’s a feeder for the under eights teams. Linda said: “It’s a novel idea and we try to include parents too if they want to come along and get involved.” This month there is music in the bar by Mick Carroll, Ian Byrne and Angel. Finian Folk, a ballad band will also be back on October 1 and that gig is free. As well as football, hurling and camogie teams St Anne’s also has men and women’s darts teams as well as golf and a ladies pitch&putt team.
