AN exciting showcase will take place in Tallaght on December 3rd when the county Christmas tree comes to life and the holiday season officially begins. ‘Unwrapped,’ will be a multi-arts performance involving professional artists and community groups and will take place between Tallaght Library, Chamber Square, The Civic Theatre and Rua Red. The event, which is a creative partnership between South Dublin County Council Arts Office and Corporate Services Department, South Dublin Libraries, Tallaght Community Arts, Alternative Entertainment, Contact Studio, the Civic Theatre, RUA RED, South Dublin Arts Centre and the South Dublin Music Education Partnership, takes its theme from the battle between the Holly and Oak King. In many Celtic-based traditions the cycle of their clash signifies the turning of the seasons from the Winter to the Summer Solstice. It’s a story that has inspired many of the Christmas and winter traditions we celebrate today and promises to make for an aweinspiring afternoon. Tony Fegan, Director of Tallaght Community Arts said: “We held a similar event last year but the weather was against us. We soldiered on though and it was fantastic but we are hoping that the weather plays ball this year and we get to perform outside as planned. “It’s a fantastic and very positive few hours where many groups come together in celebration. It tells a story while also bringing the tree to life and signalling the start of a very happy time of the year. “We are hoping for a fantastic turnout,” he added. 06

Unwrapped features original music and artwork as well as the lighting of the tree. There will be performances from the Armagh Rhymers, Habemus Choir, St. Kilian’s Church Choir, St. Mark’s Church Choir, Suburban Sounds Choir, art work from Killian Redmond, writing from Sue Hasset, original music by Gerry Horan and Michael Fleming and costumes by Tadashi Kato. The lantern and doorway design will be by Sláinne Linnane and living tableaux will be by Jennifer Webster with members of Tallaght Young Filmmakers. The event will run from 3.45-6pm closing with a reception and refreshments along with traditional music performances in RUA RED’s foyer. Global jewellery brand Pandora took over the unit on the second floor in November and business, in the run-up to Christmas, has been booming.

THE biggest Pandora store in Dublin has opened its doors in the Square.

The ‘Concept store’ which owes its roots to Denmark, offers the full range of Pandora’s stunning hand-finished collection of elegant and versatile jewellery design including the everpopular charm bracelet Moments as well as Ring Upon Ring, Compose, Liquid Silver and the Black Crown Diamond Watch Collection. A spokesperson for Pandora said: “We are thrilled to open up a new shop in the Square in Tallaght. The centre is a vibrant shopping district in the heart of South West Dublin and the employ-

ment and business the new store brings to the community has been warmly welcomed.” Pandora is well-known around the world for its unique, customized charm bracelets that come with a selection of hand-finished sterling silver and 14K gold charms as well as its other delicately crafted and genuine jewellery collections. The aim of the products is to “embody an inspiring universe of contemporary design, based upon a carefully chosen selection of 14 and 18 carat solid gold and genuine sterling silver”. The new store in Tallaght is one of several store openings for Pandora planned for late 2011.

disappointed at the further delay but is positive about the effect the return will have on the local economy. He said: “I welcome the commencement of work on the refurbishment of the existing cinema and the installation of its fully digitalized screens and stadium-style seating. “I regret that the original cinema closed and that it has taken this long to reopen though.

THE return of the cinema to the Square has been hit with further delays after previous promises that it would be back up and running by this Christmas have been broken.

“At the moment all we can do is confirm that it will have 12 digital cinema screens but so far as employment and what it might offer we can’t say anything for definite yet.”

IMC cinemas has confirmed that the 12-digital screen complex will open by next Spring and work inside the venue is ongoing.

The UCI cinema closed in Tallaght in March 2010 with the loss of over 50 jobs. Over the next year there was regular talk of IMC reopening in its place and earlier this year it was said that it would be re-opened for Christmas.

A spokesperson said: “It has been delayed slightly again but we are expecting to be open by early Spring. 08

Labour TD Eamonn Maloney said he is

“It is wrong that for the past year and a half parents have had to drive their children out of Tallaght to another cinema then go and collect them later on.” He added: “The cinema is very important to the life of the Square and the social life of the people of Tallaght. I hope that this time when they say that it is set for opening in March that it will finally happen.” A planning application was also passed last year for a new 14-screen cinema complex at Belgard Square East on the former Woodies site.

A MAGICAL children’s book by Firhouse author Jason Conway is set to capture the imagination of young and old alike. The Gikkie Bokkers is the tale of Hugo Muckbucket and his discovery of the never-before-heard-of mythical creatures hiding out in Wexford. It’s a story of great imagination and imagery but more that that it’s also a tale of discovery and learning. Jason explained: “It’s all about insurmountable objects, overcoming fears and learning not to fight hate with hate and negativity with negativity. The main character is a rich man with plenty of years behind him but he acts like a child. His journey into a world of the unknown will teach him to be responsible and accountable for his own actions despite being an adult and so there is much for everyone of all

BUDDING singers and songwriters are being invited to a new club which aims at bringing artists, and their talents, together. The Songwriter Club, which was set up by Ballyfermot DJ Keith Mc Loughlin and singer/songwriter Sinead McNally, had its first meeting in The Village on Wexford Street in October. The aim of the club is to provide a platform where artists can share their problems within the industry, give each other advice and in the future perhaps collaborate whether through singing, playing or writing. Keith told InTallaght: “It came about when a group of us were chatting about various things in the industry on Facebook. One person said to another wouldn’t it be nice to have a club to sit

ages to learn. It should appeal to anyone from the age of seven up.” Packed full of mystery and intrique the story will see Hugo Muckbucket in search of the ‘next big thing.’ Based in a mansion in Dublin he decides to go back to his Wexford roots where he enters a pub he was banned from entering, by his father, as a child. Inside he meets a Seanog whose tales of magical creatures hiding out in the wiles of Wexford intrigue him so much he sets off on ‘one last big adventure’. Jason, who is a designer by trade and who also illustrated the book, said: “I came from a humble background and much of my childhood I got through with fairytales, a world I could get lost in. I’ve always had a love of mystery and magic and this book has been the perfect outlet for me to share a whole new world with other people.

down and talk about this stuff in person and I said I’d set it up. I was half joking at first but then there was such interest in the idea that we went ahead and did it. We had 11 at the first meeting which was fantastic.”

Inspiration for the series came from the tales Jason’s partner’s father who used to tell his children about the ‘Gikkie Bokkers’ to keep them amused on the way down to Wexford as a child. He said: “The book is dedicated to John Haverty who told the stories and to Nicola – they both deserve that.” Already working on the second book Jason is self-publishing at the moment but looking for a book deal. A PDF version of the book is available online at www.gikkiebokkers.com and an audio version is planned post-Christmas.

idea is that we can cater for everybody for free.” For more on The Songwriter Club contact Keith on keitho89@hotmail.com or Sinead on mcnallysinead@hotmail.com

The next meeting of the club is on January 21st. The time and place have yet to be confirmed but with 50 ‘likes’ on the Facebook events page ‘Songwriters Club’ already Keith is hopeful that it will really take off. He said: “We are hoping to eventually get guest speakers in and to really learn from them and from each other. We all have different interests in the business, mine is through radio, Sinead’s is through her music so you never know where we will go with it. “There are other groups out there but they charge 50euro membership. DOMESTIC violence is a devastating reality for many women and the festive season can often be a source of fear with drink and stress escalating already volatile situations. Saoirse Women’s Refuge in Tallaght, which celebrates five years this month, will be on hand however to support victims and their families with everything from advice and temporary accommodation to a new place to live. The centre, which is at an undisclosed location in an effort to protect those availing of its services, catered for almost 100 families, including 230 children, last year and despite its continued success is again facing cuts in the new year. Centre Manager Allison Graham told InTallaght: “When we started there were quiet times and it was off and on when it came to busy-ness. Last year, however, we had five families and one family even came in on St Stephen’s day. This year we are expecting to be full.” The complex has six apartments altogether. They are all one-bedroom but are kitted out with bunk beds and sofa beds so there is room if a woman turns up with five children. The accommodation required can vary with each family having their own situation. Allison said: “That’s not ideal as we are a crisis centre and therefore the idea is that they come in, in an emergency type of a scenario, for a couple of nights but if needs be they can stay. Most people move on after a while though. Some go home, some to private rented accommodation some to social housing and some home. “A lot of families come in where the wife wasn’t allowed to work or pursue an education. A lot would be used to being a stay at home mothers so when they come to us they 10

are not used to budgeting and managing and that’s very daunting so they are assigned a care-worker who helps with plans moving forward. She added: “We would give them emergency food and a change of clothes and then we would link them in with a community welfare officer. Down the road we might try and sort them out with rent allowance and social housing etc.” Saoirse’s annual report 2010 is the last full year of figures. In that year the refuge had 99 families stay including 230 children. In addition the centre runs an outreach service where staff from the refuge go out to those in distress. 90 odd families were looked after through this service in 2010 when there were also 2,000 calls to the helpline. Allison said: “The figures have been consistent over the year. The first full year we had was in 2007 when we took in 108 families. The reason that figure is slightly down is that we have more options now than we did then. We can try and find housing, despite its difficulties, and we can offer our outreach workers. “The number of families being turned away has definitely increased since 2007. That year we had to turn away 124 families and 2011 is going to exceed that with 315 already turned away this year.”

The team of people at Saoirse have remained almost exactly as it was from the start. All are fully qualified social care workers, psycotherapists or councilors and all avail of regular in-house training. Alison said: “We’d like to acknowledge all the families who have come through our doors. Hopefully we’ll have another five years of making a difference.” It costs approximately 1 million euro per year to run the refuge with the main sponsors being the HSE and South Dublin County Council. The centre has fallen victim, however, to cuts over the last few yearsbut despite this it is braced for the festive period as according to Allison domestic violence does ‘not stop for the holidays.’ She added: “Contact us if you have any sense that you are being treated disrespectfully or in an abusive way. Don’t feel that you are here to put up with it. It might be a difficult road but we will help you through it.” For help or more information contact Saoirse’s 24-hr helpline on 01 4630000 or log onto www.saoirsewomensrefuge.ie. The helpine is completely confidential and any return calls will appear as a blocked number.

link in with other organisations – to strengthen the support network and work towards stopping it.”

IN the Tallaght area alone there is an average of two suicides per week according to the Unmarried and Seperated Families of Ireland (USFI) Director Ray Kelly whose latest drive is to decrease the risk by bringing charities together. The non-profit organisation, which was founded 18 years ago by Mr Kelly, was originally geared towards separated fathers and their rights to access their children but has since grown and is now all-encompassing when it comes to troubles in the home. The success of this expansion has led therefre to a widening of its operational circle and this Christmas the USFI is calling on more charities to link in with it for the better of its members. On Sunday December the 16th the USFI will hold its annual awareness day when it will come together with likeminded charities to raise the profile of suicide awareness, depression and all related factors. At 10am that morning the group will meet at the Liffey Boardwalk where it will release a wreath of remembrance for those who have died at their own hands and the invitation has gone out to other like-minded charities to attend. Ray said: “We used to do the sea of Santas but this year we’ve changed it up and the idea is to let people know that these victims may be out of sight but they are certainly not out of mind.”

Ray told InTallaght: “Nothing ever happens in isolation - suicides, broken homes or depression. There are connecting factors when something happens in a home and while we try to deal with as many issues as possible there are other charities which are fixed on some of the things specifically like ones that are focused on suicide or on homelessness or depression and we are reaching out to them to link in, in a show of solidarity and togetherness.” Almost two decades after setting the USFI up Ray said that rather than the recession causing an increase in broken marriages and homes the number is leveling off because people have been left with no choice but to stay together. He said: “These days people can’t separate and in one way this can be looked at as positive as it may encourage more people to work at it but in most cases it is not healthy and we are here to help them through it. If people are unhappy living together it can lead to suicide, domestic violence and depression – we focus on how to deal with that. “In the Tallaght area alone there is an average of two people a week killing themselves and that’s why we want to

He added: “The youngest person I’ve ever come across who attempted suicide was 8 years old and that was deeply disturbing. “We have to ask ourselves where is this coming from? Where do they get the ideas from? What’s happening at home and how are they affected? We teach people to look, listen and become more aware – and our services are open to everyone.” There are counsellors available at USFI to speak to couples or individuals. This includes five psychotherapists, two mediators and one child psychotherapist. The USFI gets no funding from the government and is completely reliant on members to keep it in operation. Both unemployed and employed members pay a contribution with those out of work giving €10 per month and those in work giving €21 per month. Generous with their time the counsellors, who can earn anything up to €95 per session elsewhere accept anything between €10 and €30 per session from members of USFI. The charity also holds regular fundraisers and on February 18th an ‘Over 30’s Debs’ will be held in the Louis Fitzgerald hotel at Newlands Cross. Entry will be €50 per ticket and can be purchased by calling 01 451 4200 or emailing info@usfi.ie.

Across Ireland on that same day a similar event will be held, by USFI members, in every major city where at the same time a wreath will be lowered into the water wherever the group gathers.

Karl Swaine was born a healthy baby in April 2007 but in September 2009 his parents’ world was turned upside down when he was diagnosed with a rare metabolic condition called Hunter Syndrome (MPS II). A child born with this condition develops normally until about 18 months when there could be a change in their behaviour. The child could be prone to chest, ear and upper airway infections. This however did not apply to Karl. For the Swaine family from Lucan they have a hernia to thank for their little boy’s early diagnosis in 2009 - a diagnosis which has made a huge difference to both the quality and length of his life. It all started one evening in February 2009 when mother, Sharon, and Dad, Howard, noticed that Karl was displaying an outward bellybutton which he didn’t have before. They brought him to Tallaght Hospital where he was x-rayed and tested for a hernia. However the doctor treating him also happened to comment on Karl’s head being quite large for his age (it actually turned out to be normal for his height and weight) and he was referred to a paediatrician. This doctor was to change the family’s lives forever. Sharon told InTallaght: “Karl was slow to walk when he was a baby and when he eventually did at 19 months he was walking on his tippy toes, which is a sign but we didn’t know that at the time. Then in February 2009 he got the hernia and we brought him in. The doctor made the comment about his head and referred him to the paediatrician who took one look at him and said she suspected he had Hunter’s. “We didn’t have a clue what Hunter's was. My brother, Dessie, who died at 12

the age of 11, was diagnosed with Hurler’s Syndrome (MPS I) but we now know that Dessie actually had Hunter Syndrome. We were devastated. “The more time that went on, however, the more we learned about it and the more we realised that we were in fact luckier than most. Thankfully, the paediatrician in Tallaght Hospital just happened to be an expert in metabolic disorders, which is what Hunter’s is, and she was so sure he had it that she lined up every test possible before she confirmed it. Once the diagnosis was confirmed, Karl was transferred to Temple Street Hospital. Hunter Syndrome sufferers are missing or deficient in an enzyme which breaks down sugars known as Mucopolysaccharides. Without this enzyme these sugars store and build up in the body causing damage to the major organs, joints, muscles and soft tissues and in severe cases the central nervous system. This is a progressive and degenerative condition with no cure (at present). There is, however, Enzyme Replacement Treatment (ERT) which Karl has been going to Temple Street for every week for the past couple of years. This is a 3-hour procedure where the missing enzyme replacement is fed into his system and he will require this for the rest of his life. The treatment will slow down the diseases progression and has so far proved enormously successful. Because the condition affects every part of the body, Karl also attends various clinics in Temple Street as an out-patient. Howard said: “The worst thing that we did when we found out was read up on the internet about Hunter’s. We didn’t know where to

turn, we were frightened and confused especially with Sharon’s brother’s history but we were really taken care of in Tallaght and Temple Street and even though we understand the disease now and we know that there is no cure there have been many advances and Karl was diagnosed very early so we are very positive.” Just recently Karl’s ERT has been moved to his home where a nurse now comes out to treat him and the pressure is off a little bit on the family. They have also recently travelled to Manchester to meet Professor Wraith, an expert in MPS conditions, who told Sharon and Howard that the disease has not affected Karl’s brain and that there is hope for him for a normal life. Some cases are left undiagnosed until a child is seven or eight in which time the degeneration has had years to set in. Children with Hunter’s can display rather large heads, broad noses and short necks and if left undiagnosed it can severely affect the brain. There are only approximately 2,000 known cases of Hunters in the world and Karl is just one of 10 children in Ireland with it. It mostly affects boys and is passed on through a gene in the mother. Treatment is progressing but the best that can be hoped for at the moment, in general, is a slowing down of the progression.

dad, after Santa brings him the drum kit he longs for this Christmas. Howard said: “Karl has been through so much but he is a fighter and we are immensely proud of him. He takes the ERT in his stride. In February 2010 he had three hernias repaired and in July 2010 he had his adenoids & tonsils removed, grommets inserted in his ears and Botox injected into his legs to relax the muscles. He is just unbelievable.” Sharon added: “When we see other kids and how the condition has affected them we know that we are really lucky. Karl is a lovely child. Everyone who knows him loves him and he is so positive and happy all of the time. He is the first Hunter’s child in the Republic of Ireland to get home infusions and we hope that he will continue to progress. We hope that he will break the mould and become a force to be reckoned with.” Karl will feature on the Temple Street series on TV3 (which is running at the moment on Monday nights) on December 5th at 8pm where the family speaks about there experiences in the hope that it will make others aware. They will also appear on Ireland AM that morning. For more information on Hunter Syndrome and the other MPS conditions log onto www.mpssociety.ie.

Karl however is flying. He attends Scoil Mochua in Clondalkin where he is in his second year of playschool. He is learning to read and has regular physiotherapy and speech & language therapy. Next September he is hoping to attend Lucan Educate Together by which time he may well also be a drummer, like his

THEY’RE cute and they’re cuddly, they are loyal and they are loveable but as the old adage goes – a pet is for life not just for Christmas. Still though, despite knowing this hundreds of people every year buy all kinds of animals without really considering the long-term commitment. And there isn’t any cuter a gift than a little puppy with soulful eyes or a tiny Gerbil with the softest of coats so long as you are prepared to love it, feed it, walk it and pick up its poo - as long as you both shall live. The key to a successful pet purchase, according to Tallaght and Clondalkin Pet Store owner Des Scanlon is research. Des told InTallaght: “ The most important thing to do before you part with your money is to look into it fully. Animals can be the most delightful present so long as a person is prepared. “To do that you just have to ask yourself some simple questions. Take a look at your home, have you a big enough garden or space inside for your chosen pet? Look at your lifestyle – are you at home enough to look after your pet, to walk them and keep them company? Look at your finances – is it within your budget to care for this animal food-wise and with vet’s bills? He added: “The last thing you want is to realize you shouldn’t have taken on the responsibility and the animal suffers.” With 18 years in the pet business under his belt Des is a mind of information when it comes to choosing pets and while the store doesn’t sell dogs or cats he is always on hand to give advice on everything from choosing your pet and breeds to housing necessities and even which pets best suit those customers with allergies. He said: “The early months 14

of the new year are notorious for people eturning pets or even just dumping them because they are no longer capable or willing to look after the animal so all we ask is that you think and make the decision knowing that you are not going to go down that road.

First of all we invite people to chat to us about what type they are looking at and we discuss what that particular animal needs. There is a worrying growth in animal farms where dogs are bred in huge quantities and sold off in bulk and we like to ensure that these places are avoided at all costs.

“If a parent is looking to buy a pet for their child for Christmas we have a range of smaller pets which are great for starting out and teaching children the responsibility of a pet. “Some great ones for this are hamsters and gerbils. They don’t require walking or grooming but they are great company and fun for children to play with. He added: “Unlike dogs and cats too they don’t require huge amounts of company and so, alongside fish can be a dream to look after.”

“We recommend that people go to the DSPCA or fully research suppliers of fully bred animals – we can point people in the right direction. For example we see so many people in here who chose the runt of the litter when they were buying their dog because they felt sorry for it but had they come in to us first we would have advised them to do the exact opposite.

Those interested in buying puppies or fully-grown dogs and cats can also receive advice from Des and his team. Despite not selling the animals the shop is kitted out with kennels and accessories and advice is plentiful. Des said: “Dogs and cats are the traditional pet and there is nothing like them in many ways but they do require the most care.

We are all tempted to sympathise with the runt but in the long-run they are the ones who cost you the most and at this time of year may play a huge part in a pet being abandoned when they can’t handle it.” He added: “At the end of the day the fairest thing for the animal is that you ensure it gets the best chance possible and that includes making plans past Christmas.”

DSPCA Advice If You Are No Longer Able To Look After Your Pet: - It is important to note that surrendered animals have a harder time adjusting to shelter life, and in many cases become depressed or develop anxiety. - Ask Friends, family, relatives, co-workers and anybody you know to help get the word out that you are looking to re-home your pet. There is a good chance that some-

-

-

body might know somebody who is looking for a dog/cat/rabbit or small animal. It will be a much smoother transition for your pet to move from your home to a new home versus going to an animal shelter. Put an advertisement in the newspaper. Remember you don’t have to give your dog away to the first person who answers.Don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions, and make sure you go visit where the pet will be living and sleeping. Use your best judgement when interviewing potential new owners, and go with your gut feeling about people. Place an add on www.irishanimals.ie Try posting flyers in veterinary clinics and shops where you have permission. Remember that if you are moving abroad you may be able to take your pet with you. Please see http://www.agriculture.gov.ie/pets/ for more information.

they want but it is also very handy for people to drop their dog off and go and have a coffee or do a bit of shopping. We put a call in to them 10 minutes before the dog is finished so the animal doesn’t get distressed waiting around for too long.”

The store, which stocks everything from live animal feed to lizards, rabbits and fish, is home to every pet accessory imaginable and with a friendly service that is second to none it’s a place where pet lovers will feel right at home. Des told InTallaght: “Over the years we have built up a great reputation and a vast knowledge of all animals. We like to think that people come in here for the chat and the laugh as much as anything else.

While Tallaght Pet store supplies rabbits, hamsters, gerbils and birds staff also order in animals such as Parrots and give advice on the care of others like dogs and cats.

“Obviously there have been huge chain stores opening up in and around the areas but we have managed to retain our business, continuing to keep our customers happy and we are very proud that.” Last year Tallaght Pet Store underwent a €50,000 makeover as part of the RTE programme Fergal Quinn’s Retail Therapy. The shop was refitted and vastly improved to include state-of-the-art CCTV as well as a dog grooming parlour. The room out the back of the shop is fitted with a metal bath where the animals are washed and a grooming table, with all necessary accessories for hair cutting and nail clipping, resides. Des said: “The dog grooming section was brought in as part of the makeover and has been going from strength to strength. We can have anything between three and five dogs a day. Owners are more than welcome to stay during the treatment if

We have a team of highly qualified and very professional trainers and we are there for you from the moment you come in. “Our facility is the first of its kind in Ireland, there is nothing even remotely like it. Up to six classes will take place nightly and each client will be coached through “every move” before they take one on.” “After that they will be assessed and advised, depending on their goals and preferences, as to which classes would suit them best. “It’s all about the client,” Sarah said. “Your goal is our goal. We make your aims personal because it feels like that to us.” We are not just providing a great facility but also a fantastic service that ensures you get the results you want, Your success is our business!” She added: “We promote functional movements and some of the equipment available in D24 Fitness includes kettle bells, rowers, power cages, bumper plates and chin up bars.” At the moment there is a special offer on which sees the first 100 people to sign up to the facility get a 12 month subscription for €299 (less than €1 a class) and the first 100 for a 6 month subscription will get it for €199 (less than €1.33 a class). A month will always cost €55 (2.30 a class) or 10 per class. The club is also running a Facebook competition until December 19th to win a free yearly membership – all you have to do is look it up and ‘like’ the page to be entered. Sarah added: “There is so much mis-information out there regarding losing weight, getting fit etc our goal is to change that and get people the results they want! “The opening offer will be extended to all readers when they mention InTallaght Magazine.” 20

So Tell Us About The Rising?

What Happened To Stillroom?

How Did The Launch Go?

The Rising, would you believe it, is actually the first incarnation of Stillroom. It’s the original line-up. Over the years we had a couple of members leave and others come in but this is right back to the start. The original five.

Stillroom finished in 2010. My dad passed away in the January and I spent the next few months just putting my life into perspective. Thinking about what matters and what I should be doing. I eventually pulled the plug on it. We started The Rising a few months later. We had a couple of different members to start with but it eventually came back to the original five which completed it.

Our first major launch, which took place in Fibbers Rock Bar on Ormond Quay at the end of October, was a massive success. It felt great, like being back in the old days. The fire in the belly was back – a bit like in Rocky 3! We were more raw and more real. I realised that complacency had set in over the years but this proved that we really are back.

So What’s The Idea Behind The Name? Everyone is so depressed lately. People have no money and no jobs and we wanted to put that message out there – a message of positivity – that says just get out there and do your thing. Rise above it.

24

Who Are The Members In The Rising?

What Kind Of Music Do You Play And How Does It Compare To Stillroom?

Myself on lead vocal, Paul Scott on Lead Guitar, Dehna Bennett on Rhythm Guitar, John Hogan on base and David Ebbs on Drums.

Classic rock and blues. It’s not too far off what we were doing but it’s groovy now. It makes you want to get up and dance.

Who Are Your Influences When Writing?

Who Would You Most Like To Collaborate With?

We use personal experience a lot of the time for influence. It’s really good and can be nice at times like recently when Dehna wrote two songs about my Da. We are also a lot more socially conscious so we tend to write stuff that people can relate to – the stuff they are going through now too. We wouldn’t go as far as The Script singing about getting out of bed and making a cup of tea but we recognise the state of the place and what we are all putting up with.

Mutt Lang – He’s a famous rock and roll producer. He worked with AC/DC and Brian Adams among many others. If we could work with him – that would be the dream.

What Famous Bands/Artists Would You Compare Yourselves To? If Prince, AC/DC and Aerosmith had a collective musical orgy which produced children – we could be them!

Any Name For The Album Yet? Not yet, it’s early days – we’re still working on it. Where Can We Catch The Rising Gigging Over December/January?

The Debut album Is Out Next Year – How’s That Going?

We are gigging in The Cuckoos Nest on December 17th. It’s our annual Christmas party. We’ll be there to put some rockin’ in your Christmas stockin’

Great, we’re in the middle of recording at the moment. The EP will be out and available for download before Christmas and the Album will be out next Spring.

So Dave, How Would You Describe The New Album? It's great! How Does It Compare To Heroes And Ghosts And Tony Was An ExCon? We think it's better! There's more textures and a bigger overall sound. It’s still us but we've played together for over 4 years now and we really feel we've grown as a band. We think that comes across on this album. How Much Fun Was It Recording In LA? It was amazing! The studio was right in the heart of Hollywood and we were staying nearby as well. The weather is fantastic, there’s a massive variety of people…what's not to like?

Are You Excited To Be Coming Home To Gig In Ireland Before Christmas? Yeah we can't wait! We're playing 5 gigs at the Olympia which will be a massive highlight in our careers. What Do You Miss Most About Home When You’re Away? Our friends and families. How Has The New Music Been Received So Far? Very well so far. We played 5 new songs at our Marley park gig in July before we went to LA and they went down great. We’ve also been getting great feedback from the people who’ve heard and bought the album so far. We are delighted. What Current Artist/Musician Would You Like To Collaborate With? Jay Z!

What Are Your Views On The Likes Of X Factor? I don't have an opinion about it really...it's a singing competition and if you're a good enough singer to win it fair play! Id imagine it's tough to sustain a career after it unless your really really good though. How Do You Feel About the Likes Of Jedward? Are They A Good Representation Of Ireland? We met them a few times! They're exactly the same off camera as on it. Honestly I don't know what to think. What Has Been The Best Gig You Have Played? Marlay park was amazing, that was probably our favourite gig ever. We supported Paul McCartney too which is something to tell the grandkids about! Where Is Your Favourite Venue To Play – At Home And Abroad? The Olympia theatre in Dublin is my favourite. Also La Cigale in Paris where we supported the Script was an incredible venue.

01 28

Your Experience With Tony The Bus Driver In America Was Very Strange And Slightly Disturbing – Have You Ever Heard What Became Of Him?

What Are You Afraid Of?

No nothing yet, we're still waiting for him to show up at a gig!

Are There Any Up-And-Coming Bands Which You Have Come Across On Your Travels That You Think Are The Ones To Watch?

If There Was One Song That You Wish You Had Written What Would It Be? 'Something' by George Harrison. What’s Your Biggest Achievement To Date? Selling out Marlay Park was a great feeling. Hopefully our greatest achievement is still ahead of us. When Will You Know You’ve Completely Made It?

People walking out of one of our gigs! I had a dream about that recently and it was awful!

Kanyu Tree and the Riptide Movement are cool up-and-coming Irish bands. Also Miracle Bell are a great band too. If You Had To Create A Dream Band – Drummer, Guitarist, Bass Player And Lead Singer – Using Any Musicians Past Or Present (Excluding Yourselves) – Who Would They Be? Keith Moon on drums, Paul McCartney on bass, John Squire on guitar, and an elderly Robert Plant on lead vocal.

When I own a house, any kind of house as long as I own it! Which Celebrity Would You Most Like To Meet? We met Obama and Paul McCartney, and Paul McGrath is a fan so we're not doing badly! Maybe George Harrison if he was alive.

How Are You Feeling About The Show Airing?

Has It Changed Your Life In Any Way So Far?

I am completely excited about the show airing. I think all the waiting is making me more eager for it to come out [a release date has not been confirmed ye]. I’m obviously apprehensive as I’m sure anybody would be about being on TV. You would always have in the back of your head ‘oh how am I going to look on TV’? How do I sound? Did I say anything stupid? All those kind of things would be on my mind but I am really positive and just can’t wait.

Well not really. Everybody went back to their normal lives after the show finished recording. I went back to modelling and writing my column for InTallaght, back to the family and my dog. So all the cast really just picked up where they had left off before entering the house. I think the big changes will happen when the adverts and the show hits the TV screens.

What Did You Hope To Get Out Of It? How Did You Get Involved In The Show? Well I first got word of the show when I was down in TV3 doing a modelling job, then I found more information at home on Facebook . My first reaction was that there was no way I would take part in a show like that, even though I really enjoy reality TV shows I had no intentions of being one. I decided in the end to go for the audition for the craic! I was actually the first person auditioned from all the applicants. I was asked to do a second interview then in TV3 a week or two later. I got a call a week later whilst I was in Dunnes Stores, Kilnamanagh, doing the shopping saying they would love me for the show. So that’s how it all happened it was very exciting.

I really did feel like I had a huge amount to gain by taking part in the show. There are so many stunning models in Ireland everybody is always looking for that edge and being on television is a huge push into the public eye nationwide. The exposure could potentially be huge to my modelling career.

What Do Your Friends & Family Think Of You Doing It? Ah [laughs]. Well my family are all mad, they are good craic so I know they will be able to just laugh at the show. I know I have their support but parents always have their concerns which I totally understand. My friends are all very positive and excited about the show. 25 31

Are You Nervous About It Airing? I know when it comes closer to the new year I will start to get a bit more nervous but as of now it’s just pure exciting. The entire experience has been a blast and the build up is killing me. Of course every now and again I think ‘Oh dear I am actually going to be on TV, all of Ireland are going to know me,’ and to a certain extent the nerves kick in then. Are There Any Embarassing Moments You Are Cringing About Already? [Laughs out loud] Yes of course! There are one or two embarassing moments I am dreading. You forget the cameras catch every last detail so, actually, there might be more than one or two. So What Kind Of Men Do You Go For & Did You Hook Up With Anybody On The Show? Oh well I’m very open-minded when it comes to my taste in men. I always go for a huge personality, somebody who you can talk to and have a bit of fun with. I am really attracted to motivated and positive people because I am like that myself. Looks are not everything but I do appreciate a man who looks after himself. [Laughing again] You will have to tune in to the show to get the juicy details but I will say this - there were a lot of love-related dramas between a few characters in the house.

Am I Right In Saying You Had A Boyfriend Going Into The House & How Did He Feel About That ? I certainly did have a boyfriend going into the house. He obviously had his concerns as I was going to be away for a month with no phone but it was a huge opportunity for me and there

32

was no way I could not take part just because my boyfriend had reservations. I am only 22 years old and my career and success is my focus. I also knew it would be a lot of fun so I was eager to take part regardless.

ticed them and we were not allowed interact with the camera crew so I would say by day three its was the norm!

Who Was Your Favourite Person On The House?

24/7, Wednesday to Sunday. Then we had a bit of down time on Mondays on Tuesdays where there were no camera crews following us but the cameras in the Tallafornia house were still on.

I was really close to one person in the house we had a lot in common which actually suprised me. When we first met I thought I would get along with this person the least. It’s funny the way that happens. Who Was Your Least Favourite? That changed a few times whilst I was in the house but there was one person in particular that got on my nerves….still, we’re friends now! Did It Take Long To Get Used To The Cameras? Two Beers!! [Laughs] Nah I’m joking. You would actually be surprised how quick you adapt to the camera crew and the cameras in the house. We were having so much fun that we barely no-

How Many Hours A Day Were You Followed?

Were Bedrooms Private Or Were Cameras Allowed In There Too? The only areas in the house that were really private were the bathrooms but there was still sound so we had no privacy really. There were cameras in every bedroom. Was Any Of The Show Scripted Or Were You Told What To Say At Any Time? No scripts were used at any stage. It was completely genuine, real life.

What Do You Think Of The Likes Of Jersey & Geordie Shore? I enjoy nothing more than sitting in on a Tuesday night with my two best pals Grace and Emma or my little sister Mollie watching a bit of reality TV like Jersey and Geordie shore. It’s a bit of fun and it makes me laugh. I don’t think they’re ever going to win any awards for being the most thought-provoking shows but so what? It’s entertaining. That’s the beauty of the world we live in today we have so much choice. Other nights I enjoy nothing more than watching the Discovery channel or tuning into the football or Boardwalk Empire. It really gets me all this negativity and hype about reality shows. If it’s not your kind of show don’t watch it - simple! It amazes me sometimes how much energy people put into giving out about topics like this. I think they should just channel all that energy and use it to do something positive.

Do You Watch TOWIE Or Made In Chelsea & How Do They Compare To Tallafornia? No I actually have only seen about 10 minutes of TOWIE and I’m going to be honest I wasn’t addicted straight away. My friends all tell me to watch it though, so ill definitely give it a chance sometime soon when I get a spare minute. I am very open minded ill give everything a chance.

Do You Think That The Group Is A Fair Representation Of Tallaght (West Dublin) People? I think we are the perfect representation of West Dublin people. Each character on the show is so different that everybody watching will associate with somebody on the show. Tallaght is a diverse place full of different kinds of people and so is the show. There Are A Lot Of Negative Comments About The Show On The Internet Already Do You Think People Will Be Pleasantly Surprised? I think there are honestly going to be people that hate the show and there are people that are going to love the show. I just hope people remember that we are all real people. We just want to have fun and be successful. Life is too serious right now and things are tough. I think the show is just a bit of fun so I’d say to people njoy it because we certainly did. Are You Proud Of The Show? You will have to ask me that when the show is over [Laughs out loud]. No I am 100% proud to be a part of the show and I want everybody to know Tallaght is a great place to be from. The people from Tal-

laght living in Tallaght , working in Tallaght and going to college in Tallaght are sound hardworking individuals and the show will definitely highlight this. Will You Keep In Touch With The Others? Oh of course! I’m sure we will all see loads of each other again once the show air. Everybody has their own lives and their own friends so I don’t think we will all be best friends after the show and be talking on the phone every day but Facebook is a great tool. We all stay in touch through that mostly. There are some I talk to way more than others. If A Second Series Is Committed Will You Take Part? YES! I know all the cast are praying for a season two. I’ve already lost my dignity on season one I might as well go for a season two [laughs]. Only kidding! You've Signed With Assets Now Did They Have Any Input Into What You Did On The Show Apart From Toning The Swearing Down?! No they were very supportive. I’m sure they realise it’s a huge opportunity for me as a model in Ireland. They know I have a huge personality so they were very excited about it.

33

Have You Noticed More Work Coming In Since The Show Was Announced? No, not really to be honest. I think the show will only start benefiting my modelling career once the ads come out on the television and obviously when the show airs. Right now it isn’t being advertised in the papers and it’s all very secretive so that’s probably why. Do You Get Recognised Much? No not at all. Are You Happy With How Things Are Going For You Right Now? I couldn’t be happier. Life is absolutely amazing. I would love more frequent modelling work but other than that I am content with my life. I am following my dreams of being a model. I’ve worked really hard to get where I am today and I am proud of that. Would You Have Any Advice To Young People Who Want A Career In Modelling Or In TV? I would tell them to aim for the stars. Don’t let anybody tell you, you can’t do what you want to do but always remember to work hard and stay positive.

34

What's Your Views On Binge Drinking & Do You Think Tallafornia Is Going To Promote & Glamourous Alcohal Abuse, As You Know Ireland Has A Serious Issue With Under Age Drinkers & We Also Have A Repuation Worldwide For Our Alcohal Culture, Whats Your Opinion On These Topics ? I think it’s ok to go out and enjoy yourself at the weekend whether that means going for a nice indulgent meal, a night in with a tub of ice cream or a night out on the sauce with your mates – it’s all about moderation and being responsible. I think it’s an excellent question to touch on because the show does have a lot of drinking and partying and it’s important for people watching, especially young people, to know that there’s more to life than partying and alcohol. Do You Think The Fame Will Go To Your Head & Turn You Into A Different Person? I am very down to earth and I always will be. I have always been a bubbly, approachable laid-back girl and I don’t think that will ever change. I will always remember where I came from and who I am.

So What’s Next For You? Well I guess I want to continue with my modelling and hopefully become very successful here in Ireland. I am really hoping to do some modelling abroad in the new year possibly the in the UK or LA. I would actually love to do Playboy in the future - that would be my ultimate goal. I am very driven so I know if I set my mind to it that I can definitely accomplish it. I would also love to have my own lingerie, swimwear and maybe dress Collection - why not? Oh and of course I’d LOVE a season 2 to be in a sunny destination that would be amazing!!

MAX Howard is a completely unassuming individual. When I go to meet him in Ballyfermot college, where he has had hundreds of students mesmerised in lectures all week the former Disney president greets me with an apology for keeping me waiting. - Writes Emer Mulvaney, Editor The truth is I would have waited all day for a few minutes with the man who brought us Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and The Little Mermaid among many others. With little idea of just how his work has touched the lives of millions of children and adults around the world he settles down in front of me to tell me the story of a boy who left school at fifteen and ended up working in the world’s biggest film production company and no, it wasn’t the script for his latest animation, it was the story of his life…. Born in England Max was threading the boards from an early age with theatre in his blood from the beginning. His father was an actor and from the ages of 11 to 15 Max was hanging around movie sets. “In those days it seemed that a formal education was less important than it is now and while I don’t regret a thing I would have loved the college education, the classroom vibe that I see when I come to lecture in colleges now,” he says.

36

“I loved the theatre and I loved the movie sets and it was all that mattered to me. I just wanted to work.” And work he did. Right up until his early thirties Max acted in several productions and even came to Ireland in the sixties as an understudy in a play in The Olympia. Then in the early eighties, whilst working on a John Osborne production which was trying out in Leicester he got a call from Disney to go and work on the production team for Who Framed Roger Rabbit? “It was amazing,” he said. “They got word of me and my experience in theatre production management and they asked me to come work for them. The funny thing is that had the show that I was already working on been a hit I would probably have been tied into a contract and unable to go but as it went it wasn’t and I said yes.” After that Max went to London where the film was shooting and in October of 1986 he went to LA for the first time. Then in 1991 the pressure was on to relocate.

“Suddenly it dawned on me. She was watching a film that had been made 30 years earlier and she was watching it with the idea that it had been made for her – and her only. I realised that very moment that I would be working in a timeless medium. Films that could be made to last generations and still mean the same thing to everybody. I knew then I had to go.”

just how big these movies were going to be but from Beauty and the Beast to The Lion King I could see that same thing I had seen in 101 Dalmations – timelessness – and every single day since has been amazing.

With the intention of living in LA for two years and returning to the UK in time for his daughter to start school Max set off, entering the unknown but so quickly making a name for himself that he didn’t end up making that return journey. The years that followed were to create the CV of one of Disney’s most successful executives. He said: “As a child I loved Huckleberry Hound, Yogi Bear and the Flintstones so it was a real pleasure to be a part of moving animation on. I didn’t realise

“It wasn’t an easy decision,” he said, “even though it sounds like a nobrainer but it meant leaving my friends and family and it was the early days of animation I didn’t really know what lay ahead but I made my decision after a trip to the cinema with my daughter who was three at the time. We went to see 101 Dalmations. It was the first time that the movie had been made for tape and I sat there with her and as I glanced to my side to take a sneaky look at her expression every once in a while I realised she was absolutely mesmerised.

37

“There have been great strides made in the industry too which has been encouraging – this year there are 18 animations being considered for Oscars while there were only two maybe ten years ago.” Max created and ran studios for Disney in London, Paris, Orlando and Los Angeles. As president of Warner Bros Feature Animation he oversaw hit films like The Iron Giant and Space Jam and at Dreamworks he was co-executive producer for Spirit, Stallion of the Cimarron. He is currently producing a series of animated feature films for Exodus Film Group whose first production Igor was released in 2008. But more than that, these days Max is also giving something back – to those who hope to follow in his footsteps – through his lecturing. As part of this he recently gave a series of Master Classes to film and animation students in Ballyfermot College.

38

The week consisted of four lectures which included Creating An Effective Story and How To Pitch It (Part 1), Producing Independent Animated Films, Acting For Animation and Character Design and finally Creating An Effective Story and How To Pitch It (Part 2). The final day was an interactive pitching session where students got the rare opportunity to pitch to a real-life executive but any hopes of being plucked from obscurity and thrown into the limelight were not encouraged. Max said: “It wasn’t about that, it was never about that and that’s not to say it couldn’t happen but I came to teach and give advice and help the students get an idea of exactly what it is that they need to be doing. How they need to pitch their idea, should they get that elusive slot and nail it. “I spoke to them about the elevator pitch the idea being that should they find themselves in an elevator with an exec with 20 seconds to pitch how to

do it and do it right. I also had students pitch to me one to one in front of an audience and I have to say I was impressed. There is a lot of talent out there and of course we have seen it with the likes of Richie Baneham who was a past pupil here and is now an Oscar winner – I know him well.” Max added: All in all there was a couple of nice ideas and two very clever ones.” So what is it, I wondered, that a man of such talent and stature would consider his best achievement yet. “Still being here,” he laughed, adding “I suppose my greatest achievement is having the luck for opportunity to come my way and the sense to recognize it. Sometimes we don’t see it and it passes us by – I’m grateful that didn’t happen to me.”

What’s Your Earliest Memory In Tallaght?

Same Respect For Clubs And That Money Matters More To Them Nowadays?

Playing football out in the streets all day.

No I think all players want to win trophies firstly.

Are You Proud Of Where You Come From?

To Get To The Level Where You Are You Obviously Had To Make Some Sacrifices Along The Way. What Are The Biggest Sacrifices You Have Had To Make?

Yeah. Do You Have A Close Relationship With Other Famous Tallaght Footballers Like Robbie Keane And Keith Fahy? On international duty I’ve shared a room with Robbie for the last 12 years and we played in junior teams together before that. What Are The Biggest Challenges As A 15-year-old When You Have To Up And Leave To England To Get A Chance To Succeed In Football? The homesickness is the hardest part for any youngster leaving home.

You get used to a way of preparing for football and don't tend to notice the sacrifices because it’s just a way of life. You Were Phenomenal For Ireland Against Russia In September With A Lot Of People Claiming It To Be Your Best Ever Performance In An Ireland Jersey. How Did It Feel Coming Off That Pitch In Moscow Having Secured That Precious Point And What Do You Think Has Been Your Best Performance For Ireland? It was really pleasing because we were disappointed a few days before with a home draw to Slovakia so to put in such a great team performance at a difficult place was great for us. As Well As Keeping Clean Sheets, You Score Important Goals Like You Did Against Armenia In October. What Is More Satisfying - Keeping A Clean Sheet Or Getting That All-Important Goal?

As Is Often The Case With Winning FA Youth Cup Squads, Some Players Go On To Make It While Others Don’t. Are You In Contact With Many Players From Your Successful 1996 Everton Team Who Didn't Get The Opportunity To Continue Their Career In Football?

Getting a goal is an individual thing but when we get clean sheets like in Russia I think the whole team takes pleasure.

I speak to some of them when we get the chance but obviously that’s hard as you get older and are doing different things.

It was really nice of him to say the things he has. He is the best defender/player Ireland has ever had so it meant a lot.

Having Won The Player Of The Year Award Four Times For Man City And Being A Firm Fan’s Favourite While You Were There, Did The Way In Which Your Time At City Ended Leave A Sour Taste In Your Mouth As They Went On A Big Money Spending Spree? I was disappointed at the time but that’s football and I still have some friends there and hope they do well. You Scored Your First Goal For Aston Villa Against Man City And Didn't Celebrate Out Of Respect For Your Former Club. Do You Think That Some Players, Now Earning Lots Of Money, Don't Have The

Paul McGrath Recently Said “Richard, To Me, Is One Of Those Players Who, When You See Him Walking Out On To A Football Pitch Beside You, You Know You’re Going To Be Okay”. What Does It Mean To You When Someone Of His Calibre Rates You So Highly?

Is There Any Player, Past Or Present, That You Would Have Loved To Play Centre Half With? Paul McGrath You’ve Played Under A Number Of Managers From Joe Royal To Giovanni Trapattoni. Who Has Had The Biggest Influence On Your Career To Date? Most of the managers I’ve worked with have been really good with different personalities so it’s difficult to say who the best is. Have You Thought About Life After Football Or What Your Plans Are Once You Hang Up The Boots? No hopefully I have a few more years before that happens. What Is Your Greatest Achievement So Far? In football I think it’s just been the qualifying for euro 2012 and hopefully it will be a great tournament for us all.

So Ryan, What Does Christmas Mean To You? I’m a big Christmas fan. I love the smell of the tree, the cloves, the pudding. I love every aspect of Christmas. It’s the boozing [within reason] season and I get giddy with excitement for the month of December. Do You Make Your Own Pudding? No – I have a mother for that!! [laughs] Who Will You Spend Christmas With? I’ll spend it at home with my family. Sitting around, eating, drinking and playing Trivial Pursuit. There’s no such thing as the TV we play games and have great fun. What’s Your Earliest Christmas Memory? vI think I was probably about 8 and it’s of us coming down the stairs with our hearts beating wondering if Santa did or didn’t come. My father who is at the top of the line goes into the room first and we have the agonizing wait while he checks. Then he comes back out to confirm that yes indeed he has been and we all surge forward and take over. What Was Your Favourite Toy From Santa? This is my nerdy side out now but it was The Chronicle of the 21st Century book. What Age Were You? 28 [laughs] No I’m only joking I was about 16 and it introduced me to my love of history and journalism. It described what happened on any given day in news article style. Did You Have A Favourite Action Hero? No I was more book-ish! I was a funsized nerd…ah but I did love Buckaroo and Guess Who and all that. I got a bike one Christmas too so that was all pretty normal! What’s Your Favourite Christmas Movie? Hands down ‘It’s a Wonderful Life.’ It’s

not just my favourite Christmas movie it’s my favourite movie of all time. James Stewart is amazing – he isn’t particularly handsome but he’s charming and yet normal, a person can really connect with him. The story veers towards fairly grim near the end but it reinforces human decency. I think every child under the age of 18 should be made to watch that film. I’m also very fond of The Muppets Christmas Carol and Elf would definitely get a look in too. What’s Your Favourite Christmas Song? I like the old songs like God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and So This Is Christmas. But my very favourite is Oh Holy Night. I love going into town and listening to the choirs and even though I’m not particularly religious I do love churches at Christmas. Did You Get Jealous Over Siblings’ Yoys At Christmas? No we had a very peaceful household. We never had the United Nations in [laughs]. We were a very affable bunch. We were always happy, Santa always got it right.

Lapland – luckily Santa always plays ball! Who Knits Your Jumpers? There’s a great place called funkychristmasjumpers.ie and another one called gammyjumpers.com. They are great sites with jumpers that are a mix of tradition, tack and borderline fashion! Do You Still Write To Santa? I certainly do – without my letters to him I’d be going empty-handed on Christmas morning. What Are You Hoping For This Year? A big surprise! When Do You Put Up Your Tree? Mid-December. It can’t be too early because the smell of the pines has to last. Can You Name All Of Santa’s Reindeers… Ehhhh….Dasher…Prancer…Blitzen… .. [long silence]…oh and Rudolph!!!!!!! [adds] Ok so no, I can’t!

So Tell Us About The Toy Show. What can I say it’s my favourite night of the year! My favourite Late Late certainly but all in all just my favourite night. What Do You Like Most About It? The children. I just love them. I just love hanging out with them – more than adults! They are more fun, less cynical, they speak their mind and they get enjoyment out of the simplest things. I love just shooting the breeze with them while playing with toys. How Long Does It Take To Put Together? Well it’s two and a half hours live and we rehearse earlier that day but the real work goes on in the six weeks beforehand when all our elves here get on to Santa to ask which toys the kids are asking for this year and to see if he will allow us to try some out on the toy show. There are ongoing negotiations between my people and 01 43

Just when you thought you knew everything about nursery rhymes it turns out Jack and Jill are two oger-like baddies, Humpty Dumpty was a bit of a bad egg and little boy blue, blew his top more often than his horn.

there’s a dance-off and a sword fight. The meeting of minds leads Puss to be reunited with his long lost ‘brother’ Humpty Dumpty who begs him to join forces with them to find the beans, grow the beanstalk and locate the goose who lays the golden eggs in the castle in the sky.

It will all become clear on December 9th however, following the release of Paramount Picture’s latest offering Puss in Boots. He’s the loveable cat which first appeared with his sharp tongue and pleading eyes in the Shrek series. Now he’s going it alone in a 3D animation which will immerse you in a graphical world you may never have thought possible.

Puss point blank refuses but eventually relents thanks to the fancy he takes to his enemy who turns out to be a feline and the adventure begins…. Queue some edge of the seat chases and hilarious scenes which include one-liners to remember. “Do cats always land on their feet?” Puss is asked at one point. “No,” he retorts, “that’s just a rumour spread by dogs.”

It’s the stuff of every kid’s dreams. Adventure, fairtytale and a heroic main character who loves nothing more than lady cats, himself and his precious boots. The voice of Antonio Banderas Puss is a formidable creature with a sword. He’s slick, he’s confident and quite frankly he’s the funniest cat since…well since furballs were invented.

Puss in Boots is, put simply, fantastic. It doesn’t take itself too seriously. The 3D effects are such that you will find yourself reaching out to stroke the cats without realising it and the script is simple enough to appeal to everyone yet clever enough to leave you wanting more.

The film begins with Puss trying to steal some magic beans from the ugly and frightening duo Jack and Jill. Intense in his mission he is unimpressed at coming face to face with another clever cat harbouring the same idea. A face-off between the two leads to a failed operation and the argument is taken back to an underground cat lair where

There’s a well-known ‘three-listen’ rule which must be applied when first settling down with the new Coronas offering. Closer to you, said to be the band’s best work yet, is a grower but while you’re sitting, listening and watching it blossom it’s well worth the wait. From the introductory ‘What you think you know,’ to the now hugely popular ‘Addicted to Progress’ [the band’s first single from the album] it’s a compilation of songs which expresses a certain growth for the quartet. With more rockier strains evident at times similarities with most other bands are, thankfully, faint and it seems that the biggest achievement for The Coronas with this album is its unique and fresh sound. It doesn’t need to remind you of anything else, not even Heroes and Ghosts or Tony

Admittedly some tunes will raise an eyebrow or two initially. 30 seconds into track one and you’ll be waiting for a country-style yee-haw while track 7, My God, is reminiscent of an old Irish Ballad. Track 2, Mark My Words, touches delicately on the old sound while 4 boasts a more mature O’Reilly vocal. In short it’s a record which takes many surprise directions – but all of them admireable. The final track, Make it Happen, says it all really, “There’s no guarantee how this will end, So be brave, don’t behave. You

+ is the debut studio album by flame haired singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran. It album marks Sheeran's commercial breakthrough, having previously released five EPs independently. Sheeran started recording the album in January 2011 in a friend's garden shed in Suffolk. "I wanted to keep that organic, lo-fi feel. I've got the rest of my life to make an album in a swish studio. This time round I wanted to stay true to the sound that’s got me this far", he explained. The 20-year old has built a solid fanbase for his brand of catchy melodic pop. Sheeran has a lovely quality to his voice and produces enjoyable pop, tinged with singer-songwriter flourishes. This album veers between all out quirky pop, ballads and even rapping on a few tracks. Individually the songs are good but as a whole it seems a bit confused. It demonstates a lot of promise but a little refinement would lift the whole affair. Release Date: Out Now 48

Mario Kart 7 is the seventh installment to the Mario Kart series (or ninth when counting the two Mario Kart GP arcade titles). It is also the first numbered sequel in the Mario Kart series. Both Next Level Games and Retro Studios assisted the game's primary development team by providing track designs. Mario Kart 7 presents some rather significant shifts in the gameplay. Tracks now feature airborne and underwater sections; depending on the context in which players find themselves, karts will deploy hang-gilder or propeller in order to navigate the environment, and control of the kart will adjust accordingly. Could this be magic?! He’s the pride of Britain and the hottest thing on TV on a Saturday night (apart from Dermot of course) but keeping up appearances hasn’t always come naturally to Gary Barlow. Speaking out about his weight recently the 40-year-old said: “I'm at a weight that I'm just so bloody happy with and I feel amazing. I'm full of confidence.” Barlow credits his wife of 11 years, Dawn, with supporting him through the highs and lows which seen him hit 17 stone a decade ago. “I knew she was the one for me because she understands me,” he said before revealing that he proposed over a Chinese takeaway after pestering her to marry him for four years. “She has known me through thick and thin. She has known me at 17 stone, when nobody wanted to call me anymore,” he said. “Dawn knows how weight has always been my enemy, how with every mouthful of food I have always felt guilty,” he added. “I’ve actually had major problems with food for years and years. I realised that once I started to eat I couldn’t stop.” Gary admitted he gets doesn't mind people going so far as to say he's lost too much weight. “I can’t say I don’t get a little kick out of it. Me, too thin ... will wonders ever cease?”

X Factor - A Moan Fest Frank & Honest - How We Here At InTallaght Read It Where to start….it’s been a whirlwind few weeks on the XFactor scene and we have to admit that since the last edition of InTallaght our opinions have changed somewhat. Let’s be honest it’s a miracle that we’re still watching it. With the childish antics of the judges who are repeatedly throwing their toys out of the pram and falling out with each other it’s cringeworthy stuff when they start bitching and sniping. We loved Gary to start with and we rate him hugely as a musician and songwriter but his harsh comments towards Louis are getting our backs up a little. Kelly is doing nothing but grating on our nerves week in week out. “Momma you killed it boo boo,” whaaaat? Seriously we don’t know how much more of her ‘y’all-ness’ we can take. Here’s hoping that her new single will be a huge hit for no other reason other than it will mean non-stop touring and promotion – so much so that she won’t have time for the next series. Either that or Simon will grow a clue and replace her. Tulisa, despite shamelessly promoting her perfume off her tattooed arm every Saturday night, has become quite the commendable judge. She’s feisty,

54

she’s honest and unlike some she actually has something relevant to say. Then there are the contestants. Craig is gone, Kitty got the boot, Johnny bid a fond farewell and most recently Janet was ousted by her own mentor who by abstaining from voting between her and Misha B, effectively got rid of her anyway. And then there were four. Little Mix – we love them. Enough said. Marcus. God he didn’t need to get his washboard stomach out to win votes but we weren’t complaining! An absolutely lovely and genuine person Marcus has an amazing voice and his own style and we think he could easily win it. Amelia Lilly, the Daddy’s girl with the massive voice is the comeback kid. We’re guessing third place for her and she won’t be too put out by that with Gary fawning over her like she’s the pot of gold at the end of his rainbow. All she needs is for him to pen a nice track for her and she’ll win the nation over, outside the XFactor house, for pure talent alone…..after all that’s what it’s all about….. isn’t it?!

Hi everyone and welcome to my final X Factor Column! It’s been a real few weeks of ups and downs with so many very talented people getting booted off from Kitty to Craig and now Janet! The judges have had a real tough time when it comes to voting between their own acts and even though Kelly didn’t choose for Janet to leave she made it happen by abstaining. It’s a cruel competition at times but that’s the world that the contestants have entered into and I think that many of them will have got enough exposure out of it that it will still serve them well. The final four are amazing. Being from a girlband myself I am delighted for Little Mix and I think that they could go all the way. Marcus is amazing and very talented and Misha B has it all. Amelia Lilly might just do it though and prove that they were wrong to send her home in the first place – wouldn’t that be great?! Anyway enjoy the rest of it, thanks for reading. Have a great Christmas and New Year!

It looks familiar. It sounds familiar. It is definitely a 911. But unlike the 997, which was a cleverly cost-conscious metamorphosis of the 996, the 2012 Porsche 911, code name 991, is an all-new car. Its body, which now uses aluminum for the doors, fenders, and engine- and luggage-compartment covers, features a much more modern, cab-forward design. The new interior is inspired by six generations of 911s but also takes cues from the Cayenne and the Panamera. In addition, the engineers have prepared a new evolution of boxer engines, the world's first seven-speed manual transmission, and a chassis with a bigger footprint that creates a more confident stance for Porsche's icon. The Porsche 911 Carrera S,will continue on with its 3.8-liter flat-six with direct injection engine, but its power has been raised to 400 HP. This, plus the PDK, allows the Carrera S a 0-62 mph sprint time of 4.3 seconds (an im-

provement of 0.2 seconds). That improvement increases when the setup is matched up with the Sport Chrono Package, leaving a 0-62 mph time of 4.1 seconds. All the improvements made to the new generation 911 have helped the car to significantly improve its Nurburgring lap time. During a recent test drive, the 911/991 has scored a time of 7 min. 40 seconds, or about 13 seconds faster than the previous model. The next Porsche 911 will take on models like the Lotus Evora and Nissan GT-R. One reason for the next 911 to be happy is that one of its greatest competitors, the Dodge Viper, will go out of production, and until we have the chance to see a new one, the 911 will once again gain its supremacy. ......................................................

Aston Martin car company is expected to start the production of a brand new V12 Zagato. The model first unveiled at the Villa D’Este Concours in Italy in may of 2011. The plans unfortunately limit the total number of units to be made to about 150, making this model one of a few truly exclusive cars. This futuristic machine is based off the classic V12 vantage from the same company. A signature double bubble roof borrowed from the racing circuit, a muscular flank and LED lights on all sides of the car, makes for a truly remarkable and aesthetically incredible sight. The body work will be done by hand by the Zagato coach builders, hence the name of the model. The aluminum and carbon fibre body hides the chassis and 6.0 litre V12 engine, shared with the outgoing V12 Vantage. This impressive engine produces 510bhp and 570Nm of torque. The engine is joined to a rear mid-mounted, six-speed automated or manual gearbox, with both auto and manual shift, and an electric or hydraulic system that transfers power to the rear wheels. The car has a 120 litre long endurance fuel tank and a bespoke roll cage courtesy of it’s race car

56

origins. The car is designed with efficiency in mind, and fittingly, weight is kept down via 19-inch forged aluminum alloy wheels, as well as body work that includes light weight carbon fibre. In addition to these features there is an independent double wishbone that features fully adjustable Multimatic DSSV dampers. A braking system that boasts 10 piston calipers – six of which are grooved at the front and four at the rear – are responsible for bringing the car to a halt. The performance of this well-designed car is expected to be about 4.2 seconds for a 0-60mph sprint, and a maximum speed of 190mph - figures that are almost identical to the V12 Vantage. The aluminum skin is sculpted to produce smooth extremely curvy looks by hand, apparently producing the signature form of the Aston Martin V12 Zagato is too difficult for normal aluminum forgers. The process is achieved using a tool called the english wheel that can allow you to concert a sheet of flat metal into a curved, smooth

shape that follows a pair of curves. The manufacturing process also uses some old school wooden bucks, which act a like wooden skeleton for the car, while skilled and extremely patient workers carefully bend metal over it and tap it into shape using an assortment of tools. The skill level that these workers reveal in the finished product is evidence of steely patience and talent. The hand crafting allows the team to expertly model the cars form, leading to a car with a beautiful and muscular design. This incredible car made it’s debut at the Nßrburgring 24-hour race, a signature event that signs off on new models in terms of the dynamics of the car. The 24-hour long race was a worthy challenge and a fitting way to introduce the car to the world. The price for this fine work of art is a steep E330,000, before tax. .........................................................................................................

Ferarri's lust-worthy 562-hp supercar hits 60 mph in 3.4 seconds. It's indisputably attractive, but it is also derivative, as though it had been concocted from the best parts of previous great Ferrari designs. This motor is a fairly insane beast, with the 90-degree, double-overhead-cam, 32-valve mill producing 562 hp at a screaming 9000 rpm and 398 lb-ft of torque at 6000 rpm--a huge increase over the 483-hp F430. The 458's top speed is 202 mph, with 0 to 62 mph in less than 3.4 seconds and 0 to 124 mph arriving in just 10.4 seconds. That means this Ferrari can run to nearly 130 mph before a Toyota Prius hits 60 mph. The engine uses the same basic castings as last year's Ferrari Californiamodel, but the machining is different, with a longer-stroke crankshaft giving

4.5-liters instead of 4.3. The pistons and tappets get low-friction coatings, and the crankcase is divided into two air chambers to minimize pumping losses, which also requires two scavenge pumps for the dry sump. Ferrari uses valves in the intake manifold to open up different plenum chambers and increase low-end torque, and valves in the muffler that reduce back pressure and create lots of lovely noise through the trio of exhaust snaps. The supercar's obituary has been written many times, but in spite of ever more stringent speed restrictions, traffic congestion and the global recession, the breed is flourishing. In fact, the new 458 Italia is so fast that you wonder how much faster cars can get before you need a special license to drive supercars. Public-road driving in the 458 is a supreme test of self-discipline, but it is surprisingly uncompromised, with a flexible engine and reasonable ride quality. A car for all seasons? Hardly; the 458 isn't a massive step forward in the ethos of this rarefied world, especially as it weighs almost 1.5 tons. But those electronics give a degree of refinement, ride and flexibility that simply hasn't existed before without big compromises. In that respect, as well as its survival, the 458 Italia is worth applauding. .........................................

Apple's launch of the iPhone 4 has seen the greatest excitement for a new phone ever - and with HD video recording, a super high-res screen and ridiculously slim dimensions, it's not hard to see why. New iPhone means new hardware, and with the 4S, the most notable upgrades are to the processor and the camera. Apple claims that the phone’s new dual-core A5 processor which is the same CPU that powers the iPad 2 delivers double the power of the A4 chip which is used in the previous phone can accelerate graphics speed sevenfold. In fact, the iPhone 4S is the fastest smartphone we've tested. This means even-more-realistic gaming with faster action and more fluid graphics. The most impressive new feature we think is Siri. Siri is the intelligent personal assistant that helps you get things done just by asking. It allows you to use your voice to send messages, schedule meetings, place phone calls, and more. But Siri isn’t like traditional voice recognition software that requires you to remember keywords and speak specific commands. Siri understands your natural speech, and it asks you questions if it needs more information to complete a task. Siri uses the processing power of the dual-core A5 chip in iPhone 4S, and it uses 3G and Wi-Fi networks to communicate rapidly with Apple’s data centers. So it can quickly understand what you say and what you’re asking for, then quickly return a response. To talk to Siri, you just hold down the Home button on the iPhone 4S. You’ll hear two quick beeps and see “What

can I help you with?” on the screen. Just begin speaking. The microphone icon lights up to let you know that Siri hears you talking. Once you’ve started a dialogue with Siri, tap the microphone icon to talk to it again. Siri also works with headphones and Bluetooth headsets. When you’re using headphones with a remote and microphone, you can press and hold the center button to talk to Siri. With a Bluetooth headset, press and hold the call button to bring up Siri. Siri waits for you to stop talking, but you can also tap the microphone icon to tell Siri you’re done talking. This is useful when there’s a lot of background noise. You can speak to Siri as you would to a person — in a natural voice with a conversational tone. If you want to know what the weather will be like tomorrow, simply say “What will the weather be like tomorrow?” Or “Does it look like rain tomorrow?” Or even “Will I need an umbrella tomorrow?” No matter how you ask, Siri will tell you the forecast.

You can ask Siri to do things like make a call, get directions, schedule reminders and meetings, search the web, and more. What makes Siri even more impressive is its somewhat quirkier personality. Say something like “Siri beam me up” and it will respond with a clever answer like “Sorry Captain, your TriCorder is in Airplane Mode” or “Siri will you marry me?” and it will respond with an answer like “Let’s just be friends, OK?” What really got us going in the office was “Siri, I need to hide a body” the response we got was “What kind of place are you looking for? Reservoirs, Metal Foundries, Mines, Dumps, Swamps” - comical. All round this latest version is well worth the upgrade, especially for the busy professional who will find personal assistant invaluable - in paticular the reminder and appointment setting.

Fold egg white into batter. Place in fridge for 20 minutes, to keep really chilled. This is important as you need it really cold, going into the hot oil. This will make the cod really crispy on the outside. Place cod onto skewers.

4. Spicy Chips – Cut large potatoes into chunky chips. Boil until slightly soft. Strain and dry potato. Cook in hot oil until golden. Place on a tray and sprinkle with Cajun spices and salt and pepper

3. Place the cod into seasoned flour. Dip in batter and place on a plate to drain excess. Place into really hot oil. Cook for 5-6 mins.

Once again we are at that time of the year when Christmas shopping is on our minds. Making sure we have everything for everybody before the rush and panic buying for that last minute Christmas present takes us over. We must be careful to protect our identity from theft while shopping in stores and online. The need to protect your identity online becomes even more important during the Christmas period especially with the increased number of shopping and social networking sites seeking your hardearned cash. When shopping online always make sure to use secure websites only. These sites use security encryption technology to transfer your information from your computer to the merchant that you are buying from. This information, such as your credit card details and other personal information that you may have to submit, is very valuable to criminals. The encryption technology helps prevent computer hackers and other organised criminal groups obtaining your information while being sent to purchase your desired goods. On your web browser always look for items that indicate your connection to a website is secure before purchasing. If you are in doubt where that website’s security is concerned then remember this phrase “Shop elsewhere!”. The indicators of a secure website are as follows: • https:// Make sure that the “s” is displayed after the “http”. This indicates that the website you are browsing is secure. Most of the time you will not see this “s” until you arrive on the website purchasing page to place your order.

62

• When purchasing from a website you should always see a closed padlock picture icon. This indicates that the website is secure and if you find this padlock icon to be open you must not purchase from this website as it is not secure. Remember if you are in doubt there is no doubt: “Shop elsewhere!” Try shopping from companies which you already know and if you are browsing an unfamiliar website then further information should be sought. It only takes a couple of minutes to reassure yourself. Utilise your favourite search engine to search for the company name to make sure they are who they say they are. Check for addresses and phone numbers, especially customer service numbers. All companies must have trading records and details. If you find no other information in the search, remember these words: “Shop elsewhere!” Try to use the same credit card while shopping online so worst case scenario if somebody does steal your identity then they only have the records of one of your cards. You can easily monitor all your online transactions from one set of statements, rather than having all your cards exposed to risk while shopping online. Try to avoid shopping online with a debit card as it exposes your bank account details and carries more risk for you. Credit cards carry more protection while shopping. If you have to use your debit card, remember always to check for the secure website padlock and the “s” after the “http”. When shopping online give as little information as possible about yourself. Never give your PPS (RSI) number or any of your passwords to your own private emails. If you are not happy to give

your information to a website or a blog etc. then trust your instinct: “Shop elsewhere!” If you are being offered something that sounds too good to be true then it usually is. On behalf of myself and all the staff at InTallaght magazine I would like to wish you all a safe, happy and crimefree Christmas!!!

Inspiration Bold confidence which flirts with warm, bronze, earthy tones, creating a romantic sensual fairytale look; a chic retro inspired trend from this Autumn’s catwalks.

Hair • Barry Kane of AnJels Pro-Styles has created a soft feminine wave to frame the face. Barry split the front of the hair and then loosely pinned the remaining piece to create a chic wrapped bun which gives that classic romantic finish.

Flowers • An elegant bouquet with bold colours to complement the look. Vivid colours with yellow roses and red berries create an air of grace and captured a retro inspired chic finish.

Makeup The Foundation • I used Match master foundation (MAC) to give a fresh glow to the skin. A 188 stippling brush was used to apply Pro-long Wear concealer for under the eye and around the nose and chin to give that picture-perfect finish. Tip: Use your concealer after the foundation so you can be more precise with your application and maximise coverage.

........................................................................................................................................................................................................

Joanna Kenna director of AnJels Professional Makeup Artists has collaborated with her creative team again to bring InTallaght readers this month’s autumn/winter bridal collection. ................................................................................................................

The Eyes • We used neutral earthy colour which bring warmth to the eyes. • To define the eyebrows, we used a brow pencil (Stud) to shape and an eye shadow to fill in. Tip: If brows are full and not staying in place use a brow gel to set them. • A highlight is used to lift the brow and give a fresh finish. • To recreate the look use Satin and Matte colours combined (Cork, Embark, All That Glitters). • Apply Prolong mascara and then your lashes (corner lashes only.) • Apply a fine thin layer of eyeliner on the top and bottom lash line. This will make the whites of the eyes stand out and look crystal white in your photos.

Finishing Touches • Highlight, highlight, highlight! We used a mineralize highlighting power to give a heavenly glow to the face. • A hint of colour to the cheeks with a blush (Well Dressed). • For the lips, keep that highlight finish to compliment your skin and give a high shine in your wedding photos (Pretty Please). Hi fashionistas! This week I’ve decided to make it a family affair by asking my beautiful nieces and my sister and her husband to model the wonderful range of clothing that Debehams at the Square, Tallaght have to offer. I must say i was very impressed with the quality of the clothes the design and the competivtive pricing. Debehmans has been at the square for a few years now and it has a proven record of quality and service. On arrival I was met by a pleasant mangeress Jenny who informed me they have a new service of a personal shopper who be willing to guide customers through the latest styles for coming events such as weddings, parties, first communions and especially mother of the bride. The store has the greatest selection of designer pieces on the high street such as Betty Jackson, Julien Mc Donald, Ben de lise, Jasper conran, and of course are very own John Rocha. I hope in future months the good people of Tallaght and fashion lovers take full advantage of this free service of a personal shopper. The pieces that I picked for this week were for a family celebrating the Christmas and New Year. I’d like to thank the staff for their help and would like to wish all of you that read my fashion page a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

The routine was devised during the early part of the 20th century by a German, Joseph Pilate, who was obsessed with restoring his asthmatic body back to health. Pilates incorporates movements and exercises from such disciplines as dance, yoga and gymnastics as well as breathing techniques, although the Pilates routine does include some original movements as well. For some people Pilates is a lifelong commitment and most people will see benefits after just a few sessions. Most of the 500 movements that comprise the Pilates routine can be practiced on a regular exercise mat with no need for expensive or specialized equipment. Pilates can also be practiced by people of all ages, body types and fitness levels – many people in their 70s practice Pilates. Players of many sports such as skiing, running, cycling and gymnastics can also benefit from the Pilates programme. Pilates is well known as an aid to helping people recover from sports-related injuries or strains and dancers can benefit from the movements. On the other hand, some of the gentler exercises are suitable for pregnant women as they help improve concentration and flexibility while giving birth and assist in recovering the body shape after pregnancy. The gentler exercises also mean that Pilates can be safely and effectively used in physical therapy to help treat injuries. Virtually all Pilates exercises work on the concept of “centering” which is basically a way of improving posture by strengthening the muscles close to the spine and the abdominal muscles. By concentrating on this group of muscles, brought together in the centre of the body, Pilates is particularly effective in decreasing the symptoms of lower back pain and things such

as slumped shoulders and potbellies may be a thing of the past with regular prctice. Many people who take part in Pilates find that it leads to improvements in their life such as sitting up straight at a desk, walking straighter and with a better sense of balance. Pilates has even helped people who ride horses maintain their balance more effectively, and in some cases has increased a person’s height slightly. Pilates is what is commonly known as a “no impact” method of exercise – it can be practiced effectively in conjunction with other exercise methods. It is also gentle on the joints of the body and has been proven to counter the effects of over-worked muscles, which otherwise may lead to aches and pains. One key feature is that the series of exercises are designed to improve the mind as well as the body. While doing the exercises you are encouraged to focus and concentrate, which leads to a more relaxed state and better awareness of your body. Practitioners point out that this aspect of the exercises also helps to reduce stress. Pilates has many other benefits that wouldn’t perhaps normally be associated with an exercise regime. Practicing on a regular basis can help alleviate such conditions as urinary incontinence, osteoporosis, sleeplessness and relief from the symptoms of menopause. Joseph Pilate died in 1967, leaving as a legacy the many advantages and benefits of his innovative fitness system. Today Pilates is practiced regularly by around 5 million people worldwide including Oprah Winfrey and Julia Roberts.

With Christmas fast approaching, I’m venturing into the territory of Children’s books this time. There are many Children’s books specifically about Christmas but these will age badly as January starts and little Johnny or Susie lose interest in Father Christmas’ exploits. A better investment would be a more general book, preferably with lovely illustrations and a quirky story. If you have a 4-7 year old to buy for this Christmas, I would recommend The Lonely Beast by Chris Judge. It is the first foray into Children’s books by this talented illustrator and is the tale of a large, black furry beast trying to find others like him. It’s an engaging story with colourful, beautifully illustrated backdrops to this shaggy beast and his adventures. The Beast “lives deep in the woods and high in the mountains. He loves nothing more than relaxing at home or tending to his beautiful garden as well as drinking tea, reading a good book, walking in the snow, standing in the rain, baking cakes, and of

course eating cakes!” But one day he starts to feel very lonely: “He made up his mind there and then that he would go and find some other beasts.” This epic journey sees the Beast scaling mountains, steep cliffs and exploring dark caves. He eventually makes it to the city but I won’t spoil the ending as you should really read it yourself. As fun as the story is, it’s the illustrations that make this book special. The colours are vibrant and the way the Beast is depicted as a solid black shape makes it easy to keep track of him on every page. It has been short-listed in the Irish Book Awards 2011. Bear in mind that at this age, you’re probably going to have to read it to your child, at least at the beginning, so you may as well get them a book that you like looking at too. There is plenty for them take in on each page and targets neither girls nor boys, so would be equally suitable for both.

1. Even younger children can enjoy picture books and getting them used to having books as a source of enjoyment can set them up to be little readers of the future. 2. However, bear in mind what reading stage they have reached. The age ranges recommended are only a guideline. If you know the child you’re buying for well, you’ll probably have some idea what stage they’re at. If not, ask their parents. There’s nothing worse than patronizing a child by buying something too young for them, and while buying a book for them to ‘grow into’ may well work, it could lead to disappointment when it isn’t immediately suitable. 3. Books can be treasured presents and reading is a great habit to get children into, but keep the child’s interests in mind as well. Annuals of TV shows can be a good way to combine an already established favourite and getting your child to read more.

Continued from last month... Lauren sighed gently, “Just give me a minute, I’ll be down now...” Taking a last look in the mirror she cringed, forget about getting browner – I’m just getting oranger by the minute, she thought. “It just had to be today,” Lauren muttered, kicking the waste basket. “That’s all I need, a lecture on “the old days” and how “back in the day” we had to make do with...” Her brother Ben, burst into her room, “Mam says you’ve to make Gran a cup of tea when...” Ben started to cough, “Who’s been tango’d then?” He staggered from the room, bent over, eyes streaming with laughter. She could hear the sounds of her grandmother filling the kettle. “I’ll be down now Gran,” she shouted, pushing past Ben and walking slowly down the stairs. She braced herself for the comments as she took two mugs from the cupboard. “Why don’t you get the chocolate biscuits from the secret stash and I’ll make us both a nice cup of coffee, the way my mother used to make it,” said her Gran, taking the mugs from her and filling one of them with full-fat milk. Lauren, needing no further encouragement, rummaged inside the slow cooker, pulling out a packet of chocolate biscuits. She didn’t know why her mother had a “secret stash” because everyone knew where it was. She watched as her grandmother poured two mugs of milk into a

64

saucepan and turned the heat up high. Hot milk, she thought, I don’t think I’m going to like this! “Kids aren’t really supposed to drink coffee I suppose, but a little of what you fancy, once-in-a-while, isn’t going to kill you,” said her Gran, smiling. Lauren had never noticed before how blue her eyes were, nearly the same blue as the Sunday-best china she used every week when they went to visit. “The tip is to pour a little of the milk back into the mug, mix in the coffee and sugar and pour it back into the saucepan. Then bring it to the boil, stirring all the time.” She whisked the saucepan from the hob just as it looked ready to boil over and poured the steaming coffee into the two mugs. Lauren bent her head, sniffing the wonderful aroma. “Right, let’s go Lauren, you bring the coffee and I’ll bring the biscuits. I have a brilliant movie just about to start, “The Big Sleep” starring your namesake Lauren Bacall, - I guarantee you ll enjoy it.” “Please say it s not one of those old black and white movies that you and Mam love...” “But Lauren, you don’t even notice that they’re black and white after the first ten minutes. Try it, even just long enough to have your coffee, and see what you think.” Lauren blew on her coffee as she watched the old movie - she had to admit Lauren Bacall had something; the husky voice, the mannerisms and even the clothes were quite cool too for “back-in-the-day! She dipped a chocolate biscuit into the hot mocha liquid and let it melt on her tongue. It tasted really good. Her gran dabbed her eyes with a tissue, “What do you think?” she sniffed. “She married her co-star,

Humphrey Bogart, you know.” “I don’t know about the music gran, but it’s not a bad movie, and you’re right, you do kinda forget about it being black and white after the first few minutes.” “I’m home!” The door opened and her Mum stuck her head around the door. “Ah, great movie, Raymond Chandler’s first novel, did I ever tell you we named you after Lauren Bacall?” Lauren nodded, smiling, “Only just about every time you watch an old black and white movie, but I hadn’t realised how cool she was.” “Like I said, your namesake,” smiled her mam, as she sat on the arm of her chair and kissed her on the head. “I used to copy her make-up, a real case of “less-is-more , but she had that look off to a tee. Look at her perfect complexion, the matt lipstick making the perfect pout and those eyebrows.” Lauren looked up to see if her mother was inadvertently making a reference to her latest tan fiasco, but she was sitting forward staring intently at the TV. “And I can’t believe you’re crying Mam. Thank God it’s not that old Bette Davis movie you loved,” she clicked her fingers, “Remind me to get a bucket for your gran and waterproof mascara for us, when we watch that one, what was it called, Bette Davis was a governess and there was a French guy, Charles Boyer, I think...” All This and Heaven Too”, they don’t make them like that any more,” her gran sniffed. ***** November rolled in and another Saturday morning found Lauren, Sarah, Kate and Debbie aboard the Luas. They noticed a few admiring glances from

67

other commuters as they sat and chatted animatedly. “Typical, we’re all looking good and no-one worthwhile to see us,” sniffed Debbie, flicking her glossy mane back from her shoulders. Kate pouted, “And who, exactly, did you mean?” she asked. Debbie ignored the question, instead pulling a DVD from her bag and staring intently at the cover. “You know, your Gran is alright Lauren. Great idea for make-up tips with these old movies, and the movies actually aren’t too bad either,” she said, as she glanced down at Deborah Kerr on the cover of “From Here to Eternity . The Luas stopped and they headed towards Tallaght Library. Lauren scanned through the DVD’s. She could see Debbie in the distance, trying to look cool, as she tried unsuccessfully, to return her DVD on the self-service scanner. She groaned

inwardly as she saw Luke heading towards her, Debbie would be in foul humour later - she hated to look anything but cool. It had been hard enough to talk the girls into going to the library in the first place! Not that they minded now, she thought, after they’d seen it wasn’t just books and that they also had a huge selection of DVD’s and CD’s at the end of their perfectly manicured fingertips. “Not very gadget-friendly, Debs?” Debbie turned to see Luke heading towards her, he did a double-take, “em, here, I’ll, eh, I’ll do that for you,” he stuttered, shooting bright red. Lauren smiled to herself, as she reached towards “The African Queen”, but an arm brushed against her shoulder as it snatched the DVD from the shelf. She turned angrily to see John smiling at her. “Didn’t think that would be your kinda movie,” he drawled, handing it to her.

I would like to just take five minutes of your time to read this. It might not be directly important to you but I do know that it's a huge issue for a lot of people. I want to talk about body image. I'm a teenage girl which means that for me every little thing seems like the end of the world but all other girls my age know that for us, not looking skinny can be end of the world. I know that people of all ages can relate to this issue. Society says skinny is beautiful, that's not true. Do you know how much pressure is put on young men and women? A LOT!! Opening magazines and turning on MTV, we see these tiny little stars and let's be honest, it's only human to compare ourselves to them. If you're not the same size as Nicole Richie, you're fat? NO! That’s not okay, the word ''fat'' in general isn’t okay. If there was one word that I could get rid of, like it never existed, it would be fat. That three letter word can do a lifetime of damage; hearing fat once can lead to Anorexia, Bulimia, self harm. If I can just reach out and ask a handful of people not to use the word fat or ever comment on anyone’s weight, it could save a life. Also for all the teens out there looking for a REAL woman to idolize, here’s a few.... Khloe Kardashian, Adele, Demi Lovato, and Mariah Carey, just to name a few. They are beautiful, every person is beautiful! Embrace you curves! For more from Chelsea, see her blog: itschelseatyler.tumblr.com. 68

“For my gran. I didn’t think that would be yours,” she laughed, as she noticed the copy of “True Grit in his other hand. “For my dad. When I’m borrowing books for college I usually pick him up one of his favourite movies. He’s a John Wayne fan,” he said, waving the DVD in the air. It could have been worse I suppose, it could have been Bogart!” he said, nodding towards “The African Queen” with a grin. Lauren laughed, “I don t think you quite have the look of a Humphrey,” she said, tilting her head seductively, while arching a perfect eyebrow.

Drain the fuel tank of the lawnmower before putting the machine away for the winter. If your pond freezes frogs can be deprived of oxygen. Floating a small ball in it will keep a small area clear. Clean away any fallen leaves, if left to rot on the ground, fallen leaves and fruits are great breeding homes for overwintering pests and diseases. Take the time to rake them up and you’ll not only lessen that risk, but you’ll also have some very good composting material. Plants grow very slowly in winter and use a lot less water than in summer. Those outdoor pots you could barely keep moist in summer may now be thoroughly waterlogged. Check them and if necessary move them up on bricks or small timber blocks to allow them to drain properly. If that doesn’t work move them to a sunnier or more sheltered position. Container grown plants are more at risk from frost damage than plants growing in the border. Protect plants by wrapping the pots with a layer of insulation. Protect your fruit trees from winter moth grubs by applying a grease band to your trees now to stop an infestation next year.

Free-standing fruit trees should be pruned now. Remove dead, dying and diseased branches, as well as branches that are crossing over each other.

Do not give water to houseplants late in the afternoon. The foliage should not be wet when night comes as they can rot.

THE LAWN Deciduous trees and shrubs can still be planted and transplanted. Be on the lookout for any pests on plants over the winter. Small infestations of whitefly, red spider mite and greenfly will soon spread, giving you more problems in the future. Look very closely at the undersides of leaves, at the base of stems, and on new buds for fine webbing. Set any suspiciouslooking plants in the shower to wash off the mites, and repeat frequently. Or, if it’s a small plant, you can shake it around upside-down in soapy water. Insecticidal soap also works, you can control pests by picking them off the leaves too, spraying or disposing of badly infected plants.

Continue to remove fallen leaves from lawns before they block out light and moisture to the grass. Repair damaged lawn edges or patches with turves cut from other areas of the garden. Avoid walking on lawns on frosty mornings. It can damage the grass and often leads to brown footprint-shaped marks. Watch your lawn for signs of water-logging, as the weather gets wetter. You may be able to remedy this with some maintenance - either now, next spring, or the following autumn. .....................................................

The best way of being successful with these indoor plants is to make sure that they never dry out, that their very fine root systems are always kept moist and that they are put in a position where there is a satisfactory amount of light, no droughts and no exposure to excessive heat from radiators or fires. If those few steps are carried out then there should be no problem.

TALLAGHT Swim Team has been operating since 1983 from the Balrothery Sports Complex and over the years has been influencing Irish Swimming with a host of champions. The club, which is home to 48 members, has an array of teams and boasts the fact that every year since it started it has always had swimmers at the National Championships. Since its inception the club has gone from 100 members before the Summer of ’91 when it took the only break it has ever had to just 16 on its return. Today however it is back to 50 per cent of its original capacity and despite being happy as it is it welcomes new members at any time. Club Secretary Orla Mullen said: “The beauty about swimming is that everyone thinks of it as an individual sport but the reality is that even though you race on your own you are very much part of a team – that’s what clubs are all about and we welcome anyone to come down here and give it a go. The only requirement being that you must be able to swim a full length – we are not a teaching club. Just come any Sunday morning for a tryout between 9.30am and 11am.” Members currently train every day including twice on a Friday and Saturday. This had to be scaled back but according to Orla if more people joined and the demand was there the club would look at upping its training hours in line with that. Tallaght Swim Team has four coaches. Marian Lane who swims with the Tallaght Masters has been with the club from the start. Pauric Kenny is head coach and also swims with the Tallaght Masters. Anne Cassidy is a third member of the coaching team while Li Tao, who swam competitively in China, is

a fourth. The club has five swimmers who swim in the high performance unit in The National Aquatic Centre; Clodagh Flood, Brendan Hyland, Roisin Hyland, Aoife Keogh and Alyson KellyByrne. Brendan represented Ireland in the youth Olympics over the Summer in Turkey and previously the Scottish championships while Clodagh represented Ireland in the British Championships. Joe Cassidy (21) has also represented Ireland on several occasions. The Balrothery Sports Complex has been dogged with problems over the years and last year a leak in the pool caused the club’s gala to be delayed while sparking rumours of a closure. Thanks, however, to the hard work of coaches and members the problem was solved and it is back on its feet. It does however need as much support as possible. With conflicting ideas of who is responsible financially the members have been forced to make as much money, together, as possible. It recently held a schools gala at which innovative members opened a coffee shop with funds accumulated going back into the club. A clothing collection in conjunction with Liberties Recycling also raised an impressive €520 and the club will hold its own gala on February 12th to which clubs from all over the country are invited. The club got new starting blocks last year which set it back €2,000 and at the moment it has no timing system so is forced to rent them off Aer Lingus when it has a gala. Like any club it takes hard work but according to Orla the benefits are obvious. She said: “It is a lot of commitment but it is worth it. You have to be willing to put in the hours but there’s a good social scene at the club too. It’s just a great place to belong.”

SPARTAN Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) has been running in Tallaght for the past year and a half. Set up by three local lads the club is based on the Belgard Road in the Glen Abbey complex of the Cookstown Industrial Estate where it shares its premises with the Kilnamanagh Boxing Club. There are three coaches who teach a range of martial arts between them. Daniel Lannelli who teaches submission wrestling, Brian Breslin who is the wrestling coach for the club, as well as one of the tutors for the Wrestling Coach Certificate in Ireland, and Anthony Dunne, who went to America to train, getting his purple belt while he was out there, teaching Jiu Jitsu. Daniel said: “We started off training under someone else originally then he left and we continued on ourselves. Myself and the other coaches have been training for the past 5/6 years and we now offer a range of training to anyone who wants it basically!” The club, which is self-funded gets no help from the government and sees the three men work full-time to support the evening and weekend-run club. Daniel said: “We have applied for grants in the past but we are always getting rejected. The club shares its premises with the Kilnamanagh boxing club so we get help there but otherwise we all work to support it. Unfortunately our sport isn’t under a governing body. We would have to go abroad for a lot of the big competitions but the fact that we get no funding can mean that we have to stick mostly to competitions at home. We do, however, hold our own competitions and charge a small entry fee so we make a little bit of money that way. These competitons are also good for the other clubs to promote them which is what we all need. We are a very new sport, we are not like boxing and Tai Kwondo which already have a reputation.” The Spartan premises is home to a boxing ring, a fully matted area, approximately 15 punch bags and a fully-kitted gym. The club itself has between 20 and 30 members while the boxing club has up to 60. There are all levels and ages and Spartan teaches children aged five years and up. According to Daniel “There are no requirements needed except the desire to train.” Age groups include the Gladiators: 5-10, Teens: 10-17 and Adults 17+. For such a young club too it has a couple of pretigious accolades already. Daniel was last year’s Irish Freestyle Wrestling Open Champion under 73 kilo while Darragh Kirwan was the 2011 MMA league teen champion. This year is also a big year for the club which is starting up a MMA Fight Team and will see its very first pro fighter debut. According to Daniel anyone is welcome to come down and try any of the classes for free to see if they like it. He said: “The club is very good for fitness, self defence, discipline and socialising. Everyone I’ve met through the club I am still very good friends with. There are no egos and no hassle. “We’re affiliated to the Irish Amateur Wrestling Association and we are the only club in Tallaght with our standard of facilitly.” The club charges a monthly fee of €50, all classes are inclusive of this, or €5 per class. Opening hours are Monday-Friday 5pm9.30pm and Saturday 12-2pm. Anyone interested can call Daniel on 087 121 2768 or email him on diannelli15@gmail.com. 72
