Hi Everyone, Welcome to the early-June edition of InTallaght. What a glorious couple of weeks we’ve had, between the glorious weather and the excitement of the Euros it’s been a smashing fortnight. Sadly for the very talented Keith Fahey it hasn’t been such a blast after an injury seen him withdraw from the squad towards the end of May. Keith was due to speak exclusively to InTallaght but understandably wasn’t in the form after the news hit. We wish him all the best and a speedy recovery and are delighted that Trapattoni has given his commitment that Keith is very much a part of his future plans. In the meantime so we have taken a look at the big part that Tallaght still has to play in the Euros with two of the finest footballers, Killinarden’s Richard Dunne and Jobstown’s Robbie Keane, in the country representing the area within the squad. Elsewhere we talk to up-and-coming Drimnagh born musician Peter Boyne who has just released his first album. Peter writes his own stuff and sings and plays the guitar. At just 18 it’s a huge achievement and Peter is determined to make it. In other news we speak to Joyce Kavanagh, one of the Ballyfermot sisters whose book, Click Click – which is about their abuse by their father as children – has reached number three in The Sunday Times list for non-fiction. Joyce talks about her pride in the book and the healing power of speaking out. All this and much more, so sit back, relax and settle in for another great read. As always drop me a line if there is anything you think which may be of interest – we are always willing to try new things! Otherwise happy fortnight! Emer Mulvaney Editor

Sisters’ Harrowing Story Tops Book Charts
(Left To Right): Marian Quinn, Paula, June And Joyce Kavanagh
Three women, who suffered years of sexual abuse at the hands of their father, have found huge success with the story that tells it how it was.
each child worked for him. They were completely under his control and in fear of the outside world. When he wanted one of them to abuse he would click his fingers, hence the name of the book.
Joyce, June and Paula Kavanagh, along with their friend Marian Quinn wrote Click Click, which was released last year and has recently reached number three in the Sunday Times best seller list (non-fiction).
The catalyst for his jailing was when he abused his grand-niece who then tried to commit suicide. Her parents told the Kavanagh sisters’ mother and it was eventually decided to take him to court over his years of abuse. He got seven years, five of which he served, dying one year after his release.
Joyce told InTallaght: “ We are very proud that the book is doing so well, but mostly we are relieved that the story is being heard and that people see the value in reading about others' pain, as we do believe it can helps others in theirs.
These days, amid their hectic work schedules, the women are attending seminars and functions speaking about the book and the abuse in an attempt to help more people understand.
“Click Click went straight to number four in the UK after we appeared on ITV's 'This Morning' with Philip Schofield and Holly Willoughby, followed by an extensive interview on LBC – a London radio station.
Joyce said: “These events give us the opportunity to speak to people directly about our experiences and what we believe made a difference in our journey from abuse. We want people to let us know if they have an event or function coming up where they think we can make a positive contribution.
She added: “These interviews were centred on our book launch at the Hammersmith Irish Cultural Centre, where we held a questions and answer format, which really engaged the audience. “Many of those who joined us for the evening are working in a related sector – there were a number of solicitors and barristers, a judge, some teachers and foster care workers, as well as others with a genuine interest in making our world safer for children.”
“In the meantime we would like to thank everyone so much for all their support and to ask them to keep watching us on our Facebook page, review the book on Amazon and other places; recommend Click Click to your book club – the possibilities for sharing the message that abuse doesn't have to define you, are endless.”
The Kavanagh sisters’ father began grooming his children at around three years of age and by the time of their communion he was raping them. The children attended school but all dropped out early. June and Joyce were around 10 and Paula finished after her Junior Cert. Their father ran a business manufacturing soft toys off the family home and
The women will be in in Belfast, on Friday June 15th, in the Windsor Women’s Centre – an event which is for women only – and in November they will also be speaking at the conference ‘Home Truth’s’ run by Open Door Network, Kerry Response to Violence against Women and Children Ltd. 08
App to action A giant leap forward, in South Dublin County Council’s innovative ‘Fix Your Street’ programme, has been taken following the launch of a mobile app. The reporting system, which enables residents to report anything from fly tipping to graffiti in their area is now made possible via smartphone application and issues reported will be responded to within two days – guaranteed. Mayor Caitriona Jones said at the announcement in County Hall recently: “The website www.fixyourstreet.ie has been a great success to date; only recently I accepted three prestigious e-Gov awards on behalf of the council for the initiative and I am very excited to be here today to launch the new smart phone app. “I would also like to highlight South Dublin County Council’s continued work towards the delivery of high quality customer service to our citizens through the innovative use of technology.” Using the Android mobile phone ‘app’ a member of the public will be able to locate the exact location at which they are via their phone’s GPS (global positioning system) in order to position a report, and send details of an issue they encounter – with photograph attached if appropriate – to the ‘Fix Your Street’ service. The app will allow users to report the issue anonymously or they can provide their name and email address. If they are not at the location on which they wish to report they can check Google’s street view to ensure they are pin-pointing the correct location of the fault before reporting. When they have the correct location they can fill out a very brief form (title of report, description, and location details) and attach a photograph of the issue if available. The complainant’s issue gets uploaded directly into ‘fixyourstreet’ and automatically distributed to the relevant department which can begin to tackle the matter straight away. The reporting of issues to ‘Fixyourstreet’ are also accepted via the web site, www.fixyourstreet.ie, through email and on twitter.

Aslan Price Drop LUCKY Aslan fans, who may not have been able to afford a ticket to the biggest gig in Tallaght this year, will be thrilled to know that prices have been slashed. For a limited time only the cost of attending the band’s 30th anniversary concert, with The Kaiser Chiefs and Royseven, on Saturday, June 30, in Tallaght Stadium has gone from €49.50 to €25. The offer, an almost 50 per cent reduction, came into effect on Wednesday, May 30, and will run until Sunday, June 10. Lead singer Christy Dignam said: “We’re in the middle of a recession and things are tight for everyone. People don’t have a lot of cash to spend on going out and enjoying themselves. “We understand that it’s been difficult for many of our fans to find that extra fifty or a hundred quid in the week’s money. So we’ve decided to reduce the ticket price to €25 for everyone, so that it’s more likely that family and friends can make it along to the show”. He added: “The main thing for us is that the concert is open to everyone, no matter what their situation and we feel that €25 is a great price for an entire day out with a line-up of brilliant live music”. The concert, the first music gig for the stadium and the first headline stadium gig for Aslan, is being billed as an all-day outdoor summer party with great food in a great atmosphere and will feature live performances from up-and-coming band Red Empire, one of Ireland’s biggest acts, Royseven and UK rock merchants Kaiser Chiefs. The band’s Billy McGuinness, who recently spoke to InTallaght about the group’s excitement ahead of the gig said: “The Tallaght show is our birthday, this bands’ birthday. It’s a celebration that we’ve made it through 30 years together. “We are still family and we still have thousands of fans, who made us No.1 a few weeks ago and continue to buy our records. The radio stations still want to play our records and the media continue to be generous and supportive of us, thirty years on. We want this show to celebrate that, a brilliant day out, the best day in our thirty years playing together”. Drummer Alan Downey added: “We’d urge all our fans who were thinking about going to get out and get their discounted tickets now and we look forward to seeing them all in Tallaght Stadium on the 30th!”. All tickets (including seated tickets) are available at the reduced price of €25 plus booking fee from all Ticketmaster outlets until midnight on Sunday June 10. Any fans who have already bought a ticket should return their tickets to point of purchase, where they will be issued with a new ticket. They will be refunded the cost difference between the original standing ticket price (€49.65) or the original seated ticket price (€54.65) and the new €25 ticket price for all level of tickets. Booking fees still apply and this offer is also limited to the ten days ending on June 10. 11
Mini Victory For All There was huge excitement in the capital over the bank holiday weekend when over 40,000 women took part in the Dublin Flora Women's mini marathon, raising millions of euro for various charities. The event, which is the biggest all-women's event of its kind in the world is a 10km race and attracts athletes from all over the country - including the hundreds of women lined up at the Luas in Tallaght first thing on June 6 to get into position to run for their chosen charity. The race began at Fitzwilliam Square at 3pm and the route took in Shelbourne Road, Stillorgan Road, Donnybrook and Leeson Street before ending at St Stephen's Green. Linda Byrne, Ireland's Olympic marathon hope, won the race in a time of 33 minutes 29 seconds. 12

by Padraig Conlon THE REPUBLIC of Ireland came through a tough qualifying campaign to take its place among the 15 other nations at Euro 2012. It was Tallaght man Keith Fahy who got the ball rolling with the only goal in a 1-0 win in the first match of the qualifiers in Yerevan, Armenia in Sept 2010. The following month proved to be a bit of a struggle. Russia came to the Aviva and won 3-2 before the Boys In Green travelled to Slovakia a few days later and came away with a point after a 1-1 draw. Ireland then went on to pick up seven points from their next three games before the trip to Moscow to take on Russia where Richard Dunne almost single-handedly repelled the home side to help claim another vital point for his country in a 0-0 draw. 15
Two wins from the last two group matches set up a play-off with Estonia and Ireland virtually clinched qualification with an impressive 4-0 first leg in Tallinn. The job was completed a few days later with a 1-1 draw at home and for the first time in 24 years the Republic of Ireland were set to take part in the finals of The European Championships. Trapattoni has shown loyalty to the players who have got the team there by picking them in his squad. Unfortunately the man who set Ireland on its way to Poland, Fahy, had to withdraw from the squad right on the eve of the squad’s departure due to injury. Kevin Foley then lost his place a few days later after Trapattoni thought Paul McShane would provide him with better options.
Robbie Keane
His Italian adventure wasn’t destined to last long however as Lippi was sacked and replaced with Marco Tardelli, who didn’t rate Keane worthy of a place in his squad. Tardelli of course now works with Keane on a regular basis as Giovanni Trappatoni’s right hand man. Next came a loan move to Leeds, which became permanent in May 2001 when the Yorkshire club paid £12 million for him.
TWENTY FOUR years ago a seven-year-old boy from Tallaght called Robbie Keane watched Ireland compete in Euro ’88 on TV and dreamed of following in his heroes footsteps. Little did he realise that the next time Ireland competed in the finals of the European Championships he would be leading the team out as captain and all-time Irish top scorer and so next Sunday night when Ireland take on Croatia in Poznan that dream will become reality.
Following a memorable qualifying campaign Robbie fulfilled his dream of playing in the World Cup finals as Ireland qualified for the 2002 tournament in Japan and South Korea. He scored a never-to-be-forgotten last minute equaliser against Germany in the group stages. Further goals came against Saudi Arabia and another last-minute equaliser against Spain from the penalty spot in the last 16 - and encounter that Ireland would go on to lose on penalties.
The lad from the Glenshane estate has taken his place among the greatest ever goalscorers in world football. His 53 goals in 115 games is bettered by few in the modern game. On the list of all-time top scorers in European Championship Qualifers only Hakan Suker and Jon Dahl Tomasson have scored more.
After falling down the pecking order at Leeds he moved to Tottenham Hotpsur for £7 million in August 2003. Here he would finally find the stability needed to forge a career as one of the most potent attackers in the Premier League era. At present only 10 players have scored more than his total of 126 Premier League goals, most of which came at Spurs. During his time at White Hart he also picked up a League Cup winner’s medal.
The first steps on Robbie Keane’s remarkable journey were taken at the tender age of eight with local side Fettercairn. Four years later he made the switch a few miles down the road to Crumlin United. It wasn’t long before scouts from England started flocking to watch the fledging Keane tear defences apart. Despite interest from a number of bigger clubs he decided to join Wolves in 1997, turning down his boyhood team Liverpool. He felt it would be easier to make an early impact at a team in the then First Division.
Keane eventually signed for Liverpool 15 years after turning the club down. He moved to Anfield in a dream £20 million move in 2008 but failed to impress Rafa Benitez and promptly returned to Spurs only months later. His star waned here too and he spent time on loan at Celtic and West Ham before moving to MLS side LA Galaxy last year. After winning the MLS Cup with Galaxy he completed a short but successful loan spell with Aston Villa earlier this year.
His first senior international cap came in a friendly against the Czech Republic in March 1998. Later that year he tasted success in an Ireland jersey when he was part of Brian Kerr’s successful Under 18 squad that won the European Championship in Cyprus, scoring three goals along the way making him one of the few Irish footballers to win a major International tournament at any level.
Keane remains a vital part of Ireland’s squad and at Euro 2012 he has another chance to showcase his striking prowess against some of the best teams in the world. Eight goals from 10 international games in 2011 show that the captain is still capable of doing the business. He has been a loyal servant for his country down the years and his goalscoring record is unlikely to be broken anytime soon. If this is to be his last major tournament let’s hope he signs off with a few more vital goals. His legendary status in international football is all but assured and when the time comes for him to call it a day he can be immensely proud of what he has achieved in the green jersey.
After making a name for himself at Wolves he moved to Coventry City for £6 million in August 1999. This made him the most expensive teenager in Premiership history at the time and he repaid the faith Coventry had put in him by scoring 12 goals in 34 matches. Once again he was being targeted by a number of England’s biggest clubs when amazingly he signed for Inter Milan for £13 million in July 2000. Inter Milan’s then coach, the legendary Marcello Lippi said: “At the time at Inter they had a policy of going for young players and Robbie Keane was the best one I saw. He had good technique and he was a good striker.” 16
Richard Dunne
journalists at the barbecue before the 2002 World Cup, with a cigarette in one hand and drink in the other, to query why people were so concerned about his lifestyle.
PUT SIMPLY Richard Dunne is one of the main reasons Ireland are going to Euro 2012. The Killinarden man’s performance in the 0-0 draw against Russia in Moscow has been described as the greatest by an Irish player since Paul McGrath versus Italy in 1994. He is such an important part of the team that there was much anxiety when he dislocated his shoulder playing for Aston Villa a few months ago. Thankfully he has overcome this injury and will take his place where everyone in the country wants to see him, at the heart of the Irish defence.
It seemed that even a change of club did nothing to make him take stock of how he was destroying his fledgling career. His then manager at City, Kevin Keegan, was on the verge of sacking him when he arrived into training one morning in a state that his boss politely described as "dishevelled." Intervention from the PFA and an understanding approach from Keegan led to a process of rehabilitation instead of punishment. Dunne lost almost two stone, got his head down and developed into a fine Premier League defender. The healthier, more professional lifestyle led to Dunne becoming Man City’s 2004/05 Player of the Year and new club captain.
Richard was born in Tallaght in September 1979 into a noted footballing family. His father Dick played with Shamrock Rovers, his uncle Theo was a manager for 20 years with UCD and some of his other uncles played for Shels and St Pats. Around the time he was born the Republic of Ireland were wrapping up their doomed qualifying campaign for Euro 80, finishing behind England and Northern Ireland, closer to the bottom of the group than the top.
He became the rock at the heart of Sven Goran Ericsson’s Man City team – his partnership with a young Micah Richards was among one of the best in the Premier League. Wonderful performances for the Blues led to him picking up a record three consecutive club Player of the Year awards.
Dunne grew up supporting Liverpool – John Barnes and Ray Houghton were his early heroes. At underage level Dunne represented Home Farm. Known then as the Honey Monster due to his massive frame, his performances for the northside club led to a move to Everton for the Liverpool supporting 15-year-old in 1995! Impressed with what they saw the Toffees offered him a contract and Dunne turned professional in 1996, the same year he picked up the FAI Under 16 Player of the Year.
He ended his nine year relationship with the club when he moved on to Aston Villa in 2009 where has also become club captain. Dunne has been so consistently brilliant for Ireland in the last 5 years that the team always have a chance when he is on the pitch. He played a major role in the qualifying tournament for the 2010 World Cup and his magnificent defensive work was one of the principal reasons Ireland made it into the play-offs as he maintained his high standards in both legs with France as Ireland cruelly fell at the final fence.
Two years later he picked up a winner’s medal at the 1998 Under 18 European Championships alongside fellow current international Robbie Keane. The Tallaght lad was starting to look like a real centre-half . He managed to convince Mick McCarthy that he was worth a place in the Ireland squad, with April 2000’s home game against Greece earning him his first cap.
He carried this great form into the Euro 2012 qualifiers, the standout performance obviously being in Moscow where he made a superhuman effort as Ireland somehow kept a clean sheet. And what of the comparison with Paul McGrath? Well none other than McGrath himself went on record to say that he thought the Tallaght man had put in the greatest ever shift in an Irish jersey.
While performances on the pitch for Everton were steady, questions were being raised regarding his off field activity. Rumours of drinking and partying led the coaching staff to doubt his commitment to making it to the very top of his profession. When he missed a training session his relationship with Walter Smith broke down to such an extent that he was sold to Manchester City.
On Twitter he had this to say: “Richard Dunne congratulations The Best performance I have seen from any Irish centre half and that includes myself...”
His early performances for the Republic mirrored his club career as he struggled for consistency, earning a place in the 2002 World Cup squad but failing to make an appearance at the finals. He famously approached 17
If Modric is on form Croatia are going to be hard to handle.
THE REPUPLIC of Ireland kicks off its Euro 2012 at 19.45pm on Sunday evening in Poznan against Croatia.
While Spain and Italy are considered the favorites in Group C, Croatia are not to be underestimated and getting off to a good start will be vital. In short If Ireland fail to beat Croatia then qualification from Group C is going to be difficult.
The Croats have consistently proved excellent performers on the big stage since gaining their independence 20 years ago. In their first tournament, Euro 96 in England, they made it to the quarter finals and in their first World Cup Finals in 1998, they finished third, narrowly losing 2-1 to the hosts and eventual winners France in the semi-final.
They do however lack a truly world class striker. This means a lot of the responsibility for scoring may fall on Modric. He is an outstanding talent but like at Tottenham, he doesn’t score too many goals. He will dictate Croatia’s tempo yet the question remains whether his teammates can finish off his creativity. Everton’s Nikica Jelevis may get the nod upfront after scoring nine goals in 13 Premier League games following his move to the Merseyside club in January.
Croatia qualified for Euro 2012 by finishing 2nd to an unbeaten Greece side. In the playoffs they faced Turkey over two legs. The first leg in Istanbul was considered a tough match, however Croatia hammered Turkey 3-0. The second leg was a formality, and Croatia drew 0-0 to seal its place in Poland/Ukraine. The Croatian team is managed by the interesting Slaven Bilic, who will step down after this tournament to manage Moscow’s FC Lokomotiv.
Several of Bilic’s squad have struggled for playing time with their clubs this season, while others are potentially suffering from fatigue. “Modric, Srna and Mandzukic, they have all played a lot of games, but some of the players are not getting much game time,” said Bilic recently. “Eight or nine have only started five or six matches this season – it’s far from ideal.”
This current side has plenty of talent, especially in midfield, where the wonderful Luka Moderic pulls the strings in the centre, with Captain Darijo Srna on the right flank contributing plenty of goals.
18
They have made their Tiki-taka pass-and-move style of play famous and once they get into their rhythm they can rip teams apart.
UP NEXT for Ireland on Thursday, June 14, at 19.45pm is the mighty Spaniards in the PGE Arena in Gdansk. The defending European and World Champions go into this tournament as favorites again and this looks like being Ireland’s toughest group match.
So can Ireland do it and have Spain got any weaknesses? Well not really! A case could be made that they aren’t great at the back, especially with the loss of Puyol. Sergio Ramos, Gerard Pique and Alvaro Arbeloa are solid but may struggle against set pieces. Also fatigue could be a factor. Both Real Madrid and Barcelona had very long draining seasons and they’ve looked tired. There are also rumours of bad blood between the respective Barca and Real squad players.
Spain made it to Euro 2012 by winning all eight of its qualifying games and there is nothing to suggest the team’s powers are waning. Thankfully for Ireland one of the best strikers in the world, David Villa, won’t be playing after failing to recover from a broken leg suffered in December. Villa has been Spain’s talisman finishing top scorer for the side in Euro ’08 and World Cup 2010.
If Ireland are to get anything out of this game then they will have to deal with Xavi. The Barcelona midfielder is the world-class linchpin around which his brilliant teammates weave their magic, pinging his way out of trouble and creating chances out of thin air with his wonderful range of passing.
While Villa will be a huge loss the team can still call on either David Silva, Fernando Llorente, Juan Mata or Fernando Torres to replace him. Also missing will be Carlos Puyol – the defender has been the heart and soul of the side and is one of his country’s top performers.
He was Uefa’s player of the tournament at Euro 2008 and was just as influential at the World Cup. On average, he attempted a pass every 57 seconds in South Africa. Cutting out that sort of distribution is going to be a big ask for the Irish team.
The Spaniards’ heartbeat comes from their world-class midfield. Other teams are happy to have a dominant midfielder – Spain has several. Xabi Alonso, Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquets, Xavi Hernandez, Thiago and attacking midfielder Cesc Fabregas – all of whom are exceptional. 19
Italy are currently in transition and it’s hard to predict who exactly will play in this match. On good days, their midfield can be frightening. Pirlo, De Rossi, Nocerino and Marchisio are more than capable of doing the business against Ireland. Defensively you would expect they will be their usual Italian selves and keep opposition chances to a minimum.
OUR FINAL Group game will be against Italy in Poznan on Monday, June 18, at 19.45pm. Irish fans have mixed memories of encounters with the Italians down the years. In 1990 they beat us 1-0 in the quarter finals of the World Cup before we got revenge on them in the Giants Stadium in New York in the 1994 World Cup with a 1-0 win of our own. Cesare Prandelli manages the current team. They had very few problems in qualifying as they won eight of their 10 matches, remained undefeated and only conceded two goals. However in the last eight months Italy have lost three consecutive International friendlies against USA, Uruguay and Russia (0:3 the correct score in Zurich). They also go into Euro 2012 on the back of the latest, and perhaps worst, match-fixing scandal of all time. After police raids on the team hotel last week Prandelli said he would have no problem removing the team from the competition if the powers that be back home deemed it for the best.
Scoring goals may be a problem however. Like Croatia, they have struggled to find someone who can put the ball in the back of the next consistently. Antonio Cassano has missed most of the season after having heart surgery five months ago. Although he is back playing, doubts have to exist regarding his fitness. The most talented striker they have is bad boy Man City marksman Mario Balotelli. While undoubtedly a gifted footballer, he is prone to moments of madness and immaturity. If Prandelli can get his head right then Balotelli is well capable of being the goalscorer this team craves. The current manager isn’t as defensive minded as previous coaches and enjoys good attacking football.
For any other country this type of scandal would be hard for a team to deal with but the Italians went into the World Cups on 1982 and 2006 under match fixing clouds and won both tournaments. This time around though they don’t have the same caliber of players and this scandal seems more sinister than the previous two.
Depending on how the other matches have gone for Ireland this game will either be a qualification decider or a dead rubber. Let’s hope we’re still in with a shout of qualifying when this one kicks off and fingers crossed Giovanni Trapattoni can get one over on his native country and lead us into the quarter finals. 20

No Disguising Talent Peter Boyne is a realist and it is his attitude to life which has provided him, at just 18, with the material for his new album. The Drimnagh lad’s debut record, Disguise My Fear, went on sale in Tower Records on May 25th, and after a year in the making is nothing if it’s not original, he says. Speaking to Editor, Emer Mulvaney, Peter takes us through his journey to this point and shares his dreams for his music – to simply be heard.
And would you compare yourself to any of those? I don’t like to say I am like anyone. When you’re a musician you try to be your own person and you hope that people like you for your take on music.
So tell me about the launch Peter? Well the album was launched in Fitzgerald’s on O’Connell Bridge on the Friday and it’s available now in Tower Records. It was a great day and I am delighted just to have it out there.
So are you managed or did you release the album independently? I’m independent at the moment!
When and how did you first get into music? I started playing the guitar when I was nine. My uncle bought it for me and taught me for a couple of years - then I took off on my own. Is your whole family musical? I have a very musical family. So much so that my uncle tends to play even his shoes on a night out – his leather loafers! When I was 13 I got sick of the guitar so I gave it up and left it in the corner but then when I was 15 I picked it up again, played a song and it went from there. I started playing regularly again. I was playing all sorts, day and night and I loved it. I was playing a lot of my own stuff then and some covers too.
How did the album come about? Well I spend a lot of time down in the Bosco Youth Centre where there is a weekly music programme which is aimed at people with an interest in music. It was about April last year that I went down and the whole idea is to build confidence in people. I wrote a song and said I’d play it for them as they were the only people I felt comfortable playing in front of. I started out with that one track and from there I got the opportunity to record an album. A guy called Phil Porter worked with me on it and I can’t give him enough credit.
So what sort of music do you listen to yourself? I have always been a fan of Declan O’Rourke, Damien Rice and Paulo Nutini as well as the likes of Prince!
What has the reaction been like? Well because we’re independent we can’t afford a lot so we made a few hundred copies of the album, which are available now. We are sending
22 xx
So have you been gigging much lately? Well I’ve been slowly making my way around the city, there was the launch of course and then I played at the Drimnagh festival too. I’ve been keeping busy anyway!
them everywhere and hoping to get airplay. We haven’t got a fan base yet but I believe that if people give us a chance they will be glad. When you say ‘we’ who do you mean? Well there are more people involved like Phil but also my sister Emily and my cousin Amy who feature on tracks on the album.
So where would you love to play if you got the chance? What is the goal at this point?
Do you write your own stuff? I do but I also had a hand from one of the guys from college, Marcus Fleming, on the track ‘I Wasn’t Prepared.’
There are a lot of places I’d love to play – Vicar Street of course but genuinely as far as the music thing goes what I am pursuing is someone who doesn’t know me to come to like me and what I do – that would be an achievement in itself.
What’s that about? It’s about a mate of mine who recently went through a miscarriage with his girlfriend.
You said you go to college – will you jack it in, in pursuit of your music? I go to UCD. I’m studying English and History and God no! If I dropped out my mother would have a heart attack – she says I have to get my degree – enough said!
Where do you get your inspiration? All of my songs are about personal experience. It helps that they are realistic – except when I have writer’s block – there’s nothing I can do about that!

Looking 4 Myself Will Be Available From June 12
Grammy-winning R&B singer Usher has released the official album artwork and tracklisting for his forthcoming seventh studio album - Looking 4 Myself.
“This album is very consistent in the aspect of being eclectic." On his new sound: “Electronic music has given me a new story, a new opportunity to build something I think a mass audience will understand.”
The highly-anticipated set features collaborations with Rick Ross, Pharrell and Luke Steele and boast the singles “Climax,” “Scream” and “Lemme See.”
On debuting “Climax” on Twitter: “I really wanted to offer the greatest courtesy to my fans first – they are ultimately who brought me to this point, and I want to make sure they understand my journey. Twitter is kind of like my outboard communication, one of the places I’ve chosen to speak directly to my fans.”
Due on June 14 via RCA Records, Usher calls the 14-track effort “consistent” yet an “eclectic” project.
Of his new album, Looking for Myself, out June 12 he says: “The cool thing about Diplo, and the thing that made me want to work with him, is that you can’t put him in a specific category or a box. He does everything. That represents what this album is. This album doesn’t fit into a specific box. It is an all-world experience that gives you a multitude of genres, a multitude of experiences: electric soul, revolutionary pop, classic, new tradition, dance, tech and it brings me to more of a relevant place.”
“If you take no risk, you stand to gain nothing in life. Dare to be different. I don't look like you, I don't walk like you, I don't dance like you, I don't move like you or talk like you. That doesn’t make me odd, that makes me who I am. I want people to feel that essence of growth,” Usher says of the album. 24

Boys In Green Out Now On iTunes Only 99c
COME ON YOU BOYS IN GREEN
There's something undeniably sunny and summery about the tune and Rory Gallagher (formerly of The Revs) has managed to craft some rousing football chants around the familiar chords. The video is introduced by Liverpool and Ireland football legend Ronnie Whelan, who participated in a fundraising walk for Myasthenia Gravis in April. Ronnie and eight other people walked 104 miles in four days.
“You ain't never seen nothing like the boys in green,” So goes the chorus of Rory and the Island (ft. Sharon Shannon)’s charity single ‘Boys in Green 2012’ from which all proceeds will go to Myasthenia Gravis Association.
The song itself is a reworking of 'Galway Girl', a tune which has been knocking around since the year 2,000. The original has appeared in everything from a Bulmers ad campaign to the film 'PS. I Love You', as well as being all over the radio since Mundy’s collaboration with Sharon Shannon in 2008.
The song is out now to buy on iTunes for only 99c.

Lara Is Back by Keith Cashin
Lara Croft – a name which hasn't been heard much in recent years – is back and looking better than ever! This time around, however, we meet a much younger, fresh-faced 21-year-old woman. The story begins with Lara, just out of college and on the hunt for ancient relics. She is on her way to an island off the cost of Japan. Before reaching the island an unforeseen storm hits her boat. She and some other crew members are washed over board and onto shore. The game consists of Lara helping and rescuing survivors and unraveling the mystery of the Island. She will have to go through both physical and emotional anguish on her journey around the island. Instead of the usual run and gun type game play this time it is more about survival. You start the game with nothing. No weapons, no equipment and no food or water. You need to collect these items to move on and survive the harsh environment. Instead of her famous Dual Pistols, she only has one pistol with limited ammo, a bow and arrows as her main weapons. There are base camps throughout the map, where Lara can create new items, improve her abilities or fast travel to other discovered locations. There is also a bigger emphasis on combat, unlike old titles where it was a lock aim style combat, this game has a free aim system. Making gun fights all the more easier.
There is still a puzzle system in place, as in previous titles, but this time around Lara has "Survival Instinct" which can be used to help you solve the puzzles. The purpose of Survival Instinct is to highlight helpful objects that Lara can use to solve the puzzle. However this can only be done standing still – but stand still for too long and some areas will collapse, so you will need to be quick. Tomb Raider will be released in early 2013. It will come to Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Mac OX, and Microsoft Windows. Release Date: Early 2013 Genre:

I have had this book for a while but had put off reading it because of its thickness. I always carry whatever novel I am reading in my rucksack wherever I go – It makes having to wait for anything, be it a doctor’s appointment or the bus, much more enjoyable. This is a very thick book but I must say, it’s well worth the space it takes up in your bag! In comparison to last edition’s ‘The Lemur’ which was a very short read, ‘The Lacuna’ is a story you can really get your teeth into. I have previously read and enjoyed one of Kingsolver’s most widely known works ‘The Poisonwood Bible’ which is the tale of a missionary family in the Congo. It is similarly lengthy but wholly compelling. She writes in a way that envelops you in the exotic landscape and lives of her characters. I’ve never been to Mexico, but after reading ‘The Lacuna’, I feel I have some sort of understanding for the place. The story is told through the collected journals of Harrison Shepherd, put together after his death by his secretary and friend Violet Brown. Beginning with his childhood, (just before World War 2), as his Mexican mother leaves his American father and takes him with her back to Mexico. Harrison writes his journals because he can't help but write, like other people cannot help breathing, he is destined to become an author one day.
The book is written as if it is a diary or journal of Harrison's life from his earliest memories. He details his life in Mexico, where through a series of events, he becomes the cook in the household of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Later, Leo Trotsky comes to stay when he is exiled from Stalinist Russia. Harrison's life becomes entwined with that of these three characters, which makes for fascinating reading. As an adult, he eventually returns to America, where his books about Mexican history become best-sellers. However, when the House Committee on Un-American Activities starts up, he is called to testify because they believe he is a member of the Communist Party. Having always been a private person, this causes him a great deal of anguish, and this persecution ultimately leads to his undoing. It is a long dense history of a person, but the way it is cut up into snippets of diaries and letters gives it a kind of treasure hunt feel, piecing together the clues to reach a conclusion. It took a little while to get its hooks in me but when it did, I found it an engrossing read. About the author Barbara Kingsolver is an American novelist, essayist and poet in her late 50s. She was raised in rural Kentucky and lived briefly in the former Republic of Congo in her early childhood. She worked as a freelance writer before she began writing books, of which she now has 13. Each of her books published since 1993 has been on the New York Times Best Seller list.

Average, he thought smiling, that’s just how I look. He took a sip from his pint, putting it back down with an audible sigh. “Told you we serve the best pint of Guinness in the land,” said the old, weathered barman. “Well, you sure weren’t wrong there!” replied the man, lifting his pint, in mock salute, while flashing a killer smile. “Sean’s the name,” said the barman, wiping his hand on the front of his Aran jumper before extending it. “Pleasure to meet you, I’m Jack,” said the dark-haired visitor with the warm brown eyes. Pulling his right hand from his pocket he made sure his handshake was perfect; not soft; but not a tight, finger-crunching grip either. For once, father would have been proud. Jack shook out the newspaper and scanned the articles. No mention yet, of... “And what brings you to these waters then?” asked Sean, “would it be business or pleasure, eh?” Jack didn’t hesitate. “A little of both.” “Well, we could sure do with the business,” laughed Sean. “And what about that Obama fella?”
Father always forbade any talk of politics or religion! Jack finished his pint. His hand returned to his jacket pocket, where his thumb and forefinger resumed caressing the thin rope nestled inside. The noise in his ears pounded as he relived... “Well, I hear they have a lead on that poor girl who was strangled last Saturday,” said Sean, taking Jack’s empty glass. “About time too.” Susan Condon is a member of Platform One, Rua Red. New Shrubs June is one of the best months for buying perennial shrubs. Make sure all new plants are watered very well and continue to water regularly every couple of days if it's really hot until the plants are established and making new growth. Summer Bedding Summer bedding can be planted out in your borders this month, remembering the majority of bedding plants only have a small root ball and are very likely to dry out in hot weather. Prune shrubs which have finished flowering, such as Flowering Currants, Kerrias, Philadelphus and Deutzias, by cutting back old shoots to a healthy bud. In mature plants, you can cut out whole branches which have flowered to open up the shrub and promote new growth. It's best to cut back about one third of branches each year in a three-year cycle. Also trim dead flowers off Weigelia, Aubretia, Arabis, Lilac, and Roses. Roses Continue to spray roses against pests and diseases wherever you find it’s necessary. Deadhead large-flowered and cluster-flowered
roses which have finished flowering. This will promote a second flush of flowers in July and August. Feed after the first flush of blooms with Rose Food. Remove any suckers growing from the rootstock as soon as they appear. Lawn Feed your lawn with spring and summer lawn food, if you didn't do it last month. If weeds or moss are still a problem, use a suitable product from the huge lawn care range. Mowing should now be done with the blades set low, unless the weather is very dry – in such conditions a medium setting will be better for the grass. Aerating your lawn will help it to absorb moisture as well as improving drainage, so if you didn't do it earlier in the year it's worth doing now. However, don't do it in really dry conditions. It is best done after rain. Treat any isolated weeds with a spot treatment weed killer. In the Greenhouse Keeping plants moist and protecting them from extreme heat might be a priority this month. Paint shading onto the glass, and mist plants as well. You can increase the humidity in a greenhouse by spraying the floor with water each morning. Keeping the atmosphere moist

will help to keep red spider mite at bay. African Violets and Begonia Rex can be propagated from leaf cuttings. For African Violets, push a leaf with an inch or slightly more of stalk attached vertically into a small pot containing a mixture of equal parts peat, sharp sand and vermiculite. For Begonias, cut the veins on the underside of the leaf in several places and lay the leaves, cut side down, on top of a small tray of the same mixture. Hold the leaves down with hair pins. After a few weeks young plants can be produced – these can be potted up individually. Plant out grow-bags with your choice of crop. Keep the bags well-watered; bags should also be fed at least once a week with liquid plant food. If you're growing tomatoes don't use the liquid Tomato food until the first truss of flowers has set fruit. Containers Finish planting containers of summer bedding. Make sure you keep them well-watered, especially hanging baskets and also shallow window-boxes. Try watering them once a day if possible when the sun isn't on them. Water hanging baskets by putting ice cubes on the top, moisture is slowly released as the ice cubes melt. Make sure these do not touch the plants as this may cause damage.

I read today that the leaders of Europe were urged to come up with a “Quick solution to stave off a recession in the European Union”.
Tim Hale, an ex-London stock market trader in his book, “Smarter Investing” describes short-term as 10 Years!
More urgently, will Greece leave the Euro? Should Greece leave the Euro? Could Greece leave the Euro? What will happen if Greece leaves the Euro? On and on it goes. The markets demand a solution!
This is not most peoples’ view of short-term I’ll grant you, certainly not the view of the Investment Providers.
All day long it goes on.
When you look at your investments and pensions are they built to deliver returns over the short or long-term?
And does it matter? Yes and no. It all depends on your perspective.
If the answer is, I don’t know or I am not sure. You need to know!
It Matters (with a big M) if you need to grow the economy to create more jobs and increase peoples’ income which is the most important thing this country needs just now.
Investment returns are important but if they are not in the context of what you want to achieve for you and your family, well it’s a bit like sailing a ship without a rudder or building a house without a plan.
But, not short-term solutions to big problems.
Getting the answer to this question and getting the right balance in your investments is important so they can help deliver what you need to attain your hopes and dreams.
It matters (with a small m) if you are a short-term equity stock investor who wants a quick profit.
This needs skill and advice and consideration. The markets will go up and go down as they always have and the stock market is still the biggest bookies’ office in the world where you can gamble away all day every day.
Yes, we need solutions to Ireland’s and Europe’s problems, but not short-term ones, long ones please. If you don’t know what’s happening to your money, ask questions.
For those who want to plan their future, investment returns are important and a short-term view is of no value to long-term investors as most of us are.
As always take independent advice before you decide to change things.

If your complexion is a little worse for wear and those dark puffy bags around your eyes just aren’t going away, then it’s time to treat yourself to the prefect skin pick-me-up, or call on the AnJels Pro-Beauty team and leave it to the professionals. Squeaky Clean Skin Let’s start with cleansing your skin; using a good cleaner is one of the most important things to keep your skin healthy and vitalized. Tip: Double clean your skin to ensure all your makeup is off and your skin is squeaky clean. Try using a white face cloth as this will show up any leftover makeup on the skin. Scrub A Dub Dub Next step is your exfoliate; this will stimulate and regenerate your skin, massage your exfoliator into your skin using small circular movement for around four to six minutes. Tip: Focus on any area where you have blackheads or areas of dryness. Use your exfoliator twice a week to keep skin looking and feeling youthful and smooth and I promise your makeup will sit and look so much better.
Mask it up Finally, a face mask can be used once to twice a week. Chose your face mask to suit your skin type, whether it is dry, oily, dehydrated or combination, there is a mask out there for every skin type. Apply the face mask all over your face and down on to the neck and chest area, leave it on for 10-15 mins depending on instructions then rinse and moisturise your skin. You can also use an eye mask to reduce those puffy, dark circles and this can be used alongside your face mask. Tip: If you don’t have time to sit relaxing with your face mask on, put it on after your shower and before you blow dry your hair.

Good nutrition and healthy eating are important for us all – especially our children who are at a time in their lives where they are either building their health or living in a way that deteriorates it.
The American Academy of Pediatrics has a simple formula for helping prevent childhood obesity.
0: Have zero sugar-sweetened drinks! This is an easy one that EVERY child would benefit from following.
It’s 5-2-1-0, and it breaks down like this:
Ireland has one of the highest rates of childhood obesity in the world. One in 10 children aged five-12 years are obese! Current figures show that 300,000 children are overweight or obese in Ireland with the number set to grow by 10,000 every year. Six in 10 children who are overweight before puberty will be overweight in early adulthood. In 2008, 19 per cent of teenage boys were found to be overweight compared to 6 per cent in 1990. Currently (2012) it’s 36 per cent.
5: Eat five vegetables and fruits a day (the majority of this should be vegetables). I would also add that you should limit fructose/sugar consumption.
Science and history have now shown us, beyond any shadow of a doubt, that sugar in your food, in all its many forms, is having a devastating effect on both you and your children’s health.
2: Limit screen time — TV in particular — to two hours or less a day. (The AAP says to avoid any screen time for children under the age of two) 1: Do one hour of physical activity a day.
What causes childhood obesity? In the vast majority of cases childhood obesity is caused by what our children eat or do not eat as the case may be. It’s not necessarily caused by eating too much but more by eating too much of the wrong type of foods alongside limited activity on a daily basis.

Shamrock Rovers go into this year’s mid-season break in third place in the Airtricity League. The mid-season break this year is earlier than last due to Ireland’s involvement in UEFA Euro 2012 in Poland. The Rovers squad have been given the first week of June off but then Stephen Kenny’s men will be back in training ahead of their next league fixture on June 21st. That game will see Rovers return to Tolka Park for an away fixture against Shelbourne for the first time since 2005. It is a ground that many Rovers fans know well from when the club rented Tolka as their "home" venue over a number of seasons before the move to Tallaght in 2009. Whilst there is no league fixture until that Shelbourne game, which has been moved forward a day to avoid the clash with a Westlife concert in Croke Park, Rovers will play a friendly game during the break. The match is against Swedish side Malmo in Tallaght Stadium on Sunday June 17th with a 3 o’clock kick off. This is a return friendly with Malmo as the Hoops travelled over to Sweden in late November last year as both sides’ domestic season had ended but they were both still competing in the Europa League and required some game time. The home side won 2-0 that night in their Swedbank Stadion and they currently sit second in the Allsvenskan table in Swedan. In the league, Rovendearing into the break on the back of another couple of draws. There was a 0-0 draw in Monaghan and a 1-1 draw with Cork City. Rovers had the bulk of the possession in the game against Monaghan who lined out with a formation that frustrated Rovers but allowed the visitors to dominate. Monaghan played with their strikers playing out wide on each touchline in essentially a 4-6-0 formation. Stephen Kenny admitted in his programme notes the week after that it was up to his team to break down such opposition but he was critical of the Monaghan set up. “It is a system of play I wouldn’t want to see in the league too often.” Against Cork in Tallaght it looked like a late Gary Twigg goal had sealed a win for Rovers but John Dunleavy's even later strike on 87 minutes earned Cork a point. The Leesiders probably felt they deserved that point especially after Gary Twiggs' injury time goal in Cork earlier in the season prevented City getting the win back then. In between those drawn league games, Rovers eliminated Limerick in the FAI Ford Cup progressing thanks to a 1-0 win in Tallaght Stadium. Pat Scully, returning to manage against Rovers in a competitive game for the first time since he managed the Hoops, had his Limerick side set out in a manner that looked to win the game on the night. However, Stephen O’Donnell, making only his second appearance for Rovers of the season, scored the only goal of the game to give the home side the victory. It puts Rovers in the next round of the cup as they attempt to win the FAI Cup for the 25th time. This year is the 25th anniversary of the last time that the Hoops won the trophy. The draw for the Third Round doesn’t take place until July 16th with the tie being played on the last weekend in August.

Graham Gartland was one of Stephen Kenny’s first signings for Shamrock Rovers but the 28-year-old defender was very close to joining Rovers last season. Gartland, who is from Jobstown in Tallaght, spent the last three years with Scottish Premier League side St. Johnstone and was all set to join Rovers last summer before injury got in the way. “I was due to sign on a Saturday and I got injured in training on the Thursday before,” explained Gartland. In addition to his Scottish football experience where he won the First Division title, Gartland brings great experience from his time at Drogheda United and Longford Town. His medal haul includes one League of Ireland title, three FAI Cups and two Setanta Sports Cups. He will obviously be hoping to add to his medal tally here in Tallaght. Rovers are still in four domestic competitions (League, FAI Cup Third Round, EA Sports Quarter Final and Leinster Senior Cup Semi-final) as well as in Europe. Rovers will learn on June 25th who they will face in the Champions League qualifiers that take place in July. “I am hoping to be part of continuing success at the club,” said Gartland about playing for his home town club. “I went past the stadium over the years and it is great to get a chance to play here now.”
