Scottish Firm, ARPL Architects’, design chosen for 1,000-pupil Tallaght school THE design of a new 1,000 pupil school in Kingswood has been awarded after a competition organised by the Royal Institute of The Architects of Ireland came to its conclusion. The award, which was given to Scottish firm ARPL saw the firm beat off the highest number of competitors in the history of an Irish competition of this kind - and the school is set to open by 2017.
Jedward set for Peamount POPULAR twins Jedward will be the main attraction at a special fundraiser for Peamount on Sunday, August 12. The event, which will take place on the site formerly known as Peamount Hospital in Newcastle, will see the boys perform for adoring fans and will also play host to Keith Cullen,Dance La Dempsey and Britain’s Got Talent’s Ryan O’Shaughnessy.
The family day will have activities for adults and children of all ages with free face painting and Jedward upstyles. Market stalls will also offer an array of goods for those in the mood for a browse. Tickets for Peamount Pulse will cost €23 and gates will open at 1pm.For more information log onto www.ticketgroup.ie and www.peampount.ie
The competition received 154 submissions, including 43 international entries from 14 countries, and the winning scheme will now be developed on the choosen site. Minister for Education Ruairí Quinn said the wide interest in the competition is a reflection of the importance of the quality design of schools but the high number of entries also reflects the desperate need of Irish architects for new work to keep going. Congratulating ARPL Architects on their “innovative design”, Mr Quinn said that, as a one-time practising architect himself, he had instigated the latest competition because he wanted to bring fresh thinking and creativity to the design of our schools. “While children in Tallaght can look forward to a school space that truly reflects the needs of the 21st-century student the competition also confirms my department’s commitment to quality environments in schools for all our children,” he said. “It is vital that we consider new approaches to the design of new second-level schools given the changes which are underway, both in terms of curriculum and how our students are taught, and the number of new schools to be built over the next 15 years.” The Kingswood competition jury was chaired by South Dublin County Council architect Eddie Conroy and included two representatives of the department – technical manager Tony Sheppard, who is also an architect, and senior architect Eamonn Greville. Joint second place was shared by Dublin-based de Blacam and Meagher Architects and the Coady Partnership. It is expected that they will be commissioned to design other schools for sites owned by the Department of Education as funding becomes available.
Tallafornia film first Episode of the New Series in Entourage nightclub FANS reality show Tallafornia will be delighted to hear that filming has started on the second series. Entourage Nightclub was the location last Sunday (August 29) as the cast got back in front of the cameras for more drink-fuelled craziness and drama. Kelly Donegan and boyfriend Dave Behan, Jay Abbey, Natalie Geraghty, Phil Penny, Cormac Brannigan and Nikita Murray are all back for the new series, which will be mainly filmed in Santa Ponsa, Spain. Entourage bouncer Charlie Cadeell said a huge crowd turned up on Sunday to check it out.“The Tallafornia crew were in the club recording on Sunday night. It was very very busy, much busier than usual for a Sunday night in the week before a bank holiday.Everyone seemed to be having a good time,” he told InTallaght.
This will be the gang’s last night out in Tallaght for a while as they flew out to the Spanish resort on Tuesday to begin filming the new show. This time round the cast will be put up in a plush villa in the centre of the Majorcan town and filming is expected to last a month. When TV3 first opened up the audition process for the programme last March, they had over 1,000 applicants from wannabe TV stars hoping to join in some of the on screen antics. The last series was, unexpectedly, an enormous hit for the station pulling in an audience of over 2.2 million people, and it will be hoping to repeat the trick this time round.
Aslan’s 30th anniversary gig to take place at Olympia after bitter disappointment of Stadium concert cancellation DISAPPOINTED Aslan fans, who had been looking forward to celebrating 30 years with the band before the Tallaght stadium gig was cancelled this summer, will finally get their big night.

Rugby fever took over The Square recently when star players from the Leinster squad took to the stage at concourse level for a question and answer session. Jamie Hagan, Ian Madigan and Devin Toner spoke to huge crowds of eager fans who put, to them, questions about the team's upcoming game against Gloucester in Tallaght Stadium on Saturday, August 11. Ian,who hasn't been with the team for long spoke about the difficulty that is getting into a team of Leinster's calibre but how life-changing it is when you do while Jamie answered 'serious' questions such as what food he has managed to get stuck in his beard in the past pizza was the answer! The lads were great-humoured and welcoming and had no complaints as men, women and children queued for photos with them and the Heineken cup. The Square's Commercial Manager Cathryn McMenamy said: "There was a fantastic turnout on the day and the lads were great. They were supposed to be here until 3pm but stayed on well past that because the crowd was there and they were very obliging. We wish them the best of luck with the game and would be delighted to see them back again at some stage." The event was a great build-up to the highly-anticipated game which kicks off at 5pm.

Employment prospects have risen in Tallaght after Asian restaurant Mao At Home opened up in The Square bringing with it 15 jobs. The popular chain, which has been operating in Dublin for 20 years, brings to the area the promise of the finest Asian flavours and is situated at level 1 outside.
Out of the 15 jobs eight staff are from Tallaght and the branch is actively looking to employ more locals by advertising for drivers to deliver its exquisite produce. Celine Gilmer, Head of Marketing for Mao said the company is delighted to have opened up in The Square and has big plans for the future. She told InTallaght:“We are thoroughly delighted and very proud to open in The Square. We feel that the Tallaght branch will be our flagship store and we have been getting such a positive reaction from the public in the few days since opening it has been very encouraging. “We pride ourselves in the standard of food we provide and we believe that there is something for everyone on the menu so come in and give us a try – you won’t regret it!” The new outlet at The Square was packed out after just one hour in business and curious shoppers have continued to frequent the premises ever since. With the option to sit in going down a treat those after a take away can rest easy in the knowledge that deliveries for your Mao At Home are also an option. The restaurant promises the use of only the finest fresh ingredients to create its authentic, healthy and virtually low fat dishes and is a welcome addition to the vibrant shopping centre which is welcoming more and more visitors weekly. So Michael will you be heading over to London for the Games?
At what stage of the ‘92 Games did you feel you could go all the way?
What do you think of the chances for the Irish boxers?
You were saying you think Katie Taylor is in with a great shout of a gold?
Yes I’ll be going over on August 9, which will be the 20th anniversary of my win and the day of the women’s final - hopefully Katie will be going for gold that day as well. I’m going to be working for RTE. It’s all getting very exciting now!
I have a very good feeling that we could win some medals, hopefully two or three. None of us foresaw the three medals at Beijing but I think we have a better team now than we had four years ago.We have shown in the European and World (championships) that we are capable of winning medals and we now have to show we can do it at the next level. I’ve been privileged to be the first; I don’t want to be the last.
What advice would you have for our boxers?
Well this is what they all strive for, the Olympics is bigger and better than anything else, it’s their time to show their worth and give it everything they have, to conduct themselves well and make sure they don’t underachieve.Remember what got them there, all the early mornings, all the hard work. They should enjoy it but remember why they’re there. I’d love for all of them to do well.
As I was saying I felt well going into the games, I knew they had come around at the right time for me. I done the work and I ended up getting the biggest momentum. Going into that last fight I knew I could win.
Katie is probably one of our bankers, because she’s got a bye into the quarter finals and she’s seeded, one victory makes her a medalist. She is an amazing talent. She has beaten anyone that has been put in front of her before, so we can’t say she won’t do it again.
Who will be her toughest opponents?
I think Natasha Jonas or Queen Underwood probably (since this interview was done the draw threw up a quarter final for Katie against…either Jonas or Underwood!)
Of the men, if you had to How did you feel going into the stick your neck out, who do ‘92 Games, were you confident? you think has the best chance of winning a gold? I thought I could sneak a medal, not necessarily a gold, I was in good shape and I fancied my chances. I had competed in the ‘88 Games and learned from that experience.
What was the major lesson you learned from Seoul in‘88?
Well my preparation was all wrong, I was star struck! I went out there like a fan, getting pictures taken with sports stars. I didn’t get it right and I got beaten in my second fight.
Michael Conlan.I think he’s the most improved and he has a great attitude, which I love. There’s no pressure at all on him, he’s a young kid and I think he can do it. I know his family well, his father fought in my club Drimnagh Boxing Club.

What are the differences in Olympic boxing today compared to 20 years ago?
Well the boxers today are all full-time thanks to the grants, I wasn’t, I was still a Corporal in the army. As regards the boxing itself it’s actually gone back to being quite similar to when I won it; 3 x 3min rounds as opposed to the 2 x 4 it had been 10 years ago. It’s much better as the more skillful boxer is always going to win in the 3x3.
Are you still involved in boxing?
I am indeed, I’m Development Officer with the Irish Amateur Boxing Association which means I have the responsibility of trying to get kids into the sport. I also coach here at Drimnagh Boxing Club.Hopefully if we win some medals in London it’ll get kids interested in boxing. Even if not boxing, any sport really.
Have you been taking out your medal lately?
Where is it now? Actually a friend of mine has it! He asked me could he borrow it the other day so he’s away with it now.He works with people with mental health issues so he wanted to show it to them.
Is it true you hid it in a sock for the journey home in ‘92?
That was my Dad, God rest him. We came back into our room after the medal ceremony. He went over to the corner and he puts my gold medal into his dirty sock. “What the f*** are you doing?!”I said to him.“Listen”he says,“they’ll rob that gold medal but they’ll never rob my smelly socks.”
Finally Michael have you been getting this week What other sports nostalgic back on that will you be following looking amazing summer in the Games? in Barcelona 20 years ago? Everything! I’ll watch the lot! If I could get 15 tellys on the go I’d be delighted. Diving, rowing, canoeing - you name it!
Ah yeah. It’s mad, sometimes it doesn’t feel like 20 years ago then other times it feels a lifetime ago. Here’s hoping the next 20 years doesn’t go as quick!

CIARA SHEEHY was just 20 years How do you think the Irish old when she took part in the athletes will be Sydney Olympics in 2000. feeling right now? We caught up with her ahead of the games to get an insight into what it’s like for an Irish athlete to compete.
They’ll all definitely be very focused on their events and excited too. Even though most of them won’t be competing until next week they’ll be thinking about what they’re going to do.For a good few of them it’s their first games, it’s something they’ll always cherish. From the time they walk out in the Opening Ceremony they will hopefully be enjoying it.
What are you looking forward to watching yourself?
The athletics, not just the 200 metres,I still know quite a lot of the Irish team,I was on the same team as Joanne Cuddihy and Michelle Carey up until a few years ago.I’m also looking forward to watching Katie Taylor. Actually, every event really, I’ll be glued to it all!
What current athlete do you most admire?
Not really one in particular. Any of the sprinters, Usain Bolt is phenomenal, Paul Heslin, I look forward to watching him.Mo Farah, I know him from way back and he’s a really nice guy. Any of the men’s and women’s 400 metre runners.
Are you still involved in athletics?
No, not any more. I still watch it and that but I decided to take a break from it as I was trying to build up a career outside athletics. It would be nice to be involved again though, as a coach maybe.
Finally, as an athlete who fulfilled her dream of making it to the Olympics, what advice would you have for youngsters starting out now?
As a junior make sure you enjoy every minute of it, enjoy every competition. Sometimes you can lose sight of the love you have for the sport as you’re chasing times etc. Keep working hard and the results will come. Don’t get disheartened. Also don’t be afraid to try different sports, when you’re young you have more scope to do that. I hope all our athletes do great in London and I wish them all the very best.
There was great excitement in The Square on July 19 when our new website was launched as well as our partnership with InTallaght Magazine.
The mall was a hive of activity where hundreds of shoppers turned out to join in the celebrations, win prizes and eat cake! Director of Retail Jack Martin addressed the crowd and spoke about the exciting era The Square has entered and the effect the website and magazine will have on retailers and customers alike. He said:”We are delighted to be launching this new and improved website which is both interactive and informative. “There are so many elements to the site and a lot of research went into what our customers wanted so we are very happy to bring you just that. “Our partnership with InTallaght Magazine is also something we are very pleased about.
InTallaght has become the platform for The Square’s very own magazine and in here you will find coverage of all the organised events as well as news of those to come plus fashion and much more.” Throughout the day of celebration there where balloon modellers, stilt walkers, jugglers and face painters while the MC got the crowd singing, dancing and up on stage where several lucky winners won €50 vouchers for The Square. The centre’s first Community Champion, Bridie Sweeney, who has been volunteering in Tallaght for over 50 years, was also awarded with a bouquet of flowers and a €100 voucher for her tireless efforts within the community by Square Developer Noel Smyth who echoed the sentiments of Jack when he said: “ The Square has been in operation now for over 20 years, I have been involved for 10 of those, and over that time there have been so many
positive developments and changes but none more than in the past six months. “The Square is the heart of the Tallaght community and that is what all these developments are about. Bringing to you, our customers, all that it is you are looking for...and then some more. “I look forward, over the next few months to watching even more progression and the Square’s website and magazine will highlight this at every turn,” he added. InTallaght’s Managing Director Edward Lam said: “It was a fantastic day and we are delighted to be involved so heavily with all of the great things which are going on at The Square - long may they continue.” The Square’s new website can be viewed by logging onto www.thesquare.ie

The return to either school or college is not a time generally favoured by any member of the family. For kids, teens and third level students it tends to mean some form of homework while for parents it’s the struggle to get the students out of bed, fully awake and ready for the day. It doesn’t have to be a dread though! There are so many different stages to love. The first day at school – emotional as it can be is a milestone
in any child’s life and indeed that of their parents. The transition from primary to secondary school – the sudden influx of subjects they’ve barely heard of before, the changing classes every 40 minutes and the expectations to suddenly know exactly what you want to be as you rapidly close in on being ‘grown up,’… and then there’s college. Flying the nest, setting up home on their own with the responsibility of doing the work but without the parental pressure – tough choices will be encountered, but it’s an exciting time and a great learning curve. The key to a more relaxed move into any new school or college year is preparation and with this in mind we have put together our top five tips for getting yourself ready to face the new term and enjoy it as you should...
1. Get your school/college books uniform and equipment early: The last thing you want to do is leave it until the last minute or if you are a parent leave your shopping, for one or more children, to chance.August is a hectic month and the earlier you get out there the better.Especially if you are looking for second-hand books etc… These days most stores have taken the economy, and its effect on families, into consideration and there are many affordable options when it comes to buying everything necessary for a year of study. 2. Get plenty of sleep at least two weeks before: Whether you are a night Owl or a morning person sleep is vital when it comes to concentration and trying to get 24 hours of it in before the big day will not make up for regular sleep patterns in the run up to your schedule/your child’s schedule changing – so get to bed! 3. Have a read over your new books a couple of days before you start each new subject: Ok so it’s not the ideal way to spend the remaining days of your holidays
but it won’t do any harm to have a nosey! It’s not like you have to study it cover to cover - just get an idea about what’s coming up.If you’re a parent get excited about the new books and your enthusiasm will rub off on your child. 4. Devise a study timetable: Do this at your leisure this month.Noone looks forward to studying after a day already spent with the books but set yourself a target and know that any hours around that are your free time – it will deter you from avoiding it for hours on end only to be faced with it last minute, particularly in exam years. This also applies to children but in a more relaxed way. Parents - set a routine where homework is done after school so the whole family can enjoy the evening together. 5. Relax: Don’t get yourself worked up about returning to school or starting college. No matter what input these years require what you get out of them will be so rewarding!

Tallaght Rapper on track to release her new single REGULAR readers of InTallaght magazine will know we’ve been following the career of Kilnamanagh native, and rising star, Lucci Minx, for the last few months. So you can imagine we were very interested when we heard she’ll be releasing her debut single titled “Love Hate You” in September. “Love Hate You”starts off with Lucci rapping about a guy she can’t seem to split from over an Ibizaready beat.“Never thought I could resist it,until you got me hooked and addicted”she sings about him in a voice somewhere between Nicki Minaj and Missy Elliot.
The album opens with some savage riffs on “So He begins to Lie”and“3x3”.You can almost hear the joy from the rest of the band as they get back to actually playing their instruments after front man Kele’s flirtation with dance music.
FOUR YEARS on from their last album, the disappointing “Intimacy”,the forth album from Bloc Party, imaginatively titled “Four”,is a return to basics for the London group. I have to admit I had lost interest in Bloc Party a few years ago. After their brilliant 2005 debut album“Silent Alarm” and the impressive 2006 release “A Weekend in The City”things had started to slip and the band seemed to have lost their way. 2008 album“Intimacy”was a disaster for the band both critically and commercially, and rumours abounded last year that the lads were going to split up.Following such a backward step any new material was going to have to be a big improvement to stop the rot.So what’s it like? Well the experiments in a heavily electronic sound, which reached a peak on “Intimacy”, have thankfully stopped, and there’s barely the hint of a synth.
Next track “Octupus”,which was the first single release off the album,is a catchy pop song but not really a patch on previous anthems. While fans might think it doesn’t bode well for the record, that would be a bit unfair as they do show glimpses of progress,“Team A” is a great tune with fat bass and jangly guitar and is reminiscant of earlier stuff. Bloc Party are rocking hard on this album, and large parts of it remind me of the Siamese Dream era of The Smashing Pumpkins. The band seem tighter,I’d imagine making this album was a lot more fun than making “Intimacy”, which would’ve required hours in the production studio twiddling with knobs. There are a few weak tracks however;“Real Talk” and “The Healing” are bland, self-indulgent filler, which shouldn’t really be on the album. Maybe some fans will like them but both tunes bored me to tears. Kele also attempts to get all political and worthy in dealing with the London riots of last year in “Kettling.” However, he comes across as a stroppy first year college student and the result is a little bit cringeworthy. “Four” isn’t a bad album and quite exciting in parts. Considering where Bloc Party were last year – on the verge of calling it a day and heading their separate ways – I suppose it has to be seen as quite an impressive comeback. It doesn’t match the quality of their earlier output but it does show that they haven’t forgotton what made them successful. Whether long-term fans feel“Four” was worth the wait remains to be seen. Four is due for release on August 20.
The chorus, which reminds me a little of Kylie Minogue, is very addictive and will get inside your head after a couple of listens. The whole track mixes up a few different styles from urban to Euro dance and pop and ends up sounding fresh. By today’s modern pop standards few debut singles come out as well put together as“Love Hate You”and to me it’s on a par with anything seasoned pop performers like Cheryl Cole or Will I Am will release this year. I think that unless you are one of the chosen ones, that the radio stations here decide the Irish public is allowed to listen to, it’s tough for artists like Lucci to make the breakthrough. Hopefully her debut single gets a fair chance and plenty of airplay in her home country but if not I can definitely see this tune being popular throughout the rest of Europe.

Recently Microsoft fulfilled the runours and unveiled its new tablet – the Microsoft Surface The tablet weighs 1.5 lbs and sports a 10.6-inch Gorilla Glass display, edges beveled at 22 degrees, a 9.33mm magnesium case, USB 2.0 and DisplayPort for high resolution displays.
In addition to the magnetic cover, Microsoft unveiled the Type Cover physical keyboard attachment with a full trackpad and clicking buttons for more tactile feedback. Windows President Steven Sinofsky said the device is "the first of its kind." At the recent special event in LA, Microsoft began the presentation with a video detailing their history with hardware (including mice, webcams, keyboards, Xbox 360, and Kinect) before bringing out the big guns and revealing Microsoft Surface. "Much like Windows 1 needed the mouse, we wanted to give Windows 8 its own hardware," said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.
The Microsoft Surface will come in a number of flavours, including those that run Windows RT and a version with an Intel chip that will run the full desktop Windows 8 OS.
"This combination of hardware and software works together to deliver an amazing experience."
That version, which has a higher-res display called "ClearType," is a "full PC," said Microsoft Corporate VP Michael Anguilo.
The tablet is clearly meant to appeal to those whose needs are not being met by the somewhat limited capabilities of current tablet offerings from the likes of Apple, Samsung, Amazon, and Google.
He added that its specs rival those of the most powerful ultrabooks available. Other notable features of the Microsoft Surface include a built-in kickstand for easy media viewing, pen input with digital ink sampling at 600 dpi, and a magnetic cover similar to the iPad’s, but with a full multitouch keyboard and trackpad.
But there are likely going to be some Microsoft hardware partners displeased that they’ve been left out of the loop.
Ballmer acknowledged as much when he said,“It was always clear that what our software could do would require us to push hardware, sometimes where our partners hadn’t envisioned."

A little hot hatch it has been garnering favourable review. It seems we just can’t get enough of its retro bubbliness, cheery smile and Italian chic. The standard Fiat 500 is a fun, cheeky city car that is surprisingly good to drive fast on twisty roads. The Abarth versions are even faster and even more fun to drive quickly. Enthusiasts love the Abarth’s combination of the standard 500’s individual design and the improved performance of the tuned engine and chassis. The interior is a neat and uniquely designed place to be with a good driving position and plenty of space for those in the front. You feel like you are sitting quite high up but the dash-mounted gear lever falls to hand nicely, encouraging you to use it. The Abarth gets sports seats, which testers say are supportive and firm with a wide range of adjustment, so everyone should be able to get comfortable. However, they take up more space than the standard ones do, so what little room there was in the back of the baby Fiat has been eroded even further, making it suitable for children only. The boot isn’t huge but is usable.
It’s a lot fun to drive! The powerful engine is allied to a stiffly sprung chassis giving go-kart-like steering response but on back roads the Abarth comes into its own, darting from one corner to the next in a frantic, terrier-like fashion. The bigger brakes and stiffer anti-roll bars help to keep everything under control,as does the TTC (Torque Transfer Control), which brakes a front wheel if it thinks that things are getting a bit out of hand. Some have said that the car under-steers a bit too much and the choppy ride can be a bit disconcerting on bumpy roads. The turbo-charged 1.4-litre engine develops 135bhp in standard Abarth form and is more than enough for spirited drivers. The Esseesse has 158bhp, which is nice to have but doesn’t make the car go any faster under normal circumstances (i.e. on the road) unless you drive it very hard indeed. This isn't a car that should be bought by anyone just wanting the look of the Abarth. The standard variant would do that job perfectly well and if you insist on the styling you can purchase the body kit.The Abarth is the hardcore version and will only really be appreciated by those who are expecting just that. Priced at €23,500, it looks like something of a bargain. For more details contact Tallaght Fiat who have recently moved to their much larger facilities at Agnelli Motor Park on the Naas Road, for contact details visit www.tallaght-fiat.ie.

Lady GaGa Making Movie Debut In Machete Kills
Interviewed on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno this week, the actress let slip about what could be the worst kept secret in Hollywood. The 30-year-old actress, who is starring in the forthcoming remake of Total Recall, let the cat out of the bag when she was describing a recent visit to see JT in Puerto Rico. She said: "I was visiting my fiancĂŠ there. He's shooting a film there. So I'm vacationing.I'm having the best time of my life. It's fantastic." The pair were reported to have got engaged last December, but have never officially confirmed it. A summer wedding has been mooted, but no date has been set - or made public anyway.
Anne Hathaway worked out extensively in order to get in shape to become the iconic character in The Dark Night Rises, so she could perform her own stunts and fight sequences. She explained to Hello! magazine: "I had to change my lifestyle in order to play this character.Nobody told me to lose weight, but I was told I had to be strong enough to do my own fight scenes, so I spent several weeks getting into the best physical shape I could. "I made sure I got to the gym and made a conscious effort to make healthy food choices, and yes, I did feel healthier. Not only did I have to get into shape, but I had to maintain it for the ten months of shooting. I definitely did learn better eating habits during that time." Soon after shooting the blockbuster,Hathaway had to dramatically lose weight for her role as a prostitute with tuberculosis in Les Miserables. She said of the experience:"I lost 25lb.It was very hard. I lost the first 10 in three weeks and the subsequent 15 in the next two weeks. I don't recommend anyone try this. It was not designed with any health benefits in mind except to make me look like an impoverished prostitute who was near death. "I'm back to my usual weight now and feeling fine, but while shooting the film I didn't look healthy or good and wasn't supposed to.Dying oftuberculosisisnotromanticandit'snotpretty."
Lady GaGa can now add "actress" to her long list of accomplishments because it has been revealed that she is making her big-screen debut in Machete Kills.
Little is known about GaGa's character, Lady Chameleon, but the new actress did post a photo of herself in character, and in true GaGa fashion, everyone is talking about what she is wearing.
Director Robert Rodriguez revealed yesterday that the pop megastar would be taking on the role of Lady Chameleon in his forthcoming movie, which has a star-studded cast including Mel Gibson, Danny Trejo, Jessica Alba, DemiĂĄn Bichir, Amber Heard, Zoe Saldana and Sofia Vergara.
Sporting short blond hair, GaGa looks sultry as she holds a smoking gun with a full white wolf wrapped around her body.
It will also feature Charlie Sheen taking on the role of President of the United States.
Machete Kills is a sequel to Rodriguez's 2010 Machete, which began as a fake B-movie trailer in Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's 2007 Grindhouse. In Rodriguez's next instalment of the planned trilogy, Machete is being
recruited by the US government to travel through Mexico to stop a cartel leader and an arms dealer who has launched a weapon into space. With the movie being released next year, GaGa is gearing up for a big 2013. She has been hard at work on her follow-up album to 2011's Born This Way and gave fans a sneak peek by playing a new song out of her car in New York City. In September, GaGa is expected to reveal the title of the highly-anticipated new record.

A new Tallaght-based company has developed a product aimed at making it easier for Irish job seekers to find work. Based in the Synergy Centre at the Institute of Technology, Tallaght, Jobbuddy.ie is a new online jobs portal for employers and employees. This new website, which has been up and running since June, also has a unique feature known as “SmartTracker”which allows job seekers to check the status of their application.
Aer Lingus and Etihad agree partnership
The company, which employs three people, was set up by Gregg Behan last year with the specific intention of making things easier for both jobseekers and those recruiting staff. So how exactly is it different to other recruitment websites? According to Gregg it’s all in the technology used in this site.
It is planned that Aer Lingus will cooperate with Etihad Airways on flights between Abu Dhabi and Dublin and have full access to flights across the network beyond Abu Dhabi, to points including Australia, Asia-Pacific, the Indian Subcontinent as well as the Middle East.
“From my own experience, and I think it’s still the case, the most frustrating thing about applying for jobs was sending in a cv and then not hearing anything back,” he said. “What makes our site different is the Smart Tracker system which displays application status in real time, whether the person is successful or not, so they’ll know exactly what’s going on and where they’re at”. The company makes money by charging employers to advertise positions, but everything else on the site is free. Currently there are 70 employers advertising jobs. They have also launched an equivalent site in the Nigerian market, which has got off to a great start. “There are five to six countries in Africa that are top of the pile for strength of economy. We happen to know somebody from Nigeria and decided to go into partnership. The site’s bounce rate is 30pc, compared to the average bounce rate for sites here of about 60pc,” said Behan. Facebook shares hit by lack of outlook Facebook Inc shares fell in premarket trading today after the company's lack of a financial forecast reinforced concerns about its mobile strategy. The social network on Thursday reported a drastic slowdown in revenue growth and said its advertising views lagged user growth even as new social ads, which appear directly in users' "newsfeeds", drove up ad rates. Users increasingly access Facebook through mobiles, which have less space for advertising, undercutting revenue.Facebook only recently began to offer limited advertising on its mobile platform. Advertising views lagged user growth in the last quarter, largely due to the increasing use of Facebook on mobile devices, Barclays Capital analysts said in a note to clients. They cut their price target on the stock by 11 percent to $31.
Shares of Facebook, which have shed a third of their value since their botched debut in May at $38, fell below $24 in post-market trading after the company's results. "A lack of specific guidance and cautious management commentary on increasing the pace of investment creates some uncertainty regarding near-term margins," Robert W. Baird analysts said. Facebook saw its mobile monthly active users surge 67 percent year-on-year to 543 million users and some analysts noted it was trying to capture revenue from this change. In a note to its clients J.P. Morgan Securities analysts wrote"Facebook is in the early stages of an important transition in its advertising business that should drive accelerating growth and margin expansion over time.” According to Thomson Reuters' StarMine, six analysts rate the stock a "strong buy," 11 rate it "buy,", 17 rate it a "hold", while one each rate it a "sell" and "strong sell".
Apple buy Saab saved from fingerprint bankruptcy to reading specialist make electric cars Apple has agreed to buy fingerprint sensor technology developer AuthenTec Inc for about €290 million,in a deal that could put its iPhone at the centre of the emerging mobile payments market. Apple is paying €6.50 per share, a 58 percent premium, for the Melbourne, Florida-based AuthenTec,which announced the deal in a regulatory filing. Shares of AuthenTec surged €2.60, or 63 percent, to €6.70 on Nasdaq in morning trading recently. Apple stock was down 95c at €466.00. AuthenTec, which was spun off from Harris Semiconductor in 1998 and went public in 2007, provides mobile security software licenses to companies like Apple's arch rival Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and provides fingerprint sensor technology to computer makers such as HP and Dell. Its fingerprint technology, which is also used in mobile phones in Japan for authentication of mobile payments, could help Apple bring those services to markets such as the United States, where mobile wallet services have been slow to take off. Some analysts expect the next version of the iPhone to include some form of mobile payments technology.

A Chinese-Japanese investment group has purchased bankrupt Saab Automobile with plans to resurrect the company as a maker of electric cars. The struggling Swedish car maker was brought out of bankruptcy by a consortium called the National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS) AB. Financial terms of the sale were not disclosed. NEVS, formed by Japanese, Swedish ,and Chinese stakeholders, plans to establish a new venture in Trollhättan, Sweden exclusively dedicated to development and manufacturing of electric vehicles. The first vehicle under the plan will be based on Saab's 9-3 car, which will be adapted to electric with advanced technologies from Japan, and go on sale in early 2014, NEVS and Saab said in a joint statement. The company will also develop a completely new electronic model using "cutting edge" Japanese technology. Marketing and sales will initially focus on China, which is considered the largest and most important market for electric cars, and later expand globally. "Through the purchase of Saab we begin a new era in the auto industry," NEVS chief executive and main owner, Kai Johan Jiang, said during a news conference. Saab went into bankruptcy in late 2011, after being sold by General Motors to Dutch car maker Spyker.NEVS bought most of Saab's assets, except for the spare parts business and the rights for the Saab 9-5 and 9-4X. Jiang said in a statement that China is investing heavily in electric cars as a way to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels. "The Chinese can increasingly afford cars; however, the global oil supply would not suffice if they all buy petroleum-fuelled vehicles," he said. "Chinese customers demand a premium electric vehicle, which we will be able to offer by acquiring Saab Automobile in Trollhättan."
The 19-time English champions are to sell 16.7 million Class A shares on the New York Stock Exchange, priced between US$16 and $20 each, to raise up to US$334 million (€270 million). The funds will go towards paying off its huge debts, estimated to be as much as €554 million. The club hopes to debut the shares in New York on August 10. Man United’s US owners, the Glazer family, who controversially bought out the club between 2003 and 2005 saddling it with debts of over US$850 million (€687 million), are reportedly set to score US$141 million (€115 million) if the IPO goes ahead.
Bathing In Cool Shade
May
Your tiny body fits mine, perfectly, lying across me, your form, comfortably nestled, breaths slowly, contentedly and so do I.
I love it when May comes around again With its smile of promise and its breath of lilac Warming with a purring feel Memories locked away all year. But most of all I come to remember her in May – My father’s maiden sister, Auntie May.
I trace your beauty with my fingertips and hum the same lullaby, used to sooth your mother, letting the magic of the notes sprinkle love, pure and unconditional, over us as we bathe in cool shade on a hot summers day. Lazy, dreamy blissfully swaying in a shady hammock. Afternoon naps will never again be the same.
Patricia Best Patricia wrote this poem for her grandson Zack. She is a member of Platform One and Virginia House writers groups which regularly meets in Rua Red.
To save on bus fares she cheerfully swung her lame leg Along the Grand Canal from Lullymore Terrace in Rialto To McMorrough Road in Terenure. There to care for us when we lost our Mammy To a sanatorium shut away for such lonely years. May, her hair in a bun, her shining face smelling of Fresh soap that knew no make-up. With gentle soothing voice she used to quell Our children’s squabbles ‘Birds in a nest must agree’ she cooed And led our prayers. Untutored she passed on the positive words of her own philosophy. Did we appreciate her then and did she know we loved her? Yet years on, grown-up children cried To see her laid out in Child of Mary robes. We did not need to be told then that we had a new saint. When May sun gilds the roads of Terenure and Harold’s Cross I see her leave her heavenly host To wing her way along the canal From Lullymore Terrace to McMorrough Road.

Dutchman Gebrand Bakker’s debut novel is an unusual and memorable one. I had known about this book for a couple of years, as it was one of the possible answers to a question in a table quiz, that we may have possibly looked up on someone’s smart phone under the table.Victory still eluded us that night, though I think we came third. Gebrand Bakker’s The Twin came first though, in the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award in 2010, making it the correct answer to that table quiz question. I don’t think I had ever knowingly read a Dutch book before, but this book is deeply entrenched in the farmlands of the Dutch Platteland. Helmer van Wonderen is a farmer. For forty years he’s lived a stalled, frustrated life, with every decision on the farm being made by his father.
It wasn’t the life Helmer intended.Through childhood he was one half of twins – an entity he even thought of inwardly as ‘Henk and Helmer’. But Henk was killed at eighteen in a car driven by his girlfriend, Riet, who was then ordered away by the boys’ grieving father. Helmer was called home from university to take his brother’s place on the farm – and then the mother he loved died.
Dutch is Boven Is Het Stil, which translates roughly to Above Is Quietand this is a quiet book. The protagonist is single, living with his gravely ill father, and this leaves plenty of time for him to sit and ruminate on where his life went wrong, or at least went in a very different way to the life he once thought he’d lead. It is suffused with the stillness of the watery Dutch landscape it depicts.
But now Helmer’s father, too, is dying, and the shift in power between the two of them sets off great changes. Helmer moves the old man upstairs.“He sat there like a calf that’s just a couple of minutes old, before it’s been licked clean: with a directionless, wobbly head and eyes that drift over things.” Is this indifference, coldness, or Helmer’s first chance at revenge for what has been an unlived life ‘with his head under a cow’? And perhaps also for his father’s own seemingly deliberate cruelties, both on the farm itself and to the son whom he could never love as much as the dead brother.
Things begin to change, when a teenager arrives, the son of his brother’s ex-fiance. Now in his mid-50s, Helmer finally begins to awaken. Despite the very confined setting and the feeling of timelessness in which the characters operate, there is a quick pacing and these small seismic shifts between them which gives the novel perfect momentum.
The judges of the IMPAC award said Bakker’s writing was “wonderful: restrained and clear” and that he “exels at dialogue”. I would definitely agree. The original title in

My eyebrows are naturally very fair. What's the best way to define them? Laura Murphy, Kiltipper Hi Laura, I also have very fair eyebrows and what I like to do is tint them light brown and then I use a eyebrow pencil to fill them in.You can use MACs brow pencil in either Fling or Lingering as they are very natural and easy to use. If you’re not sure about the brow tinting then I would combine a brow pencil with an eye shadow for a defined finish.
I get very rosy cheeks when I am in the least bit warm.Is there any way of concealing this without caking myself in heavy makeup? Sarah Chapman, Saggart Hi Sarah, rosy cheeks can be a sign of dehydration and sensitivity of the skin, so the first thing you need to do is look at using skincare products which can help neutralise and calm the skin. I would suggest that you try an anti-redness treatment cream. Clinque skincare have a very good range, all of which can be worn under your makeup. These products will help camouflage the redness and help nourish your skin. Another tip is to use a more yellow-toned foundation or concealer as it will also help to cover redness in your skin. Since I last wrote the world has changed. For the first time in a long time we have a bit of good news to share that will affect us all. Last week, the Central Statistics Office announced the growth rate for 2011 and it came in at an impressive 1.4% G.D.P. This may not look good but last year all the analysts had predicted that we would only achieve a 0.7% growth rate, or at the highest, 0.9%. To have achieved such an impressive return something has to be happening to the good in our little country.
The Department of Finance also announced last week that the major taxes were all ahead of target – up a whopping 10%, for V.A.T., P.A.Y.E. and Corporation Tax. While you may say,“What has that got to do with me?” The more taxes we create, the less the tax hikes will have to be in the December Budget. What is much more interesting is where these taxes have come from. When you take out from the figures the contributions by Foreign Direct Investments (F.D.I.’s), the real increase came from Domestic Business. For V.A.T. to be up, we must be spending more, for P.A.Y.E. to be up, somebody must be earning more money, or else there are more people employed. For Corporation Tax to be up, businesses must be making more profits.

This is the first time this has been stated by the European Central Bank, they are now beginning to operate as a real Central Bank for Europe and protecting the currency. This will have immediate impact on investment markets across the world, and your pension funds will reflect this. Also, recently, substantial amounts of oil were found off the southwest coast of Ireland. This has the potential to generate tax revenues for the State for years to come. This could change our need to continually increase taxes to solve our long-term budget deficit.
A friend of mine has been touring the country on a business road show talking to business advisors and insurance brokers. He is reporting that they are experiencing an uplift in their businesses.
We also found out that the National Treasury Management Agency went back to what it does best and sold our National Debt in a surprise move. This raised €5.2 Billion of Bonds, much to everybody’s surprise. The benefit of this to us is that we will see the back of the Troika sooner than we expect.

Roses Stop feeding roses now. Feeding will encourage soft growth that won't have a chance to ripen before the winter. It will then be prone to diseases.Deadhead Roses to prevent the production of seed (Rose Hips), which will tire out the plant. Rambler Roses that have finished flowering can be pruned now. Cut the long old stems that flowered this year, but leave non-flowering shoots as these may bloom next year. Clean up fallen Rose and Peony leaves. They can harbour disease and insect pests over the winter if allowed to remain on the ground. If you notice large purple spots on the surface of your rose leaves, it's probably suffering from black spot. Remove infected leaves. Do not put in compost bin. Hedges Finish the trimming of all hedges this month as it allows new growth to ripen before winter. Conifer hedges should get their annual trim this month to prevent them becoming overgrown. Prune individual leaf sprays with secateurs rather than a hedge trimmer or shears, as cutting across the leaf spray on conifers can turn the remaining ends brown. Give Lavender a light trim as the flowers fade - it stops the plant from becoming leggy and helps generate ample flowering next year.
Do not add weeds with mature seed heads to the compost pile. Many weed seeds can remain active and germinate next year when the compost is used. Your Pond ● For a natural look, water plants should be left alone as much as possible. ● Remove Duckweed with a net, since other plants may suffocate if left beneath it. Empty the net on the ground and check for tadpoles and newts which can usually be seen and replaced in the pond. ● Keep the foliage of Water Lilies under control.Just like Duckweed they can suffocate other water plants. ● Regularly check for algae and remove it straight away. ● If the water level falls due to evaporation, fill it back up bit by bit so as not to cool down the pond too much at once. ● If the pond water turns cloudy, check if your oxygenating plants are still there and maybe add some new ones.Water fleas can often also help do the trick. ● Marginal plants will need to be watered regularly too.
Place a rock on the sunny side of the pond. Frogs like to sit and sunbathe in such a place. Butterflies too appreciate a warm spot like this. Dry spells may ensure certain animals such as Hedgehogs, Badgers or Foxes appear during the day to drink from the pond as they struggle to find food. Sunlight encourages pond weed and green water. Try to shade at least part of the surface of the pond. Make sure to check the hanging baskets and containergrown plants every day for water during hot weather and about every second day on moderate summer days. Don't just check the surface...push your finger an inch or two into the soil to be sure there is adequate moisture below throughout the root area.Water them thoroughly each time you water but be careful not to overwater them. Perennial and Biennial plants can be started from seed sown directly into the garden this month or next.

too much exercise is bad for YOU! Exercise is among our most powerful tools for maintaining Health, not only now but also as a method of prevention. Whether it’s simply walking up stairs or creating a rigorous training routine, exercise irrefutably has the power to promote weight loss and immune strength, prevent cardiovascular disease and even boost mental health. Each of these results leads to lowered risk of almost every disease imaginable. But for those of us with the best workout intentions but the busiest lives, the latest research on what consists of a healthy amount of exercise comes as somewhat of a relief. As with many factors related to health, evidence is emerging that the key to optimal results may lie in moderation. According to James O’Keefe, primary author of “Potential Adverse Cardiovascular Effects From Excessive Endurance Exercise”published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings, years of repetitive extreme endurance exercise such as running marathons and triathlons have been shown to cause damage to the heart, including arrhythmia and calcification of the arteries. The recent death by heart attack of Micah True, an ultramarathon runner featured in Christopher McDougal’s book “Born to Run” has brought the attention of exercise scientists and journalists to the concept of excessive exercise and its impact on health and wellness. Mass heart damage in action? One longitudinal study tracked the rate of mortality of all causes in 52,656 American adults who exercised in
varying amounts. Those whose exercise of choice was running were on average nineteen percent less likely to die during the duration of the study. However,in the case of running more is not better. Another study on Danish people found that men who ran between one and two hours a week at a “slow or average pace” extended their longevity by 6.2 years, and women running the same amount and pace extended their longevity by 5.6 years. Moderation in exercise, as in all things Given this information, how are you meant to plan your workouts? I recommend “exercising like a huntergatherer”,which is consistent in its philosophy with the recent rise in adaptation of the Paleo Diet (more on that at a later date) Key principles of exercising like a hunter gatherer include: • Alternating strenuous workouts with easier ones • Cross-training, i.e. Lift, push, sprint, pull, run, swim etc • Exercising strenuously no more than 3-4 times a week • Being outdoors makes all the difference (even if it’s raining) • Not exercising when you’re exhausted from previous workouts • Stretching, mobility, relaxation When it comes to our health and exercise, it’s about finding what’s right for you and more importantly if it’s getting you the results you want!! More is not always the best option. Empower yourself with knowledge from the right people.

TALLAGHT RUGBY CLUB has emerged from the shadows and established itself as a focal point in the local community.
for a while. So I emailed the club captain and was told when training was on next. I turned up and that was that, I played a game the following Saturday.
In an area like Tallaght, with its’ rich history of GAA and soccer clubs, it was always going to be hard for a rugby club to develop. If you had said to someone in the late 90s that you thought Tallaght would be a good place to set up a club devoted to chasing the oval ball you may have been laughed at.
“The best moment was winning the Spencer Pennant in 2010, it was great to get a piece of silverware after such a hard season. It was also the first silverware in the history of the club. Beating Garda RFC in the Jim Byrne cup was a pretty big win as well. Being a prop I was particularly pleased with the scrummaging that day. As a pack we were immense and we pushed them back and robbed countless balls against the head.“
Well rewind back to 2001 and the IRFU start up an initiative designed to introduce rugby in non-traditional areas.Know as“The Tallaght Project”it aimed to bring the game into areas it had never been before. One year later Tallaght Rugby Club came into existence. It initially started running underage teams and focused on introducing the game into schools in the area. 2006 brought about the club’s first senior team and since then they’ve gone from strength to strength. This season they will have two senior teams to compete in the Leinster League Division 3 and at J4 level while also running an Under-19 team and will shortly be starting teams at Under-12 and Under-14. It’s been a bumpy ride to get the club to where they are now. The first few years saw the senior team take some huge beatings and there was certainly a credibility problem as many other clubs thought the Tallaght Project was doomed to fail. However the club has admirably powered on and recently even started picking up silverware. Pre-season training has been underway for the last two weeks with good numbers turning up. Hopes are high and the club is going in the right direction. Kilnamanagh native Ken McGovern joined the club three years ago. He initially established himself at the club as a prop but converted to hooker two seasons ago with great success. This season he will be club captain. “The reason I joined Tallaght was it was my local club,”he said. “I dwelled on the idea of going back playing rugby
When it comes to hopes for the new season Ken added: ”To finish in the top 3 in the League would be the best. We should be looking for promotion, I believe we can definitely challenge. We let ourselves down badly last season so I’m hoping we will improve this year.” For loacl people thinking about joining the club Ken is encouraging. He said:“Tallaght Rugby Club is a community club and everyone is welcome to come down to training, even if they have never played before. “ Many of our players only took up the sport recently but they adapted quickly to the new game. Regardless of experience or fitness levels, everyone who’s interested is welcome to train with us.” The senior men’s team train on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Ballymana lane training ground in Kiltipper. Training starts at 7pm sharp while the women’s team train on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7pm in Ballymana lane. Tallaght RFC Under-21s and Under-19s are back training Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm and 10.30am on Saturday mornings in Ballymana lane. For more details on joining any of the teams or directions to the training ground, log onto www.tallaghtrugby.com
Club Goals: • To develop a sustainable youth structure within the club • To continue to develop both the men's and ladies sides, with the aim of retaining current members and encouraging new participants to get involved. • For all teams to challenge for honours within their respective leagues and raise the profile of the club.
Club Achievements: • Spencer Cup Champions 2012 • 2012 saw the first Tallaght Ladies team compete in a league • Excellent development work going on within the club, as a number of new coaches attended an IRFU coaching course.

Rovers Dream of a Second Run in Europe Ended By Ekranas
It was disappointment for Shamrock Rovers in the Champions League in July as they exited the competition at the very first hurdle The difference for Rovers between this year and last year was stark. In 2011,the Hoops played 12 European games over a six-month period when they became the first Irish side to qualify for the group stages of a major European competition. This time round they entered and exited Europe in just one week, eliminated by Lithuanian champions FK Ekranas. Stephen Kenny’s men currently sit outside of the automatic European qualification places for 2013 as they can’t currently replicate the form that saw the Tallaght
side win back-to-back League of Ireland titles. Rovers had a shot at redemption on their return to Europe in July.Unseeded in the draw, the view was that Rovers had a good opportunity to progress against FK Ekranas. A win in the tie would have set up a trip to play Anderlecht in the third qualifying round of the Champions League. Progress to this game and Rovers would still have had the fallback of being parachuted into the Europa League playoff round - a route Rovers used to maximum advantage last season when they beat Partizan Belgrade.

CIARÁN KILDUFF During the current transfer window, Shamrock Rovers has signed just one player. Pat Sullivan returns to Rovers after a spell travelling However, the reappearance of Ciarán Kilduff in the Rovers squad in late July feels like a new signing. The six foot three striker has been injured for most of this season with a problem with his foot and the Hoops have missed his presence. Kilduff began his League of Ireland career with the Hoops and was the under 21 Player of the Year for Rovers in 2006. Kilduff should bring additional firepower to the Rovers attack, an attack that has scored more goals than any other team in the league so far this season. The 23-year-old scored six league goals last season on his return to Rovers. That was following a very successful spell with UCD where he scored 29 goals in 63 league appearances. Kilduff came off the bench in Europe in the away leg against Ekranas in Lithuania and was also a second half substitute in the away win over Derry City.
As it turned out Rovers couldn't break down an Ekranas team that had lost three of their most influential players due to financial issues in the run up to the game. The Hoops should have carried a first leg lead having dominated the game in Dublin. In the last quarter of that match, Rovers created a string of chances, none of which were converted and Ekranas left Tallaght Stadium the happier team with a 0-0 draw. Rovers were left to rue those first leg misses when they travelled to Lithuania for the second leg four days after another 0-0 draw with Bray in the Airtricity League. 250 or so Shamrock Rovers fans travelled to the game to support their team in green and white. Rovers lined out in a 4-1-4-1 formation that had proved very effective in Europe last season. The concession of a goal, however,in first half injury time seemed to unsettle Rovers. Ekranas doubled their lead on 63 minutes and, were it not for Oscar Jansson who pulled off a number of excellent second half saves, the scoreline may have been worse. As it was, Gary McCabe scored a 92nd-minute penalty, which proved to be small compensation for Rovers. Three days later and the European wounds still very fresh, Rovers faced a daunting trip to Derry. It was a spirited Rovers performance and they left the Bogside with all three points thanks to Ronan Finn’s 54th-minute strike from outside the area. The result went someway to relieving the pressure on manager Stephen Kenny. He will have been pleased to see his team win twice away from home against Derry, the club he managed for two spells. Kenny will be hoping that his team can build on the win in Ulster as they face into August and a couple of crucial Monday evening fixtures in Tallaght. Rovers will play Limerick in the EA Sports Cup semi final on Monday August 6 and a week later will play current league leaders Sligo Rovers.
