The band have come a long way in the past few years and are working on their third album, which we can't wait for, while Niamh is also doing some radio DJing. In other news we speak to Andy Halpin about his book, a precious memory of his wife, Annette, a well-known woman around Tallaght who worked tirelessly for her community but who sadly passed away in 2009. Movie fans will love the interview with Clive Owen who stars in new film Shadow Dancer out at the end of the month. New Garden for Children’s Hospital DELIGHTED youngsters at The National Children’s Hospital have a beautiful outdoor garden to enjoy thanks to the generosity of The Square Shopping Centre and many other local people and companies. The garden, which has a stage, a storytelling booth, an art and craft area as well as a chill out zone and customized fish tank was designed by Dermot Bannon and will be subject of his show‘Room to Improve’on RTE this Autumn. The Square kindly donated €10,000 to the project which will allow young patients to enjoy fresh air and find respite from their medical care. Speaking about the project at the hospital,Ciara O’Grady, Director of Fundraising and Events said:“From the outset we have relied on fundraising activity and public support to drive this project. We are so grateful to all the tradespeople who volunteered their time and expertise for free to help build this outdoor garden. “Furthermore, we appreciate the generosity of countless suppliers and corporate donors whose contributions have made it possible for us to achieve our goal. For most children and their families a stay at hospital can trigger anxiety and distress. This new outdoor play space will lift young patients’spirits by allowing them get fresh air and help make their overall stay at the hospital a little more fun.” The concept behind the garden design originated from Dermot’s observation of children’s love of parks and open air play spaces. The abundance of wood and plants as

well as a strong focus on natural light combines to bring the garden theme to life. When developing ideas for the design, Dermot had to consider that the area needed to appeal to a wide range of age groups from toddlers through to early teens. With this in mind he introduced a number of individual circular play areas called ‘Play Pods’. Each Play Pod has a specific function and it is this diversity that allows each child to find a space that suits them best. Children are encouraged to bring their own toys, games and books out to the garden and once there, they can make it their own. The garden also houses a 6.5 square metre customised mosaic. The multicoloured mosaic was created over a five-week period by hospital staff and local Transition Year students under the supervision of community-based artists Katy and Karim Seddiq. The design for the mosaic is based on elements of nature including air, light, water, plants and stars. Commenting on the mosaic, Play Specialist at the hospital, Catherine Garland said:“We wanted to include a feature that teenagers would appreciate and decided that a bright and colourful mosaic would fit the bill. The design, though based on nature, is abstract which means everyone can interpret it differently." The Square’s Commercial Manager Cathryn McMenamy added:“The project is fantastic and will mean so much to so many, we are delighted to have helped.”

Memories of the late and much-loved Tallaght community worker, Annette Halpin, have been kept alive in a book by her husband of 44 years. Titled From Bray To Eternity the book is a memoir of Andy Halpin’s life with his late wife Annette. Many people in Tallaght will remember her as a caring community worker with South Dublin County Council and a volunteer for many years with Tallaght Welfare Society (now Trustus) and the Women’s Contact Centre. In 1991 she was named Tallaght Person of theYear and was also a talented musician/composer. Following her untimely death in 2009 her family wished to do something to honor her memory so in conjunction with South Dublin County Council they set up the“Annette Halpin Memorial Award for Young Musicians.”The award is made to young people from around the county in an effort to support their musical development. Since 2010 the award has been presented three times, most recently a few weeks ago.

There was great news for Tallaght commuters last week when An Bord Pleanala gave the go ahead for the Red and Green LUAS lines to finally be joined up.It had been feared that due to the downturn in the economy this much hoped for project would never happen. Minister for Transport Tourism and Sport Leo Varadkar said local commuters in this area will be better connected with Dublin City by the LUAS BxD, a 5.6km line that will link the Green line from Sandyford to St Stephen’s Green with the Red line from Tallaght to Connolly Station. The lines will meet up at O’Connell Street and will then run to Parnell Square, Broadstone, Phibsborough and Cabra.

Work on the new link-up will begin next year, with around 800 jobs to be created. The cost of the project is planned to be in the region of €370m and passenger services are expected to start in 2017. The Dublin Chamber of Commerce said the project would be a vital part of the public transport network for this region that will benefit commuters, shoppers and tourists. "The development of this Luas line is a ‘missing link’ for public transport in the region as a whole," said Gina Quinn, Dublin Chamber Chief Executive. "Luas BxD will join the Luas lines but also link the north and south side of Dublin city centre in an important way which will improve life for commuters, shoppers, and tourists. "When we link up our transport network more effectively, we give passengers greater options on where they travel to.” The new link-up will offer an end to end journey time of just 24 minutes and is expected to attract an additional 8 million passenger journeys on Luas each year – a 25% increase. The scale of this increase underlines the vital importance of linking the Luas lines and opening up new options for Luas passengers and suburban and mainline rail passengers.

“Customers will be able to get on the Luas at Tallaght and with just one change, get out at the new DIT campus or at Trinity College,” Minister Varadkar said.

The Luas BXD project was first announced in 2005 as part of the Transport 21 investment strategy for transport in Ireland, which also included Metro North and Dart Underground.

“When complete, Dublin will have an integrated rail and light rail network that is the norm in other modern cities. For the first time,it will be possible to get a train in Maynooth or Leixlip and get out in Dundrum or Sandyford with just one change.”

The Government then announced last November, in the Infrastructure and Capital Investment 2012-16 programme, that Luas BxD would be the only one of the three major transport projects that would get the go-ahead before 2016.

The book came about after Andy began doing a small bit of writing following Annette’s passing, as a way to keep the memory of his wife fresh in his mind. Initially he had no intention of ever writing a book.“I wanted to bring Annette back into my life again and keep her there. One of the ways I tried to do this was by writing. I tried to remember and write down on paper how our life together began,”he said. As he started remembering and writing more from their life together he thought about putting it all together as a book which would tell the story of their life from the moment they met at the foot of Bray Head until Annette’s passing in April 2009.He decided to call it“From Bray to Eternity.” In order to keep the Memorial Award going in memory of Annette, Andy decided to publish his book and donate the proceeds to the bursary. “I’ve tried to present the reader with an honest and entertaining account of the many high points, and indeed the low points that we,as a couple, encountered and surmounted over the course of the 44 years we were together,”he said. “All the profits will be donated to the bursary, which I would love to be able to keep going in memory of Annette.”“From Bray to Eternity” is available in all local bookshops and is priced at €20. All proceeds go to “The Annettte Halpin Memorial Award for Young Musicians.”

New Garda Superintendent For Tallaght AFTER five months a new Garda Superintendent started in Tallaght at the end of last month. The appointment of Superintendent Peter Duff has been very much welcomed by the people of the locality after Eamonn Dolan retired in February. Prior to taking over in Tallaght Supt Duff was the Superintendent in Ennis, Co. Clare. Supt Duff brings a lot of experience to the role, having worked in Blanchardstown, Clondalkin and West Dublin previously, which are all very busy urban centres like Tallaght .He has vast policing experience, including in community policing and, he told InTallaght, that he is delighted with his new role.

Supt Duff, who has been a member of An Garda Siochana since 1990, and became a Superintendent in June 2010,is married with three children. “I think Tallaght sometimes gets unfairly treated by the media, 99 per cent of the population are law abiding people who would only be in their local station when applying for a drivers licence or passport.

“It’s a massive area – as a stand alone it’s comparable to cities like Galway and “I’m looking forward to working in Limerick and I’m really looking forward to Tallaght and getting to know the area.I’m working here with my colleagues and the a Northside Dubliner myself and I’ve local community.” previously worked in Clondalkin and

Hi Niamh, how’re things with you? How did you meet the rest of the band? You live in Tallaght but you’re not from here originally? With two great albums under your belt how do you think the band have changed musically? You spent some of your youth in Scotland? When can fans expect your next album? Did you always have ambitions to be a singer? How have you guys changed as people? What music influenced you growing up? Who are listening to at the moment? All great, we just did the Independence Festival in Cork last weekend and had a great time.

I met two of the lads first when I was doing volunteer work at the St Patrick’s Day Festival. We were into the same music and so we decided to give it a go.

Yes I live in Firhouse and I really enjoy it. I’m from Rialto originally but have always had loads of family and friends living in Tallaght so I know the area really well. I love living here, the media make it out to be worse than it is, but there are loads of really good areas here.

The first album Carry the Meekwas more guitar driven. Then on our secondWhite Fox we worked on melodies, on our vocals, we’ve grown as musicians. We use other instruments like ukulele, banjo, and synth. We stripped the noise back to become more melodic.

Yes that’s right, I was there for about 12 years before moving back to Dublin. I studied performing arts over there and was in a band, that’s when I decided this is what I wanted to do.

We’re currently working on number three. We’re all sending demos to each other, I’m teaching myself how to play the guitar. This album feels like a second album though because the first one happened so quickly!

Yes I’ve kind of always wanted to be a singer; I was in the church choir when I was young. I was also interested in acting too. There was always lots of music around the house as my uncles were musicians, one uncle played the banjo and the other played the fiddle.

Well we’re a lot more confident with each other. If someone doesn’t like something in a track etc well they’ll say it, as opposed to when we were making the first album nobody would disagree with anyone. Having done two albums already gives you a good feeling.

Well the uncles I told you about were into a lot of Mod stuff, The Who, The The, The Jam so I was listening to all that. Suzanne Vaga sticks out as well, Debbie Harry, Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.Kate Bush would be a hero, my mine one. I love her, the way she’s very respectful of changing her image. Compared to Madonna! You look at Madonna and all her image changes and you just think “oh go away would ya!”

Fiona Apple. I used to be really into her, it’s good to listen to her, to see how it can be done differently. She even uses gravel in a track to get the sound she wants! Also The National and Death Cab For Cutie.

What is your opinion of the Irish Music scene at the moment?

I think at the moment it’s the best it’s ever been because it’s so diverse. A few years ago when we were starting out everyone wanted to be a singer-songwriter, kind of like Damien Rice, now the amount of diversity is amazing. If you go into any live music venue in the country you’re guaranteed to catch some cracking bands.

Is there much rivalry between bands in this country?

There’s great camaraderie between all the bands here because it’s such a small place you can’t be bad mouthing people. It’s different if you’re over in London. Irish bands gave us a hand when we were starting out and now we’re only too happy to do the same to other bands starting out.

Your band mate Podge (McNamee) is known for his outrageous onstage costumes, what is your favorite one he has worn?

My favorite is actually one of my own items! We were playing at the Sea Sessions and he had nothing to wear so I loaned him a red shirt with bat wings. It’s actually really cool! He out does himself sometimes, David Bowie green jumpsuits and stuff! He totally gets into character when he’s dressed up as well.

Ham Sandwich gigs are famous for being lively! You guys really enjoy yourselves on stage?

We like putting on a proper show rather than standing there looking at our feet and just playing the songs. We want people to have a laugh as well as listening to music. We love to get people going, we feed off a party atmosphere, it’s very hard to not be smiling after one of our gigs!

18

What advice would you have for musicians starting out?

If you love it keep going, there are times where it will get hard but if you love it keep going. Also look for good support slots and if you know anyone who is in any way connected to someone in the industry then give them your demo. It’s frighting at the start but stick at it.

Do you enjoy working on Phantom FM?

Yes I absolutely love it. It’s something I’d be very interested in. It came about because Michelle (Doherty) was off and our manager contacted them and said I’d be interested in doing something. It was nerve-racking at the start but now it’s just like going in, listening to music for 3 hours and having a laugh.

So what’s next for you and the band?

The band plays at The Electric Picnic in a couple of weeks which will be amazing as this year we’re on the Main Stage. We’re possibly going to have a very big show in December in Dublin too…we’ll let you know when we know more! For more information on the band, check out their website: www.hamsandwichmusic.com, like them on facebook: www.facebook.com/hamsandwichmusic or follow them on twitter @Ham_Sandwich

wanted to know where it was going to go.It didn’t spread into areas I wasn’t interested in, it was very focused, very tight and it was in really good shape. It was one of those scripts where you didn’t need to do too much to it. So that was the first thing and then I spoke to James and he was so intelligent about the material and obviously had such a strong angle on the way he wanted to do it. So I said yes.

You’ve played British government agents before. Is it a different approach each time?

Oscar Nominated Actor Clive Owen stars as an MI5 agent working in 1990s Belfast in the upcoming thriller Shadow Dancer. It appears you’ve been taking a break from thrillers for the last couple of years. Why were you lured back with Shadow Dancer?

It’s weird, it’s never that conscious. When you look at it, it’s just a series of decisions that were made but I never, ever go,“I don’t want to do this genre now, I want to do this one.” I never make decisions like that. It’s a straight response to a piece of material and who’s directing it and the films that I’ve done in the last few years are just the ones I responded to–and I responded to Shadow Dancer.

What were your views on the BritishIrish conflict as a young man, living in the UK at the time the film is set?

Well, obviously I grew up with it being part of our lives and that threat being in the air and every night hearing some report on the news about the Troubles in Northern Ireland. I actually went to Belfast during that time.I did a play and stayed in Belfast for a week during the Troubles and it was rough, it was a war zone and it was only when I went into

the production office for this film and saw all the pictures they’d put on the wall from that time that I was like,“Wow, they’ve come a long way, because it’s not that long ago and it was a very different place then.”

Did you feel personally endangered when you were in Belfast at that time?

No, not from the people. I remember going out a bit in the evenings and hanging out. What was disconcerting was what was happening on the streets. You’d walk down the street and the first time this happened I remember thinking that I’d really landed in the middle of something. They do these drills where the vans just pull up and the soldiers all jump out and they hit their positions and the first time I saw that,I seriously thought, I’m in the middle of a situation. It wasn’t.It was just a drill – they were just showing their presence but when you’re not used to seeing that, it’s very disconcerting.

I would argue that in this film it’s not like that, it’s not the clichéd version of the government agent; it’s not the clichéd MI5 guy because very quickly he’s kind of trapped outside of his own world. He’s not included and he’s floating in a strange place. He’s not the obvious, clear-cut government agent. He begins to see that people are doing things around him that he doesn’t approve of.

He’s an honest man but do you think he’s naïve in understanding the dark political games going on around him?

I talked to James about this and, you know, you could have played that part in a very different way. You could have played the tough MI5 guy that bullies the girl into doing it and is tough all the way. I just thought it was much more interesting for him to be genuine at the beginning when she says,“Have you done this before?” and he says,“Yes – and if you do it, I’ll be with you. We do this together.” It’s genuine and then very quickly he realises his superiors are prepared to compromise her and he gets a conscience – and I think that’s very believable. You take a young girl like that, with a kid, and you throw her into that dangerous situation and it’s your responsibility and then somebody is prepared to say, “Well, just leave her, let her fry.”As one of the other characters says to him,“The reason I’m where I am is because I’m prepared to make these tough decisions and you’re not.”I don’t necessarily think that’s lacking in smartness. If anything I think his problem is that he starts to care a little and that’s probably not great.

In that respect, do What was the you think he’s more biggest attraction for innocent than Colette you in deciding to towards the end? take the role? I was really impressed with how tight the script was. I thought it was really lean, economical; I loved the premise; from the minute it started, I was gripped and

In some ways, yes I do. I think he genuinely develops a conscience about her plight and starts to actually care, which is surprising because there’s another version of this kind of film where that would never happen. He’d be the tough MI5 guy all the way.

21

Doesn’t he need the harder attitude thoughbecause the other side isn’t playing ‘fair’, or by the rules?

I think what’s interesting about this film is that it’s not judgmental. I don’t think it’s totally condemning. It’s a human drama, it’s showing that everybody to a certain extent is trapped in this movie. She goes home to her family, you look at their environment, you look where they’re living, you look at what’s going on, in the same way that I am on my side.Suddenly I’m in a position where I’m trapped. It’s a difficult situation, they were difficult times, and I think it’s an exploration of people grappling with that as much as anything else.

Have you ever found yourself in a similar situation to Mac where you’ve given someone your word and have to stand by it no matter what the cost?

Only when I’ve said yes to a film! I can’t think outside of my career when I’ve had to do that but yes, you often have to do that: give somebody your word. “Are you in Clive?”“Yes, I’m in – you have my word!” I don’t like to give my word and not stay true to it. I think it’s important.

It’s jokingly referred to as ‘The Departure Lounge’ as 16 of its regular visitors passed away over the years but there are still over a dozen men who frequent renamed Cathryn’s Corner in the Square and have done for 22 years. Just recently 12 of those men turned out to speak to InTallaght about the two decades spent in the centre, chatting and laughing while their wives do the shopping and explain why they continue to do so every single week. There are stories in this corner like you wouldn’t believe, from those of childhood friendships – two of the men sat beside each other at school – to tales of loss, some who had lost wives and children or even grandchildren, but it’s clear from the outset that not only are these men friends – they are each others support group too. Paddy Byrne, the ‘chairman’ from Perrystown said: “We’ve been coming here since day one. You will usually see people gathered here most mornings but Tuesdays and Thursdays are the most popular days. “We just sit here while those of us whose wives are still thankfully here do the shopping and we talk about everything from women and football to politics, the social welfare and our entitlements as well as the old days. Over the years we have found connections to each other we never knew existed whether it was through family or old friends.

“We joke about it being The Departure Lounge because many of our good friends have passed on but we keep their memories alive right here every week.” Willie Murphy from St Aengus Parish worked in both Urney’s, for 28 years, and the County Council, for 21 years.A pioneer he comes to The Square every week. A well-known member of the Glenasmole Amateur Dramatics he has played the likes of The Bull McCabe’s son in The Field and Jockser in Juno and The Peacock. “I’ve been here from the start,” he said “and I’ll be here until the end.” Bancroft’s Aidan Thomas, who is a well-known face in Tallaght said: “The whole of society is about community.Back in the day everyone cared for each other – no matter what, whether it was someone sick or in trouble. If you haven’t got community you haven’t got anything – but that’s exactly what we have right here.” The Square has been welcoming the men since it first opened it’s doors and over the years they have sat on a wall on the concourse or whatever they could find. In 2007 a special bench was put in, in memory of long-time friend Paddy Rafter who was one of the first to take up residence in the corner. Just lately that wooden bench has been replaced with plush leather sofas allowing enough room for everyone to gather at the one time should it work out like that. Paddy Starrs, who turned up late on the day and got a rubbing from the men for it, joked:“We waited years for these cushioned seats – we were forever complaining about the other ones, now they’ll never get rid of us!” The characters in this corner are fascinating – there’s former Garda Bert Carey who originally came from John B Keane’s Lyrea Crompane but is in Tallaght 40 years. There’s ChristyDoyle from Old Bawn who played for Shels and was a senior international player.Gerry McCord who looks after the Oratory in The Square, but who was absent on the day, played for Pats while Phillipa McDermott the late poet can also be counted as a regular of the past. There are many men have come and gone over the years. Even wives like Paddy Broe’s Phyllis but whether you are still about or passed on one thing is for sure – you won’t be forgotton.

Twenty-two excited children turned up to The Square recently for our Mini Rovers Camp. The event took place on Friday, August 3, in one of the empty units on Level 2 and was a great success. Trainer Mick Fitzsimons headed up the two-hour session with help from son, Mick, Luke Griffiths and Paddy McQuaid.

The children,a mix of boys and girls, were taken through their paces on several challenges and were over the moon when Hooperman turned up and joined in. The icing on the cake however was when players Aaron Green and Graham Gartland dropped by to sign autographs for the excited little footballers. The Square organised bottled water for the children who all, also got Burger King vouchers for ice cream to cool down after the event. It is hoped that a second camp will take place before the schools start up again.

The centre was alive with dancers recently when So Little Crew put on a show. The event, which was a fundraiser for the group, which was heading off to Las Vegas to compete in the World Hip Hop Championships, drew great support as they performed for four hours on the concourse level. The 17 energetic dancers, supported by Dance Magazine, Ireland’s Premier magazine dedicated to all genres of dance, kept the crowds entertained consistently and were thrilled to go away with money towards their journey.

There was straw everywhere and fresh food with people dressed up in character all day long. The atmosphere was fantastic with happy faces all round and one thing is for sure - the Pet Farm will definitely be back.

The US Deli has taken up residence on Level 2. The American stlye sandwich shop offers quality meats and sandwich dressings which will blow you away. The store is a delicious option for lunch in the centre. __________________________

After five months in operation on Level 3 of The Square, Newbridge Silverware has so much to offer. With an official opening by TV legend Gay Byrne and the current Rose of Tralee, Tara Talbot, the new store got off to a great start and has been a welcome addition and a pleasant shopping experience from day one. Offering everything from jewellery to handbags the shop is on trend and with its customers in mind at all times it will soon introduce a Christmas pay-off scheme which should ease the financial burden on those looking to get a head start on their gift list. Proprietor Darran Walsh said:“Like all of the tenants in The Square we have been making the most of the new and vibrant energy which has been coming through the mall from the centre management. “It has been an opportunity to coincide with this vibrancy, our own positivity and on the back of that things are working well.”

The coming weeks will see the introduction of the Christmas decorations into the store which will include the Limited Edition for 2012. This year the sales of the decorations will also have an impact on one of the country’s most relevant charities, The Make A Wish Foundation, when a percentage from each decoration sold with go towards the cause. Shopping for Christmas is also being tackled early as the store introduces a deposit and pay-off scheme whereby customers can chose their gifts, have them put by and pay off them little by little. Darran said:“The idea is to ease the pressure on people. I know it seems very early to be talking about Christmas but most of us need to get a head start and save,in a way this is the same thing but it eases people’s minds to also know that they’ve chosen something so that element of the job is also done!” The Maureen O’Hara, Grace Kelly and Vintage Collections are but a few available in the Newbridge shop which is famed for its silver, pearl and stone combinations. The store, which is directly opposite the escalator as you come up from beside Cathryn’s Corner on the concourse, is brightly lit, air conditioned and always welcoming. For more information on the Christmas scheme just ask in store.

Single Glitters Without Doubt BEFORE I begin this review I better make it known that I’m a massive fan of The Cribs and think they are the most underrated band in the world. With that out of the way here are my thoughts on their latest single Glitters Like Gold. For those of you who haven’t heard of them yet, The Cribs are a rocking indie band from Yorkshire consisting of twin brothers Ryan and Gary Jarman and their younger brother Ross on drums. Despite producing some amazing work in the last 10 years, they have never quite broken into the mainstream, and hooray for that! Up until last year they counted ex-Smiths legend Johnny Marr as a member, the guitarist having played alongside the brothers for four years. Hardcore fans however had criticized the direction the band had moved in musically since Marr had come on board. There was a feeling that The Cribs had moved away from the spikier, punkier roots evident in their first two albums. Any worries of a post Johnny Marr meltdown can be put aside with the release of Glitters Like Gold, the second single taken from The Cribs' fifth studio album, In The Belly Of The Brazen Bull. The lads are back on top form with a potential indie classic full of volume and aggression. Featuring an opening intro with plenty of feedback and a melodic riff in the middle, Glitters Like Gold is a track that hardcore indie fans will love.To me it has an early 90s American indie band feel to it.The signature catchy Cribs chorus is back and the playful guitar melody and lyrics are almost uplifting. I enjoyed the single and recommend it as an antidote to a lot of the awful pop dross polluting the airwaves. The Cribs play from the heart while also coming across as good, honest lads whenever interviewed.Long may they continue in fine fettle.

THE ALUSKAS is a three-piece band which has just finished its debut album Draw. If you like blues, rock n roll or psychedelic music then you will love this album as it combines all three into a very fine record. Opening track Backwater Woods is a fun, catchy uplifting tune that transports you to the American Deep South and sets down a marker for what follows. Plenty of the lads influences can be heard in the next three tracks Lurleen, Sorry’s Not A Bullet Proof Vest”and Twlight, but the reimagining of these influences is impressive and they pull it off well. Things get a bit more introspective with Cobwebs and The Light, the latter dealing with failing to realise dreams and living in “broken times with hollow dreams.” This is followed by the instrumental “Prism” and “Skin and Bones”; a bluesy tirade against someone who just

can’t get their act together. My own favorite track on the album “Where We Started Out” comes next. It’s a great piece of feel good music which would sound good blaring out of the speakers in your car while driving on a hot summer day. Overall I really enjoyed the album. It is a really impressive start from a band who sound like they’ve put in the hard graft to produce a quality piece of work. Keep an eye on InTallaght for an interview with the band very soon.

The Nest Learning Thermostat helps you to stop wasting energy, while providing control using your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac Walk into a big DIY store and you'll find a huge selection of thermostats, with basic programmable units typically selling for as little as €40. Or you could go online and pay €249 — for the Nest, a high-tech thermostat for the iPhone set but is there any reason to spend so much on a thermostat? Nest co-founder Tony Fadell, the lead designer of Apple's iconic iPods and iPhones, before leaving the company in 2008, thinks well-heeled consumers will buy into the concept. He conceived the Nest as a slick-looking alternative to typically boring, old-fashioned thermostats, with Internet connectivity that allows it to be controlled remotely, and enough smarts to automatically save homeowners money. Using the web or an Android or Apple mobile app, you can adjust your home's temperature from bed or an outside location. The same interface can be used to easily program a schedule for temperature changes, and the Nest can also pick up on your habits and automatically make money-saving adjustments. It has a sensor that tries to tell when the house is typically empty and will save energy while you're away and if you keep setting

the house a little cooler or warmer before bed every night, the Nest will eventually sense that pattern and repeat it automatically. Fadell argues that while the Nest is sold at a premium price, it will eventually pay for itself once energy savings are factored in and he bets there are plenty of homeowners willing to pay more to have the snazzy looking object on their wall,as opposed to a boring white or beige box. "There's a new generation of people who appreciate higher-end products, they understand what they're buying and they understand the value that they bring," he said in an interview earlier this year. Whether the Nest is worth €250 depends, of course, on a consumer's budget and tendencies to go for the latest and greatest in expensive gadgetry. For those who already have a programmable thermostat and

diligently set it to reduce their energy consumption whenever possible, upgrading to the Nest may not provide any long-term savings.Homeowners who could still save some money by better controlling their energy usage may find that the Nest is a luxury that will eventually pay for itself, whether it's a year or more down the road and some, particularly those who love their iPhones and iPads, will find the premium to be paid for the Nest's Apple-like design and web connectivity is more than worth it — unless they foresee a future in which they're upgrading their thermostat every few years like their smartphone. The Nest is currently available online from the Apple Store and you are sure to find it in stores nationwide pretty soon.

The Hitman faithful can breathe a tentative sigh of relief – a lot of what made the franchise a hit is still in place Hitman: Absolution follows Agent 47, a cold-blooded assassin, who takes on his most dangerous contract to date. Betrayed by those he once trusted – and now hunted by the police – he suddenly finds himself at the centre of a dark conspiracy and must embark on a personal journey through a corrupt and twisted world. Boasting a cinematic story, distinctive art direction and highly original game design. Contrary to what outsiders may conclude from its title, the Hitman series' principle draw has never been solely about killing people. Players were drawn to the Hitman games because of the myriad of methods open to them in their execution of Agent 47's targets. The genius of IO Interactive, was it probably realised very early on that if they constructed each of 47's contract kills with only one possible way of solving them, the replay value of their games would be severely diminished. IO offered each level up as some sort of lethal puzzle box contained in an open-ended structure, allowing the player to tackle it in any way they saw fit. Players could use disguises and syringes filled with poison to dispatch targets. They could gerry-rig items in their environments to make their target's death look like an accident. They could even charge in with both guns blazing, although this wasn't advisable because Agent 47 wasn't bulletproof and taking the direct approach was a quick way to put him in the morgue. Those who delighted in Hitman's past iterations have been concerned by the prospect of Hitman:Absolution.Early previews seem to have repositioned Agent 47 as an action

hero whose prowess with firearms negates any need to sneak about in the darkness. Early previews show the bald, bar-coded assassin blasting multiple opponents in slow-motion, using a new "instinct" mechanic to see through walls and tackling rooms filled with enemies head on with a fire axe. If you're new to the franchise, it all looks very exciting. If you're a long-time fan, it looks like a travesty. Well, the Hitman faithful can breathe out a tentative sigh of relief, as in my hands-on time with Absolution, I learned that a lot of what made the franchise a hit is still in place – at least, it was in the level I was allowed to play.

The DS3 is Citroen's entry into the premium supermini segment and offers buyers a stylish alternative to the MINI hatchback and Alfa Romeo MiTo.

The 89bhp diesel engine is good around town and offers incredibly low running costs, while the 148bhp petrol engine makes for an exciting drive but could prove costly to run.DSport models get stiffer suspension, making the car a bit less comfortable to drive but making it far sportier and giving the DS3 far more grip. The steering is lighter and easy to use on all models though. Limited edition DS3 Racing models get engineering tweaks to improve handling and cut the 0-62mph time to 6.9 seconds.

It's based on the Citroen C3 but offers a more upmarket cabin and a more exciting driving experience. Engines range from an efficient 89bhp diesel, which has very low CO2 emissions, to a turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine with 148bhp which offers hot-hatch thrills. There's also a range-topping DS3 Racing model, but only 200 examples were sold in the UK and Ireland. All variants get a spacious, stylish and luxurious cabin making the DS3 a fantastic all-rounder.

The DS3's cabin is well built and there's plenty of luxurious soft touch materials. There are a couple of scratchy plastics but they tend to be hidden out of the way. It gets a five star Euro NCAP rating thanks to six airbags, stability control and ABS coming as standard on all models. Citroen models of old weren't renowned for their reliability but there has been a definite improvement since then and there have been no reported problems on the DS3 to date.

With the softer suspension that comes on all models apart from DSport cars, the DS3 is extremely quiet and comfortable making it as at home on the motorways as it is in town. Even DSport models are comfortable, but those looking for comfort over performance should steer clear. The driving position is good and there is plenty of adjustability available on the steering wheel and seats.

There's less space between the front and rear wheels on the DS3 than there is on its rivals. That limits knee room in the rear but adults will still comfortably fit in the back. There's more space in an Alfa Romeo MiTo and less in a MINI hatchback however the Citroen trumps them both for boot space boasting an impressive 285 litres while the seats can be folded down to make more boot room. The entry-level 1.4-litre DSign model is very affordable but buyers might want to specify extras like air-conditioning and alloy-wheels. Aside from those things you'll find cruise control, electric windows and steering-wheel mounted audio controls are as standard. DSport models are expensive, but there's no need to specify any optional extras. The Ultra Pretsige models get classy 'watchstrap' leather seats and very high equipment levels but carry an even larger premium. Prices start at â‚Ź17,840 with annual road tax from â‚Ź160 on the diesel varient.

SEAT to invest â‚Ź20m in Irish push SEAT, the Spanish car brand in Ireland, sponsors of Shamrock Rovers here in Tallaght, is set to undergo a radical overhaul of its operations and customer offering as it targets market share of 3.5pc by 2017. Armed with a E20m investment by its parent company SEAT SA, and led by a new management team in Ireland which is spearheaded by Adam Chamberlain former Head of Sales and Marketing of Volkswagen Ireland, SEAT Ireland looks set to finally step from the shadows of its bigger sibling brands within Volkswagen Group.Following a significant review of its model range, SEAT Ireland has over the last six months withdrawn approximately 45pc of its previous portfolio as it's seeks to refine its customer offering. This coupled with a series of new model launches between now and the end of 2012 including the Ibiza, Mii, Toledo and Leon will it is anticipated result in almost 90pc of sales for SEAT Ireland in 2013 originating from these new models. Key to the success of this new model range for SEAT Ireland is the introduction of a new competitive price structure, the company said. Representing an investment of approximately E4m this new pricing structure came into effect from August 1st and will be a welcome boost to SEAT Irelands 18 dealerships around Ireland. This will result in an increased value offer for motorists of between 5pc and 15pc on many SEAT models through price reductions and increased specification. New SEAT customers will also benefit from 3 years warranty and roadside assistance as standard from August. In addition SEAT Ireland has via Volkswagen Bank access to a range of compelling finance offers based on extremely competitive interest rates enabling prospective customers complete new car purchases.To-date in 2012, SEAT customers have already accessed E3,000,000 in finance packages and with a number of new packages set to be unveiled for 2013 this figure looks set to more than double by year end. Commenting SEAT Ireland Brand Director Adam Chamberlain said, "This is an exciting time for SEAT Ireland, historically the brand has always remained somewhat below the radar but now thanks to this ambitious development programme and a fantastic new range of cars, I believe that Irish motorists are going to become a lot more interested in what SEAT has to offer."

Man United kick off a weak debut Shares in Manchester United priced below expectations and were essentially flat in early trading today, a disappointing stock market debut for the world's most famous soccer club and most valuable sporting team. Manchester United sold 16.7 million shares as planned, but at a price of $14 each, below the expected range of $16 to $20.The stock rose 5 cents in initial trades on the New York Stock Exchange and then flattened out. A mystery to most Americans but a household name in most of the world, the club listed on a U.S.exchange after pulling a planned IPO in Singapore earlier this year. The offering valued the 19-times English champions at $2.3 billion but shaved as much as $100 million off the proceeds that had been expected for the team and its owners. The $233 million ultimately raised in the IPO will be split equally between the 134-year-old club and its owners, the Florida-based Glazer family, owners of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers NFL team among other interests. The loss of as much as $50 million in expected proceeds for the club will be a blow as it copes with a heavy debt burden and seeks to buy new players, who cost tens of millions of dollars each. United had debt of 423 million pounds ($661 million) at the end of March. A group of United fans who are campaigning for greater involvement in the ownership of the club jeered the Glazers. "It would seem all the analysis of the true valuation was correct; the Glazers and their advisers were being far too ambitious - or perhaps greedy - and the true value of the shares should be around $10 rather than the $20 the Glazers were seeking," said Duncan Drasdo, chief executive of the Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST). "It means less money coming into the club to pay down the Glazers' debt and, more annoyingly, the Glazers still take further money out of the club for their own personal means," he added.MUST is calling for the Glazers to sell and allow fans to play a greater role in the club's ownership. The Red Knights, a group of wealthy fans including Goldman Sachs head of asset management Jim O'Neill, weighed a bid for United two years ago but were put off by the price. The Glazers bought United for 790 million pounds in a highly leveraged deal in 2005, taking it private after 14 years on the London Stock Exchange. Some fans argue that the cost of the debt has forced up ticket prices for the club, which draws sellout crowds of around 76,000 at its Old Trafford Stadium and claims 659 million followers across the world. They also say repayments have hindered the team's ability to compete with big-spending rivals on the pitch. The Premier League season begins in just over a week, when United fans will be able to demonstrate their feelings over the club's ownership. MUST has called for a boycott of the club's sponsors over the IPO.United's commercial appeal was underlined last week when it signed a $559 million deal with General Motors to have the Chevrolet brand on its famous red shirts from 2014. United suffered a rare barren season last year, losing their Premier League title to crosstown rival Manchester City, whose owner,a member of Abu Dhabi's ruling family, has pumped 800 million pounds into reviving what had long been United's poor relation.

Saab owner hits GM with $3bn lawsuit Keeping the trend of the high amount of business news coming from the automotive industry this month Saab made the headlines filing a $3bn lawsuit against GM.Saab had been in takeover talks with a Chinese firm and filed for bankruptcy in December when those talks failed. GM, which owned part of Saab, did not want Chinese carmakers accessing Saab's technology licences. The US firm called the allegations “baseless”. It told the BBC:“We have reviewed the complaint, and it is completely without merit. We will vigorously defend the company.” Spyker Chief Executive Victor Muller (pictured above) said: “There was no situation that required GM's consent but nevertheless, they took a public stance. “They abused their position to coerce us into bankruptcy,” he added. Spyker, the Dutch carmaker, filed its lawsuit in a US court in the state of Michigan recently. GM has 20 days to respond. “GM's actions had the direct and intended objective of driving Saab Automobile into bankruptcy, a result of GM’s tortuously interfering with a transaction between Saab Automobile, Spyker and Chinese investor Youngman that would have permitted Saab Automobile to restructure and remain a solvent going concern,” Spyker said.

Golden Robert Roberts A TALLAGHT-based coffee company is celebrating after winning gold at a major competition in the UK recently. Robert Roberts, the Irish tea and coffee company which is located off the Broomhill Road, has been awarded a three-star gold Great Taste Award for its Java Beans Coffee, and a further nine gold awards at the Great Taste Awards organised by the Guild of Fine Food. The three-star gold award is the highest accolade in the international Great Taste Awards. All foods in the competition are judged by at least three different judging panels at three different venues. The judging panels consist of industry experts ranging from chefs to restaurant critics and fine food retailers. This year only 120 products out of 8,800 received the three-star award, with Robert Roberts Java Beans being the only coffee product to receive a three-star gold Great Taste Award since 2010. As well as this the company also received a host of other Great Taste Awards this year for its tea and coffee products including a two-star gold award, and eight one-star gold awards.

"We are delighted with the outstanding results we achieved in the Great Taste Awards this year", said Roisin O'Shea, Marketing Manager at Robert Roberts. "The three-star award is a rare achievement and it builds on the strong track record we have achieved in awards for our fine tea and coffee products over the past number of years. At Robert Roberts, we roast an incredible 458 million Java beans annually at our artisan roasting factory, off the Broomhill Road in Tallaght, and this award is a further endorsement of the quality of our product.” Robert-Roberts Tea and Coffee Company is one of Ireland’s oldest businesses. It has been producing teas and coffees for over 100 years and today accounts for about 25pc of the market in Ireland. This equates roughly to 190 million teabags and 350 tonnes of coffee a year. The company head office and warehouse have been located in Tallaght since 1990 and employs more than 200 people locally.

The Girls At The Weir The first distraction was vertical. Straight down over my head spilled the contents of a tea pot - tea leaves and all - not yet cold. The old woman, in the little house on the weir, was accustomed to using the river for her trash. “Lucky me,” I shouted up at her. “I suppose it could have been your other pot, another time. Don’t you know you cannot pollute the river like that?” But, she was deaf, and just shuffled out of view. I was fifteen years old, and was fly-fishing for trout in the pool below the waterfall on the Dodder River at Orwell.

gathering confidence and the showman in me was taking over. Glancing up from the parabolic curve of the rod, I made sure that the girls were still watching. Then tragedy! With my eye off the water, the leader snagged against a submerged branch and snapped.

Moving over to the other side of the stream, I commenced casting again. Then there came a further distraction. Two St Louis secondary girls with bicycles were peering over the wall at me.

After a while,I glanced towards the parapet and saw that the girls were laughing! How could they? “You silly twits,” I wanted to shout but as before, no sound came out.

Well now, watching girls was another pastime of my age. But,at that moment,I was irritated by the attention. Here was I trying to be a hunter. I was being so stealthy, I imagined that I was as inconspicuous to the fish as a bush. Yet all my precautions might be in vain, as the shadows cast from on high by these lassies could spook the quarry.

After a little while, and in great disappointment,I flopped down on the grassy bank and commenced a week of hating women.

“Get away from there,”I screamed. But it was only quietly - In my head sort of. For really, I was far too shy to speak to females of my own age.

Paddy Conneff is a life-long member of the Dodder Anglers and has served as president. He has also served as President of the Irish Trout Fly Fishing Association, and as Captain of the Irish team in the Four Home Nations International. He fished in all four countries and was twice a member of a victorious Irish Team. He is a member of the Ballyroan Writer’s Circle.

Just then the rod jerked in my hand, and I was stuck into a cart-wheeling fish. Gold coloured with black and red spots, it was easily the biggest fish I had ever hooked but my eye had been half on the girls. So, I felt uneasily that my connection with the trout might not be so secure. The fight went on and on, as the fish careered around, leaping and splashing. Although still on edge, I was

In dead silence, the ripples circled and spread and then disappeared. The great fish was gone, already just a memory. The hissing sound of the water returned, as my legs trembled uncontrollably.

This short story appeared in a collection of “Memories, Stories and Poems to Inspire” called Ireland: The Dawning of the Day, which we mentioned in the last edition. Dr Paul Perry, Poet and Lecturer, MA programme in Creative Writing, UCD decsibes “Ireland: The Dawning of the Day as “an eclectic mix of poetry and prose. There are memories from days of yore, a meeting with Samuel Beckett, biographies and other flights of fancy. In fact, it’s an anthology that is bursting at its seams with surprises and delights. Dip in, you won’t be disappointed.” All proceeds will assist the Active IT Society to develop and run courses for older people in IT and related subjects at an affordable cost in Terenure Enterprise Centre. The Marriage Plot is an absorbing read from the author of The Virgin Suicides. I was very excited when I saw a poster in the window of a bookshop advertising the fact that Jeffrey Eugenides had released a new book. That was last year, but I didn’t get my hands on a copy until a few months ago. I had loved his book Middlesex and had also enjoyed the film made from his book The Virgin Suicides. It's the early 1980s and the country is in a deep recession, and life after college is harder than ever. In the cafés on College Hill, the kids are reading Derrida and listening to Talking Heads but Madeleine Hanna, dutiful English major, is writing her senior thesis on Jane Austen and George Eliot, purveyors of the marriage plot that lies at the heart of the greatest English novels.

As Madeleine tries to understand why it became laughable to read writers like Cheever and Updike, who wrote about the suburbia Madeleine and most of her friends had grown up in, in favor of reading the Marquis de Sade, who wrote about deflowering virgins in eighteenth-century France, real life, in the form of two very different guys, intervenes. There follows plenty of intelligent and intellectual angst as Madeline finds herself in love with Leonard Bankhead, a charismatic loner she meets in a semiotics seminar. Meanwhile, an old friend of Madeline, Mitchell Grammaticus has decided that it should be he that Madeline is dating. Mitchell is your typical nice guy, the boy next door, who I couldn’t help rooting for all along. Eugenides has a wonderful turn of phrase and it really sucked me into the story. Even seemingly banal things like how he describes a hangover captures the imagination: “This seemed to go well for a moment, standing up. Her head felt curiously light, as if hollowed out.But then the blood, draining from her skull like sand from an hourglass, hit a bottleneck, and the back of her head exploded in pain.”

William Deresiewicz of The New York Times Book Review described The Marriage Plot as “Wry, engaging and beautifully constructed” and I couldn’t agree more. Eugenides’ characters may be narcissistic and neurotic but they are believable and in a way quite easy to relate to. The end of college is a confusing time and I think Eugenides believes that we are all as deeply flawed as these three characters. This is a very literary novel, with healthy doses of literature, philosophy, theology, biology and semiotics interspersed through the general plot. At times this can overshadow the emotional impact of the story, but at other times it enhances our understanding of the characters’motivations.I found it to be a really interesting and entertaining book, quite different to Middlesex, but no worse for that fact. About The Author Jeffrey Eugenides is an American Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist and short story writer. He lives in Princeton, New Jersey with his wife, the photographer and sculptor Karen Yamauchi, and their daughter.

I love a strong red colour on my lips. How can I make sure it lasts evenly for the whole evening? Lisa Armstrong, Rathcoole Hi Lisa, a red lip can look amazing but for it to last and look flawless you will have to put extra time in applying it. First I would use a lip primer as this will help hold the lipstick in place. Next is your lip liner. This product is really important as it will give you the structure and definition, ensuring the lipstick doesn't bleed out over your lip line. The final step is to apply your lipstick. Try using a lip brush as you will have more control with the application. If you want the finished look to look like the pros did it, try using a small angled brush and your concealer to outline your lip line and touch up any mistakes or uneven lines.

I find applying eyeliner really difficult.Do you have any tips? Louise O'Toole, Aylesbury Hi Louise, eyeliner can be one of the hardest things to master. Some tips are to apply a pencil eyeliner first then smudge it with a pencil brush to soften the line.Following a line with liquid eyeliner is much easier than trying to create one.You can also try and use an angled brush to apply liner. The trick to using this brush is to ensure the tip of the brush is coated with the product and that there are no clumps of product on it.When using this brush try and place the brush as near to your lash line with the point or tip of the brush facing the inner corner of your eye. Last and most importantly always have cotton buds at hand. Even the pros can make a mistake so if you do, don't worry. Practice makes perfect. Container grown perennials, shrubs and trees can be planted this month.Always take time to properly prepare the soil by mixing generous quantities of peat moss, compost and processed manure with your existing soil. Cuttings If you think you would be interested in propagation, take cuttings from your favourite summer flowering plants. A lot of the material now will be semi-ripe and things like Escallonias, Cotoneasters, Berberis and other evergreens can be propagated at this time. Also, take the time to continue to propagate the tender plants that you would like to see through the winter safely under glass. Take cuttings of tender Perennial, such as Verbenas, ArGyranthemums, Fuchsias, Salvias and Pelargoniums. Dip the cuttings into a hormone rooting compound and insert them into small pots of half and half peat and perlite or peat and silver sand. Water well and keep the cuttings in a cold frame or even on a warm windowsill out of direct sunlight. They should root within six and eight weeks and can then be potted up in multi-purpose compost and overwintered in a heated greenhouse or on a bedroom window. Lawn Don’t forget to make sure your lawn is kept mown and weeded. Towards the end of August is a good time to start feeding and weeding again and to carry out any aeration before the start of autumn. This is a good time to actually do it. Raise the cutting height of the mower.Taller grass cools the roots and helps to keep the moisture in the soil longer with fewer weeds.

Get out those bulb catalogues, have a look and start deciding which bulbs you would like to order or purchase at the garden centres so that you can start planting in late August / September. There are many kinds available including Daffodils, Snowdrops, Crocus and Tulips which all give you a burst of colour early the following year. What is the difference between Herbaceous, Perennial, Biennial, Hardy and Half Hardy annuals? Hardy Annuals – Plant seed, germinate, grow and flower in the same season Half Hardy Annuals – Have to be planted indoors and when frost is gone then can be planted outside. Biennial – Are plants that grow leaves and stems in the first year but do not flower until the following year. Perennial Flowers and Shrubs – These are plants that flower every year but may die back in winter. Herbaceous Plants – Are plants that can grow up to several feet in one year, they can be very colourful and die back to the root stock in winter then grow back again the following year. The fertilizer added to most potting composts only lasts for six weeks as it is washed out every time you water them, therefore you should add a slow release fertilizer like Osmocote, or Growmore, you could also add tomato feed or miraclegrow. Osmocote will last all summer so only has to be put in at the start.

As one of the most dangerous hobbies it is best to take a lot of care while working in your garden. Hopefully some of these tips (very simple and not often followed) could help prevent injury. ● Always wear safety goggles and gloves while working in the garden. ● For long bamboos and thin stakes cover tops with old corks from wine bottles. ● Buy a pair of safety boots or wellingtons with steel toe caps and soles to prevent foot injury. ● Never leave rakes or spades lying in the grass as somebody will walk on them and receive very nasty face injuries. ● If on a ladder or step ladder always get somebody to stand on the end step. ● If using an electric lawnmower or hedge trimmers firstly plug into an outdoor circuit breaker, as cutting the cable by accident could be fatal. ● Do not use chainsaws, this should be left to the professionals. ● Keep patios and decks clean of algae and leaves as they can become very slippy.

Paleo Diet:

Eat Like It’s Two Million Years Ago! The Paleo diet is the healthiest way you can eat because it is the ONLY nutritional approach that works with your genetics to help you stay lean, strong and energetic! Research in Biology, Biochemistry, Ophthalmology, Dermatology and many other disciplines indicate it is our modern diet, full of refined foods, trans fats and sugar, that is at the root of degenerative diseases such as Obesity, Cancer, Diabetes, Heart Disease, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Depression and Infertility. – Robb Wolf A growing number of scientists, doctors and nutritionists have argued that a Paleo lifestyle could benefit human health and even cure chronic diseases. The concept behind the Paleo or Primal diet movement is that our DNA, our genetics, has changed little since Paleolithic era or Stone Age. That means our bodies would work better and with greater efficiency if we ate, exercised and socialised like our prehistoric ancestors. University of California at San Francisco researchers are showing how a modern-day Paleo diet works just as well as statin drugs when it comes to dropping cholesterol levels. So what should you eat? Lean proteins support strong muscles, healthy bones and optimal immune function.Protein also makes you feel satisfied between meals. Fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients that have been shown to decrease the likelihood of developing a number of degenerative diseases including Cancer, Diabetes and neurological decline.

Healthy fats from nuts, seeds, avocados, olive oil, fish oil and grass-fed meat. Scientific research and epidemiological studies show that diets rich in Monounsaturated and Omega-3 fats dramatically reduce the instances of obesity, cancer, diabetes, heart disease and cognitive decline. Health Benefits For most people the fact the Paleo diet delivers the best results is enough. Improved blood lipids, weight loss and reduced pain from autoimmunity is proof enough. Many people however are not satisfied with blindly following any recommendations, be they nutrition or exercise related. Some folks like to know WHY they are doing something.Fortunately, the Paleo diet has stood not only the test of time, but also the rigors of scientific scrutiny. With a very simple shift we not only remove the foods that are at odds with our health (grains, legumes, and dairy) but we also increase our intake of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. At D24Fitness we use the guidelines and variants of Paleo with all our clients/members no matter what their goals, remember this is not a diet it’s simply a healthier way of eating. If you want to improve your energy levels, drop body fat and feel great, while dramatically reducing your chances of ill health and disease, then learn to eat in a way your body is designed to!

A Good Run of Form In August For The Hoops Helps Close The Gap Shamrock Rovers began August with a 2-0 win, over UCD in Belfield, which was secured by goals in either half by Gary Twigg and Gary McCabe. It was a return to goalscoring form for striker Twigg who had failed to score since his goal in Tolka Park in the 3-2 win over Shelbourne back in mid-June. Having won the previous week away in Derry, it was also Rovers’ first back-to-back wins in the league since the opening two games of the Airtricity League season. Rovers followed up the win against UCD with an impressive display in the 4-1 victory against Limerick in the EA Sports Cup semi final. The win propelled Rovers

into the final of the competition that will take place on September 22 in Tallaght Stadium. It was the second time Rovers had defeated First Division leaders Limerick this season following May’s 1-0 win in Tallaght in the FAI Cup. It was a comprehensive win for Stephen Kenny’s men over a Limerick side managed by former Rovers player and manager Pat Scully. The Hoops, who led 1-0 at half time thanks to Sean Gannon’s first senior goal, saw a man

BARBER & SHAVING PARLOUR

TOMMY STEWART Stewart was signed by Shamrock Rovers from Partick Thistle during the recent transfer window. It is a Rovers return for Stewart, who in his previous one-season spell in 2010 with the current champions, played an instrumental part in Rovers’ success that year. The 25-year-old former Northern Ireland under 21 international scored eight league goals for the Hoops in 2010 and formed a great partnership with fellow striker Gary Twigg. His goal on the final night of that season secured Rovers’first league title in 16 years as the Hoops drew 2-2 in a tense game in Bray to win the Airtricity League on goal difference from Bohemians. Stewart also scored the only goal of the game in Europe in the second leg against Bnei Yehuda in Israel. His winner saw Rovers progress 2-1 on aggregate setting up the glamour tie with Juventus in the Europa League qualifying round. The former Linfield striker, a club at which he won two Irish Premier League titles, previously worked with Shamrock Rovers manager Stephen Kenny when they were both with Derry City. The striker has signed a deal that will keep him in Tallaght until the end of the 2013 season.

of the match performance by striker Ciarán Kilduff who scored two second half goals and set up the final goal for Billy Dennehy. It was a new look strikeforce for 2012 for the Hoops as new signing Thomas Stewart (see player profile below) made his first start in Tallaght on his Rovers return. Kilduff has only just come back into the Rovers squad having spent much of the season with a broken foot. The win means Rovers will play two finals in Tallaght Stadium next month. In addition to the EA Sports Cup final, they will play St Patricks CY on September 3 in the Leinster Senior Cup Final. In front of the live TV cameras Monday August 13, the current champions Shamrock Rovers took on the team tipped by many to take their crown, Sligo Rovers. The Hoops came into the game in third place seven points behind league leaders Sligo who had played one game less and that gap remained at the end of 90 minutes. It wasn’t quite a ‘winner takes all’ affair but Sligo left Tallaght the happier team with a 1-1 draw. This game marked the end of the second third of the season for Rovers and so the Hoops are running out of games if they want to overhaul Sligo and retain their title. Sligo led 1-0 at half time thanks to a fine long-range effort by former Hoop Mark Quigley and Rovers’ unbeaten home league record looked in jeopardy. However, the Hoops put in a fine second half performance and were unlucky to come away with just one point. It was Ronan Finn’s 49th minute strike that equalised for Shamrock Rovers. Finn’s fine effort flew by Gary Rogers into the Sligo goal. Stephen Kenny’s men dominated the second half but failed to get a winner. The Hoops continue to be top scorers in the league and will be looking to add to their goal tally when they travel to Drogheda in their next league game.
